In the first quarter of 2005, about 1.76 million trips were taken on municipally-operated public transit services. In the first quarter of this year, under the banner of Durham Region Transit, the number jumped to almost 1.95 million. Three mu- nicipal transit systems merged into a regional service on Jan. 1. “We’ve very happy with our new service out there,” said DRT general manager Ted Galinis. “We’re very happy with our new service out there. “We had a fare increase and that usually means a three-to- six-per cent decrease, but we gained 10.5 per cent. So, we’re very pleased.” Most of the increase came with DRT East, covering Oshawa and Clarington, and Mr. Galinis says it’s due to more students now at- tending the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). More Pickering residents riding bus Pickering school receives 8 out of 10 By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer DURHAM — A Durham school is at the top of the class in the Fraser Institute’s 2006 elementary report cards. Waverly Public School in Oshawa almost doubled its score, notch- ing a 10 out of 10 in the annual report released June 9. The year before, it scored 5.1 and over the last five years, ranked 554 of more than 2,500 schools. Waverly tied for first place in this year’s report out of 2,818 schools. “And it should be,” said Waverly principal Dave Brownson. “We have a great staff and I think our students were somewhat underachieving in the past years.” To r ank the schools, the Fraser Institute, an independent public policy organization, uses data from the Ontario Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) tests for Grade 3 and Grade 6 students, in this case from the 2004/05 school year. In Pickering, Maple Ridge Public School notched an eight out of 10, a big improvement over the 5.9 it scored in the last ranking. Maple Ridge jumped from an average ranking of 855 in recent years to 333 this year. Other top Durham schools in- cluded Glen Dhu PS in Whitby, at 9.4, Beau Valley PS in Oshawa, with a 9.1, St. Joseph Catholic School in Uxbridge, 8.9, and St. Leo CS in Brooklin at 8.7. At Waverly PS, a number of fac- tors contributed to its success. Mr. Brownson said in the past, EQAO test results weren’t as big a priority, but in recent years, the school has worked hard and re- aligned its curriculum with provin- cial expectations. “Our staff is very proud of our school; they’re proud of their achievement,” said Mr. Brownson. In Ajax, Applecroft Public School has also seen significant improve- ment, with its Fraser score going from 6.5 in 2004 to 8.5 in 2005. The improvement has increased its rank to 182 from 855 in the last five years. Applecroft’s principal, David Royle, credits staff, students and parents for the success. “I think it’s a continual commit- ment; we have staff that have stayed FLOWER GIRL Ron Pietroniro / News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Jocelyn McGarvey waits patiently for her flowered cheek to be completed at the William Dunbar Public School’s annual Fun Fair. Under the agreement, passengers pay only one fare and can take a bus any- where in the region, moving between Durham and GO buses. “It’s manna from heaven” for some passengers, Mr. Galinis states. One problem DRT has right now is making more people aware of the co-fare agreement. “A lot of people, despite our best efforts,” don’t know it’s available, he says. Also, DRT Specialized Services had an overall 10- per cent increase in acces- sible passenger ridership, which Mr. Galinis says is re- lated to service being avail- able in Clarington and the northern municipalities. The growth, he adds, is “very positive.” Northern communities are getting more special- ized service and about 1,100 people used it in the first quarter. “They’re using it and it’s growing.” The future looks bright for DRT, he states. “Further increases are ex- pected in the 2006 and 2007 school year as UOIT reach- es its full complement with fourth-year student enrol- ment,” Mr. Galinis says. More rider increases expected in coming years ✦ More from page 1 Catholic board to study its top-scoring schools the course,” said Mr. Royle. “They’ve been very hard working, incredibly hard working.” He said teachers there work together as a team for student support and stu- dents are always given op- portunities to blossom at Ap- plecroft. But not all schools came out on top, according to the report. Ritson Public School in Oshawa scored the lowest in Durham, with a mark of zero and a ranking of 2,803 of 2,818. Last year, it received 1.8 and ranked 2,372 of 2,388 in the last five years. “It does not give a com- plete picture of the school,” said Ritson principal Randy Huebert, noting the Fraser report is based on the EQAO results. “It does not in any way reflect the wonderful pro- gramming we have here at our school,” he said, adding it also does not reflect the support of parents or terrific effort Ritson students display daily. “If the only compara- tive is just a test score, I be- lieve that is a disservice to schools,” said Mr. Huebert. “We are extremely proud of our students at Ritson Pub- lic School. I’m very proud of everything we have going here.” “There’s a lot of things that influence the EQAO results,” said Chris Hurst, a superin- tendent at the Durham Cath- olic District School Board. “I’m not sure of Margue- rite D’Youville because I haven’t studied the results.” He said the scores are only a snapshot because they’re based on a two-day test. Mr. Hu rst said the results will be studied to see what impacted the scores, including the re- sults and strategies of its top- scoring schools to see “how we can learn from them.” “We’re becoming much more scientific at how we’re approaching it,” he said. Mr. Hurst added the board is seeing steady improve- ment and as it gets better at collecting data, should con- tinue to improve. “I’m not a big advocate of ranking,” said Mr. Hurst. “Basically, there are so many factors that come into effect at the end of the day.” He added he understands there has to be some com- parative systems to allow schools to learn from each other. ✦ Catholic from page 1 LASER HAIR REMOVAL LCI-PICKERING 905-831-1110 Hwy 401 & Brock Rd. 1550 Kingston Rd. The Durham Region Transit commission voted to change a transit policy which stated municipalities that wanted to offer free bus rides to events like Canada Day and Home Week would have to pay for it. Prior to the creation of a Durham-wide transit sys- tem, both Ajax and Pickering had “no charge” communi- ty-wide days. At the May 31 meeting of the Durham Region Transit Commission, a motion came forward requesting that DRT grandfather the no charge days for the Pickering May- or’s Christmas lights tours, Canada Day celebrations at Kinsmen Park, and Ajax Home Week’s Waterfront Day. Some councillors said they recalled a debate hav- ing already taken place on the matter. “I understood that who- ever used them would pay for them,” Chairman Roger Anderson said. “I am pretty sure we had an understand- ing. Some people may have just forgotten about it.” After sending staff to dig out the policy, the commis- sion was reissued a Dec. 6, 2005 report indicating that regular charter rates be charged to the municipali- ties to compensate for over- time requirements. However, the commission decided to go against the earlier report and voted to have staff come forward with a new report on no charge days. A virtual hospital at the University of On- tario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Dur- ham College was recently revealed during the 24th International Nursing and Computer Technology Conference hosted by the Durham post-secondary schools and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. “It gives them what I call the hustle and flow,” said Dr. Jay Shiro Tashiro of Wolfsong Informatics. Dr. Tashiro said he created the virtual hos- pital and worked with DC and UOIT to make the program suitable for Canadian standards. Wolfsong is an educational solutions company in the U.S. Dr. Tashiro said the local schools approached him about creating a Canadian program after seeing him present a speech about the hospitals. In September, UOIT and DC will combine virtual clinical excursions with mannequin simulators and a new Canadian nursing com- petency assessment system for students. The excursions allow students to use their laptop computers to move around in a 3D hos- pital, look at charts and view patient records, select medicines and more. “It is what some people call a serious game,” said Dr. Tashiro, who is also an adjunct associ- ate professor at UOIT and DC. With the computer programs, students can experience cultural differences they’ll encoun- ter when dealing with patients, while with the mannequins, they can practice bedside man- ners and higher thinking. Dr. Tashiro said the virtual hospital system could improve the Ca- nadian health system. UOIT and DC students are already using mannequin simulators. “You could come in and think you were in a hospital ward,” said Dr. Carolyn Byrne, dean of health sciences at UOIT, referring to the lab where students practise on the mannequins She added the students are enjoying work- ing with the simulators. “This gives them the confidence to prac- tise and practise before they get into the real world,” said Dr. Byrne. With the eight simulators, which come in an assortment of ages, students can practise diagnosis skills by programming symptoms for the mannequins to display. “It’s unbelievable for someone like me who was educated so long ago,” said Dr. Byrne. “I think it is part of the future. We’re fortunate enough to be brand new; we’re able to use the newest technology.” The virtual hospital project received $750,000 from the Ministry of Health a year ago. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel.” Staff was instructed to investigate an access fare pass for Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) recipients and report back to the DRT commission at the first meeting after the summer recess. The commission passed a motion supporting the pass in principle follow- ing a presentation made by Terri Mc Cabe. Ms. McCabe, a manager w ith Community Living in Oshawa, along with a number of her clients and co-workers, attended the last two commission meet- ings to emphasize the need for an access fare pass for residents living with intel- lectual disabilities and on fixed incomes. Ms. McCabe told the commission the nearly $90 monthly DRT bus pass was a barrier to her cli- ents’ participation in the community, as they live on no more than $954 per month. OC Transpo in Ottawa offers a community bus pass to residents who re- ceive benefits under the ODSP. The pass costs under $30, which is nearly $60 less than the usual cost. “How it is done isn’t what is relevant to us,” Ms. McCabe said. “What is relevant is the importance of its exis- tence.” Her clients need the bus to travel to see family, get to doctors appointments, to work and shopping. Currently, she said, the fare is too expensive for most of her clients. Staff however, submitted a report, which discusses the issues seen in relation to a special fare. Staff reported to the commission that the min- istry of community and social services would not provide 80-20 cost sharing funds for an access fare. The report also states a special fare would be open to a challenge as discrimi- natory against persons with disabilities who are not in receipt of ODSP benefits. Staff estimates the in- crease in ridership would be less than one per cent and it would increase of- fice and administrative costs by $830,000. A recent report from Harbour Consulting rated the plant as second in North America in productivity. That means a car at No. 2 takes less time to make than at all but one other plant on the continent. Oshawa’s No. 1 Car Plant also cracked the top 10, finishing seventh. But awards are nothing new to the workers at the three plants at the General Motors Autoplex here. Not only do they make cars efficiently, they also build them extremely well. A J.D. Power and Associates survey found plant 2 was tops for quality across North America last year. All of which leads one to logi- cally assume that GM’s international headquarters in Detroit should seriously rethink its strategy to close No. 2 and shut down a shift at Car Plant No. 1 at the end of this year. Sure the auto giant has severe business problems with its North American operations. GM has been bleeding red ink for a number of years and has to cut jobs and costs in order to try to regain competitiveness with off-shore producers. To that end, the auto giant announced widespread job cuts over the next few years which would see 30,000 workers let go. That means some plants are due to go. But of all the plants to close, one would think GM would target those which are least efficient and most cost-ineffective. For a variety of reasons, Oshawa’s plants consis- tently out-produce and outperform General Motors operations south of the border. While it’s clear politics played a significant role in last year’s decision to spread the GM pain, good business sense would suggest GM might reconsider the performance it gets from Oshawa and would endeavour to keep a high-quality workforce on the line. At the very least, General Motors knows that, once it decides where to build its flex plant, it can’t do any better than Oshawa. The record shows workers here produce at the highest levels year in and year out. It would be bad business on the part of GM to go anywhere else. Smoking ban is just what is needed To the editor: As a respiratory therapist, I am a daily witness to the negative effects of cigarette smoking. I work in the Lakeridge Health Re- spiratory Rehabilitation Program, a comprehensive education and exercise program for people suffering with chronic lung dis- ease. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), results in a difficulty in moving air into and out of the lungs easily. Most people develop COPD because they smoked. COPD is a major cause of death and disability in Canada. I fully support the ban on smoking in all enclosed public places and workplaces. Sixteen thousand Ontarians die each year of tobacco-related disease, and second-hand smoke is a major contributor to chronic lung disease and lung cancer. The key goals of the Smoke-Free Ontario strategies are to help people quit smoking and to prevent young people from taking it up. The government should be congratulated for bringing in this legislation. One Canadian dies from COPD every hour. If you are currently smoking, find a way to quit. See your family doctor and discuss smoke-cessation strategies. If you are smoking or have currently smoked or are coughing regularly, bringing up mucus or getting breathless with simple chores, speak to your family doctor about a breathing test that can diagnose COPD. The Lung Association, for which I volunteer, has resources on COPD and smoking cessation. Call 1-866-717-2673 or online at www.lung.ca/breathworks. T his much is certain: Durham’s kids are all right. The week following Father’s Day, the Durham Region Media Group’s an- nual Faces of the Future publication, which profiles exceptional students re- gion-wide, will make its appearance. It’s the sixth edition -- and the largest yet. Much has changed since the inau- gural edition in 2001, which profiled 81 high school students (the 2006 ver- sion of Faces, for example, looks to top out at 485 students from elementary, secondary and post-secondary ranks). This year’s publication covers 207 Dur- ham Region schools, ranging from 169 Grade 8 elementary, to 36 secondary, to Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. A quick scan of the voluminous piles of nomination forms which will soon make their way into Faces ’06 reveals, as it has in years past, a positively stun- ning array of talent possessed by the young people of this area. Each student profiled is pictured (ei- ther individually or in a group), and has a brief write-up with their nominator’s comments, as well as a list of notable achievements and future plans. With that in mind, looking back on past editions is becoming increasingly interesting as time passes. There’s an Olympic athlete (Whitby hurdler Priscilla Lopes), a professional football player (Uxbridge’s Jeff Keep- ing), an American collegiate volleyball player of the year (Oshawa’s Stacey Gordon) and a national junior hurdling champion (Pickering’s Paul Martin) among those profiled in that first edi- tion alone. And that’s not even mentioning the myriad others in the first and subse- quent editions who have secured schol- arships through their artistic and ath- letic endeavours, and have been able to pursue their dreams at the highest of levels. One other thing to keep in mind: in six years, it’ll have been more than 2,000 students profiled. Stay tuned -- especially with some of those future plans happening sooner rather than later. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, June 11, 2006 PAGE 7 A/Pdurhamregion.com Community safety the focus as various groups bring day of activity to Pickering Driver returned to work without delivering three passengers By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer DURHAM — A Durham bus driver has been fired after leaving three special- needs students on a bus in a parking lot Monday and returning to work. Among the students left on the Durhamway Bus Lines (DBL) vehicle was autistic woman Michelle Donaghy of Whitby, who at- tends G.L. Roberts CVI in Oshawa. “If this had been the weather we had the week before, the outcome could have been completely dif- ferent,” said Deborah Donaghy, Michelle’s moth- er, who noted her daughter is non-verbal. “For these children there’s a lot of trust you put into other people,” she said. “You’re putting their lives in their hands.” Michelle Donaghy is 18 years old, but her mind has the capacity of a three-year- old, said Ms. Donaghy. For safety, Michelle Donaghy is harnessed into the bus seat to prevent her from undo- ing her seat-belt in her ex- citement to get to school. “Of course the mother and father had the right to be upset, I’d be upset too,” said Bill Ing, DBL manager. Mr. Ing said Monday’s driver usually works in the company’s office, but has her bus driving licence and was filling in for someone else. Around 9 a.m. the 15- year employee returned to the parking lot of more than 100 buses, and around 9:45 a.m., the company re- ceived a call from a school inquiring about where the students were, said Mr. Ing. “At that point, that’s when her face went white and she ran out to the parking lot,” he said. “Fortunately, everyone was OK. We delivered the children right away.” He added some of the windows on the bus were open while the students were alone. Since the incident, DBL has had meetings and is- sued bulletins regarding safety. “Needless to say, we had to terminate the driver,” he said. “There’s no second chances for something like that. “Having to fire her was very unfortunate, I felt bad having to fire a good em- ployee.” Although there was a message from DBL on her machine at home, Ms. Donaghy is upset no one contacted her at work about the incident. She added G.L. Roberts didn’t have much information about the in- cident and she had to be filled in when she called the company back. “My daughter is non-ver- bal,” said Ms. Donaghy. “For the most part, I wouldn’t have known anything other than what the teacher wrote in her school book, that the bus got lost.” Ms. Donaghy said the ex- perience hasn’t appeared to impact her daughter’s de- sire to ride the bus. “She would have just been in her own little world,” said Ms. Donaghy of the inci- dent. After 20 years, automaker could leave Durham By Izabela Jaroszynski Staff Writer DURHAM — After 20 years in Whitby, the BMW Group Canada headquarters might be leaving town. As a result of tremendous growth, the German-based luxury car company is look- ing for more space, a spokes- man for the company said. Kevin Marcotte said that BMW, which has had its Canadian headquarters in Whitby since 1986, is cur- rently considering three op- tions to accommodate the growth. The first option is to keep the current headquar- ters -- which was renovated in 2002 to the tune of $6 mil- lion -- and expand into local spaces already owned by the company. One such space is the 58,000 square-foot ware- house, which was vacated early this year when the com- pany built a new $12 million national parts warehouse in Whitby. The other spaces would be the two retail facili- ties, currently housing BMW Durham and Mini Durham, which were sold to an inde- pendent retailer at the be- ginning of 2006 and will be vacated when the retailer moves into a new Durham location. The next two options, Mr. Marcotte said, are to relocate to an existing larger facility or a new custom-built facility. If one of the later two op- tions is chosen, the head- quarters will most likely be relocated outside Durham’s borders, Mr. Marcotte said. “If we do move, we are looking for a more cen- tral GTA location,” he said. “Something closer to the air- port and closer to downtown (Toronto).” A final decision will be made by senior management following an evaluation of all the options during a meeting in Munich, Germany, later this year. “No option is favoured at this time,” Mr. Marcotte said. “Right now we have three op- tions on the table.” Mr. Marcotte said that no layoffs are planned and all current employees working at the BMW headquarters would be given the option of relocating to the new loca- tion should there be a move. BMW has had a long history in Whitby since opening the original headquarters with 50 employees in 1986. The 1990s saw major investment in local facilities, including modernization and expan- sion of the parts warehouse. In 2001, BMW announced the $6 million expansion of the headquarters. Currently, the company employs more than 200 people in Whitby. Is BMW on the move? THE NEWS ADVERTISER, June 11, 2006 PAGE 9 A/Pdurhamregion.com Research project first of its kind in Durham By Jillian Follert Staff Writer DURHAM — There are hun- dreds of people in Durham Region without a place to call home, but ask them if they consider them- selves homeless and you’re likely to hear “No.” They might spend a few weeks sleeping at a friend’s place, then a few more crashing with relatives. Then it’s off to a shelter for a bit, before another round of couch- surfing. “They have a place to go at night, they’re not living on the street, so they might not identify as a homeless person,” said Dr. Wendy Stanyon, an assistant pro- fessor of nursing at Durham Col- lege and UOIT. “If you’ve never had stable housing before, that might seem normal.” This is just one of the trends that emerged after Dr. Stanyon and the students in her third year nursing class conducted a unique study on homelessness in Oshawa. In March, they spent a 24-hour period distributing a census to ac- quire hard data about the number of homeless people in the city’s downtown core, and followed up w ith one-on-one interviews to learn more about how people be- come homeless and which social services they benefit from. While individual agencies keep data on the people they help, and the Durham Region Social Ser- vices Department keeps data on the agencies it funds, this study is the first to look at the big picture of homelessness in Oshawa. “We want to hear from people and find out who they are and whether the services being pro- vided are meeting their needs,” said Mary Menzies, manager of housing development and home- lessness initiatives for the Region. “We know a lot of people who have housing of some kind are still using these services because their housing is inadequate or unsafe... it’s a complex issue.” Dr. Stanyon said she originally envisioned a study that looked at all of Durham Region -- es- pecially the northern municipali- ties where homeless people have trouble accessing services -- but there wasn’t enough manpower. Instead, her students zeroed in on Oshawa’s downtown, where services like soup kitchens, shel- ters and drop-in centres are densely located. What they found was a picture of homelessness that looked very different from Toronto and other urban centres. “In this area the problem is more invisible, we don’t have peo- ple sleeping outside,” Dr. Stanyon noted. “But that doesn’t mean the problem isn’t there.” The numbers are still being an- alyzed, but what is clear is that many people in Oshawa have no home of their own, or live in un- stable or unsuitable housing. Major challenges include ac- cess to medical care, obtaining identification and finding afford- able housing. Dr. Stanyon pointed out that it has been 20 years since new, af- fordable housing units were built in the area. She is concerned about the number of slum apartments in Oshawa, where tenants with few resources pay upwards of $600 a month to live in unsanitary condi- tions, often without electricity or other utilities. Once the data from the study is tabulated, it will be used by agen- cies to tailor services to meet the needs of the community and re- search articles will be published. Dr. Stanyon said a second census is planned for the fall, to track sea- sonal changes in homelessness. In the meantime, she is pleased that her nursing students had the opportunity to hit the streets and see the faces of homelessness first hand -- an experience she said will be invaluable when they are on the front lines of health care. “The students were incensed by what they saw, which is good,” she said. “It’s an experience that will live in them forever.” Hi t ting the streets to study homelessness Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo Leapin’ Lizards AJAX – Ta ylor McWatters plays leap frog during Lakeside Public School’s 16th annual fun fair and community barbecue. But what are the risks and benefi ts associated with drug therapy versus “talk” therapy? According to a survey published by Consumer Reports in 2004, in which more than 3,000 respondents participated, drug treatments may work faster on symptoms, but they also have more serious side effects than people realize. Talk therapy with a qualifi ed mental health practitioner, on the other hand, can yield equally effective results as medication – but without any long-term dependency or undesirable effects. Dr. David Direnfeld is one such practitioner. As a clinical psychologist who specializes in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), he has observed fi rst-hand the remarkable impact CBT has had on his patients. “I have seen astonishing, dramatic changes in patients who never thought it was possible to overcome their fears and worries,” he says. CBT is an evidence-based breakthrough in mental health care. Dr. Direnfeld, who has been practicing CBT since the early 90s, is now the clinical director of the Centre for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Ajax, a treatment facility committed to using research-based mental health treatments. “Helping people change their lives using CBT is, honestly, the most rewarding part of my job. It’s quite astounding.” Here’s how it works. CBT focuses on how our thoughts infl uence our feelings and behaviours. Every mental disorder – like depression, anxiety or panic disorder – is the result of distorted, irrational thought patterns. Usually there is a particular situation or trigger – like, for example, dirt/germs, a crowded mall or a traumatic Beyond Freud: how talk therapy can change your life memory – which causes an unusually high level of distress. It is not, however, the situation or trigger which causes distress. It is, instead, our distorted interpretation of it. And these habitual distortions in thinking – or “automatic thoughts” – can cause people to withdraw, panic, avoid situations or engage in other self-defeating behaviour. CBT uses structured techniques to change distorted thought patterns by weakening the connection between distressing stimuli and our automatic reactions to them. During the CBT treatment, patients discover new ways of dealing with diffi cult situations, often through gradual exposure to them. The goal is accurate and rational thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Drugs alone might make you feel better faster – sure. But well-researched “talk” treatments like that of CBT are just as effective – and longer lasting. Just look at the evidence. Study after study shows CBT to be as effective as medication in treating conditions like depression, and better than medication for treating conditions like anxiety. “These are well-documented facts,” says Dr. Direnfeld. “So it’s my job, essentially, to work myself out of a job – and help patients get better.” The Centre for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is located at 95 Bayly Street West, in Ajax. Knowing yourself is therefore essential to understanding why you choose the clothing you wear every day. Here are some ideas to consider the next time you open your closet doors or decide to do some shopping for yourself. The Vicarious: You wear the clothes that other people like or buy for you. You live vicariously through their ideas of you and have not yet acknowledged your own sense of self so your style is not defi ned The Shopaholic: Whether you will ever wear what you buy does not seem to matter because you buy it anyway. Your closet is full of clothes and yet you have nothing to wear The Sale Addict: You scout the sales racks to get the very best deals. You are buying based on price alone. Style tends not to matter, so again, your closet is full of stuff that you will never wear OR have forgotten all about. What is your fashion personality? What is your fashion personality? Advertising feature by Image Matters The Age Blocked: You became emotionally attached to a particular time in your life and have been dressing for it ever since. You stopped being aware of current fashion trends during a particular year and have never looked back. What are those clothes saying about you TODAY The Repeat Offender: How many pairs of black outfi ts do you own? Are you sure that the colour Black is a good one for your skintone? Why do you have so much of the same colour in your closet? The Closet-Paralyzed: Yo u love to shop and have money to spend. You have closets full of beautiful clothes (many of them duplicates) and yet you can never fi nd anything to suit the occasion. What are you going to do with all those clothes!! The Size-Deluded: Yo u buy big, baggy clothes to cover the extra pounds OR you prefer the look of tight-fi tting clothes because you feel they make you look thinner. Have you honestly looked in a full-length mirror lately? Buying your size is essential. The Colour Blind: Big prints and loud colours make you feel good. Is this style working for your body type and stature or would smaller patterns and certain colour families be better for you? Navigate traffi c home, pick up kids, stop at the store for groceries, cook, clean, do homework, and check in on your aging parents. Then pack everyone into the minivan for the nightly ritual of soccer, dance and hockey. By the time you get home it’s time for the kids to go to bed and for you to check a few e-mails and catch up on some business reading. Before you know it, it’s time for you to get to bed so you can restart the cycle. Sound familiar? Is it no wonder that women today are feeling increasing amounts of stress? A 2001 Heart and Stroke Foundation study found that 45% of Canadian women frequently feel stressed by work, family responsibilities and/or family fi nances. More than half felt they didn’t have enough time for family, friends or partners, and/or things they would like to do. Taking time for yourself is becoming increasingly important (and rare!) as a means to reduce stress and more and more women are relying on spa treatments to relax, recharge and renew. What better way to reduce stress than escaping to the tranquility of soft music and treatments that keep you looking and feeling your best? Stress won’t go away. The foundation of which can be provided by the right stylist who asks the right questions. The quality of your consultation will give you an idea of what is possible for your hair. A great way to pick a stylist is to look for someone whose hair you’d love to have and ask them who their stylist is and voila, you have your stylist. Healthy hair is the most beautiful hair. To regain your hair’s sheen and smoothness, head to your salon for an intense conditioning treatment. The effects will last from four to six weeks and sandwiching treatments within that time will consistently improve the condition of your hair. Hair colour is somewhat trickier. What you pay for at the salon is the knowledge of the stylist. The quality and accuracy of application shows in the results. Correcting an at-home colouring can be very costly so at the very least have a professional consultation. The right hair colour/tone can work wonders for your complexion and make you look healthier overall. I usually ask a simple question of my clients: “If you had a pink or orange T-shirt which one would you wear?” The four possible responses are: pink, orange, neither or both. We know what we look and feel the best in your answer allows me to create a customized result that will turn heads. Who says you can’t still look and feel beautiful. After all, if anyone deserves to feel gorgeous, it’s the mothers among us. Here are quick tips from Suave (www. homebasics.ca) to help you make the most of the things you have on hand. Beautiful scents Save expensive perfumes and colognes for special occasions. To smell wonderful everyday, try a deliciously scented body wash or lotion. Great foundation The pros rarely put foundation all over your face - just on the spots you need it to smooth out blotches and even out skin tone. It looks more natural (you never get that unattractive make-up line at the chin). Let it sink in If you wait for your moisturizer to absorb before applying foundation, your make-up will last longer. Emergency blush A drop of lipstick on your fi nger makes a great blush when you’re on the go. Just be sure to blend it well. Mix and match lips Got a drawer full of lipstick colours that don’t work? Try layering them. Sometimes a combination of two or three colours will give you the shade you’re looking for. Go-go gloss No need for a separate lip gloss. Mix a drop of petroleum jelly with any lipstick (easiest if you do it with a lip brush) and you’ll get gorgeous shine. Savvy shaving Buy body wash instead of soap. Body wash can double as a shaving gel making it a great 2-in-1 deal. Right sizing When applying shampoo or conditioner, pour about a loonie-size amount into your palm, rub hands together, and then distribute evenly throughout hair. The amount needed depends on your hair. If your hair is very short, you may need less. If you want, wash your hair a second time. The second lather-up needs only about half the amount of shampoo as the fi rst. Weather beater Has the sun, wind or salt “fried” your hair? No need to invest in a special deep conditioning product. Just leave your usual conditioner on for 3 - 5 minutes for a special conditioning treatment, whenever your hair has the “blahs.” Tight squeeze To get the most out of your conditioner, squeeze excess water from your hair after shampooing. Conditioners work best on damp hair, not wet. Ajacian heads for the mountains Kyla McDonald to play soccer for West Virginia’s Davis and Elkins College in the fall By Al Rivett Sports Editor AJAX — In the end, a little hos- pitality and some conversation around the dinner table helped Kyla McDonald decide where she would spend the next four years of her soccer career. The 17-year-old Ajax High School grad and longtime Ajax Soccer Club player signed a letter of intent recently to attend Davis and Elkins College (Elkins, West Virginia) on a four-year NCAA Di- vision II athletic scholarship. She notes getting to know head coach Mat Santoro over dinner with his family went a long way toward cementing her decision to attend school there and suit up for the Senators, which play in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Confer- ence (WVIC) against teams from West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsyl- vania. More to the point, McDonald was impressed with the coach’s competitive spirit. “He’s a really nice guy and he had us over for dinner with his family. He really wants to win, which is good, because I’m very competitive also,” says McDon- ald, who’s one of three freshman recruits signed by Davis and El- kins for the 2006-07 season. One other recruit, Kayla Bianchi, also of Ajax, a sophomore transfer from Salem International Univer- sity, will also be on the field for the Senators. The fact the small liberal arts college located in a small town surrounded by the scenic Appa- lachian Mountains also played a role in her decision to go there over scholarship offers from Salem International, Thomas Aquinas, Niagara College and Northwood College. “I am looking forward to it,” says McDonald. “I want to play soccer for as long as I can.” For his part, Santoro, the third- year head coach at Davis and El- kins College, is counting on Mc- Donald to solidify his midfield corps for this coming season. “Kyla McDonald will add some depth and experience in the mid- fielder position for the Lady Sena- tors,” said Santoro on the school’s women’s soccer website. “Kyla brings athleticism and versatility to our team and we are extremely happy to have her with us.” McDonald says her goal to achieve a soccer scholarship to the U.S. took shape last summer as a member of the Ajax Ren- egades under-17 Ontario Youth Soccer League squad. During the course of the season, the team attended showcase tournaments, including the Orange Classic in Florida and the Score at the Shore event in Long Island, New York, where they played in front of nu- merous U.S. college scouts. She’s played every season in the ASC, originally on boys’ teams before branching off into the girls’-only clubs. She gives credit to Derek Johnston, who provided instruction in her early years, and Tom Croft, who guided her in her later years with the ASC. “It was really good to have those two guys as coaches,” says McDonald, who also played soc- cer at Ajax High for all four of her years there. In preparation for the coming season, McDonald says she’ll fol- low a training regimen as mapped out by the coaches at Davis and Elkins. As well, she’ll also play with the Ajax Soccer Club wom- en’s under-21 squad. She’ll travel to Elkins, West Virginia during the first week of August to begin training with the Senators. Most of that train- ing, she says, will be done in the mountains. Davis and Elkins College starts play Friday, Aug. 25 at Bellarmine College in Athens, West Virginia. The women’s soccer season ends in mid-December. Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo Ajax High School student and longtime Ajax Soccer Club player Kyla McDonald will continue her education and her soc- cer career in West Virginia at Davis and Elkins College. She begins training with the Senators women’s soccer team in early August, with the season’s first game slated for Aug. 25. [ Tr ack and field ] Patchett breaks long-standing DEAA record AJAX — An Ajax public school student was a record breaker at the Durham Elementary Athletic Association (DEAA) Track and Field Championships in Oshawa on Wednesday. Julian Patchett, a Grade 8 student at Lincoln Av- enue Public School, shattered a 28-year-old DEAA record in the senior boys’ 800 metres by four seconds in a time of 2:05.08. Tw o weeks ago during a DEAA preliminary meet, Patchett broke the record by two seconds, but only records broken at the finals are recognized. Patchett, who also completes with the Durham Dragons Track and Field Club, also claimed gold in the co-ed relay. Patchett ran the 400-metre leg of the relay, which was the last leg of the race. Getting the baton with Lincoln Avenue in second place, Patchett eventually caught the race leader on turn three to take first place. Julian Patchett TRAIN NOW FOR A NEW CAREER! Durham Attack Black squared off against chief nemesis Niagara Rapids Black in the Canadian East tier 1 final. The teams had met previously at the provincial cham- pionships with the St. Catharines- based Rapids earning a narrow victory in the third and deciding game of the gold-medal final. The Attack earned sweet re- venge, defeating Niagara in straight games, 25-20, 25-22, with most valuable player Danielle Vortisch hammering the winning shot. Black’s Sarah Gilbride and Amy McGrath were named tournament all-stars. The semifinal match represent- ed a stiff test for the Attack girls against Aquilon Jean-de-Brebuf, but Durham prevailed 25–17, 25– 22. In the quarter-final match, Black was pitted against a young, Ottawa Russell Ravens squad and won 25- 4, 25-8. Attack opened pool play with a 25-17, 25-14 win over Aquilon Jean-de-Brebeu. Later the first day, the Attack defeated Anges Bleus ‘B’ of Moncton 25–9, 25-7. They finished the day by defeating the Suns of New Minas 25–9, 25-17. On the second day of pool play, Durham met Les Rouges (Petit Roucher) and again showed very strong play with a decisive victory 25–12, 25–5. Their next match was against their local rivals, DRVC Rebels 14U, and strong defence and power proved too much for the Rebels as the Attack swept them 25-8, 25–18. The final match of the day was with Les Volitives from Quebec. Durham Attack pre- vailed 25–10, 25–10. The national title capped a suc- cessful season for the Attack Black under-14s. They were silver med- allists at the 14U provincials in March and won the Quebec pro- vincials in early April. They also won gold at the tier 2 15U provin- cials in late April. Other team members are Tarah Roberts, Taylor Kuchma, Chelsea Hazelwood, Natasha Nechvatal- Drew, Taylor Warman, Victoria Yo ung, and Molly Shannon. Paul McGrath and Adam Pelton coach the team, assisted by Kate Jansen and Brian Hazelwood.
