Frenchman’s Bay
Yacht Club launches
first phase of program
By Danielle Milley
Staff Writer
PICKERING — Daniel Scott has
spent two weeks learning the basics
of sailing -- and he’s now an expert
in how to capsize.
“I’ve learned how to capsize be-
cause I did that five times,” he joked
at the Frenchman’s Bay Yacht Club
on Aug. 9.He’s also learned how to
steer a bit and do other tasks associ-
ated with sailing.
The 14-year-old Ajax resident has
been having fun learning the new
skills and finds it relaxing spending
time outside and on the water.
Daniel is one of the children able
to participate in a summer day pro-
gram at the club because of a grant
from the Trillium Foundation and
a partnership with Reach for the
Rainbow that allows children with
special needs to enjoy the same ac-
tivities any other child can. He has
asperger’s and ADD.
His mother Ann Scott said they’ve
tried other organized sports, but
there are few leagues that work for
Daniel.
“They don’t accommodate a child
with special needs,” she said.
Ms. Scott said the experience has
been such a positive one for Dan-
iel that she will definitely tell other
parents about it. She said it can be
a lot of work to find a program that
is suitable for special-needs chil-

Men use crowbar to
extensively damage
home and car
PICKERING — A Pickering
couple was dealing with a long
list of damaged property after
a run-in with crowbar-wielding
criminals in the early hours of
Friday morning.
The male homeowner on
Heathside Crescent arrived home
from work around 1:30 a.m. to
see a suspicious vehicle with two
males inside circling the block.
He confronted the suspects and
when they didn’t respond to him,
he told them he was going to call
police.
They then approached him
with a crowbar and he returned
to his residence to call police.
The suspects drove to the end
of the street before returning
to the man’s house, where one
suspect proceeded to smash the
windows and taillights of the car
parked in the driveway and then
walked up to the homeowner’s
front porch, where he used the
crowbar to smash the screen
door and front door, reports Dur-
ham Regional Police.
The second suspect then drove
the car into the homeowner’s
parked vehicle and pushed it
onto the front steps, which were
damaged.
The suspect then drove into
the homeowner’s vehicle that
was parked on the street and
damaged the hood and the pas-
senger side headlight.
Both suspects fled the scene
before the police arrived. They
are described as two white males
in their early 20s.
Police are looking for the four-
door, grey, 2002 Volkswagen they
were driving with the licence
plate AXAK713.
Anyone with information
about the incident is asked to call
the Ajax Pickering Community
Police Office at 905-683-9100 ext.
2531.

a new deck with a railing to

Future phases include an

the FBYC received guidance

counsellors work one-on-

youth will have participated
in the program by the end of
the summer.
Reach for the Rainbow is

physical disabilities across
Ontario. By working with its
partners, it is able to provide

Elyse Goodall and her
13-year-old daughter Adria
James were referred to the
program by the charity,
“When I heard about the
sailing I thought it was new
and exciting and I always
want my daughter to do
something new,” she said.
Adria has a neuromuscu-
lar disorder that slows down
her mobility and speech. Ms.
Goodall said the counsellors
were accommodating and
worked well with her daugh-
ter. “(The program) gave
her some new skills that she
wouldn’t otherwise be able
to gain,” she said. “Something
she can do to fit in.”

PICKERING — Police have

involved in an accident last
weekend that sent a senior
to hospital with serious inju-
ries.
Durham police were called
to investigate a two-car crash
at the intersection of Taunton
and Altona roads around
10:40 a.m. Aug. 6. Police said
a Honda had run a red light
and collided with another
car, leaving a 76-year-old Ajax
man with serious injuries.
Police have now charged
21-year-old Jane Robinson
of Canso Drive in Claremont
with dangerous driving caus-

Vir us found in
Oshawa and Ajax
By Erin Hatfield
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Oshawa and
Ajax are home to batches
of mosquitoes carrying the
West Nile virus, the Region
has confirmed.
Durham Region’s health
department on Aug. 8 re-
ported that two pools of
mosquitoes, one in Ajax
and the other from Oshawa,
were carrying the virus. The
batches had been sent for
testing on Aug. 2.
These are the first mos-
quitoes in Durham to test
positive for the West Nile
virus this season.
The Region confirmed
the season’s first case of the
virus in a bird on Aug. 1,
when a crow picked up in
Oshawa tested positive. At
that time, Laura Freeland,
a senior public health in-
spector with the Region’s
West Nile program, said the
virus in mosquitoes often
followed confirmation in
birds.
“It is to be expected we
would find, two or three
weeks following the posi-
tive test of a bird, that then
we would find it in mosqui-
toes,” Ms. Freeman said.
West Nile is a mosquito-
borne virus that cycles be-
tween birds and mosqui-
toes, Ms. Freeman explained
in the earlier interview. It is
spread to humans through
the bite of an infected mos-
quito.
Feeding on the blood of
a bird carrying the virus in-
fects mosquitoes and can
then be passed onto hu-
mans through mosquito
bites.
The Province continues
to report no human cases of
We st Nile so far this season.
However, the health depart-
ment urges residents to take
precautions to minimize the
risk of mosquito bites, in-
cluding avoiding high mos-
quito populations, using
repellent containing DEET,
wearing light-coloured
clothing, and getting rid of
stagnant water around the
outside of the home to help
eliminate breeding sites.
For more information on
West Nile or to report sight-
ings of dead crows, blue jays
or raptors, call the health
department’s environmen-
tal help line at 905-723-
3818 or 1-888-777-9613, ext.
2188. Sightings can also be
reported online at www.re-

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
We can all help in
f ight against AIDS
Gates donation a huge boost, but UN
Envoy Lewis slams Canada for not
coming through with needed drugs
W hat will half-a-billion buy you today?
Those in charge of fighting the growing AIDS epi-
demic in Africa are about to find out.
That’s because the world’s richest man, who also dou-
bles as the world’s biggest philanthropist, has just made a
$500 million donation over five years to battle AIDS as well
as tuberculosis and malaria.
Bill Gates, who spent the first half of his life amassing
a software fortune and now would appear to be spend-
ing the second half of his life giving much of it away, has
sparked tremendous interest in the International AIDS
conference.
The 16th annual event kicks off today in Toronto and
runs until Friday. It features 24,000 scientists and activists
-- among them Mr. Gates and his wife Melinda as well as
former U.S. president Bill Clinton -- who will come to the
GTA.
It will also involve members of the AIDS Committee
of Durham Region, a group of hard-working people who
have done everything they can to deal with the disease
here in the region.
The gift from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is
a real boost in the battle against AIDS. At the same time,
Stephen Lewis, the Canadian who has been on the front
lines in the battle against the disease as United Nations
envoy on AIDS, has made clear his disappointment in the
worldwide response to Africa’s troubles.
Mr. Lewis particularly singled out his own country for
being “delinquent,” in its approach to supplying badly
needed AIDS drugs to Africa.
Under a program the former Liberal federal government
signed off on, millions of dollars of generic AIDS medica-
tion was supposed to flow to Africa.
But Mr. Lewis said that after years of inaction, not one
pill has reached the continent.
That’s why the theme of this year’s conference, ‘Time to
Deliver,’ is an appropriate message.
Talk is cheap and what is clearly needed is action.
Mr. Gates has certainly put his money where his mouth
is and it’s time for governments around the world to do
their part in battling an epidemic that kills millions every
year in Africa.
Column sends contradictory message
To the editor:
Re: ‘John and the denizens of darkness,’ Jeff Mitchell column,
Aug. 6.
Isn’t it hypocritical, or at least ethically inconsistent, to edi-
torialize about the evils of prostitution while your otherwise
fine publication accepts money for ads from escort services
and massage parlours?
Could Mr. Mitchell have saved himself some time and in-
vestigatory effort by hanging out in the classifieds section of
the News Advertiser rather than at King and Simcoe streets in
Oshawa?

Billy Smith’s biggest
success is inspiring
S itting at a book table inside St. Paul’s
on the Hill Anglican Church, faith
healer Billy Smith is easy to iden-
tify.
A big Texan dressed in a plaid red shirt
and black pants, his cowboy hat nearby,
Mr. Smith looks the same, but less suspi-
cious, than the suit-and-tie picture on his
website.
While visiting Pickering and the Church
Without Limits, Mr. Smith happily accept-
ed a request to demonstrate his abilities
on News Advertiser student Alistair Lowe,
who suffers from chronic back pain.
“You’ll see some things here you’ve
never seen before; if you don’t, I’ll buy
you lunch,” says Mr. Smith, sitting up-
stairs in a hot and dimly lit area of the
church, more private than the hallway
below.
During the interview, he speaks loudly,
but gently, over the passionate singing
blasting from the church’s chapel as peo-
ple prepare for his service.
He’s pretty confident for a man who
undoubtedly faces skeptics everyday, es-
pecially since his own story includes get-
ting his head crushed by a car and having
God miraculously fix him in front of doc-
tors’ eyes.
While watching his healing service,
there are other questionable claims and
events that occur, such as his leg-growing
procedure.
Mr. Smith says most chronic back pain
is caused by having one leg shorter than
the other or a crooked spine.
To verify his statement, he asks if a
nurse or doctor is in the audience and
sure enough, a woman in uniform comes
forth.
Mr. Smith asks for people with back
pain to come forward and one by one,
they sit in a chair in front of him, put their
feet in his lap and let them relax and fall
open to the sides. With a camera captur-
ing all the miracles on a big screen, he
shows people one foot is shorter. Slowly,
he looks them in the eye and talks to them
while turning their feet inward so their
toes face upwards and their foot looks
longer -- more likely the work of percep-
tion rather than God.
For Mr. Lowe’s healing, he admits he
felt a difference at first, but suspects it
was a result of Mr. Smith’s slight tugging
on his legs. According to Mr. Lowe, it’s a
technique he’s received in therapy.
But others claim Mr. Smith’s healing
hands made them feel better than they
have in years, and maybe they did.
Although the authenticity of Mr. Smith’s
claims are debatable, his gifts are unique.
If nothing else, he is able to get people
to like him so much, they want to believe
and are inspired as a result, which is a
great success in itself.

OF ALL AGES
Stress has become the number one
malady of our time. The constant pressure
associated with living in a fast-paced
world has created an environment where
almost everyone is suffering to some
degree from excessive stress. The effects
on our health, productivity and quality
of life are devastating--more devastating
than people have realized. Some common
early signs of stress include; irritability,
headaches, digestive problems, pain in
neck and shoulders, dizziness and raised
blood pressure. With prolonged or regular
overstress, these can lead to or develop
into conditions that are more serious.
Because the mind and body deeply affect
each other, too much stress also affects us
mentally and emotionally. Some of the
emotional and behavioural changes we can
experience include a change in the way we
relate to other people. For example, people
can become more depressed, withdrawn,
and not able to listen to others or be less

sensitive towards others. Emotions like
anxiety, anger, and frustration can become
heightened.
Many people have simply adapted to
stress in an unhealthy way, resigned to
thinking it’s “just the way it is.” However,
adapting to stress and unmanaged stress
have created a pandemic of low-grade
anxiety and depression as well as the
physical symptoms mentioned previously.
Managing your stress so that it doesn’t
negatively affect your health can be learned
through a program called Mindfulness-
Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) originally
developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. at
UMass Medical Center. This program is
designed for people who want to mobilize
their own inner resources of mind and
body and take charge of their health and
lives.
Anne Dranitsaris. Ph.D. is a clinical
psychotherapist in private practice in
Pickering. She works with individuals and
groups using Mindfulness-Based approaches
for treatment of stress-related problems,
depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.
She will be conducting a Free Introductory
Seminar, Monday, August 21st at 6:30 pm
on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
. For more information about upcoming
MBSR programs, contact the Centre for
Mindful Therapies at 905.509.7790 or visit
www.mindfultherapies.com.
Free Stress Reduction Seminar
Monday, August 21st, 2006 6:30 to 8:00 pm
1780 Altona Road, Pickering
Are you are experiencing intense stress right now? Do you have a challenging job with a punishing
workload, intense demands and unrealistic deadlines? Or does juggling the demands of work and home life
just keep piling on the pressure? Maybe relationship problems are making your life a misery, or perhaps you
are just not getting the support you need?
While most people realize that stress is a part of their lives, few take time to think about the consequences.
Stress, which has physical, emotional and mental ramifi cations, has been linked with medical or emotional
problems such as hypertension, heart disease, PMS, headache, IBS, cancer, diabetes, panic, anxiety,
depression, to name a few.
Join us at our Free Introductory Seminar and learn more about an approach that leads to responding to stress
more effectively. The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, originally developed by Jon
Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center teaches you how to use your own inner
resources for growing, healing, and taking charge in your life.

Derek Langlois, second from left, stands tall on the podium as the under-17 Canadian Juvenile Judo Champion at the event in Leth-
bridge, Alberta. He hopes to represent Canada at the 2012 Olympic games.
Langlois has Olympic-sized aspirations
Ajax club member
captures Canadian title
By Shawn Cayley
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Every time Derek Lan-
glois steps onto a judo mat, at first glance,
he appears at a disadvantage.
Being 14-years-old and matched up
against competitors three and four years
his senior tends to give off that effect,
says Karl Doherty, one of his coaches.
However, his drive, determination and
dedication to the sport has allowed him
to advance through the ranks with rela-
tive ease en route to becoming the under
17 Canadian Juvenile Judo Champion.
“Derek, he is the next big superstar,
no doubt about it,” said Karl Doherty
of Langlois, who competed in the 42-
kilogram division and bested Alexandre
Di Bartolo of Quebec for the gold. “He
struggled a little when he got bigger, but
now, he just kills everyone.”
Langlois was considerably more hum-
ble when asked about his accomplish-
ment, which occurred recently in Leth-
bridge, Alberta.
“It was weird at first,” he says, describ-
ing the feeling right after winning gold.
“A fter I won I was kind of all out of it and
I didn’t really know what had happened
when it was over. But now, looking back,
I know what happened.”
What happened was Langlois ham-
mering down yet another opponent, this
time at the national level. With that in
mind, both athlete and coach have their
eyes set on a much larger prize.
“To the Olympics in 2012,” says Lan-
glois, who travelled to Germany earlier
this year for a tournament.
Doherty says there is every reason
to believe Langlois can advance to that
level within six years time, based solely
on his desire to be the best.
“Derek is a very athletic kid, he has
been doing judo now since he was about
four or five years old and he has always
been the best at whatever sport he did,”
explains Doherty, whose brother Kevin,
a former Olympic athlete, also coaches
Langlois at the Ajax Budokan club. “This
kid knows exactly what he wants to do.
He will not miss a practice or cheat on
an exercise. I don’t even see this out of
Olympians. The drive he has is incred-
ible.”
If Langlois stays on course, Doherty
could soon see that in an Olympian.
Like most successful athletes, Langlois
has a great support system behind him
in his mother and father, along with his
younger brother, who is also involved in
judo.
“They are great,” says Doherty of Lan-
glois’ family. “That allows him to reach
whatever potential he is going to reach.”
While also giving credit to his family,
Langlois was quick to praise the work of
the Doherty brothers. “Karl and Kevin,
I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for
those two,” he admits.
“They have helped me so much in be-
coming successful at this level. I train six
or seven times a week when I’m getting
ready for a tournament and they are right
there.”
Growing up, Langlois has enjoyed
playing hockey, ball hockey, lacrosse
and soccer, but it’s been his dedication
to judo that turned him into a Canadian
champion.
Rock down two , need sweep to claim title
DURHAM — A big hole got even
deeper for the Ajax-Pickering Rock on
Thursday.
The Rock was down 2-0 in its best-of-
five championship with the Wellington
Aces entering Game 3 of the OLA senior
‘B’ lacrosse league series last night, Aug.
12, at the Pickering Recreation Complex.
The result was not known at press dead-
line. If the Rock won, Game 4 is tonight
in Elora.
If necessary, Game 5 is Tuesday at the
recreation complex, starting at 8:30 p.m.
On Thursday, the Rock fell 7-3. Mark
Craig, Tony Henderson and Mike Daley
scored.
“Our backs to the wall. We need to be
better offensively. You don’t win games
scoring three goals,” coach Paul St. John
said.
“We have to win the first period. I’ve
watched Wellington enough and I know
they don’t like to play from behind.
“We haven’t been able to get a lead.
We gotta get the first goal.”
He added his team has given up
power-play goals early in the first period
of both games and hasn’t been able to
overcome the obstacle. Falling behind is
“a big hurdle”, he said.
Despite being down two games, St.
John was still confident his team can
prevail.
“I know my team,” he stated, pointing
out the Rock went through a four-game
losing streak during the regular season,
but snapped out of that to go on a nine-
game winning streak. “So, I know we can
do it.”
On a sad note, St. John noted the Rock
are wearing black arm bands in memory
of Don Swindells, one of the founders of
the West Durham Lacrosse Association.
Swindells passed away from cancer last
week.
“I knew him quite well. He brought
(West Durham lacrosse) to where it is.
He was a terrific guy and great friend.”

Durham Windows and Doors
Brings Mobile Showroom
To Your Door
Wayne Hutchison brings to the
replacement window and door busi-
ness a new and long overdue feature.
It’s a Mobile Showroom which just
may be the only one in Canada.
“The day is gone when you car-
ried some brochures and a sample
window to a customer’s home,” ex-
plains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired
North York Mobile Library truck and
installed interior walls along with all
of my window samples.”
When you call Durham Win-
dows and Doors for a free estimate,
Wayne will show up at your door
with his Mobile Showroom which
you’ll enter by way of a sliding patio
door.
Inside, displayed on the walls,
are the Vinyl Window Designs series
of vinyl windows which you’re free
to operate and you’ll discover the
many special features including how
they can be cleaned without going
outside.
“After being in this business for
26 years, I can honestly say these are
the fi nest windows on the market,”
says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed
to reduce air leakage and come with
heavy duty hardware.”
All Vinyl Window Designs win-
dows come with Low E Glass which
fi lters out the ultraviolet rays keeping
your home cooler in the summer and
eliminate fading of your curtains,
drapes and furniture.
All of the windows come with
a lifetime warranty on the frame,
hardware and glass.
Wa yne would also like his cus-
tomers to know that he does all of the
estimates personally, eliminating the
cost of a salesperson.
Durham Windows and Doors
also does all of its own installations,
which ensures that every customer
gets a high quality job done at the
best possible price.
Durham Windows and Doors is
located at 696 King St. W. in Osha-
wa. For more information call (905)
579-2222 or 1-888-576-8575.
