The blaze brought an early end to the school year, which was scheduled to run until yesterday. It also forced the move of a school graduation dance to Pine Ridge Secondary School. OPG has submitted a letter to its federal regulator, the Cana- dian Nuclear Safety Commis- sion, asking if the company has to conduct an environmental as- sessment as part of the refurbish- ment process. Refurbishment will extend the reactors’ lifecycle by 25 years. “We’re waiting for word from the CNSC if we need to do an EA,” said Pat McNeil, a senior vice-president with OPG, during a Community Advisory Council meeting on Tuesday evening. “The past practice is to do an EA.” OPG will prepare a business case outlining the feasibility of and how the refurbishment will be done, he noted. The business case, which will take about 18 months, will look at “what’s the work, what’s the cost, who and how will the work get done, how will we finance it, and how we’ll pay the financing back,” Mr. McNeil said, adding it will be completed in early 2008. Vanderheyden’s Garage Vanderheyden’s Garage 33 Years in Business 761 Simcoe St. S., Oshawa 905-725-2519 Lubrico Warranty Repair Centre More happy clients that agree with CTV News when they found that Vanderheyden’s Garage was the most honest and reliable mechanic during a “hidden camera” episode of W5. Come in and experience the pleasure for yourself. At Vanderheyden’s It’s A Team Effort The team at Vanderheyden’s includes Peter Gerlich, Sean Asselin, owner Bill Vanderheyden and Dave Provencal. It’s called Vanderheyden’s Garage but it’s owner, Bill Vanderheyden, will be the first to tell you that the success of the business is because of everyone who works there. “We’re a team and work together to give our customers the first rate service they have come to expect,” he says. “They’re a good bunch of guys who truly enjoy what they do.” Va nderheyden’s is known for its expertise on foreign cars and has all of the specialized equipment and tools to get the job done right. The team at Va nderheyden’s has many years of experience working on imports, and include, along with Bill, Dave Provencal, Sean Asselin, and Peter Gerlich. Dave has been getting grease under his nails since he was 14-years-old. Riding dirt bikes and snowmobiles, they often needed repairs done in a hurry. “After fixing them myself for a couple of years I decided that being a technician was a career I would enjoy,” says Dave. “So I enrolled in the mechanics program at Durham College.” He spent the first four years of his apprenticeship wo rking at a VW dealership before moving to Va nderheyden’s. “I really enjoy detecting and solving driveability problems,” he says. “Especially when it comes to a vehicle’s electronic system.” Fo r the past five years Dave has worked on a wide variety of import vehicles and domestics too. “I enjoy the variety of work here at Vanderheyden’s,” he says. “You never know what’s going to drive or sometimes get towed into the shop.” Sean Asselin also turned a hobby into a career. “I did a lot of motocross racing when I was a teenager,” he says. “You had to fix the bike yourself so I got pretty good at it.” Sean’s first job was at a repair shop in The Beaches in To ronto where he specialized in VWs and Audis. Then he moved to a couple of other shops wo rking on domestics giving him a well rounded knowledge of all vehicles, A couple of years ago after stints in the IRL racing circuit and the trucking business, Sean came back to his fist vocation and a couple of years ago started working at Va nderheyden’s. It’s a great place to work and Bill is very fair always letting us do our jobs,” he says. “There’s lots of variety here from major engine repairs to changing oil and everything in between.” Peter Gerlich has been in the business a long time. It all started thousands of miles away in Poland where he became a licensed mechanic at 17 and a Master Mechanic at 22. He then moved to West Germany where he worked mainly on VWs, Mercedes and Fiats. When he was 32 he moved to Canada and after taking a variety of courses and tests became a licensed mechanic in this country. For the past 24 years Peter has worked at Vanderheyden’s. “It’s a challenge every day. There are always different problems and I really enjoy the challenge of finding the solutions,” he says. “My many years of experience means I can troubleshoot a problem faster saving the customers money.” Bill Vanderheyden also started his career in Europe first working at 16 years old at a Peugeot dealership in Holland. After his mandatory tour in the army where he worked on military vehicles, he came to Canada and got a job first at a Nissan then a Chev/Olds dealer. In 1974 he opened his own shop on Bloor St. E. in Oshawa where he built up a loyal clientele. In 1982 he bought a bigger shop and transformed the Simcoe St. S. fire station into the Vanderheyden’s Garage you see today. “My job today is much the same as it was when I started in the business as an in and out inspector, taking the vehicle for a test drive to see what’s wrong and pass on the information to the technicians,” says Bill. “We all work as a team and that’s what our customers like. They also appreciate that we’re not satisfied until they are. That’s what keeps them coming back.” SAME DAY SERVICE “I’ve trusted Bill for over 5 years with my vehicle, and he’s done exceptional work. I appreciate both the friendliness and skill of his mechanics.” Patrick Long Minister Volkswagen owner “I’ve known Bill for over 20 years and he’s worked on every car that I’ve owned since then. I wouldn’t take them anywhere else. Outstanding work, fa ir prices, honesty!” Terry and Melanie McKay BMW owners “I’ve been dealing with Vanderheyden’s for about 10 years, and continue to receive quality service, workmanship, reasonable pricing, accommodating attitude, etcetera... but what really sets them apart in my mind is honesty!” Winston Stairs - Bell Canada Honda and Saturn owner “Bill Vanderheyden has been servicing my vehicles for over 15 years. Residents asked to conserve water during hot days DURHAM — The Region is reminding people to go easy on the water this summer. By practising water con- servation during the hot weather when demand is up 50 to 80 per cent, residents can help reduce the need for a water ban, according to the Region of Durham. As part of water conserva- tion practices, residents are asked to comply with ‘odd- even day lawn watering’. The system sees lawn watering, car washing, pool mainte- nance and other related ac- tivities on an even calendar day for those with an even house number and on an odd day for those with an odd house number. For lawn watering, it’s sug- gested residents use a sprin- kler that sprays large droplets low to the ground and that they water in the early morn- ing before the heat of the day kicks in. The Region offers free rain gauges to residents to measure the amount of water their lawn receives. Two companies that operat- ed a Whitby food store, along with officers and directors, have been convicted of failing to remit $23,420 in Provincial Sales Tax collected from customers over a 20-month period. Deville Produce Limited, on Brock Street North, and Deville Gourmet Limited were fined a total of $5,840. Amedeo Guzzo- Foliaro, of Ashburn, and Michael Guzzo-Foliaro, of Pickering, were fined $5,840 each. According to the Ministry of Finance, justice of the peace Ann Forfar was told the PST was col- lected, but not remitted between Ja nuary 2003 and August 2004, after a ministry investigation confirmed the shortfall. Justice Forfar granted the men and the company six months to pay the fines. Surcharges of $4,380 must be paid to the Ontario Victim’s Jus- tice Fund. Businesses convicted of fail- ing to remit PST must repay the full amount of taxes owing and the civil penalties and interest as well. School liaison officer accused of striking student AJAX — A high school liaison officer with Durham Regional Po- lice has been charged with assault after allegedly becoming involved in a physical altercation with an Ajax student. Police said the officer and a school administrator were in an office at Notre Dame Catholic Sec- ondary School speaking to the 16- year-old Grade 11 student April 26 when the incident is alleged to have taken place. Investigators were told the 48-year-old officer struck the student. The boy was not seriously hurt and did not require medical atten- tion, police said. A lengthy inves- tigation by Durham’s professional standards unit resulted in a charge being laid. Constable Joe Mitschang, a 27-year veteran of the force, is charged with assault. Pickering, Ashburn men fined for provincial tax offences Durham officer charged with assaulting Ajax high school student EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR L et’s celebrate Ah, yes, it’s finally here -- the chance to get that long-awaited one-per cent cut in the GST. Oh, and tomorrow also happens to be Canada Day, as well, our 139th birthday as a nation. It’s always instructive to take stock of the state of our country as we head out to Canada Day events, fly the red-and-white, and finish off the day with fireworks and bright night skies. What exactly is it that makes Canada special, that sets us apart from hundreds of other countries around the globe? For starters, we have peace in our streets and through our countryside that many nations across the globe can only dream of. Whether it be the misery of Darfur in Sudan or suicide bomb attacks in Israel or Iraq or Afghanistan, we can be thankful we don’t have to deal with such tragedies here. And we can be grateful that we have brave men and women in uniform who are willing to give their lives to try to bring peace to trouble spots around the globe. We have civil rights and liberties here in Canada that are only a mirage in many parts of the world. We are able to dissent from the government line without fear of imprisonment, torture or death. We have the opportunity to travel the world and return to the safety of our own borders. We also are seen across the planet as a nation of tolerance, a place where immigrants don’t have to change in order to be ac- cepted as Canadians. What does it mean to be Canadian? There may be no better answer than right now as the FIFA World Cup takes place. Every quadrennial you can see proud Canadians driving around with the flag of their country of origin flying out their window. It’s important to remember that these fans have chosen Canada, have made their lives here and look for a brighter future here. Yes, they are proud of their heritage but they are equally proud and thrilled to be in a country that allows them to be exactly who they want to be. That’s a legacy we can all share and take pride in. And that’s why Canada Day is so special for each and every one of us. We’re all on Canada’s team To the editor: World Cup fever has gripped the four corners of the globe, and nowhere is it as evident as right here in the Greater To- ronto Area. It is quite common to see cars proudly flying the national colours of countries such as Italy, Germany, Brazil, England, and Trinidad and Tobago. It truly is a fun, vivid and colourful reflection of our multiculturalism. I think it’s wonderful to show support for one’s country of origin or ethnic background, especially during international events like the World Cup. However, I would be even more thrilled to see just as many people flying our own Canadian flag with as much passion. It seems that we as Canadians don’t need to shout out our patriotism, nor get in people’s faces about how great our country truly is. It’s definitely not the Canadian way. Instead, we tend to go about our affairs with a quiet confidence and humble pride knowing that Canada is the very best country in the world. For this reason, Canada Day is so important. While we should feel patriotic every single day of the year, July 1 provides us with the opportunity to step out of our con- servative constraints, celebrate with abandon and unabash- edly proclaim our love for Canada and all it represents. On Canada Day, I would like to see every one of these for- eign flags replaced with the glorious Maple Leaf. Let’s vener- ate Canada and pay tribute to the freedom and tolerance that our country is renowned for, but which we sometimes take for granted. Finally, let us demonstrate unequivocally which nation on Earth truly merits our unyielding love, pride and patriotism. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, JUNE 30, 2006 durhamregion.com We live in a land of peace and opportunity E very Canada Day, I think of my fa- ther, who always admired Americans not only for their pride in their coun- try, but also for their demonstration of it. North of the 49th parallel that separates our nations, we in Canada are typically more restrained, less likely to wave our flag and wax poetic on our country’s virtues. But we have so much to celebrate. Our country is big and beautiful -- we can stretch out our arms and not worry about bumping into another nation and its people. We have three oceans, mountains big and small, prairie, vast tracts of forest and an abundance of lakes and rivers, all with plentiful wildlife. Our country, and Ontario and the Greater To ronto Area in particular, truly is the world. We began with French and English fighting it out for the nation, and for many years our European ancestors and their de- scendants were the only people seen here. Today, people from Africa, Asia, South and Central Americas call Canada home. They often leave poor nations, countries oppressed by violence, for the hope of a better, more peaceful and prosperous life in Canada -- and they find it here. They enrich our country and make it stronger. If you have ever been to a citizenship ceremony, where new Canadians officially become citizens, it is a truly emotional scene. To see people young and old from all corners of the globe, not pleased, not happy, but thrilled to become Canadians is a wonder- ful thing. We would do well to share their enthusiasm. Our country is respected around the world, known as a peace-loving nation that doesn’t turn its back on the world, but at- tempts to spread that peace and order to the world’s hot spots. In any house, in any part of Canada, a person can walk out the door without fear. We can attend church, synagogue, mosque and temple openly and without government reprisal. Now, there is a kind of nationalism that, in the early part of the last century, led to wars. It was a perverted form of pride in country that looked upon other nations and peoples as inferior and was hungry for con- flict. This isn’t our nationalism. So, even though we may not yell and fist-pump our patriotism as our American friends are wont to do, let us celebrate our country in our own way, more muted, per- haps, but no less proud. Happy birthday Canada! Mike Ruta’s column appears every third Friday. E-mail mruta@durhamregion. com. We have so much to celebrate and be proud of on Canada Day Mike Ruta staff editor But trustees not pleased chairman kept quiet on issue By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer DURHAM — The Durham District School Board will re- main a member of the On- tario Public School Boards’ Association -- for now. Although the board de- feated an attempt to remove its membership from OPSBA immediately, an Oshawa trustee said if the chairman had spoken up earlier, she would have changed her mind and some others may have as well. During a discussion about removing its OPSBA mem- bership, some trustees spoke as if chairman Michael Bar- rett, a board OPSBA repre- sentative, agreed with Trust- ee Marilyn Crawford that Durham should stick with the group. “There may be assump- tions on where I stood on the issue, but I would have voted to support this motion and withdraw from OPSBA,” said Trustee Barrett. “OPSBA talks about lead- ership, but demonstrates none. It’s not just the Dur- ham board that is dissatisfied with OPSBA.” Trustee Shetler said she would have liked to have heard his comments earlier. “If you would have spoken to it, three or four other trust- ees would have supported it and that motion could have gone through,” said the Os- hawa trustee. Trustee Barrett said his role as chairman is more of a gatekeeper and not to sway votes. Whitby Trustee John Dolstra made the motion to eliminate the board’s mem- bership from OPSBA during the June 19 board meeting. “I’m very disappointed in OPSBA and I believe our $100,000 in membership can be better spent in pencils and books or block budgets or something like that,” he said. He added lots of money has been saved by the board that has nothing to do with OPSBA and he has a real problem with the way board members have been treated. A Durham representative on OPSBA, Trustee Crawford disagreed with Trustee Dols- tra’s motion. “I have been the one abused the most around that table... but I also think there is still a lot of values that they do,” she said. Pickering Trustee Sherry Croteau suggested Trustee Dolstra pull his motion and Trustee Shetler agreed, sug- gesting they can always pull their membership later. The Suburban Newspapers of Ameri- ca, which has more than 2,000 members across the continent, has announced that the MDRMG earned nine awards during its annual Advertising and Promotions Contest Awards. News Advertiser earns advertising awards Duncan Fletcher Ajax school recognizes its birthday with cupcakes and a baseball game By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer AJAX — To a cheering crowd, stu- dents at Lincoln Avenue Public School took on their teachers in a golden anni- versary game of baseball. Staff and students at Lincoln Avenue celebrated the school’s 50th anniversary with a baseball game and birthday cup- cakes on Friday, June 23. For the event, the entire staff and student body came out to watch the ball game and show team spirit. “We wanted something to get them into the spirit,” said Sharon Khajuria, the school’s retiring principal. She said Lincoln Avenue wanted to gear students up and help them realize what an anniversary and celebration is about. “Our school mascot is a lion and we’ve been spending a whole lot of time teach- ing together is better,” she said, adding taking pride and celebrating the school’s history is part of school citizenship. Karyn Marra, a Grade 6 teacher, de- scribed the team spirit during the ball game as sounding “like a lion’s roar. “I think it’s a pret- ty good representa- tion of what Lincoln is about.” She added it’s not often every staff member and every student participates in a school event. Paulette Samu- els-Brown’s Grade 5 class did its part. We aring red-rimmed glasses, Ms. Samu- els-Brown walked toward the plate to bat and raised her arms to her cheering fans. After hitting the ball just far enough to secure first base, she looked back at her supporting students and gave them the thumbs up, only to be greeted with more cheers. “That was my first time holding a bat,” Ms. Samuels-Brown said, laughing after she was tagged out at third base. “I love it, I’m enjoying it, the weather is great,” she added. “I’m surprised the kids are really having fun. I guess the kids get to see that teachers are people and can have fun... and school is not just about academics, it’s about camaraderie and having fun.” Grade 5 student Krishma Mistry watched the teacher-versus-student ball game. “It’s fun because it looks like the game on TV kind of,” said Krishma. Even though the students lost 10-7, Ryan Metcalfe still enjoyed taking on the challenge. “All the kids got to come outside,” said Ryan, captain of the school’s intermedi- ate baseball team. “Everyone was still cheering even though we were losing.” Lincoln Avenue has a ball celebrating 50 years Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo Students from Lincoln Avenue Public School cheer on principal Sharon Khajuria as she steps up to the plate during a softball game between staff and students. Earlier this month, the Province agreed with the power authority’s recommenda- tion and instructed OPG to start the EA process. Mr. McNeil in February said the nuclear division of OPG cre- ated a special division to look at a “plant life extension project.” He also has been appointed head of the division. On Ju ne 15, OPG sent a letter to the CNSC notifying the regu- lator of the company’s intent to refurbish Pickering ‘B’. If the regulator approves of OPG’s plan, the refurbishment work won’t start until 2013, added Mr. McNeil. The EA is part of the business case, he noted. Mr. McNeil said the EA for the ‘B’ side will be similar to the one conducted for the four Pickering ‘A’-side reactors. The decision not to restart Units 2 and 3 on the ‘A’ side was an economic decision and not an environmental one, he added. “The decision not to go was a commercial reason. We did re- turn 4 and 1, and we forewent 2 and 3,” he said. “The EA now is to plan the work and make sure the business case is sound.” The CNSC would set out the rules for doing the EA, he stated. “They give us a set of ground rules on how to conduct the EA and who will conduct the EA,” he said. He noted the EA for the restart of Pickering ‘A’ was done by OPG for the CNSC. “They’re still in charge,” said Mr. McNeil. “It’s very much their EA, but we do the work.” ✦ If from page 1 NEWS ADVERTISER There’s lots more news online at durhamregion.com New, expanded transit routes DURHAM — Designed, expanded and revised routes announced re- cently are the first step in a five-year, Durham Region Transit route expan- sion plan. Minacs Worldwide Inc., a Dur- ham-born company that provides Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), announced on Friday that it has entered into an agreement with TransWorks Information Ser- vices that, if approved by share- holders, will mean a partnership with one of India’s leading BPO providers. TransWorks, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aditya Birla Group, is offering to purchase all outstand- ing common shares of Minacs for $5.50 per share. If the deal is suc- cessful, Minacs and TransWorks will create a business with rev- enues in excess of $330 million. In announcing the offer, board chair Norman Betts said he was proud of this agreement and the future it secures. “I am very pleased that as a re- sult of disciplined efforts and hard work by the board, its special com- mittee, our management team and our advisers that we have been able to find a great new partner for Minacs, for our customers and for our shareholders,” he said. The offer, although six cents per share lower than Friday’s closing price, represents a premium of ap- proximately 44.7 per cent based on the closing market price of Minacs common shares on the Toronto Stock Exchange on February 3, 2006 -- the last completed trading day prior to the announcement by founder Elaine Minacs that she wished to sell the company. Ms. Minacs died in May after a long battle with cancer. She com- menced the process to possibly sell the company earlier this year, despite opposition by the board of directors. A special committee was created to look into what would be best for shareholders. A previous offer by Dubai-based Multi Inter- national Invest in early February was later withdrawn. Andrea Minacs, a new member of the board and daughter of the late Elaine, expressed her support for the offer. “I believe that this agreement provides a good opportunity for the company my mother built to reach new heights, becoming an even stronger competitor,” she said in a press release. “I know that she would have liked to have had an opportunity to thank all of the employees for their support and loyalty in these past few months. I deeply regret that after the painful experiences my mother endured in the final months of her life, she will not be able to see this new chapter unfold.” The company currently employs 5,000 world-wide, including 1,700 people in its two Durham loca- tions. Minacs board of directors is urging shareholders to accept the deal, which expires 35 days after it was made. putting our energy to good use www.opg.com Tuesday, July 4:STORIES GALORE Join storyteller/singer/songwriter Heather Whaley of Durham West Arts Centre for stories, music, and rhythm. Friday, June 30th - Monday, July 3rd † † Saturday, July 1st - Where open My role as Chief Energy Conservation Officer is to ensure that conservation and energy efficiency play a vital role in Ontario’s ongoing energy strategy. “The Conservation Zone” is designed to help you find ways to use energy more wisely, and become part of Ontario’s growing conservation culture. We can no longer take electricity for granted. And with hot summer days already here, every saved kilowatt counts as our power generators produce the extra electricity we need to keep Ontario cool. When you take off for cottage country this summer, don’t leave energy conservation behind! Many of the energy-saving ideas that have worked around your home will work just as well at the cottage. Cottage Tips for Using Energy Wisely • Keeping screens clean and in good repair will allow you to open windows wide to catch those cooling cross-breezes. • Ceiling fans are also an energy-efficient way to be comfortable on hot days. • If your cottage has a clothes dryer, save it for colder days and use an outdoor line to get that “fresh air” feel in your clothing. • Use compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) instead of incandescent lights. • Purchase “ENERGY STAR®” rated equip- ment and appliances. • Use solar panels for hot water or electricity, if possible. • While barbecuing is generally the cooking method of choice at the cottage, the less you use your oven, the more energy you’ll save. Use a microwave oven whenever possible. • Older fridge models can be real kilowatt guzzlers. A new fridge can run on as little as half the electricity of a ten year old unit. But new or old, when it’s not in use, unplug it! • On a rainy day, spend some time caulking and weather-stripping your cottage. It will help to keep cool air in...and insects out. Peter Love Chief Energy Conservation Officer of Ontario THE CONSERVATION ZONE EVERY KILOWATTS COUNTS – EVEN AT THE COTTAGE! You can start saving energy at home while you are away with a programmable thermostat that sets back your air conditioning when you leave for the cottage and bumps in back up when you’re on the way home. Ta ke advantage of the Conservation Bureau’s Cool Savings Rebate program that offers up to a $75 rebate on a contractor-installed programmable thermostat. For more information on this and other rebate programs, call 1-866-670-COOL (2665), or visit www.conservationbureau.on.ca CORRECTION NOTICE To our valued customers: We apologize for any inconvenience caused by an error in our flyer dated: June 23-28. Par tSource is at 1095 Kingston Rd. Billboard JUNE 30, 2006 Students should learn the responsibility of helping parents with payments C ontributing to post-second- ary education is an issue dis- cussed in almost every house- hold. It is the source of arguments, bonding, tears and joy. But whose responsibility is it to pay for univer- sity or college? It’s true that university tuition is climbing, and therefore this issue has become a major conflict in most families. Summer employment op- portunities are quickly arising, but it seems teenagers aren’t clamber- ing to find them, even though they should be. Nobody wants to deal with the financial strain of post-secondary education, but should parents take full responsibility of the cost? Luckily, many students as young as 15 years old are encouraged to seek employment. Although many employers normally do not hire stu- dents until they are 16 or 17, students continue trying to earn whatever they can by cutting grass or babysitting. Many of the students’ intentions are good. They help pay for their entertain- ment and personal events. However, many do not start to think about the financial strain of post-second- ary education until Grade 12, too late to even start thinking about raising $5,000 or more. Indeed, there are a few teenagers who tend to rely on mom and dad to squeak by, bor- rowing whatever they can, whenever they can. Sadly, this can be very de- bilitating to a person’s development. What is a teenager learning by merely asking and receiving? Surely the real world won’t treat them so well. The question of what age is too young to start working poses another debate. If it were up to me, students would start working at 15 and thus be held responsible for many of their personal finances, such as their en- tertainment. Every child should understand where money comes from and the hard work it takes to earn it. I started working at 15. Of course I wasn’t thinking about university tuitions or car payments, but I had a responsi- bility to pay for things such as going to the movies or out for dinner with friends. I learned at a young age that budgeting and learning how to earn and spend money properly is very important. The earlier you teach your child to budget and maintain finan- cial stability the better off they will be later in life. Sadly, the precious life lesson of maintaining financial stability is not instilled in teens’ mentality. Many students have complained to me that there is nothing being taught in school about how to budget. We learn how to add and subtract, but nothing further. Why aren’t these life lessons being taught to our kids in the place where they spend most of their time? Independence comes from con- tributing to your own post-secondary education. Most teenagers love to feel mature. Paying for school is a surefire way to accomplish that. I mean it’s our education, right? Why not help allevi- ate the cost? In the end, university tuition and residence expenses should be split right down the middle. If students get to decide where they want to go to school, they should depend on themselves to financially sustain themselves. So parents, do yourself and your teenager a favour. Offer them some independence while teaching them a valuable life lesson. Encourage them to find a job and contribute to their future. They will thank you for it in the end. Shows run Thursday nights, featuring variety of acts By Mike Ruta News Editor PICKERING — A blanket or lawn chair is all you need to enjoy great music all summer long in Pickering. The 2006 Waterfront Concert Se- ries kicks off July 6 with the Peter Smith Jazz Quartet. Presented by the City of Pickering and Ontario Power Generation, the series features con- certs on nine consecutive Thursday nights at Millennium Park at the foot of Liverpool Road. All shows start at 7 p.m. and are free. “It’s a really great, really exciting opportunity for our residents to take in a wonderful view and see very ex- citing performers,” says Joanne Finn, the City’s event co-ordinator. The area is becoming more of a hot spot, a great place to make a night of it, she notes. “There’s all different types of busi- nesses that are developing on Liver- pool Road South; there’s cafes and outdoor patios and a lot of cute little shops,” says Ms. Finn. “It’s almost like a Beaches feel.” She says in the summer there are a lot of people walking in Millenni- um Square Park who hear the music playing and come over for a listen. The shows last until 8:30 or 9 p.m., often with a break between sets. About 150 people attend each con- cert, and while there is some seating, she recommends that listeners bring a lawn chair. “People can just sit outside and relax and unwind,” says Ms. Finn. This is the fourth year for the series, which began in Esplanade Park but moved to the lakefront in the second year. She says the outdoor concerts are a favourite with residents, who often call the City to inquire about them. The 2006 lineup kicks off with the laid back, Latin-jazz and traditional South American melodies courtesy of the Smith quartet. The Pickering Community Concert Band next takes the stage, a band that has a big fol- lowing in the area. On July 20, the “very, very popular” Brian Rose Little Big Band performs, and on Aug. 17 it’s the Full Count Blues Band’s turn. “They’re really great,” says Ms. Finn. “If you’re looking for a good time -- definitely.” The series wraps up Aug. 31 with Muhtadi World Drums. “It’s actually a group of people who do different drumming styles and they get the audience involved,” she says. On a hot summer evening, Ms. Finn says it’s a lot cooler by the lake, a great place to escape the sweltering temperatures. For more information on the se- ries, visit www.cityofpickering.com. Sports briefs JUNE 30, 2006 King, Vella to play for Ontario under-15s at Rocky Mountain Cup By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — Two Pickering teens can’t wait to take their con- siderable skills to the next level at a national-level tournament in Ed- monton next week. Jessica Vella and Arin King, both 15, teammates on the Pickering Fal- cons girls’ under-16 Ontario Youth Soccer League squad, will be part of Ontario’s under-15 team at the Rocky Mountain Cup tournament in Edmonton July 4 to 9. The tournament is classified as a national scouting showcase tourna- ment, where players are identified as being prospects for the National Training Centre (NTC). Players at the NTC have the opportunity to practise and play against the best players in the country. The Pickering girls, who attend St. Mary Catholic Secondary School, leave today (Friday) for Quebec for a three-day training camp, re- turning on July 2. Two days later, they’ll wing their way to Edmon- ton to compete in the tournament that includes provincial teams from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, B.C. and Alberta. Ontario kicks off Cup play against Manitoba on July 6. For Vella, it’s her second year on the 22-member provincial team, having been the goalkeeper with the gold-medal-winning Ontario under-14 club at the Cup last year. While Quebec is a traditional rival for the Ontario squad, La Belle Province won’t be sending a team in the age group this year. “Quebec has been our rival every time we play them, and B.C. There is no Quebec this year, but B.C. is there,” says Vella, who fully expects to win her second Rocky Mountain Cup in a row with the Ontarians. King, who plays centre back for the Ontario, is making her first ap- pearance on the Ontario squad. She notes she was nervous in the early tryouts under the direction of head coach Bryan Rosenfeld, but adds that didn’t last long. “Maybe the first time I went out, I was nervous but, after that, I wasn’t,” says King. Both agree being part of a pro- vincial team takes dedication and perseverance, as the coaching staff demands that the players perform at a high level in practices, but also to undergo a rigorous off-field fit- ness regimen. “We both have a fitness program and we e-mail our fitness results (to Ontario coaches) monthly,” ex- plains Vella. Pickering Soccer Club head coach Tony La Ferrara notes the girls’ commitment to the provin- cial program, putting in four days a week of training throughout the fall and winter, paid off in making the final cut of the Ontario team. “They put in so much work, so much effort and so much passion and dedication. It’s great for them to be rewarded like that,” he says. Tryouts and training for the On- tario-15s began last September with and continued through the winter months at the Ontario training site in Vaughan. Training carried on indoors and outdoors in Vaughan -- even with snow on the outdoor turf. “For two practices, we shovelled snow,” deadpanned Vella. The Pickering girls are two of five Durham Region players on the On- tario under-15s. They’re joined by Bryana McCarthy of Ajax, Kristen Pargetter of Whitby and Natasha Kroon of Bowmanville. King and Vella hope to play for Canada internationally in the fu- ture. In the near future, however, both have their sights set on earn- ing a soccer scholarship to a U.S. university. Arin King, left, and Jessica Vella hope their cup will runneth over at a showcase soccer tournament in Edmonton next week. • BUZZTRAVEL phone card. • Worldwide access. • Billed by the minute. • No connections fees. • No PIN Required. • Valid until March 30th, 2007 Purchase an “Articles for Sale” or “Cars for Sale” ad for $139+gst and receive: * Must be prepaid. TWO BUDGIES SEEK A LOVING HOME They come with their own cage home, stand and weekly feeder and water containers. Their Love Story of Rio and Princess: Rio is a male British budgie. He was found in downtown Toronto during the month of January 2004. He was sitting in the middle of the path with his head bent into his feathers, freezing to death. Apparently he had flown out of a window, by accident. Search for his parents failed so he came to Pickering, to his current home. Princess is a female American Budgie, who fell in love with Rio. Rio is bigger in size. To day, they live in a home where they are al- lowed to fly around and then come back as they desire. Neither can stay away from each other, so they stay in their home most of the time. They do have their moments of arguments, when Prin- cess shows her independent American side and throws Rio out of their home. But then they call and sing to each other and come back to live in their home. Now this couple is looking for a new family, where their morning and evening conversations and songs will be loved by all. Requirements: There is no financial cost but promise of a loving home for them. The only maintenance needed is to refill their water and food containers on a week- ly basis and to clean their home/cage twice a month. If you would like to provide Rio and Princess their new home, kindly write a short essay about why your home is best for Rio and Princess. Write to: Rio and Princess, Box 271, Station Main, Picker- ing, Ontario, L1V2R4 Please include return contact information. The winning essay will be forwarded to local newspa- per for publication considerations. Rio and Prin- cess will be coming to the address of the winning essay. 1996 CHRYSLER INTREPID, 4dr, V6, 3.3L, auto, mint, fully loaded, bucket seats, console, Alpine CD-stereo, great gas mileage, looks/runs like new $3,100 e-tested, certified. In addition to hosting games throughout the July long weekend, a number of Ajax and Pickering rep teams are also competing at the 40th anniversary edition of the Robbie this weekend. Seven Ajax and eight Pickering teams take to various fields in Scarborough, Markham, Pickering and Ajax for the char- ity tournament that raises funds for cystic fibrosis and muscular dystro- phy research. Ajax hosts the girls’ under-14 age group at the Ajax Community Cen- tre, starting with round-robin play beginning on Saturday, July 1 at 9:30 a.m. and continuing through to the quarter-final and semifinal matches on Sunday, July 2. The Ajax Soccer Club’s Ajax Eastside Warriors com- pete in the division. Meanwhile, the girls’ under-16 and under-18 brackets are hosted by the Pickering Soccer Club. The under-16s are at Diana, Princess of Wales Park, while the under-18s are at Dunmoore and Diana, Princess of Wales parks. Action in both divi- sions gets under way on Saturday, July 1 at 9:30 a.m. Quarter-final and semifinal games are Sunday. The Pickering Power is slated to compete in the under-16 division. Other local teams taking part are: Ajax Eagles (boys’ under-11); Ajax Gunners, Pickering (boys’ under- 13); Ajax United Lightning, Ajax Strikers, Ajax Lightning Bolts (girls’ under-11); Pickering Predators (boys’ under-10); Pickering United (boys’ under-14); Ajax Admirals, Pickering Power Strikers, Pickering Thunder (boys’ under-15); Picker- ing Green (girls’ under-10); Picker- ing Power Pythons (girls’ under-12) and Pickering Power (girls’ under- 16). The event continues to live up to its name as an international tourna- ment as teams from the U.S., includ- ing ones from Buffalo and Roches- ter, New York and Knoxville, Tenn., as well as Trinidad and Tobago, are travelling to compete. All told, more than 240 boys’ and girls’ teams in 16 age groups are playing. Championship finals are on Monday, July 3 in Scarborough and North York. Beans now join strawberries on the shelves for being ripe and ready for purchase from Durham Region producers. Just like asparagus and strawberries, consumers can make the easy choice to buy fresh by buying local and visit a local Durham Region producer to purchase their produce. Steve Cooper of Cooper’s Goat and Veggy Farm started producing beans four years ago. He recalls how each year sales have been getting better at his farm gate stand and that consumers couldn’t be happier. “I love hearing people say things like ‘Th ey just taste better straight from the farm”, says Cooper. Beans at local farm gates usually come pre-picked, which saves time for the consumers, while still allowing them to enjoy the benefi ts of fresh, farm produce. Most farm gates will also have a variety of crops for purchase, which makes the country stop even more appealing, says Cooper. W ithin the northern portions of the Region Cooper’s Goat and Veggy Farm, Zephyr is joined by W illowtree Farm, Port Perry, Applewood Lane Fa rms, Sunderland and Whittamore’s Farm Market, Markham who all produce and market their beans locally. Consumers can also visit the Uxbridge Farmer’s Market at the Uxbridge Arena on Sunday’s from 9:00AM-1:00PM to fi nd local, fresh products. Th e south-central portions of the Region also boast many bean growers. Lilac-Boychyn Farm, Whitby, Watson Farms, Bowmanville, Linton’s Farm, Oshawa, Pistritto’s Farms and Greenhouses, Pickering and Prices Country Market and Greenhouse, Bowmanville. Farmer’s markets also take place in Brooklin on Saturdays, Newcastle Arena on Sundays, Oshawa on Fr idays and Tuesdays and in Whitby on Wednesdays. All of the above are members of the Durham Farm Fresh Marketing Association that represents producers who grow and market fresh, local products and encourages consumers to buy fresh, buy local and enjoy the best.
