Owners claim stores being obstructed By Erin Hatfield ehatfield@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Most of the store windows in the Bay Ridges Plaza are covered in paper, closed for business. But, some say the few businesses which remain in opera- tion are obstructed by the large de- velopment signage off Bayly Street. Pasquale Malandrino, the owner of Chique Hairstyling, appeared before Pickering City council at its Feb. 5 meeting asking to have the giant signs at the Bay Ridges Plaza addressed. “Isn’t Pickering against the pro- liferation of sign pollution that this represents?” Mr. Malandrino asked. “What is the challenge bringing these signs into compliance so that our plaza can return to looking as though it is open for business.” The redevelopment plan for the plaza at Bayly Street and St. Mar- tin’s Drive includes two high-rise condo towers and 126 townhouses, advertised by the signage. Many businesses have closed or moved, although there are a few still in operation. Among those remaining are hair salons, a dry cleaner, a restaurant and a veteri- nary hospital. “We feel we need your help on an issue of excessively large signage,” Mr. Malandrino said. Pickering working on signs: McLean Suspects sought in Pickering gas bar robbery Pickering incident accelerating policy creation By Crystal Crimi ccrimi@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The public school board is speed- ily working on a policy to address cyber bullying following an incident at a Pickering school. A YouTube video clip of a Pickering boy being teased led the Durham District School Board’s standing committee to have the draft policy for cyber bullying reviewed and ready for approval at the board’s next meeting on Feb. 19. The policy will include consequences, as well as the definition of cyber bullying, which in- cludes text messaging, said Pickering Trustee Chris Braney, who motioned for a policy to be in place. “When I heard of the incident from Trust- ee Braney I was disgusted and horrified,” said Pickering Trustee Sherry Croteau at the Feb. 5 standing committee meeting. Trustee Braney said he received a call a couple weeks ago from a parent whose son was a cyber bullying victim, after a group of kids brought a video camera to a Pickering school and taped themselves tripping and bullying him, then post- ed it on YouTube. The clip has been removed from the popular Internet site. Trustee Braney said the boy is about 10 years old and had a stroke a few years ago, which affected his left side and his ability to walk and talk. “I know the school is very concerned and tak- ing it very seriously,” said Andrea Pidwerbecki, the Durham District School Board’s communica- tions manager, in an interview. She said when the incident was brought to the school’s attention, the principal called the people involved and the video was removed. As well, there were consequences and apologies administered. The incident was filmed on school property, but posted on home computers, said Ms. Pidw- erbecki. The school is looking at bringing in police to talk to students about cyber bullying, said Ms. Pidwerbecki. She added it’s important to let students know cyber bullying is unacceptable and harmful and to help educate parents. On March 7, the board is having a presentation night featuring topics including internet safety and cyber bullying from 7 to 9 p.m. at Donald A Wilson Secondary School, open to parents. Trustee Braney said he hasn’t found any poli- cies addressing cyber bullying at other school boards and Durham’s can be something other boards can follow. A man who became known to Durham police as Malcolm Knight, age 31, has been revealed to in fact be 35-year- old Wayne Maloney, a man with an exten- sive crimi- nal back- ground. He is now w anted for a variety of offences in- cluding fraud-related crimes and obstructing justice, said Durham fraud Detective Constable Jeff Caplan. The suspect, who has been liv- ing at 15 Nordic Crt. in Whitby, first came to the attention of Durham cops late in 2006 when he was identified as a suspect in a number of fraudulent cred- it card purchases at stores in Ajax and Whitby. Police issued a warrant for the arrest of the man known to them as Malcolm Knight, Det. Const. Caplan said. On Dec. 5 an officer making a routine traffic stop in Whitby recognized the so-called Mr. Knight as a wanted man and ar- rested him. A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of false identification and credit cards, Det. Const. Ca- plan said. The man was released on bail the following day when his 18- year-old girlfriend identified him as Malcolm Knight and pledged to act as his surety. Durham fraud cops continued their investigation and re-arrest- ed the man in early January on several additional fraud charges. O nce again, he was released the next day, with his girlfriend act- ing as surety. It was in early February police realized Mr. Knight wasn’t Mr. Knight at all, Det. Const. Caplan said. “Monday of this week the RCMP contacted us and said he is not Malcolm Knight, he is Wayne Maloney,” he said. “Under the name Malcolm Knight he had no criminal re- cord and no involvement with police.” But Wayne Maloney has an ex- tensive criminal record and is a suspect in fraud investigations in Peel Region, Det. Const. Caplan said. Police allege the man es- sentially created himself a new identity, even obtaining an On- tario driver’s licence bearing the new name. “It’s a real licence in a false name,” Det. Const. Caplan said. The 18-year-old woman who testified on Mr. Maloney’s be- half at his bail hearings has been charged with perjury, obstruct- ing justice and breach of recog- nizance. Police are turning to the public for assistance in locating Mr. Maloney. Anyone with information is asked to call 905-579-1520, ex- tension 5702 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. So why do Stephen Harper and the Conservatives promote this reprehensible ad campaign against Liberal leader Stepha- ne Dion? It’s a reflection of their poor judgment and anyone with any morality and intelligence will see it for what it is. The Canadian way is to rise by personal merit. Is Mr. Harper so worried about his personal ability to create a majority government that he must stoop to American-style politics to create misgivings about the opposition? If so, is this a man who is to represent Canadians and their values in Parliament? Is this a leader? To me, he’s a dictator controlling everything: smear campaigns, suppression of the press and false promises. Is the party afraid to have him open his mouth in public to show his skill or lack of it? Why does the party machine vet his answers. We Canadians are too high class for this American-style crap! Or, are there cases where punishment shouldn’t be the aim? There are cases that are obvious. Some- body involved in a murder should face punishment. Somebody who is drunk and gets behind the wheel is another easy example. So is a pedophile. But, what about the situation out in Saskatoon where an 18-year-old girl abandoned her new-born baby on the steps of a home. According to police, the girl was alone in the city, had no family to turn to and in an incredibly difficult situation. She abandoned the baby on the steps of a house where she had heard a dog and figured the child, a girl, would be found fairly quickly. Thankfully, given the incredibly cold temperatures, in the -30 range, the people at the home found the child, and while cold, she suffered no long-term damage. Back to the question at hand -- would justice be served by punishing the birth mother by seeking punishment? There’s no doubt she had options -- go to a hos- pital or call an ambulance. It would seem counselling might be a better option for the mother than jail time. In a similar case in Toronto in Janu- ary of 2003, a homeless and mentally ill woman gave birth to a child and left it in a stairwell near city hall. Again, it was a bone-cracklingly cold night when the infant was abandoned. The woman, 41, was charged with failing to provide the necessities of life, found guilty and given a suspended sentence. The child was put up for adoption. What about the case in the U.S. with the NASA astronaut who drove 1,500 kilo- metres from Houston to Orlando to con- front a woman suspected of moving in on her love interest. Anyone who drives 14 hours, in adult diapers, in what appears to be an attempt to harm a potential rival, would have to be looked upon as being unhinged. The woman is no trailer-park mutant, but a brainiac (she has, among other degrees, a master of science degree in aeronautical engineering) and member of an incredibly elite club -- those who have gone into space (no pun intended). The woman had more than ample op- portunity to rethink her situation while driving 14 hours. But, would justice be served by incarcerating this woman for an extended period? It’s fair to say her astronaut’s job is over and she’ll probably end up in family court with her estranged husband over custody of their three chil- dren. It could be viewed that she has suf- fered and will continue to suffer without spending time in the old grey-bar hotel. Keith Gilligan’s column ap- pears every third Friday. E-mail kgilligan@durhamregion.com. When is justice served, Keith asks Shoddy treatment embarrassing Whether or not you like him, and no matter what your take on the issue of electing or not electing the Re- gional chairperson, Roger Anderson currently has the job and should be treated with respect. At this time of year, Mr. Anderson visits Durham’s municipal councils to give an address that sums up what occurred in the previous year and what lies ahead. He received two very differ- ent receptions when he visited the Ajax and Pickering councils recently. In Pickering Monday night, the Regional chairman was welcomed by Mayor Dave Ryan and other council members. When he began clearing his throat during his speech, some- one brought him a glass of water. As you can imagine, council members questioned him on largely Pickering issues and Mr. Anderson provided answers. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean noted he had received numerous calls and e-mails regarding the chairman’s treatment at Ajax council on Jan. 22, emphasizing that he is always welcome at Pickering council. This newspaper hasn’t been inundated, but we have re- ceived several letters from residents who attended the Ajax council meeting. With one exception, they were appalled at the shoddy treatment afforded Mr. Anderson by Ajax Mayor Steve Parish and councillors Colleen Jordan and Joanne Dies. “To berate the Regional chairman like he’s on the stand in a murder case was dishonourable,” wrote Ajax resident Don Carr. Another Ajacian, Larry Seens, personally apologized to Mr. Anderson and Tom Atkins, chairman of the board of the Rouge Valley Health System, for the treatment they received. A third person was treated ‘quite disrespectfully’, he added. It’s no secret Mayor Parish and Mr. Anderson aren’t the best of friends. But, Mayor Parish and the other councillors who participated in this reprehensible behaviour represent their citizens. No Ajax resident would discourage councillors from asking the chairperson tough questions if warranted. But, there is a way to ask a question and disagree without treating someone poorly, someone who is a guest, even though Mr. Anderson is an Ajax resident. Ajax citizens expect better from Mayor Parish and from the other councillors who embarrassed us. They could learn a les- son from the mayor and council to the west. DRT’s first year was hampered by a month-long strike by transit workers, he said. Despite successfully negotiating DRT’s first contract, the strike had lasting effects on ridership. Before the strike, rid- ership was up 11.7 per cent, but it fell back down. At the end of 2006, it rose 1.8 per cent above one year ago. By the second quarter of this year, Mr. Galinis said he hopes ridership will be back where it was and climbing. Moving into Year 2, the greatest chal- lenge will be to harmonize how DRT does business, he said. Merging the Region’s transit systems will take five years, he said. The 2007 budget process will also be a challenge, according to Mr. Galinis. DRT is in the process of putting out a request for proposals for expanding its Ajax facility, which is 100-per cent overcapacity, and making an application to the federal government to get money into Durham. “We did expand and we are looking for more support to expand it even further,” said Mr. Galinis. There are an additional 30 buses on order, which should arrive in March. “These buses will be clean-air diesels, accessible buses,” Mr. Galinis said. DRT also purchased eight used buses that have much better fuel economy and exhaust controls as well as being acces- sible. It introduced a management/union objectives process, holding preplanned meetings on a regular basis to go over what the issues are and solve them. To come in 2007, Mr. Galinis said DRT may introduce a grid system in Ajax, Pickering and Whitby. “People will have to transfer but it will give them more frequency and better reli- ability,” he said. Also in the works are trials of security cameras on the buses, standardizing main- tenance, a servicing study, and the intro- duction of an online trip planner. By Erin Hatfield ehatfield@durhamregion.com DURHAM — I vowed never to step foot on a bus again. But, one year after my first trip on a Durham Region Transit coach, which found me lost, cold and scared in Oshawa, I again boarded to see what had changed in a year. Round 2 of my journey to Ajax begins at 1:10 p.m. I’m ready to make the trip that last year took me more than two-and-a-half hours. My editor drops me off on Wentworth Street East. I am better prepared this time around, dressed in a raincoat and scarf, um- brella in hand. My bus arrives at 1:24 p.m. and I board, hand the driver my $2.50 (exact change), and ask him politely if he can tell me the best way to get to Ajax. “You’d be best to get off downtown at Bond and catch the GO bus west,” he says. This is the same advice I received one year earlier (although this driver is much more pleasant). But, I am not fooled by how easy it seems, as last time I missed the Bond Street stop, sending me astray. So, I sit near the front and keep my eyes pealed. I know my way around only slightly better this go-round, so when I find myself in downtown Oshawa I ask, “Is this where I get off?” “Nope. The next stop is Bond. Get off there and walk over to Centre (Street),” he replies. I get off at Bond and start walking. I walk about a block when I realize I am not too sure where Centre Street is. I ask a woman on the street if she knows if I am headed in the right direction. She replies she isn’t too sure, but suggests I ask the bus driver parked just up the street (what street? I’m not too sure). I step onto the bus and a smiling female driver greets me kindly. I ask her if she knows how I can get to Ajax. She suggests I check in the GO bus terminal and points to the building just across the street. Oops. Seems like so far the only thing screwing this trip up is my own lack of direc- tion. Inside the terminal, the woman behind the ticket counter tells me the bus will arrive in five minutes on Platform 3. It is now 2:25 p.m. On last year’s journey, at about this time, I somehow found myself standing in the rain at a shopping plaza at Taunton and Harmony roads. I wait patiently and board the GO bus at 2:32 p.m. Just to be sure, I attempt to ask the driver if I’m on the right bus, but he rudely grabs the transfer from my hand and waves me along. I guess that means I’m on the right bus. As pleasant as the trip has been thus far it quickly goes downhill. At the next stop, people load on the bus. It is obviously a well-used service. But, as a woman barely sets foot inside, he slams the door and I hear a young child yelp. My heart drops as the bus rolls forward, but he stops, opens the doors and on steps a second woman carry- ing a stroller and a child who’s less than two- years-old. Instead of offering an apology for the mistake he says, “Hurry up ma’am, I am already late.” We roll along Hwy. 2, making stops along the way, people getting on and off the bus. It definitely isn’t the most pleasant portion of my journey. The driver has a lead foot and I keep jerk- ing into the woman to my left and the young man to my right. It is just before 3 p.m. when I arrive back at the News Advertiser office in Ajax, in much better spirits than I recall being in after my last bus trip. The GO bus driver aside, it was a much more successful trip than in 2006. I don’t think it’s due to me. I am as direc- tionally challenged and as ignorant of public transit as ever, so it must be that DRT has improved. Durham Transit wants more people to catch its buses A smooth journey A smooth journey after year after year oneone Reporter finds trip better the second time around Durham wants to make local residents aware of all there is to see and do By Erin Hatfield ehatfield@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Good natured, good times. Durham Region’s Economic De- velopment and Tourism Depart- ment on Tuesday revealed the new slogan and a new logo. The strategy is the outcome of the Premier-ranked Tourist Des- tinations project, developed by the Ontario ministry of tourism to measure the market status of a destination. “My experience bringing family and friends to Durham Region in the 60s and 70s was good natured and good times so you have a great brand,” said David Lindsay, deputy minister of the Ontario ministry of tourism, who is a native of Ajax. The project was developed to determine opportunities and gaps in the Region’s current tourism industry and a blueprint to bring more people to Durham. “The ministry of tourism cre- ated the product to help business- es and local governments to work together to measure how much tourism and leisure activity they have in their area,” he said. “So they can figure out how they can work co-operatively together to create more tourism and more leisure activity in their area.” The information collected and assessed provided the starting point for a brand development exercise. Identified as major over- night attractions are Mosport, sports venues and business and education facilities. Day trips are prompted by gaming facilities, downtown Port Perry, zoos and festivals. “The Durham process has cre- ated a fantastic foundation for them to now start to build where they want to go, encouraging more tourists to come from the GTA, family and friends visiting from overseas, making sure they have a good quality experience and it takes advantage of all of the natu- ral assets of the Durham Region,” Mr. Lindsay said. The new logo, complete with shades of blue, green, orange and purple, was pleasing to Mr. Lind- say. “Tourism is a very competitive world and to have something a little different and a little bit novel gets your attention,” Mr. Lindsay said. “That one shows movement, it shows dynamism and people will take a second look at that one.” The new logo will be used on brochures, visitors guides, web- site and various other promotional materials. The Region is starting its new tourism strategy close to home according to Andrea Monaghan, the Region’s tourism manager, by making sure local residents are aware of what is going on. “A t this point we are going to stick a little closer to home,” Ms. Monaghan said. “We do know that is our market, and then look at potential oppor- tunities to partner in with Toronto tourism, Niagara tourism, we will let them do that far reach because they have more potential to draw people from that far reach.” Another priority for the industry is developing more packages, put- ting together overnight opportuni- ties to get people to stay longer and spend more in Durham. DURHAM — A North York woman was treated in hospital after spending a frigid night in her vehicle, which left the roadway after she got lost in rural Claring- ton early Sunday. The 47-year-old North York woman was treated for hypother- mia at hospital after being rescued by a passerby who spotted her car in the ditch near Hampton, said Durham police Sergeant Paul Mc- Curbin. “They figured she was there from about 3 (a.m.) to 6:40 (a.m.),” Sgt. McCurbin said. “She was dressed inappropri- ately. She was freezing.” The woman was in Durham for a birthday party Saturday evening. Upon leaving the event she dropped some people off in Pickering and headed onto Ta unton Road, intending to head west after a stop for gas, Sgt. Mc- Curbin said. But the woman took a wrong turn and went east; she drove as far as the hamlet of Hampton, near the intersection with Durham Road 57, before deciding to turn around. Matters went from bad to worse when her car slid into the ditch, Sgt. McCurbin said. The vehicle soon ran out of gas, leaving the lightly-dressed woman shivering in the dark for several hours until she was assisted by a person passing by. Te mperatures dipped well below -20 Celsius in the early morning hours, Sgt. McCurbin said. Police and paramedics respond- ed. The woman was treated at hospital in Bowmanville and re- leased. Wrong turn leads to frigid night in car By Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A group of frustrated emergency room physicians at Lakeridge Health Oshawa has hired a lawyer to help them get past “roadblocks” in negotiations with hospital administration over the best way to provide patient care. An emergency room phy- sician who spoke with This Week on condition of ano- nymity, said the group felt the step was necessary to ad- vance their cause. “We felt we were hitting roadblocks... some of these issues had no movement for four or five years,” the doctor said. “We hope now that things will be resolved.” While the doctor could not provide many specifics due to ongoing negotiations, con- cerns have included the avail- ability of specialists to treat patients in the emergency department and coverage of critically ill patients. The doctor said emergency physi- cians are sometimes called out of the emergency depart- ment to treat patients else- where in the hospital. “This is mostly about the internal workings of the hos- pital,” the doctor said. Michael Fraleigh, the To- ronto-based lawyer hired to advise the group of emergen- cy room physicians, said it is not uncommon for doctors to seek legal advice when it comes to negotiations with their administration. “In most cases, the hos- pital and the physicians are on the same page, they both want to provide excellent patient care,” he said. “But, the hospital has to deal with competing interests, like budgets and resources and that’s where there’s a gap.” Mr. Fraleigh said Lakeridge has already resolved some of the issues raised by the doctors and he expects the rest will be resolved in the next three months. “Our emergency depart- ment physicians have raised a number of issues and we are undertaking a process to work with them. It is not appropriate to make further comment at this time,” said a Lakeridge spokesperson in a statement Friday. “With re- spect to the operation of our emergency department, it is business as usual.” A lack of available specialists sounds all too familiar to Whitby resident Tony Mercieca, who has visited the Lakeridge Os- hawa emergency department several times in the last few weeks with his wife who is struggling with complications from diabetes. When the couple visited the emergency department on Jan. 17, Mr. Mercieca said it was almost an hour before his wife, who was so weak she could barely stand, was given a place to lie down. He was then told there were no specialists available to see her. “The doctor in the emer- gency room said my wife needed to be seen by a spe- cialist, but he said they didn’t have one there because they had cut back,” he said. durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 10 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, February 9, 2007 Dental Care for Adults, Kids and Great Big Babies. • A Full Range of Dental Treatments - Bring the whole family. • Saturday & Evening Appointments - To serve you better. • Flexible Payment Options - Helping you get the treatment you want. • A Relaxing Atmosphere - Virtual vision glasses, stereo headphones to help ensure you have a pleasant visit. The recent report also found that 94 per cent of residents in Durham’s long- term care facilities were vaccinated. However, vaccination rates for groups like caregivers and family members ca- pable of spreading influenza was 45 per cent. Each year there is an average of 72 deaths in Durham Region due to in- fluenza and pneumonia. A number of community flu vaccination clinics are held throughout the Region as part of the influenza vaccination program. In the 2005-06 season, the health depart- ment vaccinated 11,760 area residents at community clinics and distributed over 159,000 doses to other health profession- als and workplace clinics. Those entrants selected would fi le regular (three times a week) entries on their chosen subject By Lesley Bovie lbovie@durhamregion.com DURHAM — New regulations for travelling to the U. S. have created a mad rush at Whitby’s passport office. And while Passport Canada says people are panicking, merchants at the Whitby Mall Shopping Cen- tre couldn’t be happier with the extra traffic being generated by Durham’s only passport office. “It’s bringing a lot of people from all over,” says Joe Barekzai, the owner of London Shoe, just across the hall from the office. Some Saturday mornings, the lineups for a passport run out- side the mall’s main en- trance. “They take a number and come shop. It’s good for us,” says Mr. Barekzai. “If they’re travelling, I may even manage to sell some sandals this time of year.” Passport Canada is currently processing a record 21,000 applica- tions each day across the country. A year ago, a busy day might see 13,000 or 14,000 processed, says spokeswoman Francine Charbon- neau. That was before the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, a new American law eventually re- quiring all travellers to the United States to carry a passport. Although the first phase for air travel went into effect Jan. 23, the United States gave notice of the new law last November. Ms. Charbonneau thinks people didn’t flood passport offices back then because they were waiting and hoping the law would be re- negotiated. Surveys indicate 25 per cent of the people lining up now for a passport are doing so in prepara- tion for the law’s second phase, which will come into effect some time in 2008 and require pass- ports for land travel to the United States. “A lot of people are panicking who don’t need to be there,” adds Ms. Charbonneau. “They still have lots of time.” Instead of rushing to a passport office, the agency says those people should apply by mail rather than bog down the system for others trying to get a passport for booked flights to the United States. Not only did the regulations hit smack dab in the middle of peak travel season, but all those pass- ports issued in the huge surge after the events of 9/11 are now coming up for their five-year renewal. Some offices are reporting wait times of up to four and five hours, says Ms. Charbonneau. New front-line staff have been hired, overtime has been offered and print centres have been kept operational 24 hours to keep up with demand. Last month’s applications num- bered 457,886, up 51 per cent over January 2006. “We’re seeing the rush now, but we think it’s going to even out at the end of the year,” says Ms. Char- bonneau. Meanwhile, all the paranoia continues to be profitable for clever entrepreneurs like Zoran Ikonic, owner of Photo Plus Ltd. His 10-month-old business has found its niche, re-shooting re- jected passport photos in only two minutes. Passport Canada encourages people to plan ahead and expect delays. Applications in person are now taking 25 business days to process instead of the previous 10. Mailed-in applications have gone from being issued in 20 business days to now taking two months to process. Highlights of the renewed collective agreements in- clude a three-year term from Sept. 1, 2006 to Aug. 31, 2009, wage increases totalling 9.2 per cent, and cost savings through staff- ing adjustments related to calculating custodial square footage. “These agreements will continue to provide a posi- tive and stable educational environment for our staff and students over the next three years,” said Whitby Trustee Mary Ann Martin, chairwoman of the Durham Catholic District School Board. As she finishes up the final touch- es, Ms. Choo-Shee-Nam moves on to the next cupcake in line. This one gets the classic vanilla buttercream icing in the shape of rosettes. “It is a very popular design,” she says. Ms. Choo-Shee-Nam has been designing and decorating cup- cakes since she opened a quaint bake shop with her husband, Pat- rick, at the end of 2006. Located in a nondescript strip mall on Bayly Street in Ajax, Frostines Inc. also features specialities like hand- made truffles, fresh-baked pies, candied apples and custom-made cakes. “It has been hard work,” says Mr. Choo-Shee-Nam, who comes to the new business with experi- ence in managing food service outlets throughout Ontario. “But we thought it was time to open something of our own.” Despite the difficulties often faced by new business owners in their first year, the entrepreneur- ial couple is hopeful their success will come from their unique take on the classic cupcake. On offer in the sweet-smelling shop are 20 varieties of cupcakes -- such as German Chocolate, which comes covered with coco- nut-pecan caramel frosting and the Cupcake Surprise, a vanilla cupcake with a fruity jam centre and strawberry buttercream. “She creates everything herself,” Mr. Choo-Shee-Nam says proudly of his wife. “She’s the baker.” But when asked who does the baking, his wife is more modest. “We both do,” she says. The Choo-Shee-Nams are, in fact, doing everything themselves. They’ve designed their own logo - - using their two young children as inspiration -- and created their own pamphlets. They also plan, at least for now, to run the new shop all by them- selves. Mr. Choo-Shee-Nam admits finding a balance between family life and running a business open seven days a week can be trying. The entrepreneurial couple live in Newcastle -- “because it’s quiet and just such a nice place” -- but run their business out in Ajax where Mr. Choo-Shee-Nam’s parents reside. “Thank goodness for parents,” he says as his mother arrives at the shop to pick up his 20-month- old son Richard. “It helps so much to have a mom who you can turn to for help.” It is a helping hand that the Choo-Shee-Nams will be turning to more often in the coming days as they gear up for Valentine’s Day. With heart-shaped cookies that can carry custom messages and beautifully wrapped truffle treats, the shop can expect to draw in customers looking for a special gift. People tend to buy sweets for their loved ones on Valentine’s Day because it represents what’s coming from their hearts, Ms. Choo-Shee-Nam says. “They give someone a gift that’s sweet. It says ‘I love you’ and ‘I think you are special,’” she says. To find out more about what Frostines and other local business- es have on offer for Valentines Day, watch Durham Daily News (www. durhamregion.com) this week for our video series. Patrick and Alice Choo-Shee-Nam have opened ‘Frostines Inc.’ in Ajax recent- ly. The new business features flavoured cupcakes, pies, brownies, chocolate, candied apples and other delights. We spend a third of our lives in bed but many of us toss and turn, get hot and cold, wake up several times because we just aren’t comfortable. So what do we do? Well we go to MasterBedroom in Whitby. Thanks to owners Garry and Stephen MacMurray and their very helpful and knowledgeable staff, thou- sands of people all over Durham Region and beyond can thank them for a com- fortable, restful sleep. This is their 25th year in business and one thing hasn’t changed – They still specialize in mak- ing your bedroom a place where you find peace from a very hectic day. They can talk all about their wide selection of mat- tresses, bedroom suites, futons and bunk beds, as well as the revolutionary sleep systems from Tempur and Natura. They can explain to you the variety of spring coil sets from Serta and other manufac- turers, why beds feel a certain way, and the benefits as to why they will give you a good night’s sleep. “You really have to come to the store and try them out,” says Garry. “Come by yourself or as a couple. Lie on the mattress and see what’s right for you. That’s why we have so many systems to experience. We have some- thing for everyone. Tempur and Natura are foam and latex systems respectively that have become a popular alternative to the traditional coil mattress. Tempur, developed by NASA for use in space, is a revolutionary memory foam that moulds to the shape of your body eliminating pressure points that can cause restless sleep. They’re also designed to create a stable surface so when your partner moves you don’t feel a thing. Natura is a latex mattress that gives contouring support with a firmer feel. It creates a temperature-controlled microclimate for your body and significantly reduces toss- ing and turning. MasterBedroom also carries the superior lines of coil mat- tresses from the best manufacturers such as Serta and others. “There are still many people who prefer the traditional feel of a coil mattress,” says Garry. “That’s why we continue to offer a great selection.” There is also a selection of water bed mat- tresses for those that enjoy this retro but updated version of a very unique sleep system. From bedroom suites and bunk beds to the growing popularity of the latest futons that are great as an auxiliary sleep system, MasterBedroom has it all. Come in for a visit and rest your body on a mattress that’s perfect for you. Isn’t it time you had a good night’s sleep! A good night’s sleep from MasterBedroom Meet you in the kitchen. Or maybe to wait until the weather’s (a lot) warmer and take a four-hour cruise on Lake Ontario in a 30-foot sailboat. They are just two of about 30 items on offer in the silent auction being held in conjunction with the Catholic Family Services of Durham’s (CFSD) second annual Heart-to-Heart Ball on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Deer Creek Golf Club in Ajax. Mary Wells, executive director of CFSD, says the evening is a major fundraiser for the agency. With respect to the silent auc- tion, she said that “Mark Borg is the owner of a 1947 Chevrolet that he has lovingly restored. He’s of- fered his car -- with him as chauf- feur for the evening -- to drive the successful bidders to dinner for two at Brothers Restaurant in Whitby. Also, a Whitby Yacht Club member -- one of the agency’s board of directors -- has donated a four-hour cruise in Lake Ontario on her 30-foot CMC sailboat, ‘The Southern Cross.’ Other prizes include a pair of platinum seat tickets to see the To ronto Maple Leafs play at Air Canada Centre, as well as tickets for a Raptors Game at the ACC. Auction items also include ev- erything from office furniture to flowers and crystal, restaurant and golfing gift certificates and Harley- Davidson jackets. Whitby Mayor Pat Perkins has also donated a golf package to the auction. Tickets for the Heart to Heart Ball are $95 per person and music for dancing will be provided by Harvey Palmer and his orchestra as well as by a DJ. Catholic Family Services of Dur- ham, a counselling agency that has been serving Durham since 1983, offers professional counselling as well as educational programs de- signed to improve the interper- sonal skills of individuals and the quality of family and community life. Wells said that, “Our high- ly qualified counsellors see over 2,000 people a year, regardless of denomination. We serve about 500 abused women and children and offer about 14 group programs every week on every topic from parenting teenagers to anger man- agement, to self-esteem programs (Free to be Me) for kids 10 to 12, to our Healing Hearts program for sexually abused children. “We assist victims of family vi- olence to obtain protection and safety and to strengthen their lives. We also work collaboratively with other community organizations and parishes and develop preven- tive programs to reduce the inci- dence of family violence,” she said. The unique dinner theatre venue has three plays on the bill, and while they deal with intrigue, a musical group and a desperate playwright, re- spectively, the common ingredient is laughter. “The first one is a clever British farce by John Chapman and Michael Per- twee,” says Herongate co-owner and artistic director Ann Ward. “They are great English comedy writers. ‘Look No Hans’ has got all the great gags that made them famous.” The fun includes people falling out of windows and an exciting finale where a helicopter lands and some secret information is delivered. The cast includes husband-and-wife acting team Don Green and Rose Green and Karen Wiley, all of Pickering, Peter Hurley of Port Perry as a “ne’er do well secret agent,” and Elizabeth Holden of Oshawa. Hurley plays Peter Fisher, the manager of an unsuccessful auto firm in west Berlin who just happens to be an undercover agent for British security. “The three ladies are sort of the Bond girls looking fabulous and with a hidden agenda,” Ward says. She says the set and sound effects are highlights of the production. “It’s a great looking set with lots of special effects. There is a beautiful backdrop of Berlin done by our scenic artist, Lori Ufniak. Our lighting and sound technician Michael Leblanc from Oshawa has done a superb job of creating sound effects, including a helicopter,” Ward says. The James Bond spoof opens to- night, Feb. 9, and runs to March 24. Next up is a musical offering with a premise that’s funny and magical, ‘Forever Plaid’, which begins its run on March 30 and plays until May 12. The play features lush, four-part harmo- nies and live music. “I’m sure that all audiences will enjoy this musical story about four guys who’ve just got their first profes- sional gig when they’re killed in a car accident,” Ward says. “Their ghosts go to the show and they play the show anyway.” The stars of the show are Geoffrey Coulter, David Laing, Peter Bocking and Kyle Bentley, who as ‘The Plaids’ perform classic 1950s hits including ‘Catch a Falling Star’, ‘Three Coins in the Fountain’, ‘Love is a Many Splen- dored Thing’ and ‘Magic Moments’. Wa rd says “outlandish choreogra- phy” is featured in the work, directed by Yo rk University music theatre grad- uate Jacqueline Mitchell. The final show of the season, ‘The Butler Did It’, is a play within a play. “It’s a great American comedy about a play with all these people whose names are Butler,” says Ward. “The director tries to spur on the intrigue by murdering one of the actors. But, things go wrong and soon the audi- ence doesn’t know what’s real and what’s not.” The director, Anthony Lefcourt, des- perate for a hit, attempts to evoke the best performance he can out of his cast by withholding the play’s final scene from the actors. But, jealousies and ro- mantic complications make it hard for the cast to focus on the job at hand. ‘The Butler Did It’ stars Ali Ada- tia, Michael Bines, Jeannette Goguen, Margaret St. John-Francies, Paul Fran- cies and George Waugh and is directed by Michael Savage, an award-winning director from Whitby. The play’s run is May 18 to June 30. Wa rd says she is pleased to be able to offer top-notch, talent performers to audiences in the coming months. “All of the performers this season are well-known, first-class entertainers. I feel very proud to have them on stage here at Herongate sharing their talents for music and comedy with our audi- ences,” she says. For the uninitiated, Herongate com- bines gourmet home-cooked dinners with hilarity on stage. Located in the scenic Rouge Hill Heritage Conser- vation District, the 100-year-old barn theatre was originally a dairy farm, converted to a theatre, with seats from the historic Victory Burlesque Theatre in Toronto, in 1975. The ex- hibition of more than 20 original pieces of art opens on Feb. 12 and continues to April 2. Hightower, a PineRidge Arts Council (PRAC) member, has painted in oils for more than 40 years. Upon retiring in 2005 he took up watercolours and acrylics. In addition to holding the posi- tion of vice-president of Ajax Creative Arts (ACA), Hightower is also the con- vener of the club’s spring and fall art shows. Also a PRAC and ACA member, Bourke began painting in watercolours through a community evening class. “Don and I work in different styles so the show will provide variety to the viewers,” Bourke says. Although he has worked in acryl- ics, watercolours remains his medium of choice. Bourke’s works have been in several juried shows in Durham Region over the last two years. The OPG Information Centre is at 1675 Montgomery Park Rd. (at the foot of Brock Road) in Pickering and is open to the public Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Admission is free. Varsity boys’ squad second out of 48 teams at prestigious tourney AJAX — The Ajax High School Rams varsity boys’ hockey team fin- ished second out of 48 teams from across Ontario at the 25th annual Father Goetz Memorial Hockey Classic in Mississauga on Feb. 2 and 3. The Rams, exhausted after play- ing eight games in two days, came up short 3-1 to a skilled Robert Hall team from Brampton in the thrilling final at St. Michael’s College Arena. Earlier in the day, Ajax scored wins over Mother Teresa and J.F. Ross of Guelph in 3-on-3 mini-matches to earn a berth in the gold-medal final. In the semifinal game at a cold Upper Canada College rink, the Rams fought hard through inju- ries to secure a 3-1 win over the Lakeshore Catholic Gators from Welland. Earlier in the day, Ajax High blanked Dennis Morris from St. Catharines 3-0 in the quarter- final at Mississauga’s Iceland arena. The Rams got off to a great start on Friday with a 4-2 win over Holy Cross from St. Catharines and a 2- 1 victory over Fenelon Falls. They rounded out the day with a tough 5- 4 loss to Mother Teresa of London, but made it through to the playoff round finishing second in the pool. Ajax High was one of five Durham Region squads at the prestigious Goetz event. St. Mary, Uxbridge, Eastdale and Dunbarton also com- peted, but all failed to make it past the quarter-finals. The Rams now head into the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) playoffs hoping to earn a spot at Ontario Federa- tion of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championship, which is being hosted by Durham Region for the first time in its history. Brett Holmberg and Pat Mayhew added single markers. Game 2 in the series went Thursday in Courtice, with the result un- available at press time.
