The Ward 1 City Councillor was commenting on the annual pesti- cide update from staff presented at the Jan. 22 executive committee meeting. “I’m quite disappointed we are still at this stage of the debate,” she said. “As far as pesticides, they do cause cancer. They cause a number of social and economic problems.” To date, the City of Pickering has opted not to adopt a bylaw banning the cosmetic use of pesti- cide, as municipalities such as To- ronto, Vancouver and Newmarket have done. It continues to manage municipal property using both tra- ditional pesticides, but also other methods such as proper mowing and aeration, irrigation and water- ing techniques, regular dethatch- ing and the use of organic fertil- izers. In order to decrease residential usage, the City uses education pro- grams. Coun. O’Connell would like to see Pickering take the next step and bring forward a bylaw banning pesticides. She presented a large stack of studies she has found that show the harmful effects of pesti- cides. She said there are alterna- tives. Pesticides spark debate at Pickering council Province pleased with Durham council decision By Erin Hatfield ehatfield@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Regional Council has recognized the overwhelming opposition to a controversial Green- belt Plan attachment. The attachment, identifying five parcels of land contained in the Greenbelt the Region wanted tagged future growth areas, has been dropped for now. “I want to make it crystal clear that some of the boundaries are flawed,” said John Gray, Oshawa Mayor and planning committee chairman. “I think the opportunity to correct some of those boundaries will occur in 2014.” Council voted to receive a re- port on the request for Greenbelt changes as information and take no further action. Regional Council requested the planning committee report. Delegations routinely poured out to council and committee meetings since talk of affixing the attachment to the Region’s Official Plan began. Twelve delegations spoke to council on Jan. 24 before a final decision. Planning committee had recom- mended the attachment be provid- ed as information with the Region’s Official Plan. “A ny tinkering with the Green- belt, no matter how minimal, is a step in the wrong direction,” said Paul-Andre Larose from Oshawa. “A s Christians we have a steward- ship duty to protect the wonders of creation.” Speaking in favour of the attach- ment was Kevin Tunney of Tunney Planning Inc. He said he represents 70 per cent of the lands in question, privately owned in Ajax. “A ll of these people are long- standing members of the commu- nity who have owned and farmed DANCING QUEEN Photo by Mike Pochwat PICKERING — Ajax resident Tamara Sylvan and her 14-month-old daughter, Jayla, laugh and dance to the music during the Babytalk program at the Pickering Central Library recently. Mr. McIntyre was honoured as a recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award at the Dur- ham District School Board’s Jan. 22 meeting. During the presentation, Anderson principal John Morrison spoke about the teacher. “I ask you tonight, who is the real Duncan McIntyre?” asked Mr. Morrison. ‘Is he Casino Joe in a blue polyester suit, or Captain Factoid in a suit and cape,” con- tinued Mr. Morrison, referring to some of the characters Mr. McIntyre assumes to make math fun for his students. He also asked if Mr. McIntyre is the dedicated professional and head of the school’s math department, a humanitarian who taught in Haiti for two years. “He is many things to our school, but re- ally, he is our Merlin the magician,” said Mr. Morrison. As part of the presentation, Mr. McIntyre also received praise on behalf of Prime Min- ister Stephen Harper and Oshawa/Whitby MP Jim Flaherty, who was unable to attend. Mr. McIntyre said it is an honour to be awarded for doing something he loves. +ÁÊ,"< Ê"Ê Ài}°Êf£{°™™Ê°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°fÇ°xä n»Ê +ÁÊ,"< Ê Ài}°ÊfÓ£°™™Ê°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°f££°ää £ä»Ê +ÁÊ,"< Ê Ài}°ÊfÓx°™™Ê°°°°°°°°°°°°°°f£Î°ää +ÁÊ,"< Ê- /Ê Ài}°ÊfÎΰ™™Ê°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°f£Ç°ää n»Ê <<, ÁÊ Ài}°ÊfÓ{°™™Ê°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°f£Ó°xä £ä»Ê <<, ÁÊ Ài}°Êfә°™™Ê°°°°°°°°°°°°°°f£x°ää / Ê" Ê/, /- Ài}°Êf£ä°™™Ê°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°fx°xä ÕÃÌiÀÊ >ÀÁ]Ê ˆÞÊ >ÀÁ]Ê +Á->˜`܈V… +ÁÊ/, /<<Ê*<<ÒÊ Ài}°Êfn°™™Ê°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°f{°xä Dairy Queen® a family owned & operated business, has been a part of your neighborhood for over 60 years. He supports the attachment be- cause the owners were not given an opportunity to comment on the final Greenbelt Plan. He said Ajax was well aware of the position of the landowners to keep their land out of the Greenbelt. “The land has been eroded far beyond it being viable farmland,” Mr. Tunney said. “The lands are not environmentally sensitive.” Following the presentations, Ajax Mayor Steve Parish asked his peers to defeat the planning committee recommendation identifying lands to be removed. “A doption of option one (to re- ceive for information) is a viable alternative and a political compro- mise.” By choosing option one, Mayor Parish said it expedites resolving the issue of the Hwy. 401/407 link and puts the Region back on the Province’s good side. “There is a lot of upside to taking this approach and there is no down- side,” he said. Uxbridge Councillor Howie Her- rema said in the rural community the Greenbelt does not have a good reputation. “The only reason I can see for growing corn in Ajax is to stop the garbage from blowing into Whitby,” he said. If the Province wants to support agriculture, Scugog Mayor Marilyn Pearce said it has to do more. “To the farmer this means noth- ing,” she said. “You have given them nothing but a line on a map. “There is no way that I would say anyone on this council has done anything but support the Green- belt,” she said. “The issue is what was done was an injustice to the farming com- munity and the policies that support agriculture are going to have to be better.” The Province applauded Coun- cil’s decision. “Durham Regional Council has made an historic decision that re- spects and supports the integrity of the Greenbelt,” said John Gerretsen, minister of municipal affairs and housing, in a press release. “We are proud that the Council has recognized the importance of our efforts to preserve this valuable resource. The Greenbelt provides sufficient land for further growth in Durham, while leaving a legacy of protected greenspace for future generations.” The Greenbelt permanently pro- tects more than 1.8 million acres of prime agricultural and environ- mentally sensitive land around the Greater Golden Horseshoe. “It’s not just that this is bad, the solutions are there,” she said. “If we claim we’re going to be a leader in sustainability, it’s important we walk the talk.” Ward 1 Regional Councillor Bonnie Littley agreed with Coun. O’Connell. She said she hasn’t used pesticides for years and her own front lawn is filled with native plants. She said pesticides do pose a health risk and when used they run the risk of running off lawns and into the sewage system. Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles wanted to make sure there were pilot projects being done on municipal property to test the ef- fectiveness of alternatives to pesti- cides. The issue has concerned mem- bers of council in the past, said Wa rd 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean. “I know this is an issue of con- cern we all share. We’ve debated this a few times at council,” he said. With the report, he said, staff has done a good job of updating them on the situation. Coun. McLean said the current approach lets the City see how it can find alterna- tives and lead by example with- out bringing in a bylaw to forbid people from using pesticides. Coun. McLean is interested in Pickering participating in the Communities in Bloom program, which he said could raise more awareness about the issue and allow people to make the change through education. “I wouldn’t touch the stuff, per- sonally,” he said. Staff’s recommendation to con- tinue to investigate and evaluate alternative options passed. ✦ The from page 1 ‘The lands are not environmentally sensitive’: Tunney Council to continue looking at alternatives ✦ Council from page 1 Spend a Girls Day Out next weekend with Girls Inc. of Durham DURHAM — Girls Incorporated of Durham hosts its third annual Girls Day Out event on Feb. 3. I am angry that commercials shown during shows children are watching are not suitable for family viewing. They are often sexual, violent or mean spirited. The McCain commercial show- ing the little girl slamming the door repeatedly in the face of a young boy is dreadful. She then throws his bunch of flowers into the garbage and fills the vase with a drink, and down the hatch it goes. What a great message of disrespect and gluttony! The policewoman commercial denigrates a profession we rely on. Gender didn’t have any part in why I was angry. Male or female police officers or members of any profession do not de- serve to be used in such a tacky, unacceptable marketing ploy. I’ve seen the ad many times. However, seeing it on a Saturday afternoon was the final straw. Saturday is the main day children watch cartoons or other shows. Children aren’t buying cars and don’t need to be exposed to this kind of insulting advertising. I e-mailed KIA expressing my disapproval as a mother and grandmother, suggesting they advocate for family-safe commer- cials. Children stay up longer now and often watch shows like American/Canadian Idol. I would suggest readers concerned about television commercials e-mail the offending companies to make their views known. It may come as a shock -- what with it being 2007 and all -- but here goes: despite hav- ing a slight shopping obsession, I have never purchased anything online with my credit card. The reason for my lack of Internet shopping savvy is that I have a fear of having my identity stolen. I often get teased by friends who buy everything from Christmas presents to airline tickets online. They snap up deals on jeans and coats on e-Bay. They do their banking online. Me? I still go to the teller. “You know you can pay that Telus bill online,” the kind lady at TD said again last month. “You don’t have to come into the bank.” Yes, I know. Thank you. And it doesn’t just stop with the Inter- net. I am wary of handing out my informa- tion over the telephone and am loathe to shop using a credit card. So you can imagine how vindicated I felt when TJX Cos., the parent com- pany of Winners and HomeSense, an- nounced recently that hackers had sto- len some customer information from its computer network that handles credit card, debit card and cheque transac- tions. “You see what can happen?” I told my roommate as I scanned my banking statements, searching for evidence of fraud in my debit purchases. While my complete fear of stepping into the world of electronic finances may be slightly irrational, I don’t think it’s completely inappropriate. In a world of increasingly sophisti- cated electronic data storage, we are often left vulnerable to thieves. And while some incidents -- like the one at TJX -- are beyond our control, a lot of scams prey on people who are too busy or too trusting to investigate further. That’s where my “don’t-trust-any- one-with-financial-information” stance comes in handy. While I may miss the occasional deal online and be slightly more inconvenienced at the bank, at least I know I won’t become the victim of the next scam. It’s really quite easy - - it just takes a little common sense and some healthy fear. Reporter Izabela Jaroszynski’s column appears periodically. E-mail ijaroszynski @durhamregion.com. Izabela Ja roszynski staff writer EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com Province needs to meet JP shortage The administration of justice is not cheap. Consider the amount of tax dollars it takes to fully fund regional and provincial police forces, pay judges, justices of the peace, Crown attorneys and the thousands of staff who work for the Ministry of Justice in various roles. Then, add up all the money needed to house criminals in prisons and jails and pay all the staff involved with correctional services and incarceration. The cost, as a percentage of tax dollars, isn’t as steep as health care, but it’s still a very healthy bite of your property and income tax dollar. And maintenance of that system requires a constant infusion of new money to keep up with the population growth within Durham Region. That’s why the latest crisis in our justice system is extremely troubling. As reported by the Region of Durham solicitor, Brian Roy, many of those charged locally with provincial offences are see- ing their charges reduced or withdrawn because the Region has a paucity of justices of the peace. The Province has approved a number of retirements recently but has not bothered to fill the vacancies, says Mr. Roy. What this means is that all the police time spent writing up tickets, laying charges and doing investi- gations is wasted if the charges are thrown out because of delays and a lack of JPs. With growth a constant in the Greater Toronto Area and Dur- ham Region, the Province will have to get to work and quickly appoint the JPs needed so that the problem doesn’t intensify. The Region is quick to respond to the Durham Regional Po- lice each year when the service makes a request for more money to fund its requirements. That’s because the service points out that constant population growth demands that more cops be hired and more equipment be purchased to keep up. Precisely the same logic dictates that the Province replace JPs and hire more when needed to keep up with demand in Durham Region. There isn’t much point in laying charges and keeping the peace if, at the end of the process, there is nobody in place to render judgment. The Province had better be prepared to foot the bill rather than let those charged walk away. Work- ing with seniors every day, Elizabeth knows the ben- efi ts of maintaining good bone health. Unfortunately, she recognizes that osteo- porosis management is of- ten not a priority for many seniors. “People don’t realize that stopping their osteo- porosis medication when they have ‘brittle bones’ may lead to an increase in fractures and breaks, says Elizabeth. However, I see seniors everyday who feel fi ne and often stop taking their medication because they can’t see or feel their bones thinning. Sadly, this is even more pronounced for those on a fi xed income who often have to choose between buying food or paying for medications.” But now, there is good news for osteoporosis suf- ferers in Ontario. Fosavance, which com- bines the world’s leading osteoporosis treatment with vitamin D, an important component in treating the disease, is now fully cov- ered by the province’s drug benefi t plan. “Patients must sustain treat- ment to maintain healthy bone den- sity. In my prac- tice, however, the inability to con- tinually pay for medication is one of the main rea- sons why people stop taking their drugs. In fact, this can be as high as 50 per cent after one year of treat- ment for patients without private coverage,” ex- plains Dr. Aliya Khan, Director of the Cal- cium Disorders Clinic at St. Joseph’s Healthcare at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. “Now that the province of Ontario fully covers Fosavance, we should see more patients staying on their medication which will lead to better bone health. This decision should be applauded.” This investment is an- chored by the latest research and is being hailed by the osteoporosis community as a public health victory for the thousands of Ontarians living with the disease. Osteoporosis reduces bone density which causes bones to become fragile and susceptible to breaks and fractures. Fractures can occur as a result of a fall or injury, during the course of everyday activities like walking, picking up a bag of groceries or simply by rolling over in one’s sleep. Osteoporosis is a silent dis- ease that is often diagnosed only after a fracture has oc- curred. “Once diagnosed, peo- ple living with the disease should be vigilant about maintaining proper bone health year-round,” says Dr. Khan. It is important to stay on your medication even though you won’t see the benefi ts right away.” Photo Facial Rejuvenation • Chemical Peels Laser Hair Removal • Acne Light Treatments Microdermabrasion • Accent® Radio Frequency Non-Surgical “Lunch time” Face Lift MEDICALLY SUPERVISED - NO DOWN TIME! But the local MP said he did take the opportunity to speak up for the release of Chinese-Canadian Huseyin Celil, detained in a Chinese prison for suspicion of terrorism links. While Canadian and Chinese offi- cials obviously disagree over the con- sular case, a strong friendship still exists between the two nations, said the minister. “Having said that though, (our) Prime Minister has been clear he’s going to be frank with all nations on the issues of human rights,” he said in an interview. “And I was very frank with their media and the Minister of Finance.” Mr. Flaherty said he handed Chi- nese Finance Minister Jin Renqing a “formal diplomatic note” requesting the Canadian prisoner’s release. It was “received politely” but that’s all, he added. The minister, who met with a num- ber of senior political and business of- ficials while in Beijing and Shanghai, said it’s important for a trading nation like Canada to accept an invitation to visit China, an emerging economic giant in today’s global marketplace. “It means a lot to them to have face time in their own country,” he explained. He and Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the People’s Bank of China, have met at 11 international conferences and on other occasions over the last six months. “We’re old friends,” the minister said. “I think we understand each other well.” During his time there, Mr. Flaherty said he also heard from Canadians doing business in China, challenged by regulations that are applied differ- ently in different regions and restric- tions that are placed on foreign invest- ment. “I raised these and other issues with Chinese officials and we agreed to work together to eliminate impedi- ments to future expansion in both countries,” he added. Mr. Flaherty believes there’s a fond- ness for Canadians that exists in China not only among politicians but the general population as a whole. Even today, the country still remembers and revers Norman Bethune, the Ca- nadian war doctor who worked Chi- nese front lines when Japan invaded in the late 1930s. And while visiting the Great Wall last week, the minister said he was ap- proached by a Chinese man speaking English. When he heard Mr. Flaherty was Canadian, he answered back, “G ood friend.” Even if your child thinks homework is useless or stupid, it still has to be done. Fortunately, there are ways to help kids complete homework assignments...and give parents peace of mind. First, don’t try to change your child’s opinion about the value of homework. Instead, acknowledge that its very exis- tence is a blight upon his or her potential for a happy life. Instead of berating them for bad atti- tudes and sermonizing about responsibil- ity, concede this: “You do seem to have a lot of homework. It seems that you don’t have any time for anything else.” When your child believes that you un- derstand his or her perspective, he or she won’t consider you a cop from school. That’s why we start not with speeches but with listening. After you have established trust, here are some things to talk about: 1. “I know you believe homework is stu- pid. But it exists. So, we must somehow do it.” 2. “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could discover a way to get the homework done and still have some personal life left over?” 3. “What if I could show you a way to cut your homework time in half?” Yo u may have to spend a little time selling this, but perse- vere because almost every kid would like an easier way to do things. What you have to do is help your child organize and learn how to do homework. Let’s begin with organization. 1. Set up a study area in your home and stock it with all the tools needed for homework. 2. Sit down with your child and a large calendar to analyze his or her commit- ments. Plot out all the activities, lessons, sports, jobs and so on that your child has. This may reveal that your child is doing too much. 3. Once you know the schedule, you can begin to plan certain times for home- work every night. Work with your child while you make this schedule. Don’t try to cut the number of homework hours down yet – that will come with practice. Simply plan for the number of hours currently being spent or the number of hours the teacher suggests. Now, let us look at how to do home- work. The most common problems are not knowing what to do or how to start. Begin by making sure that your child is able to determine what is needed to complete the assignment. Most kids tend to glaze over instructions without really understanding them. Then, decide how long it will take. Make sure he or she knows all the es- sential requirements: 1. What am I supposed to do? 2. Do I know how to do that? 3. Do I have all the tools (books, mate- rial, etc.) necessary? 4. How long will it take me? In the beginning, you will have to help your child plan and track the time each section takes. Work toward the goal of completing each section within the allot- ted time. It will seem like a hassle, but follow these simple rules and homework will be done faster and more accurately – I guar- antee it. [ Basketball ] Diners dish out loss to Dickson’s AJAX — A well-balanced of- fensive attack propelled Michael’s Eatery to a 53-45 win over Dickson Printing in Game 1 of Ajax Men’s Basketball Association action last Wednesday night. Louis Davis led the diners with 16 points, assisted by Luke Luuk- konen with 12 and Kitson Wallace with 10. Greg Rowe provided nearly all of the firepower for Dickson’s, scoring 34 of their 45 points, including six three pointers. Clayton Gall continued his mastery of the court, scoring 27 points to lead ESN Pack- aging to a 59-40 victory over North Alliance Press in the second game of the evening. Big man David Jack- son added 14 points for the packag- ers. Frank Spagnuolo once again had the hot hand for NAP, dropping 14 points. The closest game of the evening saw Burgundy outdistance Top Shelf 51 -45. Sherwin James led the charge for Burgundy with 25 points. James was backed up by Allan Gomes with 12 and Claude Whitfield with 10. Top Shelf got good production from Rob Hare and Mike Jovanov, both with 13 points. Spartans wave ‘bye’ to solid hockey season Dunbarton awaits McLaughlin-Anderson playoff series winner By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com PICKERING — After a solid reg- ular season, the Dunbarton High School Spartans senior boys’ hockey team is waiting in anticipation for the Durham playoffs to begin. But, after the two-week break for exams, the Spartans will have to be a little more patient for the post-season, as the club earned a bye through the opening round of the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) playoffs, slated for the week of Feb. 5 to 9. Dunbarton’s 5-2-1 regular-season record enabled it to be one of four clubs to earn the bye, thus the Spartans will play the winner of the Oshawa’s McLaugh- lin Trojans and Whitby’s Anderson Raiders, who’ll meet in the best-of- three opening-round series. Oshawa’s Eastdale Eagles, Pick- ering’s St. Mary Monarchs and the Uxbridge Secondary School Tigers also earned first-round byes. While Dunbarton coach Brad Re- eson is happy his club advanced di- rectly to the second round, he’s wary that the road gets much tougher from here on out. “You’re going to have to beat two good teams (to get to the final) so, either way, you have to be playing good hockey,” says Reeson. The Spartans finished off the reg- ular season on a solid note, scorch- ing the Courtice Secondary School Cougars 6-2 in Courtice on Jan. 22. Mike Ross led the way with a two- goal effort. Brett Chisholm, Cody Pollard, Cole Watkins and Blake Boddy were the other Dunbarton goal scorers. Reeson says this year’s incarnation of the Spartans boasts a deep and talented crew of forwards who’ve shared the scoring load throughout the regular season. Most of all, how- ever, the team has received strong and consistent goaltending from the duo of Aaron Williams and Andrew Leclair this season. “G oaltending, as well as special teams play, will be so important in the playoffs. I’m really surprised and very pleased with our goaltending. Both guys have been consistent all year. I was concerned about that at the beginning of the season,” he says. In order to mitigate the long layoff between the exam break and the playoffs, the Spartans are taking part in the annual Father Goetz Classic tournament in Mississauga on Feb. 2 and 3. Forty-eight teams are in the 25th annual tourney, with the Spartans starting out against Scol- lard Hall (North Bay) on Feb. 2 at 10 a.m. Crestwood (Peterborough) and Lakeshore Catholic (Port Colborne) are also in Dunbarton’s ‘H’ pool at the Goetz tourney. “It’s a great warmup for the play- offs,” says Reeson. “It should get us back in gear.” Dunbarton has one tournament win thus far this season, winning the Yo rk University event in November. The Spartans also competed at the fourth annual Pickering Panthers/ News Advertiser High School Clas- sic in December, where a loss to Courtice Secondary put them out of the running for a playoff spot. AJAX — Intermediate boys’ bas- ketball teams from Ajax swept their division crowns at the third annual Ajax Invitational Boys’ Basketball Showcase. Hosted by Cadarackque Public School in Ajax under coach An- drew Ilkiw, the tournament, held last Thursday through Saturday, brought together 24 teams (eight in each division), mostly from Dur- ham Region, with several teams coming in from Brampton (Cardi- nal Newman Cardinals), and North Yo rk (Lawrence Heights Eagles and Oakdale Park Dragons). The Carruthers Creek Coyotes of Ajax captured the Ajax ‘A’ Division crown after defeating the Oakdale Park Dragons 60-37 in the final. The Coyotes defeated host Cadarackque Cougars in the semifinal contest by a narrow 38-37 count. In the other semifinal, Oakdale Park downed the Cardinal Newman Cardinals 51-37. In the ‘A’ consolation title game, the Lawrence Heights Eagles de- feated the R.H. Cornish Cougars of Port Perry 37-33. Meanwhile, in the Bulldog ‘B’ Di- vision, the Lincoln Alexander Lynx and the Alexander Graham Bell Knights met in the all-Ajax final, with the Lynx earning a close 48-42 victory. In the ‘B’ semifinals, Alexander Graham Bell defeated Sir John A. Macdonald of Pickering 29-23 and Lincoln Alexander downed the Bolton C. Falby Bulldogs 58-52 in overtime. In the consolation final, the St. Elizabeth Seaton Stars of Pickering defeated the Dr. Robert Thornton Thunderbirds of Whitby 45-29. In the Cougars ‘C’ Division, the Lincoln Avenue Lions of Ajax cap- tured the title with a 43-31 victory over the Father Joseph Venini Bull- dogs of Oshawa. The Lions advanced to the final after a 48-33 semifinal victory over the Woodcrest Wildcats of Oshawa. In the other semi, Father Venini downed the S.A. Cawker Eagles of Port Perry 35-16.
