[ Briefly ] Clerk pepper sprayed during Pickering robbery PICKERING — A convenience store clerk was pepper sprayed during a robbery early Saturday in Pickering, police said. The 46-year-old clerk was taken to hospital for treatment after being sprayed in the face by a man who was also armed with a handgun, Dur- ham police said. The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. Saturday at a Conve- nience Plus store on Kingston Road. The bandit, described as a black man aged 18 to 24, made off with cash and cigarettes. He’s described as 6- feet-3 and 180 pounds, and was wearing a black coat and ball cap and blue jeans. As of Dec. 1, the new salary for trust- ees will go up more than three times the $5,000 currently provided, Durham District School Board trustees decided at their Oct. 16 meeting. The increase is retroactive and gives $20,535 to trustees who served from Sept. 1, 2005 to Nov. 30, 2006, plus additional allow- ances for the board chairperson and vice-chairperson. But, not all trustees welcomed the retroactive pay. Whitby Trustee Eliza- beth Roy wanted to vote separately for the salary increase and the retroactive pay components, but didn’t receive enough support from her colleagues. “I’m going to vote against the whole motion then, especially in regards to the retroactive pay,” said Trustee Roy, who is not running for re-election as a trustee in the Nov. 13 election. “I don’t feel comfortable with voting ourselves a 328 per cent increase.” As recommended by a citizens’ ad- visory committee, the board approved a trustee base salary amount of $5,900 per person, plus another $2,500 for being vice-chairperson and $5,000 for the chairperson. In addition, trustees will get more than $10,500 for an enrol- ment component of the provincial reg- ulation, which multiplies the board’s average daily enrolment by $1.75 and then divides it by the number of trust- ees. As a result, the chairperson will receive an extra $3,316 on top of the trustee amount, and the vice-chairper- son $1,658. Oshawa trustee and board chairman Mike Barrett asked for it to be noted that Pickering Trustee Paul Crawford abstained from voting. The vote was not recorded, but only Trustee Roy voted in opposition. After the meeting, Trustee Roy said she plans on donating a portion of the retroactive pay back to schools for scholarships - namely, $500 to Henry Street, Anderson and Sinclair high schools in Whitby, for a student seek- ing and unable to afford health care. She also wants to give some to R.A. Sennett Public School, also in Whitby. “I came into this knowing what I’m making,” said Trustee Roy. During the meeting, Trustee Barrett said all those who joined the board after 1996 were elected knowing the $5,000 salary they would receive, but before 1996, when trustee honoraria across the province was capped, Dur- ham trustees made $13,000 a year plus benefits. “The $5,000 has been a joke since it was implemented,” said Trust- ee Barrett, adding it was done to pun- ish school boards, namely Toronto, for high trustee salaries. He said the Province promised to increase the salary a year ago, and it’s not fair to now leave it on the shoul- ders of trustees to decide if they get the money. Trustee Barrett added it’s wrong for the Province to only pro- vide funding for half the increase and retroactive amount, as announced in a memo to the board this weekend, according to Craig Burch, the board’s director of education. Although the committee also recom- mended a $50 payment per trustee per meeting for attending Special Educa- tion Advisory Committee and Super- vised Alternative Learning for Excused Pupils meetings, it did not go through. “With regards to this, I don’t think we should be paying an honoraria for recognition of attendance to statutory committee meetings,” said Trustee Roy. She said in the past, some trust- ees haven’t expressed much interest in attending. Through the $50 recom- mendation, parents and other mem- bers on those committees would not be receiving the increase, she added. She said the fee would give trustees an incentive to go just for the money. The Province’s honoraria legislation required school boards to get recom- mendations from a citizens’ advisory committee before they could approve an increase. Service shop, office and restaurant uses put on hold By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — Council has given the necessary zoning approvals to make way for a Home Depot in Pickering. Brookdale Centre Inc. applied for the zoning to permit commercial development on property border- ing Hwy 401, south of Kingston Road and east of Dixie Road. The applicant asked for permission for a home im- provement store, as well as a variety of retail, including personal service shop, office and restaurant uses. Council approved only the home improvement centre use subject to an “H” holding provision. Before that can be lifted the site owner would have to come up with and register a site plan agreement that meets the wishes of the City, satisfies the Region of Durham finan- cially, and satisfies the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority with respect to environmental and engi- neering requirements. Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dick- erson moved the recommendation to just go with the home improvement centre approval. “Let’s go with this site, this site only for the Home Depot and they can come back for the rest later,” he said. As part of the site plan agreement, the applicant must transfer land to the City for public roads, secure the money for the construction of the internal roads, and have construction management and traffic management plans, among other requirements. The Thingamaboob is made of pink beads that show women the different lump sizes that can be detected through a variety of breast-screening methods. The beads illustrate the following: • The smallest beads represent the average size lump found by getting regular mammograms. • The third largest bead shows women the average size lump found by their fi rst mammogram. • The second largest bead shows the average size lump found by a clinical breast examination by a healthcare professional. • The largest bead shows the average size lump found by women performing regular breast self-examinations. The Thingamaboob can be used as an ornamental keychain or purse charm, so that it becomes a daily reminder for women to follow breast cancer screening guidelines for their age group. The Canadian Cancer Society recommends: • Women 70 or older, talk to their doctor about a screening program for you. • Women between 50 and 69, have a mammogram every 2 years. • Women between 40 and 49, discuss with their doctor their risk of breast cancer, along with the benefi ts and risks of mammography. • Women over the age of 40, have a clinical breast examination by a trained health professional at least every 2 years. • Women can also consider doing breast self-examination to learn what is normal for their breasts and report any changes they fi nd to their doctor. Each purchase of the Canadian Cancer Society Thingamaboob helps fund vital cancer research and cancer-related support programs. The Thingamaboob can be purchased for $5 at Canadian Cancer Society unit offi ces in Ontario. For more information, visit www.cancer. ca/thingamaboob. In a time when boys wore short, clean hair cuts, male teachers dressed in suits and women in dresses, Mr. Brown was starting the longest part of his teaching career at the brand new school on Lincoln Street. “It was Lincoln Street, but they called it Lincoln Avenue (Public School) right from the start,” said Ruth Doble, wife to the school’s first principal, the late Ray Doble. “I think Ray liked avenue better than street.” Although the school held its anni- versary celebration Oct. 17, teachers of the past met up at the school recently to share some of the memories gath- ered over the school’s 50 years. “I just remember everything was new and different and beautiful,” said Mr. Brown, who retired from the school in 1984. Sitting at a table in the school’s li- brary - an area that didn’t exist when the school first started - he said the children were really respectful and it was a wonderful time to teach, less stressful than it is now. Beula Duncan was also one of the school’s first teachers. “Walked right through that same door,” said Ms. Duncan, who taught across the hall from Mr. Brown’s class. “I remember one year, I started off with 23 (students)... it rose to 43,” she said. Ms. Duncan said there were so many kids in her class, she had to get them to pull their desks forward when it was time to get their boots and coats on for recess. “I remember when the girls started wearing slacks,” said Ms. Doble, sitting nearby. Mr. Brown said women started get- ting down on the floor with kids to teach and that’s when they started wearing slacks. Eric Jones said men used to have to wear suits and polished dress shoes. “I remember Ray coming in and saying ‘you have your jacket off’,” said Mr. Jones who also recalled being in- vited by parents for lunch at a student’s house at least once a week when the school day was from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and kids had a longer lunch break. When Mr. Jones started teaching in 1969, a student brought a snake into class and his students found out quick- ly how scared he is of them. “I said get it out of here and he dropped it into the radiator system,” he said. “Believe me, it’s very hard to teach when you’re looking around.” Gloria Becker started teaching at the school in 1972. During her time, many of the kids were bused to school and fewer went home for lunch. The area that currently serves as the school’s library was an open area with four classes then, and on a rainy day, there would be 144 students in the small supervised area at lunch. In the 1980s, a lot of kids were bused in from Maple Ridge Public School while their school was being built, she said. During the 1980s, Mr. Jones was moved to primary classes, as were some other men in teaching, to pro- vide a father figure for students from divorced families. He said at one point, a quarter of his class was from “broken homes.” The teachers there agreed the school has changed a lot since the early days. “It’s certainly changed in size,” said Mr. Brown. “They modernized it quite a bit,” added Mr. Jones. He said the ceilings have come down and now there aren’t as many furnaces. When winter was near, the custodian would complain because he had to check seven furnac- es for the school, which was smaller then. “Every section had its own little heating section,” Mr. Jones said. Other memories from the teachers included students picking wild straw- berries at the east end of the property when there was still lots of empty land, cooking corn for students during a special school lunch, having a Hal- loween costume parade around the school, and pulling a student literally stuck in the mud. Lincoln Avenue celebrates 50 years of teaching Staff at Lincoln Avenue Public School included Beula Duncan, Bob Kennington, Marg Patterson, George Brown, Gail Cook, Beverley Jowitt, Kay Miller, Vera Murison, Ray Doble, Doris Hortop and Helen Linton. The submitted photo is undated. The school celebrated its 50th anniversary Tuesday, Oct. 17. By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — The debate over who’s responsible for garbage pickup at bus stops continues. At the Oct. 4 meeting of the Durham Region Transit Commission, a report on the issue was again referred back to staff. The transit commission and the works committee recommended to council that the current garbage col- lection contract for transit stop gar- bage cans be continued with regular monitoring with regard to the usage and misuse of the receptacles through the dumping of household waste and yard waste. Currently, through a contractor, the Region collects garbage on a weekly basis from about 100 garbage cans at various stops across Durham. The cost per stop is $8.90 plus tax for a total contract value of $52,296.40. Deputy general manager Phil Meagher said there are 3,000 bus stops in the Region and it would be far too expensive to collect from them all. “Here we are talking about saddling the transit commission with garbage pick up when it has nothing to do with transit,” Oshawa Councillor Nester Pidwerbecki said. “It is still a garbage issue.” It is a horrendous cost to put on transit, Coun. Pidwerbecki added. “If we create a litter problem then we as a commission clean it up, why aren’t we looking to be more proac- tive,” Oshawa Councillor Brian Nichol- son said. “Why are we always trying to cut the service rather than looking for ways to improve its image.” Oshawa Mayor John Gray said it was only reasonable that responsibility lay with the Region, since it is responsible for transit. “O ne level of government should decide we are responsible for this. We are going to pick it up,” Mayor Gray said. Whitby Mayor Marcel Brunelle said the answer is likely somewhere in the middle. He suggested hiring a contrac- tor with half the cost to be covered by transit and half by the municipality. Staff has been directed to consult with area municipalities and report back with recommendations on wheth- er to reduce, maintain or increase the number of garbage receptacles located at transit stops. Durham Region Transit Commission will continue to pick up the garbage at designated transit stops that had such amenities in effect Jan. 1, 2006. Dur- ham Region Transit will continue to maintain the amenities assumed and in place Jan. 1. However, staff are not recommending an expansion of the program at this time. DISCOVER YOUR DREAM BATHROOM MAKEOVER AT WWW.SUPERIORBATH.CA Wa r ning: Failure to read this article prior to ordering your dream bathroom could cost you time and money. There are choices and they go far beyond the big box outlets and chain stores. In fact, you can get everything you want from Superior Bath Reno, the only bathroom reno specialist in Durham Region with a complete showroom, but none of the hassles and frustrations that often result when you deal with a big box outlet or chain store. That’s because there is no middle man with Superior Bath Reno, located at 31 Barr Road, Unit #4, Ajax, Ontario. You deal directly with the owners and operators of the company. When you deal with a chain store or big box outlet, you are often dealing with two companies – one is the retailer, the other is the contractor hired by the retailer. If there is a problem, you could get “ping-ponged” between the retailer and the contractor, because neither wants to take responsibility if a problem comes up. Don’t get “ping-ponged” between a retailer and the contractor hired by the retailer You could also be headed for trouble if your job is uninteresting to the big box outlet or chain store because it is too small. Or perhaps you want a bathroom renovation in a basement or a condo – jobs that are often rejected by large retailers. Superior Bath Reno, in sharp contrast, is interested in handling all jobs. Take, for example, Catherine Stewart of Ajax, who hired Superior Bath Reno to convert a large basement closet into a three-piece bathroom. “I like to take on different and challenging projects,,” says Joe Beninato, President of Superior Bath Reno. “I guess that is why they call me no ordinary Joe!” Joe certainly impressed Ms. Stewart. “I liked Joe,” says Ms. Stewart, “and I liked the price he gave me for our bathroom!” Other Superior Bath Reno customers are equally impressed with Joe and the rest of the Superior Bath Reno team. “They were polite and took the time to listen to what we needed,” says John Gutsell, who ordered a complete bathroom makeover for his home in Ajax. Friendly Service Quality Workmanship Popular Name-Brands Wade Bissell, who has a condo in Ajax, says he was impressed with Superior Bath Reno from start to finish. “I looked at them after I saw their television commercial, and I looked at one of the big box stores and some local handymen,” remembers Mr. Bissell. He chose Superior Bath Reno after he visited the company’s showroom and met Shelley We bb, one of the partners in the company. “I really enjoyed speaking with Shelley,” says Mr. Bissell. “She was so down-to-earth and easy going and she had an answer for all my questions or she got back to me later.” He was equally impressed that Shelley and the other staff at Superior Bath Reno understood how to meet the rules and regulations for bathroom renovations in a condo. Once the installation began, he noticed the workmanship of the installer, Sam Martin, one of the founding partners of Superior Bath Reno. “I noticed, for example, that he didn’t put dry wall behind the shower wall – he put in concrete board. You could see he used quality materials, he really knew what he was doing, and he did the job in the promised block of time." The men and women on the jury are being asked to decide whether or not the Crown has proven its case during the trial, which began in Whitby Sept. 5. It has included testimony from a number of eyewitnesses to the Sept. 14, 1994, bloody robbery of the Gagnon Sports shop in Oshawa. Prosecutors Greg O’Driscoll and John Scott have portrayed Mr. Woodcock as the short, stocky bandit who burst into the shop just before supper time, a toque pulled over his face, and screamed at staff and patrons to hit the ground. When the victims failed to comply immediately the gunman opened fire, killing store owner Roger Pardy and wounding three others. Earlier in the day, the prosecutors told jurors, Mr. Woodcock and his accomplice, Roshan Norouzali, had stopped Pickering resident Kenneth Thomas as he went about some errands, taking him to a remote area near the Pickering nuclear plant and shooting him four times in the head before making off with his immaculately-kept Chevrolet Caprice. The Caprice was used as a getaway vehicle and abandoned a few blocks from Gagnon’s, then located on Simcoe Street South in Oshawa. During a robbery that took at most 90 seconds the bandits smashed a glass display case and escaped with 11 hand- guns, never pausing to demand cash or valuables. Mr. Pardy had $3,000 cash in his pocket when he died. Mr. Woodcock did not testify; his de- fence team called no evidence. Instead, lawyer Paula Rochman used her clos- ing address to jurors to raise the pos- sibility it was another man -- Deryck Thompson, caught with Mr. Norouzali and Mr. Woodcock after a violent rob- bery in 1995 -- who joined Mr. Norou- zali on the murderous spree in Dur- ham Region. Mr. Norouzali was tried along with Mr. Woodcock in 1998 and convicted of two counts of first-degree murder, as well as the other charges on a lengthy indictment. Mr. Woodcock was also found guilty, but a subsequent ruling by Ontario’s Court of Appeal ordered a new trial. The appeal court ruled evidence heard at the original trial was prejudicial to Mr. Woodcock. So when the new trial was held this fall, jurors heard that Mr. Woodcock was involved in a robbery at a grocery store in March of 1995, and that he had discharged his gun. What they didn’t hear is that Mr. Woodcock deliberately shot a customer in the legs. Mr. Woodcock, who can fairly be called a career criminal, had been released from the provincial jail in Millbrook just five days before the Ga- gnon’s robbery after serving a hitch for a parole violation. Police say that between Sept. 19, 1994, and March of 1995 he and Mr. Norouzali embarked on a crime wave that included a string of robberies in the London and St. Thomas area, as well as a couple of forays into the GTA. Superior Court Justice Edwin Min- den began his charge to the jury Mon- day morning and concluded Tuesday. Jurors are to be sequestered until they return with a verdict. Bathroom Reno Tips Tip: If you choose a chain store or big box outlet, you are actually hiring two companies – one is the retail outlet, the other is a contractor hired by the retail outlet. That makes you the middle man between two companies – not a good position. Superior Bath Reno installers don’t leave until the job is done right. Tip:Watch out for “added costs”, like a fee for the estimate. I don’t want to seem mor- bid, but, as any survivor will tell you, that kind of stuff gets you thinking. Try as you might, once you’ve high-fived the Grim Reaper outside the hospital doors, watched him throw you that bony-fingered thumbs-up in your rear-view mirror, you can’t ever really get him out of your noggin. So it’s natural, I guess, when you see other passengers leav- ing the bus, to wonder, even for a while, if your stop isn’t just down the road a bit. So, as I pondered another friends’ passing, I wondered how I might acquit myself at the Pearly Gates. And, the more I thought about it, the more I realized this was a topic all of us might want to consider from time to time. After all, as Jim Morrison said, (and shortly thereafter proved) “No one here gets out alive.” I wonder if the conversation might go something like this: Peter: Thank you Mr. Bin Laden, please pick up your pitchfork and take a seat over there. Just ask Mr. Chretien to noodge over a bit. The elevator will be here shortly. Now then, who’s next? Neil: Mr. Cro... Peter: Oh, yes, here you are, just follow Mr. Bin Laden please. Neil: What? Peter: To the elevator. Neil: The “down” elevator? Peter: Correct. Now there’s quite a line-up sir, if... Neil: Hold it! I’m not going down. I’m going up... or at least sideways. Peter: Not according to our records. Neil: Why? What’d I do? Peter: Sir I really don’t have... Neil: What did I do? Peter: Well, there’s some- thing here about ill-mannered behavior in a place called the “Don Valley Park?” Neil: It’s the Don Valley Park- way bonehead, and it doesn’t count. Everybody there is ill- mannered. You could stick Moses on that thing and inside of five minutes he’d be flipping the bird to his own mother. Peter: Well, there’s a note here about visiting some “Adult weeb-sites?” Neil: It’s web sites. Adult web- sites! Peter: Yes. That, apparently, is frowned upon. Neil: Just a minute. Have you ever been online Pete? Peter: Well no. We don’t have high-speed up here. Neil: Well just sit down. Hey, “Dubya,” before you get on the elevator! Lemme borrow your laptop. Now, lookie here Pete. This is an adult website. Peter: Oh my. Is that... pea- nut butter? Um, do you mind if I just bookmark this page? Neil: End of lesson. What else ya got? Peter: Well, all right. But this last item really is a doozy. Neil: What? Peter: It says here you were an Actor. Neil: Yeah? Peter: Well, honestly Mr. Crow, we’ve heard an awful lot about your antics. I mean you can’t just go through life treat- ing everyone around you like dirt, it’s... Neil: Wait! My name’s not Crow. It’s Crone. Peter: Are you an actor? Neil: Yes! But I’m a Canadian actor. The worst you can accuse me of is making bad movies. I’m clean. Peter: Oh. I guess there’s been a mix-up sir. You go right ahead and pick up your wings over there to the left. And when you get there would you kindly tell Mr. Domi he’s in the wrong line? Thanks. Oh, and Mr. Crone? Neil: Yeah? Peter: Can I hang onto this laptop? To the editor: Regarding the condemna- tion of North Korea. I wholeheartedly join the chorus of voices castigating the regime of North Korea and condemning its alleged un- derground weapons test. But, to any protesting na- tion jealously guarding its own nuclear weapons technology, let it be told: “Physician, heal thyself.” How the irony and supreme hypocrisy of the situ- ation can go unnoted is very disappointing. The most vo- ciferous condemnation comes from a nation that, having car- ried out hundreds of above- and below-ground tests, now has enough data to pursue weapons research on the com- puter. A more honest approach would see the international community condemning ALL countries possessing nuclear weapons and reminding them, that to have any credibility, we must see their own stockpiles of WMDs eliminated. Christopher Curran Ajax Election candidates need to come clean on issues To the editor: Here’s hoping those run- ning for political office in the upcoming municipal election make the effort to be clearly understandable where they stand on the issues. Be straight up with us and lay your cards on the table. To some of us, political office is an honour- able pursuit and a privilege that requires candidates to be- have accordingly. Keep it simple guys! For example, are you for or against housing developments above the train line, north of Finch. It would be nice to know. Don’t give us obscure boundary lines we can’t relate to, landmarks are okay for the big issues. Don’t confuse us with dif- ferent names for the same area; the Rouge Duffins Agri- cultural Preserve, is not a land assembly or the Cherrywood neighbourhood. There’s a saying: I know what I said. I know you heard what I said. But do you know what I mean. Make the effort so we understand what you mean. If you are for the Big Pipe tell us why. If you are opposed to the Big Pipe tell us what you have done to stop it. Political contributions from developer’s corporations is an issue in this election- be clear if you accept donations and why it is OK to do so. Like- wise, if you don’t, why is it you don’t. Lastly, the vision thing. What is in your dreams of what Pickering can be. We need to know if you are passionate about our city. Inspire us, get us fired up about our city. It’s an easy thing to gauge: if we vote in droves you’ve done it! If, as in the past, only 20 per cent of us vote you’ve failed. Trustees sign off on huge raises Christmas sure came early for trustees at Durham’s two major school boards this past week. In votes to decide how much they’ll get after the next elec- tion, trustees gave themselves a raise of more than three times what they were receiving at the public board and double what Catholic board trustees were receiving. As if that wasn’t bad enough, trustees decided it wasn’t sufficient only newly elected representatives would climb the salary staircase -- they decided to make the raises retroactive to Sept. 1, 2005. That means public board trustees will get a nice, tidy bonus of $14,295 in retroactive pay while Catholic board trustees walk away with an additional $7,832.50 over that time frame. Why the need to make the salaries retroactive? It seems trustees were unhappy that the Province left the ball in their court when it came time to decide their pay. Unlike the decision by the former Conservative government of Mike Harris in 1996, when trustee salaries were dropped across the board to $5,000 provincewide, the Dalton McGuinty government allowed boards to individually decide on increases. The decision was delayed for more than a year, and was finally made over the past few weeks at both local boards. It seems then that local trustees felt they should have had the money from Sept. 1, 2005 and decided to give it to themselves. It’s a lame argument, which leaves the taxpayer, as usual, on the hook. While the $5,000 annual payment to each trustee was arbitrary and on the low side, trustees should have got about $10,000 per year with no special bonuses for chair or vice-chair. That would have righted a perceived wrong and would have more fairly compen- sated trustees for the work they do. There was certainly no need to make the pay retroactive. While it may not be a large chunk of a huge annual budget, trustees have made it clear in recent years that every dollar counts. It’s a pity they’re playing so fast and loose with their own salaries when cash goes wanting for school supplies and parents have to fundraise to pay for classroom essentials. Perhaps, once elected, trustees can have another look at this issue and agree they’ve gone too far. Let’s remember, the job involves serving the needs of students, not bank accounts. 905.420.2222 cityofpickering.com 24 Hour Access 905.420.4660 South Pickering Seniors Bazaar Saturday, November 4 9 am – 1 pm East Shore C.C. 910 Liverpool Rd. 905.420.6588 ATTEND PUBLIC MEETINGS AT CITY HALL All meetings are open to the public. Car rally ready to roll in Claremont, with $500 in prizes up for grabs By Jillian Follert Staff Writer DURHAM — In the summer of 2005, an Uxbridge family of five moved out of a basement apartment and into a new home of their own thanks to Habitat for Humanity North Durham. Now, the organization is hoping to ex- pand into south Durham to help families in this part of the region realize the same dream. “There is a great need for housing help in all of Durham,” said Jeffrey Hayes, chairman of Habitat for Human- ity North Durham Inc. “If we can get a family into a home and on better foot- ing, it’s a hand up -- not a hand out.” Habitat for Humanity Canada is a non-profit, faith-based organization that mobilizes volunteers and community partners to build affordable housing. Habitat promotes home ownership as a way of breaking the cycle of poverty. There are 70 Habitat for Human- ity affiliate organizations in Canada and 30,000 volunteers who have built 450 homes. Homes are built or rehabilitated through volunteer labour and tax-de- ductible donations of money and mate- rials. Recipient families also invest hun- dreds of hours of labour, called “sweat equity.” When complete, Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with no-interest mort- gages. The homeowners’ monthly mort- gage payments go into a revolving fund, which is used to build more houses. In addition to volunteers and donated materials, it takes about $60,000 in real money and a co-operative municipality to donate a site, before a house can be built. The City of Oshawa has been in con- tact with Habitat for Humanity and sug- gested a potential site -- but Mr. Hayes says issues like re-zoning are still being investigated. The public is invited to an information session this Sunday, Oct. 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Oshawa Girl Guide House, 121 Simcoe St. S., to learn more about plans to expand Habitat into south Dur- ham. Volunteers are needed to help with building, fundraising and organizing. Skilled help and those without experience are welcome, as long as they can donate a minimum of four hours to the cause. For more information about this weekend’s information session, call 905-852-8802 or e-mail info@habitatnorthdurham. com. Sports briefs OCTOBER 18, 2006 [ Basketball ] Bankers deposit win in opener AJAX — A solid second half led Sco- tiabank past defending league champion East Side Mario’s in the inaugural game of the Ajax Ladies’ Recreational Basketball League’s 2006-07 season last Wednesday night. Scotiabank held East Side Mario’s to only six points in the final half en route to a 39-32 victory. The first quarter was low scoring as each team took measure of the other. East Side Mario’s, led by Delcina Wind’s 12 points, found their rhythm first and emerged from the half with a solid 23-13 lead over the bankers. However, the bankers’ patient invest- ment in the first half paid large dividends in the second as Scotiabank held East Side’s in check, while matching East Side’s first half output of 23 points. Led by Engrid Carmichael-Johnson with 12 points and Sonia Thomas, who chipped in with 10 second-half points, all Scotiabank players scored. In the second game, the Grey Geese jumped to a 29-14 first-half lead and held on in the second half for a 45-31 victory over the Cherry Red Tomatoes. With the large number of rookies on the squad, it took the Tomatoes some time to blossom. With veterans Colleen Weter- ing and Barb Armstrong leading the way with six points apiece, the Tomatoes had a solid second and outscored the Geese 17-16. Grey Goose’s Nicole Pennie hit a trey in the first half and finished with a game- high 25 points. The Panthers parted with their lead- ing scorer of a year ago, centre Justin Fox, 19, power forward Todd Hosmer and starting goaltender Marc Stuart. In exchange, the Panthers received Newmarket’s starting netminder Brad Fogal, 20, veteran defenceman Kory Helowka, 20, and 19-year-old forward Greg Payne. All three new Panthers were in uni- form Sunday in Toronto against the To ronto Junior Canadians. Fogal drew the starting assignment and was in- strumental in the Panthers’ 3-2 over- time victory. Fogal faced 37 shots in earning his first win as a Panther. Helowka earned an assist on the second of two Phil McIlhone goals in regulation time. Helowka saw plenty of action in Sunday’s contest, including powerplay duty. Robinson says the deal was in the works for two weeks, but only on Sat- urday did all the elements come to- gether. The principal in the deal was Fogal, whom the Panthers have cov- eted for some time. The addi- tion of a solid veteran blue liner in Helowka was also needed to make the deal work. Although the Panthers gave up two high-pow- ered offensive contributors in Fox and Hosmer, Robinson says the team, with the arrival of veteran for- ward Phil McIlhone, formerly of the Ontario Hockey League’s Oshawa Gen- erals, meant that there was an over- abundance of scoring depth on the roster. Moreover, the team’s defensive woes were exacerbated with the loss of veteran rearguard Kevin Huinink for another two weeks with a broken jaw. “It was made to shore up our de- fence. We gave up 24 goals in three games and it needed to stop,” says Robinson. “With Phil McIlhone com- ing in, it put us over the top in our of- fensive depth. (The trade) will help our goals against -- no question about it.” Robinson says the transaction should help both clubs. “They were in dire straits offensively and we needed some defensive help, so it will benefit both teams.” Panthers’ head coach Pat Curcio explained that, while it’s never easy to trade two talented forwards and a goaltender with potential, the deal should provide a big boost on defence as well as some balance to the roster. “From a hockey perspective you can’t play nine forwards who want to play on the power play and pen- alty killing units. We had an overabun- dance of scoring and not enough guys willing to take care of their own end.” Curcio noted that if Sunday’s win over the Toronto Junior Canadians was any indication, the trade will be a good one for the Panthers. Just last week, the same Canadians team had routed the Panthers soundly, 9-3. The Panthers came back to tie the Canadians at 2-2 with 30 seconds re- maining in regulation time on Sunday. In the five-minute overtime frame, de- fenceman Mike Banwell scored on the power play 10 seconds into the frame. “It was a heck of a win for our hockey club,” says Curcio. Fogal says after getting over the ini- tial shock, he’s excited to finish his tier II junior hockey career in Pickering. “I was shocked, to tell you the truth. Being a hometown boy from Newmarket, playing for them was a dream come true,” says Fogal, who came to Newmarket from Huntsville at the trade deadline two years ago, and played the entire 2005-06 season with the Hurricanes. “But, (the shock) turned to excitement about going to a high-calibre organization with great people. In my first game, I really liked the pace of the game so, now, I’m ec- static about it.” He notes the adjustment to a new team will be easier with Helowka and Payne on board. “It makes the trade a lot easier. I’ve known Kory for years, we went to high school together for years and he’s one of my best friends on the Hurricanes. It will make the transition a lot easier.” All told, the Panthers (8-6-1-0, fourth in South Conference) won two of three on the weekend. After losing a close 5-3 decision to the conference-leading St. Michael’s Buzzers at the Pickering Recreation Complex on Friday night, the Panthers beat the Ajax Attack for the second time this season, 7-3 at the Ajax Community Centre on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers host the North York Rangers at the recreation complex on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Brad Fogal Panthers, Newmarket pull off blockbuster trade Cougars claw Wildcats for crown Notre Dame/News Advertiser Classic basketball final a rough-and-tumble affair By Al Rivett Sports Editor AJAX — Prior to taking the court for their own Notre Dame/News Adver- tiser Basketball Classic, the senior girls’ basketball squad was unsure where it stood among the hoops hierarchy in Durham Region. The verdict? The Notre Dame Cou- gars exceeded all expectations. To put an exclamation point on their play, the Cougars faced a strong Father Leo J. A ustin Catholic Secondary School Wildcats team from Whitby in the Clas- sic final, scoring a close 43-39 victory in a rough-and-tumble contest to claim the inaugural tournament crown on Sat- urday after- noon. The Clas- sic attracted eight teams, including many of the top ‘AAAA’ programs in Durham Re- gion, to the court at the north Ajax school last Friday and Saturday. Having a young senior team and hav- ing never suited up against Austin and Sinclair, another strong Whitby school, yet this year, Notre Dame coach Rose Booker notes there was some trepida- tion as to how her team would perform against such strong foes. But, following the final, all those con- cerns were put to rest. “We’re thrilled,” says Booker. “Hon- estly, we had no idea where we fit in this year. Being a first-year senior team, we’re right there with them, but we still have to get better.” After a few lead changes in the open- ing half, the Cougars clung to a 27-24 lead at half time. The second half, how- ever, belonged to Notre Dame, which led 35-28 in the third quarter and led by as many as nine points in the fourth. The Wildcats showed they’re a quality team by coming on strong in the final minutes, whittling the deficit down to four points when time ran out. The key, says Booker, was putting her best defenders on high-scoring Wild- cats’ guard Rachel Tremaine and get- ting back on defence quickly to counter the Austin fast break. “I think the difference was our de- fence on (Tremaine). We put Nicholle McKenzie on her and her only job was to guard her. We also put Rhea (Pascal) on their other girl down low. That was their role and that’s what made the dif- ference. On the fast break everyone got back on defence. As soon as we turned it over, we beat them down the court.” Austin head coach Heather LaFon- taine noted her Wildcats didn’t match up well against the Cougars’ forward tandem of McKenzie and Pascal, who consistently burned the Wildcats in the paint on second-chance points. “Their size,” says LaFontaine, was to the key to the final. “We had a hard time matching up with their size. With Nicholle and Rhea, they’re big girls. The key was we had to box out and get rebounds -- sometimes we did, some- times we didn’t. We can’t let them get second and third shots.” Both coaches were unfazed by the physical, hotly-contested final, which featured a number of tussles for loose balls. “It was physical, but that’s our style, so I wasn’t surprised,” says Booker of the physical tone of the final. Although Pascal, the tournament’s most valuable player, and front-court mate McKenzie played major roles in the final’s outcome, Pascal was more interested in praising the work of her teammates. “All our players contributed to this,” says Pascal. “I don’t think of myself as a better player than anyone else. Every- one else can think that about me.” As for the final itself, Pascal noted the Cougars rose to the occasion in the second half, outplaying Austin and preserving their lead. “We dominated in the first quarter, slacked off a bit in the second,” she explained. “But, in the second half we stepped it up and got the win. They’re a tough team, but the fact is we stepped it up and proved we could beat them.” McKenzie and Pascal led the Cou- gars with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Tremaine led Austin with a 15-point effort, followed by Ashley Navarro with 11. DurhamDurham Daily News For more on this story, view the Oct. 16 webcast of AJAX — O’Neill Collegiate Redhawks coach Mike Kennelly hoped for more consistent play from his charges at the Notre Dame/News Advertiser Basketball Classic senior girls’ tournament Satur- day. He’s happy to report that he received enough to give his Oshawa-based squad a well-earned, albeit close, 31-27 victory over the St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Monarchs. Although both teams were missing key players, with the Monarchs missing three starters and the Redhawks without two, the game didn’t suffer. The Red- hawks relied on a strong defensive focus, taking away the fast break from the Mon- archs for the most part and mostly keep- ing the St. Mary game on the perimeter. “We’ve been inconsistent this year. There were games that I thought we could have won but, because of poor shooting, we didn’t. We got a bit of a boost today, so I was really happy with them. We did a better job on defence, we created turnovers and got a few fast- break baskets,” says Kennelly. The consolation victory, says Ken- nelly, helped ease the sting of a 16-point loss to St. Mary in Lake Ontario Second- ary School Athletics (LOSSA) league play this season. St. Mary coach Mike Gordensky was philosophical in defeat, saying the ab- sence of the three starters allowed other players to step up. “We lost by four, got off to a bit of a slow start, but we fought back. They did everything I asked of them,” says Gordensky. “Taking nothing away from O’Neill, I thought our team gave me ev- erything I could ask for. I wanted to get some experience for the younger girls and we did.” Katie Doner netted nine and Kris- ten Dewsbury had eight for O’Neill. O’Neisha Lyttle had 11 for St. Mary. O’Neill dropped its opening game to the Father Leo J. Austin Wildcats 56- 16, but bounced back to beat Toronto’s Mary Ward Wolverines 55-54 to earn a consolation final berth. Meanwhile, St. Mary lost its opener 56-18 to Sinclair, but rebounded to shade the G.L. Roberts Lakers 44-37 in its second-round con- test. For more than 25 years, Dun- barton and Broxbourne School of Hertfordshire, England have held sports exchanges. This week, the U.K. school will be on Canadian soil for the second leg of this year’s exchange, which began last March with the Dun- barton rugby teams and the girls’ varsity field hockey team at the English school. “We’re old friends. This is the 15th or 16th exchange between the schools,” says Dunbarton teacher and rugby coach Terry Fallis, who’s been part of six ex- changes at the Pickering school. This year, Broxbourne arrived in Canada on Saturday with 21 girls, 36 boys and seven staff members in tow. During their visit to Canada, they’ll visit four schools. The English students will be at Dunbarton this week- end, arriving on Friday. Their visit will include exhibition rugby and field hockey games at the school on Saturday. Next Mon- day, they’ll be in Oshawa for a stay at Eastdale Collegiate. The field hockey game begins at 10 a.m., followed by exhibi- tion rugby matches at 1 and 2:15 p.m. AJAX OCTOBER SPECIALOCTOBER SPECIAL A PLACE THAT YOU CAN TRUSTA PLACE THAT YOU CAN TRUST Award winning restaurant from the Health Dept. for 10 years in a row Great Food, Great Service, Great Atmosphere & Always Something New 250 Bayly St (behind Dairy Queen)HarwoodMcKenzieHunt St.WestneyHwy 401 Hwy 2 Reservations 905-686-8231 If you don’t know about us please ask your neighbours. Ajax Creative Arts fall show set for this weekend By Fariha Naqvi Mohamed Special to the News Advertiser DURHAM — Just about everyone has thought of what they might do if they ever won the lot- tery. For one passionate artist, it means she’d enrol at an art school. Angela Hennessey loves to paint. At 59 years old, it’s a recent hobby she’s ac- quired. She’s convinced it came as a result of “brushing shoulders with artists.” Back in 2000, Hennessey and a group of friends opened up an art gallery. At the time, her focus was “working with stained glass, painting furniture and work- ing with crafts” until one day she decided she’d try painting. Fortunately for her, she had a hidden talent waiting to be unveiled. Although her six cats constantly serve as an inspiration, she loves to paint in styles ranging from landscape to still life. She often takes pho- tographs and then uses them “to get reference material” for her painting, preferring a more controlled environment in which to work. “Stunning,” is how fellow artist Dawn Ham- mond, from Ajax Creative Arts, describes Hen- nessey’s work. “Her work is very good and very original. Though she works mostly with acrylics, she does sometimes experiment with mixed mediums.” Even though she’s never had any formal training in painting, Hennessey admits she has “taken workshops with a number of well-known artists in Ontario over the last five years.” Living in Cannington, about 45 minutes north of Oshawa, means this full-time volunteer makes the hour-long trek to Ajax and Pickering several times a week. Art is certainly a passion as her hobbies prove. She volunteers everywhere from the Ajax Cre- ative Arts club to the Pickering Museum Village, in addition to serving as the exhibitions chair- woman for the society of Canadian artists. Her work has been on display at a number of art shows and galleries, from Toronto to Montre- al, as well on exhibition at various venues. It will be on display at the Ajax Creative Arts (ACA) Fall Art Show and Sale this weekend, among works from 54 participating artists, all ACA members. This year marks the group’s 40 anniversary, and one of Hennessey’s works, valued at $250, has been chosen to be the prize for the draw. The show is at the Village Community Centre, located at 22 Sherwood Rd. (at Linton Avenue) in Pickering Village. It’s open to the public on Friday, Oct. 20 from 12 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome. He also prides himself on his troubleshooting ability. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely necessary.” Gordon adds “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board can be extremly effi cient and cost effective by saving costly damages to exterior landscaping.” “Homeowners should invest in their foundations,” Gordons says “water corrodes and people tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one. Catch it early enough and you could possibly save yourself a fortune.” “No job is too big or small” he says, adding he will promise you a fair and objective evaluation of the problem. Cozy-up with a fl ick of a switch story by News Canada Take a cozy fi re, family or close friends, and any home becomes a warmer place to settle in. The right fi replace transforms a room, creating an ambience that welcomes and comforts. But who needs the bother of chopping wood, lugging it to the hearth, sweeping ashes or worrying about stray embers? A natural gas fi replace takes the hassle away from burning a fi re and lets you simply enjoy the experience. A fl ick of the switch and your fi replace is ready to be enjoyed. It’s never too hot because you set the temperature and it’s less expensive to operate than either a wood or electric fi replace. Natural gas fi replaces are safe and easy to use and nothing warms up a hard to heat room as effi ciently or beautifully. Should the power fail during a harsh winter storm, no worry for you because your natural gas fi replace can operate without the use of electricity. Your local fi replace retailer can give you an estimate on installing a natural gas fi replace in your home or visit uniongas.com for more information. Dress up your home.
