The boy approached the 15- year-old girl from behind as she talked with friends in a hallway at Pine Ridge Secondary School just before noon and placed the serrat- ed blade of a multi-tool knife against her neck, Durham Regional Police said. The girl pushed the boy’s hand away; she wasn’t hurt. The upset student reported the incident to school officials, who called police. A 15-year-old Pickering boy has been charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon. Now all they can do is wait. OMB member Narasim Katary lis- tened for close to nine hours April 27 as both the residents, led by Judy Scott-Jacobs, and the Toronto and Region Conservation authority gave evidence in regards to the TRC’s ap- plication to sever the northern por- tion of a lot it purchased last year at the foot of Marksbury. The residents, who appealed to the OMB a decision by the Region of Durham’s Land Division Commit- tee to allow the severance, argue the waterfront trail will not be able to continue if the severance goes ahead because the remaining property is subject to erosion. “If the land is sold it will take the property away from the City of Pick- ering’s waterfront trail for good,” Ms. Scott-Jacobs said. Her neighbour, Mike Southwood, made a presentation highlighting concerns, including the environmen- tally sensitive nature of the area and that active long-term erosion is a serious threat. He said in 1925 the proposed building lot would have been 55.2 metres from the top of the bank, 37.2 metres in 1971 and today is 32.6 metres. Pickering students show British Columbia visitors the Ontario way of life By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer PICKERING — Life was turned upside down for small-town British Columbia students recently visiting St. Monica Catholic School. A group of 24 students from the B.C. rural town of Smithers were staying with Pickering youths to get a taste of big-city life as part of a YMCA cross-cultural exchange program. The group arrived April 23 for an eight-day stay. St. Monica students visit Smithers, which has a pop- ulation of about 5,500, June 2 to 9. “Your (municipality) is way bigger, we don’t even have a mall,” said Haley Olson, one of the B.C. students. At age 13, she attends Smithers High School, which goes from Grade 8 to 12. Because it’s a ski and tourist area, everything in Smithers is very expensive and people often drive two hours for grocery shopping and four hours to buy clothes, said Haley. In Ontario, their cross-culture trip in- cluded visiting the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Old Spaghetti Factory, a baseball game, Niagara Falls, the CN Tower and the Eaton Centre. “We went to a Blue Jays game and it was really fun,” said Smithers’ Richard Shanmugaveloo, age 14. He added the Rogers Centre was not as big as it looks on television. “I went on the subway for the first time,” noted Haley. “It was scary; every- one looks at you. It was strange and dirty. Everything here is so dirty compared to Smithers.” She added the people in Smithers are more friendly than in the Greater To- ronto Area, where they appear guarded and stressed and make sure everything is locked all times because of crime. Richard said it’s weird not being able to sleep with the window open. The landscape is also a change. “Here it’s so flat,” said Richard. “In Smithers it’s all beautiful and mountains,” Haley added. Other differences include attitude. The variety of things to do and archi- tecture of some of the older buildings are also things Richard enjoyed about city life. Although Richard and Haley were both looking forward to returning home, they’d participate in the program again if they could. “It showed me where my values lie, do Big city meets resort town at St. Monica ✦ See Pickering, Page A5 ✦ See Annual, Page A2 Ta ke a break, Durham Tax cuts dominate first Harper budget By Jeff Hayward Staff Writer DURHAM — Ta x cuts were the name of the game in the federal budget brought down Tuesday afternoon by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty in Ottawa. The Conservative government lived up to its election promises and has slashed taxes in a number of ways including a one-per cent drop in the GST, as well as higher tax exemptions for small businesses and surtax elimi- nation for corpo- rations. In total, Mr. Flaherty, Whitby- Oshawa MP, an- nounced a total of 29 separate tax reductions, hitting on consumption taxes, business taxes, corporate taxes and other federal charges. What results is cuts across the board. Randy Hickey of BDO Dunwoody (Uxbridge), feels the budget is a positive one for average citizens. “There’s something in it for everyone,” said Mr. Hickey. “It’s absolutely (posi- tive) for lower incomes... a person (could save) up to $1,000 per year” based on the announced cuts. He said it’s possible people may hold off purchasing big ticket items until the GST cut comes into effect on July 1, but sees this as “temporary” and that a one per cent reduction won’t cause hesita- tion in day-to-day purchases at all. But Mr. Hickey warned that “(the gov- ernment) has to pay for it all somehow” and noted this budget announcement is likely only a prelude to a more detailed budget to come next year. ✦ See Budget, Page A4 Jim Flaherty He said using the Ministry of Natu- ral Resources’ natural hazards pol- icy, the lot should not be severed because it would put it on hazard- ous land, and the trail would be too. Using the most stringent criteria, Mr. Southwood said the limit should be 55 metres. “If the proposed building lot is approved and the waterfront trail is extended through the remaining 32.6-metre wide section, the trail w ill disappear into the lake in the not-too- distant future at the present rate of erosion,” Mr. Southwood said. “I care passionately about the trail and I would like to see it continue for many generations to come.” Michael Tanos, a geotechnical en- gineer, appeared on behalf of the TRC. In an interview following the hearing he said the residents were using information from the introduc- tion of the MNR planning document, which he said has been simplified, and the values cited for determining hazard lands can be used more “for preliminary purposes.” He said the hazard limit on the property is 17 metres and at the nar- rowest point the lot border would be 31 metres from the edge of the bluff. Based on the average rate of ero- sion, which during the hearing he said was 0.173 metres from 1971 to 2005, that buffer would be more than enough. “The average annual erosion rate is decreasing,” he said. He also told the hearing that based on tests done on soil samples in a nearby area in 1991, the type of soil is well-consoli- dated and dense. “It is very durable soil that would be resistant to erosion,” he said. The residents’ geotechnical engi- neer, Walter Gibson, said the area studied in 1991 is different than the area in question and calculated the average annual rate of erosion to be 0.32 metres. He said the slope is not stable. “I feel strongly that there is a very dynamic activity going on... My gut feeling, having studied many hun- dreds of slopes, leads me to believe this is an active area that is vulner- able to significant changes,” he said. Because of the information pro- vided by their expert, the residents’ believe allowing the severance of the lot for the purpose of building a home would be bad planning. Rosemarie Humphries, the TRC’s planning expert, disagreed. “It is zoned and designated to allow for a residential lot and that would be in keeping with the charac- ter of the community,” she said in an interview. Ms. Humphries said that the funds the TRC would receive from the sale of the lot would enable it to bring more land into public ownership. “The money they get from the sale (of the lot) will go back towards fur- ther acquisitions,” she said. To ronto staff came to the May 1 management forum meeting to speak to councillors and Pickering staff about the nine Toronto-owned sites being considered for a new source- separated organics site. Two of the locations are in Pickering and two abut it (one in Ajax and one in Scar- borough). Council previously forwarded its opposition to Toronto, but during Monday’s presentation the discussion started to get heated and emotional. “My stomach is turning so bad hearing this conversation,” said Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson, who represents the ward in which both Pickering sites are located. The sites are the former Brock North and Brock West landfill sites, which the community and council fought to close. Coun. Johnson asked Norm Lee, manager of operational planning in solid waste with the City of Toronto, if the staff who compiled the list were new to the department. “Do they not remember what hap- pened before in Pickering?” he asked. “They wouldn’t be writing a report recommending a site in Pickering if they remembered those days.” Coun. Johnson was there when Brock West (near Brock and Third Concession roads) was closed in 1996. A Pickering staff report said after that, the City of To ronto “agreed to ‘cease to re- ceive or dis- pose’” on that site. “They weren’t going to be used for any more waste for the City of Toronto,” Coun. Johnson said. Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dick- erson said with those legal agree- ments in place, “why would anyone consider moving on in Pickering? “We’re upsetting people needlessly and spending money needlessly.” Mr. Lee said he would go back and ask Toronto’s legal department to take a look at the agreements. “Our legal opinion, maybe it isn’t the exact same as yours,” he said, adding he believes the wording for Brock North is different from Brock West. “I would hope we would not be getting into 25 years of going back to court,” said chief administrative of- ficer Tom Quinn. To ronto staff were instructed to look at City-owned sites for the build- ing of a new source separated organ- ics (SSO) facility, where organic waste would be broken down and made into compost. Toronto currently pro- duces 110,000 tonnes of SSO year, but it can only process 25 per cent at its Dufferin-area facility. The initial criteria looked at for rec- ommending potential sites were that it had truck access, was not in a resi- dential area and must be a minimum of two hectares. None of the Toronto sites are large enough to handle all of the processes involved in making the compost. The staff report is to go to Toronto council this month. Mr. Lee said they are waiting for direction from coun- cil before doing any public consulta- tion. Pickering ready to battle Toronto over organics plans Rick Johnson Help line benefits from annual event DURHAM — The best way to help kids this month is one step at a time. The Bell Walk for Kids Help Phone hits the trail in Ajax’s Rotary Park on Sunday, May 7 at 11 a.m. Proceeds go to Kids Help Phone, a toll-free 24- hours-a-day line for kids across Can- ada to access counselling in situations of need. In 2005, the help line made 11,600 contacts in Durham Region through phone calls and over the web. The statistics are more than three times higher than the 2004 number for the region. The age of clients ranges from five to 20 years old. Since 2002, the walk has raised more then $2.4 million in Ontario and more than $6 million nationally. For more information about the walk, call the Ontario regional office at 416-586-5437. Make the call and walk for kids in need Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering ‘absolutely committed’ to obstetrics and pediatrics programs By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — A $3.5-million re- gional contribution to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital expan- sion is back on the books. Last Decem- ber, Durham council decided to withhold its pledge of $3.5 million to the hospital until it was satisfied with the services provided there. The move came after a hospital announcement that its obstetric and pediatric services were being transferred to the Rouge Valley Centenary site in Scarborough. The decision was later reversed. On April 19, a delegation includ- ing Dave Sinclair, chairman of the board of directors, and Hume Mar- tin, Rouge Valley president and chief executive officer, assured council the services in question would not be removed. “We are absolutely committed to community-level obstetrics and pe- diatrics,” Mr. Martin said. Council in a unanimous vote passed a motion to follow through on its $3.5-million commitment. Construction of the expansion is scheduled to begin in 2007 and Mr. Martin said the tender goes out in the next six months. “It took a great deal of work to move the capital project forward,” Mr. Sinclair said. In its recent budget, the provincial government reconfirmed the $60- million redevelopment was a go. “We are extremely pleased the pro- vincial government announced ap- proval for redevelopment,” Mr. Mar- tin said. Re g ion puts hospital pledge back on the table Hume Martin “This is to get everyone on the (Con- servative) side”, he said, but noted to make changes to pledges the party al- ready promised the last election, “would be political suicide.” He believes small businesses were treated fairly, as were corporations. “They (corporations) are people too,” he noted. “There’s a reason the govern- ment does this (tax cuts)... it’s to benefit everyone.” He noted that savings from corporations and smaller businesses could be passed along as savings to the consumer. In addition to the cuts, the Conserva- tives have boosted spending in a num- ber of areas. There will be $5.3 billion more for the military over the next five years, $5.5 billion for infrastructure im- provements, $5.5 billion to reduce wait times including a six per cent rise in health care transfers and investments in students, jobs and youth sports. There is also $1.4 billion to beef up policing and border security. Mr. Hickey said he was pleased to see investment in agriculture, with a promise of $1.5 billion in relief with $500 million to come as immediate aid to farmers. He noted Durham has a strong agricultural community that will be positively im- pacted. Something new for your Community I want the big metro, super-fast living or the small town -- I want the small town,” said Haley. “You really learn a lot about yourself when you do something like this.” Their Pickering hosts have also learned from the experience. “I didn’t know what to expect,” said Mason Milner, a Grade 7 student at St. Monica. “I thought they’d be really quiet, not talkative and shy,” said Robyn Gito, also in Grade 7. Both were surprised by the lack of groups in the Smithers school and how everyone talks to everyone. “No one there is judgemental,” said Mason. He said it’s taught him not to judge people. For the project, each school fundraised for the other school’s activity costs and the YMCA helped sponsor other expenses. All of St. Monica’s Grade 7 stu- dents also had the option of par- ticipating in the trips planned for the Smithers kids, even if they’re not doing the exchange them- selves. ✦ Pickering from page A1 Pickering students welcome guests, prepare for trip west Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo Richard Shanmugaveloo, left, Mason Milner, Robyn Gito and Haley Olson are four of the students participating in a YMCA Youth Exchange Program. PA GE A6 ◆ NEWS A DVERTISER ◆ MAY 3, 2006A/P F or the first and prob- ably the last time in their lives, my children were excited about going to the bank. They had just opened up their first savings accounts. A momentous occasion to be sure. They felt grown-up, worldly and brimming with anticipation of a riches-filled future. As they should. That’s what kids do best. I confess to a slightly less optimistic sentiment. All I could think of was, “Well, they’re on the radar screen now.” The system had them. Prior to getting a hold of that little plastic card and sign- ing those papers, they were as free as they were ever going to be in this world. They weren’t on anybody’s mailing list yet, they weren’t in any database of potential customers, they were just a couple of “tabula rasas,” so to speak. Oh sure, the government knew about them. They had health cards and birth certifi- cates and social security num- bers. They were by no means invisible to Big Brother. But still, those things are fairly be- nign. The government doesn’t call you at home to see if you want to support the newest budget. The ministry of health doesn’t cram your mailbox full of offers for better, platinum health cards. The birth cer- tificate registry doesn’t pester you to donate because you’re an alumnus. But, once you have money, once you ‘officially’ have money, the sharks begin to circle. And that debit card that my kids think is so incredibly cool might as well be a finan- cial chum bucket. The other, more worrisome, side of it is that from this point on, as they grow older and ac- quire more and more cards for this and that, they will be stud- ied and tracked and analyzed as though they were fugitives. Information is digital gold in this brave new world. With every swipe we are sending a very eager someone all kinds of data about who we are, where we are going, what we are doing when we get there and what time of day we are doing it. I had a glimpse into the machinations of the “data col- lection world” not long ago. One of my credit card compa- nies called me, out of the blue, and a very concerned voice said “Mr. Crone have you lost or replaced a credit card re- cently?” “No,” I replied warily. “Well, Mr. Crone, this is just a precautionary call, we’ve no- ticed that lately you’ve been purchasing more bottled water than usual.” “Well, I...” “And yet, when we cross- reference our database with your household water con- sumption, you don’t appear to be using the toilet any more than usual which leads us to the conclusion that you may be retaining water.” “Huh...” “I see also that you’ve pur- chased less music and more razor blades in the past month... this is a disturb- ing pattern Mr. Crone... Mr. Crone? Are you all right, Mr. Crone? Mr. Crone, if you’d like to talk to someone about the unhappiness in your life we have an excellent in-house psychiatrist who takes Interac. Mr. Crone there’s no need to feel despondent. A better life is only a swipe away.” “Swipe this.” Click. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his column. Harper’s first budget delivers on promises On Tuesday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper took the next step in his five-priority pledge to Canadians when he unveiled his first budget. The budget, delivered by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, makes good on strong Conservative promises to cut the GST by one per cent, to provide parents of children under the age of six with $100 per month for child care (both take effect July 1), to beef up spending on crime and the military and to provide the structure for a wait-times guarantee. Mr. Flaherty’s package of tax relief measures, in addition to the GST cut, include an increase to the basic personal amount to be claimed increasing to 655,000 people who would not pay income tax, a reduc- tion in the lowest tax rate to 15.5 per cent from 16 per cent, and a tax credit on employment income of up to $500 to increase to $1,000 on Jan. 1, 2007. There are also a bushel of tax cut plans for businesses including a cut in the general corporate income tax rate to 19 per cent from 21 per cent by 2010, elimination of the corporate surtax for all companies by Jan. 1, 2008 and the elimination of the federal capital tax as of Jan. 1, 2006. Small businesses can benefit by becoming eligible for the 12 per cent tax rate to $400,000 from $300,000 as of Jan. 1 with reductions to 11 per cent by 2009. There is increased spending as well. The military will get a $5.3-billion boost over five years, a reflection of the prime minister’s push to improve the Canadian Armed Forces. There is $161 million for 1,000 RCMP officers and federal prosecutors and pots of money to improve border security and crack down on crime. Families get a boost through the child-care monthly payment but that’s not all. There also is a tax credit provided for up to $500 in eligible fees for physical fitness programs for each child up to age 16. That means hockey moms and dads can claim for each child. And infrastructure gets some money as well as the feds will put $5.5 billion into a new Highways and Border Infrastructure fund and pro- vide a tax credit of 16 per cent for those who purchase monthly transit passes. There are also plans to put any surplus achieved annually directly toward debt reduction. That’s a change from past Liberal practice which saw surpluses broken down into spending and cutting debt. Under the Tory plan, our debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to drop 31 per cent by 2008 with predictions that it will fall to 25 per cent by 2014. While there may be much opposition to this budget, none of the three opposition parties is in a position to force an election over it. And if they did, the Prime Minister would be able to claim he is merely delivering on his campaign promises. This strong budget offers the proof. This Week’s Question: Given a choice of tax cut options, which do you prefer? One per cent GST cut Income tax cuts Mix of both Cast your vote online at infodurhamregion.com Last Week’s Question: Do you think we should keep our troops in Afghanistan? To tal votes: 604 No: 59.8 % No: 40.2 % LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Not acknowledging soldiers’s deaths upsetting To the editor: So, we aren’t going to ac- knowledge the deaths of four of our soldiers. We have approximately one-tenth the population of the U.S. and you can bet if the equivalent number of 40 U.S. personnel were killed in one day they’d howl. The current Conserva- tive government has quickly aligned its thinking with Big Brother and is showing all the signs of toeing the line on red, white and blue policies. I thought it might have taken a few more months for that. Our sons and daughters overseas deserve our sup- port no matter how we feel about them being there or the government that put them in that position. The people they leave behind also need our support, and now there are the families and friends of four more. If I had a flag it would be at half-staff until the final boy was laid to rest but then like a lot of people, what I feel doesn’t count. I suppose it’s more im- portant what the neighbours think. Marian Wild Oshawa Why toll expansion? To the editor: I have been following the letters written regarding the expansion of Hwy. 407 east and the desperate need we have for more east lanes com- ing from Toronto. I couldn’t agree more, yet I wish someone would explain to me why our only option is the expansion of a toll high- way. From what I understand, I am going to pay (through my taxes) for the develop- ment east of the 407 and then once it is here I am going to have to pay again (tolls, etc.) to drive it. If this is the case, I have to say I am most disturbed. Have we been issuing build- ing permits (and collecting the resulting taxes from these new residents) without a plan to handle the traffic that re- sults from this growth? Why are we not also focus- ing on the expansion/devel- opment of non-toll roadways into and out of our region? M.J. Maas Brooklin We need to take part in Afghanistan conflict To the editor: Have we become isolation- ists? I guess we should hide in our shell. Before the Second World Wa r, the U.S. was a land full of isolationist attitudes until Pearl Harbor. If the Japanese had not attacked the U.S., the landscape of Europe and the United Kingdom might look completely different today. Are we getting the compari- son yet? We are not as safe as I think a lot of people believe. We always have been a target just not as big as the U.S. Afghanistan is not about re- specting sovereign borders or it being a U.S. war. It’s about a massively more fortunate nation such as Canada step- ping up to the plate and being apart of the global commu- nity. How can we hold our head up and face the rest of the world and judge them if we turn off our platitudes the moment we step outside our borders. Does the pride of our con- victions lay only with our sol- diers? The street is home to veteran Cana- dian Football League defensive back Richard Karikari, of the Montreal Alou- ettes, and to the football-playing Glavic family, including Marko, Sasha and Erik, who’ve all starred on the high school and collegiate football scene. Now, there’s a new, budding CFLer who grew up in that neighbourhood: Ivan Birungi. The star wide receiver with the Aca- dia Axemen of the Atlantic University Football Conference (AUFC) was draft- ed by the Alouettes in the fourth round of the CFL draft, 32nd overall, making him the fifth wide receiver taken. The 22-year-old, a former mem- ber of the St. Mary Catholic Second- ary School Monarchs senior football team, was happy to be selected by the Alouettes, saying the team places a high value on Canadian receiv- ers, which have thrived within that program. “I was hon- oured and I ap- preciated it,” he says in a phone interview from Wolfville, N.S., where he was readying for a weeklong vacation to Cuba. “I felt very happy. I’ve worked hard during the season and the off-season to prove myself, so it’s good to get some recognition. I’m glad to have the opportunity to showcase my skills.” The 6-foot-3, 225-pound wideout says he talked to several CFL teams, including Hamilton, Montreal and Cal- gary at the CFL combines, a series of workouts by draft-eligible players for all league teams prior to the draft. While sitting around with friends at his home, waiting for the results of the draft, he had no idea where he might end up. He had an inkling he would go later in the draft, owing to the recent dispersal draft by the Ottawa Renegades, with several Ottawa receivers picked up by other CFL clubs. “My expectation was that I would get drafted. I thought maybe I would be going higher than I did but I wasn’t surprised I was picked that late because of the dispersal draft,” he says. Birungi says it’s great to have some- one from his hometown on the roster in Karikari, an AUFC alumnus of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men, who recently signed a contract to stay with Montreal. The Alouettes check into training camp May 15. Although he acknowl- edges it will be tough to crack the Mon- treal lineup as a receiver, Birungi says he’ll most likely start the season playing on special teams. Birungi finished the 2005 football sea- son -- his third with Acadia -- as a first- team all-Canadian all-star. He was also named Atlantic University Sport’s most valuable football player last season and was a Hec Crighton nominee as the top player in Canadian collegiate football. He broke Acadia’s all-time receiving yardage record, with 10 touchdowns and 792 yards this season. His career numbers of 1,379 yards and 22 touch- downs were compiled in 19 games. Bi- rungi’s also tied for fourth place in the AU FC in career touchdowns, only three away from the record. Birungi will finish his degree in politi- cal science at Acadia this year. Durham Dragons fired up about U.S. scholarships Ajax’s Anderson signs with Providence, Jasper at U. of Vermont By Al Rivett Sports Editor DURHAM — Two Durham Dragons Track and Field club athletes hope to make fast tracks stateside in Septem- ber when they embark on full, four- year athletic scholarships. Michael Anderson, 18, of Ajax, will attend Providence College in Provi- dence, Rhode Island, where he will run long distance and cross-coun- try for the Friars, which compete in NCAA Division 1 of the Big East Con- ference. Meanwhile, Kailey Jasper, 17, of Whitby, will run the 400 metres and 400m hurdles for the University of Vermont Catamounts of Burlington, Vermont. The Catamounts compete in the NCAA Division 1 America East Conference. Anderson, a Grade 12 student at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School and a three-year member of the Dragons, says there were a num- ber of reasons to choose Providence over other schools in the running: it’s a small school in a small town and the track and field team, by all accounts, is like a family. “I think I fit there,” says Anderson, who eschewed offers from the univer- sities of Minnesota, Oregon, Colum- bia and Florida State. “I’m sure I’ll do fine there. I wouldn’t be missing out (by not going to) Oregon or Minne- sota anyways.” Anderson is excited by the solid track and field program at Providence, led by head coach Ray Treacy and fea- turing a number of foreign students. “It’s a really good team and they get a lot of guys from Ireland and New Zealand, so there’s a lot of in- ternational team members. One guy finished 16th in the NCAAs in cross- country, so it’s a great program. Last year, there were three (American) Olympians on the team.” Jasper is also a three-year member of the Dragons and she chose Ver- mont over Kent State University in Ohio and Indiana State University. “It’s just a beautiful area and I like how close to home it is, only six hours away,” says the Grade 12 student at Anderson Collegiate in Whitby. “Their culture is just like ours, so it wouldn’t be so much of a shock going down there.” Ve r mont’s women’s track and field team, says Jasper, is at a higher pla- teau than the men’s program, which only started a few years ago. Anderson and Jasper say they both blossomed into top-tier athletes as members of the Oshawa-based Dur- ham Dragons club. They’re apprecia- tive of the efforts of head coach Dale Lapham. “Dale Lapham is a really good coach and it’s a small club, so it’s very personal and he works very hard and has dedicated lots of time and knowl- edge,” says Anderson. “He’s definitely developed me a lot,” added Jasper. “I don’t know where I’d be.” Anderson is coming off a solid 2005 outdoor season. He represented Can- ada at the World Youth Track and Field Championships in Marrakech, Mo- rocco last July, running in the 3,000m. He also represented the country at the North America, Central America and Caribbean Cross Country Champion- ships (NACAC) in Clermont, Flori- da last March. Last year, he ran the 1,500m in 3:55.7, which was ranked third in Canada for his age group. He also ran the 3,000m in 8:22.9, which was ranked second for his age group. In addition, he finished 10th at the 2005 Cross-Country Championships in B.C. This year, Anderson hopes to quali- fy for the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Beijing, China. He must, however, finish in the top 2 at the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships this summer or meet the time standard for the worlds in ei- ther the 5K or the 1,500 metres. Jasper is also hoping to run for Canada at the world juniors. Jasper, at the Ontario Legion Out- door Track and Field Championships in St. Catharines last July, earned gold in the 400m hurdles and silver in the 400m. Both are looking forward to the up- coming high school season, hoping to earn a medal at the Ontario Federa- tion of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships in Toronto next month. Last year, Anderson was fourth in the 1,500m and the 3,000m, while Jasper was sixth in the 400m. Anderson will study business at Providence, while Jasper will be in the physical education program at Ver- mont. Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo Kailey Jasper and Michael Anderson, members of the Durham Dragons Track and Field Club, will be competing for U.S. universities this fall — Jasper with the University of Vermont and Anderson with Providence College. It’s a response to an overwhelming desire and quest for answers to the unknown. “It doesn’t make sense to do things because we’re supposed to anymore,” says Blackman, 43. “You don’t rock the boat; it used to be that you didn’t sway beyond what society said to do. That’s all changing.” Change is exactly what the book is about. It’s designed as a manual for those wishing to per- form Wild Card Therapy, or learn more about it. The spiritual tools are described in the book and will eventually be available on the market as a deck of cards. “Wild cards are energy cards. Unlike Tarot cards, when you activate a wild card something happens,” Blackman says. “For example, the Ivory tower, which is depicted on the front of the book, helps reclaim your command centre.” The purpose of the cards is to “heal and cleanse,” and return to “your true, core self.” More than 300 wild cards exist, although only 65 are mentioned in the book. Pathfinder illustrat- ed all 300. While references are made to Christ and the Archangel Michael, Blackman insists that it’s “non-denominational and not part of a religion.” “It’s a way to empower people to self-heal, self-growth and dealing with emotions,” says Blackman. “If you can think of yourself as an energy level, things that are not truly your energy can have an affect on you.” She says “people are just seeing that things are just not working the way they are,” and, as a result, the authors discuss the process of cleans- ing by “removing that, which is not you, to leave behind that which is. “It’s powerful stuff,” says the mother of two. “If people have a determination and a hunger to be clean, whole and healthy, they can do it.” The two authors communicated online for half a decade before they finally met face to face this past March at their book release party. Blackman describes Pathfinder, as a “reclusive and very private individual” who lives in the U.S. Stay-at-home mom Blackman is originally from Oshawa but has lived in Ajax for 13 years. She says the book differs from the countless oth- ers on spirituality that are currently out there. “Some things weren’t making sense in the other books. A lot of stuff Aunt T said really hit home,” says Blackman. With the book making its way to bookstores over the next few months, she’s anxious to see what the public’s response will be. Free on-site Inspection/Quotations We also cater to the physically challenged Wa yne Hutchison brings to the replacement window and door business a new and long overdue feature. It’s a Mobile Showroom, which just may be the only one in Canada. “The days are gone when you carried some brochures and a sample window to a customer’s home,” explains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired North York Mobile Library truck and installed interior walls along with all of my window samples.” When you call Durham Windows and Doors for a free estimate, Wayne will show up at your door with his Mobile Showroom, which you’ll enter by way of a sliding patio door. Inside, displayed on the walls are the Vinyl Window Designs series of vinyl windows, which you’re free to operate and you’ll discover the many special features including how they can be cleaned without going outside. “After being in this business for 29 Durham Window and Doors bringsDurham Window and Doors brings Mobile Showroom to your doorMobile Showroom to your door years, I can honestly say these are the fi nest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All Vinyl Window Designs’ windows come with Low E Glass, which fi lters out the ultraviolet rays keeping your home cooler in the summer and eliminates fading of your curtains, drapes and furniture. All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hardware and glass. Wa yne would also like his customers to know that he does all of the estimates personally, eliminating the cost of a salesperson. Durham Windows and Doors also does all of its own installations, which ensures that every customer gets a high quality job done at the best possible price. Durham Windows and Doors is located at 696 King St. W. in Oshawa. For more information call 905-579-2222 or 1-888- 576-8575. P Four-part harmony in Ajax, with special guests Champion quartet part of lineup at Carruthers Creek Community Church AJAX — Durham Region’s Oshawa Barber- shop chapter welcomes special guests to its 57th annual show on May 6. All the way from St. Louis, Missouri, 2004 In- ternational Collegiate Quartet champions and 2005 International Quartet sixth-place finalists ‘Vocal Spectrum’ is making its first Canadian appearance. The Durham barbershop chapter is com- prised of singers from across the region, under the leadership of chorus director Stewart Pe- tersen and Owen Duncliffe, assistant chorus director, both of whom live in Pickering. Also appearing at ‘Youth In Harmony’ are the Coronation Public School choirs from Os- hawa, ‘Men in Vests’ and ‘Girls in Gold’, ‘4 Ever Friends’ and the ‘Horseless Carriagemen Cho- rus’. The Carriagemen will sing a variety of songs in four-part harmony, including tunes like ‘Under the Boardwalk’, ‘Dream Dream Dream’ by the Everly Brothers, and a spiritual number, and will be joined by Al Spence, whose quar- tet, the Chromatics, are also performing at the event. There will be a draw with proceeds going to Harmonize for Speech, the chapter’s service project, that supports children with hearing and speech impediments. Show times are 1:30 and 8 p.m. at Carruthers Creek Community Church, 599 Bayly St. E. Tickets are available at the door or may be reserved by calling Howard and Joan at 905- 623-7405.
