Inside the chapel at St. Paul’s on the Hill Anglican Church, rent- ed by the Church Without Limits for the Aug. 1 service, pews were packed by those interested in ex- periencing the miracles promised by their Texan guest. “Healing is not the perfect will of God, healing is second best,” said the cheery man wearing a red plaid shirt and black pants, as he walked around speaking through a hands-free microphone to those in the chapel. “Healing, that means you’ve got to be sick.” After accepting freewill dona- tions from the audience and shar- ing stories about miracles already performed, Mr. Smith asked those suffering from back pain to come forth. Alistair Lowe, an Ajax and Pickering News Advertiser sum- mer student, was among those who did. Mr. Lowe has experi- enced chronic back pain since North Pickering business owner says Niagara man a ‘super guy’ By Erin Hatfield and Crystal Crimi Staff Writers PICKERING — A 44-year-old Niagara man is dead after a tragic hang-gliding accident in north Pickering. It is not known how Jim Freer, who was an experienced mem- ber of the High Perspective hang-gliding club and school lo- cated across the road from the accident, became entangled in the hydro wires along Hwy. 7 and Sideline 26. Emergency personnel were called to the scene just before noon on Friday, according to Sergeant Paul McCurbin of the Durham Regional Police. Upon arrival, he said Mr. Freer was found to be on fire and in ex- treme distress. Michael Robertson, of High Perspective, was answering the phone Friday afternoon in case the man’s family called. He con- firmed Mr. Freer was an advanced student at High Perspective. “Such a super guy,” said Mr. Robertson in a wavering voice, adding he was not yet able to give an interview. “We’re all in shock here. We’ve never had an incident like this in 37 years.” OPP and York and Durham EMS crews were on scene and worked to get Mr. Freer down from the wires, while two helicop- ters buzzed overhead. Pickering firefighters used a ladder truck to reach him and he was lowered to the ground shortly after noon. Sgt. Mr. Smith was a guest of the Church Without Limits Aug. 1, which rents space from the Pickering church. Mr. Lowe reports his chronic back pain remains after his meeting with Mr. Smith. ‘Balance’ returns to woman’s life being crushed by a shipping crate two years ago at a previous job. Like those before him, Mr. Lowe was asked to sit in a chair, stretch out his legs and relax them in Mr. Smith’s hands. With the audience stretching their arms toward Mr. Lowe in prayer, Mr. Smith looked at his feet, turned them inward, then asked him to stand. Looking dizzy and confused, Mr. Lowe did so, shook his head, then shook Mr. Smith’s hand and the audi- ence erupted with cheers. Unfortunately, Mr. Lowe’s pain re- turned after a minute. “A t first I thought wow, it worked,” said Mr. Lowe. In hindsight, he said he thinks Mr. Smith provided temporary relief by gently tugging his legs while he turned them inward. He added, he also felt pressure from the crowd to say something nice so they wouldn’t be let down. Later in the service, Mr. Smith checked back in with Mr. Lowe and again, asked the audience to reach out and help remove his pain. As those on hand ended the service with a song, Mr. Smith slipped into the hallway and talked with Mr. Lowe. “If there’s a difference in it, expect more,” said Mr. Smith, cowboy hat on his head. “If I pray for you and it hap- pens instantly, that’s a miracle. If I pray for you and it starts to get better, that’s called healing. When you start feeling a difference, let me know... Most of them get it instantly, but some of them don’t.” Mr. Smith said he once helped a man paralyzed by a gunshot wound, but at first, all he experienced was a warm sensation in his legs. He added, sometimes people don’t want to be healed because they’re fear- ful of change or need time to reach out. For Sandie Gunn of Oshawa, her healing experience was completely dif- ferent. “What I feel now is I’m a little more balanced,” she said while standing by a table of Mr. Smith’s books and CDs for sale. “And there’s no pain in my tailbone now.” Ms. Gunn said she’s had spinal cord and degenerate discs disease since age 14. “I’m healing, it’s awesome,” she said. Tuesday was her first time visiting the church and she did so after her friend’s testimony about Mr. Smith. Although she’s curious where the pain went, she said maybe she should just listen to Mr. Smith and let it go. Adam McLaren of Belleville said he felt a difference in his shoulder. “A ctually, I’m doing better right now than I have in years,” said Mr. McLaren, chatting in the chapel after the service. Mr. McLaren said he’s never really been a religious person and now he’s questioning if he should be one. Mr. Smith’s youth was absent of re- ligion, but not of pain. Born with a deformed heart, Mr. Smith said he had three heart attacks by age 21. Also an alcoholic, he decided to give his life to God and began learning about people who had been healed. He compared his faith to the size of an aspirin and soon discovered he was able to heal headaches. He began doing bible readings while working with young drug users and alcoholics. At age 25, he said he went for a heart checkup and the doctor told him his heart was new. Then, at age 35, a car he was working on fell and crushed his head. “All the doctors were looking at it and my bones went back in place,” said Mr. Smith. Since then, he’s travelled to 48 differ- ent countries, sharing testimonies and performing miracles such as shrinking tumours and causing new organs and bones to grow, he said. ✦ Balance from page 1 By Jillian Follert Staff Writer DURHAM — A week of hot temperatures didn’t wilt the resolve of a North York couple, determined to walk 130 kilometres from Durham Region to Ham- ilton to raise awareness of Parkinson’s Disease. It’s been eight years since Margaret Turner, 70, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, a progressive neurodegenerative disor- der that affects movement. She and husband Don- ald, 73, have been active with the Parkinson Society of Canada ever since. Last year, they walked 100 kilo- metres around the perim- eter of Toronto to mark the society’s 40th anniversary and promote the Super- Walk for Parkinson’s held every September. “This year, we wanted to do a little more,” Mr. Turner said. The high school sweet- hearts, who are coming up on their 50th wedding an- niversary, decided to walk 130 kilometres from Os- hawa to Hamilton, passing through nine municipali- ties along the way. They set off from Oshawa City Hall Thursday morn- ing at 10 a.m. and hope to reach Hamilton City Hall by the end of the month. We ather permitting, they plan to walk four or five hours at a time, with a few days off here and there. The pair is walking through Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Scarborough, To ronto, Etobicoke, Mis- sissauga, Oakville and Burlington before ending in Hamilton. They hope supporters will join them along the way, even if its just for a few kilometres. “I believe our initiatives w ill inspire other people living with Parkinson’s,” Mrs. Turner said. “We want them to know there is hope for all of them.” Tremors, weakness and stiffness are just a few of the symptoms Mrs. Turner lives with on a daily basis. Other common Parkinson symptoms include loss of balance, slower move- ment, painful muscle con- tractions, memory loss and difficulty speaking. Parkinson’s affects more than 100,000 Canadians and there is no cure -- al- though researchers are making strides in their understanding of the dis- ease. The Turners say that is why the annual Super- Walk, which raises funds for research and support, is so important. “It’s not about how Par- kinson’s limits you, but about what you are still able to do,” Mrs. Turner said. “We are here to prove a point and want to en- courage people to be hopeful that funds raised at the 2006 SuperWalk for Parkinson’s may lead to a cure.” This year, the SuperWalk is Sunday, Sept. 24, start- ing at Rotary Park in Ajax at 1:30 p.m. For more information visit www.parkinson.ca or www.superwalk.com. Their son-in-law, Mike Cuffe, joined them for their walk through Ajax.durhamregion.com By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — Pickering residents with Scot pines in their yard are being asked to be on the lookout for pine wilt. While the tree disease is not widespread in Pickering, City staff were made aware of an out- break in the spring and following that put out a public notice. John Hanna, superintendent of municipal op- erations, said they received a call from a resident who lives in the Liverpool Road and Finch Avenue area who had a section of pines with the disease. He added there have been no other cases in the city, but for those residents with that kind of tree on their property it is something to watch out for. “If they have Scot pines on their property they should be aware of the problem if they start to turn brown,” Mr. Hanna said. The disease is caused by an insect infestation, it starts at the top of the tree and works its way down. There is no treatment for pine wilt. “The only thing you can do when you notice it, is cut the tree down and get rid of the wood,” Mr. Hanna said. Pine wilt is found in Scot and Austrian pines, and occasionally white pine. It usually appears from August to December. Once infected, a tree may survive for more than one year. The needles of in- fected trees turn a yellow-brown colour and remain attached to the tree. It is more commonly found in the United States. Mr. Hanna said the City hasn’t received any other calls from residents about pine wilt and there has been no sign of it on any public properties, such as City parks. “There doesn’t seem to be any large groupings of Scot pine (in Pickering),” he added. Yo ur editorial was a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black. It was nothing more than a rant centring on ‘if you’re not for me, you’re against me.’ In fact, while the new program makes large steps forward in the area of kitchen waste, mistakes have been made and money wasted. The DVD program is a prime example. Those who read the print material that accompanied the green boxes didn’t need the DVD, and those who didn’t read the material wouldn’t have watched the DVD either. Bottom line is that the money spent was a waste and the DVDs will needlessly add to landfill material. Jurisdictions such as Whitby that are required to use plastic garbage bags also have a valid complaint, as they are compelled to send even more plastic to the landfill in the name of pickup speed. The list of recyclable plastic in Durham is far short of that in other jurisdic- tions. We’ve taken a step forward, but it’s far from perfect. Much, much more needs to be done. Shame on you for your unwar- ranted criticism of those who point out the flaws. David Bergson Ajax EDITORIAL All Ontario wants is an equal chance It wasn’t realistic to expect the premiers to agree on the thorny issue of equalization payments when they met last week, but talking about a problem is the first step to solving it. There is certainly a dramatic difference of opinion between the so-called have and have-not provinces on equalization. Even defining exactly what the payments are and what they mean can be an elusive process. But one thing is for sure: Ontario, based on its position as Canada’s most populous province and one of just three haves (Alberta and British Columbia are the others), pays dramatically more into the program than it gets back. A recent visit to Durham Region by Marie Bountrogianni, Ontario’s minister of intergovernmental affairs, was instructive on the topic of equalization payments. Ms. Bountrogianni told a joint meeting of the Whitby and Greater Oshawa chambers of commerce along with the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade that the current setup just isn’t fair to Ontario. For example, she notes that Ontario pays $4.9 billion of the $11 billion equalization bill. Quebec gets $5 billion in equaliza- tion payments -- it is the biggest have-not province -- and has a near universal child-care program and university tuitions that average $1,800 per year. In contrast, Ontario has no child-care program and tuitions that are about $5,000 per year. It’s not difficult to see the gap for those needing child care and paying university tuition is far too great between Canada’s two largest provinces. While equalization is meant to close the chasm between dif- ferent economic realities across the country, it would seem those who live in Quebec and other have-not provinces are getting a very generous helping hand from Ontario, Alberta and B.C. While the have provinces in a federation like Canada will always need to help out the have-nots, it’s not unreasonable to expect that the system needs to be more balanced. Concerns have been raised that if the program is not adjusted, Ontario itself could wind up becoming a have-not province. That would surely throw the whole system of equalization into turmoil. It’s fair to assume that Ontario is willing to pay its fair share into a system that helps out those who really need it across Canada, but not fair to make it so extreme. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and Prime Minister Stephen Harper owe it to the citizens of Ontario to adjust the system. Shedding some light on an age-old problem I have been spending a fair amount of time in downtown Oshawa as of late, noting the movements of a number of denizens of darkness as I work on a series about street prostitu- tion. There is a fascinating and terrible dynamic at play on “the track” in the area southeast of King and Simcoe. This is foremost a residential area, where most people take pride in their homes and seek, like the rest of us, the refuge home provides. But that peace is continually threat- ened and occasionally shattered by what goes on just beyond their porch- es and fences. The streets are where prostitutes ply their trade and where the pimps, drug dealers and johns, who are inex- tricably linked to them, prowl. Spend time on these streets and you will see the dance: The girls walking, or lingering, in shadows, and the johns, nameless men in nondescript ve- hicles, ceaselessly cruising, seeking what they crave -- quick, anonymous, loveless sex, a service provided by these women. Greasy $20 bills change hands, then are shuffled again when the pimps and crack dealers get their share of the action. Around and around and around it goes. People who are cognizant of what is happening here continually make analogies about circles. Every- body plays a role: the girls are hapless servants, bound by drug addiction, fear, psychological issues and most particularly by the pimps, their ex- ploiters. And the johns -- well, the johns are perhaps the most despicable of the lot. They are aware of what they are doing and to whom they are doing it. They callously use the hookers, they betray their spouses and they disre- gard utterly the residents in whose neighbourhoods they go about their filthy business. There is talk in the neighbourhood of improvements, such as better street lighting, to help address the problem. And it may seem like a simplistic ap- proach to such a complex problem, but it is a start. Think of it like this: johns are akin to roaches and, like roaches, they tend to scatter when a light is shone on them. Wo men’s lives are devastated by street prostitution. If these lives are to be reclaimed, they must first be taken out of harm’s way. That begins and ends with the anon- ymous man we call john. The vice-principal started asking Anne questions. “‘Does he do this?’ I said yeah. Then she said, ‘Oh, I’ll bet he does this.’ And I said yeah! And then she said, ‘I bet he can’t do this.’ And I said, Yes! She knows my kid!” Anne told Justin about Wasdell. He was happier, just knowing he might not return to his old school. “Even stand- ing in a brand-new school, not knowing anyone or anything, he looked taller,” says his mother. Previous peer abuse “Justin arrived on our doorstep in March 2005,” says Wasdell principal Elizabeth Moxley-Paquette. “He was bullied at his previous school. He was a very gentle personality, a gentle spirit but it was because he had fear.” No one realized how deeply fearful Justin was until a therapist took the students through an exercise using concentric rings to illustrate personal boundaries. “Justin took that idea but shifted it, and it was an interesting shift. He drew a series of concentric rings that filled the page, putting little sticks around each one of those circles--thousands of sticks. He had enough courage to show it to his mom. “He was able to open up to her for the first time. E a c h one of the sticks repre- sented something bad that someone had done to him a t t h e o ther school. It broke her heart. It broke all of our hearts,” said Moxley-Paquette. “So he came as a beaten-up child in many ways, at least emotionally. H e relaxed here, when he saw that it was a safe environment.” “He became a man with a briefcase and he worked very hard. He could see that this school understood him better. His mom saw instant changes.” Masson said, “Within three weeks, he was telling time. Then he started asking me about politics. Now he’s into coin collecting, wanting to know about the history of the coins. It’s like a dam has broken and the waters are rushing through.” His path is not complete, but in a little over a year, he’s made tr emen- dous gains. And while many look forward to a time when they can leave their jobs, they don’t necessarily see retirement as a time to rest. Canadians are retiring earlier and living longer than just 25 years ago. According to Statistics Canada, the median retirement age in Canada today is 61, down from 65 a gen- eration ago. At the same time, Canadian retirees are living longer than they ever have before. Statistics Canada also reports that both senior men and women are living on average well into their 80s - and it’s not unusual today for Canadians to live into their 90s and beyond. “A s active, healthy lifestyles and medi- cal advances continue to increase the life spans of retirees, more and more Canadi- ans will have to plan for the very real pos- sibility of living in retirement for 30 to 40 years,” says Peter Drake, vice president of retirement and investment solutions at Fi- delity Investments Canada Limited. Couple this phenomenon with an in- creasingly popular desire to continue to lead an active lifestyle, and for many, life in retirement may not look so diff erent after all. Many people are choosing a “phased re- tirement” with a transition period between work and retirement. According to the Fidelity Canada 2006 Retirement Survey, 55 per cent of Canadians over 45 years old are planning to take some form of work in retirement and a further 74 per cent are thinking of volunteering their time to local charities and organizations. W hether you plan on transitioning into retirement or jumping right in, a written retirement income plan, built with the help of a fi nancial advisor is a great place to start. It will put you on track to defi ne retirement in your own terms and ensure you can continue doing what you love. Elliot Lake offers this in addition to an unmatched natural beauty and all of the recreation and leisure activities you desire. CANADA’S LEADING PUBLICATION FOR TODAY’S FIFTY-PLUS LIFESTYLES Now that you’ve gotten older the house may seem much more of a burden than it used to be. You’re thinking about downsiz- ing, but where will you go? You’re still in good health, so a nursing home isn’t really an option. How about moving to a smaller residence in a retirement community? If you need a bit more help, an assisted living centre is another option. Retirement communities If you are relatively healthy and can take care of yourself with ease, then moving to a retirement community might be for you. In the past decade, thousands of retire- ment communities have been built across the country. Price and size varies according to the amenities off ered. Some communi- ties, for example, may consist of apartments and base your rent on your fi xed income, whereas others may off er houses ranging in price from $130,000 to $150,000, with ac- cess to tennis courts, golf courses and more. Built with the senior in mind, many of the homes in retirement communities are nearly maintenance-free, with a lawn care service on site. In addition, most retirement communities have a recreational centre as well as access to public transportation. Assisted living If you are relatively healthy but have trouble performing some of the activities of daily living, an assisted living community may be the better choice for you. Licensed by the province or municipality in which you reside, assisted living communities are designed for seniors who need regular help with daily activities, such as bathing, dress- ing, walking and taking medication, but who do not need a nursing facility. Most assisted living communities consist of small apartments, each with an emergency call support system supported by around-the- c lock staff . Many also provide three meals a day in a common dining room, housekeep- ing and laundry services, transportation, exercise programs and recreational activi- ties. Assisted living can be expensive, with prices ranging from $2,000 to $4,000 per month. Still for many, the option is better than the alternative, a nursing home. In some communities, the basic fee covers all of the services off ered; in others, the basic fee covers a limited number of services with other services available for an additional fee. Most assisted living communities rent their units, so residents are free to leave on rather short notice if their health should deteriorate. Some may even have a nursing home on site. Today, a new type of assisted living com- munity is cropping up. Th ese communities mix senior residents with younger residents, such as single mothers and college students, giving seniors the chance to be mentors. In this type of community, seniors provide day care and mentoring, while families and stu- dents help seniors with everyday activities, like cleaning house, doing the laundry and going grocery shopping. Most communities are supported by private contributions and city, provincial and federal grants. Rent is usually low, and all residents must promise to do their part. Many seniors prefer this type of housing, as they feel needed and part of a family. Housing for seniors no longer extends just to nursing homes. Today seniors have a variety of options to choose from, and fi nding them is easier than ever. Perus- ing through your local Yellow Pages or searching for retirement or assisted living communities on the Internet will provide a multitude of options. As with a nursing home, however, it is best to check out the facilities for yourself. Take a family member along with you, talk to the residents at the facility, ask the staff questions and always seek referrals. Th ese are your golden years; you don’t want to spend them moving from one place to another. Retirement living options go beyond nursing homes EARLYBIRD Heading South Next Season? Instead, with Barrie up 3-0 in the series, the game was to be played last night (after our deadline) in Bar- rie, weather permitting. It marks the third time in the series that weather conditions have wreaked havoc on the proceedings. Game 1 was rained out in Barrie last weekend, while Game 3 in Oshawa was called after five in- nings because of thunderstorms. The Baycats won that game 2-0, thus giv- ing them the 3-0 series lead. Should Oshawa have won last night, it is still unknown when Game 5, likely in Oshawa, would be played. [ Football ] Dolphins football semifinals today DURHAM — The Ajax-Pickering Dolphins peewee football team plays the Brampton Maddogs today (Sun- day) with a trip to the Allstar Peewee Football League championship on the line. The Dolphins and Maddogs kick off the APFL semifinal game at 11:30 a.m. at Pickering’s Kinsmen Park on Sandy Beach Road. The Dolphins earned the right to play Brampton after whipping the Wentworth Panthers 32-7 in a quar- ter-f inal game July 30. The other semifinal pits the Brantford Bisons against the Cam- bridge Lions. [ Golf ] Claremont woman seventh PICKERING — A Claremont golfer finished in a seventh-place tie after Thursday’s third and final round of the 2006 Investors Group Ontario Senior Women’s Championship at To r onto Golf Club in Mississauga. Kathy Pilkey finished in a three- way tie for seventh after shooting a final round 83 to post a 249 total (24- over par). Susan Wickware, of Pickering, who was third after the second round on Wednesday, shot an 89 on Thurs- day to fall to 10th place with an overall score of 252 (27-over par). Other area golfers in the field were Debbie McDonald, of Clare- mont, who finished 16th (256 total score) and Angela Colm, of Ajax, who finished 23rd (263 score). Luciano hopes luck, speed will carry him to kart podium By Al Rivett Sports Editor AJAX — When the rubber hits the road next for an Ajax youth, he’ll put the pedal to the medal against the top kart racers in the country. Cory Luciano, 12, leaves for Ed- monton on Monday to compete at the Canadian National Karting Championship later in the week, zooming around just slightly more than a one-kilometre track against approximately 30 other top young drivers. The precocious driver will wheel his two-stroke kart that can hit approximately 80 miles per hour in the Junior Rotax Max category for drivers aged 12 to 15. Luciano hopes his experience in Edmonton will be better than last year’s nationals in Montreal. There, he qualified for the final, and started from the ninth position. His racing day was short-lived, however, as a broken chain resulted in a DNF (did not finish). “Yeah, I hope the experience will be better for me than last year. But, it did give me more experience,” he says. He’s already shipped his 2-cycle- engine kart to Alberta, and will begin practice sessions on Wednes- day and Thursday, with heats run on Friday and Saturday. The goal is to qualify as close to the front as possible for Sunday’s 25-lap final. If he comes in the top three he’ll be eligible to compete for Canada at the worlds in Portugal in November. A top finish will mean his airfare, not to mention a kart and gear, will be paid for at the worlds. Luciano’s kart racing career began at age seven when a father-son trip to Toronto’s Exhibition Place for a Car Club show ended with his dad purchasing a used kart. Soon after, he joined the Good- wood Kart Club and, during his first season of racing, earned a first- place finish in one of his Cadet-level races. He notes he enjoys everything about the racing experience. “I like speed, and just the way the races are run,” says Luciano, who hopes to one day graduate to an open-wheel racing series, with an eye toward Formula One. “Sometimes I like some tracks more than others. I’ve met a lot of friends through karting,” he says. This season has been a breakout campaign for Luciano on a number of fronts. During the winter months, he was winding his way through courses in Florida, making stops at Homestead, West Palm Beach and Ocala where he participated in a six-race series. Overall, he finished seventh out of 35 drivers. “There were a lot of people from Ontario,” says Glen Luciano, Cory’s father, who also doubles as his me- chanic. “The karting was at a high level of competition. There were people (in the series) from all over the world.” This summer, in addition to rac- ing as a member of two area kart clubs -- the Goodwood and Mos- port kart clubs -- he’s also a fixture on the Sunoco/Ron Fellows Karting Series where he races in three dif- ferent classes: Junior Rotax Max, the F1K Junior (2-cycle) and the Cana- dian Junior Heavy (4-cycle). So far in the points standings, Lu- ciano is in the lead in Junior Rotax Max class, while sitting second in F1K. He’s fourth in Junior Heavy. The highlight of the Sunoco/Ron Fellows series thus far has been the Barrie Grand Prix weekend in June. In the biggest racing weekend in the series, Luciano finished second in both the Junior Rotax Max and the F1K classes. His other finish was a fifth in Junior Heavy. Another highlight was joining a group of 18 kart drivers at the Mol- son Grand Prix for an exhibition race on the race track in early July. The day also included a trip to pit row for the kart drivers. “It was really neat to see them working on their cars,” says Luciano. “The track was awesome to be on.” Luciano has two races remaining in the Sunoco/Ron Fellows series, the penultimate races at Mosport in Clarington Sept. 1 to 3, with the final racing weekend Sept. 15 to 17. Jennifer Roberts/ News Advertiser photo Cory Luciano will be at the controls of his kart next week as he hopes to track down a national championship in Ed- monton. The 12-year-old Ajax resident has been racing karts since age seven. This year, he’s racing not only at the club level with the Goodwood Kart Club, but also in three classes in the Sunoco/Ron Fellows Kart Racing Series. PICKERING — After competing against high-level European com- petition this summer, a Pickering teen is on his way to the U.S. to con- tinue his soccer career. Matthew Groves, 18, has signed on for a full athletic scholarship in soccer to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, which has captured the NCAA Division 1 Atlantic 10 Confer- ence title numerous times over the years. Groves leaves today (Sunday) to begin training with the Dukes. Groves chose Duquesne out of five scholarship offers. Duquesne and the Univer- sity of Rhode Island were his top two picks. After careful con- sideration, however, and after travel- ling to each institution, Duquesne won out. “Both are great institutions for ac- ademics, but it came down to how the players at Duquesne treated me on my visit to the university for three days,” says Groves. “It was like a family, team environment and that is how I like it. They have a great academic reputation and I have full access to three cafeterias, a hospital on campus, weight room, field turf in a Dome for the winter and a year- round trainer.” Groves, who’ll play midfield with the Dukes, will see his first action at the Bradley University tournament in Peoria, Illinois, where the Dukes play Western Michigan on Aug. 25 and host Bradley on Aug. 26. When the Dunbarton High School graduate is not playing for the Dukes, Groves intends to join the Kalshure FC (Germany) train- ing squad on each break from his athletic scholarship. This summer, Groves and the To- ronto Metro Lions under-19 all-stars travelled to Germany to compete in the pre-World Cup tourney.
