Christmas in the Village takes place Sunday, Dec. 3 and 10. The museum village springs to life with the inhabitants of the houses bus- ily preparing for their holiday cel- ebrations. Visitors can see a Scottish Hog- manay, Victorian English Christ- mas celebrations, and Welsh tradi- tions. “There are carols and a Back- woods Players production of ‘A Christmas Pageant’,” said Mandy Smiles, education staff at the mu- seum. Staff and volunteers have been busy preparing the museum for the event. It is all volunteers who demon- strate the celebrations of the past in the different buildings. “The preparations are done well in advance,” Ms. Smiles said. The event is gaining in popular- ity with 250 people taking it in last year. “C hristmas is always a fun one because everyone is looking for a Christmas thing to go to,” Ms. Smiles said. “It’s nice if mother nature co-operates and we get a dusting of snow. “A lot of people come back each year. It’s a tradition.” The museum would like new people to come up and experience the Christmas traditions of days gone by. “It’s a step back in time to when Christmas was about family, not so much about gifts,” Ms. Smiles described. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, $3 for children, or $15 for a family. The Pickering Museum Village is locat- ed on the Sixth Concession Road at Greenwood Road. Preventing crime before it occurs By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer DURHAM — Durham Regional Police are investigating how to catch more youth before they be- come criminals. In an effort to prevent crime before it occurs, Durham Regional Police held a youth summit Nov. 14 to learn more about supporting those at risk of becoming crimi- nals. More than 200 people from local youth organizations partici- pated in the interagency initia- tive, which featured speakers from across the continent, including Peter Bellmio, a criminal justice management consultant. “There’s some real clear clues of which kids need help,” said Mr. Bellmio. He has helped implement community crime control strate- gies and police department patrol deployment systems across North America. During his summit address, Mr. Bellmio said many youth get ar- rested once and never again be- cause of family and community support. He added not everyone gets support from adults in their life and its important to help fill the gap for them. By the fifth time a youth has been arrested, there’s a 90 per cent chance they’ll be involved in the adult criminal sys- tem. He said it’s important to un- derstand youth and flag records of those at risk. St. Nick is parading through Ajax on Sun- day, Nov. 26. As if that isn’t enough, Santa will be sticking around to listen to children’s wishes. In fact, a whole host of activities are planned. The parade gets under way at 12:30 p.m. and it’s following the traditional route. For- mation is on Mills Road and paraders will head east on Station Street to Harwood Ave- nue, south to the Harwood Shopping Centre, turning into the plaza and dispersing at the south end. A post-parade party is being held at the To wn Hall, with activities for the whole fam- ily. Refreshments will also be available. From 1 to 3:30 p.m., there’s a chance to do arts and crafts, and decorate a gingerbread cookie (while supplies last) in the Rotary Room of the Ajax Public Library. Over the same time period, there will be face painting in the atrium of the Town Hall. At 3:30 p.m. in the Heritage Square, a tree- lighting ceremony will be held. Santa will be listening to children’s wishes in the atrium until 3:15 p.m. There will also be a mailbox for children to send letters to the North Pole. The address to send letters is Santa Claus, North Pole, HOH OHO, Canada. Children wanting a reply have to include their full address. Canada Post volunteers will be walking the parade route collecting letters. The OPP will be doing a toy drive, while the Durham Regional Police Service is doing a toy and food drive. Fun with Santa to last all afternoon in Ajax By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — Sharing the expe- rience of a city on Canada’s west coast could have an impact on a proposed food charter here in Durham Region. Dr. Wendy Mendes, a food systems planner with the City of Vancouver, gave a presentation at a food charter-visioning day in Durham on Nov. 17. “We get the opportunity to move beyond the imagined and create new realities in our cities,” Ms. Mendes said. The goal of the food charter is to articulate a common approach to food security. Having food security means all members of a community have af- fordable access to food that is nu- tritionally adequate and respects their cultural and dietary needs. It is developed by the community for a community. The food charter visioning day brought together members of Durham’s health, economic and social services communities, rep- resentatives from the agriculture industry, health and social servic- es, faith groups as well as planners and municipal representatives. Ms. Mendes gave the group a run down of her experience in Vancouver. In July of 2003, Vancouver’s council approved a motion sup- porting the development of a ‘just and sustainable food system’. A food policy task force was struck that included three city councillors, a school board trust- ee, a park board commissioner and representatives from more than 100 community groups. They started holding focus group meet- ings and did a lot of research on existing models. The result was an action plan that went forward to city council. It recommended the creation of a food policy council, an interim action plan and two new staff po- sitions to support implementa- tion. Council approved the plan in December 2003. She said the Region needs to think beyond potholes, police and parks. “Think about what cities and local authorities actually do,” Ms. Mendes said. “Cities and regions are already involved in food poli- cy and food system issues.” Food access, she said, has a proven capacity to achieve mul- tiple benefits in communities. The effects of food security not only combat hunger, but it also has social and economic benefits. The benefits of the Vancouver action plan have been far reach- ing, Ms. Mendes said. It has reinforced a number of council’s existing policy and de- velopment goals and it showcases council’s leadership. As well, it consolidated current food initia- tives and promotes civic engage- ment. An example she used as effec- tive food planning is the Olympic village being built in Vancouver, which has been conceptualized as a sustainable neighbourhood. During the planning of this 13,000- resident community thought was given to the role of urban agricul- ture, she said. “Will there be a farmer’s mar- ket? Ms. Mendes said. “How far will people have to walk to a gro- cery store?” From the experience of de- veloping a food action plan, Ms. Mendes said a great deal was learned. “It has been a lot of work, a lot of one foot in front of the other,” Ms. Mendes said. She offered these suggestions to the group: focus on multiple outcomes and focus in the first instance on those areas where the city or region has the capacity to act; build on community knowl- edge and expertise; work to en- hance existing partnerships, and align food policy goals with exist- ing city policies. The group also heard from Dr. Wayne Roberts, who currently co- ordinates the Toronto Food Policy Council. Those in attendance also worked on the charter’s first draft. The hope is that the food char- ter initiated on Friday will be completed and presented to the Region’s health and social ser- vices committee and then to Re- gional council. Jeremy Pike appeared briefly in an Os- hawa court by video link Friday morning and told a justice of the peace he needs time to sort out legal representation as his lawyer, Alex Sosna, has been appointed a judge of the Superior Court and can no longer pur- sue the case on his behalf. Mr. Pike, 34, has been in custody since his arrest in July of 2005. Durham police responding to a report of sexual assault on children searched his Bowmanville home and seized materials they say constitute child pornography. Police charged him with sexual assault and making child porn. Further examination of evidence gathered during the search led police to lay 81 addi- tional charges of sexual assault, sexual inter- ference and making child pornography. At the time of his arrest Mr. Pike was a Grade 5 teacher at Glen Street Public School in Oshawa. He was ordered held in custody after being denied bail. Mr. Pike will appear again by video Dec. 1. At another school, where no information was provided to teachers, a teacher trying a tough-love strategy was shot. Mr. Bell- mio said she didn’t know the boy had been sexually abused by his mother and was not someone with whom to try tough love. Within three years, one youth may have had 200 system contacts, he said. “You have them,” Mr. Bellmio told the crowd of youth agency and police employ- ees. By putting all those dealings with police, children’s aid, schools and other social ser- vices on the same list, a much clearer picture is painted. “I think what was done in Alberta is really the future,” said Mr. Bellmio. In 2003, the Calgary police department looked at improving its youth service by building community collaboration and has created a variety of initiatives since. “An officer will work with a multidisci- plinary team to identify young people at risk,” said Jason Cameron, the department’s youth services co-ordinator. If one person from a family is in custody, groups may check in on their siblings to see if they’re at risk. Through its Serious Habitual Offender Program, police keep an eye on youth like- ly to re-offend by following them around, checking up on them if they’re absent from school, and even driving them there. Mr. Cameron said it helps isolate youth from crime associates and reduces their chances of criminal activity. The Calgary department works with school boards as well. “All of these programs required a lot of co- operation and information sharing,” said Mr. Cameron. He added it’s a challenge to share infor- mation and abide legislation, but they try to do what’s best for youth. In Alberta, the Province’s information pri- vacy act hasn’t been challenged yet and, if it is, hopefully federal legislation surrounding youth rehabilitation will trump it, said Mr. Cameron. In some cases, waivers have been imple- mented for agency clients to sign and allow information to be shared with police. British Columbia’s Richmond RCMP also has an intervention program. Funded by the City, the program offers counselling and includes partnerships with the school board, probation officers, and provides agency referrals. Ruth Hahn, supervisor for British Colum- bia’s Richmond RCMP Restorative Justice Program, said over the last five years, 87 per cent of youth who received counselling didn’t re-offend. She added those who did, may have gotten in more trouble if they weren’t counselled. ✦ Agencies from page 1 *All used vehicles are bi-weekly payments plus taxes. $1500 down unless otherwise noted. * 2000-2002 are fi nanced over 60 months. **2003 - 72 months *** 2004 - 2005 84 months. **** 2006 are 96 months. By an overwhelming margin, the citizens of Ajax, Pickering and Oshawa have resoundingly said “Yes” to letting voters pick the person who holds the top municipal spot in Durham Region. For those keeping score, the results were 89.52 per cent in favour in Ajax, 89.24 per cent who want the option in Pickering, and 86 per cent who want the final say in Oshawa. The combined populations of the three municipalities add up to well over half the total number of people who make up Durham. Put them together and you’ve got about 334,000 people out of a total population of close to 580,000. It must be said voter turnout in all three municipalities was typically dismal on Monday with no more than 25 per cent of eligible voters casting a ballot. So, to be fair, the numbers don’t truly represent a complete picture of the complete wishes of Ajax-Pickering-Oshawa. However, the huge majority of those who did vote sent a clear message. It’s unfortunate that Whitby, Clarington, Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock citizens didn’t also have the chance to express their wishes. The key thing now is that regional councillors should care- fully assess these results and then make it clear to the Province of Ontario that it is time to change the rules and, in 2010, allow the citizens of Durham to pick the most powerful politician in Durham. Election of the regional chairperson already exists in another Greater Toronto Area regional municipality, Halton. With large growing municipalities like Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills, the voters of Halton seem perfectly capable of going to the polling booths and choosing a regional chairper- son. There is no move to make Halton a city -- certainly there would be fierce opposition by the four councils that make up the region. There is no good, sensible reason why the citizens of Dur- ham should not possess the democratic right to pick their own regional chairperson, one who would be responsible to them. The position, as it is now constituted, means the chairperson is really responsible to the group of regional councillors who vote for him when it’s time for the club of 28 to anoint their leader. Those who were asked for their opinion have made their views crystal clear: Elect the regional chairperson. Now, it’s up to the Province to make it so. Print impaired drivers’ names To the editor: Re: Nov. 1 article, ‘Driver who fled RIDE check charged with impaired’. Over this past weekend, 11 people were charged with im- paired driving, one of whom fled police. Who are they? I for one would like to know their names. It’s high time that our local newspaper started printing the names of these people and others who commit crimes, as they do in one of the Lindsay community newspapers in the section known as the court docket. Let’s stop protecting the wrong people. Voters made at least one questionable choice S ome big surprises for the public school board came out of Monday night’s election, and not all of them good. Vo ters chose five new trustees and, al- though change is always good, kicking out Oshawa Trustee Michael Barrett, the Dur- ham District School Board’s chairman, is a questionable move. Long-time incumbent Oshawa Trustee Susan Shetler was also thrown out in the cold. Trustee Shetler’s departure is a bit more understandable: she hasn’t always had broad-based support in the community (remember the controversy with the Wic- cans over the Harry Potter books). But, it’s baffling why Trustee Barrett got the boot. With only 4,970 votes, he was the fifth place finisher in the race for the three Oshawa seats. Unfortunately, the Oshawa voters’ deci- sion may have hurt all of those impacted by the Durham District School Board. Trustee Barrett assumed the chairman’s role when the board was considered dys- functional, and he helped turn it into a smoothly operating machine. His opinions were clearly respected by his colleagues and his business experience allowed him to make intelligent decisions instead of those based on emotion. In other municipalities, voters made more logical decisions. Getting rid of Paul Crawford in Pickering will eliminate a lot of confusing babble at the board table. In Scugog, Gord Baxter missed a lot of meetings and didn’t add much to board decisions. Whitby kept incumbent John Dolstra and added Christine Winters to fill Whitby councillor-elect Liz Roy’s shoes. Ms. Winters will probably be fine, but Whitby candidate Scott Templeton’s results were a surprise. He’s attended almost as many board meet- ings as trustees and would have done well. Right or wrong, one thing’s for certain, Oshawa voters have prescribed an interest- ing year for the public board. Trustee Shetler placed fourth with 5,732 votes and isn’t going down without a fight. She’s contesting the eligibility of Julia Mc- Crea, the second place finisher in Oshawa and a secondary school teacher in York Region. Trustee Shetler has to go through the courts to challenge the education act and Ms. McCrea’s interpretation of the leg- islation. But, if she’s successful, who knows what will happen. Either way it should be interesting. People are talking about Ms. McCrea. After all, can someone who’s a member of the Ontario Secondary School Te achers’ Federation be relied upon to vote in the best interests of students when teacher and student interests conflict, such as when it’s time to negotiate contracts? Hopefully, she’ll declare a conflict of in- terest on anything involving the union. Crystal Crimi’s column appears every third Sunday. Email ccrimi@durhamregion. com. Mr. Crosby, the community and family services co-ordinator, says most Salvation Army clients learn about the fund through Durham Re- gion Social Services. The fund was established by the To ronto Star in 1906, and this is the third year the Ajax-Pickering News Advertiser has been involved. “I think it’s another great one to have. Not just for ourselves, but for everyone in the community,” Mr. Crosby says. He notes posters for the fund are put up at the Salvation Army’s ser- vices centre. This year, the Salvation Army is ex- pecting to help more than 500 fami- lies. The aim for the Santa fund this year is again 1,000 gift boxes for chil- dren in Ajax and Pickering. The 2006 goal is $1.4 million, with plans to distribute 45,000 gift boxes to underprivileged children across Ajax, Pickering, Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton. All money raised is used to buy items contained in the gift boxes, which go to children up to 12 years of age. Each box has a warm sweat- er, socks, mittens, a hat, book, toy, candy and, starting this year, a tooth- brush and toothpaste for children four to 12. Babies receive two sleepers, candy for mom and dad, and a small toy. The items are all new and bought directly from manufacturers at a great cost savings. Donations can be made by VISA or MasterCard by calling the Santa Fund hotline at 416-869-4847. Dangerous of fender hearing to go ahead By Jeff Mitchell Staff Writer DURHAM — A Whitby man who gained national notoriety as a jailhouse snitch is facing a Crown application that could see him jailed indefinitely. Robert Dean May appeared in a Whitby court Thursday and was re- manded in custody after prosecutor Mitchell Flagg announced the provin- cial Attorney General has consented to a dangerous offender hearing for the man. Mr. May, 43, was found guilty earlier this year of harassing, forci- bly confining and assaulting an Ajax woman whose trust he’d gained. The Crown applied for permission to seek the dangerous offender label, which would see Mr. May jailed with- out a defined sentence, on the basis of his record for such violent offences, Mr. Flagg said. The incident in July 2005 -- Mr. May broke into the Ajax woman’s apart- ment, confined her there and as- saulted her -- is similar to two other episodes in which he harassed women with whom he’d been involved in rela- tionships. Mr. May has a record for violence stretching back more than 20 years. He gained notoriety as a jailhouse in- formant during the trials of Guy Paul Morin, accused of murdering his nine- year-old neighbour, Christine Jessop, in 1984. Mr. May and another man testified they’d heard Mr. Morin con- fess to the killing. Mr. Morin was finally cleared in 1995, and Mr. May admitted he’d lied in court. Dr. Morley Mitchell had a lasting impact on Pickering PICKERING — The Rev. Dr. Morley Mitchell recently preached his last regular sermon at Amberlea Presbyterian Church in Pickering. Rev. Dr. Morley Mitchell has been the min- ister at Amberlea since the beginning of the congregation and is now retired. He is known for his musical talents, namely singing and playing the guitar and banjo, sharing them at the church’s Christmas con- certs and Spring Sing. His proficiency on the guitar brought him to many churches to play at gatherings and social functions. He could always be found on the church’s float in the annual Pickering Santa Claus parade. Appointed to be the reverend of the church by the Presbyterian Church in Canada, when preparing for the first service more than 100 volunteers notified approximately 1,600 homes about the Presbyterian church, lo- cated in the Amberlea area of Pickering. The first service was held in the gymnasium at Dunbarton High School in late 1983, and the congregation then moved to the school’s the- atre. The congregation grew quickly and, on Nov. 6, 1983, Amberlea was recognized by the Pres- byterian Church in Canada, a congregation that had 42 charter members. With the church growing, construction of a new building was needed and started in 1986. Many volunteers helped with the building and it was completed in five months. Rev. Dr. Morley Mitchell’s wife, Barb, was a long-time teacher with the Durham District School Board. She retired from teaching in June. The church held a special open house in September to recognize the contribution and commitment that was made by Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Mitchell. Unemployed? Need assistance? NEWS ADVERTISER Recently, a parent brought me a sample essay she had written when she was in grade eight. We com- pared it to the work of her grade eight son. The differ- ence was amazing! Her essay contained no spelling or grammatical mistakes, was well organized with its ideas and they were clearly presented. Her son’s project wandered. It suffered from spell- ing, grammatical and organizational mistakes. It was interwoven with passages, which obviously he had copied from a textbook. Thrity years had passed since his mother had been in grade eight. What has hap- pened? The answer can be found not only in whole-lan- guage reading programs, which do not teach grammar, but also with programs that encourage creative spell- ing and free form writing without editing or correcting mistakes. These disastrous mistakes have produced students who do not know the difference between a noun and a verb or who cannot write or think clearly. Our teachers demanded excellence. The result of those old programs was that we learned to express ourselves through writing. I don’t want you to think that I completely endorse those old grammar class- es.Teaching writing should be an integral part in ev- ery subject and not just simply reserved for grammar class. Students should spend more time writing in his- tory, geography and science. Even math class is an opportunity for students to write! And there is a bonus! In addition to having better educated students, we would have motivated and hap- pier students who could see some relationship between what they are studying and the world they are living in. That’s the real motivation. Oxford Learning Centres help students learn to think and write more clearly so they can be happier and more successful in school. This is the first in a four-part series examining the issue of accessibility By Danielle Milley StaffWriter DURHAM — Joyce Lange is smart, attrac- tive and funny. She has a good job, does volunteer work and has a family. Ms. Lange also happens to be deaf. Druce Ayres is articulate, intelligent, and honest. He is an active volunteer, a family man and enjoys speaking his mind. Mr. Ayres uses a wheelchair to get around after suffer- ing a stroke 22 years ago. Dawn McKinson is an active person who is used to taking care of others — through her job as a personal support worker and as a mother to two children. At the beginning of June after a stroke, she had to get used to others taking care of her. These are three examples of people not only living with, but thriving with, a dis- ability. According to 2001 data collected by Statistics Canada, one in eight Canadians has a disability — that’s 12 per cent of the population — a number that is sure to rise as the population ages. For adults between 45 and 64 the dis- ability rate is nearly 17 per cent and of those Canadians 75 and older 53 per cent have some limitation in their everyday activities because of physical, psychological or health conditions. With numbers such as these, legislation such as the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 and municipal acces- sibility advisory committees are going to be vital for change, education and awareness. Ms. Lange said there have been many changes made during the past 50 years in Canada when it comes to access for people who are deaf. The Whitby resident was born hard of hearing and by the time she started school she was deaf; most of her family is also deaf so the issue of acces- sibility was one often discussed at home. She remembers at holiday gatherings the adults would sit around the table dis- cussing issues, talking about what they should have, items such as visual fire alarms, a flashing light when the doorbell went off, and access to a telephone service. This was the 1950s. “As I grew up I started to see these things come full circle and see the dreams of my family come to fruition,” she said. While at an open house to conclude Hear- ing Week at the Canadian Hearing Society’s Durham office in May, Ms. Lange recounted how her family was fortunate enough to have an early model teletype machine (TTY) that was the size of a desk and that shook the whole house when in use, but she said, “we were absolutely thrilled to have it.” There have been many devel- opments over the years that have made the world more accessible for people who are deaf, deafened and hard of hearing, including closed captioning on TV, which became common in the 1970s, and the Toronto Transit Com- mission and GO stations having lights to show when the doors are closing on trains. “So many little things are popping up when you least ex- pect it,” Ms. Lange said. She, and others, contends there are still changes to be made before Durham and On- tario are universally accessible. Changes need to be made when it comes to employment and with the building code, for example, they say. Ms. McKinson doesn’t have the history of living with a disability, but for the Pickering resi- dent the challenge comes in trying to adjust her own life after her stroke. Her disability isn’t permanent though, as two weeks after her stroke she could speak clearly and was even walking. As a personal support worker, Ms. McK- inson has seen how frustrated some people can get at not being able to take care of themselves or communicate as clearly as they used to. She didn’t think she’d need help taking care of herself at just 42 years of age. Just two weeks after her stroke, Ms. McKin- son said it is challenging. “I want to just jump up,” she said. “I’m an active person, I want to get up and move.” While Ms. McKinson thought adjusting to not being able to fully use her left side would be mentally and emotionally challenging, it hasn’t been as difficult as she an- ticipated. She attributes this to the support of her family. “It’s a bit of a challenge, you just find a new way to cope,” she said. S he knew when she headed home she’d have to have grab bars and a shower seat installed in the bathroom and she wasn’t sure how she would handle the stairs. Ms. McKinson, however, will one day be able to walk and have full mobility again. Mr. Ayres suffered a dif- ferent kind of stroke and while he may now be able to drive and do things doctors ini- tially told him he wouldn’t, his life changed forever in 1984. On Dec. 6 of that year, Mr. Ay res went to get ready for work, but instead he fell on his face. He had suffered a brain stem stoke, “which pretty much struck ev- erything from my neck down... It was a very stressful and traumatic event.” He was just 39 when he was told he wouldn’t be able to walk or drive again and that his cognitive abilities had been impaired. To day he is an active vol- unteer, serving on the Ajax Acces- sibility Advisory Committee and the GO Transit External Advisory Committee, and drives himself around in a specialized van. Mr. Ayres takes a pragmatic approach to accessibility. While he believes people with disabilities deserve the same rights as people without, when it comes to making business- es accessible he believes money is a factor, both in terms of the burden placed on the business and the ability of people to send a message by shopping or eating at places that are accessible. In his own home, Mr. Ayres and his wife had to made decisions about accessibility. They decided to stay in their two-storey Ajax home and for years he slept downstairs, but later when he was stronger he began crawl- ing up his stairs. He said installing a lift would have made it difficult for his wife and two children, who are now grown and no longer live at home, to get up the stairs. The family went through changes and a range of emotions after his stroke, but they adjusted their lives to make the best of it. “I couldn’t change this, it was an action of life... It wasn’t anybody’s fault, I got handed a bad deal,” he said. These stories represent three of the many different kinds of dis- abilities people can experience, ranging from conditions people are born with to ones they develop later on in life that can be temporary or permanent. There are several types of disabilities and functional limitations: physical, which in- cludes minor difficulties moving a part of the body, muscle weakness or paralysis of one or more parts of the body; sensory, which includes not only hearing and vision, but also speech, smell, touch, and taste; cog- nitive, which includes intellectual, mental health and learning; and other disabilities that result from accidents, illnesses or dis- eases such as diabetes, cancer, or stroke. Facing the always-tough Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Second- ary School Wildcats, the Cougars found a way to post a solid 56-47 victory in the Lake Ontario Sec- ondary School Athletics (LOSSA) ‘AAAA’ quarter-finals at Notre Dame on Wednesday afternoon. The playoff contest, however, was not without controversy. Im- mediately following the game, Wildcats’ head coach Heather LaFontaine lodged a protest with the LOSSA executive, citing in- correct seeding. According to Notre Dame head coach Rose Booker, four teams (Notre Dame, St. Mary, Dunbar- ton and Austin) finished tied for second place in the LOSSA stand- ings with similar 10-3 marks. For the eight-team quarter-finals, Notre Dame earned the four seed, while Austin was seeded fifth. Austin contends it should have been seeded higher, as the LOSSA bylaws state ties will be broken using points for and against to a maximum of 20 points, with the limit set to prevent teams from running up scores. As far as she’s concerned, Booker said she and her play- ers are proceeding under the as- sumption the Cougars are mov- ing on to the semifinals. “For us it’s a win, it’s nothing to do with us,” said Booker. But, she admitted if the LOSSA executive upholds Austin’s pro- test, the teams would be re-seed- ed, thus the entire quarter-final results would be null and void. An emergency meeting of the LOSSA executive and a decision was expected Friday, with that decision unknown at press time. Booker praised the work of Bougoulias, who was effective in not only controlling the play, but making sure to feed post players Rhea Pascal and Nicholle McK- enzie, who did masterful jobs in the paint during the crucial play- off game. “It really came down to Cath- erine B. She had her best game of the season,” acknowledged Book- er. “She controlled our offence and played just superbly. She fed the ball to Nicholle and Rhea and (Austin) couldn’t match up against (them).” McKenzie finished with a solid 23-point effort, followed by Bou- goulias with 10, Pascal with nine and Rosie Marfo with five. Rachel Tremaine led Austin with 23 points. Kate Mowat had nine and Charlotte Clarke added six. In the LOSSA junior girls’ ‘AAAA’ quarter-finals, the top- seeded Notre Dame Cougars moved on to the semis with an impressive 61-43 victory over Os- hawa’s Eastdale Eagles, the eight seed, at Notre Dame on Wednes- day afternoon. Lindsay Panchan led the Cou- gars with 24 points, followed closely by Monique Johnson with 23. Tejahn Burnett netted five and Dawndrae Charles with four. Playing Suffolk in the bronze- medal contest, the Ajacians demon- strated true teamwork in hanging a 13-0 defeat on the U.S. squad. The Knights advanced to the bronze-medal game after meeting Suffolk again in their final round-robin contest, winning by a close 6-5 score. Goaltenders Christopher Hay and Jared Hickling earned shutouts during the tournament. The Ajax peewees represented the community well in other areas of the tournament. Brandon Bockmann, Adisa Glasgow, Brian Lord and Scott Yo shikuni placed fourth in the relay, beating out 10 other teams in both minor and major peewee ages. Riley Tuset and Christopher Hay represent- ed the team in the shootout competi- tion. Aidan Parker received a $1,000 U.S. scholarship credit toward sum- mer hockey camp by winning the essay competition. Connor Jones and Riley Tuset came home with T-shirts after winning the dance competition. The remaining team members, Zachary Courtney, Ryan Givelas, Michael Klym, Michael O’Connell, Cameron Pinos, Trent Johnston, Cody Walton and Ben Wilson, provided much-needed support and cheering for the extra events. The Knights minor peewees were acknowledged for its bronze-medal win at the Ajax Attack junior ‘A’ hockey game on Saturday. Shawn Parker and Brian John- ston coach the team. In the senior division, pending the outcome of a protest by Austin, Pickering High is at Sinclair and Notre Dame is at Dunbarton. Loses to Oshawa’s Dales in final AJAX — An Ajax fighter had to settle for silver at the Ontario Open Class Boxing Champion- ships in Windsor last weekend. Eleazar ‘Chico’ Caracas of Tiller’s Boxing Club of Ajax earned his way to the 54-kilogram weight class gold-medal final against veteran Clay Dales of Oshawa’s Motor City Boxing Club. Caracas’s first-round opponent, Jeremy Yo ung, of the Fighting Alli- ance Boxing Club, pulled out of the provincial champion- ships, allowing the Ajax fighter a walk-on to the weight class final. Meanwhile, Dales had stepped out of a one-year retirement only six weeks before the champion- ships to take another run at the 54-kg title. By the end of the second round he had amassed an 18-point lead and it appeared the bout would be ended as an outclass in the third. However, the Ajax fighter mount- ed a comeback in the third, only to be denied by Dales in fourth, los- ing 38-29 on points. Chris Tiller, head coach at the Ajax club, says a slow start by his fighter was ultimately responsible for the loss. Dales will advance to nationals where he’ll represent Ontario in that weight class in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec in January. Back online for another year...
