PICKERING — There are now a
few hundred extra eyes and ears on
the street in Pickering’s Pine Creek
neighbourhood.
The Pine Creek Area Neighbour-
hood Watch was endorsed by coun-
cil at the July 24 meeting. The new
group was endorsed by the Durham
Regional Police Service on June 20.
Richard Munderich started orga-
nizing the chapter in the Glenanna
and Dixie roads area. He’d always
thought the program was a good
idea, but became motivated after
the birth of his first child when he
began going for runs in the evening,
after dark.
“I noticed all kinds of things hap-
pening in the parks around the
school, drug dealing and teenagers
loitering,” he said.
Mr. Munderich felt he had to do
something or the neighbourhood
would slowly get worse. He began
talking to his neighbours and found
some people had wanted to start a
Watch in the past, but the number
requirements seemed too daunting.
They began signing people up and
a year later they finally had enough
people turn out at the meeting to get
their chapter endorsed by police.

PICKERING — An Austrian man
died after being found in a Pickering
public pool Wednesday afternoon.
Shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 2,
the body of 37-year-old Mir Najibul-
lah Abbassi was found at the bottom
of the Pickering Recreation Com-
plex pool on
Valley Farm
Road with no
vital signs.
“It was a
normal pub-
lic swimming
event,” said
Tom Quinn,
Pickering’s
chief admin-
istrative of-
ficer, adding
he closed the pool for the rest of the
day because of the severity of the
incident.
According to Durham Region-
al Police, witnesses saw the man
swimming lengths shortly before a
lifeguard found him underwater in
the diving area.
A statement released by the City of
Pickering says the lifeguards pulled
the unresponsive man onto the pool
deck and administered CPR and
used a defibrillator. Emergency per-
sonnel also made attempts to revive
the man, who was rushed to Rouge
Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital.
An autopsy was scheduled for
Thursday to determine the cause of
death, but police did not anticipate
being able to release the results until
this morning (Friday). The two on-
duty lifeguards report there was no
diving or horseplay at the time of the
incident. Investigators are not ruling
out a medical episode.
Mr. Quinn said the pool was re-
opened Thursday and staff are re-
ceiving counselling.
“Something like this, this is real
life, it hits people differently,” said
Mr. Quinn.
Currently, he is waiting for the
coroner’s report on the cause of
death. He is also collecting other
documentation, such as the police
report and information on who was
working and how many people were
in the pool, which he’ll use for a re-
port to Pickering council.
“It’s a very long process,” said Mr.
Quinn. “There’s a number of stan-
dard things you must do.”

Pickering students
taking part in initiative
By David Blumenfeld
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Five high school
students from Pickering are get-
ting an insiders’ look this summer
at what it’s like to be a member of
Durham Regional Police Service.
The students, who are all from
Pine Ridge Secondary School, are
taking part in a Youth in Policing
initiative set up by the Ministry of
Children and Youth Services. The
intent is to give young people an
opportunity to work in a field they
might otherwise not consider as a
career path.
“Many of them -- probably I
would suggest half of these peo-
ple -- have never even given a
thought to being a police offi-
cer and may still not,” Durham
Police Chief Vernon White said.
“That’s not what it’s about. It’s re-
ally about giving them a hope that
they can be anything they want to
be.”
As part of the program, stu-
dents are situated in paid summer
placements and work in various
police departments such as com-
munications, human resources or
with the Police Services Board.
Alex Del Duca, 17, said he would
probably be “flipping burgers”
this summer if his principal didn’t
suggest he and his fellow students
take part.
“This is a good program be-
cause it gives individuals a
unique experience and look on
policing in general,” he said. “It’s
an opportunity students normally
wouldn’t get in a summer place-
ment and learn about the things
they want to do.”
Dariusz Kwiatkowski, 18, said
the Youth in Policing initiative
has given him a first-hand look at
what policing is and what it takes
to be successful in the field. By
working in 19 Division and then
Durham Police Headquarters, he
said he has learned both sides of
the spectrum -- the front lines of
police work and then the admin-
istration.
“This is something I’ve been
dreaming about all my life,” said
Mr. Kwiatkowski, who plans on
taking a policing course at Dur-
ham College in September. “I
think this is the best opportunity
a person can get.”
On July 31, Mary Ann Cham-
bers, Minister of Children and
Yo uth Services, visited Durham
Police Headquarters in Whitby to
see the initiative in action. She
said the program was originally
intended just for Toronto this
year, but at the urging of Chief
White it was expanded to Durham
Region.
“These are kids who are still
in school... but certainly it’s an
opportunity for them to have an
experience they wouldn’t other-
wise have had,” Ms. Chambers
said. “These are very, very special
employment opportunities.”
Prior to establishing the ini-
tiative in Toronto, Ms. Chambers
said she was told young people
would not take an interest in the
program. That hunch proved un-
true when more than 1,100 ap-
plications were received.
“I think the benefits is that
young people get closer to the po-
lice -- relationship building works
both ways -- and hopefully this
will help them to see policing in a
very positive light,” she said.
The three other students par-
ticipating in the youth policing
are 17 year olds Aiesha James and
Samantha Mayers, and 19-year-
old Mark MacMillan.

crime to homeowners and their
property.
It generally takes about eight
or nine months to get a neigh-
bourhood watch program up and
running. A minimum of 75 per
cent of the identified geographic
area must sign up. Once this is
done an endorsement meeting is
held in the community by police;
60 to 75 per cent of signed mem-
ber households must attend this
meeting.
Another new Neighbourhood
Watch in the Appleview Road
and Sparton Court was also re-
cently endorsed by DRPS, but it
hasn’t come to council yet.
Morgen Dobson, regional
neighbourhood watch co-ordi-
nator with Durham police, said
a lot of communities have joined
the Neighbourhood Watch pro-
gram recently. There have been
16 new ones in the past year and
a half bringing the total in Dur-
ham to 170.
The program benefits both
residents and police.
“Everyone of the inspectors
will say this is the greatest pro-
gram because it is a true partner-
ship between the police and the
community,” Ms. Dobson said.
On average when a new Watch
is created residents notice the
crime rate goes down in the area,
but Ms. Dobson said this only
stays true when the program is
actively practised.
The DRPS trains new neigh-
bourhood watch members using
a three-pronged approach:
communication, which in-
volves knowing when to contact
police and with what informa-
tion; awareness, which includes
knowing what is normal for your
neighbourhood and knowing
how to prevent crime; and em-
powerment, which means real-
izing they can make a difference
if they work with police to be the
eyes and ears on their streets.
City staff will soon be putting
up the Neighbourhood Watch
signs in the Pine Creek area.
For more information about
the Neighbourhood Watch pro-
gram, e-mail neighwatch@drps.

PICKERING — A witness
helped police corral a suspect
after a stolen pickup slammed
into two other vehicles and burst
into flames during a pursuit
early Wednesday morning in
Pickering.
Durham police officers were
called to the area of Finch Av-
enue and Liverpool Road around
2 a.m. Wednesday after a report
of a vehicle theft in progress.
When cops attempted to pull
the stolen truck over the driver
accelerated away, running a red
light at Kingston and Liverpool
roads. The pickup was involved
in two separate collisions in the
intersection before bursting into
flames, police said. The driver
kicked out a window and ran off
on foot, but was tackled by a wit-
ness and held for officers.
Corey Neil, 21, of Ritson Road
South in Oshawa, faces a number
of charges including theft, dan-
gerous driving, possession of a
controlled substance and breach
of probation.
No one was seriously hurt, but
police said the three vehicles in-
volved have been written off.
PICKERING — Two suspects
are being sought after a man
was stabbed during a brawl on
a Pickering street early Satur-
day.
Durham police said one
victim sustained a minor stab
wound to his torso and an-
other was whipped with a belt
during the fracas, which broke
out after an altercation among
four men around 4:30 a.m. in
the area of Kingston and Liv-
erpool roads.
The suspects are identified
as two white men.

DURHAM — There was a lot of

The storm that blew through

The trees were being cleaned

We all must do our part
To the editor:
I have been reading about people complaining about the new
composting and recycling system in Durham. People have been
complaining about the inconvenience, the raccoon issues and
the amount of time they have to spend sorting out their garbage.
I understand people’s concerns, however, let’s remember what
this is really all about, and why this program was created.
I am 11 years old and I am really concerned. What will the
planet be like when I am a mother or grandmother? If we don’t
follow this program it will only get worse.
Twenty years from now we can’t be just sitting around saying
‘G ee, too bad we didn’t do anything when we had the chance.’
By then it will be too late. So, ask yourselves now, is today’s in-
convenience really a big deal compared to the good it will do for
us in the future?
We all create waste and we all buy things with packages that
we throw out and don’t even think about. I think it is our indi-
vidual responsibility as people on this planet to be responsible
for our own waste. If nothing else. I think one person can make
a difference. I am upset and I could not imagine anyone not
caring about our planet and the place we live. If people just keep
forgetting about what we are doing to our environment then
you can say goodbye to a clean and healthy future. Take action
and start caring because once you know what is happening, you
can’t not do anything.
Think of your personal contributions to the landfills every
year, and think of who you would influence in a good way if you
did your part. Please talk, think and encourage others. This re-
ally matters.
Jessica Haines,
Ajax
You can become
an everyday hero
Most people look forward to summer because it allows
them to enjoy the great outdoors.
But going outside and getting active can sometimes,
unfortunately, lead to trouble. Accidents happen and lives are
lost. Accident survivors often require blood to survive. It’s this
life-saving fluid that’s in short supply these days.
For that reason Canadian Blood Services has four blood donor
clinics planned for Ajax and Pickering in August. Hopefully Ajax
and Pickering residents will take note and make a date to give
their share.
Because as recent clinics around the region have demon-
strated, and it has historically been the case as well, the summer
time is often the most difficult to meet blood drive targets.
With many residents on holidays there are fewer arms to draw
blood from which results in the drop in donations. The problem
is further complicated by the fact that summer brings an in-
creased demand for blood.
To deal with the annual summertime blood shortage, Cana-
dian Blood Services is holding its annual ‘Sirens for Life’ blood
donor challenge. The challenge engages emergency services
workers -- police, firefighters, EMS -- to save lives by donating
blood during the summer. The goal is to raise 1,100 units of
whole blood from July 1 to Sept. 4. Residents are also encour-
aged to support their local police, fire and emergency medical
services’ departments by donating blood on their behalf.
Nurses who took part in a recent Durham blood donor clinic
had a phrase for residents who donate blood on a regular basis.
They called them Everyday Heroes. It’s a goal that nearly every-
body in the community between 17 and 71 should strive for.
If you know of someone who has ever needed blood or if you,
yourself ever needed it, you realize how important the simple
act of giving can be. It’s time more of us took an active interest in
blood donation. It’s time more of us became Everyday Heroes.
Growing p rogram helps
deliver safer communities
I n the good old days, neighbours
watched out for one another, knew
what was normal and what wasn’t
on their street, and kept an eye on the
neighbourhood children.
It might be 2006, but several commu-
nities in Pickering and Durham are sign-
ing up for a program that is reminiscent
of those days.
The internationally recognized Neigh-
bourhood Watch program can now be
found in 170 communities in Durham
with new ones organizing right at this
moment.
Morgen Dobson is the Neighbour-
hood Watch co-ordinator for Durham
Regional Police Service. In the past year
and a half she has helped organize 16
new chapters, including the Pine Creek
Area group. The new chapters have
helped put thousands more eyes and
ears on the street to help keep Durham
safe.
And on average those extra eyes and
ears do make their community safer.
With break-and-enters, vandalism and
other crimes making the news in Dur-
ham, it’s nice to see residents taking con-
trol of their neighbourhoods and feeling
empowered enough to want to do some-
thing to stop crime in their community
or make sure it doesn’t start.
The process to form a new chapter is
a long one involving signing up three
quarters of your neighbours and then
getting a majority of those people to
come to a meeting. It shows a lot of
dedication on the part of organizers and
they should be recognized for wanting
to make their community a better place.
Members of new chapters are trained
by the police on what to watch out for
and when to call the police, as well as
what information to relay when they
call. Being aware of what’s normal in
your neighbourhood can be beneficial,
even if you don’t belong to a formal
Neighbourhood Watch chapter.
It’s also nice to hear that residents
and police are working together to make
Pickering a nice place to live and raise a
family. People should feel comfortable
in calling their police department when
they think something isn’t right at a
neighbour’s house or in the local park.
Police welcome and need that help.
With municipal budgets being what they
are it helps with resources if police know
what to look out for or where to target,
for example, if a certain street had a rash
of car break-ins on a Friday night.
Neighbourhood Watch chapters also
help to foster a sense of community as
people get to know their neighbours and
feel more comfortable outside their own
home. That alone is a good reason to
give it a try.

pears every third Friday. E-mail

Green bins proving
popular on store shelves
By Erin Hatfield
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Bio bags are being
bought up briskly under the Region’s
new green bin program.
So much so, that a number of people
have complained Region-approved bags
are tough to find, including Anne Drys-
dale.
“Everywhere you go they are sold out,”
the Ajax resident said. “(The Region)
wants us to do this but wouldn’t it have
been nice if they had made sure the bags
were available.”
Ms. Drysdale said she has gone to a
number of area stores on several occa-
sions and as of yet has been unable to
locate approved biodegradable bags for
her kitchen green bin.
“This is new for me, composting,” she
explained. “And I am trying to be a good
citizen but I just want to be able to pick
them up when I grocery shop.”
The Region’s website lists 80 stores in
Durham that sell approved biodegrad-
able bags. Bags must display one of five
logos on the packaging.
Shannon Payne, a Durham waste
technician, said regional staff has been
visiting area stores and checking on the
availability of appropriate bags.
They found most stores did have the
approved bags in stock and the few that
didn’t expected more to arrive in short
order.
A problem some consumers have en-
countered, she said, was that store as-
sociates have not been educated on the
new green bin system and what bags are
available.
“We have been in contact with the
store managers and talking with staff,”
Ms. Payne said. “Some stores are really
getting on board.”
She said the Region did encounter a
problem at a store in Ajax telling con-
sumers that an unapproved brand of bag
was appropriate.
Meanwhile, the producer of the Bio-
sak, the most prominent brand on Dur-
ham shelves, admits the company has
had some trouble keeping up with de-
mand for the product.
“We are extremely pleased with the
tremendous response,” said Wayne Riv-
iere, marketing manager with W. Ralston
Canada Inc. “So much so that we have
had problems keeping up with the de-
mand. We have stepped up production
to meet the unexpected demand but it
will take a couple of weeks for us to get
ahead of it.”
As for the cost, which is higher than
traditional garbage bags, Mr. Riviere said
the economy scale hasn’t kicked in to
bring the price down.
Where traditional garbage bags are
made of oil or petroleum products, the
Biosak is made from corn and vegetable
products meaning the cost to manufac-
ture the compostable bags is greater.
“There should be an evolution to bring
the price down,” he said.
A Metroland Durham Region Media
Group tour this week of stores on the
Region’s website found that most had
approved bags, primarily the Biosak
brand.
A salesperson in Bowmanville at TSC
at Duke and Baseline wasn’t aware of
what bags where appropriate, but di-
rected a reporter to customer service.
The representative there said the store
did carry one brand but that it was sold
out. In Oshawa, Agustino’s and Nancy’s
No Frills on Bloor Street East had both
large and small Biosak bags. There were
a few boxes left of each size.
In Uxbridge the only store carrying
approved bags was Wal-Mart. However,
Canadian Tire carries them, but says it is
out of stock.
The Canadian Tire on Garden Street
in Whitby not only had plenty of Biosak
bags, but it had a huge display inside the
door with green bins, blue boxes and a
sign that read, ‘Region approved.’
In Ajax the Shoppers Drug Mart on
Harwood Avenue South had a bin of
bags just inside the door, as well as two
sizes of bags on the shelves.

More than 1,000
students to participate
in various activities
By Crystal Crimi
Staff Writer
DURHAM — With World Cup
battles and Olympic events, Durham
College is a busy place this summer.
During July and August, the Os-
hawa campus is hosting its one-week
summer camps for soccer, basketball,
baseball-softball, tennis, volleyball,
golf, inline and multi-sports, elite
volleyball, and a volleyball coaching
clinic.
“We’ll take in well over 1,000 peo-
ple this summer,” said Ken Babcock,
director of athletics at Durham Col-
lege and the University of Ontario
Institute of Technology. “It will be like
a mini campus in summer.”
For students mostly ages eight to
13, the sports camp experience in-
cludes everything from learning to
tie shoes properly in the basketball
camp, to swinging a racket in tennis
camp.
“It’s sports specific, it’s not a day
camp,” said Mr. Babcock. “You’re
going to learn everything about sports
from ‘A’ to ‘Z’. They’ll leave a player
that understands the sport that much
better.”
Mike Duggan, an athletic officer
and summer camp co-ordinator, said
inexperienced sports players learn
how to play the game, while more fre-
quent players can tweak their skills.
“If you had trouble and never
played tennis before, at least you’ll
know the fundamentals and be able
to go out there and hit a ball with a
buddy,” said Mr. Duggan.
In baseball, participants learn
throwing mechanics, fielding, steal-
ing bases, running, hitting and more.
“We break down the basic compo-
nents of a sport,” said Mr. Duggan.
For the golf camp, instruction in-
cludes being introduced to etiquette
and rules, gripping a club, chip-
ping and putting, and inserting tees.
There’s also a chance to play nine
holes to put new skills to the test.
“It’s really a fun format because
golf can be boring to start,” said Mr.
Babcock.
Along with learning about sports,
campers also get to participate in
games and skills competitions.
“Basketball kids get to play on the
same court as our college varsity
team,” said Mr. Babcock.
He said the camps allow students
the opportunity to use state-of-the-
art facilities and get introduced to the
college campus.
“Lots of young people on campus
is really a neat thing,” said Mr. Bab-
cock.
Mr. Duggan added the kids also
learn life skills, such as respect and
discipline.
The camps run from July to the
third week of August, from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m., and are $150 a week. For more
information, visit www.durhamcol-
lege.ca.

R ecording memories
and reading can help
keep skills sharp
By Crystal Crimi
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Between bike rid-
ing and swimming this summer,
students can keep their brains
active as well.
By creating memory scrapbooks
and discussing what they’ve read,
youth can exercise their learn-
ing during summer vacation, said
Tom Hawks, director of the Oxford
Learning Centre in Pickering.
“Keep an active mind, keep kids
thinking and exploring, inquir-
ing and discussing in addition to
playing and enjoying and soaking
up the sun,” said Mr. Hawks.
He said research shows that
over summer vacation students
lose some of what they’ve learned.
To reduce the loss, parents can
encourage their children to ac-
tively read and think about what
they’ve read, said Mr. Hawks.
“A way to help is talking with
your child about what they’re
reading,” said Mr. Hawks. He
said to ask kids their thoughts on
books to get them thinking.
Creating a summer adventure
book is another of Mr. Hawks’
suggestions. By creating a daily
journal, students can write and
draw what they’ve been doing
over the summer.
“That’s my best idea for writ-
ing,” he said.
“We did this with our younger
child, he was really a reluctant
writer,” he said. “In the beginning
it was like pulling teeth, but once
we got going and he could see
and look back a few pages... when
we looked again after a couple
of weeks and once he got into it,
he had something to take pride
in and reflect on and his writ-
ing improved immensely over the
summer.”
For reading, parents and chil-
dren can take summer trips to the
library together and make it a fun
experience, he said.
To keep minds on math, Mr.
Hawks suggested involving youth
in daily routines such as grocery
shopping. He said kids can do ad-
dition in their head for the items
purchased, estimate costs and
figure out which products offer
the best value.
For pizza dinners, they can
work on their fractions and by
baking they can learn measure-
ments. For younger kids, they can
estimate the amount of berries
in a box, then dump them out
and count them. During drives,
families can break the trip into
legs and estimate how long it will
take to complete each one, said
Mr. Hawks.
“It goes back to the beginning
about keeping the mind sharp,”
he said.
Mr. Hawks said students also
need some structure in their
summer holidays so it doesn’t
just pass by without them doing
the things they want. Keeping a
summer or family planner with
daily goals, such as reading, can
be helpful in making sure learn-
ing and other goals are accom-
plished.
Mr. Hawks added a good prepa-
ration for the next grade is a good
understanding of the last grade.
A new school year usually begins
with a review of the last and if
students start September ahead
of the game, it can increase their
confidence and help them foster
a positive attitude.

Women from
across the U.S.
and Canada gather
for barbecue
By Stefanie Swinson
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Rain didn’t
put a damper on the spirit
of the ‘Ovarian Cancer’
women.
Approximately 20 women
from across the United States
and Canada gathered re-
cently in Sandi Pniauskas’s
Whitby backyard for some
food, fun, and chat. The
group of women met in an
ovarian cancer chatroom at
www.ACOR.org.
“My doctor actually told
me about this online group
of women and I came home
from the hospital and got on-
line and found them,” said
Cindy Owens of Stafford, Vir-
ginia.
“They’ve been my lifeline.
I don’t have any real sisters...
I just immediately bonded
with them, because you can
go online any time day or
night. You could wake up in
the middle of the night, be-
cause you can’t sleep and log
on and say, ‘I feel really de-
pressed,’ or ‘I have this weird
pain,’ and someone would
immediately write back and
say ‘Oh, I had that... that’s re-
ally OK.’ That was wonderful.
It was almost a year before I
met any of them in person,
and I can’t even explain the
feeling, it was just so wonder-
ful.”
The women meet each
year at the OCNA (Ovarian
Cancer National Alliance)
conference in Washington,
D.C.
“We attend conferences,
and typically we meet each
other maybe once a year or
twice a year but because of
the functions of the confer-
ences, the seminars, we
never have enough time to
chat,” said Ms. Pniauskas, a
seven-year survivor and co-
organizer of the event.
“So we decided that what
we’d like to do is simply have
a chat session.”
The event was planned in
under a week.
The barbecue gave Marta
Stothers of Toronto the op-
portunity to meet the women
she speaks to daily, online.
She has never been to an
OCNA conference.
“I’m here because I wanted
faces to put to what it looks
like to not only survive but
to be happy. Cancer isn’t a
death sentence. People die of
it, but it’s also a way for many
people to learn how to live.
These people here are living,
and I’m living, and that’s re-
ally what’s important.”
Lots of different activities
were planned for the day, but
three hours into the event,
everyone was still chatting,
laughing, and getting to know
one another better.
“I don’t think there’s going
to be any games going on, no-
body cares about that,” said
five-year survivor, Annema-
rie Decarlo of Washington,
D.C. “It’s seeing each other,
that’s the most important
thing from month to month,
from year to year. Just sort of
to touch each other and to re-
alize we’re still alive, that we
have overcome this disease,
even if it is just for a short
time.”
One thing that was in-
cluded during the day was an
online chat on tealtalk.com
with those women who were
far too sick to attend, includ-
ing the co-organizer, Frances
Johnson of Middletown, N.Y.
September marks the ninth
year for the OCNA confer-
ence.

LCBO aims
to help

changes
DURHAM — Established
in 1964, the Traffic Injury
Research Foundation (TIRF)
aims to reduce traffic-related
deaths and injuries.
Beginning Aug. 1, all 600
LCBO stores in Ontario set
up donation boxes at check-
out counters in support of
TIRF.
A large portion of TIRF’s
research is directed toward
areas such as identifying
high-risk groups of drinking
drivers, developing cost-ef-
fective practical solutions,
and monitoring the size of
the problem.
The LCBO’s provincewide
donation boxes raised hun-
dreds of thousands of dollars
in 2005, which benefited 26

Questions
Q. Why are the lights on at night at the regional
headquarters building in Whitby?
A. According to Glenn Kippen, director of support
services for Durham Region, some emergency light-
ing is on 24 hours a day. Other lights are on motion
sensors for the benefit of cleaners, who are on site
until midnight, and for security staff. He notes Dur-
ham Regional Police occupy the third floor 24 hours
a day, and police and security are constantly com-
ing and going from the lower floors.

Former Pickering resident
Walsh leads Downchild Blues
Band into Aug. 11 concert
By Christy Chase
Staff Editor
DURHAM — In 2002, the Downchild
Blues Band played the first Oshawa Jazz
and Blues Festival, thrilling the crowds in
Memorial Park.
“It was a really great night,” said Donnie
“Mr. Downchild” Walsh, founder and lead-
er of the band. “It was a beautiful evening.
The park setting was great.”
This year, the Downchild band returns
to the festival to play its good-times blues
music but the venue will change. The band
will perform in concert Aug. 11 at the Gen-
eral Sikorski Polish Veterans Hall on Ste-
venson Road North. Also on the program
will be Danny Marks, holder of the Toronto
Blues Society’s Blues With A Feeling life-
time achievement award.
The Downchild Blues Band got its start
in the summer of 1969, by Walsh and his
brother, the late Rick Walsh. The band made
its first appearance at Grossman’s Tavern in
To ronto. Named after a classic blues song
by Sonny Boy Williamson, the band has
taken its good-times blues music to arenas,
concert halls, clubs, coffee houses, parks,
cornfields and even a prison or two, play-
ing close to 7,500 gigs. And the band is still
playing.
“We were lucky,” Walsh said of the band’s
longevity and popularity. “We had a hit
(‘Flip Flop and Fly’) after about four years.
We toured all over Canada and the United
States. We were so busy working, we didn’t
have time to stop. We toured extensively.
“This is what I do. I really like the music I
play.”
So do the band’s fans.
“People have a great time,” he said.
“That’s a major part of the equation. People
just have a great time and jump around
and enjoy. If you’ve got the blues and come
listen to Downchild, you’ll get rid of them,”
Walsh said. “That’s basically what the blues
are all about.”
Good-time blues is what Downchild Blues
Band plays, most of it written by guitarist/
songwriter/harmonica player Walsh with
the rest penned by singer Chuck Jackson,
who has been with Downchild 13 years.
The other band members are Michael Fon-
fara, keyboards, formerly of Rhinoceros,
Pat Carey, sax, who has played with jazz
and blues artists including Whitby’s Jack de
Keyzer, Gary Kendall, bass, on his second
stint with the band, and Michael Fitzpat-
rick, drummer, the newest member. All are
award winners as is the band.
Walsh, who once lived in Pickering and
worked in Toronto, said he writes when
the mood strikes him. During his time in
Pickering, the muse quite often struck dur-
ing his long drives to and from work along
the Don Valley Parkway, times when he,
of course, was unable to write anything
down.
He got turned onto the blues as a teen-
ager and knew that was the music for him.
“As soon as I heard the blues, that was
it,” he said, adding it would be some years
before he turned to writing and singing the
blues.
At the Jazz and Blues Festival, the audi-
ence will hear some good old Downchild
tunes and some newer ones, including
those from the band’s latest CD, Come On
In, available in stores everywhere and at
downchild.com. Downchild has produced
more than a dozen albums over the years.
During his down time, Walsh enjoys lis-
tening to all kinds of music and enjoys
boating and fishing. In fact, the morning of
this interview, he was up at 5 a.m. and spent
about three hours fishing on a peaceful cot-
tage country lake.
“It’s fishing, not catching,” he said.
Unlike the blues.
For tickets to the Downchild Blues concert
and more information on the festival, which
runs Aug. 7 to 13, call 1-800-576-1086 or go to

Gut-check time for Henry
Felicien set for stiff
hurdles competition
at senior nationals
By Al Rivett
Sports Editor
PICKERING — For Pickering
Olympian Anson Henry, this
weekend’s Canadian Senior Track
and Field Championships in Ot-
tawa will represent either a step
back or a step forward in a season
that’s had its share of highs and
lows.
The 27-year-old is looking for-
ward to competing in his seventh
national championships, hoping
to improve upon a solid 2005 Ca-
nadian meet where he captured
gold in the 200 metres and silver
in the 100m.
“I’m going to try and get the 100
metres (gold) this year. The main
competition is Pierre Browne and
Nicolas Macrozonaris and my
season has been going a bit better
than theirs, but if I do what I have
to do, everything will take care of
itself,” says Henry before under-
going a workout at the Athletic
Training Professionals (ATP) facil-
ity on Brock Road in Pickering.
There was a bright start to the
current outdoor track campaign,
including setting a new personal
best of 10.12 seconds in the 100m
at the Super Grand Prix event in
Doha, Qatar in May. In that race,
American Justin Gatlin tied the
world record of 9.77 seconds.
But, after a meet in Brazil and
two more events in the U.S., Henry
realized he had to put the brakes
on the season when a nagging
pain turned out to be two tears in
his abdominal area.
“It just kind of got worse over
time. It started at the Common-
wealth Games (in Melbourne,
Australia, where he finished sev-
enth in the 100m), just a small
spot in my stomach. I put heat on
it but, after while, it didn’t work
anymore.”
The abdominal pain meant
Henry had to shut down competi-
tion and speed training through
June, receiving massage therapy
and chiropractic help during that
time. His only exercise was on the
stationary bike.
The rest, he says, has helped
him heal a significant amount.
“I’m not totally healed, but I can
run again,”
he says. “It’s
a lot better
than it was.”
Henry
notes with a
good result,
and if his
abdomen
r esponds
well to his
first major
competition
following the injury, he may con-
tinue on to Europe to continue
the outdoor season. If he suffers a
setback, however, he’s content to
stay in Pickering to continue his
recuperation.
“My main focus is doing what
I have to do at nationals. After
that, I’ll do whatever’s best for
next season. I’ll do it in consulta-
tion with my coach, but I’ll also
listen to my body. If I do (plan to
keep competing), I’ll go to Florida
(to see coach Dan Pfaff at the Uni-
versity of Florida) to touch base
and sharpen up some things. If
not, I haven’t seen my family for a
while, so I could chill out here and
relax,” he says.
Henry isn’t the only Ajax and
Pickering athlete with medals on
their mind. Perdita Felicien, de-
fending Canadian champion and
current national record holder
(12.46 seconds) in the 100m hur-
dles, will be looking to hold off
up-and-comers Priscilla Lopes, of
Whitby, and Angela Whyte, of Ed-
monton, to retain the Canadian
crown.
Felicien has run in only a hand-
ful of events this outdoor season
due to injuries, including a ham-
string injury that’s been hamper-
ing her performances. Of late,
the 25-year-old two-time Olym-
pian and world champion ran to a
sixth-place finish at the DN Galan
meet in Stockholm, Sweden on
July 25 where she ran in 12.87 sec-
onds.
Also competing is Ian Mayne,
of Pickering, in the men’s 3,000m
steeplechase. This summer, Mayne
finished an outstanding track and
field and cross-country career at
the University of Tennessee at
Chattanooga. Ryan Finn, of Ajax,
currently on an athletic scholar-
ship to the University of Kentucky,
is competing in the men’s 800m.
Ta bia Charles, of Pickering, who’s
the reigning NCAA Division 1 out-
door champion in the triple jump,
will compete in that event as well
as the long jump.

Pickering Olympic sprinter Anson Henry pumps iron at Pickering’s Athletic Training Professionals centre under the
watchful eye of Jamie Hollins. Henry’s at the Canadian Senior Track and Field Championships in Ottawa this weekend.
PICKERING — Canadian sprint-
er Anson Henry wouldn’t be drawn
into a debate regarding the inno-
cence or guilt of American Justin
Gatlin, who recently tested positive
for testosterone or other prohibited
steroids after a test administered
by the United States Anti-Doping
Agency.
But, he was nonetheless sad-
dened that his sport is being dragged
through the mud once again by a
high-profile athlete allegedly testing
positive for performance-enhanc-
ing substances.
“It bothers me somewhat, but I’m
not going to let it stop me from run-
ning regardless,” says Henry. “It’s
kind of sad to see how far some
people will go for whatever reason,
whether it’s fame or financial gain,
to take that (steroid) route.
“There’s nothing I can do about it.
I hope everything works out for him.
I wouldn’t wish it upon anybody.”
Gatlin, a co-holder of the men’s
100-metre world record, equalled
the record while running alongside
Henry at the Super Grand Prix meet
in Doha, Qatar in May, posting a
time of 9.77 seconds. Henry finished
fifth in that race in a personal-best
clocking of 10.12 seconds.
It’s not the first time Gatlin has
tested positive for a banned sub-
stance. A previous positive test re-
sulted in a one-year ban.
If the current positive test is borne
out, Gatlin could face a lifetime
ban.
He nry saddened by U.S. sprinter’s positive test

Oshawa junior baseball
team has strong
winning tradition
By Brian McNair
Staff Editor
DURHAM — On paper, Jim Lutton
figures the Oshawa Legionaires wouldn’t
crack the top-5 of the 19 junior teams
competing for an Ontario Baseball Asso-
ciation championship throughout Dur-
ham this long weekend.
Good thing the games are played on
the diamond, not paper.
The Legionaires have a number of in-
tangibles going for them as the embark
on the provincial journey, most notably
a winning tradition and the inspiration
of playing in memory of Troy May, their
former coach who passed away follow-
ing a car accident last month.
“O ne of the things that Troy said was
that one of his biggest thrills was in 1999
when we won the right to go to the na-
tionals for the first time,” says Jim Lutton,
the team’s longtime manager. “He was
instrumental.”
Although 1999 was the first time, it
certainly wasn’t the last that the Le-
gionaires won the provincial elimina-
tion tournament and earned the right to
move on. They also won in 2002, 2003
and last year, when they managed a 3-3
record at the national tournament in
Saskatoon.
So, playing and winning this tourna-
ment at home is nothing new to the
Legionaires.
“If we play up to our capabilities, of
what I expect of the guys, yes I think we
have a good chance of winning, or at
least be around to contest the final,” says
Lutton. “This is like a whole new season.
Everybody is at a whole new level. It’s
top notch. As soon as you walk into the
park, you can feel the excitement.”
Lutton estimates that the favourites
would be the Brantford Braves, Windsor
Selects and East York Bulldogs.
If the Legionaires are to jump up and
contend with those big boys, Lutton says
they will have to play more consistently
than they have throughout the season.
A definite strength is the pitching staff,
which boasts six strong arms, including
three lefties.
“If they’re hot, we’re definitely going to
be heard from,” Lutton says. “They’d be
frontline pitchers on any junior team.”
The Legionaires certainly seemed pre-
pared on Monday, when they pounded
out a 17-1 win over the Thornhill Reds in
Leaside League play. Brent Tamane fell a
home run shy of hitting for the cycle and
drove in six runs, while Chris Papalia
had two hits and four RBIs. Jordan Pros-
per, Adam Groome and Andrew Berg-
man combined on a three-hitter.
Oshawa’s not the only local team com-
peting at the provincial championships,
as Durham will also be represented by
the Whitby Chiefs and Pickering Red
Sox.
All three teams will open up on Fri-
day at 5:15 p.m., with Oshawa playing
the Leaside Royals at Kinsmen Stadium,
Whitby facing the Burlington Bulls at
Iroquois Park and Pickering meeting
East York at Kirkey Field. Portage Park in
Whitby and Neilson Park in Scarborough
will also host games on the weekend.
The tournament wraps up on Monday
at Kinsmen Stadium, with games begin-
ning at 9:30 a.m.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN
(Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of
Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven.
Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate
Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Holy Mary,
Mother of God. Queen of Heaven and Earth. I
humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart
to secure me in my necessity (make request).
There are none that can withstand your power.
Oh Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who
have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I
place this cause in your hands, (3 times). Say
this prayer for 3 consecutive days and then you
must publish, it will be granted to you.

Lacrosse
Festival invades
Durham Region
4,500 players
expected for provincial,
national championships
By Brad Kelly
Staff Editor
DURHAM — Long ago designated
as one of the capital cities for lacrosse
in this province, visitors from across
Ontario as well as the country are
about to experience how, and why,
Whitby has earned that reputation.
The first whistles blew for the Ontar-
io Lacrosse Festival earlier this morn-
ing, a celebration of minor lacrosse
that will invade arenas over a 10-day
period that is expected to include
nearly 4,500 participants representing
230 teams. The popularity of the event
is substantiated in the fact that more
than 36,000 people are expected to at-
tend games that will be held until the
close on Aug. 13.
“It’s tough,” agreed Ron MacSpady-
en, marketing director for the Ontario
Lacrosse Association and the Festival,
of the logistics of trying to stage an
event of this magnitude. “We believe
we are the largest single season sport-
ing event in Ontario.”
Just to throw out some more num-
bers, MacSpadyen estimates that
more than 200 volunteers are needed
to co-ordinate the event to ensure ev-
erything comes off without a hitch.
The Iroquois Park Sports Centre
is serving as the home base, with
the overflow spilling into McKinney
Arena.
It’s the third consecutive year
Whitby has hosted the festival, and
with each year, the numbers have
grown. This year is no exception.
The Festival features provincial
championships in five age divisions
for kids aged seven to 12. Even the
girls will be getting in on the action,
with the all-girls’ box finals for pee-
wee and midget age divisions, and
the Harrow U15 girls’ Field Lacrosse
Provincials.
As well, the peewee and bantam
National Championships will be held
in conjunction with the festival, with
gold-medal games in each division
planned for Saturday, Aug. 12. It’s no
coincidence that attendance figures
are expected to peak on that day, with
an estimated 7,150 fans anticipated.
“We are trying to get recognized na-
tionally as the premier sporting event
for youth,” notes MacSpadyen. The
Festival has included the Peewee Na-
tionals the past two years, but added
the Bantams for this year. Both age di-
visions are slated to be held in Whitby
again next year.
Both teams are influenced with local
content, as the peewee roster includes
Durham Region residents Gabriel
Burnside and Ryan Keenan of Osha-
wa, Drake Caggiula (Pickering), Dar-
ryl Comes and Jason Weber (Whitby),
Matthew Hossack (Port Perry), Devin
Shore (Ajax) and Brandon Staal
(Courtice). The team is coached by
Oshawa’s Derek Keenan.
The gold medal game for the pee-
wees is Aug. 12 at 3:05 p.m., with the
bantams following at 8:05 p.m.
