During the Jan. 31 University of Ontario Institute of Technol- ogy (UOIT) Student Research Connections Day those inter- ested were introduced to vari- ous projects in which their pro- fessors are involved, as well as funding award opportunities and summer positions for which they could apply. “I think students may not re- ally understand all the things their professors are involved in,” said Deborah Van Oosten, grants officer. “This is to get them to see the other side of their professors.” During the research presen- tations, students heard about projects including wood com- positions, mobile manipulator systems, alternative fuels, para- sitic drug discovery, energy from plants and more. Mike Eklund said some of the things he’s working on include assisted living technology and autonomous vehicles. “Love to have some people working on those projects,” said Mr. Eklund. Its focus is on government oversight, co- operation and assistance in the industry that relies heavily on slave labour, espe- cially children. “A pproximately half of the world’s choc- olate is produced through child slave la- bour,” said Mr. Hinch. He added if students have any questions about projects they can come and see him. Presenting for the school of energy sys- tems and nuclear science, Ed Waller en- couraged students to apply for summer re- search positions even if they don’t obtain a funding award. One of his research projects includes coded aperture X-ray imaging. “This is my seeing through walls proj- ect,” said Mr. Waller. The project involves X-ray technology to reveal what’s on the other side of a wall. Ms. Van Oosten said students interest- ed in summer research opportunities can apply for funding awards and talk directly to faculty members. She said there are more than 20 awards available. Last year, about 50 students were in- volved in research projects. Andrew Lukomski, a second-year nucle- ar engineering student, was impressed by some of the projects presented during the event. “For cancer research, it’s great to see cures for cancer are trying to be solved right here at UOIT,” he said. He added one of the school’s faculty members also wants to put solar panels on highways to create power generation. “Research is so much more than just academic work,” said Mr. Lukomski. “Re- search here directly impacts society; re- search to solve problems.” Mr. Lukomski wants to get involved in research projects this summer, either for fluid mechanics or investigating neutrons through pipes. durhamregion.comP PAGE 2 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, February 4, 2007 The UPS Store now open in your neighbourhood! That’s the message a group of residents and the Strong Communities Coali- tion (SCC) plans to take to the provincial and federal governments. “It is actually people who are suffering from the lack of funding,” said Edna Klazek, chief executive officer of the United Way of Ajax, Pickering and Uxbridge. Residents and represen- tatives from various social service agencies heard from a panel of six experts on Jan. 29. The event was organized by the SCC, an alli- ance of the United Ways of Oakville, Peel, York, Dur- ham and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)/ 905 Healthcare Alli- ance. “Our vision is comprehensive, quality health care and social ser- vices be readily and locally accessible to all GTA resi- dents in a timely fashion,” Ms. Klazek said. “Equal op- portunity for all Ontarians.” The group is advocating for equitable and sustain- able funding policies and formulae for health and social services in the GTA communities. “We want to speak out on the need to improve access to health and social ser- vices for over three million residents in the GTA,” Ms. Klazek said. In October the annual operating funding gap for social services in the GTA was at $551 million and has since grown to $668 million. The hospital services gap stands at nearly $900 mil- lion. “That is over a billion dol- lars less per capita funding that we are getting than the rest of Ontario,” Ms. Klazek said. The Province’s funding for health and social ser- vices has not kept pace with the rapid growth seen in the 905 region, and with Durham Region continu- ing to grow at a rapid rate Ms. Klazek said the region is facing some significant problems. “Property taxes should not be paying for these services, that is part of our problem,” said Oshawa Re- gional Councillor April Cul- len. “It is regressive, it is pu- nitive and it is wrong.” She spoke about the im- pact of the funding gap on people with disabilities. “ODSP (Ontario Disabil- ity Support Program) is a pittance. You have people living on that who through no fault of their own cannot work,” Coun. Cullen said. “We need some recogni- tion at the provincial level that people need dignity and that can’t come on the backs of the taxpayers.” Dr. Walter DeKeseredy, a UOIT professor of criminology, justice and pol- icy studies, said adequate social services leads to crime preven- tion. “As we see growth and a lack of funding together with a lack of manufac- turing jobs we are going to face serious problems,” Dr. De- Keseredy said. “In absence of meaningful work and in absence of help we are just going to see more and more crime.” Eva Martin Blythe, the executive director of the YWCA Durham, gave spe- cific examples of the impact on that agency and similar agencies in Durham. “I submit one of the rea- sons for this is because the homeless don’t vote and children don’t vote,” Ms. Martin Blythe said. “We can all be the political entities to bring to bare that which needs to be brought to bare for those who don’t have a voice.” The coalition is putting together an action plan and starting to look at how it can get its message out, includ- ing a postcard campaign and having residents write to their elected officials at the provincial and federal governments. A series of town hall meet- ings on the funding gap are planed in the region. The next is at the Ajax Town Hall on Feb. 15. It’s launching a new program that tries to slow things down for small children and their primary caregivers, while recapturing the simple joys of parenting a young child through the use of time-tested nursery rhymes. Mary Delaney, education instruc- tor at PMV in Greenwood, developed the program with an eye to the needs of young children and their primary caregivers. “In the old days, primary caregiver was just almost always mom,” Ms. Delaney said. “And mom knew all the nursery rhymes and all the bounc- es that had been passed down from generation to generation in a world without television, day care and DVD players in the back of the family van.” The comfort of those rhymes and lullabies brought security then, and can bring security now in a world where some children can’t sleep un- less they have a movie playing by their bedside. Rhyme Time seeks to teach moms, dads or grandparents the old nursery rhymes while providing a quiet time with other babies and other adults. “When I was pregnant and when my babies were little, I remember feeling cut off from the adult world of conver- sation and intellectual challenge,” Ms. Delaney said. “I honestly felt that as the baby grew, my brain shrank.” Rhyme Time offers a special fea- ture – the wild, often bloody history of many of these seemingly gentle rhymes. It turns out ‘Mary, Mary quite con- trary’ isn’t about gardening after all and Humpty Dumpty wasn’t really an egg. The program runs Thursday morn- ings from 10 to 11 a.m. at the PMV, Feb. 8 to March 1. The cost is $40 for the session. Pickering museum offers nursery rhyme program DURHAM — During the month of January, we have offered you tips and tools on how to become organized. We’ve discussed home organization, family management and office and in- formation organizing, but our services do not end there! Each POC member offers a unique set of skills and experi- ences which allows us to offer you a wide range of services from residential, small office and home office organizing to decorating, home staging and work life balance coaching. Regardless of our specialty, each client is offered sound and proven solutions to help them increase the efficiency of their home and/or office and to improve their day to day productivity. The month of January has been exciting for us also, as we continued to receive your entries for the Let’s Get Organized contest, run in conjunction with Metroland Durham Region Media Group! There have been all sorts of rooms and spaces entered along with some great explanations as why each entry should be the winner. Here’s what a few of our entrants had to say: “Submitted by an otherwise high functioning, very efficient professional woman (all evidence to the contrary) who has lived with this ever growing disaster for years! I’m overwhelmed by the task and don’t know where to start... sigh....” “Having spent many years devoted to raising my family, scheduling every- thing from meals and doctor’s appoint- ments to vacations and bill paying, I now find that my organizational skills have deserted me.” “I desperately need professional help to effectively plan and organize this space so that I can be creative again.” “The closets and dressers are over- flowing and the clutter is taking over my bedroom and life. If I could just get organized, I could stop buying new clothes, save money, my mind and my marriage.” “Subject Room – Bedroom (really!) Abode of a gone, but not forgotten, uni- versity student who insists on coming home periodically. Closet? Inaccessible. Dresser? Barricaded. Visible floor space? Twenty per cent. Second bed? There is one? Stuffed animals? Apparently breeding.” “A ny time off we like to spend with our daughter keeping her busy and active. So cleaning and organizing our bed- room has always been a last priority.” “I hate that it’s (office) so disorganized and messy -- it’s stressful, embarrassing and unprofessional. I need to learn how to organize this mess better, so that I can be more productive and less stressed.” “Over the years I have tried to orga- nize myself to be more productive and efficient, but I never seem to achieve this. It would be so nice to come to work everyday and know where everything is. I would be much more productive and efficient, which might even free up some time to “enjoy” my space.” Congratulations to the winners of Let’s Get Organized -- Merle and Mary Ellen Cole and Kim Cleland! Each winner will receive a compli- mentary space makeover on Feb. 10 and 11 from POC Durham. We’d like to thank all of you who submitted an entry. It was difficult to select only two winners and we encourage you to try again next year. If you didn’t get an opportunity to submit your entry, we hope to see yours in 2007. I find it most troubling that the mayor most concerned about the agenda developers have for profit in our region is shut out of the planning process. I have followed the decisions of late to increase the amount of residential development at the expense of business and local infrastructure and am troubled at the seeming lack of foresight to plan for people living and working in the same region. As the environment and air quality become increasing concerns, we need to plan for the quality of life that includes less travel and air pollution. I will be watching with in- terest as regional council makes decisions that influence those of us who live here- will they result in more congestion as cars must be used for everything we do, or will they consider the importance of building where people can live, work, play and interact as a community? I think Steve Parish and Colleen Jordan are dead right to sug- gest that elected officials taking money from developers to pay for their election costs is a conflict of interest. Developers don’t live here and should not in any way be allowed to influence decisions being made for the future of this region. So, as we begin 2007, I wish our elected officials wisdom in the planning process for the benefit of us all and appreciate the time involved in making those decisions. B rad and Rebecca Skiffington weren’t asking for someone to hand them a house but that’s ex- actly what happened. Sometimes it only takes one person to make a difference. In the case of the Skiffingtons it took one couple to read their story in the paper, to hear their cries for help and forever change their world. The Skiffingtons had struggled for so long. First with Brad’s medical needs and his double lung transplant necessitated by cystic fibrosis and then with the lack of affordable and appropriate housing in Durham Region. They had pursued every avenue they could think of and just when hope had nearly run out the unbelievable hap- pened. An incredibly generous couple (who wish to remain anonymous) came to the Skiffington’s rescue. They pur- chased a home specifically to meet the Skiffington’s needs and the couple is liv- ing there for a very low rent. This couple also gave the Skiffingtons a dinning room table, a washer and dryer and are helping out in any way they can. Their story has a happy ending, but there are people all over Durham Region who struggle with affordable housing, health care and other social services. The Skiffington’s story highlights a greater issue. The funding for health and social services has not kept pace with the rapid growth in Durham Region and elsewhere in the 905 region. There is a huge gap between per capita health and social services funding in the 905 area compared to the rest of Ontario. If this funding gap isn’t addressed even more people in the Region will find them- selves in dire straits. It is a grave situation and one which the Strong Communities Coalition, an alliance of the United Ways of Oakville, Peel, York, Durham and the GTA/905 Healthcare Alliance, is mobiliz- ing to have addressed. They are launch- ing a campaign and holding town hall meetings to inform the public about the impact the funding gap is having in the hope people will put pressure on their elected provincial and federal officials. Even if you don’t think you need health care and social services now, chances are you could find yourself in such a situa- tion. Even if you don’t, your municipal taxes continue to rise as a result of the funding gap. You are affected. Not every story can end with a godsend as is the case with the Skiffingtons. It is time we, as a community, made taking care of each other a priority. Erin Hatfield’s column ap- pears every third Sunday. E-mail ehatfield@durhamregion.com. Erin Hatfield staff writer EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com Keep smoke alarms alive and working Ontario’s Fire Marshal’s office has worked hard over the years to raise awareness about fire safety measures, particularly the necessity of having working smoke alarms in residences. All that effort has paved the way to make sure alarms are gen- erally installed where they should be. A working alarm must be placed on each level of a residence and just outside all sleeping areas. The problem now is ensuring smoke alarms are able to do the job at all times of the day or night. Too often, the alarm is present but has been disabled. Frustrated homeowners take the battery out after the alarm is triggered by burning toast or the heat and smoke caused by cooking. After a number of these so-called “nuisance” alarms, residents often leave the devices permanently disabled. And that can be a fatal mistake. That’s why the Make it Stop! program, an education cam- paign run by the Ontario Fire Marshal, is so vital to province- wide safety. Statistics reveal that, between 1995 to 2004, fire- fighters found a smoke alarm in 79 per cent of the home fires they attended. What’s upsetting is that less than half of those alarms were found to be working. There are ways to cut down on nuisance alarms. One key is to keep burners and ovens clean. It’s also advised that alarms should be located away from kitchens and away from bath- rooms where shower steam can trigger an alarm. Sometimes, homeowners simply forget to check their alarm periodically to make sure the batteries are still working. Fire experts usually recommend you check them monthly and change your alarm batteries during the biannual time-change period. In addition to the obvious safety concerns posed by disabled alarms, there are penalties for those who don’t follow the law. Landlords face fines of up to $50,000 for not making sure their buildings are up to code. Tenants who remove batteries or tam- per with the alarm could be on the hook for a $235 ticket. While such penalties are meant to act as a deterrent they pale beside an entirely preventable tragedy. Smoke alarms save lives so make sure yours are armed and ready to work at all times. Amazing end to Skiffington story Ballet Creole dancers drum and perform for Lester B. Pearson Public School By Crystal Crimi ccrimi@durhamregion.com AJAX — As drums boomed, so did 14-year-old Rochelle John- son’s heart. Just one face in a sea of quiet and mesmerized students at Lester B. Pearson Public School on Feb. 1, Rochelle was deep in thought as Ballet Creole dancers and drummers helped bring in Black History Month. “It was really humbling,” said Rochelle, a Grade 8 student at the school. “It helped me connect with the dancing and music... I could feel the drums through my heart.” As Ballet Creole danced to the African beats pounded through the goat-skin drums, Rochelle “z oned” and reflected on the ac- complishments of black people. “People might see black peo- ple in school and think they’re about rap music and gangs but seeing events like this shows the culture and what being black is really about,” said Rochelle. Neketia Perez, a Ballet Creole dancer from Trinidad and To- bago, said the dances and drum- ming performed were part of an African celebration of thanks. A drummer also sung a folk song from Trinidad and Tobago about a bad boy who went to jail, she said. Grade 8 student Caroline Din- nall said the performance really touched her. “It just reminded me even of the lives my parents had,” said Caroline. “The beat of the drum reminded me of every- where - Africa, Jamaica, and the contributions black people have made to Can- ada and the U.S.” “It was a breathtaking experi- ence and I’ll never forget,” added Rochelle. During a question session with the students, Ms. Perez said the Ballet Creole company was created about 16 years ago to in- crease African dance in the area. “A t the time in Toronto, you really didn’t see a lot of black, African, contemporary dance on the professional stage,” said Ms. Perez. The members of the group who performed at Lester B. Pearson are from South Afri- ca, Cuba, Canada, and Trinidad and Tobago. “Do you learn from elders or do you go to special schools?” asked a student. “Both,” replied Ms. Perez. Students also received a his- tory lesson about the drums used during the performance and their African and Caribbean origins. Following the dancing and drumming, student Nadia Per- shad said the performance re- minded her of her family’s Hindu celebrations. “I think that they show we’re not that different,” said Nadia. She said it’s important to educate students about the past and black history. “I think that Black History Month is a time to celebrate what happened in the past and now that we’re equal,” said Nadia. Gary Lew, vice-principal of Lester B. Pearson Public School, said it’s important to celebrate cultural diversity and the dance and drum performance was a good way to welcome Black History Month, as well as raise awareness about the arts. An information display and class activities are also occurring in recognition of Black History Month. For ‘Blue Chip’ thinking - turn to the leaders ... But with the passing of time, and the division of the region, the bestowed acres ended up in Oshawa. Historical records show that in 1803, 10 years after slavery was offi cially abolished in Canada, Solicitor General Robert Isaac Gray gave his slave, Dorinda, her freedom. Financial provisions were also made for her, and for all her children, because of her many years of faithful service. To Dorinda, Mr. Gray gave 1200 pounds. Back then, one pound was the equivalent of fi ve dollars. The money was to be invested, to allow Dorinda and her children to live off the interest for the rest of her life. In addition, her two sons, Simon and John, were each willed 200 acres of land in Whitby. Simon received Lot No. 11, First Concession. Whitby archivist Brian Winter explains that is the area now close to downtown Oshawa, between Simcoe St. and the Oshawa Creek, west of John St. As Mr. Winter, explains, in those days there were no roads; a concession was all the land, not just a road. In 1803, the land known as First Concession would have been the block of land running from Hwy. 2, south to Bloor St. The 200 acres given to John was Lot 17, Second Concession. Second Concession is the area between Hwy. 2 north to Rossland Rd., from Thornton Rd. west to the Whitby border. Mr. Winter further explains that in that period, the area was known as Whitby Township. In 1857, the Township was divided. Lots 1 to 17 became Oshawa, and Lots 18 to 35 became Whitby, hence the reason why anyone going by the history books and trying to pinpoint the ‘Whitby’ lots given to Dorinda’s sons will fi nd that they’re actually located in Oshawa. Today Lot 11 First Concession and Lot 17 Second Concession are occupied by an assortment of residences and commercial buildings. Second Concession is the smaller area of the two. It includes the entrance to Mount Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, located on Hwy. 2, between Thornton and Garrard streets. For the record, we don’t know if Simon and John actually came to this area. Once slavery was abolished in the United States, many of the Niagara Region black families left Canada and returned home to the milder winters. — By Beverly Browne durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 8 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, February 4, 2007 State Farm® • Canadian Home Office: Aurora, Ontario • statefarm.ca™ We all want to make our world a better place for our children. When the News Advertiser first told the tale of Brad and Rebecca Skiffington the couple was in dire straits. They had nowhere to live and no hope in sight. But when a couple read about the story they did the unbelievable — they bought the Skiffingtons a home. “It is really hard to find the words to express what this means,” Ms. Skiffington said. “Liter- ally, they have saved Brad’s life.” Mr. Skiffington, 32, was born with cystic fi- brosis, a deteriorating lung disease, and due to a bevy of medical requirements he has specific housing needs. Without a healthy, mould-and- mildew-free home, large enough to accommo- date his air purifier, Mr. Skiffington’s doctors told him he would die. Ms. Skiffington attends school full time, work- ing towards a nursing degree, and because of his condition Brad was unable to work. The couple had struggled to find affordable and ap- propriate housing since moving to Ontario from Newfoundland five years ago. They tried every avenue they could think of. They wrote letters to politicians, tried to get assistance from Durham Regional housing, non-profit groups, the Province and even Oprah Winfrey. It was then, with no help in sight, that the Skiffingtons told their story to the News Ad- vertiser and their prayers were answered when a generous couple saw the story. The couple wishes to remain anonymous be- cause they say they didn’t do it for the recogni- tion but because they thought someone should help the Skiffingtons and knew they could. “I felt like we have been really blessed,” the donor said. “We have been there and done that, where we have had to get out of financial holes.” It seemed, the donor said, that every govern- ment program was designed to keep the Skiff- ingtons down. “They just wanted so desperately to get out from under. It really struck me that it seemed to be the harder they worked the further behind in the hole it would put them,” the donor said. The donors contacted the News Advertiser and expressed an interest in helping the couple but the Skiffingtons were reluctant to get their hopes up upon hearing the news. “We didn’t know who they were,” Ms. Skiff- ington said. “We were afraid to believe anything good could happen.” Even when a real estate agent called them to see the house it didn’t seem real. The donors purchased the Whitby home, which suits all of Brad’s medical needs, and the Skiffingtons live there and pay low rent. A few people caught wind of what the donors were doing and one of their neighbours got the moving company to move the Skiffingtons. The donors helped the Skiffingtons move, gave them a dining room table, a washer and dryer and are helping out in many other ways. All the donors wanted in return was for Ms. Skiffington to finish school and Mr. Skiffington to stay healthy. “They are just amazing people,” Mr. Skiffing- ton said. “They are wonderful. I can’t believe what they have done.” They moved into the home on Jan. 25 and the couple says it has changed their life. “The day we moved in it was like a huge weight had been lifted off our shoulders,” she said. “Just waking up in the morning and know- ing I don’t have to send 100 e-mails or call 100 people.” Now, with health and happiness on their side, both couples agree the greatest thing that arose out of the situation is the friendship they formed. Great gift Great gift ideas for guysideas for guys Story by News Canada Do you remember those old children’s toys that with a few magical twists and turns morphed a robot into an all terrain vehicle? Did you ever think how great it would be to do the same with your house after the kids were done rearranging the furniture, or even with your hair after a long day has knocked the life out of it? Your friends at Suave believe the same principle can be applied to transforming super Mom into super hot Mamma and the kitchen table into a cosy bistro for a romantic night at home. Yes, you read that correctly - a romantic night at home. Set the stage - make sure the two of you will be alone. If you have children, arrange for babysitting at someone else’s home and plan your romantic dinner on an evening of a week that you are sure your spouse won’t have other time commitments already scheduled. Set the style - start your romantic evening with a sexy twist on your everyday hair. Wash you hair with a lovely fragrant shampoo like Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut Shampoo for a scent that will bring back a rush of summer memories and put you in the mood for romance. Set the table - if the kitchen table is too cluttered, pull out a smaller folding card table that provides a more intimate setting. Toss a purple (the colour of passion) cloth over the table to disguise its true purpose. Scatter rose petals over the table and serve dinner by candlelight. Set the theme - turn down the lights and light the candles. Play some soft, romantic music, or some songs that have special meaning for the two of you. You never know, with the right music, your romantic dinner might end with some slow dancing in your dining room. The most romantic surprise my husband ever planned for me was on Feb 14, 2001. You see, I was not expecting the amazing flowers or lovely jewellery that I usually received for Valentine’s Day because we just didn’t have the money. My husband had been laid off from his job the June before and money was very tight. The day just felt like any other day but I knew that in my heart that Valentine’s Day was suppose to be a magical day. My husband started to head up for bed early and he gave me a kiss and said to me that things would get better soon. About a hour later, he called me to come upstairs, I went to go brush my teeth and to my surprise the bathroom was all lit up with candles, my favorite CD was playing and he drew a big bath for me. He never thought that it was much, but to me it was because it came from his heart. Sincerely, K.C. CongratulationsCongratulations to ourto our Contest Winner!Contest Winner! HERE IS HER STORY..... In a matter of seconds, our microwave can be relied upon to thaw, melt, reheat, boil, toast, and cook exactly what we need. Ah, but does it bake? Most of us would likely say no, but specialists in this fi eld are now saying an enthusiastic, yes! “Our baking specialists have formulated a way for you to microwave a beautiful home-baked cake in just ten minutes,” says Linda Fox, spokesperson for Duncan Hines. “Just follow the package instructions and you can count on a perfect, fresh-baked cake for family, or unexpected guests, every time. In fact, it’s so easy to do, teenagers and college students are now making warm and delicious snack cake after school.” Here’s a handy guideline: Prepare your choice of any DH mix according to package instructions. You’ll need eggs, oil, and water, as well as the frosting, and utensils. Chocolate mixes or dark cakes turn out particularly well. Microwave cooking doesn’t ‘brown’ when baking, so a light vanilla or white cake may remain a little too light. If you do prefer light cakes, just plan a pretty coat of frosting for contrast. To get the best results, use a round, silicon bundt pan designed for more even baking. If you don’t have one, choose any round, straight-sided, microwave- safe dish. Remember, the shape of the dish will be the shape of your fi nished cake. To help the cake slip out more easily, take a scoop of frosting and line the inside of the bundt pan. This technique will also give your cake a lovely glaze. Use it sparingly: approximately 1/3 can. If it’s too thick in the pan, it will be very messy when you turn out the cake. Place in microwave. Bake on high heat for ten minutes. Microwave ovens vary so test for doneness after about eight minutes, continuing to bake further only if necessary. Cool and frost. The total preparation, baking, and cleanup time should clock-in at about twenty minutes. For more information, plus a helpful recipe resource, visit our website at www.duncanhines.ca. The good news is there’s extra incentive this year, as two local teams will qualify for the OFSAA provincial championships, which are being held at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre March 21-24. As host, LOSSA will send both finalists to the tournament. “I think there are five teams that I don’t think it would be an upset if any of the five won, then another two teams that would be a darkhorse,” says Josh French, coach of Oshawa’s Eastdale Eagles and a LOSSA convener. “I think St. Mary, ourselves, Dunbar- ton, Uxbridge and Ajax, there’s not much to choose between the five of us, and McLaughlin and Dwyer aren’t far away.” The Eagles and St. Mary Monarchs of Pickering would be considered slight fa- vourites, considering neither team lost a game during the LOSSA regular season. The two played to a 2-2 tie just before Christmas and finished with identical re- cords of 7-0-3, which put Eastdale on top of the East Division and St. Mary atop the West. The Uxbridge Tigers won the Central Division with a 7-2-1 record and have the experience of having played at OFSAA last year, when they dropped a heartbreaking quarterfinal in the dying seconds. The three division winners, plus Pick- ering’s Dunbarton Spartans (7-2-1), will earn a first round bye, while the next best eight will battle it out in best-of-three se- ries beginning Monday. “It’s all fairly evenly matched,” says St. Mary coach Mike Dion. “Even the first round itself, there should be a couple good teams getting knocked off there and once you get to the quarters, there’ll definitely be a few good teams get- ting knocked off there as well.” The Eagles head into the playoffs not only as a hot team, but with a very hot player in 16-year-old centre Zach Palm- er, who had nine points in the final two games, wins of 5-3 over McLaughlin and 5-2 over Pickering. Defenceman Mark Yule and goalie Blake Bodashefsky are also key players for East- dale. “A t the beginning of the year we had some inconsistency and I wasn’t sure we were buying into the whole team concept,” French says of his Eagles, who are current- ly ranked eighth in the GTA by The Toronto Star. “In early December we had guys start believing in our system and guys were get- ting a better idea of what roles we expected them to play.” Dion, whose Monarchs are ranked right behind Eastdale in ninth, are led by goalie Eric Nottbeck and are deep at all posi- tions. “We’re very disciplined defensively, ex- tremely strong on the defensive end, very good goaltending,” Dion says. “Up front, we’re pretty much in a situa- tion where we can roll three lines and get pretty good production out of all three.” The Tigers may not boast the talent of some of the other top teams, but they have a proven track record and are well- coached by Don Simmonds and James McNab. “They’re a team that talent-wise they may not match up with the other four (favourites), but the sum is better than the parts,” says French. “They really work together as a team, their coach does a real nice job in instilling that team concept. They’re tough to get off their game, really disciplined.” Dunbarton and the Ajax Rams (5-1-4) are the other teams with a good chance of reaching the final, while Oshawa’s McLaughlin Trojans (7-3-0) and Dwyer Saints (5-4-1) are lurking close behind. “This league has proven it’s a tough haul to win the championship,” says Dion. “It’s a long four or five weeks to get through the whole thing and hopefully be on the top at the end. But it’s a nice little carrot to have at the end to know OFSAA’s going to be at home this year.” THE NEWS ADVERTISER, February 4, 2007 PAGE 15 A/Pdurhamregion.com SPORTS sportsdurhamregion.com AJ Groen/ News Advertiser photo In flight PICKERING — Dunbarton High School’s Nic Brown is defended by Pickering High School’s Syd- ney Odom in second half action in the St. Mary Classic senior boys’ basketball tournament at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School. Councillors were told the expansion and reno- vation work won’t be completed until Septem- ber of 2010. Tom Atkins, chairman of the board of direc- tors of the Rouge Valley Health System, told coun- cillors “construction will start in September and be complete by March of 2010. We hope to open the facility in September of 2010.” Ajax Mayor Steve Parish questioned the comple- tion date, saying, “my im- pression is the program would be in the ground much earlier than Sep- tember and be completed much earlier than three years.” Bob Oldman, another member of the hospital’s board, said there are five phases to the redevelop- ment. The emergency room will be completed in about two years time and all the work by the fall of 2010. The final portion includes the expanded laboratory. “If we can do it fast- er, we will,” Mr. Oldman said. Wo rk began recently on the construction of a road running from Harwood Avenue to Centennial Drive, said Natalie Bube- la, the hospital’s vice- president of programs and support services. “It’s been a long time coming,” she stated, add- ing a ground-breaking ceremony will be held later this year. The project includes an expanded emergency room, diagnostic imaging department, ambulatory care unit, complex con- tinuing care unit, labora- tory and mental health services. The work covers more than 140,000 square feet, including 75,000 sq. ft. of new space. A larger ER is sorely needed, as the current one was designed for 20,000 visits a year, but receives 46,000. The ex- panded ER will be built for 60,000 visits. Mr. Atkins noted the project now carries an $80-million price tag, up from the earlier $60 mil- lion cost. “We’re very excited by what is now an $80-mil- lion expansion,” he stat- ed. With redevelopment costs rising, so has the amount that must come from the community, he said. It’s now $15.8 million, up from the previous total of $14.8 million. “We’re looking for our share to be climbing to $17 million,” he said. He also dismissed a charge the board was working to close the hos- pital. “You’ve heard the ru- mour we’re going to close the hospital. I will say it out loud, because some saying that are in this room. It’s absolutely not true. We’re working to grow the hospital,” Mr. Atkins said. Wa rd 2 local Council- lor Joe Dickson raised the possibility of the Town donating money to the hospital for equipment, suggesting a three-year commitment of $250,000 annually. “My only point is ev- eryone knows the situa- tion,” Coun. Dickson said. “Everyone knows about the additional revenue coming into Ajax.” He said his suggestion would cost $2 per person in one year or $1 a person over two years. Mayor Parish noted any money for the hospi- tal coming from the Town would mean an increase in taxes. “Everyone in the room heard from the people about taxes,” he said, add- ing Coun. Dickson ran on a platform of no tax in- creases. “Everybody must be extremely realistic when anyone throws out those statements,” Mayor Par- ish said. THRIFTY MECHANIC SHOP Inc.
