Whitby OPP said the man got out of his car on the left shoulder of the westbound lanes at Rouge- mount Drive around 7:45 p.m. to change a flat tire when he was struck by a passing vehicle. That vehicle was then struck by a trac- tor trailer, police said. The man who was hit by the car was taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre with seri- ous injuries while the driver of the car that struck him sustained minor injuries, police said. The westbound lanes of Hwy. 401 were closed for several hours while police investigated. Armed men rob Pickering shop PICKERING — Tw o men, one of them carrying a meat cleaver, robbed a Pickering lingerie shop Saturday afternoon, Durham Re- gional Police said. The suspects entered the La Senza shop on Brock Road North around 3 p.m. and demanded cash, police said. They fled after an employee handed over a small amount of cash. Police are looking for two white men, both of them de- scribed as standing about 5-feet- 6 with slight builds and short brown hair. One carried a meat cleaver while the other clutched a bar, police said. Police say a third suspect who drove a getaway vehicle may have been involved. Durham officers at biker massacre victim’s house looking for leads in Pickering case By Jeff Mitchell Staff Writer DURHAM — Durham homicide in- vestigators are once again searching the home of one of the victims of the weekend biker massacre as they con- tinue their investigation into a homi- cide here. Durham police have been at the Keswick home of slaying victim Jamie Flanz for the past couple of days, se- curing the Hattie Court house until a search warrant is obtained. Investiga- tors want to search the property once more for leads in the December 2005 beating death of Shawn Douse, whose body was discovered in a wooded area in rural Pickering, said homicide De- tective Sergeant Rolf Kleum. The house was searched earlier in the investigation, Det.-Sgt. Kleum said. “We have another interest in the property and that’s why we’re there,” he said Tuesday morning. “We’re pre- paring a search warrant and we’ll ex- ecute it, hopefully, later today.” Det.-Sgt. Kleum would not describe the 37-year-old Mr. Flanz, identified in media reports as an associate of the outlaw Bandidos motorcycle gang, as a suspect in the death of Mr. Douse, also of Keswick. But he said the property is of interest as the murder probe contin- ues. Police believe Mr. Douse’s beaten body was transported to rural Pickering and dumped in a wood lot in a field north of Concession 7, just east of the Yo rk-Durham Line. A man out walking his dog discovered the body Dec. 8, a couple of days after Mr. Douse, 35, and a father of two, went missing. At its April 3 meeting, council voted to endorse a letter from the Region call- ing on the new federal government to honour the federal-provincial child-care agreements. Two councillors were op- posed, but it passed with majority sup- port. “What do you say to those working parents or working moms that all of a sudden your spaces cease to exist?” asked Ward 1 Regional Councillor Mau- rice Brenner. He hopes some compromise can be found instead of the program being can- celled at the end of the year. Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dicker- son advocated strongly that the program is needed. He sent a message to Premier Dalton McGuinty and Prime Minister Stephen Harper, “not to scrap it for the sake of $1,200 a year because, frankly, it is taking away more than it is giving to those in need. “(Scrapping) it will have a significant and negative impact on families in Dur- ham and Pickering.” There was nearly $35 million allocated to Durham Region for 2005-2008 to cre- ate 770, new, licensed child-care spaces for children under six, but the Durham Pickering wants feds to keep child-care program Police search murdered man’s home Caught GO in Pickering DURHAM — A 15-year-old Oshawa girl was sexually assaulted early Sat- urday morning as she rode the GO train from Pickering to Union Sta- tion. In Ontario Court of Justice in Whitby on April 10, Hydro One pleaded guilty under the Ontario Water Resources Act to the charge of permitting the dis- charge of transformer fluid. In the agreed statement of facts read by Fred Maefs, counsel for the Ministry of the Environment, he said there were mitigating factors that resulted in the $60,000 fine, which could have been a maximum of $6 million. All but 500 litres of oil were recovered in the multi- million-dollar cleanup. “Hydro One’s remedial activities en- hanced the existing condition and ap- pearance of Pine Creek. Specifically, during the course of assessment and restoration activities, Hydro One be- came aware of significant waste ma- terials... Hydro One removed and dis- posed of these waste materials from Pine Creek, thereby enhancing this area for the enjoyment of all members of the community,” Mr. Maefs said. The charges stem from an explo- sion Oct. 1, 2003 at the Cherrywood Transformer Station, located near the Third Concession and Finch Avenue, of one of the transformers that con- tained 147,000 litres of mineral oil. The oil spilled out into the containment area, but some of it made it through an area where a portion of curb was missing. The curb had been removed in 1990 to bring in equipment, but it was never replaced. About 30,000 litres of oil leaked into Pine Creek, which feeds into Frenchman’s Bay. While Mayor Dave Ryan was pleased to see the issue come to a conclusion, he was sorry it ever happened. “We’re pleased Hydro One did, in fact, remediate (the creek),” he said. “It is important though to remember the spill was the result of their negligence in knowingly not fixing a curb for 13 years that was part of the required control for Hydro One fined $60,000 for Pickering spill ✦ See Teen, Page A2✦ See Councillors, Page A2 ✦ See Police, Page A5 ✦ See No, Page A2 Teen girl sexually assaulted on train 28 YEARS IN THE BUSINESS DON'T PAY 'TIL 2007 NO MONEY DOWN 0% INTEREST NO MONTHLY PAYMENTS! The 15-year-old Oshawa resident reported that at approximately 7 a.m. she was riding on the GO train from Pickering station to Union station when she was pulled into the wash- room by an unknown male and sexu- ally assaulted. The victim was forced to remain in the washroom with the male for approximately 2 hours. When the suspect got off the train at Guildwood Station she contacted a family member who then contacted police. The suspect is described as: male, 25, black, 6-foot-1, medium build, with a chinstrap beard which led into a goatee. He was wearing a red and black basketball jersey, jean jacket, blue jeans, white running shoes, black brimmed hat and black sunglasses. He was last seen exiting the GO train at Guildwood station. Vac- uum trucks were deployed, and booms and pads were used to absorb the oil. Both the Toronto and Region Conser- vation authority and also an indepen- dent environmental assessment com- missioned by Hydro One state there are no long-term impacts associated with the spill. Ju stice of the peace Dolly McCoi ac- cepted the plea and the recommended fine, commending Hydro One on its efforts. “You in fact made it nicer than it was previously. You went above and beyond the call of duty,” she said. “Residents should be pleased Hydro One went to the extra effort that they did.” Hydro One has 90 days to pay the fine, as well as a 25-per cent victim fine surcharge that will go to the municipal- ity. Councillors defend ‘plan for 100% of people with children’ Teen girl pulled into train washroom, and assaulted No long-term impacts on creek, say experts In 2004/05, 77.9 per cent of students pleased with their education By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer DURHAM — Durham Col- lege has regained its claim of having the most satisfied stu- dents in the Greater Toronto Area. According to Key Perfor- mance Indicators (KPI) re- leased by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Univer- sities, 77.9 per cent of Durham College’s 2004/05 students were ‘very satisfied’ with the education they received. “I think it’s fantastic,” said Leah Myers, college presi- dent. “I think it really reflects the fact everyone here is really focused on student success.” The year’s results put the college ahead of Humber Col- lege’s 76.6 per cent for very satisfied students. Last year, Humber beat Durham’s 75.5 per cent rate with its 76. “My guess is our plans were very effective this year,” said Judy Moretton, vice-president of academics. Each year, the school cre- ates an action team to address student concerns, she said. “I think our market in the GTA is one of the toughest; we have some very savvy stu- dents,” she said, and noted the expectations of those in the GTA are very high. The 77.9 per cent puts Durham at No. 12 out of 24 colleges in Ontario for stu- dent satisfaction. Niagara College is first with 86.4 per cent. The student satis- faction rate is tallied using the average of four key- stone questions in the survey. They question students on the skills and knowledge they received, the overall quality of their learning experience, the quality of facilities and re- sources, and the overall qual- ity of the college’s services. In the knowledge and skills portion, 87.2 per cent of Dur- ham students were very sat- isfied compared to 85.2 last year; quality in learning expe- rience received 79.5 per cent, down from last year’s 80.3; facilities and resources went up to 73.8 per cent from 69.1, and overall quality of services increased to 71 per cent from 67.3. Also included in the survey are graduate employment and satisfaction, employer satis- faction, and graduation rates. This year, the amount of employers very satisfied with Dur- ham graduates de- creased from 93.2 per cent to 91.3. “That’s one we’re going to look at clos- er,” said Ms. Moret- ton. She added there are some issues with employer participa- tion that could be impacting the results. Ontario Power Generation spokeswoman Jacquie Mc- Innes said the company is very pleased with the Durham graduates it has hired. “We have very specific re- quirements for our employ- ees,” said Ms. McInnes. Through partnerships with the post-secondary institu- tion, companies such as OPG are able to work with the col- lege to help tailor programs to provide “ready-made employ- ees”, she added. The co-op programs and internships offered also help Durham graduates be pre- pared and know what to ex- pect at OPG if the company decides to hire them, Ms. Mc- Innes said. Across the GTA in the em- ployer satisfaction rate, Sen- eca scored 93.8 per cent, Sher- idan was 92.1, Humber was 92.2, Centennial was 91.4 and George Brown was 89. From Durham, 93.1 per cent of students found jobs within six months of graduation, but the number does not indicate if they are related to their field of study. Ms. Moretton said more specific details from the survey will be coming out over the next month. For graduation information, Durham had 67.9 per cent of its students graduate, up from 64.4 last year, and 79 per cent of graduates were very satis- fied. Sheridan had 70.6 per cent graduate and Seneca had the lowest in the GTA with 53.4. Ahead of Durham in the GTA for graduate satisfaction were Centennial College at 79.6 per cent, Humber with 82.5, and Seneca and Sheri- dan with 80.1. Ms. Myers said the gradua- tion numbers are something all colleges can continue to improve upon. This means the average homeown- er will see an increase in the area of $68 on the regional portion of their tax bill. However, the transit budget, which has not yet been presented to the Region’s finance and administration committee, is expected to be $24.9 million and has not been factored into the tax increase. But, at Tuesday’s meeting of the committee, regional Chairman Roger Anderson was quick to point out that w ithout provincial downloading Durham would be handing down a four-per cent decrease this year. The Region pays $77 million into the provincial 2006 GTA pool. “We never had a reconciliation of where we get that money back,” fi- nance commissioner Jim Clapp said. Through various programs in so- cial assistance and social housing the Province gives Durham in the area of $62 million. The Region never recovers the dif- ference of around $15 million, said Mr. Anderson. “We could be reducing tax by four per cent,” he said. F ollowing a round of re- ductions at the committee level, Mr. Clapp on Tuesday presented an updated budget to finance and administration. The region- al expenditures for 2006, including transit are estimated at $922 mil- lion, 13 per cent of which goes to- ward sewers, nine per cent water, six per cent transit, four per cent waste management and 68 per cent general purpose. Of that $922 million, $715 million comes from property taxes, provin- cial subsidies, revenues, user fees and reserves. The largest piece of the general purpose pie goes to social services at 32 per cent, followed by police ser- vices at 17. The 3.94 per cent increase was achieved only after $1.42 million in cuts to conservation authorities, 150,000 in cuts to police services, and $300,000 in cuts to works. Also deleted from the proposed budget were monies for electronic agendas, international marketing and home- lessness appropriation. All those areas combined repre- sented 0.65 per cent being shaved off the tax impact. Another cost savings, $1.7 million, has come since moving into the newly constructed regional headquarters in Whitby. The proposed budget includes 30 new police officers, 65 new long- term care beds, 400 new day-care spaces and a new emergency medi- cal services station in Courtice. As well, Durham will put nearly $50 million into the regional roads program. Homicide Detective Leon Lynch showed reporters a picture of one clue retrieved in December: a light blue ball cap bearing the words Calla- way Golf. It’s believed the cap may have been dropped by one of the people who brought Mr. Douse’s body to the site, he said. Durham’s return visit to the house in Keswick is a periph- eral element to a story that has rocked Ontario. Mr. Flanz was among eight people discovered shot dead and stuffed into cars on a rural road near St. Thomas on the weekend. Police allege the murders were part of a bloody settling of scores among mem- bers of the Bandidos gang. An- other victim, 30-year-old Paul Sinopoli, lived near Mr. Flanz in Sutton. Police in Durham have made no connection between the massacre and the death of Mr. Douse. Speaking to reporters a cou- ple of weeks ago Det. Lynch said Mr. Douse was known to police, but that investigators were not specifically targeting bikers as the case developed. “We’re looking into (Mr. Douse’s) friends and contacts,” he said. ✦ Police from page A1 Police continue to search for clues in Keswick man’s death Just one more way to get your news thanks to the PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER newsdurhamregion.com Asking Region to look at decision to cut additional medical officer By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — Ajax and Brock are encouraging Durham to reconsider the hiring of a sec- ond associate medical officer of health for the region. Durham AMOH, Dr. Donna Reynolds, recently resigned her post citing, among other rea- sons, the elimination of a pro- posed second AMOH position and questioning the state of pub- lic health in the region. Ajax and Brock have both passed motions asking that the decision be re- considered. A memorandum from Dur- ham medical officer of health, Dr. Robert Kyle, to the health and social services committee, pre- sented April 5, indicated the pro- posed 2006 health department budget was reduced by $645,476 to $11.7 million, a 12-per cent reduction from 2005. The proposed AMOH position had no impact on the reduced budget, as it was to receive 100- per cent funding from the Prov- ince. The funds were used for programs. Whitby Councillor Pat Perkins, chairwoman of the Durham health and social service com- mittee, explained the AMOH was cut because of fears the Province would stop funding the position in a few years and the Region would be stuck with the bill. “The funding was through en- hancement funding,” Coun. Per- kins said. “There was no guaran- tee how long that funding would be there.” An AMOH is required to assist the medical officer with medical leadership, management sup- port, direction, planning, deliv- ery, monitoring and evaluation of infectious diseases programs and services. The AMOH also investigates infectious diseases and provides medical authority and issues medical directives to community and public health nurses to perform certain clinical duties, provide medical advice to and responding to inquiries from physicians and other health professionals, and provide medi- cal coverage after hours and on weekends. Larry O’Connor, vice-chair- man of the health and social services committee and past- president of the as- sociation of Local Public Health Agen- cies, said he feels the duties are too much for one person, espe- cially considering the tremendous growth in the region’s popu- lation since the first AMOH was added in 1994. “The request has been made for the past two years because the need is there,” Coun. O’Connor said. “I don’t think you hear pro- fessionals asking for help if they don’t need it.” Other new positions cut from the budget were one full-time administrative staff, a public health inspector and two full- time community health nurses. Coun. O’Connor said by cut- ting positions they continue to put Durham at risk of not meet- ing the minimum standards set by the Province. “C ertainly this year there was a request for added staffing,” Coun. O’Connor said. “The number of cuts that were made were not investigated enough to see if they would help with our compliance on mandatory programs.” On March 16 the committee received an annual report on standards that are not imple- mented in the region. It included 15 items not implemented and 49 items where the standards are not fully implemented. “We don’t look at the budget by way of impact to programs and how we will meet public health needs in Durham Region,” Coun. O’Connor said. “And that is the way we need to look at it.” Durham is not alone in fac- ing challenges in public health, Coun. O’Connor said. Sheela Basrur, chief medical officer of health for Ontario, in 2005 ta- bled a report that highlighted the number of long-term vacancies in the public health field across the province, Coun. O’Connor said. In a look at compa- rable areas in Ontario, Durham does not ap- pear to be out of line in terms of staffing. Hamilton City has a chief medical officer of health (MOH) and two AMOHs to serve a population of 503,000. Peel, with a popula- tion of 1.1 million, has two AMOHs and a MOH, who recently resigned. In York, the region’s 925,000 residents are served by one MOH (acting) and their one AMOH position is va- cant. Coun. Perkins said Durham often takes the lead in areas of public health. “We do over and above what it mandated by the Province,” she said. “They get a lot more money in our region than they do in oth- ers, I would say.” She added the Region has been involved in many public health initiatives, which others have followed, citing Durham’s work on the West Nile virus as an example. “It never has been the goal in the region to under-fund public health,” she said. “And we are proud of what our people do. “O n a go-forward basis this budget it really has allowed Dr. Ky le to expand.” Included in the budget are new health inspectors, new pub- lic health nurses, a new sexual health clinic in Port Perry and more. Two municipalities want doctor’s position reconsidered Larry O’Connor PA GE A6 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ APRIL 12, 2006A/P I ’m not the first person to note the cruel irony that as humans get older we start to look more and more like we did when we first came into this world. We lose our hair, we get chubby and wrinkly, we have a hard time walking. In cer- tain cases we become as myo- pic as newborns, barely able to focus on things more than a few inches from our noses. Some of us even wind up wearing diapers again. Not much fun. Ye t all of this would be so much more tolerable if, as we were physically morphing back into toddlers, we were also given back the magical mindset of a child. Wouldn’t it be nice, after years of looking out at the world through the jaded eyes of an adult, to suddenly fall back in love with the wonder of it all through the sparkling peepers of a newborn? Granted, going over to Grampa’s house and finding him lying on his back, gur- gling and happily playing with his toes might take a little ad- justment. But it’s one I would joyfully make if I believed my Mom or Dad was really and truly having a ball inside that 90- year-old body. And anyway, isn’t that a much nicer sce- nario than having him staring hopelessly at a wall in some overcrowded, understaffed rest home? I wish it were that way and I have to believe, in my heart of hearts, that it still can be that way. I’m not, of course, talk- ing about aging into a cooing, helpless if happy lump. But, of hanging onto that wonder, or at least re-discov- ering it. Part of the difficulty has to do with how the rest of us treat the aged. There doesn’t seem to be as much “rever- ence” around as there used to be. I may be blowing smoke here, but it seems like in the old days our elders were treated with more respect. They were considered “sages,” keepers of ritual and tradi- tional wisdom. They played an integral part in what were often life and death decisions. Seriously, I’ve watched a lot of westerns and I’ve never ever seen Apache elders being shipped off to a seniors tee- pee. My point is that if you tell someone often enough that they’re no longer useful, pret- ty soon they’ll start to believe it. Conversely, if you accord them respect and dignity and listen to and value their input, pretty soon they start dispens- ing real wisdom. I believe that. I’ve long been an advocate of the power of the human spirit to literally create the world we experience. We do it. We are Dorothy’s “man behind the curtain,” thinking into existence the wonders and horrors of this Oz we live in. No one and nothing else is responsible for what shows up in our lives, our societies, our cultures. If our lives become like pyr- amids, getting narrower and narrower as we age, then we have made them so. If our seniors and aged have given up hope, appear use- less, outdated and burden- some, it is because we have told them they are, again and again and again in a thousand different and pointed ways. Should I be given the gift of growing old, I should like to do so in grace and wonder. I can take the first steps to insuring that by revering and listening to my elders today. Doctors’s outgoing prescription has merit A second associate medical officer needed to keep pace with Durham’s growth While nobody in this world is truly irreplaceable, the loss of Dr. Donna Reynolds as associate medical officer of health for Durham Region is regrettable. In her eight years with the Region’s health department, Dr. Reynolds was the point woman for a vast array of health issues. Her role was especially notable during the severe acute respi- ratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in the spring and summer of 2003. Dr. Reynolds was herself quarantined for eight days during the SARS crisis. She was the health department’s medical lead in managing and minimizing communicable and infectious dis- eases. She was also heavily involved in working on West Nile virus and other health problems and was a prominent voice in the media relaying information to the public. But Dr. Reynolds is now leaving the health department, having taken a research position with a private Toronto firm. The good doctor had some words of advice on leaving, offering a prescrip- tion for future Durham public health needs. She indicated the Region’s growth indicates a second associate medical officer of health (AMOH) is needed to cope with the vol- ume of work involved. And, with eight years experience as AMOH in Durham, the widely respected doctor should know. The Region’s health and social services decided to turn down such an option, even though the position would have been fully funded by the Province. The fear was the funding would not be sustained and the Region would be stuck with the bill. However, one would think, based on Durham’s projected growth, expanding tax revenues would fill the funding gap for a second AMOH within a handful of years. And with concerns about the possible influx of avian flu and the enormous strain it could work on public health in the decade to come, the Region may need all the senior health executive direc- tion it can reasonably get its hands on. It may be too late this year to reconsider hiring a second AMOH — the Region has to first replace Dr. Reynolds — but serious thought should be given to hiring a second AMOH to keep pace with growth and to handle the growing infectious disease chal- lenges of the 21st century. John Cousins states the only violence to be prevented regarding the ban on toy guns is from a trigger-happy po- lice officer shooting someone with a toy gun, thinking it was a real gun. Has Mr. Cousins ever had to chase someone on a dark night and in a split second de- cide if it was a real or toy gun being pointed at him? Does he expect our police officers to stop and ask ‘hey, is that thing real?’ No officer wants to shoot anyone if they can prevent it. Also, we are not talking about eight- or nine-year-olds playing on their front lawn with a toy gun. We’re talking about people who use repli- cas to commit a crime. I heard on the news the other day that a car was stopped and a toy replica found in the glove compartment. Obviously, this gun was not going to be used as a toy. Mr. Cousins also states po- lice need training that will lessen the chance of them shooting innocent people, such as kids with guns. What exactly is his definition of a “kid”. I say that the “kids” using toy replica guns need to be educated -- use them for illegal purposes and you may be shot. Believe me, all the officers want to do is go home after their 10-hour shift and be with their families. My son is a police officer and I certainly would not want to walk in his shoes on a day-to-day basis. Perhaps it is time to put some of the onus on the man- ufacturers of guns not to pro- duce look alikes. I think that it is about time the public got behind our of- ficers and supported them instead of always bashing them. Heidi Groff Pickering Let’s take second look at Afghanistan To the editor: Recently, a man named Abdul Rahman was brought before a court of law and charged with a serious crime. It’s so serious the judge is now pondering whether to have him put to death. What did Mr. Rahman do to deserve this fate? Murder? Rape? Nope -- he had the effron- tery to change his religion from Muslim to Christian. This case would be trou- bling enough if the country weren’t Afghanistan, a nation kept afloat by the tax dollars of Canadians. After 25 years of war, Af- ghanistan is essentially bank- rupt. It has no industry, little infrastructure and is support- ed by foreign aid. Through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), we’re pour- ing in a total of $650 million over eight years, plus the mil- lions we’re spending on our continuing military and dip- lomatic presence. That’s not exactly chump change, but like most Cana- dians, I’m willing to help turn Afghanistan into a country which respects basic human rights. With the Rahman case, it appears that’s not what’s hap- pening. We need to re-examine our financial assistance to Af- ghanistan. If we’re funding a govern- ment which executes people for their religious beliefs, I say let’s shut the purse until it stops. On March 31, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced Durham would be receiving an additional $2.3 mil- lion in funding for EMS. This initial instalment is part of the Province’s pledge in February to invest $300 million over three years to move towards 50/50 sharing of the cost of municipal land ambulance services. “We are pleased that the pre- mier and the minister of health have come forward to honour the commitment of a previous government,” Rick Armstrong said. Mr. Armstrong said this con- tribution brings the provincial portion of EMS land ambulance service to around 40 per cent. The money could possibly re- duce this year’s potential tax in- crease by one half of a per cent on the municipal tax base, Mr. Armstrong said. “We are now below what the expenditures were for last year,” Mr. Armstrong said. “Our costs haven’t decreased at all, but the Region’s portion of that has gone down.” A true 50-50 cost sharing ar- rangement between the Region and the Province could save Durham $4.5 million annually when fully implemented. Tyler Robinson, of Ajax, and Pick- ering’s Brendan Charnley helped the East Enders to a 7-5 victory over the host Vaughan Panthers at the OHF, which drew together all the top midget ‘A A’ t eams from the various pro- vincial hockey organizations. Charnley, a forward, re- corded an assist in the final. Represent- ing the Greater To r onto Hockey League, the East Enders finished round-robin play in a three-way tie for first place with a 3-1 record. The Toronto squad was assigned to third place, how- ever, when goal differential was taken into account. In the semifinal against the Stratford Cullitons, the Ticats responded with an 8-2 victory. Charnley scored a goal and added an assist; Robinson gleaned an assist. The East Enders started play with a 7-2 win over the Tecumseh Eagles. Rob- inson registered a goal, while Charnley added an assist. In Game 2, the East Enders edged the Hearst Elans 3-2. Charnley contrib- uted a goal. The Toronto East Enders gained en- trance to the OHF championships after winning the GTHL title April 1 with a 6-1 victory over the Mississauga Terriers. Charnley, a Dunbarton High student, and Robinson, who attends J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate, have played in the East Enders’ organization for the past four seasons. Ajax juveniles knocked out in OHF semifinal AJAX — The Ajax Knights juvenile ‘A A’ rep hockey team was surprised by the Humberview Huskies in the semifinal game of the Ontario Hockey Federation Juvenile ‘AA’ Championships in Scarborough. The Huskies, after finishing fourth in round-robin play with a 1-2-1 mark, upset the Knights 4-2 at the Scarbor- ough Arena Gardens on Sunday. The Ajacians had finished atop the five- team standings with a 3-1 mark. Steve Crosty and Travis Livingstone scored for the Knights. Sean Mensour and Steve Muise added two assists apiece. The Knights started the OHF play- downs Saturday against Humberview, from the Greater Toronto Hockey League. Ajax scored an 8-4 win. Muise led the way with two goals, while Ste- ven-Ross Budai, Jesse Gerkes, Sam Guzzo, Josh O’Dea, Tyler Ritchie and Sean Mensour added singles. In Game 2 on Friday, the Knights scored a 5-4 victory over the host Scarborough Young Bruins. Gerkes, Mensour, Muise, Willy Neadles and Steve Pagana scored. In Game 3 on Saturday, the Knights were nipped 3-2 by the Windsor Ju- nior Spitfires. Livingstone and O’Dea scored. The Knights finished round-robin play later the same day by dethroning the Leaside Kings 6-3. Muise and Kyle Ta te notched two goals apiece; Pagana and Ritchie added one each. Leaside was the eventual cham- pion, defeating Humberview 4-3 in the f inal. Brendan Charnley Tyler Robinson ‘Dreaming of a Cruise’ at Pickering Recreation Complex’s Delaney rink on Saturday, with shows at 1 and 7 p.m. By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — Wo rking on de- tails big and small since last fall for the Skate Canada Pickering Skating Club’s biannual ice show, Catherine Powell looks forward to seeing the fruits of her labour this weekend. The volunteer show chairman, she was entrusted with putting together ‘Dreaming of a Cruise’ for this Sat- urday, April 15 at the Pickering Rec- reation Complex’s Delaney ice pad. Shows are at 1 and 7 p.m. This year’s ice extravaganza prom- ises to take audiences through a trav- elogue of exotic locales, all set to music and involving more than 200 local skaters and several guest par- ticipants. “It’s a major undertaking,” says Powell. “That’s why they only hold it every second year, there’s so much work involved.” The show, as the title suggests, follows a little girl who falls asleep and dreams of a cruise. From there, the dream sets sail to Africa, Spain, Greece and on an island-hopping adventure. Among the guest performers is Meaghan Duhamel, who’s currently ranked fourth in the Canadian senior ladies’ free skate. As well, Pickering club member Jordan Hockley and partner Kelly Ol- iviera, who placed first at the Skate Canada Junior Nationals in juvenile dance, will also perform. Marc Andre Servant and Joanna Salvagna will also be among the guest skaters. They were eighth in juvenile dance at the Skate Canada Junior Nationals. Tickets are $15 for adults or $5 for children under age 12. Tickets are available at the door. Pickering Skating Club sets sail for annual ice showcase More mat gold for Ajax’s Rabjohn Claims national juvenile title in Edmonton By Al Rivett Sports Editor AJAX — Gold and Paul Rabjohn have become synonymous this year. The Ajax wrestler captured his second consecutive national wrestling title at the Canadian Juvenile Wrestling Cham- pionships in Edmonton on Saturday. Moreover, the national title was one of a string of golden performances for Rabjohn this year, including victories at the provincial juvenile and the provin- cial high school championships. Competing for the Ajax-based Team Impact Wrestling Club in the 69-ki- logram weight class against 40 other under-19 wrestlers from across the na- tion, Rabjohn, at 5-foot-7, squared off against 6-foot-2 Micah Brakefield of Reynolds, B.C. in the gold-medal final. Rabjohn responded by not surren- dering a single point, taking the first round 5-0 and the second round 1-0. Far from intimidated by his much taller opponent, Rabjohn says his focus was purely on dictating the match. “He was much taller and lankier than me; I knew I had my work cut out for me. But, I stuck to my game plan and worked the way I wanted to,” says Rab- john, 17. The 17-year-old won gold in the 69kg weight class at the 2005 Canadian Cadet Wrestling Championships in St. John’s, Nfld. and was well-prepared for this year’s nationals. “I had a lot of confidence going in, so I was looking forward to making a good season even better,” he says. The 2006 wrestling season has been nothing if not perfect for the Grade 11 student at Ajax High School. At the On- tario Juvenile Wrestling Championships at the Six Nations Reserve in February, Rabjohn finished as the gold medallist in the 69kg division. On the high school scene, Rabjohn represented Ajax High at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associa- tions (OFSAA) Wrestling Champion- ships in Sarnia last month. Wrestling in the 72kg class against 32 others, Rab- john won five matches, including a vic- tory over top-seeded Matt Parsons from Orillia District Collegiate Vocational Institute in the final, to sew up his first- ever provincial high school crown. Rabjohn’s national gold in Edmon- ton helped Team Impact finished in a second-place tie with the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club in the team standings. The club’s 30 points were two behind the first-place Junior Hus- kies. But, Durham power trio Social Cyanide was forced to take an unexpected detour away from music last summer when drum- mer Steve Puddick of Whitby w as diagnosed with cancer. With Puddick now cancer-free, the band’s May 18 concert at the Motions nightclub in Oshawa is its first live show since then. “We went through a lot of bad times; we went through a lot,” says guitarist-vocalist Erik Christensen of Pickering. “I thought for quite a long time that was it, and the band will never be coming back, because it was a scary experience.” Christensen says those dark days will probably affect the band’s material. He says Social Cyanide has in the past written and played songs that comment on social issues and, according to the band’s website, the “poisons of society and life.” Future tracks will likely look inwards and be more personal, angrier. With Christensen and bass- ist Les Bain from Pickering al- ready a unit, having been play- ing together for a year or so, Puddick rounded out the band when he and Christensen found each other on the Internet. The latter had been writing songs for a year after leaving another band. Social Cyanide’s influences are based in 1990s hard-alter- native rock, the Seattle grunge of Nirvana, Sound Garden and Queens of the Stone Age. But that doesn’t mean the unit fits a mould. “It’s definitely an original band,” Christensen says. “Peo- ple who’ve heard us like us because it’s not like anything they’ve ever heard.” The band has played The Dungeon in Oshawa and The Opera House and Funhaus in Toronto. Christensen says the band is planning a summer tour, hop- ing to hit Peterborough, Ottawa and Montreal. It all gets un- derway with the May 18 show that marks two comebacks: the band’s and Puddick’s, and could have a triumphant-type vibe to it. “To know that you can actu- ally have cancer and beat it,” Christensen says, “I think for him, it will be a big step for him to get up and play.” The May 18, all-ages show also features Durham bands Xe- phyr and Empty Chamber. Mo- tions is at 394 Simcoe St. S. The doors open at 8 p.m. and tickets are $7 or $5 in advance. To buy advance tickets, contact Social Cyanide management at 289- 314-6830. There will be raffles and give- aways at the show. Social Cyanide’s six-song EP, ‘Buzz’, is available at Déjà vu Disc outlets in Durham Region. Visit www.socialcyanide.com to learn more about the band. To hear a sample of the band’s music, visit their website at www.myspace.com/socialcya- nide. Fundraiser pure magic for Dunbarton students PICKERING — A Dunbarton High School club is working to make money magically appear. The Dunbarton Magic Club is hold- ing a fundraising show Thursday, April 13, at 7 p.m. in the school’s theatre, with tickets $5 each. “Not too many of these happen in high schools,” said teacher Rob Evans, a professional magician who runs the school club. Members of Dunbarton’s Magic Club went to a magic convention in Ohio this February, which got them ex- cited about trying their tricks. Money raised will help create a magic library with how-to books and DVDs. Featured in the show are students Colin Leighton, Matt Richardson and Daniel Simmonds, as well as Mr. Evans and his wife Pat, who present the Evans and Evans show they perform professionally. “Colin is going to be doing a little bit of comedy magic,” said Mr. Evans. “Matt is going to be doing magic to music.” Daniel is doing manipulation magic, featuring original and creative tricks many seasoned magicians may not have likely seen, said Mr. Evans. The show is 90 minutes long and will also be performed for students at 1:15 p.m. on April 13. The money raised will be split with Dunbarton’s leader- ship class, which handled in-school marketing. Call the school to reserve tickets at 905-839-1125. Pickering students’ work on display through April 16 DURHAM — For Art’s Sake contin- ues at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa until April 16.
