The Grade 12 Dunbarton High School student is heading to uni- versity in the fall and he’ll be paying just a little more for his first year than those who came before him after the provincial government an- nounced Wednesday tuition will be allowed to increase by an average of five per cent. The Province reports the aver- age tuition increase will be $200 for almost 70 per cent of university stu- dents and $100 for 90 per cent of college students. “It isn’t a lot of money, but it adds up if you’re living in residence and with textbooks,” Justin said. Thomas Coughlan, president of the student association at Durham College and the University of On- tario Institute of Technology, wasn’t surprised by the announcement. “When the tuition freeze was lifted a lot of us were expecting an increase, we just didn’t know what it would be,” he said. He was glad to see it come in at five per cent; he feared it might be higher in order to make up for the two years of no increases. Mr. Coughlan said any time stu- dents’ fees rise they’re disappointed, but he acknowledged the average increase isn’t that much. “Paying $100 more is worth it compared with what we’re getting in return,” he said. It is the post-secondary institu- tions that set the actual increase, with the government allowing them PANTHER READY TO POUNCE Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Members of the Pickering Panthers ‘AA’ major atom hockey club took their act outdoors last weekend, joining their parents for a practice on the frozen pond at Finch Avenue and Altona Road. Defi- cit-financing is not sustainable with your own finances... why should government be any different than we all have to be in our own lives?” he said to an audience of local poli- ticians and members of the business community. Although no date was set for de- livery of this year’s budget, Mr. Fla- herty said the government will limit future growth on federal grant and contribution programs, and within federal departments and agencies, to the rate of inflation plus popula- tion growth. Taxpayer dollars will only be spent on programs that are “effective and efficient -- on pro- grams that work for Canadians,” he said. “When I was in the provincial Conservative party, we used to say that the problem wasn’t that rev- enues were too low, but that spend- ing was too high. We need to ensure that when we spend taxpayers’ dol- lars, we get results and you get good value.” Mr. Flaherty also said the govern- ment will move to reduce corporate taxes, and follow up on its prom- ise to eliminate federal capital tax and lower taxes for small business, including implementing tax incen- tives for businesses to hire new ap- prentices for industries in need. With an estimated $23-billion gap between the federal and provincial governments, Mr. Flaherty said he is meeting with the Ontario minister of finance on Friday to begin discussions to cor- rect the issue of fiscal imbalance. Of all the provinces and territories, only Ontario and Prince Edward Island are in a deficit situation, he said. Mr. Flaherty said the government will also begin by delivering on its election platform: it will pass the Federal Accountability Act; reduce the GST by one per cent; introduce mandatory sentences for gun-re- lated crimes; provide a $1,200 child- care allowance, and work with the provinces to establish a Patient Wait Times Guarantee for health care. “We can’t do everything at once; we simply don’t have the resources,” he said. “In January, Canadians gave us a mandate to lead change, and you can’t have responsible leadership without making prudent, respon- sible choices... and I can assure you we won’t. Our plan is both prudent and affordable.” Mr. Flaherty is expected to deliver his budget in late spring. The speech from the throne is Monday, April 3. Flaherty will be ‘responsible’ with first budget At a lunch in Whitby Thursday, federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty dis- cussed his Conservative government’s priorities as it heads into its first budget this spring. Just click here Facility is in ‘disrepair’ By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer DURHAM — Good news for some has others stepping forward to say, ‘don’t forget about us.’ During a public meeting Wednesday to gather input on the interim accommodation plan proposed by the Dur- ham District School Board, no one spoke out against two projects. They did, however, remind trustees that other schools also need attention. The interim plan, to be de- bated at the March 20 board meeting, calls for a new high school in the Taunton and Harmony roads area of Os- hawa and a large addition to Pickering High School in Ajax. Christine Radford, repre- senting parents of Norman G. Powers Public School in north Oshawa, encouraged the trustees to proceed with the new Oshawa high school, noting there are more than 560 secondary school stu- dents living north of Taunton who attend either Eastdale Collegiate or O’Neill Colle- giate. The number is project- ed to rise to about 1,100 by 2009. “Growth will sustain a high school at this location. Thank you for listening to us and thank you for listening to staff,” Ms. Radford stated. The interim plan only deals with secondary schools. The school board is waiting for the Education Ministry to complete a funding model for elementary schools be- fore decisions can be made. The new Oshawa high school will cost about $29 million and accommodate about 1,200 students. It’s slat- ed to open in 2008. The addition at Pickering High includes 26 classrooms, a cafeteria, library and gym- nasium, and it carries a $20- million price tag. The addi- tion will be phased in over two years. Richard Boire spoke for Frenchman’s Bay Public School in Pickering. “Our school attempted to attain funding without much funding coming our way. Our school is in disrepair and needs funding and needs funding soon,” he said. The school was built in 1965 to serve a fraction of the students now attending there, he added. “Our school, in terms of space, is clearly inferior to some of the other schools in the area,” Mr. Boire stated. “The facility is becoming out- dated. The facility and infra- structure are old and need to be updated and taken care of. I personally invite all of you to come out to our school and take a look. After the March break, I’ll send you a letter to come visit our school.” Whitby Trustee John Dol- stra noted the Province set a one-year moratorium on elementary funding and “it’s more than one year and we’re still waiting. We don’t know (when the funding model will be announced) and I don’t think they know.” to increase fees by a maxi- mum average of up to five per cent. Professional and gradu- ate programs may increase by up to eight per cent. Gary Polonsky, Durham College and UOIT president, said the board of governors will make the decision for in- dividual programs, probably at the next meet- ing in April. He believes the government’s an- nouncement is positive for edu- cation in Ontario. “I think the minister has done a brilliant job on this. The issue for our students isn’t whether they pay an extra $80 or $90 a month, the issue is access and qual- ity,” he said. “We will be able to make more quality improvements with this.” He said costs at the two institutions have risen an av- erage of five per cent in the past few years. What all sides point out as positive about Wednesday’s announcement were chang- es to government grants that will make it easier for stu- dents from lower- and mid- dle-income families to be able to fund a post-second- ary education. Access grants will now be available to more students as the eli- gibility has been in- creased to include those students from families earn- ing up to about $75,000. Previously, those grants were only available to lower-income stu- dents with family incomes of about $40,000. Justin thinks this is a good step as many stu- dents have to pay for school themselves and it is diffi- cult to work enough to earn the money to go to school while maintaining the grades needed to get in. The minister told an auto parts conference crowd this past Wednesday that the planned elimination of Car Plant No. 2 in 2008 is, in his words, “not a done deal.” He added, “I think I’m pretty confident we’ll get something out of that.” Mr. Cordiano’s comments come in the wake of a tough month of negotiations between the parent company and Local 222 union representatives. An agreement in principle that would result in concessions by the union to make the company more cost competitive has been reached, with union members voting on it this past Friday (after our deadline). While insiders suggest Car Plant No. 2, a winner of quality and productivity awards for GM over the last few years, is a goner come 2008, the minister suggests there may be some way to salvage the 2,500 jobs that will be lost for good if and when the plant closes down. There is a lot riding on provincial — and federal — help with General Motors. To see the auto giant scaled back by nearly a quarter of its Durham workforce would have a severe impact on the local and provincial economy. Many times those 2,500 jobs would be lost in terms of spinoff employment. While Durham, which is constantly growing and developing, would not be dev- astated, it would take a beating. That’s why the issue also requires the attention of the fed- eral government, especially finance minister Jim Flaherty, who represents Whitby-Oshawa. Mr. Flaherty should work together with Oshawa MP Colin Carrie and Heritage minister Bev Oda, Durham MP, and convince Prime Minister Stephen Harper that GM may need tax breaks or incentives to keep up its level of investment in Canada. The three MPs have many constituents who either work at GM or work for supplier companies who do business with the auto maker. The provincial and federal governments, which contributed heavily to the Beacon Project, need to stay on the issue of corporate cost competitiveness to make sure GM is vi- able and strong in Canada for many years to come. Only an individual should make organ decision To the editor: Re: ‘Organ bill offers choice, saves lives,’ editorial, March 5. When it involves a human being and his or her organs, there can be no such thing as “presumed consent”. Presumed consent opens the door for implied ownership on behalf of the group harvesting the organs. It is the next step to taking and consequently removes the honour between those who are asking and those who are giving. How one disposes of his/her organs upon death should never come under the regulation and/or jurisdiction of any government body. This issue should not be up for debate in the House of Commons under any bill. When Canada is graced with a governing body that is free of neglect, misman- agement, and corruption, then would said governing body proudly have the honour, respect, and trust of the Canadian people to oversee presumed consent. However, until that day comes we all know what happens when one assumes. The alternative is clear. Instead of legislation, how about education? For example, when a person renews his/her li- cence, simply include a pamphlet that outlines the process for harvesting a donor’s organs. Remove the fear and miscon- ceptions that people have regarding the donation of organs. I t seems like you can’t open your mouth for fear of being sued these days. Although we haven’t become as trig- ger happy as our neighbours to the south, it seems that society has become eager to take even the most miniscule issues to court. People apparently are mindless au- tomatons and all their woes can be attributed directly to anyone but them- selves. You have obese people suing fast- food franchises, smokers suing tobacco companies, people suing homeowners after they get drunk, do some stupid stunt and injure themselves. Sometimes parents even involve their kids... • A New Brunswick man sued the local amateur hockey association on be- half of his 16-year-old son, claiming his son should have received the league’s MVP trophy. He also sought $200,000 in punitive and psychological damages. • A 17-year-old cheerleading squad captain was stripped of her title after being caught with alcohol and ciga- rettes. She sued her school district for her title to be returned to her along with $50,000. These lawsuits have paralyzed our society making it impossible for people to get access or do what’s right for fear of legal retribution. Those who serve society such as physicians and emer- gency workers have to think about law- suits when they should be just worrying about the job at hand. Thankfully, most of these cases are thrown out before going to court but that hasn’t prevented us from becoming uptight and paranoid. Why else would a toilet brush have a label which states “d o not use for personal hygiene.” Not all civil suits are frivolous. There are cases of gross negligence such as the Red Cross blood scandal or Walk- erton where justice needs to be swift and harsh. But we need to stop wasting taxpayers’ money, which serves to feed only the civil litigators, and do the right thing. My wife and I are expecting a baby in May, and recently had an ultrasound at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville. We were hoping to know the baby’s gender, but were informed by the technician that she wouldn’t check because the hospital had been sued. It’s pretty hard to fathom that someone would be so petty as to sue the hospital because they gave the wrong sex of a baby but it’s equally troubling that we allow these morons to dictate the way our society operates. Another woman makes a mental note of exit routes from her house — not for fear of fire — but in case she has to escape an attacker. “Can you imagine having to live like that?” asks Wendy Leeder, shelter ser- vices director at Y’s Wish, one of Os- hawa’s safe havens for abused women. “Whether you talk about it or don’t talk about it, violence against women is happening in Durham. I don’t know if people really understand that.” Proof lies in the fact that the 15 beds at Y’s Wish are almost always filled, and the shelter’s 24-hour crisis line receives about 1,000 calls every year. Elsewhere in the community, other shelters are also full. In fact, Y’s Wish opened its doors three years ago because Oshawa’s De- nise House couldn’t keep up with de- mand. Tu cked away on an average street behind the walls of a nondescript house, Y’s Wish keeps a low profile to protect the women who sleep in the modest bedrooms, and the children who sort through donated toys in the cheerful playroom. ‘Whether you talk about it or don’t talk about it, violence against women is happening in Durham. I don’t know if people really understand that.’ WENDY LEEDER Staff struggle with the fact that this same low profile can make it hard for them to raise awareness in the com- munity and bring in the funds they need desperately. It costs about $100 day for Y’s Wish to provide shelter, meals and services to one person. While the government pays 80 per cent of the operating costs, the remaining 20 per cent works out to about $120,000 a year. “That’s h uge,” Ms. Leeder says. “Es- pecially when you consider how many other wonderful charities there are in Durham that need those same funds, and how many high-profile organiza- tions, like the university and the cancer centre, also need funding.” The shelter recently launched a new fundraiser to coincide with Interna- tional Women’s Week from March 5 to 11. “It’s such an essential service that we provide,” says Judy Mead, the shel- ter’s funds development co-ordinator. “We’re not only helping women today, the impact of what we do is something they carry with then forever.” In addition to providing shelter and a crisis line, Y’s Wish, which is part of YWCA Durham, offers counselling for women and children, help with transi- tional housing, referrals to other com- munity agencies, and a new outreach program aimed at women in North Durham. Staff also work to instil confidence and self-awareness in young women through a program called Girls Speak Out, and educate the community about domestic violence and the chal- lenges that battered women face even after coming to the shelter, like custody battles and affordable housing. They would love to do even more, but the annual target of $120,000 bare- ly maintains the services offered now. The community can help by sup- porting this month’s Wish Upon a Star campaign and the third annual Starry Nights dinner and dance coming up in June. The 22 staff members who keep Y’s Wish running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, are also looking for a donation of subsidized office space, so they can have a presence on the streets of Durham without compromising the security of the shelter. For more information about Wish Upon a Star or Y’s Wish, call Judy Mead at 905-576-6743 or e-mail jm@ywcadurham.org. Did you know that 14% of Canadaʼs power outages are caused by tree contact with power lines? * You may also be interested in knowing that Veridian Connections’ record is much better than the national average. In 2005, just 6.8% of our outages were due to tree interference. This is a record that we want to continue. That’s why, as part of our regular maintenance program, we will soon be trimming trees located near overhead power lines in the Town of Bowmanville. Our work will be confined to the area bordered by Liberty Street to the east, Regional Road No. 57 to the west, Concession Road No. 3 to the north and Lake Ontario to the south. We will begin work in mid-March and finish by the end of May 2006. While the reliability of your electricity supply is an important consideration in our maintenance plans, we also recognize the aesthetic value of trees. Our tree trimmers are trained arborists and will ensure that the health of the community’s trees is not compromised. It takes him places, enables him. But quite often it is his environment, not his wheelchair that limits his mobility. “A ccessibility is not confined to Druce Ayers,” he said. “It embraces the whole community.” The 61-year-old Ajax resident is an incomplete paraple- gic. A stroke 22 years ago left him unable to balance and therefore unable to walk. Each day he, like so many disabled people in Durham, faces obstacles to accessibility. “For me it is constant,” Mr. Ayers said. Impaired mobility and issues of accessibility extend beyond a wheelchair -- from loss of sight to a heart condi- tion. “When we talk about access we are talking about access to jobs, transportation, recreation and more,” Mr. Ayers said. “You really can’t appreciate a problem until you have walked a mile in the individual’s shoes.” Mr. Ayers’ challenges begin in his home. It has been remodelled to suit his needs while still being comfortable for his family. Carpeting was replaced with tile and hard- wood, his refrigerator is custom built and the microwave is placed at a height he can reach. Living in a two-storey home, he chose not to put in a lift. Instead, he crawls up and down the stairs. Over the past 22 years, if he only made that trek to and from bed, he would have climbed the stairs 189,900 times. It’s an activity, that, over the years, has left him with torn biceps and injuries to his rotator cuffs. Leaving the home at any time presents unique chal- lenges. He must start preparing to leave a minimum of two hours before departure. He drives, but getting in and out of his van is a complicated process of pulling himself and his chair in and out. At a convenience store in Ajax there is a cutaway in the curb, but the sidewalk to the store is filled with windshield fluid, propane canisters and even a Canada Post mailbox. In order to get into the store, Mr. Ay ers has to muster up the strength to pop a wheelie and propel himself over the curb. At Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital, all of the wheelchair parking spots are located inside the parking lot and the cost is $7 to park. Should he simply need to drop in for a minute, the temporary pay parking located just outside the lot is virtually impossible to use because the pay station is not accessible. Coffee shops, banks and stores all over Durham present a challenge for Mr. Ayers, but there are places addressing accessibility, he says. The library in Ajax has elevators and wheelchair-accessible washrooms, as well as automatic doors at its entrance. The Ajax Community Centre stands as an example of effective handicap parking. The spaces are wide enough so he can get his wheelchair in and out of the van. Mr. Ayers stresses that things like automatic doors not only are a benefit to someone in a wheelchair, but also to someone like a mother, arms loaded with kids and bags. “If you cater to those who are the least able it only serves to assist the entire community,” he said. Following the chair’s lead Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photos News Advertiser reporter Erin Hatfield, left, spent time in a wheelchair as part of a recent afternoon with Ajax resident Druce Ay ers. She found that despite many steps forward over the past few years, there still remain many barriers to a truly accessible community. Druce Ayers finds the main branch of the Ajax Public Library, above, to be a good example of a barrier-free destination, while at right, a convenience store had a cutaway in the curb, but it wasn’t usable because of clutter on the sidewalk. At far right, leaving home takes two hours of preparation. Saturday & Evening Appt.’s Available FREE CONSULTATION www.jamesryanch.com B Y A PPT . They are all members of the Bereaved Families of Ontario Durham Region (BFO). March 5 was the organization’s an- nual Walk to Remember. More than 100 participants, all in royal blue hats and wearing buttons with pictures of their lost loved ones, strolled through the Five Points Mall in Oshawa. “When you first start walking it is kind of sad,” Cathy Wiener said. “But by the end of the morning you see how much money was made and that (the group) can keep going for another year.” The banner at this year’s walk was donated in memory of Karl Wiener. Karl was 17 years old when he died of leu- kemia in 1996. Karl’s parents, Fritz and Cathy, said finding BFO was a tremen- dous help while they grieved. “It is a wonderful group,” the Bow- manville woman said. “I always call it a safe place.” She explained a parent who suffers such a loss never wants their child to be forgotten. The group gave them a place to talk about their child. “It also answers the question, ‘why me’?” Ms. Wiener said. “You see that it is not just you.” The organization holds two major fundraisers each year, the walk and the Angel Tree Light campaign. These fund- raisers help to provide money for the organization to operate. The walk alone raises somewhere in the area of $10,000 through pledges. “We have a daughter at home and we can do all sorts of things for her,” Ms. Wiener said. “What can we do for Karl? We can do this.” This is the 10th year of the walk, which welcomes anyone who wants to walk in memory of a loved one. Christine Ferguson is the executive di- rector of the BFO Durham. The organiza- tion has 600 members, all of whom have suffered the loss of a child or grandchild. “They call it a death out of time,” Ms. Ferguson said. “A parent is not supposed to bury their child.” The main focus of the group is the loss of a child and helping the healing begin for parents. From new parents who had a stillborn baby to an elderly man who lost his 52-year-old son, the members are varied and all have, in different ways, experienced the loss of a child or grand- child. “With that comes a different sort of grieving process,” Ms. Ferguson said. The walk brings together many people who have had similar experiences. Al- though it raises a great deal of money for BFO Durham, Ms. Ferguson said it is about much more than that. “It isn’t so much about money as it is remembering our loved ones.” Hundreds walk to r emember lost loved ones Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo A woman signs a note next to a photo on a picture banner at the Bereaved Families of Ontario Durham Region’s Walk to Remember last weekend. The honour is awarded to a public-sector organiza- tion that demonstrated a campaign that was enthusias- tic, covered the entire orga- nization, and demonstrated a full co-operation and part- nership between manage- ment and staff. The campaign had a $120,000 goal, which the Region exceeded. The 2005 campaign saw an 11 per cent increase over what had been raised in pre- vious years. Staff organized bake and Christmas plant sales, dress-down days, and a comedy festival to raise the funds. “We were extremely proud to have been recog- nized by them,” Durham chief administrative officer Garry Cubitt said. He made special mention of Gary Asselin, who works in the finance department and headed up the initiative. “He has demonstrated commitment, leadership and enthusiasm second to none,” Mr. Cubitt said. Hospital letter DURHAM — Durham wants the Rouge Valley Health System’s board of directs to report to regional council about its services. The Region passed a motion in December 2005 to withhold $3.5 million pre- viously approved by Dur- ham council for capital ex- pansion at the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital site, until council is satisfied with the services provided. “I thought the answer was pretty clear, you are not getting the money until you come to council and satisfy us,” Roger Anderson said. Pickering Mayor David Ryan assured council a recruitment committee is active, a pediatrician has been hired and talks with obstetricians are ongoing. A motion passed to again invite the chairman of the board and chief ex- ecutive officer to appear before council and update them at the next meeting. Also, the Region is working on meeting involv- ing the minister of health, area mayors and Mr. Ander- son. Invasive trees DURHAM — Steps can be taken to manage and con- trol invasive tree species in Durham Region forests. The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority was granted approval to use herbicides to manage and control the spread of inva- sive tree species in the red pine plantation in the Durham Region Forest. Environment Canada is sponsoring the invasive alien species partnership program as various alien tree and shrub species have become established throughout the Lake Simcoe watershed. The species have the potential to displace natural species. The program includes cutting or the girding of certain trees, followed by the application of herbicide to ensure the tree or shrub won’t regenerate. Industry minister pushes GM to stay open By Izabela Jaroszynski Staff Writer DURHAM — Ontario’s in- dustry minister is not willing to concede defeat in the fight to keep General Motors Os- hawa assembly plant 2 open. At an auto parts conference on Wednesday, Joe Cordiano, minister of economic devel- opment and trade, said the government is making a case for the future of the award- winning plant. “This is not a done deal,” he said. “We’ve made that clear to the company and we’re in ongoing negotiations with them to look at what new product can be built at plant number 2.” In the past few years, the Ontario and federal govern- ments have contributed $435 million in aid for GM proj- ects as part of the company’s $2.5-billion Beacon Project commitment. GM initially announced the closure of plant 2 in Novem- ber. In a recent interview, Jim Cameron, director of labour relations, reaffirmed that the plant’s imminent close date is 2008. “That decision was made in November,” he said. “We have to forget about plant 2.” The company is hoping to turn the Oshawa facility into a large Flexible Manufactur- ing Plant that would allow for a variety of car models to be built at the same time. Such a facility might include add- ing a third shift to the plant, but would not make up for the job loss resulting from the closure of the second car plant, Mr. Cameron said in the interview. Mr. Cordiano’s comments came as more than 11,000 GM workers in Oshawa pre- pared to vote on an agree- ment reached between their union and the company that, if ratified, will mean some major changes at the auto plants, including a decrease in relief times and the out- sourcing of non-trades main- tenance workers. GM has stressed that with- out the agreement, Oshawa will not be in the running to receive the money for the implementation of the Flex Plant, which would in turn put them it of the running for future product allocation. The minister said that he remains confident that some kind of agreement can be reached. “If required, we will go to Detroit to make the point we should get a product mandate,” Mr. Cordiano said. “We have proven on merit, we are the best.” — With files from Torstar GM p lant closing ‘not a done deal’ Durham Region in brief SUNDAY, MARCH 12, 2006 Mike Pochwat/ News Advertiser photo Career advice DURHAM — The recent Youth Skilled Trades Fair at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium featured vari- ous skilled trade sector representatives discussing their careers. TMA is a laboratory-generated report derived from a lock of hair (a sample is taken from the nape of the neck). The report reveals a very concise breakdown of a person’s elemental chemistry, which includes Nutritional Elements, Toxic Elements (heavy metals), and also the Significant Ratios. Nutritional Elements serve as co-factors and co- enzymes making reactions complete, and when imbalances occur homeostasis (equilibrium of the internal systems of the body) is susceptible. When imbalances in these areas Tissue mineral analysis are exposed, specific recommendations are made providing a solution to correct troublesome symptoms at the root cause. For example, the thyroid gland may not function optimally with our adequate iron, the pancreas may need a certain amount of calcium to release insulin, and high levels of tissue calcium may indicate that the body is not metabolizing calcium efficiently, as excess calcium shows up in the soft tissues (hair), rather than in the hard tissues (bone). Perhaps the body is too acidic from dietary intake and calcium is being utilized to neutralize acid. Osteoporosis and many other diseases may be a result of nutritionally induced metabolic difficulties. The TMA Is worth a pound of cure. A long forgotten proverb which is one of the principal tenets of Naturopathy. Naturopathic medicine focuses on disease prevention, patient education, health maintenance and the natural treatment of disease. Naturopathy works to enhance the body’s own healing power and honours not only the therapeutic effects of natural remedies, but also our body’s attempts to move to a balanced state of health. Each of us has a self-healing force within us, unfortunately, our own capabilities are hidden by poor diet, little exercise, poor air and water quality, daily work, and life stressors. Naturopathy treats illness, while focusing on prevention and cure. The art and practice of naturopathic medicine is a holistic approach to health that relies upon An Ounce of Prevention…. the clinical experience of the practitioner as well as an intuitive sense of what will work best for each patient. Naturopathic doctors combine the art and science of disease treatment and prevention through the use of safe, gentle, non- invasive therapies and gentle hands-on techniques such as nutrition, botanical medicine, acupuncture, physical medicine, lifestyle counseling, and homeopathy. Patients are encouraged to take an active role in the treatment of their illness and to bring forth their own wisdom and knowledge to the consultations. The treatment focuses on the underlying causes of illness rather than the symptoms, often eliminating or reducing the need for long-term medical care and prescription drugs. lab report will indicate the status of calcium as well as iron, chromium and zinc and many other elements. But what are the risks and benefits associated with drug therapy versus “talk” therapy? According to a survey published by Consumer Reports in 2004, in which more than 3,000 respondents participated, drug treatments may work faster on symptoms, but they also have more serious side effects than people realize. Talk therapy with a qualified mental health practitioner, on the other hand, can yield equally effective results as medication – but without any long-term dependency or undesirable effects. Dr. David Direnfeld is one such practitioner. As a clinical psychologist who specializes in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), he has observed first-hand the remarkable impact CBT has had on his patients. “I have seen astonishing, dramatic changes in patients who never thought it was possible to overcome their fears and worries,” he says. CBT is an evidence-based breakthrough in mental health Beyond Freud: how talk therapy can change your life care. Dr. Direnfeld, who has been practicing CBT since the early 90s, is now the clinical director of the Centre for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Ajax, a treatment facility committed to using research-based mental health treatments. “Helping people change their lives using CBT is, honestly, the most rewarding part of my job. It’s quite astounding.” Here’s how it works. CBT focuses on how our thoughts influence our feelings and behaviours. Every mental disorder – like depression, anxiety or panic disorder – is the result of distorted, irrational thought patterns. Usually there is a particular situation or trigger – like, for example, dirt/germs, a crowded mall or a traumatic memory – which causes an unusually high level of distress. It is not, however, the situation or trigger which causes distress. It is, instead, our distorted interpretation of it. And these habitual distortions in thinking – or “automatic thoughts” – can cause people to withdraw, panic, avoid situations or engage in other self-defeating behaviour. CBT uses structured techniques to change distorted thought patterns by weakening the connection between distressing stimuli and our automatic reactions to them. During the CBT treatment, patients discover new ways of dealing with difficult situations, often through gradual exposure to them. The goal is accurate and rational thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Drugs alone might make you feel better faster – sure. But well-researched “talk” treatments like that of CBT are just as effective – and longer lasting. Just look at the evidence. Study after study shows CBT to be as effective as medication in treating conditions like depression, and better than medication for treating conditions like anxiety. “These are well-documented facts,” says Dr. Direnfeld. “So it’s my job, essentially, to work myself out of a job – and help patients get better.” The Centre for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is located at 95 Bayly Street West, in Ajax. For more information, contact Dr. David Direnfeld at 905-427-2007 or email info@ccbt.ca. Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome What is wrong? The most common findings for Fibromyalgia (FM) are chronic pain, fatigue, pain to touch, sleep disorders and inability to handle stress. There is much similarity to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), which as the name suggests has a greater degree of fatigue. The diagnostic criterion for FM is when 11 or more areas are found to be greatly tender to touch. It is unclear how these disorders begin and exactly what is the cause. There are no specific drugs that target the cause of this disease. An area in the brain called the limbic system regulates among other things body rhythms such as sleep/wake cycle and tolerance to stress and pain. When this system does not function properly, the result is the plethora of symptoms found with what is termed FM or CFS. What can help? Nerves that lead to organs and muscles exit the spinal column between each vertebra. When vertebrae are misaligned they can put pressure on these nerves and cause interference to the nervous system: this is called a subluxation. This interference can also lead to imbalance in the central nervous system (the brain) through a process called deafferentation. Chiropractic is effective in reducing and eliminating this interference caused by subluxations, bringing balance to the nervous system (both peripheral and central) of humankind; in fact, Chiropractors are the only doctors trained to find and adjust these subluxations. To find out more about FM and CFS and how Chiropractic can help you to achieve and maintain optimal health, please call 416 724 7574. Dr. Brian R. For the first time in five years, the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships won’t have the St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Monarchs as its representative from the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA). This season, it’s the year of the Ram. With the success of the Rams during the post-season, emerging as LOSSA champions after a six- overtime period struggle with Whit- by’s Father Leo J. Austin Wildcats, co-coach Derrick Rushton notes anything is possible when they lace them up at OFSAA. “It’s fantastic for the girls; it’s just huge,” says Rushton of earning a berth in the 16-team OFSAA show- case. “We have some of the best players in Durham Region. They have the ability to change a game. We play them a lot and they’ve stepped up to the challenge.” Ajax High booked its ticket to OFSAA following a thrilling 4-3 win in a thrilling overtime game in Uxbridge last Tuesday. Rams’ for- ward Kirsten Roach completed the hat trick by scoring the winning goal with 39 seconds remaining in one-minute, 1-on-1 play in the sixth overtime frame. End-to-end action marked regu- lation time between Ajax and Aus- tin. Roach opened the scoring fol- lowing an end-to-end rush. Austin responded with two quick goals late in the period to take a 2-1 lead. Rams’ Kaitlyn Hill later found her sister Lindsay breaking up the mid- dle, sending her on a breakaway, with Hill scoring on a backhand deke. Once again Austin tied the game late in the third period, as Gillian Morillo took the puck to the slot and fired the puck to the top corner. With the game tied 3-3, and after six overtime periods, Ajax’s Roach emerged as the hero, sending the Rams home with the LOSSA title. After several hours of intense hockey, Rushton says his charges rose to the challenge against an equally strong Austin squad. “The girls played amazing. They battled to the end and were reward- ed for their hard work. The fan sup- port was great. It was really nice to see so many students come out and support this team. The atmosphere in the rink was electric.” Co-coach Wayne Murphy added, “What a great team Ajax has as- sembled, and the future looks great. Many of these players will be re- turning next year as only two play- ers are in Grade 12.” The Rams brought a 3-4-2 regu- lar-season record into the playoffs. But, like all good teams do, they were able to reach another level come playoff time. “They came together, they really did,” says Rushton. “They did what had to be done. Our best players were our best players every game.” In the round-robin quarter-final playoffs in Uxbridge, Ajax High compiled a 1-1-1 record, enough to solidify a second-place finish in its pool and move on to the semifinals. In the quarter-finals, the Rams lost to the Uxbridge Secondary School Tigers, tied the Notre Dame Cou- gars and defeated the Dunbarton High Spartans. In the semifinal against the Sin- clair Celtics from Whitby, the Rams emerged with a 1-0 victory. Lindsay Hill scored the lone goal with Sa- mantha Mitchlits drawing an assist. Other team members are Jes- sica Ronald, Suzanne Sherman, Kim Roche, Emilie Ballarino, Katie Blakey, Ashley Brifoglio, Julianne Carr, Jodi McDonald, Aubrey Mc- Farlane, Samantha McFarlane, Katie Painter, Courtney Sellers, Vic- toria Smith and Leanne Tilley. Thermostat: A part in cooling system, (like a gate) that is a responsible for keeping the engine running at NTP. When starting a cold engine, the thermostat will be closed. Coolant circulation to the radiator is prohibited. As the engine heats up, temperature rises. As it reaches a preset value, the thermostat will start to open and let the coolant circulate to the radiator where it cools off, preventing overheating. Simple!!! A matter of fact is thermostats have a certain life time span. As they malfunction, they may open too soon and wider, resulting in a longer warm up time and not reaching NTP, or too late and narrow, resulting in overheating. In older carbureted vehicles, cold started engines needing more gas to perform, before reaching NTP is achieved by closing the air passage to the intake manifold by means of the choke. The thermostat was still needed to regulate NTP. If the choke sticks closed or partially closed, after the engine warms up, the engine will be sucking way more gas than it should. As a result, not all gas will be burned and combustion will be incomplete. Incomplete combustion produces lots of harmful emissions. Modern vehicles use electronic fuel in- jection to control emissions ad maximize power, through the use of computers (ECM) and differ- ent sensors and actuators. Depending on the in- formation the ECM receives, it processes certain orders to be executed by different actuators. One of the very important inputs to the ECM is the engine temperature. ECM sees a colder than NTP engine and will order a richer mixture, resulting in more gas consumption and higher emissions levels. We promise you the following: 1. Only qualifi ed people will work on your car. 2. We’ll never do anything that is not required and APPROVED by you. 3. Every time we repair your vehicle, we will test it out to make certain it is ok. 4. We’ll follow up a few days later to make sure you’re satisfi ed. 5. You’ll always know how much the repair will cost before we do any work. It will be very clear what was done. WE HAVE NO SECRETS. 6. If you want to know anything about the work that was done or how it was priced, please feel free to ask. I will gladly explain. 7. That every repair or service we do on your vehicle, or part we sell, will meet your satisfaction. 8. That every job is warranted, and that we will live up to the terms of that warranty. With Cobourg sidelined, the Lightning now play Brantford. The Lightning closed out the Cobourg series with a 3-1 victory in Game 2 in Cobourg. After trailing 2-0 through most of the con- test, Cobourg pulled its goaltender and pared the deficit to a goal with 24 seconds remaining. Light- ning’s Stacey Hios, with her second of the game, scored an empty-net marker to seal the deal with eight seconds remaining. Ta ylor Schlag opened the scoring, with assists going to Nikita Simone and Lisa Buratynski. Other assists went to Jessica McVety with two, team captain Laura Brighton and Rebec- ca Rutherford. Defencemen Gina Draves and Deanna Bartlett held strong in the waning min- utes of the game. Amber MacRae and Sarah Joseph put ample offensive pressure on the Stars deep in their zone. Amanda Russo and Ruth- erford carried the defen- sive load when Jennifer Collins went down with an injury. In Game 1 in Pickering, Durham West prevailed by a 2-1 score. Simone scored the winner in the third period, capitalizing after a passing play between Brighton and Buratynski. Cobourg opened the scor- ing in the first period, with Brighton scoring the equal- izer in the second. Simone and Russo earned assists. The Lightning’s Jackie Rochefort was brilliant, turning away 32 shots for the victory. Christina Provenzano came close to putting the game out of reach with a long shot from over centre on the open net but hit the post. Collins was solid on defence. Sandra Kinder was side- lined for both games with the flu. George and Karen Purchmajer coach the team. Anita Rutherford is the trainer.
