in lurch, worker has
to adjust schedule
By Erin Hatfield
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Now entering its
third week, a strike by Durham
Region Transit (DRT) workers is
impacting more than just man-
agement and staff.
Across the Region, DRT cus-
tomers are having to find alter-
nate means to get on with their
day, and in some cases they aren’t
able to get around at all.
Pickering resident Ken Devine
said DRT is one of his main modes
of transportation.
“I use it to get to and from
work,” Mr. Devine said.
But, since the strike started, he
said he has had no choice but to
only take weekend shifts at his
part-time job so he can use his
girlfriend’s car to get there.
“Work has been very accom-
modating,” he said.
During the week, however, Mr.
Devine isn’t able to get to doc-
tor’s appointments or to see his
daughter in north Whitby.
“(The strike) does limit you in
what you can do and what you
can’t do,” Mr. Devine said.
Hazel Stork, a senior living in
Pickering, said she has felt the ef-
fects of the strike as well.
“I have no way of getting about,”
Ms. Stork said.
“It has been hard with this tran-
sit strike.”
She has missed an appoint-
ment with a specialist because a
cost estimate for the trip from a
taxi company was between $50
and $60.
She then called DRT special-
ized service to see if they could
help her.
“The man who I called said,
‘Sorry we are on strike, we cannot
help you’,” Ms. Stork said.
Unable to get groceries or do
errands, Ms. Stork is also unable
to babysit her granddaughters as
she normally does.
She said she worries about
what she will do if the strike con-
tinues much longer.
Joanne and Joe Pearson both
use wheelchairs.

PICKERING — The University of
To ronto might soon be setting up
shop on Frenchman’s Bay.
The Department of Physical and
Environmental Sciences at the U of
T Scarborough campus is interested
in using part of a house on the west-
ern spit as a base for environmental
research and public education.
“This particular location would
give us a site that is very different
(from our campus),” said Donald
Cormack, chairman of the depart-
ment of the house on Beachpoint
Promenade.
In a letter to Ward 1 Regional
Councillor Maurice Brenner at the
beginning of the month, Mr. Cor-
mack said the facility they have in
mind would support interdisciplin-
ary field research of the faculty, as
well as graduate and undergradu-
ate students. It would also provide
the opportunity for school groups to
come and learn.
“Public education, in my mind,
is an important element of this,” he
said.
Coun. Brenner said the Water-
front Co-ordinating Committee, of
which he is the chairman, is inter-
ested in an environmental learning
centre.
“I was ecstatic,” he said of receiv-
ing the letter. “It was something that
we’ve talked about for a long time.
To have the potential to have a pro-
gram of that magnitude in the City
of Pickering speaks volumes.”

DURHAM — As one of
the fastest growing com-
munities in North America,
Durham Region must work
hard to keep cars and trucks
moving in and out of the re-
gion, members of the Ajax-
Pickering Board of Trade
heard Monday.
“Transportation must be at
the table, not tomorrow but
today,” Transportation Min-
ister Donna Cansfield said at
a luncheon.
“All of you who have been
doing the planning over the
past number of years are
well aware of the challenges
that are faced in the Durham
Region,” said Ms. Cansfield,
who was at the Hilton Gar-
den Inn in Ajax, she said, to
talk about some of the initia-
tives in transportation.
“We have already started
planning on the Seaton lands
and environmental assess-
ments are under way for the
(Hwy.) 7 and (Hwy.) 407.,”
Ms. Cansfield said. ”
The ministry is working to-
wards the widening of Hwy.
407 between Brock Road and
Brooklin, a project,
she admits, that has
seen it’s challenges.
But, she committed
to looking into ways
to reduce the environ-
mental assessment
(EA) time frame.
“My position is that if I can
help you remove the barriers
then it is my job to do so and
I am quite prepared to work
and support and push for
those,” Ms. Cansfield said.
However, she rebut-
ted claims Durham Region
doesn’t get it’s fair share of
provincial funding.
“Durham is getting their
fair share, it is based on the
need, it is based on the status
of the roads and or bridges,”
Ms. Cansfield said. “There is
a good amount of work going
on.”
She said there has been
$165 million
spent on Dur-
ham highways
in recent years,
including $61
million to widen
Hwy. 401 from
Harwood Avenue to Salem
Road, and $11 million to re-
pave a portion of Hwy. 35.
Earlier this year, Durham
municipalities received a
total of $22.4 million under
the Move Ontario program to
use on roads and bridges of
their choosing and $7 million
in provincial gas tax funding.
“O ntario has not received
what we consider our fair
share of infrastructure fund-
ing from the federal govern-
ment,” Ms. Cansfield said.
“Ontario has been short
changed by $1.2 billion since
2001.”
Regional Chairman Roger
Anderson said he didn’t hear
anything that indicated any
actual improvements in the
near future.
“I appreciate the minister’s
interest in Durham Region,”
Mr. Anderson said. “But what
we need is the minister’s in-
fluence in speeding up the
EA process, moving forward
on the Hwy. 407 and Hwy. 7
far faster than it has been.”
By the sounds of what he
heard, he said an EA won’t be
filed until 2008.
“So there likely won’t even
be a decision on 2009,” Mr.
Anderson said. “We are look-
ing a long way out and that is
not acceptable.”
He said the same goes for
Hwy. 7.
“We had an agreement
with the Province,” Mr. An-
derson said. “That should
have been done a long time
ago.”
He said it’s good that the
minister understands the is-
sues, like the influence Seaton
will have on infrastructure.

The Whitby residents have
bus service within the town

are contracted out, but the
couple still feels the effects
of the DRT strike.
The couple routinely
uses DRT’s specialized ser-

months, they are able to
take advantage of the regu-

Since the beginning of
the transit strike on Oct.
5 the Pearsons have had
trouble doing their errands

“It is hard for us to get

She wants to get started

does at the Oshawa Cen-

isn’t able to get there.
Mr. Pearson’s doctor is
in Brooklin, but without
buses he can’t make it to
the office.
The couple has placed
phone calls to councillors
and the mayor of Whitby,
whose staff directed them
to specialized services.
Staff at specialized services
told the Pearsons if they
need to get to doctor’s ap-
pointments they could take
a cab and bill the Region,
but not for other errands.
“It is not fair to have to
depend on our family to
get around,” Ms. Pearson
said.

Duffin Heights neighbourhood is an approved development area in the City of Pickering. This area is centrally
located on both sides of Brock Road between Rossland Road and Taunton Road, bounded to the north by the
C.P. Rail, to the east by the municipal boundary with the Town of Ajax, to the south by the hydro transmission
tower line, and to the west by the West Duffin Creek, as shown below. The development area is mainly
comprised of tablelands on both sides of Brock Road and between watercourse valleys.
This development area is located north of the existing residential area. The City of Pickering Official Plan
identifies this area as Duffin Heights Neighbourhood 15. The Region Municipality of Durham is undertaking a
Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) study for the provision of regional water supply and
sanitary sewerage services in support of land development within the Duffin Heights neighbourhood.

The existing Rosebank Sanitary Sewage Pumping Station (SPS), located at 563 Rodd Avenue in the City of Pickering,
requires upgrades to provide additional sanitary sewage pumping capacity for increased sewage fl ows from development
within the Rosebank neighbourhood, in accordance with the Regional and Pickering Offi cial Plans.
Due to the proposed increase in sewage pumping capacity, the existing forcemain conveying sewage fl ow from the SPS
to the existing gravity sewer on Park Crescent, crossing Petticoat Creek and Petticoat Creek Conversation Area on an
existing easement, may need to be upgraded. A new forcemain of larger size, or twin forcemain, is being considered.
A Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) is being conducted to identify the need for an upgrade to the
SPS, as well as determining possible alternative locations for the SPS. A number of alternatives are being evaluated. The
preferred alternative for the SPS location, as well as the forcemain location if required, will be chosen. The community’s
input is important to the overall analysis and fi nal recommendation.
In order to provide an opportunity for discussion, a Public Information Centre is planned to:
• Provide the need and justifi cation of the project
• Present background information
• Present the alternatives, evaluation and the preferred solution
• Obtain public input
Representatives of the Regional Municipality of Durham and the consultant, R.V. Anderson Associates Limited, will be
present, to describe the work plan and address any questions. The Public Information Centre will be held at:
Place: Petticoat Creek Community Centre – Franklin Room
470 Kingston Road West, Pickering
Date: November 23, 2006, Thursday
Time: 4 to 9 p.m.
Following the Public Information Centre, the consultant will proceed with a fi nal evaluation of all alternatives, giving
consideration to comments received from the public and interested agencies, and will make a recommendation on the
preferred location of the pumping station, as well as the preferred alignment of the forcemain.
Yo ur input to our planning process is important.
To make your comments known to the project team, please attend the Public Information Centre. If you are unable to
attend, and cannot send a representative, please request the information handout from either of the contacts listed below,
and provide your comments to the attention of Mr. Don Kemp, P.Eng. of R.V. Anderson Associates Limited.

Dear Readers: Sometimes in my
readings, I come across small, yet inter-
esting tidbits of information that I know
will keep your feet pain free. Anticipat-
ing problems before they occur is the
best way to maintain trouble free feet,
for there is no truer statement than the
one that says, “when your feet hurt, you
hurt all over”.
Suffering from ATHLETES FEET?
When getting dressed in the morning,
make sure you put your socks on fi rst,
before your underwear. This will mini-
mize the chance of spreading the infec-
tion to the groin and causing jock itch.
When BUYING NEW SHOES,
make sure you do so in the later part of
the day to ensure a proper fi t. Feet may
swell as the day goes on, so that a shoe
bought in the morning may feel snug as
the day progresses.
Greater attention should be paid to
feet in the WINTER with respect to dry
skin and the use of moisturizer creams.
This is because the winter’s air is less
humid than summer’s. Women are also
more apt to wear nylons in the winter.
JOGGERS
should always re-
member that the
pitch of a road is
always higher in
the centre and low-
er at the curbs (for
drainage purposes).
This will affect the
functional length of
the legs of a person
jogging, whereby
the curb leg is
forced to be the
longer leg. Change
the side of the road
you are jogging on
halfway through
your run, in the
same way you
would change the
direction of your
run when jogging
on a banked track.
DIABETICS
should always take
the time to dry their
feet well especially
between the toes
and should cream
their feet regularly
but NEVER be-
tween the toes.
HEAT should
never be applied to
an injured area un-
til the swelling has
subsided. Heat will
cause blood vessels
to dilate, increasing
blood fl ow to the
area, causing more
swelling and possi-
ble tissue damage.
During a kilometer of running your
foot will strike the ground between 500
and 750 times with a force of up to four
times your body weight. The force de-
pends on the length of your stride and
your body weight.
The human body is made up pf 70
per cent water and its need for water
increases tremendously with exertion.
This is because fl uids are lost not only
through perspiration, but also by in-
creased breathing. FLUID REPLAC-
MENT should occur before, during and
after the activity.
FACT OR MYTH: Corns have roots.
This is a MYTH. A corn is a build up of
dead skin against a boney prominence
because of shoe pressure. They will re-
cur even after being paired down.
FACT OR MYTH: No pain no gain.
This is a MYTH as pain is a signal sent
out by your body to slow down or pay
attention to a specifi c part of the body.
Continuing the activity will only worsen
the problem, taking longer to recover.
FACT OR MYTH: Gout is a rich
man’s disease. This is a MYTH as gout
can occur in
anyone who
has suffered
diffi culty me-

uric acid. At
one time it
was thought
to occur in
people whose
diets included
red meats and
alcohol.
FA CT OR
MYTH: An
adult foot will never increase in size.
This is a MYTH as feet can lengthen
at least one shoe size when the longi-
tudinal arch collapses. This is seen in
people as they age, gain weight or in
women during pregnancy.

(NC)— It’s surprising that something as simple and
delicious as a mushroom is also benefi cial to your good
health. Mushrooms are cholesterol-free, low in calories, fat
and carbohydrates and contain no trans fats. Mushrooms
also contain an extensive list of essential vitamins and min-
erals such as ribofl avin, thiamin, niacin, folate, vitamin D
and selenium. Most Canadians are unaware of the dietetic
benefi ts of Canadian mushrooms.
Tw o important nutrients in mushrooms are vitamin D
and selenium. Health professionals tell us we don’t get
enough vitamin D in our diets and mushrooms are a great
source of vitamin D. Vitamin D is the most prominent vita-
min found in mushrooms. Vitamin D assists in the absorp-
tion of dietary calcium, and plays an important role in the
prevention of osteoporosis.
Another important nutrient is selenium. Selenium is
an essential mineral that works with vitamin E to produce
antioxidants that help to prevent cell damage from free
radicals. Free radicals are natural by-products of oxygen
metabolism. It is these free radicals that can cause chronic
diseases such as cancer and heart disease. One serving of
mushrooms provides about 10% of the recommended daily
value for selenium.
Mushrooms play a large part in weight control because
mushrooms have no trans fat, contain no cholesterol and
are low in carbohydrates. They are sim-
ple to prepare and good to eat. Mush-
rooms add essential nutrients to any
meal without adding calories.
Overall, mushrooms not only taste
great, but also help main-
tain healthy bodies. Another
reason to incorporate fresh
mushrooms into your dinner.
Start with either of these
recipes below for a
great mushroom
dinner tonight,
tomorrow and
beyond.

Durham College open house next week a chance
for potential students to learn about programs
Two days offered; more than
1,000 students expected
DURHAM — Students with post-secondary
school on their mind can see what Durham Col-
lege has to offer during its fall open house.
More than 1,000 potential students are set to
visit at the open house.
It is Thursday Oct. 26 from 6 to 9 p.m., and
Friday Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Oshawa
campus, 2000 Simcoe St. N. in Oshawa.
Those attending will get the opportunity to tour
the campus and learn about the programs and
courses offered, as well as the support services
available on campus, such as how to best make
the transition from high school to post-secondary
education and manage a budget.
They’ll also learn about opportunities available
through the college’s student association and stu-
dent life office, and more.
Participants can enter the campus from Simcoe
Street North and proceed to the Founders 3 park-
ing lot.
RE YOU BEING SERVED?A Part 4 of 4: Websites
DURHAM REGION
This site is very linear with logos and artwork providing an
easy map of the site. The main two columns are heavy on text,
light on graphics, which would make it easy for rural residents
to load the page. The site offers up lots of information and press
releases are prominent which provides transparency and allows
the public to know what the municipality is up to. A career
opportunities link is helpful. One complaint is that e-mail veri-
fication is vague and then you have to scroll down to discover
that your message was sent; there is no indication to scroll down
for more information. About Durham provides comprehensive
information -- it’s like Civics 101. Any services the Region pro-
vides are listed and easy to find. For the most part, it’s two clicks
and you have your answer.
OSHAWA
The webmaster earns kudos for keeping everything to one
screen, even on a laptop. There’s nothing more annoying than
having to scroll down to see the information you’re seeking.
This sharp-looking home page has lots of links and a scrolling
list of topical headlines and news items. One strike is the fact the
title of Durham MPP John O’Toole is incorrect on the website,
but to be fair, his riding’s name was changed not that long ago.
All the sites have directories, but Oshawa’s is outstanding and
offers up hundreds of frequently used phone numbers in Osha-
wa and beyond. The FAQ about bylaws, rules, etcetera is very
good. The questions and answers portion spells out everything
in simple terms. The first thing we learn about is how to deal
with messy neighbours. You must clear your own sidewalks
or else pay the piper when the City does it for you. It’s
on the website, so you’re forewarned.
CLARINGTON
At first blush there is a whack of informa-
tion in the first page and a half on the
Clarington site. The columnar layout is
easy to navigate and gives the home
a crisp, clean look. It’s very inviting
to the user and loads quickly,
which is even more important.
Users are blessed by the
“most requested pages”
section which takes
them on a quick tour
of the site. We loved
the council page
with its pictures,
biographies and
e-mail links to the
elected officials.
The only issue
is the fact there
are a number of
pages featuring
these people.
For those of
you who work
away on a
computer and
don’t like to
surf a bunch of
different sites,
Clarington lends
a hand with its link
to Clarington weather
from the Weather Network
website. There’s even a clock
on the pages. Phone numbers
are featured down the left menu of
the help and support pages. This simple
feature goes a long way to answering cus-
tomer service needs. There are loads of links,
including construction, headlines with vital infor-
mation including how seniors can get help with sidewalk
clearing. It’s hard to find fault with this site.
PICKERING
This very slick, home page earns the thumbs-up for fitting on
one laptop screen. The layout is very clean and there’s not a lot
of wasted area. The homepage loads quickly with no broken
links, although in the left menu some of the pop-ups overlap
other links when rolled over. This flaw makes it difficult to make
some of the links work on the first click. The stylish icons take
you to six information portals. The best is the kids page which is
found through the lifestyle section. This impressive area has lots
of neat innovation. It can be slow, but the kids section is one of
a kind when it comes to municipal websites. It’s easy to imagine
this site being referenced for homework assignments.
The rolladex of local businesses is extremely helpful given the
size of Pickering. The council page offers up contacts with pic-
tures of the motley crew and e-mail addresses. It’s a nice touch.
Unlike some municipal websites, the home page is always one
click away. You never have to worry about ending up on a page
and not having the chance to get back to home page.
BROCK
There is
nothing flashy
about the Brock web-
site. This ‘plain Jane’ site is
easy to navigate with its folder hierar-
chy. This site is designed for the simplistic, throw-
back PC user. As plain as it is, it is effective and useful. The site
is exceedingly informative and spells out quite clearly what ser-
vices are available to residents. It’s a surprisingly fast site which
should satisfy the needs of this rural community.
SCUGOG
The home page is heavy on text but has a useful menu of
quick links down the left side. Most importantly, the text ele-
ments make it easier to load the pages. This is a must where
many residents still have dial-up access to the Internet. The
“how can we help” pages offer service information on the home
page. If you send a question to the site administrator, you are
informed your message has been sent at the top of the page.
There’s no guesswork here. There is an impressive list of site links
and it is augmented by a good rolladex of phone numbers and
contact information. The FAQ of nine links on the home page
leaves little to be desired.
UXBRIDGE
This website is old school. It’s not bad if you want a simple
easily opened web page. It likely has something to do with dial-
up access. Regardless, the site lacks a polished look as compared
to other municipalities. There are eight buttons with links to
all services offered by the Township. It can be time-consuming
finding what you want but with a little perseverance you can
get it. The list of municipal election candidates
doesn’t say how many will be elected for
each position. Assume only one for
each ward, but the site doesn’t tell
you definitively. When booking
facilities everyone in town
must still want to use
the phone, rather than
e-mail. Despite its
shortcomings this
site does a good
job of providing
all the necessary
information to
its residents.
AJAX
For those
users who want
to visit a pretty
site, Ajax is the
place. The home
page features a
large image show-
ing one aspect of
Ajax. The home page
has about a dozen links
in various forms, but
each is easy to understand
and leads to useful informa-
tion. Even with a large image
dominating the top third
of the homepage, it loads
quickly.
One click gets you to
the information pages where
you’ll find lots of links about
To w nship services. A little house-
keeping might be in order as the only
jobs posting on the careers page closed
over a month ago. There is useful informa-
tion about Ajax for prospective businesses and
residents coming to town. The statistical analysis
of Ajax paints a rosy picture and is an enhancement
that makes the website stand out.
WHITBY
Well, in a word, wow. This is the best way to describe the Town
of Whitby website. If you want to find any information about
Whitby, it appears to be all there, and best of all, on the home
page. The portal into Whitby is chock full of useful links which
take you where you want quickly.
The pages load fast and aren’t cluttered with useless graphics.
Nothing here is for show, everything is about customer service.
Whitby wins for its cool factor.
Who wouldn’t love its GPS type tool which allows people to
find out what’s available for purchase, lease or rent in Whitby?
Wa nt to find a commercial property with 1,299 square feet for
rent, you’ll find out in about 10 seconds in what Whitby has to
offer. This is by far the best innovation on any local municipal
website.
This site is very fun to browse and you could spend hours
zooming around looking for information.
Are You Being Served is a four-part series looking at municipal ser-
vice from the first-person perspective. We sent anonymous journalists
to get a taxpayer’s view of service at municipal
departments, recycling at municipal
facilities, energy conservation
and municipal web
sites.

R ibbons, wristbands a reminder to speak up, prevent child abuse
Purple Ribbon campaign in
full swing across Durham
By Jillian Follert
Staff Writer
DURHAM — People across Ontario are
donning purple ribbons and wristbands
this month, as a quiet reminder that it is
everyone’s responsibility to help prevent
child abuse.
Many don’t know the symbol started here
in Durham.
In 1992, Sue Sims, volunteer co-ordina-
tor with the Durham Children’s Aid Society
(DCAS), decided to come up with a symbol
to promote Child Abuse Prevention Month,
observed every year in October.
At the time, ribbons were becoming pop-
ular and she settled on a bright purple,
hoping it would catch on. DCAS started
using the symbol that same year and not
long after, it was adopted by Children’s Aid
Societies across Ontario.
This October, 44 Children’s Aid Societies
across the province are participating in the
purple ribbon campaign and the Use Your
Vo ice campaign, which encourages people
to be a voice for children who are unable to
speak up, by reporting abuse or suspected
abuse.
The DCAS conducted 3,901 investiga-
tions into suspected abuse and neglect last
year, or about 75 calls per week -- a statistic
Executive Director Jim Dubray calls “ap-
palling.”
The local agency has seen a steady three
to four per cent increase in calls over the
past several years, attributed in part to a
growing local population and legislative
changes requiring professionals to report
suspected abuse.
DCAS relies on the community to be its
eyes and ears, but there is still a stigma
when it comes to reporting abuse.
“These may be friends, relatives or neigh-
bours, so people may be very uncomfort-
able calling CAS,” Mr. Dubray said. “But
they have to think about how scared that
child might be or what might happen if they
don’t report it.”
A recent study commissioned by the On-
tario Association of Children’s Aid Societies
(OACAS) reveals 87 per cent of Ontarians
know they have a duty to report actual
or suspected abuse. However, many don’t
citing barriers like fear of retribution, con-
fusion as to what constitutes abuse or the
belief that it is none of their business.
“The survey makes it clear that there is
still a stigma associated with reporting the
suspected maltreatment of a child,” said
Jeanette Lewis, OACAS executive director.
“This must change, because every child
has the right to a happy and healthy child-
hood.”
The DCAS currently has 922 children in
care. In 2005-06, the most common inves-
tigation types were physical harm, neglect
and domestic violence.
Purple ribbons and donation boxes are
available throughout Durham Region this
month.
In addition to raising awareness, the
campaign raises funds for the Durham
Children’s Aid Foundation, supporting ed-
ucation, recreation and skills development
programs.

local campaign, visit www.durhamcas.com.

cators of physical, sexual and emotional
abuse and how to contact a local Children’s
Aid Society, visit www.useyourvoice.ca.

Sims and Carol Martel, and Andrea Maenza from Communications, display the purple ribbons and bracelets.
The smart way to learn is at Grade Expectations Learning Centres
Learning is not always easy. For some it can be
a diffi cult and frustrating experience.
Since 1993 Grade Expectations Learning Cen-
tres® have been helping young people reach their
full potential in a productive learning environment.
With a new location in Whitby that opened last
fall, Grade Expectations Learning Centres offer
individualized tutoring programs specifi cally de-
signed with your child’s needs in mind.
This is achieved through a series of compre-
hensive standardized diagnostic tests that de-
termine your child’s academic strengths, abilities
and areas requiring attention. The assessment
consists of a review of your child’s school history
and assignments. Also with your consent there is
continuing dialogue with your child’s classroom
teacher. This partnership between teachers and
the student maximizes their learning potential.
Taught in private classrooms of no more than
three students, an Ontario certifi ed teacher follows
the detailed lesson plan created from the results of
the assessment.
The small class sizes create an atmosphere
where communication and learning fl ourish.
Director Rosana Gardner says that students at-
tend classes two hours each week and reports are
given to the parents after the second
week, fourth week and then every
four weeks. Of course teachers are
always available to give you ongoing
feedback on your child’s progress.
“While it’s recommended that
students attend classes for a minimum of fi ve
months,” she explains. “You can continue the pro-
gram with no obligation on a month to month ba-
sis.”
Grade Expectation Learning Centres started
in 1993 and today has 34 Canadian owned and
operated locations in Ontario.
Grade Expectation Leaning centre is located
at 701 Rossland Rd. (upper level) in Whitby. For

Foster, Heard
join elite group
of club members
By Al Rivett
Sports Editor
PICKERING — Seeing the other
Wall of Fame plaques adorning the
Pickering Recreation Complex pool
was all the motivation needed for
Allison Foster to someday want to
join that select company.
Now, the 14-year-old national-cal-
ibre swimmer and fellow clubmate
Kaleigh Heard, 15, will take their
place among the elite, national- and
international-level swimmers in the
club after they were honoured at
the Pickering Swim Club’s annual
awards night recently.
“I remember walking on the deck
and seeing the wall and I was like, ‘I
want my face to go on that wall too’,”
says Foster.
Heard and Foster, who each made
their debuts at the senior nationals
in Montreal last July, are just the
seventh and eighth swimmers to be
enshrined on the Wall of Fame in
the 33-year history of the Pickering
Swim Club. They’ll join former
Olympians Lisa Flood and Laura
Nicholls, among others.
In addition to swimming at na-
tionals, Heard and Foster, both
sprint and distance freestylers, were
members of the first relay team from
the Pickering club to ever qualify for
senior nationals. They were joined
on the team by Jessica Ward and
Danielle Gomba, both previous Wall
of Fame inductees.
Competing at senior nationals
this past summer, says Foster, who’s
still a junior-level swimmer, was ex-
citing and perhaps a little unsettling,
too.
“It’s very different racing than the
age-group meets. You get used to
being at the top, but when you go
to nationals you’re not at the top,”
she says, noting that her dream is to
eventually represent Canada at the
Olympic Summer Games.
Former Canadian Olympian and
Pickering resident Craig Hutchison
was the guest speaker at the swim
banquet. He represented Canada at
the 2000 Games in Sydney, Austra-
lia, where he helped the Canadian
4-x-100-metre medley relay team to
a sixth-place finish.
Hutchison, a graduate of Ari-
zona State University who’s now
an engineer working in Markham,
notes that, in the end, swimming
contributed much more to his life
than being an Olympian or winning
races.
“Swimming to me is a lot more
than being first to the wall,” he
told the audience. “I met my wife
through swimming and I met my
best man through swimming.”
After Sydney, Hutchison noted
that he continued to train through
the next four-year Olympic cycle,
swimming at the 2002 Common-
wealth Games. In 2004, at age 29,
he attempted to land in his second
Olympics as a member of Canada’s
4-x-100-metre medley relay team at
the trials that year. The relay team,
however, finished just over the
Olympic qualifying standards. He
retired from competitive swimming
soon after.
Currently, Hutchison remains in-
volved in swimming as a volunteer
at the Pickering club, under head
coach Lucie Hewitt-Henderson.
The swim club also presented
a host of other awards during the
course of the evening. They were:
• Stroke awards: Butterfly - Cameron
Ta ylor; Backstroke - Steven Taylor;
Breaststroke - Nadine Rodricks; Free-
style - Philip Kay; Individual medley
- Kyle Leng;
• Performance awards: Junior Pro-
vincials - Ainsley Corkum, Michael
Foster, Carleen Ginter, Kayla Ginter,
Caroline Gomba, Rayah Gugliotta,
Alysha Lynden, Robert Masters, Emily
Mayer, Hollie Smith, Meghan Toswell,
Katie Webster; Junior and Senior
Provincials - Jose Baylon, Jeffrey
Cernele, Alex Griffith, Michael Storto;
Junior Provincials and Age Group
Nationals - Kayla Bannister and Alison
Russell; Junior and Senior Provincials
and Easterns - Adam Gomba; Junior
and Senior Provincials, Easterns and
Senior Nationals - Allison Foster, Dani-
elle Gomba, Kaleigh Heard, Jessica
Ward;
• Most improved athletes: Develop-
ment Team 1 - Melissa Devers; Devel-
opment Team 2 - Kent Leng; Junior
blue - Rayah Gugliotta; Junior red and
senior red - Meaghan Douse; Senior
blue and white - Brianne Porter;
• Senior national relay: Danielle
Gomba, Jessica Ward, Allison Foster,
Kaleigh Heard;
• Grand Tomato Head award (special
award): Connor Dach;

tance of 100,00 metres - 1. Melanie

vers; Senior blue level, distance of

PICKERING — The Pine Ridge
Secondary School Pumas junior
girls’ basketball team cut it close
en route to the championship at
the recent Ajax High School tour-
nament.
Facing an undefeated Notre
Dame Catholic Secondary School
Cougars in the championship
game, the Pumas emerged with
a narrow 43-42 victory. Monique
Johnson was a key contributor on
both ends of the court for Pine
Ridge, netting 16 points. Feli-
cia Roberts, Michelle Dixon and
Shona Dunkley contributed solid
defensive efforts.
Kim West recorded a game-high
26 points, followed by Whitney El-
lenor with 14 to pace the Pumas’
offensive attack.
Pumas’ head coach Cameron
Nekkers noted he was proud of
the players’ efforts throughout
the tournament, adding that their
hard work at practices paid off.
The Pumas played two games
last Friday, starting the tourna-
ment with a solid 54-40 victory
over Oshawa’s O’Neill CVI Red-
hawks. West against topped all
scorers with a 32-point perfor-
mance. Dunkley was a force for
Pine Ridge on the defensive end.
In Game 2, the Pumas ran past
the Dunbarton High School Spar-
tans 40-25 to book their tickets to
the final. Brittany Arsenault played
well offensively and defensively in
the victory. She also added four
points.

PICKERING — A banner senior
boys’ soccer season for the St. Mary
Catholic Secondary School Mon-
archs came to a frustrating end on
Thursday afternoon.
The Monarchs faced the Mon-
signor Paul Dwyer Catholic High
School Saints in the Lake Ontario
Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA)
‘AAAA’ semifinals in Oshawa, with
the favoured Monarchs dropping a
heartbreaking 2-1 decision.
Dwyer will meet the Father Leo J.
Austin Catholic Secondary School
Wildcats in the LOSSA ‘AAAA’ soc-
cer final in Oshawa on Monday at 1
p.m. Austin defeated the Dunbarton
High School Spartans 1-0 in sud-
den-death overtime in the other
semifinal.
The Saints opened the scoring
in the first half, with the scoring
remaining 1-0 in Dwyer’s favour at
the end of the break. In the second
half, however, the Monarchs tied
the score as Luke Stedmond put St.
Mary on an even footing with the
Saints. Dwyer scored the eventual
winning marker with about 10 min-
utes remaining. St. Mary put all-out
pressure on the Saints’ defence in
the dying minutes of regulation time
and on into injury time, but couldn’t
convert on its chances.
“They played their hearts out, but
we couldn’t do it,” says St. Mary
coach Melanie Cayford, adding the
Monarchs hit several posts during
the course of the semifinal, and also
had several corner kicks in the final
minutes of the game.
The Monarchs advanced to the
semifinal game after notching a 6-3
win over the Uxbridge Secondary
School Tigers in the quarter-finals.
St. Mary finished LOSSA play with
a 6-2 mark, including a 5-1 record in
LOSSA regular-season play.

Durham Windows and Doors
Brings Mobile Showroom
To Your Door
Wa yne Hutchison brings to the
replacement window and door busi-
ness a new and long overdue feature.
It’s a Mobile Showroom which just
may be the only one in Canada.
“The day is gone when you car-
ried some brochures and a sample
window to a customer’s home,” ex-
plains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired
North York Mobile Library truck and
installed interior walls along with all
of my window samples.”
When you call Durham Win-
dows and Doors for a free estimate,
Wayne will show up at your door
with his Mobile Showroom which
you’ll enter by way of a sliding patio
door.
Inside, displayed on the walls,
are the Vinyl Window Designs series
of vinyl windows which you’re free
to operate and you’ll discover the
many special features including how
they can be cleaned without going
outside.
“After being in this business for
26 years, I can honestly say these are
the fi nest windows on the market,”
says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed
to reduce air leakage and come with
heavy duty hardware.”
All Vinyl Window Designs win-
dows come with Low E Glass which
fi lters out the ultraviolet rays keeping
your home cooler in the summer and
eliminate fading of your curtains,
drapes and furniture.
All of the windows come with
a lifetime warranty on the frame,
hardware and glass.
Wa yne would also like his cus-
tomers to know that he does all of the
estimates personally, eliminating the
cost of a salesperson.
Durham Windows and Doors
also does all of its own installations,
which ensures that every customer
gets a high quality job done at the
best possible price.
Durham Windows and Doors is
located at 696 King St. W. in Osha-
wa. For more information call (905)

Uxbridge Community
Centre site of
emergency exercise
By Jeff Hayward
Staff Writer
DURHAM — A chemical spill,
out-of-control fire, flood, even a tor-
nado could happen at any time.
Fortunately in Uxbridge, and the
rest of Durham, there are proce-
dures in place to deal with such
situations. At the Uxbridge Com-
munity Centre Thursday, Oct. 19,
about 300 individuals, including
more than 100 volunteer ‘evacuees’,
the Uxbridge Fire Department, Dur-
ham Region Social Services, Dur-
ham Health, Emergency Medical
Services and Durham Police were
on hand to simulate response to a
derailment of a train carrying toxic
substances.
Busloads of evacuees poured
into the community centre, one of
two emergency evacuation centres
in Uxbridge. The other, said Ivan
Ciuciura, the Region’s director of
emergency management (DEMO),
was Uxbridge Secondary School.
Members of community groups
such as Canadian Red Cross and
Salvation Army stationed inside the
community centre worked quickly
to record information about each
person. “It’s not only for register-
ing... we can (also) identify a medi-
cal problem,” said Mr. Ciuciura.
One resident was identified as
having scabies and another had West
Nile virus. Response teams evalu-
ated whether the affected should be
isolated from other evacuees.
Wendy Hayko, a student of Dur-
ham College’s emergency manage-
ment program, was brought in a
wheelchair to the registration tables.
Ms. Hayko was suffering from a
mock sprained ankle, and had to be
carried by medical staff to a first-aid
room. Once there, Ms. Hayko had
her ‘swollen’ ankle treated with ice
and bandaging, while others around
her, including teenage girls who had
broken down in tears, were also
looked after.
Meanwhile outside, Animal Con-
trol tended to pets brought along
when individuals left their homes.
Uxbridge Fire Chief Simon Al-
mond, also the municipality’s Com-
munity Emergency Management
Coordinator (CEMC), explained
how an evacuation works on a local
level.
“O nce you realize it’s beyond the
normal capabilities of the fire de-
partment, then we call our mutual
aid partners... we’re also going to
activate our emergency operations
centre.
“It’s up to elected officials to de-
cide it they want to declare an emer-
gency or not.”
To get people to emergency cen-
tres, explained Mr. Ciuciura, Dur-
ham Region Transit will be called
upon. Even during a strike, “Buses
are still available... there’s a clause
that the Region has to come back to
work in an emergency.” During the
practice scenario, a school bus was
used instead.
Bob Ferguson, manager of the
arena portion of the centre, said he
doesn’t recall any specific Uxbridge
emergencies on a grand scale in
past years. However, “The arena was
used as a water centre during the
(2003) blackout,” he said.
Emergency evacuation exercis-
es are ongoing and were last held
in Scugog in 2003, noted Mr. Ci-
uciura, who added the exercises
rotate through each municipality.
The point of the exercises are “two-
fold... to provide training and make
improvements to any planning we
have done,” he said.
According to DEMO, 35 facili-
ties throughout Durham have been
identified as suitable evacuation
centres. For more information on
the Region’s evacuation plan, visit
www.region.durham.on.ca/demo.
