DURHAM — “O ne of the good
guys” and a driving force for la-
crosse in Ajax and Pickering has
passed away.
Don Swindells, 53, died of liver
cancer on Sunday, Aug. 6.
The Ajax resident was one of
the founding members of the West
Durham Minor Lacrosse Associa-
tion, which started play in 2001.
There are now about 500 boys and
girls playing house league and rep
lacrosse under the association’s
banner.
Mr. Swindells was in his second
year as the league’s president.
“Don Swindells was one of the
good guys, unwavering in his ef-
forts and passions to build our
lacrosse franchise in the Durham
region,” says David Lustgarten, a
director of the West Durham as-
sociation, in an e-mail.
“He was huge in lacrosse. He
was as dedicated to lacrosse as
he was to his family. It was unbe-
lievable. He was unwavering,” Mr.
Lustgarten added in an interview.

PICKERING — Pickering wants
to make city residents better pet
owners and keep everyone safe.
City council passed the Respon-
sible Pet Ownership Bylaw at the
July 24 meeting to go along with
the new Pickering Animal Servic-
es department that was created
Jan. 1. It replaces the old Cat and
Dog Bylaw that made reference to
the now defunct Pickering-Ajax-
Whitby Animal Services.
“We also found it had a lot of
areas that were inadequate,” said
Lindsey Brenner, supervisor of
animal services.
The bylaw covers a range of
areas, including the requirement
to register a pet every year by Jan.
31; not allowing animals to run at
large; and general requirements
such as not allowing an animal
to make noises that are likely to
disturb other residents.
New areas added to the bylaw
include a more descriptive defi-
nition of what constitutes a muz-
zle and a section on minimum
animal care aspects.
Ms. Brenner said normally that
is covered by the Humane So-
ciety, but they are usually over-
worked and can’t always get to
what would be considered more
minor incidents.
“We decided we would add
a section there to address easy
situations that we could handle,”
she said, adding criminal matters
would still be dealt with by the
Hu mane Society.
Minimal care requirements
include providing shelter if an
animal is kept outside, and pro-
viding food, water and veterinary
care.
To go with the new bylaw, an
animal services committee is
to be created comprised of one
member of council (Ward 2 Re-

The West
Durham
team dedicated the game to Mr.
Swindells and each player wore
a black arm band. West Durham
won 6-4.
Anne Nakasuji, secretary-trea-
surer with the association, says Mr.
Swindells was “a very kind man.
“He was a very tall gentleman,
but he was extremely gentle. He
was everybody’s friend.
“He cared passionately about
kids and lacrosse. He just wanted
to do the right thing. He went out
of his way to make sure everybody
had a positive experience.”
Mr. Swindells had been diag-
nosed with stomach cancer last
year and had his stomach re-
moved.
The association held its annual
We st Durham Rock Classic Tour-
nament at the end of June 2005,
not long after he had his surgery.
“He was at the tournament
for short bits of time. When he
got tired, he went home, but he
wanted to be there. Our reputation
with the Ontario Lacrosse Asso-
ciation was important to him,” Ms.
Nakasuji says.
“He’d lost a lot of weight, but he
came.”
Last week, he went into hos-
pital for an update and second
opinion on his condition. It was
then that doctors broke the bad
news. He went into palliative care
and passed away on Sunday, Ms.
Nakasuji states.
Mr. Swindells also worked secu-
rity at Ajax-Pickering Rock games,
which he did “strictly on a volun-
teer basis,” she says, adding Rock
players will be wearing black arm
bands for the rest of their season.
Mr. Swindells wife, Lynn,
served as the association’s regis-
trar. “Both did a lot of work for
Zone 6.”
Ms. Nakasuji says her husband,
Brian, coaches the bantam team
and “Don wanted that banner
back in Zone 6.”
Ms. Swindells told Ms. Nakasuji
that Don “would have wanted you
there (for the game) and not at
the visitation. They gave so much
of their lives to West Durham la-
crosse,” she adds.
The Swindells were called “the
King and Queen of West Durham
(lacrosse). They basically kept it
running,” she adds. “As president,
he should have been an overseer,
but he was a doer. He was always
the first one to help.”
He’s survived by Lynn, children
Ky le, Kaitlyn, Jennifer and Chris-
topher, brother Gary and his wife
Debbie, sister Ruth and her hus-
band John, and extended family.
Mr. Swindells funeral is today,
Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. at the McEach-
nie Funeral Home, on Old Kings-
ton Road in Pickering Village. In-
terment is to follow at Pine Ridge
Memorial Gardens.

Union optimistic
about model
landing in Durham
By Izabela Jaroszynski
Staff Writer
DURHAM — While Gen-
eral Motors put months of
rumours to rest with the
announcement that it will
build an all-new version of
the Chevrolet Camaro sport
coupe, speculation contin-
ues over the location of that
production.
Rick Wagoner, GM’s CEO,
announced on Thursday
production of the car will
begin at the end of 2008
and that it will go on sale in
the first quarter of 2009, but
he stopped short of saying
where the much-anticipated
muscle car will be built.
“That decision has not
yet been made,” says GM
Canada spokeswoman
Adria MacKenzie. “We built
a compelling business case
for production in Oshawa,
but they haven’t finalized
the production location, so
we are still waiting to hear.”
Ms. MacKenzie says the
decision will not be made
for another “several months”
and would not speculate as
to the odds of it landing in
Oshawa.
Chris Buckley, however,
was more optimistic about
the announcement.
“It’s great news for the
men and women working in
the car plants in Oshawa,”
the president of CAW local
222 said. “Although it hasn’t
been officially announced
yet, I’m confident that the
next announcement will
say that the Camaro will be
produced in the city of Os-
hawa.”
Mr. Buckley says his con-
fidence comes from changes
being made at the two Os-
hawa plants.
“In the last couple of
months, they’ve
started some geo-
graphical changes
in the plant,” he
said. “They’ve
started doing some
work around the
plant to prepare for
such an announce-
ment.”
Mr. Buckley said
that much of the
work has involved
expansions at the body shop
and construction of extra
loading docks -- work that
he says is needed for the
Zeta platform, which would
allow for the production of
rear-wheel vehicles, such as
the Camaro, and would be
part of a flexible manufac-
turing facility.
“If everything plays out in
the next little while, we’ll end
up building not
only the Camaro,
but a variety of
both front- and
rear-wheel drive
vehicles in a flex
manufactur-
ing system,” Mr.
Buckley added.
The flex-
ible manufactur-
ing facility, which
would cost an es-
timated $500 million to cre-
ate, was announced as part
of the Beacon Project, but
was put on hold until future
product investment into the
Oshawa plant is confirmed.
In February of this year,
the CAW agreed to several
cost-cutting concessions --
such as reduced relief times
and outsourcing of non-
trades maintenance work-
ers -- that would strengthen
its business case to get new
products allocated to the
Oshawa plant. The union is
also pushing for older mem-
bers to accept the $70,000
early retirement pension in-
centives currently on offer
from General Motors, with
the goal of retiring 2,500
workers by the end of 2007.
“It’s important to remem-
ber everything we did at the
beginning of this year was to
demonstrate to the board of
directors that we will have a
competitive agreement put
in place and that Oshawa
is the place to invest,” Mr.
Buckley said.

gional Councillor Bill McLean was
appointed at the meeting), two mem-
bers of the public (one with profes-
sional animal experience and one
with a general interest in the area),
and the city clerk. Those interested
can contact the City.
The committee will be responsible
for hearing all owner appeals of or-
ders to restrain. Orders can be issued
after an animal services officer has
investigated and has reason to believe
that a dog has bitten, attacked or oth-
erwise acted aggressively towards a
person or domestic animal.
If an order is issued and no ap-
peal is filed, the owner must have
the dog licensed, photographed, and
microchipped within 21 days, steril-
ized within four months, and enrolled
in an obedience training class within
six months of being served. The dog
must also be muzzled and leashed if
off the owner’s property.
“We would only put those require-
ments on if we feel it is necessary,”
Ms. Brenner said.
She said the new bylaw will defi-
nitely make requirements around
pets in the city clearer, which in turn
will make the job of animal service
officers easier.
The bylaw also increases the num-
ber of dogs a resident can own from
two to three and introduces a restric-

PICKERING — New signs by the lake
will help point Pickering residents in
the right direction.
The City of Pickering’s waterfront
co-ordinating committee is unveiling
two new Trailhead Signs this month.
“The new signs not only guide you
through the City of Pickering’s trail sys-
tem, but also through our history,” says
Councillor Maurice Brenner, chairman
of the committee.
Ta king place at Millennium Square,
the first sign to be unveiled is for ‘The
Peak Trail.’ Named in honour of Wil-
liam and Margaret Peak, the trail cel-
ebrates the earliest European settlers.
The Peaks are believed to be the first
settlers in Pickering Township.
Following the unveiling on Saturday,
Aug. 12 at 11 a.m., there is a free barbe-
cue hosted by Ontario Power Genera-
tion.
On Saturday, Aug. 26 at Rotary
Frenchman’s Bay West, the second sign
will detail the First Nations Trail. The
sign will illustrate Pickering’s Native
heritage and reveal interesting facts
about the area’s legacy.
The unveiling is at 11 a.m., followed
by a free barbecue, hosted by the
Frenchman’s Bay Yacht Club and the
Rotary Club of Pickering, at the yacht
club, located at 635 Breezy Dr.

PICKERING — Two men sped away
from Durham police as officers closed in
on a suspected bank machine skimming
operation early Tuesday in Pickering.
The two men fled as officers arrived
to check on a report of suspicious ac-
tivity. The men were removing equip-
ment used to steal debit card informa-
tion from an automated teller kiosk at
a Bank of Nova Scotia on Brock Road
South around 7:15 a.m., police said.
Ta king off in a stolen Honda, the sus-
pects were pursued along Bayly Street.
The chase was suspended for safety
reasons once the Honda got onto Hwy.
401 and sped away westbound.
It’s believed the skimming equip-
ment had been in place at the ATM
for a short period of time and that the
suspects were removing it when police
were notified.
Cops are looking for two white men,
possibly of east European descent.

Merger means
more services for
people in need
By Erin Hatfield
Staff Writer
DURHAM — End-of-life
services have been standard-
ized across Durham.
A recent amalgamation of
the North Durham Hospice
and Hospice Durham is all
but complete and that will
mean better services for local
residents, said Cheryl Ma-
cLeod.
The executive director of
the new Durham Hospice
said the organization will be
accredited this fall but, apart
from that, the two hospice
organizations are now one.
“By merging we are mod-
elling exactly what the (On-
tario) government wants,”
Ms. MacLeod said. “We are
now just bigger and better.”
She explained the new di-
rection for the hospice orga-
nizations is consistent with
the goals of the Ministry of
Health and Long Term Care
to see greater integration of
health services.
“What had happened with
hospitals, it was very appar-
ent (the government) was
creating local networks,” Ms.
MacLeod explained.
The amalgamated service
brings with it an economy of
scale for training volunteers
and makes them more acces-
sible to a wider client base.
“A ccessibility is key,” Ms.
MacLeod said. “Time is
something our clients don’t
have.”
To gether they are better
equipped to adequately use
resources, volunteers and
those ever-elusive funding
dollars.
Durham Hospice receives
its base funding from the
Ministry of Health but, ac-
cording to Ms. MacLeod, that
doesn’t meet the organiza-
tion’s base needs.
It is required to raise more
than $100,000 annually to
keep operations going. Offi-
cials do this through fund-
raisers, such as an annual
golf tournament, and with
corporate and in-memoriam
donations.
“We share resources and
standardize services so that
no matter where you live in
the region you can expect the
same high level of service,”
she said.
By amalgamating, Ms. Ma-
cLeod said Hospice Durham
builds on the strengths of
both organizations and pro-
vides more services to more
people at a lower cost.
Hospice provides a pa-
tient-centred and commu-
nity-based response to end-
of-life needs.
“Palliative care is comfort
care,” Ms. MacLeod said.
The services provided
by Durham Hospice, Ms.
MacLeod said, are greatly
needed because of the aging
population. A trend is seeing
more people choose to die at
home.
“They demand it and they
deserve it,” she said. “More
and more people have a
choice and they are entitled
to that choice.”
Volunteers provide non-
medical, emotional support
as part of an individual’s
palliative care team, which
includes nurses, therapists,
dietitians, social workers and
chaplains. Some cases war-
rant multiple volunteers who
can perform any number of
tasks from shopping, to going
out for coffee, to gardening
and just visiting.
“It is only limited by the
imagination of the volunteer
and the needs of the client,”
Ms. MacLeod said.

EDITORIAL
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Revamped nukes
welcome if case is
made to proceed
Three years after the blackout that virtually shut down the
Greater Toronto Area, Ontario’s power situation remains
dire.
Few of us can forget that steamy August afternoon when, to
our astonishment, we learned that the power outage wasn’t
an isolated event, but affected much of northeastern North
America. If you recall, the cause was traced to a chain reaction
that began with downed wires in Ohio.
The blackout and subsequent power up raised public aware-
ness of the fragility of our electricity system, the importance
of conservation and the need for more power. And while the
provincial government is this year coming up with a strategy to
meet our increasing energy demands, hinting at a mix of differ-
ent forms of energy generation, new sources of power are hard
to come by.
So, the Ontario Power Generation decision to start the pro-
cess of looking at refurbishing four reactors on the ‘B’ side
at the Pickering nuclear station is a good one. The Canadian
Nuclear Safety Commission has told OPG that it must conduct
an environmental assessment to determine if the refurbishment
should proceed. The EA is part of a business case study OPG is
conducting to determine if the refurbishment work should be
done -- and how much it would cost.
The latter point is crucial. It wasn’t long ago that billions were
spent refurbishing two of the ‘A’-side reactors. Initially, the cost
to bring all four ‘A’ reactors online was estimated at $800 million.
OPG eventually made the decision that the cost for refurbishing
units 2 and 3 wouldn’t deliver enough return on the invest-
ment.
The bottom line is Ontario needs the power that could be pro-
duced by extending the life of the ‘B’ side units and OPG must do
so if the business case is there. Proceeding with a environmental
assessment is the next step in laying out a complete financial
picture and the impact of doing the work. We need a provincial
energy boost and looking at maximizing existing resources is a
must.
Cutting garbage pickup has caused dumping
To the editor:
I never thought of having to quit my full-time job just to sort
all the recyclables, green bin items, and garbage at my house.
My kitchen has turned into what appears to be a dumping
organization station. I no longer have a cupboard for dog-cat
food, pasta, cereal, and canned goods. Rather, they have been
transformed into three consecutive cupboards consisting of
garbage in one, green bin items in another, and lastly a large
blue recycle bin in the third. Not to mention the green bin is the
large one not the small one, which holds one piece of bread and
a small McIntosh apple. On top of this they have cut our garbage
collection in half, going from four bags every week to four every
other week.
Now, I’m no rocket scientist, I actually work in a dental office.
But, if you cut garbage pickup in half and replace it with this
stupid green bin tell me why you can’t figure out why people are
dumping all over the city.
I am paying $4,500 in taxes per year and for some to suggest
the option of taking everything to the dump is crazy. I don’t care
if the dump has a special each and every day of the week, I am
not paying.

A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, AUGUST 11, 2006 durhamregion.com
N ever before have we received so
much junk mail at Metroland
Durham Region Media Group.
That’s junk mail as in letters, faxes and
e-mails about trash, composting and re-
cycling. If you’ll forgive the pun, much of
what has come to us over the past month
has been utter garbage.
The level of whining over having to do
something which is so straightforward
and environmentally sensible is, to put it
bluntly, rubbish.
We’ve had letter writers who stand up
on a soapbox and declare that, as hard-
working taxpayers (have you ever heard of
any other kind?), they shouldn’t be forced
to recycle since they already pay enough
in property taxes. It’s pretty pointless driv-
el, an argument that utterly misses the
point.
Composting and recycling has abso-
lutely nothing to do with paying taxes
and everything to do with finding a work-
able solution for producing way too much
garbage and having nowhere locally to
put it. With the Michigan trash-trucking
solution quickly running out of steam --
we could be as little as six months away
from losing our cross-border answer to
no local landfill -- we have to find another
way. Incineration is a long-term solution,
but surely the best short-term fix is to
drastically reduce the amount of waste we
produce.
The other big howler has been that Os-
hawa and Whitby no longer allow for the
use of garbage cans. This one requires an
explanation.
Because Oshawa and Whitby have
elected to continue picking up their own
waste -- the other six Durham munici-
palities have uploaded the responsibility
to the Region -- they’ve purchased a new
dual-use refuse truck. It’s divided into
compartments for compost and garbage.
The garbage area can only be reached by
tossing a bag into that particular cham-
ber. Garbage workers can’t reach up to
the garbage compartment using a can,
like they did in the good old days. Plus,
the soon-to-come, see-through garbage
bags will allow workers to quickly make
sure only trash goes in garbage bags, so
that the proper items go to compost. It all
makes sense, if you give it a little thought.
There has also been complaining about
smells and concerns about animals rip-
ping up garbage bags left at the curb.
The smell issue, especially in 35-40 de-
gree weather, can be a tough one, but re-
quires a bit of thought in terms of freezing
compost until just before it is collected.
Garbage, now that it doesn’t contain com-
postables, should not smell or attract ani-
mals. And there should be a lot less of it,
allowing for bi-weekly collection.
It’s been more than a month now and
hopefully everyone has adapted to the
new world of waste management. We
really don’t have a choice -- and it’s some-
thing we should have started doing years
ago.

PICKERING — Tw o-year-old Jack Dicks of Ajax cannot believe
the size of Elmer the Safety Elephant during a recent visit to
the Toys R Us store in Pickering. The store, along with Duracell
Batteries and the Pickering Fire Department, was holding a fire
safety day for kids.
DURHAM — A national chain
with stores in Ajax and Pickering has
launched its second annual Backpacks
for Kids Campaign.
In support of children who cannot
afford new school supplies, the Sleep
Country Canada campaign runs Aug. 1
to Sept. 6.
Durham residents are encouraged
to drop off new backpacks filled with
school supplies to the Sleep Country
stores.
All donations will be distributed to
local children through The Salvation
Army and KidsFestCanada, a non-
profit organization that helps young
Canadians living below the poverty
line.
Last year more than 700 backpacks
were distributed to children and par-
ticipating schools across Canada.
“A backpack is such a small thing,
but by filling it with school supplies,
children will be given the opportunity
to succeed,” says Glen Shepherd, chief
secretary for The Salvation Army in
Canada and Bermuda.
Appropriate items for the backpacks
are non-toxic markers or crayons,
notebooks, geometry sets, dictionary
and thesaurus, pencils, erasers, pencil
cases, highlighters, glue or glue sticks,
educational workbooks, duotangs,
flashcards, paper, scissors, and tape.

DURHAM — Ontario’s back special-
ists, along with the Ontario Chiropractic
Association (OCA), are offering tips for
parents and students.
“Children are particularly vulnerable
to problems associated with carrying
poorly designed or overloaded back-
packs,” says Dr. Bryan Wolfe, president of
the OCA.
Through its public education pro-
gram, ‘Pack it Light. Wear it Right,’ the
OCA provides materials such as post-
ers, information sheets, activity sheets,
and an instructional video on how to
lift, pack, carry, and choose a backpack.
Through the program, the OCA hopes
to get the word out to students, parents,
and teachers.
“Following a few simple guidelines
can make a world of difference for your
child’s spinal health,” says Kristina Peter-
son, chair of the OCA’s external relations
committee.
The OCA suggests the following when
considering, or using, a backpack:
• Size is everything -- choose a back-
pack that is proportionate to body size;
• It’s all in the material -- make sure
the backpack is made of vinyl or canvas
instead of leather;
• Strap it up -- ensure shoulder straps
are adjustable, a minimum of two-inches
wide, and are not tight under the arms;
• A little bit of padding -- a padded
back provides added protection and
comfort. Odd-shaped items won’t dig
into the back if packed on the opposite
side;
• Pack it right -- keep the heaviest
items closest to the body to reduce strain
and to evenly distribute the contents;
• Hug your hips -- 50 to 70 per cent of
the weight can be carried by the pelvis
if the pack has a hip-strap or waist belt.
This takes the weight off the shoulders
and spine, balancing the load;
• More pockets -- avoid packs with one
large pocket. Several smaller pockets will
help distribute weight and keep the con-
tents from shifting;
• Weight -- backpacks should never
exceed 15 per cent of a secondary school
student’s body weight or 10 per cent of
an elementary student’s weight; and
• Wheels and handles -- just like roll-
ing luggage, another option is a back-
pack with handles and wheels for easy
transport.

PICKERING — For those who might
have missed some important Pickering
news in the last month, last year or last
century, the Pickering Public Library is of-
fering help.
The library recently finished a long on-
going project to make back issues of the
Ajax and Pickering News Advertiser avail-
able online. Gilbert Boehm, manager of
systems with the Pickering Public Library,
said they’d previously had issues of the
News Advertiser, as well as previous local
newspapers, available online through the
Pickering Ajax Digital Archives (www.
pada.ca), but the files were never up-to-
date. He said PADA was always years be-
hind.
Now, the issues will be live within a
month.
“Our intention is to keep it up-to-date as
new issues become available,” Mr. Boehm
said.
Officials started compiling the local his-
tory database in the early 1990s as a way to
make local history and newspapers avail-
able to the public on the Internet. Mr.
Boehm said it is part of the library’s mis-
sion to provide local information to the
community.
“If the Pickering library doesn’t do it,
who will? It’s part of our mandate to pro-
vide local history and what better source
of local history is there than local newspa-
pers,” he said.
The newspaper archive includes the
News Advertiser, The Bay News, The
Pickering Post, The Pickering News, and
The Bay Weekly Reporter. It goes back to
1881.
Papers have been scanned in or the
microfiche-microfilm format they were on
has been digitized. Mr. Boehm said there
are still a few decades from the mid-1950s
to 1991 that are available at the library, but
haven’t been digitized yet. A few odd is-
sues are also missing for whatever reason,
he said.
PA DA also features an image gallery,
birth, death and marriage records, and
cemetery records. Those records, as well
as the newspaper archive, are used for
genealogy research, school projects and
trying to find local information.
“This is it,” Mr. Boehm said. “This is the
only place you’ll be able to find local info
like this.”

Landowners
can see the
forest for the
tax break
Up to 75 per cent to be
saved through program
By Jennifer Stone
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Having a forest on
your property could mean a tax
break, under the Ontario Managed
Forest Tax Incentive Program.
The program “applies to a land
owner that has 10 acres or more of
forested land” on their property, said
Rob Keen, project manager for the
Trees Ontario Foundation of the On-
tario Forestry Association.
Under the MFTIP, landowners can
save up to 75 per cent of property
taxes on the portion of their property
covered by forest.
To participate, landowners have to
agree to conditions, including pre-
paring and following a Managed For-
est Plan for their forest, said infor-
mation on the Ministry of Natural
Resources website.
The landowner can write the plan,
or have a forestry planning consul-
tant do it, said Mr. Keen. The plan
would include objectives such as de-
velopment of trails, maintaining or
encouraging wildlife habitats, con-
servation or environmental protec-
tion.
If the plan is accepted, “the forest-
ed component would be reassessed
as managed forest and (the landown-
er) could save up to 75 per cent of the
property tax on that component of
the property,” said Mr. Keen.
An information workshop will be
held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Mon-
day, Oct. 2, at the Uxbridge Public
Library.
More information and application
forms are available at www.oforest.
on.ca, or www.ontariosforests.mnr.
gov.on.ca/mftip.cfm.
“It’s in society’s best interest to
maintain and increase our forests,”
said Mr. Keen.

How do I get
something published
in Durham Region
Media Group
newspapers?
The short answer is pick up the
phone and give us a call. It's re-
ally as easy as dialing 905.579-
4400 and speaking to someone
in our newsroom. For the digi-
tally inclined, let your fingers do
the work for you by emailing us
at newsroom@durhamregion.
com.
Our Managing Editors are local
people, who know their way
around Durham Region, and
we'll be happy to answer all
your questions.
We have a team of editors,
reporters and photographers
on hand to help you tell your
story.
One of the best ways to
communicate information is
through a Press Release.
What is a
press release?
A press release is a written out-
line of your announcement.
What should be in my
press release?
A press release should answer
the Five Ws about your upcom-
ing event or accomplishment:
WHO is holding the event? A
group, a company?
WHAT is the event? A grand
opening, a fun fair, special
event, strawberry tea, 100th
birthday?
WHEN is it happening?
Month, date, day of the week,
time - be specific, not 'tomor-
row'?
WHERE is it being held?
Street name, number, name of
location if it is a school or hall
etc., town or hamlet?
WHY is the event being held?
To raise funds, a special occa-
sion, a grand opening?
What makes a good press
release?
* Be brief and to the point.
Almost any news release can
be written within one double-
spaced, type-written page.
* Plan well in advance to have
the information to the paper
10 - 14 days in advance of the
event you are seeking publicity
for to ensure we can get it in
the paper.
* Include your name and tele-
phone number so we can call to
clarify things.
* Don’t be afraid to suggest
something new. We welcome
original ideas when they’re
practical and organized.
How do we get a
Durham Region Media
Group photographer to
attend our event?
The two most important factors
that determine whether we will
be able to send a photographer
to your event are:
1. Newsworthiness
A photo opportunity is newswor-
thy if it will be of interest to an
audience beyond your group.
2. Schedules
As you can imagine, our photog-
raphers are in high demand. The
sooner you let us know about
your event, the better the chance
we will have room in our sched-
ule to attend.
How do I make my photo
request a success?
* Call early (14 days in advance
is best).
* Be prepared with details that
help us determine whether we
will be able to attend your event.
We need to know the Who,
What, When, Where and Why of
the event.
* If we are sending a photogra-
pher, be ready when he or she
arrives. Follow the photogra-
pher’s instructions on composi-
tion and have the correct spelling
of the names of the people in the
photo as well as their titles.
*Provide a telephone number
where we can contact you the
day of the event in the event we
are delayed (breaking news may
force us to miss a scheduled
photo shoot but we'll call to let
you know).
Can we submit
our own photo?
Absolutely! If a Durham Region
Media Group
photographer can’t make it
you’re welcome to take a photo
and send it to us.
* We accept colour or black &
white photos, or you can e-mail
digital images to newsroom@
durhamregion.com. We do not
accept photocopies.
* Editors prefer ACTION photos.
If you have eight people don’t
line them up eight across, mix
and match, sitting and standing,
to maximize interest.
* Be sure to include a concise
caption that covers all of the 5
Ws.
* Please identify everyone in
the photo with full first and last
names spelled correctly. Identify
the people in the photo from left
to right.
* Include your name and tele-
phone number in case we have
questions.
* Due to space constraints, we
cannot guarantee the photo will
appear in the newspaper but
we'll do our very best.

Electricity distribution
companies offer
hints on how to save
DURHAM — Residents can do
both their pocketbooks and the
power grid a favour by taking mea-
sures to conserve while they’re on
vacation, says a group representing
Ontario’s six largest electricity distri-
bution companies.
PowerWise, which includes distri-
bution companies including Verid-
ian, a power supplier to many parts
of Durham, is advising customers of
ways to keep electricity usage to a
minimum and save money.
“In additional to turning off
lights and air conditioners when
they leave on vacation, consumers
should also consider unplugging all
devices in their home that may be
responsible for ‘hidden load’,” said
Michael Angemeer, president and
CEO of Veridian.
Hidden loads are generated by
devices such as computers, print-
ers, home entertainment equip-
ment, microwave ovens and digital
clocks, which all consume power in
standby mode, even when they are
not being used. Added together over
the course of a year, hidden loads in
the average household can account
for about $50 or 400 KWh of power
consumption, the same amount of
power used annually by an energy-
efficient refrigerator.
“It’s easier to save a megawatt
than to build a megawatt,” said On-
tario Energy Minister Dwight Dun-
can. “By reducing energy consump-
tion, we can cut down on our need
to build a new supply and we can all
save money.”
There are a number of ways to
save money on the electricity bill
when away from home on vaca-
tion, said a media release from Pow-
erWise, which offers the following
suggestions:
Before you leave:
• Turn off your air conditioner;
• Close blinds and curtains;
• If leaving lights on for security
reasons, make sure they are com-
pact fluorescent bulbs and put them
on a timer;
• Eliminate hidden loads by un-
plugging the TV, radio, stereo, DVD,
VCR, computers, printers, wine
cooler, microwave, beer fridge, pool
heater, clock radios, etc.;
• and, turn off ceiling fans.
At the cottage:
• barbecue as much as possible;
• keep screens in good repair and
open windows;
• use table fans;
• dry clothes outdoors;
• install compact fluorescent light
bulbs; and
• unplug the fridge when leaving.

DURHAM — The rumble of thunder and crackle of lightning
mean a storm is fast approaching and that sends most people
running for cover. Not Colin Williamson.
The 30-year-old Oshawa resident is a self-proclaimed “storm
chaser.” Armed with a camera, he follows thunderstorms, torna-
dos and hurricanes on their destructive paths, stopping only to
snap photos of nature’s fury.
“As a kid I was terrified of lightning,” he says. “Then one day I
saw a guy taking photos of it. At first I thought he was crazy, then
I looked and realized how incredible it was.”
Mr. Williamson spent his childhood reading up on extreme
weather and, after getting a driver’s licence at 16, he hit the road,
visiting weather hotspots like Florida, Kansas and Oklahoma.
“My mom didn’t really like that,” he chuckles.
To day, he spends weeks at a time travelling Canada and
the U.S. in search of storms, selling his photos and video foot-
age to the Toronto Star, CNN and many others.
He is also a member of the Weather Network’s “extreme
weather team,” a group of volunteers trained to keep an eye on
the weather and report back to the network’s meteorologists.
“For me, weather is like a magnet,” Mr. Williamson says.
“There’s nothing like seeing a tornado from half a kilometre
away or seeing hail the size of baseballs.”
But that doesn’t mean the average person should give it a
try. Ever since the movie ‘Twister’ glamorized the world of
storm chasing, Mr. Williamson said people have been eager
to try their hand at it. But it takes more than a lens to be a real
storm chaser — an understanding of the weather is key.
Mr. Williamson has spent years learning what makes a storm
tick and how close is too close — and he is regularly shocked by
the misconceptions people have.
A few weeks ago he was on the sidelines watching a soccer
game in Oshawa’s Alexandra Park, when thunder and lightning
made an appearance.
“There were three games going on, kids everywhere and they
didn’t call off any of the games,” he says, shaking his head. “I
asked the refs why — they said they only call it if the lightning is
too close... trust me if you can see it, it’s too close.”
According to Environment Canada, precautions should be
taken even if a thunderstorm is not directly overhead, because
lightning can strike several kilometres away from a storm.
The best advice is to seek shelter, whether indoors or in a
vehicle. When trapped outdoors, the experts say to steer clear
of tall objects, high ground or open fields. If caught on level
ground, crouch down — do not lie flat. Mr. Williamson adds
precautions should be taken indoors as well. Although it’s
tempting to watch a storm, windows are a dangerous place to
do it from. Also, turn off electrical appliances, avoid the use of
tap water and stay off phones and computers.
“Everyone needs to understand how dangerous lightning
can be... It’s exciting and beautiful, but you have to know what
you’re doing.”
Durham man loves life in the eye of the storm
While most take cover, a good storm has Colin Williamson armed and ready with a camera. The Durham man’s photos have been picked up by news organizations and he is a member of
the Weather Network’s extreme weather team.

A highly regarded and successful clinic
for the treatment of neuromuscular
complaints, ZyGenix Health Group
is continuing to help people in pain all
around the Greater Toronto Area. Across
Canada these integrative treatment
facilities are attaining results from their
multidisciplinary approach where others
have failed. The success rate is unbelievably
high in these clinics, and many individuals
have even avoided invasive surgeries and
many are living a better quality of life. The
degree of muscular relaxation, increased
joint mobility, and overall pain relief is
outstanding. Case studies and treatments
were initially performed in India (New
Delhi), Edmonton, Alberta, and then the
Greater Toronto region with remarkable
results. In the GTA, clinics are now
located in Mississauga, North York, and
Scarborough, with a brand new location
being set up in Oakville because demand is
has been so high. All you need to do is call
and ask if your condition can be treated.
The concept of “Zy”, or Intracare
(intermeshing) of health services is the
main premise of Zygenix Health Groups.
This approach is centered around the fact
that our body relies on multiple systems to
work properly to avoid and recover from
illness. The goal is to pinpoint the source
of the patient’s condition through Zygenix’
thorough testing, and to determine the
optimal treatment protocol for the patient
so that the person can recover quickly and
naturally through the treatments. For
both minor conditions, and more severe
conditions, the goal is also to correct the
problem, rather than temporarily relieving
the pain.
Zygenix Health Groups employs a “team
of doctors” approach. This allows different
treatments to complement each other for
maximal result. The clinics have a number
of beneficial effects that no other clinics
provide. They use a unique combination
of manual treatments resulting in relaxed
muscles, improved nerve function, increased
mobility, and reduced pain. ZyGenix
Health Group practitioners treat chronic
conditions of the nerve, muscle, bone, joint,
and tissues. These treatments, combined
with strengthening and conditioning,
cervical traction systems, precision-point
therapy, and technologically advanced laser
therapy and other high-tech modalities,
gives the patient maximum pain relief
and provides the patient with a long term
answer for their chronic pain conditions.
CHRONIC PAIN: How do we treat it?
Pa tients suffering from chronic pain
conditions often have seen many doctors,
practitioners, and have undergone many
different therapies. They suffer from
physical pain, and they also have a chemical
and psychological component to their pain,
which are often neglected or overlooked by
other facilities. ZyGenix treatment centers
deal with the physical aspects of the nerve,
muscle, bone, joint, and tissue as well as the
nutritional and psychological components
to chronic pain conditions.
PHYSICAL: Nerve, Muscle, Bone, Joint,
and Tissue conditions.
CHEMICAL: The chemistry of the body
changes with inflammation and pain.
Chronic conditions are often associated
with metabolic changes such as obesity and
malnutrition.
PSYCHOLOGICAL: Chronic pain
alters your cognition (thinking) leading
to irritability and moodiness, depression,
anxiety, stress and other psychological
conditions which can have an impact on
your family and social spheres. This will
further aggravate your condition of pain.
Each treatment plan is individualized
and builds on the last and after a series of
treatment, a long lasting relief of symptoms
is noted as treatment is centered on
correcting the root cause of the problem.
The nutritional and psychological
components allow for a more complete care.
Pa tients find that following a treatment they
have less stress, feel more relaxed and have a
sense of well-being due to the fact there is a
release of natural opiates called endorphins,
which are elevated significantly during a
treatment.
ZyGenix Health Group is one of the
first treatment systems to provide fully
integrative care in Western Canada;
integrating common used Eastern and
We stern treatments systems. Specific
conditions are treated from an Eastern
and Western perspective with specific
groups of muscles in combination with a
nutritional assessment that correlates all
aspects of health. These treatments give the
patient maximum pain relief and provide
the patient with a long term solution for
their pain, because of the individualized
treatment system provided by Zygenix’
based on their clinical findings.
When you should call us?
Pain relief and restoration of functioning
are attained for such conditions as: neck
pain, upper and low back pain, headaches
(migraines), carpal tunnel syndrome,
frozen shoulder, thoracic outlet syndrome,
(numbness and tingling of the arm and
hand), tendonitis (tennis and golfers
elbow), plantar fascitis (pain at the bottom
of the foot), sports injuries, whiplash, TMJ,
asthma, sciatica (pain and tingling to the
buttock and leg), arthritis, torticollis (wry
neck), sprain and strain injuries as well as
the soft tissue component of almost any
condition involving the nerve, bone, joint,
muscle, or tissue. Many patients deemed as
potential surgical candidates have avoided
or prolonged the need for surgery with the
“Zy” approach. The reality is that most
people wait too long and the problems
keep getting worse leading to increased
suffering. ZyGenix doctors are available at
various clinics around the greater Toronto
area to help you with your concern. An
appointment can be made by calling
905-803-0222. All you need to do is
call and ask if your condition is treatable.
ZyGenix treatments may be fully or
partially covered by health plans through
work and insurance. The staff of highly
trained will take the time to listen to
concerns, answer questions, and to help
people understand that they don’t have to
live with pain.

Ajax man goes solo at Dance Festival
Jason Foucault may
have come late to
dancing, but he’s
earned plenty of
experiences
By Alistair Lowe
Special to the News Advertiser
AJAX — A career in dancing and
choreographer may have come later
in life, but Jason Foucault continues
to make the most of his opportuni-
ties.
At the age of 25, Foucault was at
a bar mitzvah where he was intro-
duced to dancers who inquired if he
was interested in dancing.
“Ever since I was a kid I always
liked the old Fred Astaire movies,
and that’s where I started,” recalls
the Ajax man.
He was introduced to, and men-
tored by, Colleen Friedman, even-
tually attending the Toronto School
of Dance. From there, Foucault hit
the festival circuit with Friedman’s
dance company ‘DanceCo2,’ which
has since disbanded. He then toured
Brazil in 2001-02 with the Newton
Moraes Dance Theatre.
Upon returning to Canada, the
current Pitney Bowes employee
continued to perform with the
Newton Moraes group at numerous
festivals throughout 2003-04. After
marrying, settling down, and hav-
ing a child, Foucault decided to take
a year off to “concentrate on (his)
family.”
Foucault’s career path has taken a
number of turns along the way.
Hailing from Sudbury, Foucault
moved to the Jane Street and Finch
Av enue area of Toronto at age 17
where he eventually became a
professional dog trainer -- by ac-
cident. He purchased an aggressive
dog, “for security, due to the cul-
ture shock and the area.” However,
the dog was proving difficult to be
trained.
“Once I hooked up with a good
dog trainer,” he said. “I got more
involved because it was something
I was good at.”
As for getting a start seemingly
late in life with dance, Foucault said
that’s not really the case.
“It’s not uncommon for male
dancers to start their career at the
age of 16 or 17,” he said. “It’s impor-
tant not to discount older males, as
there is always a need for good male
dancers and older boys should not
be discouraged.”
The coming week marks another
milestone in his dance life. At the
Dance Festival running Aug. 8 to
19 in Toronto’s Historic Distillery
District, Foucault is performing his
first solo piece, ‘Gylt’.
“It’s very experimental and it let
me explore my art as a dancer and
a choreographer,” he said. “It’s very
exciting to test myself as a solo.”
Foucault is on stage Saturday,
Aug. 12 at 2:20 p.m., Aug. 13 at 4
p.m., Aug. 18 at 12:10 p.m., and Sat.,
Aug. 19 at 2:12 p.m. For more infor-
mation or tickets, call 416-504-7529,

Sweet art exhibit
PICKERING — Oshawa resi-
dent Marissa Sweet’s works are in
the house starting Monday.
The house is the Information
Centre of Ontario Power Genera-
tion, Pickering Nuclear, where her
abstract-impressionistic works are
on display from Aug. 14 to Oct. 10.
Sweet’s one-woman show of 14
paintings reveal the simplicity of na-
ture and the art of placement. She
started painting in oils in 1985 and
switched to acrylic painting in the
early 1990s.
Influenced by her studies in
feng shui, her paintings hint at a
oneness with nature and prompt
the viewer to reflect upon an indi-
vidual’s relationship with his or her
surroundings.
The Information Centre is at
1675 Montgomery Park Rd. (at the
foot of Brock Road) and is open to
the public Monday to Friday from 9
a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

AJAX — Influenced by the
Group of Seven, a Pickering resi-
dent opened her one woman show,
‘A rt in Public Places,’ this month.
Acr ylic landscapes by Judith
Jewer are on display in the Atrium
of the McLean Community Centre in
Ajax until Sept. 11.
Jewer is active in the arts
community as a member of the
PineRidge Arts Council, the Dur-
ham West Arts Centre and Ajax
Creative Arts, among others. She
often starts working on location,
exploring the landscapes in Ajax and
Pickering, then completes the work
in her studio. The exhibit is available
for viewing at no cost during busi-
ness hours at the McLean centre,
95 Magill Dr. in Ajax. Hours are Mon-

Nations dances connected
to the values of Scouting.
The Kwahadis, from
Amarillo Texas, are a
Scout Group with roots
as far back as 1944, when
eight boys were taught to
do one dance for a camp-
fire. The Scouts make their
own regalia and carefully
learn the culture so they
can accurately honour
the dances and the native
people.
They were given the
right to use the name
Kw ahadi by the elders of
the Comanche, the name
of a band of Comanche
people who hunted on
the High Plains of Texas.
The Kwahadis’ mission
is to share through their
performances the gifts of
song and dance with the
wisdom they hold.
The Hoop Dance, mid-

Long line of fans
for hockey greats
By Brandon Walker
Staff Writer
PICKERING — The Mahovlich
brothers, Frank and Peter, spent
three hours signing autographs at
the Pickering Markets on Saturday,
Aug. 5, making dreams come true
for NHL fans and collectors alike.
The line of people stretched the
length of the Pickering Markets, all
wanting to catch a glimpse or get
the autograph of the brothers who
left an incredible mark on the his-
tory of hockey in Canada. Some
fans showed up as early as 8:30
a.m.
John Low, from Ajax, said he ar-
rived before 9 a.m. but still had to
wait an hour and a half.
When asked if the Mahovlichs
were his heroes when he was a kid,
Mr. Low said, “Absolutely, Frank
was for sure. I’m a collector and
meeting the players is what it’s all
about.”
Mr. Low said one of the differ-
ences between getting autographs
from the older players opposed to
the current generation is the older
players actually sign legibly.
Fans showed up with ticket stubs,
hockey cards, photos, books and
one fan even took an old chair with
a Red Wings logo on it, all to be
signed by two very famous brothers
who made history playing Canada’s
favourite pastime.
Drew Falconer, who drove in
from Cobourg, said it was nice
meeting them again. “It was im-
portant because I wanted to get
stuff signed that I didn’t get signed
last time I met them. It was my third
time meeting Frank and my second
time meeting Peter, it’s nice to see
them both together.”
Although Mr. Falconer said right-
winger Paul Henderson is his hero,
he did say he’d made some trea-
sured additions to his collection by
seeing the brothers again.
Andy Dougles, who made the
trip from Scarborough, said it was
terrific to meet the guys. “It re-
ally is a trip down memory lane.
They’re very personable. It’s nice
that they’ve got time for old-timers
like me. I remember seeing them
when they played for St. Mike’s. In
those days you couldn’t even play
hockey on Sundays after 6 p.m.,
because of it being the Lord’s day.”
Mr. Dougles said the Big M was
always one of his heroes. “I always
admired the way Pete played too.”
Carl Papa also drove in from
Scarborough and said although the
wait was long, it was worth it. “It
was a thrill,” Mr. Papa said. “Frank
was my hero. He’s the reason I be-
came a Red Wings fan; I’m still a
Red Wings fan to this day.”
Mr. Papa got Frank to sign a 1976
banner from the Canada Cup.
“I got it at a garage sale for $2,” he
said with a laugh.
Peter said it was a little surpris-
ing to see so many people lined up
to meet him and his brother. “But I
can understand,” he said, “because
Frank’s here too.”

American meet
AJAX — Anyone looking for
athletes from Durham Region
at the North American Youth
Track and Field Champion-
ships would have found them
on the winners’ podium.
Held in Hershey, Pennsylva-
nia, the meet attracts athletes
from across North America.
Julian Patchett, from Ajax,
won gold in the boys’ 13-14 800
metres, winning convincingly
in a time of 2:05.75 and just
missing the meet record for the
event by 2.6 seconds.
The second-place finisher,
from California, was seven
seconds behind and the third-
place finisher came in nine
back.
Patchett had set his mind on
breaking the meet record, but
the lack of competition and
the high temperatures worked
against him.
The Prince sisters -- Kendra
and Nichelle -- from Ajax ran in
4-x-100m relay races. Nichelle’s
11-12 team brought home the
gold with a time of 53.79 sec-
onds, while Kendra ran in the
9-10 age group and her team
finished in second with a time
of 1:01.12 seconds.
B.J. Cunliffe, from Courtice,
placed second in the 13-14 age
group 1,600-metre (one-mile)
race, finishing in a time of
4:49.35.
He just beat out the third and
fourth place finishers, from
British Columbia and Califor-
nia respectively, by tenths-of-
a-second.
AJAX — The organizers of the
North Scarborough Soccer Tourna-
ment were short one team, so at
the last minute, they invited the
eventual champions.
Called just days before the tour-
nament began, the Ajax United
Lightning Bolts under-11 girls’ soc-
cer team not only went undefeated,
but unscored upon, in taking the
title. Not only that, but the Bolts
were also down three players due
to vacations.
In the finals, the Bolts took on the
Ajax United Roadrunners under-10
team, claiming the crown with a 4-0
victory.
In round-robin play, the United
girls knocked off the North York
Cosmos 3-0 and Peterborough 4-0.
The two Ajax teams were sched-
uled to play the final round-robin
match, but as both teams were
guaranteed a spot in the finals, the
game wasn’t played.
Lightning Bolt members are
Lauren Henderson, Taylor Correia,
Lateisha Grant, Stephanie Rampi-
no, Samantha Smart, Cassie Sribny,
To ri Longbottom, Alex Lamon-
tagne-Maycock, Lauren Duggan,
Alexia Sribny, Marissa Graham-
Singh and Brittney Lawrence. Miss-
ing from the event were Keyana
Howard, Kiana Chiu and Maddy
McKinnon.

Thanks to St. Jude and the sacred heart
of Jesus for favors received. May the
sacred heart of Jesus be adored,
glorified, loved and preserved through-
out the world now and forever. Sacred
heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude,
worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude,
helper of the hopeless, pray for us.
St. Jude, healer of the sick, pray for us.
Say this prayer nine times per day for
nine days. This prayer has never failed,
and your prayers will be answered.
