The derailment happened about 2 p.m., blocking both east and westbound traffic on the rail line. At the Pickering GO station, travellers awaiting the westbound train to Union Station crowded into the ticket kiosk after the 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. trains were cancelled. In Durham, some trains were getting through, although service was sporadic. Up to 65,000 riders were affect- ed, according to estimates made by GO Friday. But, it had managed to squeeze through a few trains, including the 4:43 p.m. to Pickering. “The trains usually run on a cycle, but because of the acci- dent they aren’t cycling through,” GO supervisor Guy Sullivan said. “But, it hasn’t caused much of a problem.” He said people knew well enough in advance to make al- ternate plans. “Twenty years ago, people wouldn’t have been able to tell the people picking them up,” Mr. Sullivan said. “Now, with cell phones, it’s not really a problem.” Trains west of Mimico were stuck there, but Mr. Sullivan said GO had two or three trains cycling from Union Station to points east. When the eastbound train from Union pulled into Pickering station, travellers weren’t upset by the inconvenience. A train derailment in west Toronto resulted in sporadic late afternoon service to Durham. GO at press time could not guarantee when trains would be arriving. Riders brush off delay “It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be,” said Kerri Lowe of Pickering. “People going east just went down and hoped to catch a train.” Norma Montalbetti of Pickering had gone into Toronto for the day and saw the disruption as “fun” more than anything. “It was crowded but, people were very friend- ly,” Ms. Montalbetti said. Further west of Union, train service had come to a screeching halt. GO Transit riders stranded at Union were being asked to be patient. Information ticker symbols running inside Union let stranded rid- ers know what was going on and commuters were urged to find alternative rides. The accident occurred when six of the CN train’s cars jumped the track and derailed, ac- cording to a spokesperson for CN. No one was hurt and there weren’t any dangerous goods on the train. ✦ Riders from page 1 Bath time for canines at ‘Dog Splash 2006’ fundraiser DURHAM — Summertime is flea time. Pickering resident Tom Atkins was appointed by the board of directors at the annual general meet- ing on June 27. He is a former vice-chairman and has been a board member since 2003. “I’m hon- oured by this ap- pointment. I can think of no bet- ter way to serve the residents of Scarborough, Ajax, Pickering and Whitby than by helping our community hospital system navigate its way to greater leadership in quality, fam- ily-centred care,” he said. “As always, we face many challenges. But I know our board, executive team and staff are ready to succeed in these challenges for our patients.” Those challenges in- clude funding shortfalls and three major capital expansions. “The three very impor- tant things to get done are the mental health housing, the birthing centre at Cen- tenary and the expansion at Ajax,” Mr. Atkins said. “It’s key we get them off the ground.” Mr. Atkins is a manage- ment consultant specializ- ing in strategy and alliance development. His previous roles include vice-presi- dent for Sierra Systems Group Inc., president of TWA Consulting Services Inc., and vice-president of the financial LOB at Unisys Canada Inc. He said he’s cut back on his workload recently and was happy to give that extra time to the hospital when approached by his board colleagues to serve as chairman. While there may be challenges going forward, Mr. Atkins said the board, administration, staff and physicians all care for the hospital. “This board will work hard to develop a better relationship with our phy- sicians and our staff,” he said. Rouge Valley president and CEO Hume Mar tin acknowl- edged outgoing chairman Dave Sinclair. “We thank our outgoing chair Dave Sinclair for completing his two-year term with unwavering commitment, ef- fort and a consid- erable amount of his time,” he said. “We now welcome To m Atkins to this key role and look forward to his leadership on the board. Rouge Valley is fortunate to have a diversity of commu- nity members volunteering their knowledge and expe- rience to the stewardship of our hospital system.” New board members Annie Holmes and Ted Reeves were also wel- comed at the meeting. Ms. Holmes, an Ajax resident, is a chartered ac- countant with more than a decade of experience in finance, operations and procurement. She has served with the board of directors of the United Way of Ajax- Pickering-Uxbridge as treasurer and chairwoman for several years. Most re- cently, she held the po- sition of vice-president of expense management and procurement with Aviva Canada. Scarborough resident Te d Reeves is retired from IBM, where he held vari- ous senior management positions. Departing board mem- bers were John Black and Sherry Senis. Ho spital board now chaired by Pickering resident Tom Atkins Heat wave may be powerful, but power should be plentiful No supply worries as demand rises By Jennifer Stone Staff Writer DURHAM — Power should be plenti- ful this weekend, says a representative of the organization that monitors Ontario’s energy needs and consumption. “We don’t anticipate any problems,” said Lisa Pearson of the Independent Electricity System Operator. Last summer, several power warnings were issued, calling on electricity con- sumers to cut back on use during peri- ods of extreme heat, as the energy sys- tem strained to keep up. But, the IESO’s 18-month outlook “indicates that we are in a better position than last summer,” said Ms. Pearson. New sources of gen- eration online and upgrades to transmis- sion, along with cooler overall weather conditions, have helped, she said. “Issues tend to arise after long periods of heat,” said Ms. Pearson.” Ontario may still have to rely on im- ported power during some periods, she said. Naseer Malik said frequent interfaith sessions, like the one he has planed for Tues- day, would lead to under- standing among faiths. “(With) more frequent meetings ... you will not have misunderstandings,” said Mr. Malik, the national director of the Ahmadiyya Muslim As- sociation of Canada. “People of different faiths could talk about contemporary issues together everyday.” The association has been active in Durham for the past six or seven years but Mr. Malik said with recent publicity around a group of young Canadian men being arrested for alleged plans for terrorist activities, it is reach- ing out to smaller communi- ties in Ontario. The interfaith symposium is on reconciling faith with loyalty to country. “The reason for this topic, whatever is happening with recent arrests of youth, we pick up a topic which is in need at the time in society,” Mr. Malik said. “The reasons for bringing people of differ- ent faiths together is to talk about what different faiths teach the followers about loyalty to the country.” Leaders from the Chris- tian, Islamic and Jewish faiths will explain what each of their holy books tells its followers about loyalty to their countries. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association of Canada, Mr. Malik said, provides vol- unteer services like blood drives, food banks and visits to nursing homes, but they start activities by holding the symposium to bring people together. The general public is invit- ed to attend the symposium on July 18 at the Tosca Ban- quet and Conference Centre at 800 Champlain Ave. in Os- hawa. With approximately 130,000 new green bins appearing at curbs weekly within Ajax, Oshawa, Pickering and Whitby, Regional residents are reminded to make sure that they are purchasing the correct biodegradable bags for their kitchen and food wastes. Although there are many different bags available for purchase that state they are biodegradable, not all bags are acceptable in Durham Region’s Green Bin program. Residents are reminded to look for this logo when making their purchase of biodegradable bags. Residents in Pickering and Ajax are encouraged to use 100% biodegradable kitchen liner bags inside their green kitchen containers for all their food waste or, as an alternative, they may place their food waste directly into their curbside Green Bin with or without a 100% biodegradable liner bag. Durham Region has posted a list of retailers who sell the correct types of biodegradable kitchen liner bags, but remind consumers to look carefully for the correct logo as these retailers may also sell bags that are not acceptable in the Durham’s Green Bin program. The following three brands of bags are acceptable in Durham Region’s Green Bin program: * BioBag Kitchen Food Waste Bags * Biosak Biodegradable Compost Bags for Kitchen Organics * Great Value Compostable Kitchen Garbage Bags To learn more about any of Durham Region’s waste management programs, visit www.region.durham.on.ca/waste we’ll give you a reason to smile... ...at the Deegan Denture Clinics Full & Partial Dentures Same Day Relines & Repair Soft Liners Implant Dentures BPS® Dentures Complimentary Consultations Michael C. The $15.73-million building will be centrally located in south Durham on Garrard Road in Whitby and will be in place within a few years. It’s needed because the move to green bin compost- ing across the entire Region will increase recyclables by 20 per cent. And that’s a good thing because the need for the new sta- tion means we will be putting a lot less material in landfills and we’ll ultimately be doing a lot of good for our environment. The process to approval of the new facility was not without its problems. In fact, after a two-year tender process closed last fall and councillors had a chance to look over the contract proposals put forward by the leading contenders to build the project, there were questions raised about the fairness of the process. Two of the three bidders failed the technical part of the two-envelope process while the third bidder, Metro Municipal Recycling, was recommended by staff. Back in June, Regional council rejected the staff recommen- dation, but after some adjustments were made and finance commissioner Jim Clapp made a presentation, council recon- sidered and backed the Metro bid by a vote of 19-7 with two councillors absent. The material recovery facility, as it’s dubbed, will allow the Region to take in the much larger amount of recyclables we’ll be producing in years to come. They’ll include compost and blue box materials that will grow as more come onside in compost production and as Durham continues to grow -- reaching an expected 1 million citizens by 2031 from the current 600,000. In addition, the material recovery facility will be a solid comple- ment to the possible eventual construction of an energy from waste incinerator which will likely be built in Durham or York Region sometime in the next decade. At least Durham council is taking positive steps, at long last, to come to grips with the environmental disaster awaiting us if we don’t get proactive about the waste we produce. We can breathe a little easier and have a cleaner Region if we all just pitch in. Potty training mom needs garbage bin To the editor: I understand there will be growing pains associated with the new garbage rules and a lot of people, myself included, have to relearn how to do garbage, but I want to put my garbage out at the curb in a plastic garbage bin. It keeps animals from getting into it, and the resulting mess from blowing all over. When I called the Town I was told that bins aren’t allowed: with the new green bins there shouldn’t be anything in the re- sidual garbage to attract animals. This is simply not true. Milk, meat, lunch meat, cheese and other food comes in packaging that is not recylable nor compostable. Animals are attracted by the smell. Are we supposed to be washing all our garbage first? I only had two bags of garbage, but my 3-year-old is still in pullups as we are working on potty training. Keeping them around for two weeks is not pleasant. Try it. I need the garbage can. Durham residents need to quit crying and start composting - it’s the least we can do for the next generation I t’s a good thing Durham recycles tis- sues considering all the crying and bellyaching I’ve heard from some people over the new compost bins. A number of people have fired off let- ters to this paper complaining that the new system is too complicated, or that it’s a waste of time and money. I’ve been using the green bin in Clar- ington for years and it’s about as com- plicated as tying one’s shoes, which leads me to believe there are a lot of people walking around barefoot. The vast majority of residents will embrace this system, new to most of Durham, driven by a concern for their kids and future generations instead of their own selfish motives. For those people, well done. But hopefully those who comply can put a little added pressure on our neighbours who thumb their noses at this process. One of my fellow Clarington resi- dents wrote in to say the green compost program is a waste and added that the compost material literally stinks. He also questioned that if the region really cared about recycling why didn’t it pick up weekly? It’s obvious this person has never used the green bin. (There’s no odour and they do collect weekly). He could go back and read instruc- tions if it weren’t for the fact they are sitting in a green garbage bag in the dump. He even added that many people (himself) he’s talked to said green bins make good beer coolers. Enough said about his priorities. Yo u’d think people were being asked to go to war instead of compost organ- ics. Actually, our soldiers did a whole lot less complaining about putting their lives on the line than some people who moan about putting a little green bin out on the curb once a week. It’s because of these people the re- gion will inevitably have to enforce the use of clear plastic garbage bags to en- sure people are complying. It would be nice to assume everyone would do the right thing, but that would be naive. Hopefully future generations will have a little more consideration for the environment despite their parents and future generations won’t be penalized for our indifference. One of Wasdell’s Faces of the future A new automotive facility is opening in the commercial corridor of big box retailers on Taunton Rd in North Whitby. Mr. Lube, the original quick oil-change specialist, is planting another drive through shop in the high- traffi c spot this fall. Founded in 1976 by a Canadian entrepreneur fed-up with the delays in getting oil and fi lter changes performed on his vehicles, Cliff Giese started with just one store. Thirty years later, he and his partners, are opening their 94-th retail location of the Mr. Lube network that has spread across the country from Victoria to Halifax. Here in Whitby the window of opportunity is now open for investors. The successful quick-lube formula has been copied south of the border and embraced there. Here in the Great White North, the originator remains the industry leader and is now adding several new franchise locations this year. “While we all recognize that the Canadian market is different than the U.S., we also believe that the Canadian Market is poised for change,” said Wayne Vanderhorst, vice-president of real estate and development at Mr. Lube Canada. Peter Fisher, vice-president of franchise development stated “We have undertaken a strategic growth plan to expand our business across Canada, to continue to capture our leading market position.” Canadian consumer behaviour has moved away from DIY (Do It Yourself) and toward Do-It-For-Me (DIFM) driven by busy lifestyles, aging baby- boomers, and more complicated cars with crowded engine compartments. Industry recognized researchers have noted a change in the installed (DIFM) oil change market from 65 percent in 1995 to 80 percent today. The increasing number of vehicles on Canadian roads has been fed by strong sales of new vehicles and sustained by lower vehicle scrap rates. Older vehicles, especially those beyond their warranty period, are typically serviced outside of car dealerships. (Of course, Mr. Lube oil changes, on vehicles new and old, are warranty approved.) Such conditions have combined to make Canada’s oil change market open for business. Across the country franchising has put donut stores on street corners using a national name and successful business formula. This method of licensing is nothing new -- it started in the automotive business with new car dealerships. Today, those dealers are heavily capitalized with expansive lots, glamorous showrooms and specialized staff in several departments. A more manageable franchise operation, like Mr. Lube, offers the chance of being an independent business person -- backed up with corporate assets. Without having to know every technical detail, you just turn the key of a proven business model. “It is the best of both worlds -- the opportunity to be an entrepreneur and at the same time have the resources of a large company,” said Marlene Strynadka, owner of several franchise shops near Toronto. The Canadian Franchise Association cautions that there should be more than a store set-up and licensed name. There should be training and ongoing support, for example. As a long- standing member of the organization and adhering to CFA policies, Mr. Lube has operating committees consisting of corporate and franchisee members meeting regularly to share expertise and knowledge with each other and plan for future growth. New growth has come from new locations, like Whitby’s fi rst Mr. Lube, and from an increasing array of services provided while the customer waits in the car with a complimentary coffee and newspaper. Oil and other fl uid changes at Mr. Lube are warranty approved. They are the auto fl uid experts. Other auto shops require a scheduled appointment or a lengthy wait. At Mr. Lube no appointment is necessary, at any time. Mr. Lube has distinguished itself in the quick-lube business with national TV advertising and promotions. An alliance with Castrol premium motor oil provides a recognizable, top-quality brand name for the customer, resources that store operators can consult, and marketing affi liations. The 100-percent Canadian-owned company is a success story with a three- decade track record. “The bottom line is that the operating system has gone through 30 years of refi nement and enhancement, and it works,” said Strynadka of her business. “It’s proven to be successful for 30 years, and it’s still successful today.” For investors, the dedicated franchise web-site is www.mrlubefranchise. com, and a comprehensive information package is available at no charge. For customers, information can be found at www.mrlube.com. Interested entrepreneurs in Whitby’s latest business opportunity may contact Lori McNicol, manager of franchising and development at lmcnicol@mrlube.com or toll-free at 1-800-667-7809, extension 5280, or 905-828-7042, extension 5280. The 94-th Mr. Lube will open to customers this fall. New Business to Open in Whitby By Pat Donaldson, Special Quick, warranty approved service while you wait is provided by Mr. Lube, and enjoy a free coffee and newspaper during your visit. Mr. Lube retail stores feature a bright, modern design with the convenience of multiple drive- through service bays. The original quick lube specialist remains the leader in Canada. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, July 16, 2006 PAGE 7 A/Pdurhamregion.com A/P PAGE 8 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, JULY 16, 2006 durhamregion.com Facilities open up wide to public to avoid misconceptions Story and photos by Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — “Always tell the truth and nothing but the truth and don’t try to hide anything” — that was the message delivered by Gunilla Carlsson to Durham and York regions delegates. Ms. Carlsson is the public relations man- ager of the Sysav energy-from-waste facil- ity in Malmo, Sweden. She stressed to the delegates, who visited the facility May 19, that transparency is paramount in running a sometimes-controver- sial incinerator. The crux of public acceptance of incinera- tion lies in community involvement and education — a sentiment echoed by the people who run similar ener- gy-from-waste facilities in the Netherlands, elected officials, civil servants and industry salespeople, all of whom met with the del- egation during its week-long educational trip to Europe. “The buildings were impressive and that was part of their approach,” said Cliff Curtis, Durham Region’s com- missioner of works. “They wanted to be showpieces. They wanted to be available to the public for tours.” The four energy-from-waste facilities vis- ited were immaculately kept on the interior, the offices akin to Ikea showrooms, and their exteriors architecturally modern. “It was set up so they were a pleasure to be in,” Mr. Curtis said. “They did not look like traditional waste-treatment facilities.” The trip, made by political representatives from Durham and York as well as Durham public works staff, was motivated not only by the technology. The delegation also delved into learning how the facilities were integrat- ed into the community and how the process was presented to the public. “We use a lot of energy to inform about what we do and also how this system works,” Jonas Eek said. Mr. Eek, manager of the Sysav facility’s energy department, explained each year the facility awards a scholarship to a young per- son who is studying waste management. Area school children and college students make regular field trips to the facility, which helps in educating the public about the tech- nology behind incineration. “In Sweden, 60 per cent of the population knows that the waste is burned, but only 10 per cent know that it is incinerated. How we burn the waste and incinerate they don’t know.” Ms. Carlsson said. “If you have seen the facility you are often very positive of how we are doing it.” On the grounds of the Malmo landfill some swallows decided to make a home in an embankment. Instead of kicking the birds out, the people at Sysav built an interpretive centre in the middle of the landfill for bird watchers. There are geese and ducks and swallows, but rarely are seagulls seen. Similarly, in Amsterdam, Dr. Evelien Jonk- hot said public perception is key. “Communicate open and clear from the start,” Dr. Jonkhot said. “Take sufficient time to establish community relations.” The facility makes strides towards educa- tion through its in-school program devel- oped with the Natural Environmental Edu- cation Centre in Amsterdam and facilitated by Marit Jek- kers. They have a box of instruc- tional material, on how to reduce and reuse, for grade- school children. “They make a music show using all waste material and it teaches they how to look at waste differ- ent,” Ms. Jekkers said. “To teach children is very important because they can go to their parents and tell them you have to take care of the environment.” In an effort to include the entire communi- ty, the Alkmaar facility holds an open house every year, when the public is invited to learn about energy-from-waste technology. In addition, all the area schools make regular field trips to the plant. In fact, it has an educational room with interactive learn- ing tools and a classroom. They have a staff of 11 tour guides and welcome 13,000 visitors an- nually. “We keep getting more and more visitors every year,” explained Caroline deLeon, a facility tour guide. They hold contests among the children who visit to make art out of garbage and the mayor is among the panel of judges. “What I found particularly impressive was that they were actually involving the children in projects like artwork, creating things from recycled material, and the facilities were well-integrated into the community.” Mr. Curtis said. Durham has made strides towards public involvement. The public was invited to infor- mation meetings on May 9 to 11. Following the meetings, anyone who wished was in- vited to make a delegation to the Joint Waste Management Committee on May 17. Beyond public involvement, prior to the decision being made, Mr. Curtis said should Durham or York build a waste-to-energy facility, efforts will be made to emulate the educational strides taken in Europe. “I think we have to reach out to the com- munity with whatever we do, particularly the young people. We would like to run school tours so we can get them involved with what is going on,” Mr. Curtis said. “Because we think we have a plan that is worthwhile and should be endorsed.” Next: The need for direction For more on this story To view this series in its entirety, visit keywordsearch: aburningissue Top of page: At the Alkmaar Energy-from-Waste facility, the public, including students, can visit to gain a better understanding of what happens there. But, how to get there remains open to debate. As the Region of Durham’s manager of policy, plan- ning and special studies, Mr. Saunders manages the Region’s Official Plan (ROP) and the Provincial Places to Grow Act in Durham. Durham wants the region to be a balanced, sustain- able, self-sufficient commu- nity, according to Mr. Saun- ders. “We need certain things to be able to achieve that,” he said. “Being on the east- ern edge of the GTA, we are always playing catch-up.” He said the Province needs to provide more help to make the live/work rela- tionship here better. “The provincial plan is too provincial and Durham is not given its due consid- eration,” Mr. Saunders said “I would say that the ROP is more focused on making Durham the best place it can be.” When comparing the two strategies for the future of Durham, Mr. Saunders said the discrepancy often comes down to the population-to- employment ratio. “We would like to have enough jobs for 50 percent of the people,” he said. According to Mr. Saun- ders, the provincial plan does not include a job- to-population target but a forecast of one job for every three residents. “A jobs-to-population target of one to two is de- sirable,” Mr. Saunders said. “We are proposing to main- tain that vision.” The jobs-to-population target, he said, filters down to affect traffic and roads and creates an unbalanced assessment loading if you have only houses. Durham has three years to bring its ROP into confor- mity with the growth plan. “It’s the law,” he said. “We have to comply; that is the long and the short of it.” As a department, he said planning is moving on a go- forward basis to make sure what it brings forward for committee approval in Au- gust complies. However, the population, employment and urban land portion will be held back for further work. According to regional chairman Roger Anderson, an important step in the completion of the ROP is a proposed meeting with Min- ister of Public Infrastructure Renewal David Caplan. Mr. Anderson said he is opti- mistic the meeting will take place before the end of July. “The problem is the min- ister said no urban bound- ary expansions for anyone,” Mr. Anderson said. “Whitby only has three to four years of development plans left, then they are out of space.” Mr. Anderson added that Brock, Scugog, Uxbridge and Pickering all suffer under the provincial plan. “You always need to grow,” Mr. Anderson said. “Otherwise you have to de- crease services or increase tax.” As staff continues to work through the ROP they will continue to advocate their position on employment. But, that ratio is not the key to making Durham the best it can be, says Ajax Mayor Steve Parish. “Just putting it into writ- ing in my view is a planning economic exercise,” he said. “Preserving employment lands is what is important.” The Province’s plan is much stronger, Mayor Par- ish said, in accomplishing this. He said the Region needs to be more aggressive in marketing Durham as place for industry and jobs to lo- cate. “You attract jobs by hav- ing a quality of life that is second to none,” Mayor Parish said. “You make it a community people want to be in.” Limiting sprawl and in- tensifying development, which the provincial plan encourages, accomplishes this, he said. “The Green Belt and the Places to Grow set out clearly what path planning should take for the next few years,” Mayor Parish said. “I just think it is an extreme waste of time and staff to rail against that.” He said the basic direc- tion of the provincial plan is the right one, as it aims to curb sprawl and preserve agricultural and environ- mental lands. By concentrating on major arterial corridors, growth is promoted there, which in- creases the effectiveness of transit. “The way we have been growing over the past de- cade is not sustainable,” he said. “It is not protective of green spaces and agricul- tural lands.” These areas provide food, clean air and water, Mayor Parish said, without which we would be lost. “It is a health issue and a quality of life issue,” he said. On Sept. 13 Regional council will consider the Official Plan, provided the planning committee first approves it. durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 10 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, July 16, 2006 &ALL Durham’s leading wedding professionals are at the... ...Ajax & Pickering News Advertisers...Ajax & Pickering News Advertisers...Ajax & Pickering News Advertisers showsdurhamregion.comshowsdurhamregion.com Sunday, September 17, 2006Sunday, September 17, 2006 Deer Creek Golf & Banquet Facility - AjaxDeer Creek Golf & Banquet Facility - Ajax For vendor informationFor vendor information please call: 905.683.5110 ext. 230please call: 905.683.5110 ext. 230 or email: lmccaig@durhamregion.comor email: lmccaig@durhamregion.com for more detailsfor more details about the show.about the show. O nly Louise and her sister, Jesse, survived and they grew up in Thorn- bury, near Collingwood. Elizabeth Rorke’s mother, Eliza- beth Valentine, came to Canada from Ireland and settled in Pickering in 1832. Here she met and married James Richardson. By the time she was 40 she was established as a professional writer. “Today her name is essentially un- known,” reads the foreword by Kyle Jolliffe in Ms. Richardson Rorke’s book ‘Gold and Frankincense and Myrrh.’ “However, in her own lifetime she was well-known as a teacher, for her widely-read books for children, and for her contribution to Quaker life and literature in Canada.” Ms. Richardson Rorke purchased a quarter of an acre of land in Pickering for $250 and built a summer cottage, ‘Innisfree’. She shared the cottage with her sister Jessie. In 1933, they moved permanently to the cottage, where they both took an active part in local activities such as the Women’s Institute and the Women’s Club. Ms. Richardson Rorke lived in Pickering until she died on July 23, 1949 at her beloved Innisfree. Several of Ms. Rorke’s books for children can be found in the Local History Room at the Pickering Pub- lic Library. Durham Regional Police reported Tuesday that 39-year-old Ian Robert McKinnon, who was ordered held at Whitby after being found not crimi- nally responsible for a crime, left the hospital Saturday and had failed to return. He was reported missing to police Saturday evening. Mr. McKinnon is a white man who stands 5-feet-6 and weighs 220 pounds. He has a moustache, long brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing blue jeans, a blue sleeveless shirt and grey fleece jacket. He is described as a loner who speaks in a monotone. Residents are urged not to ap- proach the man but to call police at 905-579-1520, ext. 1833. Linda Watson steps down as executive director By Jillian Follert Staff Writer DURHAM — After 16 years at the helm of Grand- view Children’s centre, Linda Watson is bidding farewell to the colourful murals and smiling faces, passing the torch into new -- but equally enthusiastic hands. “It’s so difficult to leave, but I’m looking forward to retirement,” she said last Friday, taking a break from cleaning out her office. “I had a 16-year-old girl come up to me and say, ‘You can’t leave, you’ve been here my whole life,’ and I realized that I had.” It was 1990 when Ms. Wat- son came on board as execu- tive director of the centre, which offers programs and services for children and youth with special needs. As Durham Region has grown over the years, Grandview has too. Looking back, Ms. Watson said the centre’s case load hovered around 1,200 kids when she started -- now it’s over 4,500. The number of staff has tripled and funding has grown dra- matically, al- lowing for all kinds of new services. Today, Grandview is Durham’s lead agency for preschool speech and language ser- vices and of- fers top-notch physiothera- py, audiology, occupational therapy and medical as- sessment. Recreation programs range from parent and tot swimming, to dance, Jiu Jitsu and music. On Ms. Watson’s watch, the centre also established new satellite locations, added the trademark car- toon murals throughout the building, introduced volun- teer services and incorporat- ed the Grandview Children’s Foundation and its board of directors. With this long list of suc- cesses behind her, Ms. Wat- son announced plans to re- tire last winter. “Life is short, you should eat dessert first,” she said smiling. “I wanted to start a new chapter and devote time to my other interests.” A search was launched for a replace- ment to fill her consid- erable shoes and kilome- tres away in Windsor, Tar as Ro- hatyn an- swered the call. As a fa- ther of two children -- one of whom has special needs -- Mr. Rohatyn has close ties to disability issues. His other area of expertise is finance and banking. “There aren’t many jobs that combine both of those areas,” he said. “That’s why I was so thrilled with this opportu- nity. Grandview is a fabulous organization, I’m really look- ing forward to going back to disability issues, which is my passion.” Mr. Rohatyn most recently worked as a regional director with the Workplace Safety Insurance Board and execu- tive director of the Associa- tion for Persons with Physi- cal Disabilities in Windsor. He said he has no plans for major changes at Grandview and hopes to continue fight- ing for more funding and ex- panding services to meet an ever growing population. “This is a great fit,” Ms. Watson said. “I feel very comfortable leaving it in his hands.” Brock North Dental OPEN EVENINGS & SATURDAY CONTACT US AT 905-427-7773 •DIGITAL X-RAY • INTRA ORAL CAMERA • TV IN OPERATORIES • KIDS PLAY STATION 2 • DIRECT BILLING TO INSURANCE ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS AND EMERGENCIES 2200 Brock Road in the Brock North Plaz a Angela, Michelle, Darlene, Dr. Pacione, Donna, Michele, Robbin, Angie, Lisa, Jill, Vanda, Dr. Fernandes Dr. Rony Dagher (Endodontist) Ashley, Kristine, Karen, Anna, Marie, Brenda Orthodontist and Denture therapist onsite, Dr. Peter Sbaraglia (Anesthesiologist) SERVING DURHAM REGION SINCE 1970 AIR CONDITIONER 2 TON $1,595 Installed GET FURTHER SAVINGS ON AIR CONDITIONERS & FURNACE COMBO’S INQUIRE:Convert Your Home From Electric to Natural Gas Call for “FREE” Estimate & Duct Work Design SALE! The case was in Oshawa court Tuesday morning, though Mayor John Mutton was not in attendance, opting instead to be represented in the very brief appearance by an agent. Mayor Mutton was charged with two counts of assault in June. Durham Regional Police have refused to provide any information on the matter, citing concern for identifying alleged victims. Summer Danakas’ project on Canadian chil- dren in the homestead is taking the Trafalgar Castle School student to the national competition of Historica, a charitable history fair dedicated to helping youths discover the stories that make their country unique. “What it comes down to really is what’s at the heart of Canadian culture,” said Caroline McBrine, a teacher at Valley View Public School in Ajax and head of the Ontario delegation. “Some students do a really good job at capturing that.” Ms. McBrine’s Ontario team heads to this year’s Historica event in Halifax July 10 for one week. The adventure is all-expenses paid and will introduce participants to students from across the country and to some of Canada’s national historical spots, such as Pier 21. “A very generous undertaking that Historica has taken on,” said Ms. McBrine. In late May, four students from across the region participated in the fair’s provincial level with about 100 Ontario students, and brought with them proj- ects on the Underground Railroad, Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons, Sir John A. Macdonald and Kingsmill’s: A Family Run Store Since 1865. “It’s a very exciting time,” said Ms. McBrine. Representing Durham were Chelsea Danakas, a Grade 6 student at Trafalgar in Whitby; Alisha Keene, Grade 7, Lakewoods Public School in Os- hawa; Zachery Paterson, Grade 5, Quaker Vil- lage Public School in Uxbridge; and Laurie Taylor, Grade 8, Valley View. Their trip included visiting historic sites, such as Fort George, Lundy’s Lane Museum, Laura Secord House and Niagara-On- The-Lake. “They’re learning more about they’re history; they’re learning Canadian history can be very ex- citing,” said Carol White, an Ontario co-ordinator of the fair. She added it’s also a cultural experience because they get to meet people from across Ontario. “The national fairs are especially inspiring,” said Ms. McBrine, who will be attending for a third time. She said participants come from all over, includ- ing remote areas in Nunavut. “It can be very emotional; they bring all the stu- dents in, flying their provincial flag,” said Ms. Mc- Brine. “You walk around with your mouth open... you just can’t believe what they’ve done. Historica operates on school, regional, provin- cial and national levels and is not intended to be competitive. In Durham, the regional competition saw Summer chosen for the nationals, and the other students for the provincials. Ms. McBrine said the national participant was picked before the provincial competition because they didn’t want those attending to feel like they were competing for the spot. The Historica fairs program is a national edu- cational initiative of The Historica Foundation of Canada. The Sox competed against teams a full age group older (bantam), but still managed to play with a lot of pride throughout the tournament. In the end, however, they could not beat the Millenium Outaouais in the tourney finals. The game was close until the top of the fourth, when the host Outaouais from Gatineau took the lead with a monster home run. The Sox answered back in the bottom of the inning with two runs. The Millenium scored two more in the sixth and four in the bottom of the seventh to take the game 7-2, thus giving the Red Sox the silver medal. The Red Sox started the tourna- ment with a come-from-behind 12-11 win over the Riverrains Lanaudiere from the Montreal area. In Game 2 of the round robin, the Sox played the Pirates Lac St.-Louis, also from the Montreal area, but came up short 8-7. The 1-1 record put the Pickering team in the elimination game versus the Co- bras Beauport from Quebec City. The Red Sox bats lit up the Quebec City squad for a 16-6 victory. Af ter a four-hour rain delay, the Red Sox took the field against the Pirates Lac St.-Louis. The Sox came out on top of a close game with a 7-6 victory to advance to the final. Charles in charge at big meet Pickering athlete bronzed in Dominican Republic, captures national triple jump gold for University of Miami By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — It’s shap- ing up to be a busy summer for Pickering track and field athlete Ta bia Charles. The 21-year-old triple jump and long jump specialist recently returned from a triumphant and fun trip to the Dominican Repub- lic where she represented Canada at the NACAC (North American, Central American and Caribbe- an) Track and Field Champion- ships. There, she earned a bronze medal in the triple jump with a leap of 13.63 metres and came fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.34 metres. She was more than satisfied with her per- formances at the NACAC meet, although she was well off her per- sonal bests in both events, having posted a 13.94 in the triple and 6.58 in the long. “Yeah, I could have been so much better,” she says wistfully during a phone interview earlier this week, shortly after arriving back in Canada. “It was good I went to the meet and came top five against all those people. It was a good experience. I had the time of my life.” Next up for Charles’s burgeon- ing track and field career is the Canadian National Senior Track and Field Championships in Ot- tawa in August. There, she has hopes to set the standards in her two specialties, earning medals in the process. “I haven’t been to many big Canadian meets. I haven’t been back in a while,” says Charles, who completed a four-year bachelor’s degree in psychology in only three years while on an athletic scholarship at the Uni- versity of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. “My goal is to go there and do something really big.” In addition to competing at the Canadian senior nationals, she’s also contemplating heading to Europe in September where she may take part in several high- profile professional meets. “I wouldn’t mind going there. I would love to. But, I don’t know for sure yet,” she says. In the interim, she plans to continue her training in Toronto under coach Gregory Portnoy at Power Athletics, based at York University. Charles is coming off what can only be described as an excep- tional outdoor track and field season in what was her final sea- son with the University of Miami Hurricanes women’s team. She left the university as arguably the greatest jumper in school history, having earned 10-time All-Amer- ican status during her three years at the NCAA Division 1 univer- sity. She’s also owns three school records. In addition to being seven-time Atlantic Coast Conference cham- pion, she capped her sterling col- legiate career by winning gold at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacra- mento, CA. in June. Having quali- fied for nationals in both her spe- cialities, she brought home gold in the triple jump after clearing 44-feet, 11.5 inches (13.74 me- tres), which was close to her per- sonal-best mark. She also placed eighth in the long jump. Charles recalls a complete wave of satisfaction came over her after realizing that she had ended her collegiate career as a national champion. “I usually don’t show my emo- tions, but I remember thinking, ‘I’m done, I’ve finished school and I finished up with a title’. It was really amazing.” She notes next year will be a pivotal one for her in the run- up to the 2008 Olympic Sum- mer Games in Beijing, China. She plans to compete for Canada in those Olympics. Next year, she’s hoping to compete at the world championships as well as the Pan Am Games. “Definitely. My goal is to go the Olympics and get a medal.” Charles also has ambitions out- side of the track and field realm. She eventually wants to return to university to study law as well as to become active in the fashion industry. A highly regarded and successful clinic for the treatment of neuromuscular complaints, ZyGenix Health Group is continuing to help people in pain all around the Greater Toronto Area. Across Canada these integrative treatment facilities are attaining results from their multidisciplinary approach where others have failed. The success rate is unbelievably high in these clinics, and many individuals have even avoided invasive surgeries and many are living a better quality of life. The degree of muscular relaxation, increased joint mobility, and overall pain relief is outstanding. Case studies and treatments were initially performed in India (New Delhi), Edmonton, Alberta, and then the Greater Toronto region with remarkable results. In the GTA, clinics are now located in Mississauga, North York, and Scarborough, with a brand new location being set up in Oakville because demand is has been so high. All you need to do is call and ask if your condition can be treated. The concept of “Zy”, or Intracare (intermeshing) of health services is the main premise of Zygenix Health Groups. This approach is centered around the fact that our body relies on multiple systems to work properly to avoid and recover from illness. The goal is to pinpoint the source of the patient’s condition through Zygenix’ thorough testing, and to determine the optimal treatment protocol for the patient so that the person can recover quickly and naturally through the treatments. For both minor conditions, and more severe conditions, the goal is also to correct the problem, rather than temporarily relieving the pain. Zygenix Health Groups employs a “team of doctors” approach. This allows different treatments to complement each other for maximal result. The clinics have a number of beneficial effects that no other clinics provide. They use a unique combination of manual treatments resulting in relaxed muscles, improved nerve function, increased mobility, and reduced pain. ZyGenix Health Group practitioners treat chronic conditions of the nerve, muscle, bone, joint, and tissues. These treatments, combined with strengthening and conditioning, cervical traction systems, precision-point therapy, and technologically advanced laser therapy and other high-tech modalities, gives the patient maximum pain relief and provides the patient with a long term answer for their chronic pain conditions. CHRONIC PAIN: How do we treat it? Patients suffering from chronic pain conditions often have seen many doctors, practitioners, and have undergone many different therapies. They suffer from physical pain, and they also have a chemical and psychological component to their pain, which are often neglected or overlooked by other facilities. ZyGenix treatment centers deal with the physical aspects of the nerve, muscle, bone, joint, and tissue as well as the nutritional and psychological components to chronic pain conditions. PHYSICAL: Nerve, Muscle, Bone, Joint, and Tissue conditions. CHEMICAL: The chemistry of the body changes with inflammation and pain. Chronic conditions are often associated with metabolic changes such as obesity and malnutrition. PSYCHOLOGICAL: Chronic pain alters your cognition (thinking) leading to irritability and moodiness, depression, anxiety, stress and other psychological conditions which can have an impact on your family and social spheres. This will further aggravate your condition of pain. Each treatment plan is individualized and builds on the last and after a series of treatment, a long lasting relief of symptoms is noted as treatment is centered on correcting the root cause of the problem. Th e nutritional and psychological components allow for a more complete care. Patients find that following a treatment they have less stress, feel more relaxed and have a sense of well-being due to the fact there is a release of natural opiates called endorphins, which are elevated significantly during a treatment. Zy Genix Health Group is one of the first treatment systems to provide fully integrative care in Western Canada; integrating common used Eastern and We stern treatments systems. Specific conditions are treated from an Eastern and Western perspective with specific groups of muscles in combination with a nutritional assessment that correlates all aspects of health. These treatments give the patient maximum pain relief and provide the patient with a long term solution for their pain, because of the individualized treatment system provided by Zygenix’ based on their clinical findings. When you should call us? Pain relief and restoration of functioning are attained for such conditions as: neck pain, upper and low back pain, headaches (migraines), carpal tunnel syndrome, frozen shoulder, thoracic outlet syndrome, (numbness and tingling of the arm and hand), tendonitis (tennis and golfers elbow), plantar fascitis (pain at the bottom of the foot), sports injuries, whiplash, TMJ, asthma, sciatica (pain and tingling to the buttock and leg), arthritis, torticollis (wry neck), sprain and strain injuries as well as the soft tissue component of almost any condition involving the nerve, bone, joint, muscle, or tissue. Many patients deemed as potential surgical candidates have avoided or prolonged the need for surgery with the “Zy” approach. The reality is that most people wait too long and the problems keep getting worse leading to increased suffering. ZyGenix doctors are available at various clinics around the greater Toronto area to help you with your concern. An appointment can be made by calling 905-803-0222. All you need to do is call and ask if your condition is treatable. ZyGenix treatments may be fully or partially covered by health plans through work and insurance. The staff of highly trained will take the time to listen to concerns, answer questions, and to help people understand that they don’t have to live with pain. WHY LIVE IN PAIN? Ask for Inside Sales Durham Windows and Doors Brings Mobile Showroom To Your Door Wa yne Hutchison brings to the replacement window and door busi- ness a new and long overdue feature. It’s a Mobile Showroom which just may be the only one in Canada. “The day is gone when you car- ried some brochures and a sample window to a customer’s home,” ex- plains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired North York Mobile Library truck and installed interior walls along with all of my window samples.” When you call Durham Win- dows and Doors for a free estimate, Wa yne will show up at your door with his Mobile Showroom which you’ll enter by way of a sliding patio door. Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Vinyl Window Designs series of vinyl windows which you’re free to operate and you’ll discover the many special features including how they can be cleaned without going outside. “After being in this business for 26 years, I can honestly say these are the fi nest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All Vinyl Window Designs win- dows come with Low E Glass which fi lters out the ultraviolet rays keeping your home cooler in the summer and eliminate fading of your curtains, drapes and furniture. All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hard- ware and glass. Wa yne would also like his custom- ers to know that he does all of the estimates personally, eliminating the cost of a salesperson. Durham Windows and Doors also does all of its own installations, which ensures that every customer gets a high quality job done at the best possible price. Durham Windows and Doors is located at 696 King St. W. in Osha- wa. For more information call (905) 579-2222 or 1-888-576-8575.
