The Pickering Ward 2 Regional Councillor invited representa- tives from Nestor Traffic Systems to set up a photo radar system in front of the elementary school at Glenanna and Dixie roads. Coun. McLean has been advocating for years for the Province to allow municipalities to enforce their own photo radar systems. He en- countered the American compa- ny at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference earlier this month in Montreal and in- vited representatives to Pickering to give a demonstration. “Our council has been quite active in encouraging the Prov- ince to man and operate our own photo radar. We think it’s an im- portant initiative we want to un- dertake to keep our roads safer and reduce accidents,” he said. Coun. McLean said speed- ing and road safety is always a top concern for residents and he knows police are very busy. “This particular tool would cer- tainly give us as a municipality tools to keep our roads safer,” he said, adding Pickering bylaw staff would do the enforcement. Scott Van Driel, principal of Va ughan Willard, said the police do come out a few times a year to patrol the area, but he welcomes any other solution to curb speed- ing. “(Speed) is always a concern to administration and parents, of course. Body discovered in Pickering Adult found in truck; death being treated as suspicious PICKERING — Durham Re- gional Police were behind the Pickering Wal-Mart all day Fri- day as they investigated a suspi- cious death. Homicide and identification officers were on scene and nearly a dozen police vehicles, includ- ing two forensic investigation unit vans, blocked both ends of the alley behind the store. “We’re currently investigating a suspicious death,” said Inspec- tor Charlie Green. “That’s all I can tell you.” He would not say if the victim is a man or a woman, only that he or she was an adult, nor would he say if police knew the identity of the victim. “We have some ideas but that all has to be checked and con- firmed,” said Insp. Green. The body was found in a white tractor trailer, which police con- firmed was stolen. The trailer had a decal that reads A.K. Brothers Transport. An assistant manager at the store, who would not give his name, said the vehicle had been there for a while. “To be honest, it has nothing to do with us just because it is behind our store,” he said. Another Wal-Mart employee, who also wished to remain name- less, said employees had noticed the tractor trailer parked behind the store on Thursday evening. He went on to say that when staff arrived the following morn- ing and the vehicle was still there they telephoned police. The investigation continues. 123LIMO.CA SUVʼS - Limos - Limo Buses. The cam- eras are able to capture a high volume of traffic travelling in both directions and in multiple lanes. Inside the van, a moni- tor shows the picture of the passing vehicle, at what speed it is travelling and the posted speed limit. One car clocked in at 57 km/h in the 40-km/h zone. Brian Boyes, vice-president of sales for Canada, said the system is not used in any Ca- nadian towns or cities, but is used in some American mu- nicipalities, which have seen a decrease in speeders. The cost of the system would vary depending on the con- tract the City entered into. Mr. Boyes said they could set a flat monthly fee for the use of the equipment, as well as the hir- ing of a technician, or the com- pany could get a share of the fines collected. Coun. McLean said the City isn’t looking for a cash cow, but rather a way to keep Pick- ering’s streets safer. “We’ve got to try something; obviously the current system isn’t slowing people down,” said Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson, who was also out to see the demonstration. He said the City would tar- get local roads as the police already do a lot of enforce- ment on regional roads such as Brock and Kingston roads. Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner said the big question that remains is wheth- er the Province will amend leg- islation to allow municipalities to use photo radar as a means of speed enforcement. ✦ Pickering from page 1 Pickering considers cameras in ongoing fight to reduce speeds Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo Alvaro Etcheverry, a senior technician with Nestor Traffic Systems, explains the high-tech computer system connected to red-light cameras on display this week in Pickering. But Region ‘a long ways away’ from construction By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — Durham has put its stamp of approval on plans to use thermal treatment to rid the region of waste. Durham council endorsed a recommen- dation from the regional works committee that identified thermal treatment with energy recovery and recovery of materials from ash as the best way for the regions of Durham and York to manage the waste remaining after re- cycling. “This means we are going to continue down a process to find a way of disposing of our waste and York’s waste in a joint effort that will result in a new technology and hopefully energy from waste,” Chairman Roger Ander- son said. “It will be a better way of doing busi- ness when it comes to landfill in Durham and York.” Mr. Anderson thinks it is a good move on the parts of Durham, York and the Province for allowing the process to proceed. “We look forward to the conclusion and the location and site and design of a facility that will be new, modern, efficient, energy efficient and environmentally friendly as opposed to landfill,” he said. The thermal treatment of waste, also known as incineration, was recommended as a pre- ferred technology by the regions’ consultant on waste management, MacViro Consultants. MacViro identified this technology after evalu- ating the effects of different systems on the natural, social, economic, technical and legal environments. Council approval of the recommendation is just one step in what works committee chair- man Marcel Brunelle said will be a lengthy process. “We are a long ways away, we have a lot of things to do, we have a lot of road to cover,” said the Whitby mayor. “And at the end of the day, when it comes down to a site, of course that will be a complicated process.” The recommendation, however, did meet opposition from one councillor. Oshawa’s Brian Nicholson introduced a mo- tion that would require municipalities pass a resolution accepting the facility in their com- munity before that municipality could be con- sidered as a host. The motion was lost, with only Coun. Nich- olson, Brock Mayor Keith Shier and Councillor John Neal from Oshawa voting in favour. Durham will now take steps to find a loca- tion for the energy-from-waste facility, which isn’t expected to be released until next spring. For the second year in a row, the City was presented with the Burlington Cup by the Lifesaving Society, Ontario branch. Doug Ferguson, executive director, came to Pickering council June 19 to present the honour. “For the second year in a row, this City trained more people than any other municipality of your size in On- tario,” he said. More than 8,000 adults and youths participated in swim programs at the Dunbarton and Pickering Recreation Complex pools. He commended City staff on its hard work considering “the limited amount of water space, in which we pour all these people. Critics of the impending legislation have speculated young teens won’t seek medical help or guidance if they have been ‘illegally’ engaging in sex. But there will be no need for youths to avoid showing up at clinics if they need profes- sional advice. They will not be turned away, ostracized, or find themselves in trouble with the law. “The age of consent (for sex) doesn’t have anything to do with the age of consent to (receive) services,” notes Glendene Collins of the Durham Region Health Department. “We can- not deny services.” According to Ms. Collins, the Children’s Aid Society is only contacted if someone is a victim of sex assault or if the under- age person has been having sex with an adult. The new legislation, intended to offer youths protection against adult sexual predators and pimps, will reportedly make allowances for young teens having sex with others their own age, so as not to criminalize romance. But it will give law enforcement more recourse when young people are taken advantage of by much older adults. And in this age of the Internet, where the danger of luring by sexual predators is very real, more protection for young teenagers is welcome. The world is a different place than it was in 1890, the last year the age of consent was raised. In that generation, people were often married by the time their sixteenth or seventeenth birthdays rolled around. Many parents today would prefer that their children not engage in sex during the tender teen- age years. There are many risks both to physical health and emotional well-being. But sexual education issues, as always, are a matter for discussion between parent and child. What this proposed law really does is hold adults accountable if they sexually exploit anyone under 16. And it’s difficult to make a convincing argument against that. More questions need answering To the editor: Re: ‘Bus driver fired after leaving students alone in parking lot’, June 9. It was certainly disturbing to hear that three special needs kids were left on a parked bus. I’m very happy to hear that all were found to be in good shape. It was also disturbing to hear that the office worker (and fill-in driver) was fired because of this. As usual, “you know what” flows downhill. More questions need to be answered. Who assigned this person as a driver for this run? Was he/she informed or trained about these special needs people? If the answer is “no” then I would ask Mr. Ing a few more questions. Measuring stick helps students improve T he Fraser Institute’s 2006 elemen- tary report cards came with great news for some Durham schools and a reputation stain for others. An independent public policy organi- zation, the Fraser Institute ranks schools using data from the Ontario Education Quality and Accountability Office’s (EQAO) testing of Grade 3 and Grade 6 in reading, writing and math, the achieve- ment difference between boys and girls in Grade 6 reading and math, and the percentage of EQAO assessments that didn’t meet the provincial standard. As expected, schools that do great on provincial tests praise it, while those that don’t fare so well slam it and say it is not truly reflective of the school’s suc- cesses. At Waverly Public School, EQAO scores have increased the amount of parents trying to get their students into the school from out of area. This year, the Fraser Institute gave it a number- one ranking and scored it a perfect 10, almost double the 5.1 score it received the year before. But not all schools have been so lucky and for places like Ritson Public School, the report is upsetting. Ritson in Oshawa scored 0 and ranked 2803 out of 2818 schools, a score its prin- cipal, Randy Huebert, said does nothing to reflect the greatness occurring there. He said ranking systems using only a test score are a disservice. He may be right when it comes to the Fraser report, which is more or less just ranking schools based on their EQAO scores. If the Fraser Institute wants to call its ranking system a report card, it should look at more than just EQAO results and take into consideration the social achievements and development issues of a school. As for the EQAO testing, which re- ceives similar complaints, it is important and should continue. There is no deny- ing the difference provincial test scores can have on school improvement. A quick look at this year’s Grade 10 literacy test scores is proof enough that when there is a public measuring stick, schools across the board can excel. This year, 87 per cent of Durham Catholic and public school board students passed the test with averages that have been in- creasing every year. The test measures if students possess the expected reading and writing skills for their level. As Chris Hurst, superintendent at the Durham Catholic District School Board said, there is a need for some sort of comparative system so schools can see which ones have effective strategies and how other schools can learn from them. While most people realize that stress is a part of their lives, few take time to think about the consequences. Stress, which has physical, emotional and mental ramifi cations, has been linked with medical or emotional problems such as hypertension, heart disease, PMS, headache, IBS, cancer, diabetes, panic, anxiety, depression, to name a few. No one sets out to make their life stressful, so chances are you aren’t aware of how you put yourself under stress. No situation creates stress by itself; it is how you think about the situation that makes it stressful. The good news is that you can do something about it by learning to respond to stress differently! Join us at our Free Introductory Seminar on Monday, June 26 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at 1780 Altona Road in Pickering. Some individuals are better able to detoxify than others, and we should never compare one person to another as each one of us is bio-chemically unique. Detoxifi cation happens in stages and sometimes diffi culty can be experienced in the fi rst or second stage. Professional products exist that facilitate the different stages of detoxifi cation. These products and the practice of good lifestyle habits are essential requirements to combat disease, and return a person to a better state of health. The body has to be prepared to cleanse properly and this preparation is necessary to avoid stressing the system and experiencing unpleasant side effects. Also, detoxifi cation is nutrient dependent, so an assessment for nutritional defi ciencies is a great place to begin. This can be achieved through a Hair Mineral Analysis laboratory report. When the liver is overburdened and doesn’t do this well the fi ltration system is not effi cient. * The liver manufactures bile (about one quart per day). This bile is stored in the gall bladder for secretion. In cases where the gall bladder has been removed, so has the storage facility for the bile, and an additional job is placed on the liver. People concerned with losing weight should be extra cautious as they need to breakdown fat which is where a lot of the toxins are stored, and this adds an additional burden to the detoxifi cation process. Therefore, people that need to lose a lot of fat should be guided professionally to ensure their health doesn’t deteriorate. For more information about the detoxifi cation method that is right for you and steps you can take to be on your way to a healthier you, call Karen Steward, a Health Professional in the Durham Region at 905-837-6627. Call Susan to advertise 905-683-5110 ext. 231 Correction Notice Due to an error, the Ontario Ford Dealers Association “Ford Family Pricing” ad that appeared in the Oshawa Whitby Durham Wheels on June 21st indicated that you can get “0% GST Now” when you purchase or lease a Ford vehicle. The advertisement should have stated: “Get 6% GST Now” when you purchase or lease a Ford vehicle. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, June 25, 2006 PAGE 9 A/Pdurhamregion.com DURHAM — A statutory public meet- ing about the Region’s Official Plan (ROP) is being held Tuesday, June 27. The ROP, a significant planning ac- tivity currently under way, establishes a growth management structure that balances growth with the protection of the environment and other essential resources. Durham’s first plan was approved in 1978 and established a structure for the Region, recognizing existing urban areas as the primary locations for fu- ture growth, designating a major open space system, and defining a rural area to protect productive agricultural land. The second plan was approved in 1993. The meeting is at Durham headquar- ters, during the planning committee meeting, at 9:30 a.m. The public is invited to comment at that time. The fire was contained quickly thanks to the swift action of several roofers across the street, who were alerted by a neighbour. The three men put out the bulk of the blaze with a garden hose and a fire extinguisher. According to Pickering Fire Services, the blaze caused around $50,000 in damage and nobody was home at the time. It started when material in an outside container used for cigarette butts and ashes ignited material in a blue box. Summer provides unlimited options for you to participate in physical activity. From gardening to mountain bike riding, moving your body is the key to improved physical health and mental well-being. Here are some tips to get the best of an active summer: Hydrate - Water is the best source. En- sure you consume water prior to, during and following activities. Adjust your consump- tion relative to the intensity of the exercise and temperature. Sunscreen - Prior to journeying out- doors, ensure sunscreen is applied to all ex- posed skin. A hat and sunglasses will com- plete your sun protection. Time your activity - Use early morning or later evening for more intense activities. Th e sun’s rays are less intense during these times and will provide a safer envi- ronment for you. Intensity - Reduce your activity inten- sity during hot and humid days. Th e air quality and temperature will create a greater demand on your body and will reduce your body’s ability to perform activity. Family - Choose an activity the entire family can enjoy. Pick-up a Durham Trails Guide at your local library branch to help guide your hiking or cycling experience. Explore your community while having quality family time and keeping your body moving. Location - On exceptionally hot and humid days, take your activity indoors to one of your local community centres. From squash to fi tness to swimming, you will have a great experience. Th e Ajax and McLean Community Centres are ready to serve your recreational needs. Visit the Town of Ajax website at www.townofajax. com for more informa- tion. Eat - Following activity, your body is ready to ‘re-fuel’ its energy supply. Se- lect foods with car- bohydrates and proteins for optimal re- fuelling. With the weather reaching the double-digits and long weekends around the cor- ner it may be time to host an outdoor party. While the thought of planning a party can be daunting, with these hints, you will have people envious of your party planning skills. Before you start planning, consider the following: Will it be a family aff air or adults only? Is it going to be an evening party, or a Sunday afternoon BBQ? Most importantly, how much do you want to spend? To theme or not to theme While party themes aren’t necessary they can be fun for children and adults. A great party idea for summer entertain- ing is a Hawaiian theme. Try some of these ideas: Buy colourful plastic fl owers at the dollar store, chop off the stem and decorate the patio table, grass or fence. Bring the inside outdoors with vases, candles, and hang- ing lanterns. Vases can be fi lled with bamboo sticks or exotic grasses. Finally you must not forget the Hawaiian themed drinks. Create fruity drinks with colourful umbrellas on the side, or replace limes with pineapple wedges. You can pre-pour drinks into cups and keep them cold in a cooler fi lled with ice. A unique product from Cuisinart is the Premium 2 in 1 Blender, which allows your guests to pour their own mixed drinks right from the blender’s dispenser! Leave the blender out where guests can fi ll their cups on their own. Of course you will have to keep an eye on the blender to know when refi lls are needed, as these cold drinks will go fast. Taste of the Tropics Smoothie Makes 5 cups (1.25 L) 2 cups pineapple (fresh or frozen), cut into 1-inch (2.5 cm) pieces (500 ml) 1 mango, cut into cubes (about 1 to 1 1/2 cups [250-375 ml] ) 1 cup frozen papaya (250 ml) 1 frozen banana, cut into 1-inch (2.5 cm) pieces 2 cups orange/peach/mango juice blend (500 ml) 5 ounces dark rum (optional) (145 ml) Place ingredients in blend- er jar in order listed. Press On. Turn blender on high and pro- cess for 25 to 30 seconds until smooth. Press Off once it is smooth. Bring on the food Th ere are many diff erent approaches you can take to serving food at your party. You may want to ask the people coming to the party to bring something. Th is will let your guests feel involved with the party, and of course lessen the workload for you. A buff et-style party is easy to set up and allows guests to help themselves to food throughout the gathering. It also encourages people to mingle. Today there are many great accessories and appliances that make serving food and bev- erages easy & fun. Th e great thing about letting your guests help themselves is that it gives you more time to be the host. Take a weight loss journey It’s all about how you feel when you get there. Come home to clean with Budget Maid. “Why are you paying so much to have your home cleaned?” is just one of the questions asked by Budget Maid owner, Barb Bredin. “Why people open up their homes and their valuables to a private individual without the benefi t of bonding and insurance never ceases to amaze me. Most times they’re paying this person the same rate Budget Maid charges and, on top of it, the customer’s supplying the cleaning products.” Then there are those who pay other cleaning companies twice what Budget Maid charges. Bredin says she can’t understand how people are foolish enough to pay the astronomical costs some companies are charging. She believes that with today’s busy lifestyle, having your home cleaned is no longer a luxury and for that reason it should be reasonably priced. Making your life easier, quickly and affordably, is what Budget Maid is all about. Like they’ve been doing for almost 20 years, Budget Maid will customize your service to fi t both your needs as well as your budget and with the launch of their new web site www.Budgetmaid.ca, you can see exactly what Budget Maid has to offer. When they say “Excellent Service at an Excellent Price”, they mean it. HAVE YOUR HOME PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED FOR AS LITTLE AS $59.95 WE’RE ‘MAID’ FOR YOUR BUDGET Fun backyard activities for summer holidays (NC) Summer vacation is a favourite time of year for many school children. Th e outdoor rec- reation team at Canadian Tire has the following tips to help parents keep children entertained. Backyard fun S et up a picnic table or folding table and bring out crayons, paper and fi nger paints. A sand and water table is great for kids as it has two separate sides for water and sand and comes with an umbrella, shovel, boats and bridges. Don’t forget to get a table that includes an umbrella to help protect kids from harmful UV rays. Th ere are lots of fun activities for en- ergetic children. If you have the space, a trampoline is an ex- cellent way for chil- dren to practice bal- ancing while having a fun time. To keep the kids safe, choose a trampoline with a screen or enclosure. Sure to be a hit with neighbourhood kids, infl atable waterslides and play centres are easy to infl ate and are a safe, fun way to keep kids active and cool. Easy to set-up badminton, croquet and Boc- ce ball sets are great games for the whole family to spend time together in the backyard or even at the beach. Cool summer fun Keep kids cool this summer. Visit a store like Canadian Tire that has everything from small plastic pools for toddlers to larger infl atable or steel- framed pools that the whole family can enjoy. Keep your kids safe around water. Place the new turtle wristband around your child’s wrist and a spill into the water will set off an immediate alarm. For tired moms and dads, turn the pool into a spa by simply inserting a hotpod fl oating spa into an indoor or above ground swimming pool. Regardless of outdoor activity, don’t forget to keep kids hydrated and protect them from the sun with sunscreen and hats. Enter as often as you’d like, using one application per entry. Attach your entry form to the back of an 8 x10 or 8 x 12 in. photograph and bring to Black’s SuperStore, Ajax. Photo’s must have been taken in the last 2 years. In a sense, these founders con- tinue to enjoy the whir of the leath- er ball as it’s released by the bowler and the crack of the bat dur- ing matches on warm sum- mer days. That’s be- cause five of the original members have as their final resting spots a place under the turf on the playing field at the corner of Monarch Avenue and Clements Road East. There, the ashes of George Dunn, Cyril ‘Squib’ Thompson, Geoff Thomp- son, Jack Brooks and Dick Rich- ards reside at the club they helped carve out of swampland 27 years ago, notes Bob White who, at 76, is one of the few remaining founding members. “The grass grows beautifully where they are now,” says White, president for 46 years. He added that all the burying of ashes has taken place over the past eight years, the last one for Richards two years ago, complete with a cere- mony and a toast to the memories they helped create. While the original club members were immigrants from England, White says proudly that it is now a truly multicultural club. Looking out onto the field, he mentions the native countries and areas of a number of players out for a recent practice session for the Ajax sec- ond division team that competes in the Toronto and District (T and D) Cricket League team. He points out India, West Indies, Pakistan, East Africa and Australia as some of the home countries. In fact, White laughs while re- laying that many on Ajax’s T and D team had once lived in To- ronto but, upon learning of the Ajax club’s existence, moved their families to the area so they could continue playing cricket. Memories are close to the surface for White, who remembers the idea of a cricket club germinating from an Anglican church picnic in 1960. Since then, the club has survived two relocations, fires and other vandalism at its clubhouse, and the ebb and flow in member- ship over the years before arriving at its current location in 1980. Memories are preserved throughout the 1,700-square-foot clubhouse, with plaques and tro- phies from matches past adorning hallowed places within the tidy, wooden structure. Ajax over the years has hosted the best cricket teams in the world. White points to the club’s hosting of 13 interna- tional matches in 2001 as part of an International Cricket Council (ICC) Trophy World Cup qualify- ing event as a coming of age for the Ajax club. That year, teams from Saudi Arabia, Australia, England and India, to name a few, played in Ajax. Of late, the Ajax club -- the only active cricket club in Durham Re- gion -- is making new memories, attracting new members, includ- ing a large number of youths and teens, and playing at a high level in the T and D league. According to Ajax Cricket Club captain Geoff Freshwater, the club played only ‘friendlies’ against ei- ther local Toronto clubs or touring sides from around the world for several years. However, a year ago, the Ajax club opted to launch a competitive program and joined the T and D league. Fielding one team in the league’s third division last year, the Ajax cricketers rose to the challenge, winning the championship in their inaugural year back in the league. That success meant promotion to the second division this year. Ajax has added another third-division squad to its T and D lineup, as well as forming a junior team (under- 13) to compete in the league this year. All this, says Freshwater, has re- sulted in a resurgent club over the past two years, with most weekend dates during the summer taken up by T and D matches, most of which are played in Ajax. “The atmosphere within the club is electric,” says Freshwater, an Australian ex-pat who’s played the game since age eight. All told, the new initiative to- ward a more competitive Ajax club has brought the membership up substantially to about 60 mem- bers, 50 of which play on the T and D teams, says Freshwater, adding that the grassroots are brought into the club through a junior program to teach cricket skills for youths between ages eight and 19. This summer, the club will invite the world once again, as touring sides from Kenya, Bermuda, Ar- gentina and the U.S. are expected to stop by for a friendly. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, JUNE 25, 2006 PAGE 23 A/P SPORTS sportsdurhamregion.com THIS WEEKEND The Ajax-Pickering Dolphins Peewee football club takes on Markham at Kinsmen Park at 4 p.m. Sunday. It’s a Mo- bile Showroom which just may be the only one in Canada. “The day is gone when you carried some brochures and a sample window to a customer’s home,” explains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired North York Mo- bile Library truck and installed interior walls along with all of my window sam- ples.” When you call Durham Windows and Doors for a free estimate, Wayne will show up at your door with his Mo- bile Showroom which you’ll enter by way of a sliding patio door. Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Vinyl Window Designs series of vi- nyl windows which you’re free to oper- ate and you’ll discover the many spe- cial features including how they can be cleaned without going outside. “After being in this business for 26 years, I can honestly say these are the fi nest windows on the market,” says Wa yne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All Vinyl Window Designs win- dows come with Low E Glass which fi l- ters out the ultraviolet rays keeping your home cooler in the summer and elimi- nate fading of your curtains, drapes and furniture. All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hard- ware and glass. Wa yne would also like his customers to know that he does all of the estimates personally, eliminating the cost of a sales- person. Durham Windows and Doors also does all of its own installations, which en- sures that every customer gets a high qual- ity job done at the best possible price. Durham Windows and Doors is lo- cated at 696 King St. W. in Oshawa. For more information call (905) 579-2222 or 1-888-576-8575.
