Miss Teen International 2006, Jade recently left her Maryland home to share her story of grief and how the Rainbows program helped her, with Bolton C. Falby and Altona Forest public schools. “I guess you can say I have a lot to smile about, but there’s a side of me that doesn’t show,” said Jade, wearing a bluish green dress accompanied by her pageant sash. She won the Miss Teen International beauty pageant as a 15 year old and made the Rainbows program her platform. Jade dis- covered Rainbows when, at age 13, her best friend and two of her grandparents died. Feeling she needed to talk to someone about her grief, she went to her school’s guidance counsellor. “The best advice she could give me was to move on,” said Jade, standing before the group of stu- dents sitting on Bolton C. Falby’s gymnasium floor. She added the teacher didn’t mean any harm, but didn’t know what else to say. “During grief I was angry,” said Jade, and added she could not be- lieve someone would say these words to her. Aside from dancing, all she wanted to do was sleep so she wouldn’t have to think about her dead friend and grandparents. The feeling of loss can also be prevalent in children dealing with divorce, immigration, and Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo Cassandra Rightmyer reaches to touch the crown of Miss Teen International Jade Kenny during a visit to Bolton C. Pickering student faces forgery charges By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Durham police are scrambling to recover hundreds of counterfeit identification docu- ments -- including Canadian Armed Forces ID cards that could allow ac- cess to military bases or armouries -- after charging a Pickering college student with forgery. Durham fraud investigators have been working to track down the cards using a data base of re- cipients retrieved from computers seized from the 19-year-old man’s residence last week, said Detective Constable Katherine Denton. Po- lice are appealing to people to turn in the cards. While it appears the documents, including Ontario driver’s licences and LCBO cards, have been dis- tributed primarily to allow young people to purchase alcohol and get into bars, the existence of phoney Department of National Defence IDs creates a special concern, Det. Const. Denton said. “We don’t know if they’ve fallen into the wrong hands or not,” she said. “They could be used to gain ac- cess to military bases or armouries, depending on security,” she said. “These cards are good enough to pass.” Police believe the Pickering resident, a business student at the University of Ontario Institute of Te chnology in Oshawa, had been creating and selling false identifica- tion documents since last January, using a computer he leased from the school and was able to operate off-campus. It’s believed approximately 500 cards sold for $50 apiece both at the school in Oshawa and at Royal Military College in Kingston and the University of Toronto. She tried to talk to her parents, but they had their own grief to deal with so she turned to the internet and found Rainbows. Rainbows, a non-profit international or- ganization, provides peer support programs for those grieving, including from divorce or death. It’s offered at various locations, such as schools, and is free to participants. “I think picking this as my platform really helped me,” said Jade. Even after she gives up her Miss Teen International title in the summer, she’s still going to represent Rainbows in Maryland. She’s also trying to get a Rainbows site in her hometown. At Bolton C. Falby, about 45 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 are in the Rainbows program, said Laura Dunn, an educational assistant there and Rainbows co-ordinator and facilitator. Ms. Dunn added she’s trying to get more intermediate students involved. Carol Bertram, Rainbows national direc- tor, said 92 per cent of Durham schools are trained Rainbows sites. “Durham Region is one of the most in- tensely Rainbowized schools in Ontario,” said Ms. Bertram. Jade’s visit to Bolton C. Falby was the first she’s had to Canada. “I came all the way here to talk to your school and I have another school,” said Jade to the Bolton C. Falby kids during a ques- tion period. Students also asked her about her school work, travels and Miss Teen International crown. “Do you want to touch it?” asked Jade, and leaned forward so students could touch the heavy crown, pinned to her head. Jade became involved in Miss Teen Inter- national because her mom was a “pageant girl” too, she said, and added it’s a lot of fun. While travelling for Rainbows and Miss Te en International, she brings her home- work on the plane. “I’m very busy,” said Jade. She also wrote a bill of grieving rights, which includes having the right to know the details and circumstances of death; see that person put to rest; grieve in their own unique way; be angry about the death, and be involved in decisions pertaining to buri- al. Rainbows program helps students deal with grief ✦ Rainbows from page 1 Durham wants $150 million investment By Erin Hatfield ehatfield@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Developing its transit system is critical to Durham and to that end the Region is making a bid for a federal investment. Funding from senior lev- els of government is vital to transit, according to Ted Galinis, general manager of Durham Region Transit (DRT). “Durham, historically, has received nothing from the Province or the feds,” Mr. Galinis said. “This is the time for them to have a look at Durham and finally get some money into Dur- ham.” The Region this year is getting provincial gas tax dollars, around $7 mil- lion, just under $3 million from the 2007 bus replace- ment program and federal gas tax dollars, which Mr. Galinis said likely won’t be less than $1.5 million. It can make applications for additional funding and currently the Region is preparing a submission to the federal government under the Canadian Stra- tegic Infrastructure Fund- ing Program (CSIF) for money to accelerate the development of its transit system. It is looking for a $150-million investment to be split between the federal government, the Province and the Region. According to Mr. Gali- nis, the application isn’t yet finished but will be submitted in the later part of February. “We are pressing on; we just haven’t finalized it yet,” he said. “We are on a very short time line, work- ing with a consultant and will conclude on Feb. 15 and then package it into an application.” The CSIF is directed to projects of major federal and regional significance in areas that are vital to sustaining economic growth and enhancing Ca- nadians’ quality of life. It emphasizes partnerships with any combination of municipal, provincial and territorial governments, as well as the private sector. Existing CSIF money for the 2006 budget has all been allocated in Ontario but, ac- cording to Chris Williams, com- munications ad- visor for Infra- structure Can- ada, it isn’t too late for Durham to get funding. There is $6.6 billion in re- newed funds not yet allocated and no com- mitment is being made until a renewed funds structure is in place. “It is too early to say where the funds will go,” Mr. Williams said. “But, most certainly Durham could be considered.” He said an an- nouncement on where the money is going can be expected in the near future. In its first year of op- eration, Durham has moved for- ward on public transit with the introduction of the One Fare Anywhere program, more frequent service along key corri- dors like Hwy. 2 and Sim- coe Street, and new routes in areas like northeast Os- hawa and Courtice. The hope is an im- proved transit system will attract new riders needed to reach a level of service comparable to other 905 municipalities. The Re- gion says this requires a commitment of federal dollars and matching pro- vincial funds. In his address to the Os- hawa Chamber of Com- merce on Jan. 18, Regional Chairman Roger Ander- son touched on the im- portance of transit. “Transit will be vital to support and connect these two new urban cores in Durham,” Mr. Anderson said, “Fortunately, transit is a vital component of the Growth Plan, so hopefully the Province will make the necessary investments.” He told the chamber it’s crucial Durham convinces both senior governments that infrastructure invest- ment in Durham is a win- w in-win situation. “They need to under- stand that our economic success will also be their success,” Mr. Anderson said. “We must work together to convince the Province that increasing their in- vestment in Durham, es- pecially in transit and our highway network, will pay big dividends for Ontario.” Carriers of The Week If you did not receive your News Advertiser/flyers OR you are interested in a paper route call Circulation at (905) 683-5117. Six of 26 murder charges are expected to take a year of court time, even though the evidence is apparently overwhelming including the Pickton ownership of the burial grounds. Taxpayers’ millions spent so far and another year of for- mality and very expensive court time will have no effect on the obvious outcome as our system grinds away. Governments’ “make legal work” bureaucracy format is a grossly inefficient method of doing business -- including justice. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, February 2, 2007 durhamregion.com Thanks for the memories, Pickering, Ajax I n the past when I’d meet new people and tell them I’m a reporter in Pick- ering and Ajax they’d give me a look I could only imagine said, ‘wow, that sounds exciting’ with an air of sarcasm. I might have thought that three years and two months ago too, but now I know better. My time here covering local issues and people provided me with plenty of com- pelling stories to tell. As I think back on all the people I’ve met and the stories I’ve written, I can’t help but be a little sad that it’s over. I’ll still be around in my new position with Durham Sustain Ability, but it won’t be the same. There won’t be any features about the interesting people who call this area home – such as war veteran Jan De Vries. There’ll be no more late nights at council listening to dozens of passion- ate residents fighting against developing the Duffins Rouge Agricultural Preserve or the redevelopment of the Bay Ridges Plaza. Someone else will get to follow the fight of the people of north Pickering against an airport. People such as the Barclays (there are far too many to name them all), who made my job so much easier by being accessible and sharing something so personal. In the end it’s really the people and their stories that make a beat interesting, and during my time here there was never a shortage of noteworthy locals who were willing to let me tell their stories. People such as human rights pioneer Bromley Armstrong, Mike Fogelman (the recipi- ent of Canada’s first live stranger organ donation), and most recently the incred- ibly strong Angela St-Denis. Members of numerous community or- ganizations, City of Pickering staff, elect- ed representatives and others have also been incredibly helpful and kind. My time here included stories about the lack of diversity in elected repre- sentatives, accessibility for those with disabilities, and the struggles of being an urban farmer. I felt these were important issues to cover – and luckily my editors agreed – and I was able to find the people through which to tell them. There are stories I wish I was staying to see through – the outcome of Seaton, the new councillors finding their place, the long overdue expansion of the Ajax and Pickering hospital. Now I will follow them in a different way. The stories, the people and the fun – such as seeing Durham from 1,000 feet up from a hang glider – will be missed. This is Danielle Milley’s last column. Danielle says au revoir to A/P John Sabean sets a good example Pickering is richer thanks to his volunteering John Sabean is our kind of guy- and it’s nice to see others feel the same way. The Pickering resident recently received the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship at a Queen’s Park ceremony, one of only a dozen or so recipients chosen out of many dozens of nominees. Mr. Sabean is a long-time volunteer who continues to add to his impressive resume all the time. But, as his wife, Carol Sabean, recently told us, “I don’t think he gives himself as much credit as he deserves.” He’s not one to blow his own horn, or take on a task for the recognition. Mr. Sabean in- stead is committed to making Pickering and Durham Region a better place because it’s the right thing to do and he has a passion for it. There are no better motives. He began his life-long volunteer work when most of us would be far too busy - when he was doing graduate work. The scope of what he’s done is truly impressive, includ- ing teaching English-as-a-second-language to refugees and working at the national and provincial level of the Baptist church. Before long, he turned his sights closer to home, helping to found the Pickering Township Historical Society (he’s the president), joining Heritage Pickering, and becom- ing involved in many other areas. His commitment to pre- serving Pickering’s history, which is probably much richer than most of us realize, stands out in several respects. “Everything that is thrown out or lost is a personal hurt to me,” he says. Most recently, he became chairman of the Durham West Arts Centre’s board of directors, committed to bringing an arts facility to west Durham. He could have hung up his volunteer hat long ago and no one would have blinked an eye given all he’s accomplished. And let’s be frank, volunteering can be very time-consuming and exhausting. But, for those most excellent citizens like Mr. Sabean, who are conscious that there’s much to be done to improve their community, and that it begins with one per- son making a commitment, retirement isn’t really an option - and we’re the grateful beneficiaries. So, apart from congratulating Mr. Sabean on his good citizenship medal, think of him the next time you’re thinking of joining a local board or committee, or helping out with a sports team. Let his example inspire us to make a contribu- tion to our city and region. School councils have set meeting dates to discuss school bell changes, said Paul Pulla, acting director of education at the Jan. 29, Durham Catholic District School Board meeting. The dates are in February and will inform and discuss the proposals with school com- munity councils, as well as encourage them to get com- munity input. Time shifts proposed by Durham Student Transpor- tation Services could be anywhere from five to 30 minutes and would help in- tegrate and streamline bus routes between the public and Catholic school boards. “C ost savings are one of the areas consortia are en- couraged to consider,” said Mr. Pulla. He said savings are about $40,000 for every bus re- duced. For the bell chang- es, a more defined savings amount will be available after school community council recommendations are received, said Mr. Pulla. The transportation consor- tium has the final decision on the proposed time shifts. “I hope we’re going to re- ceive all this in a written report before the action is taken,” said Oshawa Trustee Joe Corey, who added he wants the transportation costs per pupil before and after the consortium. “They’ll have to convince me there’s a great big savings to stay in the consortium,” added Trustee Corey. Trustee Corey admitted he didn’t do his homework before approving the con- sortium and would have voted against it, had he known it has final decision for the bell times. “It is the intent and ex- pectation that the consor- tium will come back to both boards before any decision is made,” said Mr. Pulla. “Just as long as we have the costs, that’s all I’m look- ing at,” said Trustee Corey. School council recom- mendations will also be in- cluded in the information the board receives, said Mr. Pulla. Whitby Trustee Mary Ann Martin, Catholic board chairwoman, asked what happens if the transpor- tation consortium brings back a decision both school boards disagree with. Mr. Pulla said that’s unlikely, but if it did, they would have to take another look at the decision mechanism within the contract. The board accepted Mr. Pulla’s verbal report and asked him to make a writ- ten copy as well. According to a report previously presented to the Catholic board, staff from Durham Student Transpor- tation Services are review- ing submissions from su- perintendents, principals, and school councils, then is to report their findings to the board before making a decision. The library’s ePlus School-Public Library part- nership program is receiving $25,000 from the ministry of culture’s Library Strategic Develop- ment Fund (LSDF). Cathy Grant, the library’s director of public ser- vices, was pleased when she found out another of the library’s projects would be receiving money from the fund. “We’re very excited,” she said. “It’s something that we feel is really important.” The library had previously received money from the LSDF for its digital archives and the first instalment of the Plus program. The ePLUS (PLUS stands for Public Libraries United with Schools) program has a specific focus. “It’s providing funding for us to go into Grade 7, 8 and 9 English classes and show them the virtual collection the library has,” Ms. Grant said. She said a lot of students use the library for pleasure reading or to get research books, but when it comes to databases, the popular search approach tends to be Google. Ms. Grant said library staff are going into the schools to show students the databases available through the library and how to use them. They hope to be in the classrooms by the spring, first requiring time to meet with teachers to prepare the classroom-specific material. They hope to prepare information to help a class with one spe- cific unit it is working on, for example volcanoes, in order to prove the value of the online resources so students will go to it for future projects. Ms. Grant said without the funding the program wouldn’t be as broad. “We wouldn’t be able to reach as many students as we’d like.” The LSDF supports the ongoing development of a strong public library sector that supports free and equitable access to information. Nine libraries across the province are receiving money from the fund this year. Schneider Electric Canada on Jan. 25 announced a donation of $250,000 in equipment to the Ontario Institute of Technology’s engineering and applied science faculty laboratories. The company, a leader in electrical distribution, industrial control and automation prod- ucts, systems, and services, is providing various student train- ing labs with automation tech- nology including programmable logic controllers, human ma- chine interfaces, software, mo- tion control servo drives, sen- sors, relays, timers, switches, and safety products. The equipment will also play a role in the university’s Cap- stone Design projects. “Ensuring our students have access to state-of-the-art equip- ment is key to our success and thanks to Schneider Electric Canada’s significant contribu- tion, more UOIT students than ever will be able to collaborate with their professors in the class- room and the lab,” said UOIT president Ronald Bordessa. “Schneider Electric recognizes the high calibre of students and future graduates of the Univer- sity of Ontario Institute of Tech- nology,” said Gary Abrams, presi- dent, Schneider Electric Canada. “In addition to this donation, we are also seeking to expand our partnership by offering co- op and intern opportunities to UOIT students and graduates.” The initiative bridges the gap between what students learn in the classroom and industry ap- plication, Mr. Abrams added. Pickering native Ryan Eickmeier witnessed the devastation in the Gulf Coast community firsthand while there on a recent trip to help its remaining residents rebuild. The New England College student was part of group of volunteers that headed down Jan. 4 for a week to lend a hand as part of Katrina Rebuilding Lives. It was an experience the 19 year old won’t soon forget. As he walked and toured around the area he couldn’t help think- ing what the southern community used to look like. One of the streets right on the water used to be lined with large plantation-type homes, but today it has an eerie ghost- town feel to it with large trees lin- ing either side of the street that is now the site of damaged and destroyed homes. “All you want to do is picture it before the hurricane. It is so hard to imagine it was a place where people lived and children played on the street,” he said. “I’m stand- ing there in a foundation and I’m thinking, ‘I’m in someone’s kitch- en’.” The area was hit by 28-foot-high surges that made their way well in- land during the August 2005 storm. Mr. Eickmeier was at a house a mile inland and he noticed there were piles of seashells, “the tiny little ones you see on the beach... like they should be there.” The surge lifted everything – sidewalks, dirt and grave stones. The tight-knit community had a population of 7,500 prior to Ka- trina and after the storm just 1,500 remain, most in FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) trailers. The rest have moved away and started over, although some plan to come back. Piles of personal items dot the ends of driveways in the pictures Mr. Eickmeier brought back with him. There are dishes and family photos. It seems odd that 18 months after the Category 3 storm hit, the items wouldn’t have been cleaned up yet, but he said people have left them there on purpose, “as a sign of hope to show they want to rebuild.” The town’s business section is a collection of trailers. “Pretty much everything is in a trailer, the police station, the li- brary, it’s like a shanty town,” he said. It was one of his professors that told Mr. Eickmeier about the trip; it was an opportunity he said he couldn’t pass up. “You see what has happened on the news, but you don’t see the human part of it,” he said. While the majority of attention was paid to New Orleans because of the devastation following the breaking of the levees, the force of Katrina was stronger along the Gulf Coast. When the eye of the storm hit Pass Christian it was a Category 3 storm, but it had lost some steam when it hit New Orleans. “You can tell people didn’t get as much attention or as much aid as other people and New Orleans,” Mr. Eickmeier said. “You want to go down there and do everything you can, but what really prevents them is money.” There were 14 volunteers in his group. They stayed in an Ameri- Corps camp made up of tents and the most basic of accommodations. They were able to meet volunteers from different places – some of whom had been down there since the beginning. Mr. Eickmeier and his crew were able to accomplish a lot, despite the short work days (it got dark around 4:30 p.m. and there were no street lights or other lights so they could continue working). They finished a house, doing the painting and putting up the sid- ing. “We really made a difference down there, every little bit helped,” he said. “You want to do your best because you know this is the final product and this is going to be someone’s house...We really just wanted to give them the best that we could.” He was able to meet the fam- ily who would soon be calling the house home. In addition to losing their home and belongings to Ka- trina, the two are both undergoing cancer treatment. “They were really grateful,” he said. “When they saw us there, they came up and were hugging us.” Mr. Eickmeier will be giving back to others shortly. He is heading to Peru for a week this summer to help rebuild a school and do other volunteer work. Be it a drug-free community or free educa- tion for all, student dreams were shared during a special school assembly to honour Martin Luther King Jr. and his birthday on Jan. 15. “I have a dream that war will stop and every- one can come together with no hatred,” said Sara Abdulrahman, a student who participated in the ‘I have a dream’ project. Through it, Grade 8 students studied Dr. King, listened to his famous speech and wrote and presented their own. A few were chosen for reading dur- ing the special assembly, including Zohaib Kamal’s, whose dream is to get drugs off the street. “I felt that was very important because I want to influence kids not to use drugs when they’re older,” said Zohaib, whose family has been af- fected by drugs. “I know it happens to a lot of people and I want to influence other kids not to do it.” Zohaib said he liked the project because ev- eryone could express their feelings and dreams while helping to inspire others. He also enjoyed learning more about Dr. King. “I think he was a great man, he did a lot... he was a real hero,” said Zohaib. “If he was still here, he’d probably be really proud of every- one.” Standing in the gymnasium in front of the student body, Lara Meil recited her dream of free education. “Why should we pay for an education?” asked Lara. “Education is a right to everyone. How can poor people or even middle-class people af- ford to send their children to the school of their dreams if these dream schools are $30,000 to $40,000 a year.” Lara said let’s ban together and stop the gov- ernment from putting a price tag on education because she has a dream for every child to get the schooling they want. The assembly also included a pledge of non- violence. “I would like us all to stand and do some- thing together,” said teacher Marie Thomas to the students sitting on the gym floor before her. “I will say the words for you and perhaps when you stand, you can repeat the words for me.” The pledge included: re- jecting forms of hatred, bigotry and prejudice; embracing the values of unconditional, universal love, truth- fulness, courage, and compassion that empow- ered Dr. King, and dedicating life to creating the community of Dr. King’s dreams so everyone can live together as sister and brother. Students could choose to sign the oath afterwards and have it added to a bulletin board featuring pic- tures and the speech by Dr. King. Ms. Thomas said she got the idea to do something with the pledge when she went to the Martin Luther King Centre in Atlanta two years ago. “(Students) have those beliefs, they know what’s right, it’s just to remind themselves,” said Ms. Thomas, who is also a co-ordinator for Students Together Against Racism. She initiated the ‘I have a dream’ project to help students with the speech portion of their class, which occurs around the same time as Dr. King’s birthday. They used his speech to learn techniques, such as repetition. “Many of them talked about stereotypes, child labour,” said Ms. Thomas. “They were very passionate about their dreams.” The project brought some students out of their shell, she said. “When it becomes meaningful to them, that’s when it works,” she added. THE RESPECT I DESERVE “The personal contact I have with the staff is warm and genuine. I always feel like they’re glad to see me.” The people you encounter will ensure your dignity in every aspect of daily life. Instead of buying roses or chocolates for their sweetheart, Valentine’s Day shoppers are encour- aged to give them a relax- ing treat by wrapping up a gift certificate from a spa taking part in the Heart of Gold Challenge. Par ticipating spas have pledged to donate a per- centage of proceeds from all gift certificates sold for Valentine’s Day, to YWCA Durham’s Y’s Wish (Women in Safe Housing) Shelter. “Spas are a natural fit, when you’re thinking of a fundraising partner for the shelter,” said Judy Mead, fund development co-ordinator for Y’s WISH. “Spas are in business to provide services to women who value self-care. Their customers appreciate their support of women who are struggling with their own physical and mental well- being.” So far, OpusGlow Con- cept Spa on Mary Street in Whitby and Skin and Body Rejuvenation Clinic on Ontario Street in Os- hawa have agreed to par- ticipate. “I think this is a great way to help women in our community,” said Ashley Plowman of Skin and Body Rejuvenation. Ms. Mead said there is still lots of time for other spas across Durham to get involved. “It’s a win-win for ev- erybody,” she pointed out. “It’s an easy way to do- nate to a wonderful and really important charity. It will bring new business to the spas. It’s an easy and thoughtful Valentine’s gift for the buyers and a valued treat for the recipi- ent. I know when I receive a spa package as a gift, my whole family reaps the benefits for days.” Y’s Wish shelter opened its doors in May 2003, of- fering a safe and support- ive refuge for women and children across Durham Region. Since opening, it has operated to capacity pro- viding shelter to more than 400 women and their children and responding to more than 4,000 crisis phone calls. As well, the Y’s Wish transitional/housing and outreach workers have assisted more than 600 women in establishing new lives, free from abuse, for themselves and their families. Eligible veterans can receive a one-time tax-free payment of $24,000 in recognition of their service to Canada. This amount is in addition to any disability pension benefits to which they may also be entitled. Those eligible for payment under the program are members or former members of the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Air Force or the Canadian Forces, who volunteered and participated as test subjects at Suffield, Alberta, from 1941 to the early 1970s, or the Chemical Warfare Laboratories, Ottawa, 1941 to 1945. The Government has now extended this program to include Canadian military veterans who served as test subjects at Allied Forces’test establishments such as the Chemical Defence Experimental Station at Porton, Wiltshire, United Kingdom during the Second World War. Where eligible veterans are deceased, the executor of an estate that is still open – or the primary beneficiary of the veteran’s will where the estate is fully dispersed – may submit an application. In those cases where an eligible veteran died without a valid will, the last unremunerated adult person(s) ordinarily residing with the veteran at the time of the veteran’s death may also apply for the one-time, non-taxable payment of $24,000. Healthcare givers, housekeepers and other individuals paid to provide services to these veterans are not eligible to receive this ex gratia payment. For more information please contact the Chemical Warfare Agent Te sting Recognition Program Office by phone at 1-800-883-6094, by e-mail at: recognition-2006@forces.gc.ca. or in writing to Chemical Warfare Agent Testing Recognition Program Office, National Defence Headquarters, 101 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa ON, K1A0K2. It should be noted that many Canadian service personnel attended courses in the United Kingdom at the “Army School of Chemical Wa rfare” at Winterbourne Gunner during the Second World War. While this establishment is close to the Chemical Defence Experimental Station, Porton, it is a separate unit and service at this school, which often included exposure to chemical warfare agents, does not equate to being a chemical warfare agent test subject. Applications from, or on behalf of, Canadian chemical warfare agent test subjects who served at Allied Forces’test establishments must be received by February 28, 2007. Ve terans Affairs Canada (VAC) provides for the award of disability pension and other health-related services and benefits for service-related disability or death. If you believe you suffer from a disability related to your military service, including a disability related to chemical warfare agent testing – or if you are the surviving spouse/partner of a deceased veteran who you believe suffered from a disability related to his/her military service – please call VAC toll-free at 1-866-522-2122 (English) or 1-866-522-2022 (French). By Danielle Milley dmilley@durhamregion.com PICKERING — John Sabean is one good citizen – and he has the medal to prove it. A longtime community volunteer, Mr. Sabean was presented with the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship at a ceremony at Queen’s Park Jan. 25. Established in 1973, the award is given to On- tario residents who through exceptional long- term efforts have made outstanding contributions to the well being of their communities. With a volunteer career spanning 30 years, Mr. Sabean certainly meets the criteria. His volunteer resume includes such varied tasks as teaching English-as- a-Second (ESL) to refugees, helping in rural Nicaragua, and raising awareness about local history. His volunteer work began in 1976 when he was doing graduate work. “I was sort of looking for something to do on a volunteer basis that would pay back what I owed society,” Mr. Sabean said. First came teaching ESL to refugees, which mushroomed to working at the national and pro- vincial level of the Baptist church public works committee. He then worked with the Baptist Peace Fel- lowship (travelling in the U.S. to different confer- ences), which had him working on different peace and human rights issues, including heading to conflict-zone Nicaragua as part of a Canadian delegation with Witness for Peace. After that his volunteer work had him less involved with people and more involved with boards, he said. His volunteer involvement also became more community based. Mr. Sabean was one of the founders of the Pickering Township Historical Society and cur- rently holds the position of president. This is the 10th anniversary of the group. He later joined Heritage Pickering. A historian by profession, Mr. Sabean said he al- ways studies the local history of the places where he lives. Pickering is unique because in some parts of it, such as Whitevale, the physical history still exists. He is hoping what’s left of Pickering’s history can be preserved. “That hurts me, everything that is thrown out or lost is a personal hurt to me,” he said. “I want to see it preserved.” His interest in the arts prompted him to be- come chairman of the Durham West Arts Centre (DWAC). Queens University professor Brian Os- borne nominated Mr. Sabean for the honour. His package included letters of support from former DWAC execu- tive director Angie Littlefield and Ajax- Pickering MP Mark Holland. The former Pickering councillor worked with Mr. Sa- bean as part of the waterfront co-ordinating com- mittee. “He showed a tremendous passion for heritage and worked tirelessly as a volunteer and wasn’t looking for any recognition,” Mr. Holland said. “He’s exceptionally deserving. He’s someone who does a tremendous amount for the city and the region.” Mr. Sabean’s wife, two sons and his daughter were all with him when he received the honour. Carol Sabean was incredibly proud of her hus- band. “I think I was more pleased than he was with the award,” she said. “I don’t think he gives him- self as much credit as he deserves.” Mr. Sabean was impressed with the ceremony and the other recipients. “It’s especially humbling to know there are 200 or something nominees and they only chose 12 or 13 recipients,” he said. Hearth Place taking the chill off cancer for a decade now By Lesley Bovie lbovie@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Walk inside Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre and you can feel it right away. This is where warmth and com- passion resides for families and in- dividuals living with the cold reality of a cancer diagnosis. At any given time, there are 750 people seeking support through the centre, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this week. It was the vision of Carolyn Alex- ander that Durham Region have its own refuge dedicated to addressing the emotional, mental and spiritual needs of people dealing with the life-threatening illness. She died of breast cancer before the centre opened in 1997. Founders stayed true to her hopes that Hearth Place be about more than just breast cancer, said Carole Keys, a founding board member, cancer survivor and fa- cilitator at the centre. “We intentionally wanted to stay away from feminine themes,” she explained. “We wanted it to be for different genders and different gen- erations.” Services range from a variety of support groups to alternative thera- pies such as Reiki, massage therapy and yoga. Executive director Andrea Shaw remembered when services were delivered from the main floor of what once was a modest bungalow at 86 Colborne St. E. in Oshawa. Volunteers finished the basement to provide more programming space, and in 1995, the Durham Region Home Builders’ Association replaced the bungalow completely with a brand new renovation and expansion. Up until now, Hearth Place has been run by three part- time staff -- Ms. Shaw, Sonja Shep- herd and Marg Braithwaite -- and without any public funding. On Monday, Oshawa MPP Jerry Ouellette delivered a $213,600 grant from the Ontario Trillium Founda- tion. It will provide the full-time hires of fundraising co-ordinator Jenny Black and administrative as- sistant Cheryl Hayes for the next two years. “There was nothing part-time about it,” Ms. Shaw said, of staff’s duties over the last decade. “Each of us have a passion for this kind of work so it’s our volunteer work as well.” With the number of cancer diag- noses expected to climb 61 per cent over the next 10 years, Hearth Place will have its work cut out for it in the future, she told those who gath- ered to celebrate the anniversary. Hearth Place is located at 86 Col- borne St. W. in Oshawa. For more information, contact 905-579-4833 or visit www.hearthplace.org. Take a tour By Danielle Milley dmilley@durhamregion.com PICKERING — While life for Maurice Brenner has been busy since his election loss in November, he said he’s enjoying not being on “the treadmill” any more. He’s been keeping busy, but his evenings are free now that he is no longer a regional councillor, “which is really good. I don’t feel like I’m on a treadmill any more.” In his 21 years as a municipal representa- tive he had to balance his city responsibili- ties with his professional and personal ones, and then regional was later thrown into the mix. At the time of his defeat, Mr. Brenner had served seven consecutive terms as a coun- cillor – he was one of Pickering’s longest- serving elected representatives. Although he loved it, if he could go back and do it over, he would make some changes. “I have no regrets as it relates to those 21 years. There are some things I would have done differently, one of them is the balance of family, social and work,” he said. There were times when he would have to miss something one of his children was doing in the evening because of meetings or community functions. “You can’t get back the years you lost,” he said. Through the years, Mr. Brenner was kept busy with many issues, including his work as the Durham children’s advocate as a mem- ber of the Regional health and social ser- vices committee, helping bring the vision for Pickering’s waterfront to life, and more recently his work in starting Communities Against Violence Everywhere (CAVE) and Sustainable Pickering. One issue he is proud to have been a part of is bringing St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School to the Amberlea neighbour- hood. He said when he first got elected to council there were no schools in the new community, but there was a plan for a large park. There was fight- ing about whether to build a school or a park, as well as fight- ing about whether it would be a Catholic or public school. “It was really sad because it pitted neigh- bour against neighbour,” Mr. Brenner said. The City took a vote to decide whether to go ahead with a park or to release the land for a school. He said the community deci- sion was binding and that’s how St. Margue- rite Bourgeoys CS came to Amberlea. Although that situation worked out, Mr. Brenner doesn’t think Pickering would go that route again. “I’m not sure any city or community body would have the confidence in community engagement to do that,” he said. He is also proud to have been a part of the waterfront project. “The waterfront project was not just a passion, but something exciting to see it go from a vision to what it is today,” Mr. Brenner said. He compares the waterfront to Sustain- able Pickering, which he plans to be a part of in some capacity. “I have no intention of turning my back on any of the things I feel passionately about,” he said. While Mr. Brenner has no regrets, there are a few things he would have done differently, including doing a better job of balancing the fine line between the role of councillor and the input of staff. “It’s important to make decisions that are different than staff because it’s what your constituents want,” he said. “It’s not always right because staff says it’s right, something’s not always right because council says its right and it’s not always right because the community says it’s right. You have to find a balance.” Specifically he would have made different planning decisions when it came to Kings- ton Road. “It’s sad because Kingston Road doesn’t have the identity it should and I have to take some responsibility for that,” he said. Losing in November was difficult for Mr. Brenner, but the outcome wasn’t a surprise. “It’s difficult to do a campaign when deal- ing with perception and you’re dealing with something you’re not really in a position to defend yourself on,” he said, referring to the fraud charges laid in May that he faces in court in June. “I still won’t talk about the charges,” he said. Mr. Brenner isn’t sure if he’ll venture back into political life. “It’s too early to even speculate,” he said. “But, what do they say, ‘never say never’.” He is busy with his work on human rights and equity, doing speaking engagements in To ronto and Durham. “There’s lots of ways to be able to serve the public – whether you volunteer, whether you hold public office or whether you do what you enjoy doing,” he said. When driving through Amberlea or along Kingston Road, Mr. Brenner is reminded of the many positive projects with which he was involved. “I see this plaza and I know how much time went into the community to reach a compromise,” he said. And, when the duo steps on the ice against 15 other dance pairs in Brampton, their free dance routine is wall-to-wall exuberance set to ‘fitness workout’ music, including ‘Who Let the Dogs Out’, ‘Everybody Dance Now’ and ‘Everyone’s a Win- ner’. “It’s fun and upbeat. It’s re- ally fast,” explains Salvagna. “You don’t get a chance to catch your breath.” Their compulsory skate routine, however, takes on a more sedate tone, with the ‘Rocker Foxtrot’ and the ‘American Waltz’ used as the musical backdrop. “They’re more serious pieces of music,” notes Servant, a Grade 10 student at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Ajax. Servant and Salvagna are in their first full season in the pre-novice dance division and, thus far, the step up from the juvenile level has been seamless. They qualified for nationals at the Eastern Challenge in New Brunswick in December, where they put together a fifth-place finish to earn their way to nationals. At the Eastern sectionals in Ottawa in early November, Servant and Salvagna placed sec- ond to qualify for the Eastern Challenge. This season represents their second con- secutive year of competing at junior nationals. Last year, while at the juvenile dance level, the pair finished in the middle of the pack, eighth out of 16 dance teams. At the 2007 junior nationals, Servant and Salvagna are confident that they could finish near the top in their first year in the pre-novice bracket. “I think, realistically, our goal is to be top five. That would be nice,” says Salvagna, who attends St. Anthony Daniel Catholic School in Pickering. “We’re really excited. It should be a good experience and fun to do.” “I really hope we do well and have one of our best performances,” adds Servant. They’ve been together as a dance duo for the past three seasons, starting to compete as a team in the fall of 2004. They initially skated at separate clubs, Sal- vagna at the Pickering Skating Club and Ser- vant at the Ajax Skating Club. They now compete under the Bowmanville Skating Club banner under coach Caroline McKennie and also train at the Scarboro Skat- ing Club, under the guidance of Carol and Jon Lane of Ajax. Ironically, Ser- vant and Salvagna didn’t form a skat- ing partnership through regular skating channels. But, rather, the duo met through their social network. “I’m friends with (Joanna’s) older sister, Ce- leste. We went on a school trip and our parents started talking,” explains Servant. “A t that time I was looking for a partner and my mom found out that Joanna also skated.” The dance partnership flourished almost immediately after it was formed. “We get along well, for sure. We have fun,” says Servant. The duo hopes to graduate to the senior dance level and compete for a Canadian title in the near future. “We hope to get to senior nationals in our career,” says Servant. The junior nationals got under way Wednes- day and continue through until Saturday.
