Leading up to and following the 2004 and 2005 Walk for Memories, the agency received calls from several supporters reporting that someone they didn’t know had come to their doors asking for do- nations. The agency does not conduct an official residential canvass dur- ing Alzheimer Awareness Month, which is January, or at any other time during the year. Receipts for income tax pur- poses are issued for donations of $10 or more. People should avoid giving cash or their credit card numbers to people they don’t know. Editorial Page 6 By Danielle Milley dmilley@durhamregion.com PICKERING — The winter warmth has meant a little extra padding for the City’s finances. With temperatures staying above freezing for much of November and December, and few sightings of that cold white stuff called snow, the City of Pickering was able to save some green in its budget. “Probably the biggest effect was at the tail end of 2006, we didn’t spend nearly as much money as we bud- geted for winter control,” said Richard Holborn, division head, municipal property and engineering. He said there was $120,000 left in the materials budget (sand and salt) and $30,000 unused that had been budgeted to cover overtime. There were just four days in De- cember where winter crews were out salting or sanding and none in No- vember. With the 2006 budget year ending Dec. 31, even if the next few months are full of snow and ice it won’t affect the surplus. Not that a winter of below freezing days and treacherous roads seems likely for Pickering residents with En- vironment Canada forecasting warm- er than normal conditions. “It’s been mild and the forecast (for the rest of winter) is mild,” Mr. Hol- born said. The money saved in winter mainte- nance may be used to offset overruns in other areas or could be marked as a surplus. The City treasurer will make that decision. The warmer weather hasn’t just freed up money, it’s also freed up staff time to do some maintenance work around the City. Mr. Holborn said staff has had more time to continue with ditching and grading in rural areas, street sweeping with the new street sweeper, pruning trees, and picking up litter (in addi- tion to extra time there is the bonus that it isn’t covered by snow). It doesn’t matter what the weather is like, there is always work to be done, he said. But, now staff has the time to focus on the work that might otherwise take a back seat to a snowy day, or to get a jump start on spring tasks. RIDE wraps up hitting the century club Chief ‘disappointed’ with sustained numbers By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The number of drunk driving charges issued during the 2006 edition of the annual Festive RIDE campaign was slightly lower than the previous year, but still too high for comfort, according to Durham police Chief Vernon White. “I am pleased we saw a seven per cent decrease (in charges), the chief said in an interview Monday. “But I am still appalled and disgust- ed we had over 100 impaired drivers.” During the RIDE (Reduce Im- paired Driving Everywhere) cam- paign launched in late November Durham cops stopped 22,655 vehicles A WALK AND A FEW LAUGHS IN PICKERING AJ Groen/ News Advertiser photo Despite the brisk cool wind these three friends went for a five-kilometre walk along the Waterfront Trail in Pickering. OPP hunting for men throwing objects at cars Ajax woman avoids injury in Hwy. 401 incident By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com PICKERING — For the second time in less than a week police are investigat- ing reports of objects being thrown onto cars from overpasses on Hwy. 401 in Pickering. Ontario Provincial Police said an Ajax woman was lucky to escape injury when her windshield was shattered by some- thing thrown from an overpass at Whites Road as she travelled in the eastbound express lanes just after 4 a.m. Sunday. The startled woman was showered with glass particles after the as-yet-undetermined object slammed into her car, said OPP Sergeant Cam Wool- ley. “Whatever broke the wind- shield didn’t penetrate the windshield,” he said. The woman told investigators she’d seen three males, one of them wearing a “distinctive” coat with a grey, white and black camouflage pattern, Sgt. Woolley said. The three are believed to have run off to the north after the woman’s Mazda was damaged. Another motorist told police he was driving in the area around the same time early Sunday when his car was struck by an object tossed from an overpass. That driv- er also told police he’d seen three males before his car was struck. And last Wednesday, a motor- ist contacted Durham police after the windshield of his truck was shattered by something thrown from an overpass on Hwy. 401 near Liverpool Road in Pickering. That driver also reported see- ing three males. Even if a driver isn’t hit by a projectile the possibility of a vehicle going out of control in such an incident is high, said Sgt. Woolley. “It’s like firing a gun into a crowd,” he said. Anyone caught throwing objects onto moving vehicles could be subject to criminal charges such as mischief en- dangering life, Sgt. Woolley said. That’s the charge laid against a teenager who was busted for throwing a chunk of con- crete at a Clarington woman’s car as she travelled on the 401 through Oshawa last Jan. 29. Nadia McLean sustained serious facial injuries when the rock pierced the windshield of her car and hit her. Anyone with information on the latest incidents is asked to call Whitby OPP at 905-668-3388. That number was down just slightly from the 2005 total of 108 drunk driving charges. Over the course of the seven- week blitz officers made doz- ens of demands for roadside breath tests from drivers sus- pected of drinking and issued 12-hour licence suspensions to 167 motorists who registered borderline blood alcohol lev- els. During the campaign Dur- ham police officials expressed chagrin over the high number of alleged drunk drivers being nabbed and conducted a num- ber of publicity efforts aimed at reinforcing the message that police would be out in force over the holiday season to nab impaired motorists. Chief White said strategic deployment of RIDE person- nel resulted in a high rate of detection of suspected drunk drivers. But motorists knew police would be out looking for impaired drivers and many still chose to take the chance, he said. “You would think the mes- sage would be clear for people, but it’s not clear,” he said. The chief suggested tougher sen- tencing for convicted drunk drivers might send the kind of strong message current infor- mation campaigns do not. Lengthy jail terms and sei- zure of vehicles belonging to repeat offenders would be a good place to start, he said. “Durham Regional Police can’t do it alone but we can certainly influence politicians and we can influence public policy to move in that direc- tion,” Chief White said. In the final week of the pro- gram 11 more people were charged with drunk-driving offences. Following is a list of those charged: • Joseph Cervenka, 31, Os- hawa, exceed • Jamie A. The unseasonably warm conditions also helped City staff finish a few tasks sooner. “Construction that wasn’t quite complete in November was able to be carried on in November and December,” Mr. Holborn said. Some of the City’s road proj- ects were started a little later in the year than usual so workers probably appreciated not hav- ing to work outside in freezing temperatures. “We probably still would have got (the projects) com- plete, but just under different circumstances,” Mr. Holborn said. Three of four playground projects were finished before the end of the year with the fourth being completed in the first week of the new year. The latter would have had to wait until the spring thaw to be fin- ished had the ground been fro- zen. The warm weather has helped others get some out- side tasks completed: all of the landscaping at the first phase of the Brookfield Homes site on Kingston Road has been completed in the past few weeks. Wearing a Whitby Wildcats jersey, the federal finance minister and Whitby-Os- hawa MP laced up his skates and joined a group of local children at Iroquois Park for some hockey exercises. “These players and youngsters like them across the country are starting down the road to a lifetime of healthy, active living,” he said. Mr. Flaherty says he hopes the tax credit -- which came into effect on Janu- ary 1 -- will make organized sport more affordable for families and he encour- ages parents to take advantage by saving their receipts and submitting them to the Canada Revenue Agency with their income tax returns. A credit of up to $500 will apply for every child under 16 (or 18 if the child has a disability) that is enrolled in an eligible fitness program, such as soccer, dancing or horseback riding. A full list of criteria for program eligibility is avail- able online at www.cra.gc.ca/fitness. With distractions like television and video games, Mr. Flaherty says it is im- perative for parents to push their chil- dren to become physically active on a regular basis to combat the growing problem of childhood obesity. A recent Statistics Canada report found that obesity rates among children and adults have increased substan- tially during the past 25 years. The survey found that among children aged six to 17, the likelihood of being overweight or obese tended to rise with time spent watching television, playing video games or using the com- puter. In 2004, eight per cent of children were considered obese, representing an estimated 500,000 children nationwide. “In order to increase our children’s fit- ness levels we have to get them moving,” Mr. Flaherty said. “They need to break a sweat. They need to challenge their bod- ies, their hearts, their lungs.” Seven-year old Olivia Kariunas un- derstands that message: “Kids should be involved in sports because if we don’t, we’ll get really fat and we would be un- healthy,” the avid hockey player says. Plus, she adds, “it’s really fun.” But that ‘fun’ doesn’t come cheap. Mark Roberts says that he spends close to $7,000 a year -- not in- cluding equipment -- to enroll his son in hockey and his two daughters in gymnastics. “It’s very expensive,” he said, add- ing that he is looking to the tax credit to help alleviate at least some of that cost. But Olivia’s mother, Susan Kariunas, says that after taxes the fitness credit -- which will turn out to be about $80 per child -- will only put a small dent into the total cost of hav- ing children involved in organized sport. “It’ll help, but it’s not going to be that big of an impact,” she said. “That’s like a new pair of skates or maybe a session of swimming lessons.” A strong heart can lead to a tax credit What is the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit? A non-refundable tax credit on eligible amounts of up to $500 paid by parents to register a child in a program of physical activity. The credit is calculated by multiplying the eligible amount by the lowest marginal tax rate (15.5 per cent in 2007). To qualify, the program must be an ongoing, supervised program with activities that contribute to cardio-respiratory endurance, plus either muscular strength, mus- cular endurance, flexibility or balance. Some examples are: dance lessons, hockey and golf. Information about how to claim the tax credit will be included in the General In- come Tax and Benefit Guide 2007. Ring stolen from Pickering jewelry store By Crystal Crimi ccrimi@durhamregion.com DURHAM —With the mu- nicipal election barely over, Oshawa residents are again going to the polls. The Durham District School Board unanimously agreed to fill its vacant Os- hawa trustee position with a byelection rather than ap- pointment. The vacancy ex- ists following the November election of Julia McCrea, a Yo rk Region District School Board teacher. Under the Ed- ucation Act, a trustee cannot be employed by any school board; they also have to take a leave of absence during an election. “I believe this (byelection) is the most fair choice that we can make,” said Oshawa Trustee Kathleen Hopper, during the Jan. 8 special board meeting to deal with the issue. Trustee Hopper said the replacement trustee should be the choice of the people, not the board. “I’ve been in contact with a lot of residents in Oshawa, a lot of them feel a byelection is the way to go,” said Oshawa Trustee Larry Jacula. “I said a lot of them, not all of them.” Ms. McCrea, when reached Tuesday morning, declined to comment. In an interview following the meeting, Oshawa’s Jane Hu rst, a member of O’Neill CVI’s school community council, said she doesn’t like the board’s decision, but un- derstands its reasons. She is concerned about the time and money associated with a byelection. Oshawa City Clerk Sandra Kranc estimated a byelection at $150,000, said Craig Burch, the board’s director of educa- tion. The costs are to be borne by the school board under the Municipal Elections Act. “The dollars that need to be spent, I don’t think it’s necessary,” said Ms. Hurst. “They could have appoint- ed experienced people like Susan Shetler or Michael Barrett and had it over and done with and going on with business.” Pickering Trustee Chris Braney said because it’s the beginning of a new term, he feels very strongly a byelec- tion should be held. “There have certainly been instances in the past where I’ve seen scenarios such as this with vacated trustee seats coming closer to the end of the term,” said Trustee Braney. “Given that, I would have looked at the other options that have been presented to us perhaps, ap- pointing or going through an interview.” Ms. Hurst was also disappointed by how few people attended the meeting. Of the dozen or so who did, many were candidates in the last election. “I really think if people were truly concerned about all this, they would have been here tonight,” said Ms. Hurst. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Reader welcomes chairman’s return To the editor: Congratulations are once again in order for Durham Re- gion Chairman Roger Anderson, elected to a new four-year term. Mr. Anderson was uncontest- ed and the vote was unanimous. It is obvious that the 28 Regional councillors, with a total of more than 300 years of political expe- rience, know a good man when they see one. Glover Hutchinson Ajax Low voter turnout no reason to dismiss call for elected chairperson To the editor: In his letter of Dec. 24 re- jecting the call for an elected regional chairperson, Derek Nelson points out that, due to the very low voter turnout, the 89 per cent of those who voted for this motion in the last mu- nicipal election fail to constitute a majority of people in the re- gion. That he is correct about the small voter turnout is an unfor- tunate reality of democracy. But when he implies that the resulting call for an elected re- gional chairperson should be considered irrelevant, he is mis- taken. For there is not a single demo- cratically elected regional politi- cian today who does not owe his or her own position to the very same process that reached this conclusion. And there are none whose electoral victory received the level of universal support or the number of votes that this motion attained. So if the results of such a sweeping consensus are a sham, then how counterfeit are the powers with which this region is governed today? Coincidentally, another re- ality of our democracy is that those whose near unanimous voice called for an elected re- gional chairperson are almost certainly the very same people who will be voting in the next municipal election. And any elected politician who chooses to ignore such an overwhelming consensus does so at his or her own political peril. Brian Densham Ajax Salary increase deserved To the editor: Let me be among the first to congratulate MPPs on their well-deserved salary increases. I disagree totally with the premise that greed motivates the changes to their compensa- tion packages. The nonpartisan office of In- tegrity Commissioner Coulter Osborne recommended this salary increase which still puts MPP’s far below their federal counterparts, while serving ba- sically the same number of con- stituents. I fail to understand how we expect to attract qualified indi- viduals to public life with com- pensation packages which in no way reflect their sacrifices and stressful working condi- tions. It undermines democracy and does a disservice to these men and women who dedicate themselves to public service and spend long hours away from their families. It’s time to show our elected members that we commend them for the valuable work they do and stop demeaning their worthwhile contributions. This is the second year that Kim Goode has rounded up a team to create the houses in a fun af- ternoon at her home, with materials donated by her family. Working every lunch hour, the girls raised the money and then went on a par- ent-supervised shopping spree to purchase books, toys and games, which they donated to Toy Mountain. IN THE COMMUNITY /4& I sometimes wonder, usually in one of my unemployed moments, what it must be like to work in an indus- try where the government has mandated your job security. For instance, people have to have car insurance. You cannot legally operate a vehicle with- out it. You must file a tax return, something most of us cannot do without engaging the talents of accountancy professionals. It’s no guarantee of success, but still, it must be sweet to know that regardless of the economy, Canadian dollar or whatever, people have to buy what you’re selling. Imagine if those same rules applied to actors. In other words, everyone over the age of 16 had to have an actor. Of course you probably wouldn’t start off with Orson Welles. Sta- tistics would show, no doubt, that young boys are especially prone to burning out or ruining their actors. The Actors Bureau would have hundreds of tables proving that men under the age of 21 are much more likely to be involved in a performance ac- cident than, say, young women. They would, therefore, institute a “graduated system” of actors. Start the kid out with a mime for a year or so and then work him up to an extra before finally allowing him to have full use of a genuine, theatrically-trained thespian. Just getting a kid safely out of his teens would employ a lot of performers. If all this sounds silly, think for a moment. There are any number of times when an actor would come in very handy. That get-together you’d planned with the new neighbors is tank- ing horribly. You seem to have nothing in common and con- versation is like pulling teeth. Simply dial 1-800-Noel-Coward and within minutes an actor is at your door to make your do the event of the social season. Or perhaps the boss wants you to take the new client out to dinner the same night you nor- mally play poker with the boys. No worries. One phone call, a little make-up, and you can be in two places at once. Of course, staying with the Insurance model, the minute you called your actor for help in an emergency one of two things would necessarily occur. He would either jack his rates up astronomically for the next time you need him or he would can- cel your policy, referring to you as a bad entertainment risk. Yo u would phone your actor and try, in vain, to explain how your surprise birthday party mishap was not your fault. That someone else gave it away. Your actor would ring his hands and explain to you that in spite of record profits being posted by every actor in Canada, most of that money was being paid out to unscrupulous individuals committing acting fraud. Un- savory types, bleeding the act- ing industry dry by submitting claims for the services of a per- former when, in fact, an author or public speaker might have sufficed. Eventually, your actor would graciously take pity on you and allow you to keep paying him for his services. Your rates would skyrocket of course and you’d have to increase your de- ductible. Soon you would learn that for small luncheons and book club meetings you’d be better off not calling your actor at all. You’d just learn how to tell a few jokes and juggle. Ye p, that’d be nice. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Fo llow Neil’s BLOG drinfo.ca/croneblog.html. Actors should be essential employees Neil Crone enter laughing Tr agedy underlines costs of drinking and driving D urham residents didn’t need to wait to see the final RIDE statistics for the holiday season to get a graphic, horrifying look at the consequences of drinking and driving. The grim death toll suffered by the St-Denis family of Pickering is all the evidence anyone could ever need that drinking and driving is a tragic mix. The St-Denis’s were on their way to a Florida vacation on Dec. 23 when a man whose blood alcohol level was two to three times the legal limit smashed into their vehicle on a Pennsylvania road. The man was going northbound on the southbound lanes and the impact resulted in the death of husband and father Roger, 52, son Paul, 21, and daughter Angela Michelle, 15. Only mother Angela, 52, and 22-year-old daughter Therese, survived. The driver of the other vehicle, Jeremy Grimes, 23, has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide and remains in jail. Ms. St-Denis has shown incredible grace under extreme pressure saying she forgives Mr. Grimes but just doesn’t want to ever see him take the wheel again. Of course, Mr. Grimes should never have been driving to start with. That’s the only message to be taken away from such a tragedy. If you drink, you can’t drive. The stakes are far too high. Yet far too many people have drunk beyond the legal limit, taken their car keys and hit our roads and streets these past weeks. RIDE numbers just released show more than 100 people blew over the .08 amount when breathalyzed. They’ll get automatic licence suspensions and will face other penalties and fines costing them thousands of dollars. Even with all the publicity generated about the penalties and lives lost due to drunk driving, people continue to do it. Perhaps there simply have to be tougher, more severe pen- alties. Maybe an automatic two-year licence suspension is needed for a first offence, a jail term for a second offence. Make drinking and driving such a massive blow to a person’s life and livelihood that only a complete imbecile would even consider getting behind the wheel after one or more for the road. Education is a key element but enforcement is also essential. If you drink, don’t drive. It seems we can’t say it enough. This Week’s Question: Should the minimum wage be raised beyond $8 per hour? As of this week, the train engineer was moved to the freight division of Canadian National (CN) Rail, along with more than 30 of his engineer colleagues whose GO Train jobs were eliminated when CN implemented staffing changes Dec. 30. “I’m glad to be going, it was getting exasperating,” he said. “I was doing all the driving that was previously shared between two drivers. A 10-hour drive by yourself in any vehicle is not a good idea.” For his last shift on Friday, Mr. Whitnall drove the train be- tween Oshawa and Burlington from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. with no one to relieve him and no break except for the brief period when the train turns around. Before, he said the two engi- neers would take turns driv- ing so the other could use the washroom, eat lunch or rest. GO Trains on the Lakeshore corridor used to operate with two engineers, a conductor and an assistant conductor. GO Transit recently asked CN -- which supplies the engineers -- to cut 34 positions as a cost- saving measure. Now, there is one engineer and two conduc- tors. The union representing the engineers filed a grievance, but a federal arbitrator upheld the decision last month. Joe Lucifora, local chairman for Teamsters Canada Rail Con- ference for Toronto South, said cutting the positions could put passengers in danger. “It’s a huge safety concern. These engineers are on duty as early as 3:30 a.m. working up to 12-hour shifts,” he said. “With only one of them where there used to be two, fatigue is a big issue.” Go Transit spokesman Ed Shea stressed rail transporta- tion is federally regulated and said any changes must meet strict standards. “Transport Canada wouldn’t allow anything unsafe,” he said. “CN has consulted with rail safety experts. We are confident this is fully consistent with safe train operations.” Mr. Shea said GO Transit reg- ularly asks CN to look for cost- cutting measures, to help keep passenger fares and provincial subsidies as low as possible. Cutting an engineer position made sense, Mr. Shea said, be- cause GO Transit was one of the last in North America to put two engineers on a train. CN spokesman Mark Hall- man echoed these sentiments saying the new arrangement is safe. When asked if the changes were to blame for two days of delays and cancelled trains on Jan. 2 and 3, he confirmed there were “teething problems” but assured that everything has since returned to normal. As far as the union is con- cerned, this isn’t over. Mr. Luci- fora said a grievance procedure is still underway. In addition to safety concerns, he believes the new arrangement will cause ongoing delays, because two engineers are needed to quickly turn the trains around at Oshawa and Burlington. As for Mr. Whitnall, he feels bad for his fellow engineers still driving the GO Trains and wor- ried about the passengers. “You’re going 80 miles an hour with 2,000 people on board and you’re stopping at the stations every few minutes,” he said. “You have to be alert ... and that’s hard when you’re doing all the driving yourself.” www.dce.ca Register online at Durham Continuing Education 1 DAY WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE FRIDAYS AND SATURDAYS • OUTLOOK • PUBLISHER • KEYBOARDING • ADOBE PHOTOSHOP • FLASH MX • WEBPAGE DESIGN • DREAM WEAVER • AND MORE 120 Centre St. S., Oshawa WE ALSO PROVIDE COURSES IN EVENING CLASSES STARTING SOON Classes run 1 night a week for 5 or 6 weeks from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. COURSE FEE LOCATION/DATE COURSE FEE LOCATION/DATE DAY CLASSES • EVENING CLASSES • ONE DAY WORKSHOPS Accounting Manual Level 1 . . . $195 Osh Jan 17 Wed Accounting Manual Level 2 . . . $175 Osh Feb 28 Wed CorelDRAW 12 Introduction . . . $195 Osh Jan 16 Tues First Look at Computers . . . . $170 Osh Jan 15 Mon Access 2003 Level 1 . . . . . . $195 Osh Jan 17 Wed Access 2003 Level 2 . . . . . . $195 Osh Feb 28 Wed Excel 2003 Level 1 . . . . . . . $170 Osh Jan 16 Tues . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Advancing to the gold-medal game against Michigan’s Belle Tire squad, the Lightning faced an emergency call-up goaltender who stoned Durham West shooters as Michigan posted a narrow 2-1 win. In the semifinal contest, the Light- ning edged the host Mississauga Chiefs 3-2. In pool play, the Lightning faced Bur- lington (5-1), Team Newfoundland (7-3), here getting practice for the upcom- ing Canada Winter Games, the Stoney Creek Sabres (3-2) before being handed their only pool loss from the Markham-Stouffville Stars (3-1). The Christmas break did not finish there as Lightning intermediate players Ta ra Wat chorn, Natalie Spooner, Kirst- en Roach and Lisa Plenderleith partici- pated in a Team Ontario U18 training camp that saw them play against Na- tional Women’s Hockey League teams Mississauga and Oakville, as well as spending several days in training with teammates. Additionally, Provincial Women’s Hockey League play continued for the Lightning intermediates with a some- what shortened bench. Next up for the Lightning interme- diates is their own tournament in early February and then, for the Ontario under-18 players, an additional train- ing camp and trip to the Yukon for the Canada Winter Games, in Whitehorse from Feb. 23 to March 10. Pickering twins off to nationals Acacia Hill to skate at senior nationals, brother Asher to junior Canadians By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com PICKERING — They’re figure skat- ing twins from Pickering who compete at an extremely high level. Asher Hill, 15, and his sister, Acacia both attend Grade 11 at Dunbarton High School in the school’s elite ath- lete program where both are ‘A’ stu- dents. But, that’s where the similarities end. Asher is shy and reserved, while Acacia is more talkative and outgoing. Acacia competes exclusively in the ju- nior women’s free skate, while Asher trains and competes in two skating disciplines, the novice men’s free skate and dance. What they have in common is a love of skating that’s propelled them to the heights of Canadian skating as both will compete at the upcoming national championships next month -- Aca- cia at the 2007 BMO Financial Group Canadian Championship at the Hali- fax Metro Centre from Jan. 15 to 21, and Asher at the 2007 BMO Financial Group Skate Canada Junior Nation- als at Brampton’s Powerade Centre from Jan. 31 to Feb. 3, where he will compete in the free skate and dance events. Acacia says finishing near the top at nationals is her ultimate goal, al- though it’s her first time at the senior Canadian event skating at the junior level. “I just want to skate well and come in the top five,” says Acacia, who skates at the York Region Skating Academy, under coach Katarina Papafotiou. Acacia skated at the junior nationals last year where she placed 11th. She earned her way to the Canadian championship after a strong show- ing at the Eastern Challenge event in Moncton, New Brunswick. Missing a triple-double combination in her short program where she finished 13th, Acacia recovered nicely in the long program, placing eighth, which put her in 10th place overall. Her 10th place finish was enough to qualify her for nationals. “It was a huge accomplishment,” she says of qualifying for her first se- nior nationals competition. At the Central Ontario Sectionals in Richmond Hill last month, Acacia placed second in the junior women’s event to earn her way to the Eastern Challenge. Meanwhile, Asher is a veteran of sorts at the junior nationals, coming off a gold-medal performance in the pre-novice dance category with long- time partner Kharis Ralph, 15, of To- ronto, last year. “We’re looking to take the novice crown this year,” says Asher, matter-of- factly. “Hopefully we can win. I know this is the first time in novice. Second place would be fine, but we would like to win.” And, there’s good reason to believe the partners from the Scarboro Skating Club will be somewhere near the top at the junior nationals. Their season has gotten progressively better. At the Eastern Challenge, the dance duo had a shaky compulsory skate, fin- ishing in seventh spot. The result was disappointing, but Asher and Kharis were determined to put it all together in the free dance. “We didn’t want to stay at the bot- tom, so we did what we had to do,” says Asher, who splits time between the Yo rk Region Skating Academy and the Scarboro Skating Club. He’s coached in dance by Ajax’s Jon and Carol Lane and by Vesna Markovich in free skate. What they did was put together a perfect free dance routine to vault all the way up to first place in novice dance at the Eastern Challenge. In his novice free skate at the East- ern Challenge, Asher was second after the short program, despite missing a combination jump. He notes he skated one of his best long programs of the season, but was still relegated to third place overall, more than enough to en- sure his spot in free skate at the junior nationals. At the Central Ontario Sections in Richmond Hill, Asher finished the short program in third place in novice free dance. After the long program, he moved down to fourth overall, which was enough to advance to the Eastern Challenge. Skating since age two-and-a-half, the sport has always been a major part of the twins’ lives. For Acacia, she’s found skating to be a release from the pressures of the day. “Just being on the ice. I feel free. I can clear my head. If I have a bad day at school I always have skating to clear my head.” Fa r from a sibling rivalry between the twins to post the best results, in fact Acacia and Asher say they mostly work co-operatively to help one an- other improve on the ice. “I’ll help him if he asks,” says Acacia. “I like his dancing because he’s really good. His strength is his artistry, so he helps me in that way.” “If I’m having trouble with a jump, I’ll copy her,” adds Asher. Being twins, the obvious question is have they ever partnered together at any point in their skating careers? The answer is -- once, and it didn’t go well. “They were about seven and it was just once and that was it,” answered their mother, Merville. “They were going to kill one another, so that was the end of that.” Photo By Mike Pochwat Twins Acacia and Asher Hill, both 15, have been skating since age two-and-a-half. Aca- cia will compete in the junior women’s event at the Canadian championships in Halifax, while Asher will skate in the novice free skate and novice dance events at the junior nationals in Brampton. Undisciplined Panthers downed by Stouffville Spirit Costly penalties undo strong early effort By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com PICKERING — One of the Pickering Panthers’ season-long bugaboos re- turned in their first game back after the Christmas break against the Stouffville Spirit. The Panthers fell headlong into un- disciplined play in the second and third periods, resulting in a 6-4 loss of the OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hock- ey League at the Pickering Recreation Complex on Friday night. The loss dropped the Panthers (22- 15-2-0 for 46 points) into fifth place in the South Conference, two behind the surging Toronto Junior Canadians in fourth spot and five behind the third- place Markham Waxers. After leading 4-1 through most of the second period, with Stouffville narrow- ing the gap with a late power-play mark- er, the Panthers played short-handed for nine minutes in the second and third periods. Defenceman Kory Helowka col- lected four minutes in penalties and a misconduct, followed near the end of the second by a five-minute high-stick- ing major and misconduct assessed to defenceman Kevin Huinink. The Panthers’ penchant for penalties opened the floodgates for the Spirit as they scored three unanswered markers in the third period, including the empty netter for the victory. “Fatigue and discipline were the main factors,” says head coach Pat Curcio. “We did it to ourselves. We were without two veteran guys who we have to have on the ice.” To say the loss, and especially the lack of team discipline, was upsetting would be an understatement to Curcio, who’s preached disciplined play since taking over the coaching reins early in the sea- son. Sometimes the message is heeded; other times, like Friday’s game, it’s not. “We have to drive it into their heads every day. We can’t let it slide for a minute. As I’ve said before, when we play disciplined hockey there’s not a team that can beat us.” Ironically, Cur- cio acknowledg- es the first two periods of the Stouffville con- test were the best played periods of the season thus far by the Pan- thers. “It was one of the most frustrating losses of the year. This one was very painful. We threw away two unbeliev- able periods of hockey.” With 10 games remaining in the regular season, the Panthers have their 23-player roster set with the addition last week of Oshawa General forward Kris Belan before today’s (Wednesday) league trade deadline. Curcio is pleased to have Belan as the final piece of the roster puzzle. “He’s a fantastic individual and a tre- mendous leader. The stuff he brings to the team is priceless, something you can’t buy,” says Curcio of Belan, who was inserted into the lineup Friday, but didn’t register a point. The Panthers look forward to Friday’s game against the Toronto Junior Cana- dians at the Pickering Recreation Com- plex at 7:30 p.m. Toronto humbled the Panthers 9-3 in Toronto in the last game before the Christmas break. Curcio’s counting on his players to atone for the lacklustre loss. “Without question, we were embar- rassed before the Christmas break. I haven’t been able to forget it and I’m sure the players haven’t been able to for- get it. We want to show them on Friday that we’re a good hockey team.” Riggs leads Canada’s under-22s to title Scores twice in European Cup final, named player of game, all-star PICKERING — A Pickering hockey player was front-and-centre in helping Canada’s under-22 national women’s hockey team capture the champion- ship at the 2007 European Air Canada Cup in Germany. Ashley Riggs, a sophomore at Ni- agara University in Niagara Falls, New Yo rk, scored two goals to help the Canadians post a 6-1 victory over host Germany on Sunday in the six-team tournament that also included the na- tional teams of Finland, Russia, Swit- zerland and Japan. It was the fifth consecutive Euro- pean Air Canada Cup titles for the Canadian under-22 squad. The St. Mary Catholic Secondary School grad earned player-of-the- game honours in the gold-medal game and was also named to the tour- nament’s all-star team. Riggs played on the top line with Megan Agosta and Sarah Vaillancourt throughout the tournament and tal- lied four goals and added three as- sists. In the semifinal, the Canadians rout- ed Switzerland 11-0. Riggs chipped in with two assists. Playing in a jam-packed arena in Ravensburg, Germany for their final Group ‘B’ pool game last Friday, Can- ada defeated Germany 5-0 in front of 3,000 spectators. Riggs had an assist in the contest. In their other pool game, Canada ripped Japan 10-0. Riggs registered a two-goal effort. Riggs was also named Niagara Uni- versity’s Athlete of the Week for her ef- forts at the European Air Canada Cup. So far this season, Riggs has led the Purple Eagles with 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in 20 games. Ashley Riggs Pat Curcio Back online for another year... The Broken Chain Little did we know that night God was going to call your name, In life we loved you dearly, In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, You did not go alone, For part of us went with you, That night God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, Your love is still our guide, Although we cannot see you, You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again. Sadly missed, Lovingly remembered. Love always, Carolyne, Jenni, Anita & Rob. Also lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his parents Hermann and Ella, sister Ursula & brother-in-law Peter, nephews Kristian, Mark, & Jason, & his closest and dearest friends and family.
