Friday morning, the GO Transit board approved the extension of its weekend service through to Os- hawa seven days a week. “It makes all the difference in the world,” Regional Chairman Roger Anderson said. “It’s another tool we needed as part of our transportation system.” In addition to the extension of the Lakeshore East weekend train service from Pickering to Oshawa, the board also approved the construction of a new GO Transit station near the south part of the Township of Uxbridge and the northern part of the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville, on the west side of the York- Durham Boundary Road. These are improvements, according to Mr. An- derson, the Region has been fighting for four or five years. Prior to Friday’s decision, train patrons wish- ing to travel beyond Pickering on the weekend had to transfer to a bus as GO trains currently only travel from Union Station to Pickering on the weekends. “People still travel in and out of Durham on Sat- urday and Sunday,” Mr. Anderson said, “People still work on Saturday and Sunday. It’s going to be so much more convenient for them.” Mr. Anderson said the extended service will at- tract new riders traveling within Durham Region between Pickering and Oshawa, and for those who are heading west towards Toronto and beyond. “It’s important that transportation in and out of Blaisdale MONTESSORI School OPEN HOUSE Part time available 905-509-5005 www.blaisdale.com 12 months - grade 8 est. 1969 Sat. Mr. Anderson, a member of the GO Transit board, said the meeting was about two-and-a- half hours and the changes were passed unanimously. Effective Dec. 30, GO Transit weekend riders will be able to take the train from Union Sta- tion, as far east as the Oshawa GO station. The extension of the Lakeshore East weekend train service from Pickering to Osha- wa will replace the existing bus connection, no longer requiring riders to transfer at the Pickering GO station from a train to a bus, to reach Ajax, Whitby or Osha- wa. By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — The fight to stop the controversial redevel- opment of the Bay Ridges Plaza isn’t over yet. Pickering approved the devel- opment of two high rise condo towers and 126 townhouses at the Oct. 3 council meeting, but the Pickering East Shore Com- munity Association (PESCA) filed an appeal application with the Ontario Municipal Board on Nov. 6. The appeal was approved unanimously by the PESCA board. Many members of PESCA had spoken out about the density of the development and expressed concerns with traffic, among other issues, at public meetings for the devel- opment application. “We gave it a lot of consid- eration. Contrary to what the developers and our city coun- cillors say that there have been changes in respect to concerns from the community, there hasn’t been,” said Susan Carle- varis, president of PESCA. While the redevelopment plan meets the maximum den- sity laid out in the Pickering Of- ficial Plan for the Bay Ridges area, Ms. Carlevaris said they feel there are grounds for an appeal. “We don’t feel it meets some of the important princi- ples of the City’s Official Plan and the Places to Grow Act,” she said. The application appeals the City passing the rezoning bylaw and approving the rede- velopment application. It is up to the OMB to grant the appeal. Bay Ridges plan appealed to OMB New stops ‘convenient’ for Durham residents ✦ New from page 1 By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer PICKERING — Living through the Second World War is some- thing Edith Gelbard won’t forget and thanks to her visit, either will Glengrove Public School students. Against the backdrop of Re- membrance Day wreaths and a cross bearing ‘Lest we forget’, Ms. Gelbard shared with students her story of hiding for her life during the Holocaust. Her visit Nov. 10 was part of Durham West Art Cen- tre’s ‘Reading and Remembrance 2006: Holocaust and Anti-Racism Education’ and her survival, the subject of Kathy Kacer’s book, ‘Hiding Edith’. “Six million people were killed because one man decided the Jewish people were no good and should be eliminated,” said Ms. Gelbard, in her thick Austrian ac- cent. Born in 1932, Ms. Gelbard said her family lived a happy life until Adolf Hitler became dictator in Germany in 1938 and stripped away the rights of Jewish people, among others. Jewish people were forced to wear stars and one day when she was on a street car with her father, police started arresting them. Her family fled to her aunt’s house in Belgium but, in 1940, Hitler invad- ed and the arrests started again. They moved to France and things were OK for awhile. “Until one day, the police came and arrested my dad and sent him to a concentration camp,” said Ms. Gelbard. Her family split up and went into hiding. “We had to pre- tend you were somebody else, not yourself,” she continued. “For a whole year, I didn’t know where my mom was – I knew my dad was in a concentration camp and probably killed; I didn’t know where my brother was, my sister,” said Ms. Gelbard. When the war ended in 1945, her family was reunited except for her father, who survived the war in a concentration camp, but died the next day. “If Hitler was alive, what would you say to him,” asked student Farah Jahed. “It’s a very good question,” said Ms. Gelbard and added she prob- ably wouldn’t be able to approach him. “I would ask him why.” Ms. Gelbard spoke to 1,200 stu- dents throughout the week about her experiences and hopes the message they get is to not hate and discriminate. “Now that she’s told us all what she’s gone through, I hope noth- ing like that happens again,” said Mackenzie Brauer. “We should read more about it to learn more history about people who gave up their lives for peace.” “They will remember her warmth... her courage and they will remember if Edith can do it, maybe I can do it too,” said Glen- grove’s principal Wendy Holmes. She said Ms. Gelbard visit brings to life for students what’s on the written page. A thief made off with five of the 20- inch garden statues and the replica mushroom from the My School day care at Lakeridge Road and Hwy. 7 in Pickering. Lois Vice, an early childcare educa- tor, arrived early Nov. 10 and found the concrete pieces missing. All that was left was Snow White, two dwarves and a mushroom. It wasn’t immediately known which of the dwarves had been taken. Ms. Vice called Durham Regional Police Service to let them know about the disappearance. “They’re irreplaceable,” she said Fri- day morning. “A family in the area donated them to the school.” The pieces were kept out front in the garden so the children could look at them when they played outside. The Disney characters held a place in the yard for about a year without any prob- lems, until now. Ms. Vice, all the children, and the staff of the day care would like the co- lourful characters returned unharmed so they can be returned to their post in the yard to keep the children com- pany. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 12, 2006 PAGE 5 A/Pdurhamregion.com Shady character steals school’s dwarves Petition calls for clean up of coal-fired power plants DURHAM — The Region has signed on with a number of Canadian munici- palities to fight against harmful emis- sions floating over the border from the U.S. Sierra Legal filed a petition on be- half of Canadian municipalities, in- cluding Durham Region, representing a population of more than five million. The petition, formally filed with the United States Environmental Protec- tion Agency (EPA) on Nov. 1, asks the agency to reduce contaminant emis- sions from the 150 coal-fired power plants in seven midwestern states. According to Sierra Legal, the peti- tion cites evidence from international reports documenting the flow of air pollution from the U.S. into Canada. The 150 power plants identified in the petition emit 4.5 million tonnes of sul- phur dioxide and 1.6 million tonnes of nitrogen oxides annually. The plants also emit approximately the same amount of greenhouse gases as all of Canada. Coming as it does just two days after Remembrance Day, the municipal election is a timely reminder of one of the most cherished and enduring legacies of war and struggle: democracy. Unfortunately, in recent years, heading to the ballot box seems to be an option taken by fewer and fewer Canadian adults. Results indicate about 40 per cent of those 18 and older choose to skip voting during provincial and federal elections with the numbers of those forgoing this option ap- proaching 60-70 per cent during municipal voting. This is a shame. Consider all that local representatives do and you’ll quickly realize how important it is to vote. Local politicians and the decisions they make touch your life in so many ways: policing, firefighting, roads, water, sewer, waste collection, parks and recreation facilities and so many other issues are debated and decided on at local and regional council. Yo ur property taxes and user fees for municipal facilities are determined by your local and regional councillors. Many of the decisions which impact your children in school are made by trustees selected by you. And you can have a direct say in who makes those important calls. But, to do that, you must vote. It only takes a few minutes to head to your local poll and tick off your choices. Think of the great struggles to get the vote made during the 19th and 20th centuries. People gave their lives and devoted years of effort before the franchise was finally delivered, first to men, and finally, nearly a centu- ry ago, to women. And then, in the face of tyranny during the last century, our soldiers battled in far-flung places around the globe, to ensure we remained free and democratic. Let’s not take these brave sacrifices lightly or for granted. Ta ke time out of your day on Monday to head to your local poll and make your mark. It’s the last chance you’ll have for four years to have the final say on who will represent you. Don’t miss the opportunity to speak up. Use it. Holland should stay out of municipal politics To the editor: I have always believed there is no place for party politics in municipal elections. It can be argued, for example, block vot- ing by an NDP-dominated council in the City of Toronto does little to represent the interests of residents on issues of local importance. Party politics in the diverse wards of the City of Pickering would be an even bigger disaster. I was turned off by MP Mark Holland’s efforts to manipu- late the vote for Regional Council in Ward 3 Pickering (by endorsing a candidate). Mr. Holland does not even live in the ward, yet he feels important enough to direct the resi- dents of Ward 3 to vote for a former NDP adversary with no experience in local politics and no record of having attended council meetings. Is this perhaps payback for the NDP taking a dive in the last federal election? At best, Mr. Holland’s meddling insults the intelligence of the citizens of Ward 3 Pickering in their ability to make an informed choice for their local and regional representatives. My mother was reared to treat proper etiquette with the ut- most importance. You don’t wear hats after 5 p.m. or serve cucumber sandwiches after 4 p.m. My mother, in turn, raised me to at least be aware of these sometimes seem- ingly obsolete rules. But, it seems increasingly the case that not only has the art exemplified by Miss Manners herself been lost but we have taken a swing in the opposite direction. Common courtesy seems no longer to exist. With each passing day it seems rudeness is taking a tighter grip on our culture. Just the other day, as I made my way around the region, I encountered a sur- prising number of incredibly rude acts. First, a man cut in front of me and a friend in a check-out line. Why? Were you in that much of a hurry? Then I saw a woman, who, as she stepped out of her shiny new Audi, dumped a pile of plastic cups and trash on the ground. Why? Don’t you care that someone else will have to pick that up? And my personal favourite is when people switch the letters on advertising boards so they spell swear words. Why? Don’t you realize most people won’t find dirty words on a billboard the slightest bit amusing? I can’t recall the last time I went to an event and a cellphone didn’t ring during someone’s speech. Aggressive and reck- less driving, loud, public cellphone talk- ing, spitting on the sidewalk -- these are all the little things that degrade society and make it a much more unpleasant place to be. Think about how much more enjoy- able the region would be if we each took a look at the little uncouth acts we do and tried to amend them. Like turning your cell off or if you see out-of-town plates on the road, give the driver a little leeway to make a lane change. Don’t get me wrong, it is not that I have perfect etiquette. I have an incred- ibly hard time looking people in the eye when they speak to me. This, in itself, is a display of poor protocol but one that I am working on. I know that what we consider rude is often a subjective thing but you can’t argue with saying “pardon me” when the situation calls for it or holding the door open for a stranger. We owe it to each other to be consider- ate as simple courtesy goes a long way. Have a nice day. Erin Hatfield’s column ap- pears every third Sunday. E-mail ehatfield@durhamregion.com. Can’t we all make an effort to bring back manners, please Erin Hatfield staff writer EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com DURHAM — Saving money and elim- inating a potential fire hazard were two aims of an exchange sponsored by a local utility company. Ve r idian Connections offered a program of exchanging halogen floor lamps for a $30 discount off the pur- chase of an energy-saving compact fluorescent floor lamp. More than 300 halogen lamps, which use a great deal of electricity and are a possible fire hazard, were turned in for the dis- count. A halogen floor lamp can be very hot, reaching temperatures as high as 593- degrees Celsius, and that’s hot enough to ignite cloth, wood and plastic. A 300- watt tubular halogen bulb can quickly reach a temperature of 521-degrees C, which is hot enough to fry an egg in three minutes. The new compact fluorescent lamps use about 80 per cent less electricity. Ve r idian representatives are at the Ajax Home Depot this weekend col- lecting incandescent holiday light strings and giving a $5 coupon for the purchase of new, energy-saving LED holiday light strings. The new strings are 95 per cent more efficient than tra- ditional incandescent lights. Michael Angemeer, president and CEO of Veridian Corporation, says the retiring and recycling of more than 300 halogen lamps and giving away 1,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs, will save almost 185,000 kilowatts a year, enough to power 20 homes a year. Other energy-efficient tips offered by Mr. Angemeer include caulking, seal- ing and weather-stripping your home to prevent heat loss; installing a pro- grammable thermostat that will lower temperatures in your home while sleeping or not at home; using plastic window film or removable caulking on windows that you won’t be opening during the winter; keeping blinds and drapes open during the day to allow sunlight in and heat your home; clos- ing the blinds and drapes at night to reduce the chill and reduce heat loss; using area rugs on cold floors, clean- ing and replacing the air filter in the furnace every month; and lowering the thermostat down one-degree C (two- degrees Fahrenheit) can save about two per cent of the energy used by your furnace. Problems with enforc- ing an appropriate length have led some schools in Etobicoke and Mississau- ga to start phasing out the Catholic uniform kilt. St. Joseph’s in Etobicoke is re- placing them with walking shorts, starting with Grade 9 students. “I can’t speak for those other schools (in neigh- bouring boards)... We’ve been fortunate in that we don’t have those kinds of problems,” said Gloria Krampp, vice-principal at All Saints Catholic Sec- ondary School in Whitby. “I think the parents and students take great pride in their uniforms.” Paul Pulla, superin- tendent of policy for the Durham Catholic District School Board, said he’s not aware of any Durham schools planning to re- move the kilt. The board has an appro- priate dress code policy and, through it, principals have to consult with the school council and parents on what students should wear. Introduced in 2001, schools have to review it at least every three years. “I know within our Dur- ham Catholic policy across the board with regard to our kilt, I think all of our schools give the option of kilts, skorts, or slacks,” said Mr. Pulla. “Skorts are the kilts that have shorts built into them.” Ms. Krampp said All Saints’ uniforms were se- lected when the school first opened by a group of stakeholders, which in- cluded parents, teachers, students and administra- tive staff. “I have never heard a complaint from a parent about a skirt being too short,” said Ms. Krampp. “I’m not saying it never happens,” she added, of kilts worn too short. When staff spot a short kilt, they pull the student aside and ask them to roll it down, she said. At All Saints, a kilt has to be as long as a student’s arm and hand extended at their side. In Ajax, Mike Bak, prin- cipal at Notre Dame Cath- olic Secondary School, refused to comment on kilts. Cathy Mouck, princi- pal at Oshawa Monsignor John Pereyma Secondary School, said they “don’t really have an issue.” “We’re fine,” said Ms. Mouck, and referred all other questions to the board office. At St. Mary Catho- lic Secondary School in Pickering, as a whole, the school hasn’t had a prob- lem with the length of kilts, said Celine Yeung, former treasurer of its stu- dent council. “(It) only becomes a problem when girls wear it so high, there’s barely any kilt left to see,” said Ms. Yeung. “S ome of the younger girls wear their kilts way shorter than what is ap- propriate,” said Megan Cooke, a student at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School. “The older grades tend to wear pants or their kilt at a more modest length,” said Kelsey MacEachern, another student. But Danielle Ufniak rolls her kilt twice every time she wears it because “it’s too long” and “looks stu- pid.” She added that get- ting in trouble for rolling it up doesn’t make her stop. Along with rolling their kilts higher, some have permanently hemmed them. Rosie Persutti’s sister graduated from St. Mary four years ago and hemmed her kilt. “She said it was too long,” said Rosie. The students said they didn’t like the idea of phasing out the kilt and many said they would wear pants instead of the walking shorts brought in by St. Joseph’s in Etobi- coke. Currently, kilts at St. Mary can be no shorter than three inches above the knee. That replica, on display at the To ronto Aerospace Museum, now has a Durham connection thanks to 39-year-old Curtis Ed- munds, one of a team of volun- teers who helped bring the piece of Canadian aerospace history back to life. “I knew the whole story of the Arrow before I even saw the rep- lica or heard of the Toronto Aero- space Museum, so when I found out about it I was like ‘Wow, I feel like I’ve been somewhat wr itten into the Arrow legend,’” Mr. Edmunds said. Production of the Avro CF-105 Arrow was abruptly scrapped by the Canadian government in 1959 and all test models were destroyed, although no exact reason is known. Some cite pres- sure from the American govern- ment. However, over the course of the past seven years, a team of volunteers dedicated to restoring the Arrow spent two days a week rebuilding the aircraft. In Oc- tober, the r eplica fi- n ally went on public display at the museum, located at the site of the former CFB Downsview. Mr. Edmunds, an Oshawa resi- dent, worked full-time on the Arrow for about four months after stumbling upon the project earlier this year. He estimated the value of the replica at $1.4 million. “I was upset that I hadn’t heard about it earlier because I would have liked to have been there from Day One,” said Mr. Edmunds who says he riveted about 60 per cent of the aircraft’s wings. “When it all came togeth- er, it was pretty breath-taking.” At the start of the Cold War, the Canadian government want- ed a plane that could fly over the North Pole and intercept Russian bombers before they reached North America. When it was complete, the Arrow, all Canadian built and designed, was “30 years ahead of its time,” Mr. Edmunds said. But in early 1959, Prime Minis- ter John Diefenbaker announced an immediate cancellation of the supersonic aircraft. Decades later, a team dedi- cated to bringing the Arrow back to life came together to build a replica at the Toronto Aerospace Museum. “The whole idea of the mu- seum is to celebrate Canadian aviation... and what greater story in Canadian aviation than the Av ro Arrow?” Mr. Edmunds said. “It’s the centrepiece of the mu- seum and it was undertaken to show people what we could have done. Had the Arrow not been scrapped by the Diefenbaker government, the Canadian aero- space industry could have been 10 times what it is now. We could have been world leaders.” James C. Floyd, 92, the Arrow’s original designer was also on hand at the unveiling to view the replica, Mr. Edmunds said. “We had him out and he was just shaking our hands and hug- ging us; he could believe what we’d done,” he said. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 12, 2006 PAGE 9 Pdurhamregion.com Rebirth of the famed Avro Arrow Curtis Edmunds By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — For years the East Cross Forest has been used and abused. Trespassing, particularly by motor- ized vehicles, environmental degrada- tion, and the dumping of waste have been major problems in the wooded area located in the southeast corner of Scugog. According to Scugog Regional Councillor Jim McMillen, on Oct. 28, 2002, Scugog Council established the Te st Hill Task Force. “We wanted to get rid of some of the illegal activities,” Coun. McMillen said. “We never imagined we would get to this point, setting up a conser- vation area.” But, that is what ended up hap- pening. A major step in turning this problem area into conservation lands was taken on Oct. 20 when, in a grand display of generosity, Erast Huculak donated 552-acres of land located in the East Cross Forest to Kawartha Conservation. It was with hopes that the sight becomes an important part of Dur- ham Region, Mr. Huculak said as he handed the land over. “I feel that I am happy I did this,” Mr. Huculak said. “I didn’t realize how important it is, but it is important for future generations.” Mr. Huculak said his wife, Yarmila, told him how she always appreciated childhood trips to conservation areas. It was there she learned about nature and trees. This sentiment sparked the gift. “Canada has been good to me, On- tario has been good to me,” Mr. Hucu- lak said. “So I wanted to make a gift to this country.” Mr. Huculak is the honorary Consul of Ukraine in Canada and the presi- dent and chairman of Medical Phar- macies Group Inc., the largest provid- er of pharmacy services to long-term care facilities in Canada. The company was founded in 1957 when he opened his first store in Oshawa. Mr. Huculak lives in Eto- bicoke and his company is based in Pickering. The donated lands are located en- tirely within the environmentally sen- sitive Oak Ridges Moraine. Kawar- tha Conservation is working with the To w nship of Scugog and several in- terest groups to secure and manage lands in the East Cross Forest for the benefit and protection of the area. “This 550-acre parcel of land is ex- pected to be the centerpiece of the future East Cross Forest Conservation Area,” Regional Chairman Roger An- derson said. “Mr. Huculak’s vision and contribu- tion will lead the way in transforming this area from one of environmental degradation to one of natural heritage restoration and protection for years to come.” Master of ceremonies Ian Macnab said the gift will result in this portion of the Oak Ridges Moraine being for- ever protected. “His superlative donation is the cornerstone of the vision that is East Cross Forest,” Mr. Macnab said. Kawartha Conservation is currently in the process of creating a manage- ment plan for the new property, called the East Cross Forest Conservation Area, and it is anticipated it will open in 2009. The constant pressure associated with living in a fast-paced world has created an environment where al- most everyone is suffering to some degree from excessive stress. The effects on our health, productivity and qual- ity of life are devastating--more devastating than people have realized. Some common early signs of stress in- clude; irritability, headaches, digestive problems, pain in neck and shoulders, dizziness and raised blood pressure. With prolonged or regular overstress, these can lead to or develop into conditions that are more serious. Because the mind and body deeply affect each other, too much stress also affects us mentally and emotionally. Some of the emotional and behavioural changes we can experience include a change in the way we relate to other people. For example, people can become more depressed, withdrawn, and not able to listen to others or be less sen- sitive towards others. Emotions like anxiety, anger, and frustration can become heightened. Many people have simply adapted to stress in an unhealthy way, resigned to thinking it’s “just the way it is.” However, adapting to stress and unmanaged stress have cre- ated a pandemic of low-grade anxiety and de- pression as well as the physical symptoms men- tioned previ- ously. Managing your stress so that it doesn’t nega- tively affect your health can be learned through a program called Mindfulness- Based Stress Re- duction (MBSR) originally developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. at UMass Medical Center. This program is designed for people who want to mobilize their own inner resources of mind and body and take charge of their health and lives. Anne Dranitsaris. Ph.D. is a clinical psychotherapist in private practice in Ajax. She works with individuals and groups using Mindfulness-Based approaches for treatment of stress-related problems, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. For more information about upcoming MBSR programs, contact the Centre for Mindful Therapies at 905.428.1404 or visit www. mindfultherapies. com. Are You Stressed? The MBSR program is tailored for people experiencing the negative physical and emotional effects of excessive stress. The 8-week MBSR program helps people identify stressors in their lives, modify behaviour to interrupt stress-producing cycles, and meet life situations with increased awareness and options for action. Come to our Free Introductory Seminar and learn how you can deal more effectively with stress. The Centre for Mindful Therapies offers Psychotherapy, Mindfulness- Based Stress Reduction, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Hypnotherapy, Relationship and Couples Therapy, and other body/mind treatments. Ajax educator tries to inspire Notre Dame phys. ed teacher Nick Kolodzie competes at world triathlon championships By Brian McNair Staff Editor DURHAM — Nick Kolodzie does more than walk the walk. He also runs the run, swims the swim and bikes the bike ride. And, he hopes his students at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Ajax are taking notice. Kolodzie, an Oshawa resident and phys-ed teacher at Notre Dame, has an inspirational tale he hopes his students are paying attention to. The basic message is this: never give up on a dream. Despite being what he calls a “slightly above average” cross- country runner while in high school, Kolodzie, at 33, has de- veloped his skills to such an extent that he competed at the International Triathlon Union World Championships in Laus- anne, Switzerland recently. And he fared quite well, to boot. Competing in the 30-34 age group, Kolodzie finished 57th out of 139 competitors worldwide, and third among Canadians after being the eighth quickest from this country during a national qualifier in July. “It was quite an experience, I was absolutely ecstatic to qualify for the worlds,” says Kolodzie, who is the son of Oshawa coun- cillor Joe Kolodzie. “I want to do this every year I can and I want to get better, too. This year was all about being there.” Kolodzie has been a long-dis- tance runner since the age of 14, but took up triathlon seriously three years ago when he bought a $3,500 bike, about a year after an energizing cycling trip through the Rocky Mountains. At 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, a relatively big size for a long- distance runner, he found add- ing the swimming and cycling elements to his training regimen to be easier on his body than in- creasing the length of his runs. As he prepared for the world championships this summer, he trained about two hours per day, six days a week and concentrat- ed on improving his swimming technique. It paid off, as he had a personal best time of 21:59 in the 1.5-kilo- metre swim in Switzerland, to go along with a 1:09:02 clocking in the 40K bike ride and 40:52 time in the 10K run. All told, his 2:22:33 finish was comparable to his personal best of two hours and nine minutes, considering he spent 13 minutes in transition between the race elements. Kolodzie credits Notre Dame principal Mike Bak for allowing him to miss the first two days of school while competing in Swit- zerland. But he hopes he is making it worthwhile by serving as a role model to his students, who often see him cycle to work and run alongside them as their cross- country coach. He’s also trying to convince his father, who’s 67, to give triathlon a try. After all, pops made the trip all the way to Switzerland to cheer him on. “I’m trying to convince him to do it,” says the younger Kolodzie. “They had 70- and 75-year-olds competing in Switzerland. In 40 years, I’d like to be doing that too. That’s pretty remarkable.” As someone who has travelled to Korea and Austria to teach, Kolodzie hopes to continue qual- ifying for the annual world cham- pionships, both to stay competi- tive and to see the world. “It’s a lifestyle that I absolutely love,” he says. “It’s the right bal- ance between training hard and still enjoying it, even though it hurts.” A.J. Groen /News Advertiser photo Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School phys. ed teacher Nick Kolodzie recently competed at the World Triathlon Championships in Lausanne, Swit- zerland, where he was the third quickest Canadian in his age group. However, the ovation the athletes received upon marching through the doors and into the gymnasium was more than enough to warm things up. Durham Region, along with the college and university, has been named as the host site for the Special Olympics Ontario Spring Games in May 2008. The campus will serve as the Olympic village of sorts, not only housing the more than 900 athletes, trainers and coaches expected to participate, but also playing host to a couple of events. Some of the events on tap for these spring games will include basketball and power lifting, both of which will be played on campus, in addition to five-pin bowling, 10-pin bowling, floor hockey and swim- ming. Glenn McDonell, president and chief operating office of Special Olympics Ontario, was on hand We dnesday, and is looking forward to making these games the best On- tario has ever seen. “We are all looking forward to putting everything we can into this and making sure it is the very best and most memorable games On- tario has seen,” he said. The Pumas hope to take a step in that direction on Tuesday when the Pickering school will serve as one of the host sites for the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athlet- ics (LOSSA) ‘AAAA’ quarter-final and semifinal playdowns. Pine Ridge head coach Andrew Lue says expectations for the Pumas are high, after a solid LOSSA regular season which saw the squad finish atop the LOSSA West Division with a sterling 9-1 record. Their lone loss was against the Henry Street High School Hawks of Whitby. “We’re definitely a team that can win it this year. It’s whether the guys show up in the playoffs. Any one of the top four or five teams could take it this year and we’ve beaten all of those teams,” says Lue. Lue notes the Pumas are a mix of first- and second-year senior play- ers and are strong at all aspects of the game. “We’re a well-balanced team this year. There was discussion over splitting health and so- cial services into two com- mittees but recently council passed a motion to leave the health and social services committee alone. The issue of splitting the committee into two came up after council asked the clerk’s office to report back on a five-committee struc- ture. If health and social ser- vices had been divided there would have been a structure of five standing commit- tees comprised from the 28 members of Regional coun- cil. “I haven’t found the work- load onerous,” said Ajax Councillor Colleen Jordan, a current member of health and social services. “I do have concerns in that many of the social ser- vices and health issues do tend to overlap.” Whitby Councillor and committee chairwoman Pat Perkins said it was when the committees were split in previous years that the system didn’t work well. “Everything is being dealt with more efficiently now and it is working,” she said. Historically, the health and social services commit- tee was one unit until 1997 when the meetings were split. This meant each commit- tee was meeting on a six- week cycle. Last year Coun. Perkins said she requested permis- sion to put the meetings back together so everything would be dealt with on a three-week cycle. “We weren’t dealing with things as often as we should,” Coun. Perkins said. Since the committee was consolidated again she said it has been working well. Po st-election committees will st ay the same CANADA’S ONLY FURNITURE SUPERSTORES *O.A.C.
