Buses could be in park Thursday Pickering riders could have to find another way to work and school Friday By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — Come Thursday evening, transit service in parts of the Region could come to a screeching halt. “Unless they change their tactic of bar- gaining we are going to be on strike on Thursday,” said John Johnson, Canadian Auto Workers (CAW’s) DRT unit chair- man. Negotiations between Durham Region Transit (DRT) and the CAW, represent- ing 290 DRT staff, to hammer out a col- lective agreement for most DRT workers began May 23. Both parties came to the bargaining table with extensive propos- als after local transit systems merged to create DRT on Jan. 1. Both sides say they want to reach a deal but are willing to let negotiations end in a strike if it comes to that. CAW members voted for a strike deadline of Thursday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. According to Mr. Johnson, the two sides remain far apart on issues of em- ployee benefits, cost of living adjustment, paid education and part-time jobs. “It hasn’t been moving at all,” Mr. Johnson said. “They haven’t been willing to move on any of our issues.” Garth Johns said he believes there is still room to craft a deal. “If we are real close to making some headway (Wednesday) I would expect it would go into the night until we came to an agreement,” the Region’s commis- sioner of human resources said. “If we get absolutely nowhere than that will be all.” The Region is currently sticking to its July 14 offer; Mr. Johns said the proposed agreement was more than fair. “There has to be some significant Premier celebrates election anniversary at local hospital Thanks Ontarians for their hard work By Danielle Milley Staff Writer DURHAM — Premier Dalton Mc- Guinty shared his third anniversary of being elected premier with Rouge Va lley Ajax and Pickering hospital staff. In a Monday mini tour to celebrate the Liberals’ 2003 election, Premier McGuinty stopped at a school in Ot- tawa, an auto plant in Brampton, and the Ajax-Pickering hospital to thank all Ontarians for their work in helping to make the province stronger. “Over the past three years Ontar- ians have worked hard, they’ve worked well and they’ve worked together and the successes that we’ve enjoyed, whether in education, health care or the economy, are the re- sults of the efforts of the Ontarians on the ground,” he said, adding it was one thing to flow the money, but un- less people on the ground buy into ideas the government couldn’t make improvements. Over the past three years, the Lib- eral government has made many in- vestments in health care, including reducing wait times in key areas such as joint replacement and MRI scans, noted the premier. Much of the investment came from the controversial health tax brought in with the Liberals’ first budget. They’ve also made capital invest- ments, including the highly antici- pated redevelopment of RVAP that was announced in March during the Whitby-Ajax by-election. The redevelopment includes both new construction and renovated space to create a new emergency de- partment, a 30-bed complex continu- ing care unit, nine new in-patient mental health beds, an expanded di- agnostic imaging and a cardiac diag- nostic unit. Despite new infusions of cash into health care, a campaign has been mounting during Mr. McGuinty’s first term by the GTA/905 Healthcare Alli- ance regarding the under funding of 905-area hospitals. According to numbers released in the spring, Durham hospi- tals receive $279 per person less than the provincial av- erage (the average doesn’t include teaching or north- ern hospitals, which cost more to operate). When asked if his government would ensure there were operating dollars to go along with the infra- structure, he said it would continue to invest. “We will continue to make the kind of investment that we have in the past, always with an eye to ensuring that there is equity so that folks on the ground get the sense that everyone is treated fairly,” he said. Mr. McGuinty’s tour of RVAP in- cluded a visit to the maternity ward nurse’s station to personally thank nurses for their hard work. In a meeting regarding a different development application in the Hwy. 2 and Dixie Road area near the pro- posed EMS station, Pickering CAO Tom Quinn was told by Toronto and Region Conservation the develop- ment area might be in a flood plain. Mr. Quinn said TRCA recently did some more detailed mapping in re- gards to flood plains in its watersheds and it appears the EMS station and other developments may fall within the newly mapped area. The other development, including a Home Depot, can still move ahead even if the mapping holds true, but emergency services, hospitals and other essential services are not al- lowed to be built on a flood plain. Mr. Quinn let Region of Durham CAO Garry Cubitt know about the situation and the Region is now work- ing with the TRCA. “The flood plain hasn’t been final- ized yet,” Mr. Cubitt said. More detailed mapping is being done, which will mean a delay for the project that was just about ready to go out for tender. Mr. Cubitt said it would delay the project for “a bit” while they wait for the consultant’s report. The TRCA said it “will work with us to get it resolved as quickly as possible with as little delay as possible,” Mr. Cubitt said. In the meantime, alternative sites are being considered, although Mr. Cubitt said the Region had been look- ing at alternative sites before this in- formation came to light. Richard Armstrong, Emergency Medical Services department man- ager, said the Hwy. 2 and Dixie Road site is the preferred location. The new station, which was to carry a price tag of $2.5 million, had already been approved in a previous Regional budget. It has been the subject of much discussion between Pickering and the Region as several Pickering council- lors didn’t think that site was the right location. Ward 1 Regional Councillor Mau- rice Brenner said Pickering is now willing to move forward at that site if they can come to an agreement re- garding the building’s facade. Pickering wants a two-storey facade so the building will fit in with the vi- sion it has for the Kingston Road cor- ridor. PICKERING — The location of the third body rub parlour in Pickering is still up in the air after a recent Ontario Municipal Board hearing. The OMB granted the appeal of Pickering Spa to have its location at 1050 Brock Rd. rezoned to allow a body rub parlour. The issue came to the OMB after council denied that applica- tion in the spring. Pickering Spa told council that al- though the services it would offer in- cluded aromatherapy massages and others that don’t typically fall under the purview of a body rub parlour, it needed the license and designation because its attendants would not be registered massage therapists. The at- tendants were to be fully clothed and admittance would only be provided to those 18 and older. Shortly after that, an application came before council regarding a body rub parlour at 1630 Bayly St. As a stand alone structure that would not have any signage facing Bayly Street, coun- cil approved it and by doing so gave it the last body rub parlour license. Under the City’s bylaw, there are to be only three body rub establishments licensed at one time. The lawyer for the application on Bayly Street has appealed the OMB’s decision with the courts. Meanwhile an appeal is currently before the board regarding Pickering’s decision to grant the rezon- ing to 1630 Bayly St. It was brought by Andrew Paton, acting on behalf of the applicant at 1050 Brock Rd., and Sam Martin, senior pastor at Safe Haven Worship Centre. Only one of the two locations can get the last body rub parlour licenses in Pickering. While the legal issues play out, Pickering Spa has submitted its license application to the City. PICKERING — Police say they nabbed two scammers red-handed as they attempted to alter an automated teller machine in Pickering Saturday. Two people, one of them a youth, are facing more than 40 charges as a result of the sting. Durham police received a tip of suspicious activity around 3:30 p.m. Saturday at a Scotia Bank on Brock Road and fraud investi- gators responded. The investigators watched as sus- pects installed a card-reading device and a pinhole camera in the kiosk, police said. Cops closed in and nabbed the two suspects. Police allege the men were trying to unlawfully obtain debit card information and use it to produce counterfeit cards that could be used to steal money and make purchases. Olseksandr Gubarev, 20, of Dew- point Road in Thornhill faces allega- tions of fraud, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, breach of recog- nizance and other charges. A 17-year-old from Toronto also faces charges. Since the green bin program was launched Re- gion wide last July, complaints have been made that the approved bags leak, smell, decompose while still in the bin, attract bugs and are too ex- pensive. Uxbridge Councillor Susan Self said the major problem with the green bin system is the bags. “I have tried the bio bags myself and they are disgusting,” Coun. Self said. “I don’t find them acceptable bags.” Bags approved for use in the green bins are Biosak, BioBag, Bag to Earth paper bags, and Wal- Mart’s Great value. The Region requires residents to use 100 per cent biodegradable, completely compostable liner bags made from natural prod- ucts such as cornstarch. The Region’s works department staff said they recognize there is a problem with the bags. “We are going to take a look and see if we can find something a little more user-friendly,” said Cliff Curtis, commissioner of works. Mirka Januszkiewicz, the Region’s director of waste management services, said she too has re- ceived a number of calls from residents regarding how unpleasant they find the bio bags. But she said it is likely one manufacturer will develop another generation of the bag. In the meantime, Mr. Curtis said he recom- mends people in areas other than Whitby and Oshawa, where it is prohibited, throw green bin material in loose. “It seems like we have created a market for one or two select companies,” Ajax Councillor Scott Crawford said. “There have got to be more out there... we need to make these available.” However the Region addresses the problems with the bags, the facility where the Region’s compost is processed requires the bags have no plastic in them. Al Ramsay, the site man- ager of Miller Waste’s compost facility on Squires Beach Road in Pickering, explained the reason only these bags are permitted. “The result with these bags is an unrestricted use compost,” Mr. Ramsay said. “By following this program, by the end you produce a marketable product.” Learning How to Save Money on Your Taxes H&R Block Tax Course Begins October 14 Th o usan d s of p e o p l e a re l e a rni ng t h e s k i lls o f in c o m e t a x p r e par a t ion fr o m H&R B lo c k an d a re t rainin g f o r c a reer s as i nc o m e tax p rep a rer s. A committee of five residents submitted a letter to the City of Pickering requesting permis- sion to work with the City in the investigation of establish- ing designated off-leash areas for dogs. The committee came to council recently to reiterate its request in person. “This isn’t a request to do anything other than to engage you into an investigation,” said Nicole Scarlett, adding the plan would be to come back in the new year with options. Ms. Scarlett said she got the idea when she rescued her newest dog and the committee officially formed in January as the City was launching its own Animal Services department. “If you don’t have places that are designated, people use any parkland,” she said in an inter- view. She added people who are not comfortable around dogs are then put in the posi- tion of coming in contact with off-leash animals. With designated, fenced areas, people will know to avoid them and responsible pet owners will have a place to take their dogs to get the exercise they need. It also helps make for better pets. “In order to have a healthy animal that is a good mem- ber of society – not barking or jumping up on people – it is important to have the animal socialized around people and other dogs,” Ms. Scarlett said. Lisa Martin agrees. She found out about the committee after her daughter called Animal Services recently. She wanted to get involved because she has three dalmatians, so she knows the importance of exercise for pets. “I walk my dogs every day and we do need something in Pickering. The closest (off- leash park) is in Ajax. There are enough parks and conservation areas in the area (that some could be off-leash),” she said. Ms. Martin gave the example of the Petticoat Creek Conser- vation Area, which she said is under utilized in the colder months. “There are areas in Pickering that are not utilized to their full potential and they could be if part of them were designated off-leash,” While she does a lot with her active pets, they still need room to run. “They still require daily exer- cise, not to mention that I do, too,” Ms. Martin said. Ms. Scarlett said the com- mittee has begun studying how other jurisdictions have han- dled the issue and she said off- leash parks are quite common in other cities, with Toronto having 32 as of last December. Vancouver has 30 and Calgary has 66. She said the committee would help investigate what areas would be suitable, make recommendations on how to maintain the park, and how to have minimum environmental damage. “All of us, we’re very inter- ested in our dogs and in what’s best for them and what’s best for the community,” Ms. Martin said. She added they understand there are issues associated with this, but they believe they can be addressed. One issue is li- ability, which Ms. Martin said has been overcome in other municipalities as there are so many of these areas. The letter was referred to the clerk. Pickering pet owners looking for an of f-leash park to walk Fido and Fefe Durham College, UOIT likely to invite group to share thoughts and concerns By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer DURHAM — A task force on Muslim student needs will like- ly draw the interest of Durham’s post-secondary schools. Created by the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), the task force may be invited to visit Durham College and the University of Ontario Insti- tute of Technology, said Evan Muller-Cheng, student associa- tion president. The 10-person group is travelling to campuses across the province to receive statements on the experiences of Muslims for a report to be published March 21, the Inter- national Day to End Racism. “We’re not a member of the CFS, but I do support some of the initiatives they’re doing,” said Mr. Muller-Cheng. He said he hasn’t heard any complaints or issues raised by Muslim students during the couple of years he’s been at the campus, but he keeps in touch with other schools and is aware of the challenges some experi- ence. According to the CFS, the task force initiative came forth because of uneven adequate prayer space and institutional progress across Ontario. The group’s recommendations will surround improved responsive- ness to the Muslim community and the issue of Islamophobia on campus. “I think we’ll be looking into (inviting the task force) as a proactive measure,” said Mr. Muller-Cheng, and added the campus’ Muslim Student As- sociation would be consulted first. Muhannad Alghoul, past president of the Muslim Stu- dent Association for Durham’s campus, said his experiences so far have been “smooth,” es- pecially with administration. If something needed by Mus- lim students has been missing, it’s usually because adminis- tration doesn’t know the need exists, said Mr. Alghoul. For example, he said more students of diverse faiths began attending the campus when the UOIT opened. Mr. Alghoul said the students noticed there wasn’t enough space in the existing prayer room and within a month of mentioning it to administra- tion, they were given a bigger area. The Muslim Student Asso- ciation also has had good re- lationships with other campus associations and students in general. “We’ve never experienced any feelings of Islamophobia,” he said. Mr. Alghoul added they may have good relationships be- cause they’re pretty new and have no past feelings or rela- tionships to have sparked nega- tivity. Although things are smooth now, Mr. Alghoul said he’s also aware they could change - as they have at other schools with the introduction of new presi- dents and the elimination of prayer space and ratified reli- gious clubs. He said he would welcome having the task force visit the school as a proactive measure. Mr. Muller-Cheng said the Durham campus has a signifi- cantly diverse population and one of the things it does is focus on inclusion through events such as a faith mosaic, which illustrates a day in the life of another student. PA GE A6 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ OCTOBER 4, 2006P I t occurred to me, the other day, as I was handing over my first-born child to a smil- ing man in glasses, how crip- plingly insured I am. I have insurance for my car, my home, my mortgage, my fi- nances, my health, my spouse’s health, my children’s health, my teeth, my family’s teeth and probably the dog’s teeth. I may even have insurance on my in- surance. I’ve no way of telling any more, it’s all gotten so out of hand. I could have much more insurance too, if I could afford it. These days you can insure virtually anything. And you’re encouraged to. Want to make sure your wife’s new boob job stays perkier well into her 80s than a couple of Dalmatian puppies? Done. Pregnant? Worried the kid will have your father-in-law’s taxi- cab ears? No sweat. If you’ve got the cash, we’ve got the policy. One of my personal favou- rites is the “extended warranty,” where the same salesman who just spent 30 minutes convinc- ing you that this computer is without a doubt the very finest, most reliable machine on the planet, now, as he rings up the sale, feels compelled to advise you to purchase a little $500 safety net. Because you never can tell with these models. We are the most insanely se- cure people to ever walk the earth. The flip side, of course, is that we are also the most fearful. We’re terrified of everything. We have had it drummed into our aching heads from birth that ca- tastrophe, failure and financial ruin lurk just around every cor- ner, that all of us are only a car ride or a Styrofoam cup of cof- fee away from permanent injury and that any child playing out of sight for more than 30 seconds may as well be on the back of a milk carton. Good lord, why don’t we all just slash our wrists right now and be done with it? The industry of fear is thriv- ing. It’s a good thing that, in 1893, Frederick Jackson Turner declared the North American frontier closed, because quite frankly, nobody can afford to go looking anymore. The Pinta, the Nina and the Santa Maria never would’ve left the dock had they existed today. Do you think Lewis and Clark stopped by “Oregon Mutual” before heading out across the continent just to cover their as- sets? Do you suppose Magellan was granted the helm of the Victoria only as long as his 16- year-old son didn’t drive? No. There was, there used to be, a thing called “risk.” Attached to that thing called risk there were two other marvellous and now virtually extinct commodi- ties: personal responsibility and courage. Back in the days when a kid could fall off his bike and his numb-nut parents wouldn’t launch a class-action suit against the earth’s gravitational field. I’m not idiot enough to think that there is no merit in insur- ance. It has its place and God knows I’ve been helped by it on numerous occasions. But it’s dawning on me that we have become a generation of wimps. People so pummelled and bruised by frightening head- lines, sound bytes and unimag- inably stupid court decisions that we are afraid to go outside our own homes without the condom of insurance wrapped firmly around us. A fitting gar- ment considering how badly we’ve screwed things up. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Neil Crone enter laughing EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com LETTERS TO THE EDITOR /4& Maybe trustee raises should go to the kids To the editor: Now that school has resumed, so have the constant requests for additional monies from the schools. Whether it be for text- books, special events such as Scientists in the School or fund- raising for what I would con- sider classroom basics like white boards and dry erase markers, the handouts have begun. I accept that parents must pay for their children to attend school but is a $15 agenda book really necessary and if a math work book is a required part of the provincial testing program, should not this work book be covered by the provincial bud- get? Growing up in Oshawa, I re- member my parents fundraising for extra events like trips and visits to the Science Centre. Cer- tainly the provincial coffers are not so empty that students must pay for the desk, the chalk and the chalk board? Recently, your newspaper published an article regard- ing increases to school board trustee salaries. Under the Har- ris government these salaries were slashed to $5,000 per year and were made part-time em- ployment. Now, it seems there is a movement to increase these salaries by $11,000 per year. If the Province or the local school boards have the means to add this wage increase to the trustees, surely they could see that these funds would be far better spent on the children. Sonja Beggs Oshawa CHIP great to help heart To the editor: Re: CHIP aims to reverse dis- ease with a knife and fork, Sept. 27 As a nursing student, I am delighted to see the Coronary Health Improvement Program (CHIP) starting in Oshawa. The article recommends the program to people who currently suffer from coronary diseases or belong to a high-risk category. However, I would like to ex- tend the invitation to the rest of the population, as prevention is better than treating an illness. Wide-spread diseases that affect our society are chronic in nature. Chronic diseases develop over time and may or may not show symptoms. Our modern lifestyle consists of high stress and demanding schedules. This leaves too lit- tle time to plan a healthy diet, regular exercise and recreation- al activities. The lack of these preventive measures can cause higher risks of obesity, diabe- tes and high blood pressure. Chronic high blood pressure, for example, was found to lead to heart attacks, kidney disease and stroke. From a personal perspective, since June 2006, I became in- stantly more aware of informa- tion on heart health and disease when an alarming event took place. My 35-year-old friend, who exercises regularly, unex- pectedly had a heart attack. After spending hours at the intensive care unit, tests showed results of high cholesterol. Since chronic diseases can affect people of any age, gender, and ethnicity, I strongly encourage disease pre- vention programs. Chantal Marceau Oshawa Contribute to easing hunger pains W hen you’re out this week doing last-minute shop- ping to make sure that Thanksgiving Day table is fully stocked with all the fixings, spare a thought for your hungry neighbours in need. We’re about to hit that first key date of the food-bank calendar after a long summer -- the others being Christmas and Easter -- and the urgent need for non-perishable food is as keen as ever. Food contributions are always necessary of course as the need to eat doesn’t depend upon the season, but an extra effort to make sure all are taken care of hits hard at this time of year. Plenty of “working poor” in addition to those on social as- sistance require the kind of targeted help only a food bank pro- vides to get them through the month. In Durham Region alone, there are 16 food banks. Food bank workers push hard to make sure nobody has to go without. But they can only succeed with the help of the many thousands of fortunate people who can spare an extra bag or two of groceries per month. It’s especially tough when young and old alike have visions of golden, stuffed turkeys; creamy mashed potatoes; hot steaming gravy and warm pumpkin pie dancing through their heads at this time of year. Yo u can help an awful lot by picking up a few extra badly needed items when you shop this week. Pasta and pasta sauce are always in demand. Also look at hot and cold cereal, canned fruits and vegetables, canned soups, pastas and beans. Baby formula and baby food is also needed as well as salt and pepper, peanut butter and other spreads. Over the last 11 years, the Daily Bread Food Bank reports that GTA food bank usage has gone up by 79 per cent. Many of those going hungry are young children, who most need the nourish- ment a proper diet provides. It is unfortunate and unconscionable that, in Canada, one of the world’s wealthiest countries, so many go without on a regu- lar basis. As World Food Day comes upon us -- it’s Oct. 16 -- it’s a re- minder that we must help out where we can, when we can, to help fulfil this most basic human need. Search out opportunities in your community to help solve the problem and remember that every little bit helps. This Week’s Question: Which Canadian NHL team do you think will have the best season? PA GE B1 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ October 4, 2006 P Panthers leave Winder wanting Pickering juniors rain on former coach’s Ajax debut, win third in a row with shutout over North York Sunday By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — It was just another game. According to Attack head coach John Winder, making his debut with the Attack against his former club, and Pickering Panthers bench boss Pat Cur- cio, who replaced Winder two weeks ago, there was nothing personal on the line in Friday’s first matchup of the sea- son between the two OHA Ontario Pro- vincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League clubs at the Pickering Recreation Complex. That may be so, but the rivalry be- tween the two neighbouring junior teams appears to be back on a solid footing after two years of less-than-steller Ajax teams mak- ing the match- ups between the two teams anti- climatic. Friday’s contest showed that Ajax (3-7-0- 0, tied for eighth in South Confer- ence standings), w ith Winder on the bench, has apparently turned the cor- ner from bottom feeders for the past two seasons into a team that’s poised for a bet- ter year. The Ajacians gave the Pan- thers everything they could handle in a fast-paced, wide-open contest, with untimely Ajax penalties ultimately de- ciding the game in Pickering’s favour, 6-4. Two nights later, the Panthers (5-4- 0-0, tied for fourth in South Confer- ence standings) made it a 2-for-2 for the weekend, scoring a 5-0 win over the North York Rangers in Toronto on Sunday night. The win over the Rang- ers represented the Panthers third in a row. The Pickering juniors rode a strong goaltending performance from Marc Stuart, who earned the shutout after stopping 27 North York shots. The Panthers played in Collingwood against the Blues on Tuesday night. The result wasn’t available at press time. For Curcio, he downplayed Friday’s game featuring his former head coach behind the opposing bench, saying it was more about keeping his own play- ers focused on the task at hand. “I have all the respect in the world for John. But, that wasn’t an issue for us tonight. We didn’t care who was on the bench, who we were playing against, we just wanted to focus on what we had to do to win and we did,” says Curcio. Similarly, Winder was nonplused about facing his former team, although he did allow that he would have much rather faced any other team in his head coaching debut with Ajax. “To be honest, I would have liked to have started against someone else, but it was right into the fire,” notes Winder. “A s a player and coach after you’ve played enough games, after you’ve played the first couple of shifts, they’re all the same.” Panthers’ captain Richard Schofield says the game against their former coach was in their minds before the games. But, in the end, it all boiled down to getting a win. “You never want to think about it too much. You like to win, but you like to see (Winder) do well. At the end of the night, it’s another win for us. That’s why you play the game.” Meanwhile, Ajax’s Craig McDonald says making Winder a winner in his coaching debut against his former team was in the back of everyone’s mind heading into the contest. “We want- ed to win for Mr. Winder. We knew he wanted this one bad, so it’s too bad we lost,” says McDonald. Curcio tipped his hat to the Ajacians, noting that Winder’s crew started the contest with much more intensity than the Panthers did. But, thanks to vet- eran leadership, the Panthers turned it around in the second period, outscor- ing Ajax 4-1 in the frame, including a back-breaking 5-on-3 power-play goal by defenceman Zack Fenwick with 55 seconds remaining. Winder says penalties played a role in the loss to Pickering, including al- lowing the Panthers a two-man ad- vantage late in the second period that enabled the Panthers to open up a two- goal lead heading into the final frame. “It hurt us for sure,” says Winder. “When you give a team as talented as that a two-man advantage, they’re going to put the puck in the net.” The Panthers host the Toronto Ju- nior Canadians (formerly the Wexford Raiders) at the Pickering Recreation Complex on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Pat Curcio Richard Schofield Jason Liebregts /News Advertiser photo Ajax Attack’s Peter Drikos, left, and Pickering Panthers’ Brad Fleishman battle for the puck during OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League action at the Pickering Recreation Complex Friday night. Panthers’ Postscript The OHA Ontario Provincial Ju- nior ‘A’ Hockey League’s board of governors is set to vote on whether to proceed with a four-man officiating team (two referees, two linesmen), which was in place dur- ing the Governors’ Showcase in Bowmanville recently. Apparently, the three junior ‘B’ leagues in the province are using the four-man of- ficiating system. To date, the new officiating system hasn’t received majority support among the OPJAHL owners... The injury bug has bit- ten in Panther land, as defenceman Kevin Huinink is out a minimum of four weeks with a broken jaw... Newcomer Josh Booth, acquired in a trade from Collingwood, is out for four weeks with a fractured elbow... Cory Batista will be sidelined for about two weeks after receiving 50 stitches recently... The Panthers have rescheduled their Car Wash for Cancer to this Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pickering Boston Pizza at Hwy. 2 and Brock Road. The event was postponed last Saturday due to in- clement weather. DurhamDurham Daily News For more on this story, view the Oct. 2 webcast of Are you ready for some football? Laura Barnes named to Canadian junior squad headed to Hawaii PICKERING — A Pickering swimmer has earned the right to compete against the best young swimmers in the world in Hawaii early next year. Swimming Canada announced Monday that Laura Barnes has earned a spot on the Junior National Team scheduled to compete at the 2007 Junior Pan Pacific Champi- onships in Kihei, Hawaii in Janu- ary. The Junior Pan Pacific swimming championships features the top junior swimmers from Canada, U.S., Australia and Japan. Barnes, 18, a Dunbarton High School student who trains with the Scarbor- ough Swim Club, earned the spot in the 200-metre breaststroke event at the recent Pan Pacific trials in Montreal. She was half a body length behind at the 100-metre mark and had to battle to se- cure her spot on the team. She showed incredible mental and physical strength by pulling ahead in the last four metres of the race. Scarborough Swim Club Head Coach Sylvain Pineau said, “Laura persevered through the whole season to peak at this moment when it counted most. She is a tough competitor.” Pierre Lafontaine, CEO and National Coach of Swimming Canada, said, “We are really thrilled about the team which will represent Canada on the interna- tional stage. One of Swimming Canada’s goals is to provide the best opportuni- ties to future stars and support them leading up to Beijing 2008 and London 2012.” Before travelling to Hawaii, Laura will attend the U.S. Open in November at Purdue University in Indiana, to gain additional international experience. Society brings swords, armour and fighting to Oshawa; group meets on Mondays in Ajax DURHAM — On Thanksgiving weekend, you can take a trip back to the Middle Ages. The Northview branch of Oshawa Public Library is hosting Joust in Time on Oct. 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with demonstrations by the local branch of the Society for Creative Anachro- nisms. “It’s a taste of medieval life,” said Marc Lapointe, head of the branch. “It’s a great way for kids or anyone to see what things were like.” Ky le Andrews, of Ardchreag, the Dur- ham-Scarborough SCA chapter, said about 20 to 30 members are scheduled to take part in the event. There will be several tournament events, featur- ing sword fights (with wooden swords) between combatants wearing armour and clothing in the medieval style. There will also be demonstrations of medieval arts, including metal work- ing and knitting. There will also be interactive seg- ments to the demonstrations and chances for the public to talk with participants, he said. Andrews said the members make their own outfits, as much as possible, and try to be as accurate as possible. The library branch held a similar event in 2005 and found it was very popular, Lapointe said. There’s no admission for the event which will be held outside the library, located at Beatrice Street and Ritson Road. The probable rain date is Oct. 14. But in case of rain, check with the library at 905-576-6040. Ardcjreag members meet Monday nights in Ajax for meetings and prac- tice fights. The Pickering club won by a comfortable margin during the day-long match, scoring 229 runs to 124 for the Cambridge side. Pickering atoms work ove r time for title Panthers edge Stoney Creek for season-opening Peterborough crown PICKERING — The Pickering Pan- thers minor atom ‘AA’ rep hockey team kicked off a brand new season with a thrilling win at the Peterborough Na- tionals’ tournament last weekend. The never-say-die Panther minor atoms capped the tournament with a thrilling 1-0 overtime win against a talented Stoney Creek squad. The two evenly-matched teams skated up and down the ice at Evin- rude Centre arena, creating several scoring chances on either side, but spectacular work from Pickering goal- tenders Ian Bull and Chad Robbins kept the game scoreless in regulation time. In overtime, Pickering forward James Burke stitched a pass through several legs into the slot where Quinn Wilson wasted no time in blasting it past the Stoney Creek netminder for the win. Forward Andrew Jegg also as- sisted on the game-winning goal. In the semifinal, Pickering registered a 3-2 overtime victory over Uxbridge. Brandon Willcocks provided all the thrills in overtime with a goal-scoring rush from Pickering’s end. The goal, Willcocks’s first as a rep player, sealed the deal and sent Pickering to the final against Stoney Creek. Wilson and Jeffrey Christensen also scored, with assists to Cody White, Jacob Houston and Jegg. Pickering opened the tournament with a 3-3 tie against Brampton. Though leading 3-0 through most of the game, Pickering saw its lead quickly disappear when Brampton capitalized on some late chances. Kyle Spataro, Jegg and Michael Capano scored, with assists to Jegg with two, Sam Auer, Burke, Wilson and Christo- pher Lowery. In Game 2, Pickering squeaked by a tough Oshawa team 2-1. Auer netted both Panthers’ goals. Spataro earned an assist. Pickering edged host Peterborough 5-4 in Game 3 in another tightly-con- tested match. Jegg scored twice, Wil- son, Luke Lamanna and Houston each added a goal. Wilson recorded three assists, Christensen, Capano, Low- ery and Brandon Willcocks had one apiece. The Peterborough tourney rep- resented a great start to the season for the minor atoms, which open the 2006 regular-season campaign with a home game Sunday, Oct. 1 at Don Beer Arena against Uxbridge. Te am members are Ian Bull, Chad Robbins, Sam Auer, Michael Capano, Andrew Jegg, James Burke, Neil Tka- chuk, Jacob Houston, Justin Bowie, Brandon Willcocks, Jeffrey Chris- tensen, Franki Tsiampas, Cody White, Christopher Lowery, Luke Lamanna, Quinn Wilson and Kyle Spataro. Mike Wilson coaches the team, as- sisted by Kevin Tkachuk, Joe Capano and Stephen White. The trainer is Jason Willcocks and the team man- ager is Cheryl Robbins. photo submitted The Pickering Panthers minor atom ‘AA’ rep hockey team captured the tournament title at the recent Peterborough Nationals Tournament.
