Used under License. ©2006 Province finished with Seaton plan Pickering taking cautious approach to what it means for city By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — With a final plan in the books for Seaton, the City of Pickering might now be getting back some of the planning control for the provincially owned land. A plan done by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs was released May 4 and was effective as of May 3. “It essentially is the land-use plan- ning framework that applies to all applications as of that date,” said Bryan Kozman, director of the North Pickering Land Exchange Team. With the Province completing the framework for Seaton, Mr. Kozman said it would be up to the City to fol- low that plan as more detailed work begins on the neighbourhood plans. “It’s already been contemplated the City of Pickering would resume and take on responsibility for the next level of planning,” he said, add- ing the Province would play a moni- toring role. “We have every confidence the City of Pickering is going to implement the plan in the manner the Province articulated it when it released it.” Having not spoken to the Province about the plan or having time to go through it in great detail, Pickering has concerns about getting its plan- ning powers back. The production opens to- night and continues May 11, 12 and 13, with show time at 7 p.m. Scotty Ramage keeps adding to long list of community honours By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — If anyone epitomiz- es a caring Canadian, it’s Pickering’s Scotty Ramage. He was recently named one of 80 recipients of the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award. The award is presented to individuals and groups whose unpaid, voluntary contribu- tions provide extraordinary help or care to people in the community. That definition certainly fits Mr. Ra- mage. He is a member of Bay Ridges Branch 606 of the Royal Canadian Legion, he has been on the training staff with the Pickering Panthers junior hockey team since 1972, he has do- nated more than 175 pints of blood, he volunteers with St. John Ambulance, and he has been known to shovel a neighbour’s driveway or mow a lawn without being asked. “I know they’ll cut my lawn if I’m away on holidays,” he said. Lending a hand comes naturally to Mr. Ramage; it’s just a part of who he is. “If I’m sitting there at the window and I see someone going down the street in the pouring rain, I’ll give them an umbrella and say return it when you can,” he said. “If I see somebody in trouble or needing some help, I’ll stop and help.” His caring nature began early on. Among the many awards, plaques, pic- tures and certificates hanging on his walls there is the one for saving a boy from drowning in his native Scotland in 1955. For Mr. Ramage, helping others makes him feel good. “It makes me happy,” he said. Despite his many honours – Pickering civic award, a Queen’s Golden Jubilee and a volunteer-of-the-year award – he is still proud to be recognized. “It’s an honour just to be nomi- nated,” he said, adding he was once nominated for the Order of Canada. Not that he does all that he does for the recognition. “I love doing it, and if they want to recognize me for doing it, as long as they don’t pay me, I’m happy,” he Pickering says ‘no’ to body rub expansion By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — Council has voted against allowing “big box body rub” in Pickering. At their May 1 meeting, councillors voted 6-1 to uphold an April 24 recom- mendation of executive committee to deny an application to allow the body rub parlour at 905 Dillingham Rd. to be expanded from 160 to 310 square metres. There were several delegations opposed to allowing the expansion, including Edith Montgomery, who spoke on behalf of the opposed own- ers of the commercial condominium complex. She cited problems with water usage (the business has a jacuzzi, showers and does laundry on site) because the units are on a common meter, and parking as two reasons for the opposi- tion. “There isn’t enough parking now and there will be even less parking if this unit is approved,” she said. Wa rd 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean read a letter from the condo board indicating Renata Trent, owner of the body rub parlour, pays an addi- tional amount for water, while Ward 1 City Councillor Kevin Ashe read from a letter from Ms. Trent’s lawyer, Noel Gerry, indicating she has made an agreement to lease six parking spots in an abutting lot to make sure there are no problems. Others in opposition spoke about the parking problem as well, but Ewart Anderson, a pastor at a church in the complex, alluded to another reason for being opposed. “Would you allow such a business to be next to your home or business?” he asked. “If no, why?” Mr. Gerry was attempting to con- vince councillors to change their vote. The Durham District School Board and Durham Occasional Teacher Local of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario reached a tenta- tive agreement around 1 a.m., Mon- day May 8, the same day almost 800 members of the local were scheduled to walk off the job. “I think at the end of the day, there was a positive sense that this was a collective agreement that would move things forward in a positive way,” said Sally McIlveen, the Durham District School Board’s employee relations su- perintendent. “I think both sides worked very hard to ensure the critical things they need- ed were there.” The Durham local was looking for higher wages, benefits, priority hiring for full-time and long-term positions, and timetable improvements. “You always negotiate for an agree- ment, you don’t do negotiation for a strike,” said Ingrid Thompson, Dur- ham local president. “We’re happy we were able to come to an agreement as well as some other things.” The two sides agreed to meet for the Sunday bargaining session after a function they were both at Friday, said Ms. McIlveen. The May 7 session began at 6 p.m. and both sides were ready for a strike if necessary, said Ms. McIlveen. “I’m very happy we did sit down even though it was very late, and we did get an agreement,” said Ms. Thompson. Details of the agreement are con- fidential until it’s ratified. It will be presented to local members May 15 at 5 p.m. Ms. Thompson hadn’t talked with any members about the agreement by Tu esday morning, but said everyone is relieved there wasn’t a strike. Along with the low strike pay, the emotional toll and tension caused by one also impacts local members, she added. Something new for your Community Child needs plastic surgery for facial wounds DURHAM — A toddler who was airlifted to hospital after being freed from a mangled car will require plas- tic surgery for facial lacerations suf- fered in a spectacular accident that closed Hwy. 401 in Oshawa Monday evening. Meanwhile, a 28-year-old man who was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled is listed in critical but stable condition with multiple fractures, Whitby OPP said. The 20-year-old female driver of the car escaped with minor injuries, police said. Rush-hour traffic on the westbound 401 was snarled for hours Monday as emergency work- ers rushed to tend to the injured and police investigated the incident. OPP closed the westbound lanes between Park and Thickson roads at about 5:45 p.m. after a 1992 Mazda veered into a ditch on the north side of the 401 and rolled, ejecting a 28-year-old male passenger and trapping a two-year- old child in the back seat. The car came to rest on its wheels. Paramedics arriving on scene at- tended to the child until Oshawa and Whitby firefighters performed an ex- trication, freeing the youngster from the wreckage. A car seat prevented the child from suffering more serious injuries, fire officials said. Police said the 20-year-old female driver was able to escape from the car on her own, suffering a concussion but no other serious injuries. Onlookers watched as two air am- bulances landed on the highway to transport the passenger and child to hospital. Drivers abandoned their cars to walk along the side of the highway and watch the scene unfold, while dozens of curious onlookers gathered along the fence that separates Cham- plain Avenue from the 401. Police have yet to determine ex- actly what caused the crash, which occurred on a stretch of the highway that is currently under construction. Groen / News Advertiser photo Oshawa firefighters, the Ontario Provincial Police, Durham paramedics and two air ambulances responded to a single-car crash Monday evening in the westbound lanes of Hwy. 401 near the Oshawa-Whitby border. “There just aren’t any planning rea- sons to deny this application,” he said. “Expanding from 160 to 310 square metres is the only issue before this council.” He addressed issues brought up at executive committee, including assur- ing that his client would stop expand- ing after this. “They don’t get that big,” he said. “There’s no big box body rub parlours, not even in the heart of Toronto.” At the executive committee meeting last week, Coun. Ashe was the only member to vote in favour of the ex- pansion, arguing his colleagues were against it because of morality issues, even though the business is legal. He continued to argue in favour of the ap- plication. “I won’t support the recommenda- tion to deny the expansion, not be- cause I support body rub parlours... I do that to protect the interests of the taxpayer,” he said. “We’re looking at tens of thousands of dollars to defend this application and I don’t think it is worthy of that discussion.” Mr. Gerry had indicated if council denied the application, which goes against a staff report, he would advise his client to appeal it to the Ontario Municipal Board. Coun. McLean indicated he would change his vote from last week, but when the vote was taken he went with the majority. “I have to take myself away from the moral issue... The planning issues are not there to deny it,” he said, adding the applicant has been there for six years and has not had problems with either the police or bylaw officers. Mayor Dave Ryan said council has a different function than staff, who make recommendations based on planning rules and guidelines. “We have a slightly different role here; ours is one of discretion. It’s within our discretion to determine the wants of the people of Pickering... This is one of the issues where we have to take a stand reflecting the values of the people of Pickering,” he said. Many employees and customers have come to ex- pect smoke free facilities, and the Mississaugas of Scugog Is- land First Nation will make their smoke free regulations effective at the same time as Ontario’s.” Chief Gauthier said, “It is intended that the First Nation’s Smoke Free Code will permit smoking at the Casino to only occur in an outdoor area, and this will be similar to the leg- islation recently enacted by the Province of Ontario in its Smoke Free Ontario Act.” In ac- cordance with the procedures of the First Nation Council, when the draft law is prepared, it will be published in the First Nation community and there will be an opportunity for the First Nation community to provide com- ments prior to its enactment. The Great Blue Heron Charity Casino is owned by the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, and is operated by an affi liate of Casinos Aus- tria International Limited. The Casino is open 24 hours per day, seven days a week and has over 500 slot machines and 60 gaming tables, as well as a full service restaurant and bar. It is located on the reserve lands of the First Nation on Lake Scugog, near Port Perry, and was established in 1997 by the First Nation as part of the First Nation’s economic development plan. The plan calls for 35,000 jobs and a popula- tion of up to 70,000 residents with a mix of densities and housing types in the 15 neighbourhoods. Seaton is supposed to be planned as a model community based on the prin- ciples of sustain- ability. Not that the release of the plan means foundations will be laid this summer. “There is a significant amount of work to happen before a shovel is put in the ground,” Mr. Kozman said. Studies need to be done in- cluding an economic develop- ment report for the 407 corri- dor and the Region of Durham needs to come on stream to do the servicing. “There’s an acknowledge- ment on both sides that there is the next level of planning to do and that’s going to take some time,” Mayor Ryan said, adding he thinks it will be at least three years until any building takes place. There is also the comple- tion of the land swap. The Province is trading some of the land it owns in Seaton for privately owned land on the Oak Ridges Mo- raine in Richmond Hill. That swap was subject to an envi- ronmental assessment, which was completed, but the minis- ter of the environment is now reviewing the many requests to bump up the level of the EA. But, he may finally be forced to slow down as his health isn’t what it used to be. “I’ll have to slow down a bit, I’ve been told,” he said. He does make time for his family and for relaxing. He and his wife Betty try to get away to Scotland every year and this year she wants them to take a trip to Alberta to visit a friend. Ms. Ramage has a few certifi- cates of her own on the wall of their home, but she’s not quite as busy as her husband. “I do enough for the both of us,” he said. “But, if we need her for any- thing she’s willing to jump right in.” The date when Mr. Ramage will receive his award has yet to be announced. ✦ Ryan from page A1 ✦ Pickering from page A1 By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — Silvio De Gasperis may have thrown a wrench in the Province’s plan for Seaton. On the same day the Province released the plan for 70,000 residents on the east side of Duffins Creek, Mr. De Gasperis won the right to challenge the way the Province came up with that plan. “All we wanted was a fair ap- peal system at the end of the day,” he said Friday. “We just wanted to be treated fairly and like everybody else.” The Woodbridge developer owns 600 hectares in the Duf- fins Rouge Agricultural Pre- serve, which is designated agricultural in the Province’s Central Pickering Development Plan. The City’s growth man- agement study recommended development in the southern area of the preserve, including some of Mr. De Gasperis’ land. Mr. De Gasperis filed his original application in Novem- ber 2004. It asked for an order prohibiting the minister of mu- nicipal affairs from submitting the development plan until the plan is able to be conducted “without limitation and with the participation of the public.” Mr. De Gasperis has main- tained he was never able to give input on the development plan, while future landowners in Seaton were able to. “The City of Pickering never had any input, we never had any input and the other land- owners never had any input,” he said. “(The Province) did what they wanted to accom- plish their plan. They should not preclude us from what they want to do.” In May 2005, a three-judge panel of the Ontario Superior Court ruled it was “premature” to force the Province to con- sider building in the preserve while the plan was still being done. The three-judge panel of the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled that original May 2005 appeal of the process that led to the plan should be heard. It set June 26 as the date for the case to proceed. Bryan Kozman, director of the North Pickering Land Ex- change Team, wouldn’t say if that case will have any effect on the timeline of implementing the plan for Seaton. “I’m not going to comment on a matter that is before the courts,” he said. But I cannot help but wonder if, at other times, they don’t envy it just a little. I am the first to admit that of the two genders women are the better model. The upgrade, if you will. One need only read Gen- esis for evidence of this. God made man, the Beta version, then got most of the bugs out and created woman. If women are the flexibility and intui- tive efficiency of Windows XP, then men are the simplicity and predictability of good old DOS. If women are “The Gold- berg Variations,” men are “Happy Birthday to you.” If women are The Iliad, men are “There once was a man from Nantucket...” Women seem to me more complex, more adaptable, more evolved even than men. But there is a wonderfully comfortable out-of-the-box readiness that men seem to have that women, for all of there splendour, do not. Get- ting to know a woman can take a lot of work. You can get a handle on most men inside of a six-pack. I may be wrong, but I think a lot women see this ease of access that men share and they secretly long for it. This past weekend, I went up to a cottage with a couple of buddies. And from the very first e-mailed communication this trip had the fundamental stamp of Cro-Magnon auster- ity about it. “Come to cottage. Chop down tree. Will get food and beer somewhere.” Twelve words and every- thing I needed to know. And that was as complicated as the weekend ever got. In fact, if anything, the lon- ger we spent together, alone without any exposure to or influence from females, the simpler we became. Given enough time, red meat and fermented grains, a visitor to that island would’ve found only three single-celled or- ganisms sitting on the deck talking about the hottest mi- tochondria they ever shared osmosis with. That’s just the way it goes with men. And that’s precisely why we need women in our lives. The fu- ture of the species depends upon it. But over a couple of days, a man can only devolve so far and it’s a devolution into a very soothing place. We very quickly dispensed with the obligatory chainsawing and stacking of wood and em- barked upon the real work of the weekend; eating, drink- ing and talking. Although, in fact, we never lit one, it seemed to me that the three of us were squatting around a fire all weekend, spears in hand, sometimes telling a story, sometimes listening, very often just staring into the flames. That may be the biggest surprise of all to our female counterparts. How much men value and embrace silence on these trips. After a while an eerie sixth sense settles over everyone. Men have been known to get up, get their mates a beer and sit down again, all without a word. It’s quite something. When men return home from such get-togethers, they are invariably asked the same question “What did you guys do all weekend?” And just as invariably, they give the same answer: “Nothing.” As exasperating and un- fathomable as that response must be to a woman, it is the golden, simple, secret truth. Youth need to feel safe on the job Employers have a role too in helping eliminate workplace accidents It happens every year, but it surely doesn’t need to. It is the tragedy of on-the-job injuries and deaths to young workers who aren’t properly trained to deal with the hazardous materials and machinery they come across. Monday was the kickoff of the Young Workers Awareness Pro- gram, launched at this time of year to coincide with the college and university summer break. Students, if they haven’t already secured summer employment, are surely out there right now, desperate to find work so they can afford to go on to post-secondary school in the fall. But desperate to find work doesn’t always equate to desperate to protect themselves when on a job they so badly need. That’s where employers come in. They have to be certain young, first-time workers are confident, secure and safe on the job, before they leave them to the work. Young workers should be shown what to do, and, under totally safe conditions, be able to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the boss that they are able to handle the de- mands of the job. Of course, the ultimate onus for safety is on the worker herself. She needs to be prepared to ask the questions -- and be satisfied with the answers -- before jumping into the work. The Young Workers Awareness Program has a list of 10 impor- tant questions every young worker should ask before embarking on a summer job. Among the critical queries are: What are the general safety rules for this job? What are the specific hazards of this job? What specific procedures do I have to follow to protect myself? The example set by Paul Kells has had a powerful influence on thousands of young people across Ontario. Mr. Kells has been profiled numerous times on television and in newspapers after he decided to advocate for safety on the job for young people. Mr. Kells is still pressing home his message, and thanks to him and others, young people can feel more safe on the job than ever before. Our taxes go up every year, but the level of service seems to go down. Our mayors and councillors should be looking for inno- vative ways to deliver quality services at lower cost to the taxpayers of the Region. Ta xpayers, particularly those on fixed incomes, just can’t afford this never-end- ing string of tax increases. People could lose their homes and move away if their isn’t some real progress on tax relief and soon! A starting point would be to contract out projects and services when possible, such as maintenance staff. This will cut spending on govern- ment staff and equipment which would save money so governments will not need to increase taxes. People also need to have a choice about how their money is spent, such as for child care rather than the government hiring the staff, providing the facilities, etc. This will help employ pri- vate caregivers, thus stimu- lating small businesses and economic growth. I would like to thank re- porter Crystal Crimi for pointing out the difference between French schools and French immersion schools. She says “the difference between French-language schools and immersion schools is the French school teaches in French whereas an immersion school teach- es French. For students in French board schools, French is in- tended to be their first lan- guage...” I would also like to add that in French schools, students not only learn all subjects in French, starting in Junior Kindergarten, but they are exposed to their French cul- ture and heritage in a setting that is 100 per cent French. In fact, an English class is not introduced until Grade 4. In Durham, the French elementary schools are Corpus-Christi (Oshawa), Jean-Paul II (Whitby), Notre- Dame-de-la-Jeunesse (Ajax) and Antonine Maillet (Os- hawa). The only French high school in Durham is Saint- Charles-Garnier (Brooklin). Again, thanks for clearing up this common misconcep- tion. Post time is 1 p.m. Sports briefs MAY 10, 2006 [ Tr ack and field ] Pickering High athletes golden at Carter Classic AJAX — Tw o Pickering High midg- et-level athletes made golden tracks at the annual Cardinal Carter Track Classic in Toronto. The meet was hosted at Toronto’s Etobicoke Centennial Stadium from May 4 to 6, with more than 2,100 athletes from 106 schools competing. The event gave the Pickering High School coaching staff an opportunity to have eight Grade 9 athletes compete at a high level and establish themselves as the new faces of track and field at the Ajax school. Galenell Sinclair and MacKenzie Moseley led the Trojan attack with four gold med- als. Sinclair posted victories in the midget girls’ 80-metre hurdles and the 100m, and both were the fast- est provincial times posted by a midget girl this season. Sinclair also was a mem- ber of the senior girls’ relay team that placed fourth. Not to be out done, Moseley paced the midget boys’ team with gold-medal performances in the 100m hurdles and the midget boys’ sprint relay, both again were the fastest provincial midget times this season. Moseley was not done as he added a silver medal in the midget boys’ 300m hurdles and was sixth in the 100m. Teammate Brandon Wilson kept himself busy participating in six events. Wilson was a member of the gold medal midget boys’ sprint relay, a member of the junior boys’ relay team that placed second, collected a bronze medal in the midget boys’ high jump, and was fourth in the midget boys’ 300m hurdles, and fifth in the midget boys’ 100m and 200m. Kamayu Duggan was third in the midget boys’ 100m hurdles and was a member of the midget boys’ sprint relay team. Caileb Downey-Brown was a mem- ber of the midget boys’ gold-medal relay team, a member of the junior boys’ silver-medal relay teams and also placed eighth in the midget boys’ 200m. Melody Lee won bronze in the midget girls’ 80m hurdles and was a member of the senior girls’ relay team that placed fourth. Zachary Slater was a member of the junior boys’ silver medal relay team and was also a member of the senior boys’ relay team that won bronze. Slat- er also placed fourth in the junior boys’ 100m, 200m, and long jump. Jameel Williamson, also running in the midget boys’ division, was a mem- ber of the junior boys’ relay team. Ryan Gordon won the senior boys’ 110m hurdles and was a member of the senior boys’ relay team that placed third. Andrew Spence and Christopher Sahadath were members of the senior boys’ relay team that placed third. Jessica Nasmith won bronze in the senior girls’ 400m hurdles. Shenika Schoburgh was a member of the senior girls’ relay team that placed fourth. Pickering ends the pre-season and is in the final preparation stage for the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athlet- ics (LOSSA) Track and Field Champion- ships at Oshawa’s Civic Fields on May 16 and 17. [ Basketball ] Shoot it out on the court this summer DURHAM — Young hoopsters can gain skills at this summer’s Durham City Basketball Shootout Program. But, first, they have the sign up this month. Registration sessions for the shootout program -- which consists of fun-filled sessions of fundamental train- ing, teamwork, and league play -- are at Eagle Ridge Public School (425 Delaney Dr., Ajax) on May 23 from 8 to 9:30 p.m.; at E.B. Phin Public School (1500 Rougemount Dr., Pickering) on May 25 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; and on May 30 at Eagle Ridge from 8 to 9:30 p.m. The program operates twice a week. In 2005, the inaugural year, more than 130 girls and boys participated. Rock goalie in control offensively, defensively for Ajax-Pickering By Al Rivett Sports Editor DURHAM — Getting a win in his se- nior ‘B’ lacrosse league debut with the Ajax-Pickering Rock was a real ‘Rush’ for Pat Campbell. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound netminder, experienced a taste of everything in helping the Rock to a decisive 14-7 vic- tory over the host Brooklin Merchants on Saturday night. He put in a work- manlike 60 minutes on the floor, faced 58 shots, allowed an own-goal late in the second period after the ball ac- cidentally flipped out of his stick, and added two assists off some outstand- ing passes to put the Rock running in transition. “I thought it was a great game. I never like to see the score get out of hand like that, but I thought the refs did a good job. I think Brooklin’s got a real strong club. I thought they were hitting a lot of pipes. I thought we did a good job of holding on to the lead,” said a buoyant Campbell fol- lowing his debut start. Most of all, tasting victory was especially sweet as wins have been few and far between of late for the af- fable goaltender who’s known as ‘Paddy’. The 29-year-old was a mem- ber of the expansion Edmonton Rush of the National Lacrosse League and, as an expansion team, losing was the order of the day. In fact, the Rush won but once en route to a woeful 1-15 re- cord. “I played this winter and I only got one win all winter, so to already have a win in this league is awesome. It sure feels good to get that sour taste of los- ing out of my mouth,” he said. Campbell had previously played in Brampton with the Excelsiors of the Major Series, back in 2001. But, a numbers game in goal caused the Niagara Falls resident to look eastward this summer. And, being a longtime friend of Rock head coach and general manager Paul St. John, the Rock were a perfect fit. “We have great guys and we have a good, fast team, which really helps my game,” says Campbell, who practised twice with the Rock since making his way back from western Canada. “I like to move the ball up the floor and get into the flow of the game. I’m really ex- cited to be here. Paul has put the right pieces of the puzzle together so far. “Paul has discussed with me that it’s my show this year. It’s my first time starting on a summer team and I’m looking forward to it,” says Campbell. And, it didn’t hurt that Jim Veltman, a perennial NLL most valuable player, signed on to play in Ajax-Pickering for a third season. “It’s an honour (to play alongside Veltman),” says Campbell. “I was fortu- nate enough from 1998 to 2000 to play with him in Toronto. Certainly, having him in this dressing room and on the floor was a major factor in my decision to come here.” St. John notes Campbell delivered everything the team knew he would, including making numerous saves, setting the offence in motion through his pinpoint passes up the floor and, perhaps more importantly, refusing to get rattled after putting the ball in his own net in the second period. For the record, St. John believes the referee didn’t whistle the play in, thus the goal shouldn’t have counted. But, nonethe- less, Campbell recovered nicely from the faux pas. “He just laughed it off,” says St. John. “He’s a pro.” Doesn’t take long for Campbell to shake ‘sour taste’ of losing Pat Campbell Ajax-Pickering Rock runs past Brooklin Merchants Craig, Veltman lead way to 14-7 victory By Al Rivett Sports Editor DURHAM — The Brooklin Merchants couldn’t find a way to slow down the Ajax-Pickering Rock in senior ‘B’ lacrosse action on Saturday night. Ajax-Pickering, in its 2006 debut, ex- ecuted its run-and-gun offence to rock- solid perfection, setting a blistering pace on the floor in the early going, all the while running up the score on a stunned Merchants squad. In fact, the Rock scored the first nine goals of the game, including seven first-period markers, en route to an emphatic 14-7 victory in front of a full house at the Luther Vipond Arena. The Merchants refused to lie down, however, coming back strongly in the second period to score four consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 9-4 at one point. But, untimely Brooklin penalties in the last five minutes of the second opened the door to two more Rock power-play markers, allowing Ajax-Pickering to take a commanding 12-5 lead into the final stanza. All told, six of the 14 Rock goals came with the man advantage. For good mea- sure, the Rock also capitalized for two short-handed markers. “We’ve talked since the start of training camp of being fast, being in game shape, and playing run-and-gun lacrosse,” says Rock head coach Paul St. John. “And, we did that from the first faceoff tonight. They took a bunch of penalties in an attempt to slow us down. When we’re firing on all cylinders, we’re a fun team to watch.” Merchants’ head coach Steve McCar- thy says allowing a talented team like Ajax-Pickering a nine-goal cushion is not the way to play winning lacrosse. “They have a very good team over there with the likes of (captain) Jim Velt- man. After the game we talked about whether it’s Ajax-Pickering, Wellington or St. Clair, we can’t afford to spot a team big leads and then have to play catch up,” says McCarthy, whose Merchants fell to 2-2 on the season. McCarthy says there was no reason for his charges’ lethargic start, noting his team had three league games under its belt. “I have no explanation. It’s their first game and our fourth game. We should have been better prepared and we weren’t,” he says. If there was a silver lining for Brooklin, it was a willingness to fight back in the contest after being woefully outplayed in the opening period. “I commended our guys on playing it even through the second and third periods. We started tonight with two players under the minimum because of injuries and we were down two players in the first five minutes. Doing that is tax- ing enough without being behind seven goals in the first period. You’re not going to beat anybody being behind seven goals,” explains McCarthy. Leading the Rock offence were the usual suspects, namely Mark Craig, who picked up where he left off a year ago. The Rock’s leading scorer last season amassed six goals and two assists. All but three of Craig’s goals were assisted by Ve ltman, who finished with an incred- ible 10-point night, all assists. The game marked a winning debut for starting goaltender Pat Campbell, who played with the National Lacrosse League’s Edmonton Rush this past sea- son. Campbell faced 58 shots and, with the exception of an own-goal gaffe in the second period, outplayed his counter- part Scott Wylie, who allowed 12 goals on 48 shots. Wylie got the hook late in the first period, but his replacement, Rick McCulloch fared no better, allowing two goals on the only two shots he faced. Wylie returned to the net for the second and third periods. The Pickering Pirates got the 2006 campaign started in style by taking two wins off the visiting Forest Glen Giants at Brockridge Park last Sunday. The Pirates won the opener 6-2. Pitcher Mike Minarik earned the win. In the nightcap, the Pirates scored a 4-2 victory. Jaymin Parmar earned the win on the mound, with the save going to Romeo Persaud. The league has grown by four teams to 14 this season and will play two all-star games at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. In addition to the league’s own all-star game July 16, the OSSBA will play a rival association June 25. In an effort to showcase the league, the OSSBA will also host a junior tour- nament (players 18-21) in Richmond Hill July 21-23. Part of the festivities planned will include a re-match of last season’s championship series between Burlington and the Durham Chiefs. The County Town Singers presents its annual spring show May 11 to 13. This year’s program is ‘Hooray for Hollywood.’ “It’s a show filled with music and songs from the big screen,” said president Steve MacDonald. “A show for the whole family featuring the entire choral group accompanied by some top-notch musicians.” The choral group was first formed in Whitby in 1967, to honour Canada’s 100th birthday. It was named for the town, known as the county seat in past times. Since then, the group has grown to in- clude singers from across Durham Region and even To ronto. There are more than 60 members, with ages ranging from 18 to 87. Over the years, the County Town Singers have travelled throughout Canada, the United States and Europe, acting as “Canada’s Singing Ambassadors.” The group rehearses Wednesday nights at the Whitby Seniors’ Activity Centre on Brock Street South, under the direction of Barbara Ouellette. The show is at the Dnipro Hall, 681 Dnipro Blvd., Oshawa, at 8 p.m. each night. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students and are avail- able at the door or at www.countytownsingers.com. Partnership helps highlight museum month By Blake Wolfe Special to the News Advertiser DURHAM — Four of Durham Region’s major art museums have teamed up this month to promote Museum Month and bring the public through their doors. Representatives from the Durham West Arts Cen- tre in Ajax, the Station Gallery in Whitby and the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington gathered at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery on April 28 to announce the partnership, a first between the four galleries. “Things are happening across the province this month, but not in this way with partnerships” said David Aurandt, executive director for the McLaugh- lin Gallery. “We are competitors, but we are most powerful when we work together,” said Angie Littlefield, ex- ecutive director for Durham West Arts Centre. The four galleries put out a brochure showcasing the many exhibits and shows taking place at each gallery over the next month. One of the main reasons for the partnership is to draw the public away from the galleries and muse- ums of Toronto, bringing the spotlight back to local artistic talent, and drawing local residents to both local galleries and businesses alike. Ms. Littlefield explained there is an annual $17 million in lost business leaving Durham Region for galleries out of town. “We’re acting together as a constellation against the gravitational pull of Toronto,” Ms. Littlefield said, adding 25,000 brochures have been distributed so far. “The arts are a huge economic attractor.” Oshawa mayor John Gray was on hand to of- ficially designate May as Museum Month. He also echoed the importance of art galleries in Durham Region. “We’ve got to be able to pull people into our com- munities,” Mayor Gray said, adding that promotion of arts and culture will be a major part of council’s agenda next term. Another aspect of the partnership is to promote the various educational programs the four galleries engage in. For the galleries, public education pro- grams are excellent ways of both showcasing local talent and increasing traffic to exhibits. She is about 1.5 yrs old and was one of a number of white cats that came to us after Christmas and is still waiting for a home. She had a litter of kittens when she fi rst arrived who have since found homes. Tucker, a 7 year old spayed fe- male that is a little on the heavy side. She has been in the shelter for 2 years and can be a very af- fectionate cat when she wants to be. She would do better in a home where she is the only animal. Davinci, an orange and white neutered male about 1 year old. He is playful but nervous. He needs a quiet home where he can relax.
