The director of the North Pickering Land Exchange Team said the Prov- ince has worked hard to make sure the new provincially planned community on provincially owned land would be a sustainable community complete with community facilities, employment and transit. “We’re trying to walk the walk and talk the talk in terms of a sustainable community for the 21st century,” Mr. Kozman said. Many of the features that will set Seaton apart from any other suburban community have recently been added to the Province’s Central Pickering De- velopment Plan. On Feb. 1, 12 pages of proposed mod- ifications were released for public input. The modifications include changes to transit, talk of servicing the employ- ment lands along Hwy. 407 early in the process, and adding a new policy about achieving six, broad, sustainable com- munity principles. These ideas aren’t anything new when it comes to the de- velopment of Seaton -- they’re ideas the City of Pickering has discussed as it did its own development plan for the area. “We tried very much to acknowledge the City of Pickering in terms of the amendments we proposed,” Mr. Koz- man said. “We’ve gone a long way to address the issues they identified in September and October.” Alvin Adams wants youths off the streets and into class This is the second in a series of stories in February looking at Black History Month and the issues and community leaders in Ajax and Pickering. By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer AJAX — When Alvin Adams picked up a newspaper and saw the faces of eight, dead, uneducated black youths, he decided to take action. A black man and father to three grown sons, Mr. Adams was not proud of the picture on the front page of the Caribbean Camera newspaper a cou- ple of years ago. He decided to help get more black youths into a photo they could be proud of -- a graduation shot. Retired from his job at IBM, Mr. Adams embarked on a volunteer education mentoring program to help keep kids in class and out of gangs. “There’s nothing better than getting a formal education,” said the Ajax resi- dent whose sons attended Pickering High School and went on to post-sec- ondary education. Along with a long list of career ac- complishments through his work at IBM, Mr. Adams has been involved in many community initiatives, such as an adviser for the Town of Ajax’s diver- sity committee, a member of Durham Regional Police’s community diversity program committee, a consultant on diversity, equity and race relations for the Durham District School Board, an advocate for parents of suspended and expelled students, and more. Mr. Adams is also a teacher by trade. Drawing on his business experi- ence, Mr. Adams developed an edu- cation mentoring program that helps students in kindergarten to Grade 12. Through it, volunteers teach basic reading, writing and math skills in an attempt to reduce the drop-out rate among black students from 40 to 20 per cent. Guest speakers and history- geography lessons are also provided to increase pride and inspire academic success. In time, Mr. Adams would like to see the program expanded to educate Durham man working to reduce dropout rate ✦ See Employment, Page 4 ✦ See All, Page 2 DEFENDING THE WRONG MAN? A.J. Province ‘committed’ to hospital redevelopment But Caplan fails to deliver announcement on timeline By Danielle Milley Staff Writer DURHAM — Hospital chairman Dave Sinclair was happy to hear Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering re- development is on the minister of public infrastructure renewal’s radar. “You’ve certainly made a good case for moving rapidly. I look forward to, on maybe my next visit out here, (making the announcement),” said David Caplan. “We’re committed to making it happen. “It’s on our radar.” Mr. Caplan was the guest speaker at a Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade breakfast Friday morning. Of the more than 60 people in attendance, many had questions about when the provincial government would ap- prove the $59-million hospital re- development plan. Questions came from politicians, business leaders and community members, illustrat- ing how united the community is to see it through. The community’s por- tion of the funding has already been raised and the plans are done. Mr. Sinclair was part of the large hospital presence at the breakfast. “I would say we’re slightly more optimistic. We’ve been dealing with the minister for about a year now to make sure we’re on the radar,” he said after the speech. “It’s nice to hear he is aware of what we’re going to expe- rience in terms of future demand, as well as our present situation.” ✦ See Province, Page 4 BLACK HISTORY MONTH Ref lecting... They’re going to steal, they’re going to shoot someone in the process,” said Mr. Adams. “We have to get them back in the classroom.” In Durham, the mentoring program is currently provided to the Durham City Basketball Association on Sundays for two hours, and at the Word of Truth Christian Church in Pickering on Satur- days for four hours. Mr. Adams said 121 students from across the GTA enrolled in the program at the church -- much more than the 25 they had hoped for originally. Four programs are provided in Scarborough. In addition to the program, Mr. Adams goes to different schools and talks to principals about students who may be at risk to see if there is anything he can do to help. “While others are talking about want- ing to take action, I am,” said Mr. Adams. “We’re cutting off that feeder group to the gangs. No one solution will be the solution, but you know, every little sug- gestion helps.” In the mentoring program, they talk about the heroes from history such as Rosa Parks -- an American black woman who refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man in the 1950s. “She has helped them see themselves as important,” said Mr. Adams. Mr. Adams said Black History Month gives people an opportunity to pause and think about the contributions and selflessness demonstrated by those be- fore them. He encourages youth to think about what they want to be remembered for. He added he thinks black history should occur every day instead of just having a month set aside. By Danielle Milley Staff Writer DURHAM — It missed the first deadline, but the Rouge Valley Health System made it just in time for the second one. The hospital’s board of directors signed its hos- pital accountability agreement with the Ministry of Health and Long Term care on Jan. 31. The original deadline to sign was Nov. 30. The Province is aiming to sign agreements with every hospital in Ontario, as a way of cutting staggering health-care costs. Under the two-year agreements, the hospitals must promise to bal- ance their budgets while still maintaining service levels. “It just means we will endeavour to operate with a balanced budget while still providing the ser- vices the community needs,” said Dave Sinclair, chairman of the Rouge Valley hospital board. The board has sent the ministry its revised plan and the list of some of the things it is planning on doing to minimize its deficit, which it will still have this year despite the agreement. “They’re comfortable with us running a small deficit this year,” Mr. Sinclair said. The hospital expects to run about a $5-million deficit and then have a balanced budget next year. “We have a number of things we’re going to look at (to balance it).” Mr. Sinclair said the positive effect of the agree- ments is that they create consistency across the system. In the past Rouge Valley would make cuts and do everything it could to try to balance its budget, he said, while other hospitals wouldn’t make as much effort and they’d end up receiving a bail- out. “A nytime you’re accountable, it’s a good thing,” he said. Just before the Jan. 31 deadline, Health Min- ister George Smitherman indicated the majority of Ontario’s 152 hospitals would have an agree- ment signed within a few weeks. About a dozen hospitals, including Lakeridge Health, are having a tougher time getting to that point. — with files from Jillian Follert Rouge Valley in provincial agreement PICKERING — Rehabilitation services at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital recently got a $85,000 boost. The department was the recipient of the pro- ceeds from the inaugural Pickering Mayor’s Gala held in November. The money is to be used to enhance rehab services for seniors. In total $110,000 was raised at the gala, with the rest of the proceeds going to the Juno Beach Fund. Mayor Dave Ryan said the event was such a success it will be going ahead this year. “We had such positive feedback from the first one, people are already calling saying they want to reserve their ticket,” he said. He said the Ajax and Pickering hospital would again be the recipient. As well, Mayor Ryan said a portion would go towards funding the building of a Durham West Arts Centre. “I’m really pleased it was such a success,” he said of the black-tie affair. “I’d like to extend my thanks to all those who supported it.” Hospital benefits from gala’s success Flaherty earns finance, GTA duties, Oda in charge of heritage, status of women By Erin Hatfield Staff Writer DURHAM — Durham stepped into the federal spotlight Monday when Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed two local MPs to cabinet. Jim Flaherty, MP for Whitby-Oshawa, was made minister of finance and minister responsible for the Greater Toronto Area, while Durham MP Bev Oda became minister of Canadian heritage and status of women. “When you look around Canada it is hard to find a region with two ministers,” Mr. Flaherty said Tuesday from Ottawa. “It shows the prime minister is committed to the (Greater Toronto Area).” Mr. Flaherty is happy to have been named min- ister of an agency that he said is a central one of the government and Canada. “I am a quick learner,” Mr. Flaherty said. “I have to learn more about the federal aspect of it but I am not afraid of a little hard work.” Already, Mr. Flaherty has begun thinking about some of the challenges he hopes to address, such as the fiscal imbalance and funding for Lakeridge Health Corporation, which he said needs financial help from the federal government. “We have already looked at the child-care al- lowance and the GST reduction as promised,” Mr. Flaherty said. “Also, I am concerned about infra- structure issues. The GTA is difficult to get around. The GTA is important economically to Ontario and to Canada.” He said the Conservatives’ first budget will be out this spring. A graduate of Princeton University, Mr. Flaherty practiced law for more than 20 years before enter- ing politics. He then spent 10 years as a member of provincial parliament, where he was in Ernie Eves’s cabinet as minister of enterprise, opportunity and innovation, and in Mike Harris’s cabinet as deputy premier and minister of finance, among others. Like Mr. Flaherty, Ms. Oda is stepping into her cabinet role with a great deal of experience under her belt. Although it was rumoured Ms. Oda, the former Conservative Party critic for the ministry of heritage, could be appointed to the portfolio when the Tories took a minority government on Jan. 23, Ms. Oda said she was not expecting to get the posi- tion. Ms. Oda said it was a day or two before Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced his cabinet that she received a call. “I thanked him very much for his confidence,” Ms. Oda said. “I told him I looked forward to being a part of his government and it is going to be a good government.” The department, she explained, is responsible for a number of different things, including Canada’s identity, broadcasting, culture, arts, art galleries, national ceremonies and many foundations. “It is quite a large department,” Ms. Oda said. She brings an extensive resume of experience to the position, including 25 years in the broadcast industry, and theatre experience. The days since her appointment have been ex- tremely busy and Ms. Oda said she has not yet start- ed to think about where she will take the portfolio. “I will just be starting to meet with senior officials and begin being briefed,” Ms. Oda said. “Then we will set out an action plan.” She has “no idea” when that action plan might be completed. I can’t give an opinion on timeline,” he said. “It’s important we do it in a way that we can deliver.” The Province doesn’t want to make any false promises or disappoint people, he added. The hospital extended an open invitation to Mr. Caplan to tour the hospital so he could see for himself why it needs a new emergency room, lab and diagnostic imaging area – just to name a few of the departments that would be expanded or redeveloped in the plan. The hospital wasn’t the only area of concern. There were also questions about setting aside land for a Durham College or University of On- tario Institute of Technology campus in Pick- ering’s Seaton Lands and placing a priority on employment lands in the provincially-owned and planned Seaton. “As we move forward (on Seaton) it is very much in our minds... to make sure we have business and employment, residential land, and, of course, the important institutional and education sites,” Mr. Caplan said. Transportation was also an area of interest and in particular the extension of Hwy. 407 through to Hwy. 35/115 and the widening of Hwy 7. “We are moving ahead on the widening of Hwy. 7 across the top of Durham Region... We do project that will go ahead in the five-year plan,” Mr. Caplan said. “The environmental as- sessment work has begun (on the 407). We will have to undergo property acquisition (once) route is decided on.” He said that step could take some time. “We do place that particular project in a very high priority for us,” he said. ✦ Province from page 1 Province doesn’t want to disappointEmployment areas ‘a very significant issue’ for City, Region Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson thought the Province was taking credit for ideas the Seaton Net Benefit Committee, of which he is the chair- man, proposed. “Most of the issues they have moved on are right on our list,” he said. Coun. Dickerson recently submitted a list on be- half of the committee of what the City wants before the land exchange (between developers who own land in Richmond Hill for land in Seaton) is finalized. One of the issues council and committee have been advo- cating for is creating a tran- sit-supportive community and having transit in place before any residents arrive. The new provincial policy regarding transit requires a development pattern that is accommodating to transit routes, as well as pedestrian and bicycle networks “in order to encourage and maximize the use of public transit within the City of Pickering and between neighbouring municipali- ties, from the earliest stage of development.” The issues surrounding the employment lands are also very important to the City. One modifica- tion that addresses employment is requiring the early servicing of the prestige employment areas. “(The employment areas are) a very significant issue for the City of Pickering and the Region of Durham and that speaks to that,” Mr. Kozman said. Despite moving closer to the City’s position on the employment lands, the Province has removed two areas designated for employment along Brock Road and changed them to residential areas to ac- commodate an additional 10,000 people. The plan released in July said the area would be for a popula- tion of up to 60,000 and now that number is 70,000, which has been made possible by not only the ad- ditional residential land, but also by adding some areas of high-density housing. Overall the City is happy that the Province appears to be listening. “We’re quite pleased that it looks like there is some movement,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. “It shows there is a basis for further discussion.” The one thing missing from the list of modifica- tions, said Coun. Dickerson, is any financial com- mitment. “I still need to see a commitment as to who is picking up the tab,” he said. The modifications can be viewed online at www. mah.gov.on.ca. Input is due by March 3. ✦ Employment from page 1 Doug Dickerson PICKERING — Proposed modifica- tions to the Province’s development plan for Seaton: • Evaluate the potential opportunities and constraints for the inclusion of a univer- sity-college campus site in the area; • High-density areas have been intro- duced on Taunton Road, at what is to be the Whites Road extension; • Plan for 15 neighbourhoods instead of 13 (two employment areas have been changed to residential); • Plan now identifies a number for the jobs to be created: 35,000; • Arts and cultural facilities have been added to the list of facilities the new com- munity will require; • Require a Hwy. 407 economic develop- ment study be completed before or at the same time as the first development pro- posal; and • Support the timely completion of the environmental assessment for the extension of Hwy. 407 to highways 35/115. Celia Klemenz/ News Advertiser photo DURHAM — Police are investigating after shots were fired in two separate incidents over the weekend. No injuries were reported. The first incident took place out- side a bar in Pickering on Sunday, Feb. 5 at approximately 1:30 a.m. Dur- ham Regional Police officers from the Ajax Pickering Community Police Of- fice were called to the Island Mix Bar on Brock Road after several gunshots were heard outside the bar. Witnesses said two males inside the bar were involved in a verbal altercation, po- lice report. One of the males left and reportedly fired several rounds from a weapon into the air while walking to his car in the parking lot. Police arrived and searched the area for the suspect, but no arrests were made. The suspect is described as black, 20 to 25 years old, with a medium build. He was wearing a black and red jacket and driving a beige Chevrolet Denali with one headlight burnt out. Police dis- covered a bullet hole through an east window and the remains of a projec- tile embedded in a south wall inside the apartment. Combine those two with some leftover pre- cipitation and you have what is known in the vernacular as “packing snow.” Packing snow, that mar- velous substance dreams are made of. All you have to do to get the kids away from the TV set and outside is shout “Hey guys! It’s great ‘packing!’” All Canadian kids east of Vancouver know what that means. It’s snowmen, and snowboard ramps high enough to break your neck. It’s snow-forts. It’s pitched battles to the death, with an unlimit- ed supply of ammo lying right at your feet. It’s heaven. Personally I’ve always con- sidered packing snow to be one of the chief reasons I had targets... I mean, kids. Some of the best winter memories I have are of me versus a dozen or more neigh- borhood rug-rats, filling the air full of icy, white projec- tiles, laughing our cans off until someone lost an eye or I was too tired to move any- more. And make no mistake, to a kid a snowball fight against a grown-up is a big deal. When else does the opportunity to hurl things with impunity at an authority figure occur? Never. It’s a very special time. So it was, with that senti- ment in mind, that I snuck out the garage door last week to sandbag my youngest and several of his buddies who were already engaged in a conflict of their own. My plan was sound. Qui- etly stockpile a half-dozen or so snowballs, then storm the enemy, Vimy-style, scatter- ing them. Then, in the ensu- ing panic, neatly pick-off the stragglers and weaklings. It had certainly worked before. Executed efficiently it might even end in tears. As it turned out I had overlooked only one small, but as it turns out, terri- bly significant detail. The kids had gotten older. When I roared out from my hiding place, I enjoyed only the briefest moment of sur- prise on the kids’ faces. After that it was the charge of the Light Brigade all over again. The children did not, as is usually their custom, scatter in confusion. No. After the ini- tial shock, they very quickly hunkered down and returned fire. In a few awful seconds I found myself out of breath, out of ammunition and com- pletely surrounded. Then the little buggers opened up. Call me an idiot, but I had no idea an 11-year- old boy could put that kind of heat on a snowball. I felt like the 7th Cavalry at Little Big Horn. Finally, one arm shielding my face, I managed to stagger to a place of moderate safety where I pathetically tried to invoke some shred of parental control “OK! OK!” I panted. “Let’s have some rules here, all right?” Remarkably, they stopped. “All righty,” I wheezed, “Cause there’s six of you guys, and only one of me, I’ve only gotta hit you once and you’re out, but you’ve gotta hit me three times before I’m out...’kay?” In the old days this kind of deck-stacking would’ve raised howls of protest. Now, they only stood there, silently grin- ning and tossing their per- fectly rounded balls of death from hand to hand. A freckle-faced jackal at the back of the pack called out “What about head shots?” I went in the house. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his column. The newspaper contacts only those whose submissions have been chosen for publication./4& Durham gets two seats at the table Finance for Jim Flaherty; heritage/status of women for Bev Oda N ot since the days of the Mike Harris-Ernie Eves Tories has Dur- ham Region been so prominent at the cabinet table. In those not-so-long-ago days, Durham could boast three cabinet ministers at one time. But this time, it’s different. It’s not just the province of Ontario where we have clout, it’s the Government of Canada where we now have not one, but two cabinet ministers. The naming of Whitby-Oshawa’s Jim Flaherty as finance minister by new prime minister Stephen Harper is a tremendous honour for the Whitby lawyer. Mr. Flaherty brings with him a wealth of experience in provincial government where he was also finance minister in addition to holding a handful of other portfolios. A two-time runner-up for leader of Ontario’s Conservatives, Mr. Flaherty is respected as a no- nonsense politician who tells it like it is. Durham riding’s Bev Oda, one of just 14 Conservative women elected in January, becomes one of just five women MPs and six women total in the 28-person cabinet (Senator Marjory LeBretton is the Conservative leader in the Senate). Ms. Oda, who was heritage critic in the last session of Parliament, takes on that portfolio as well as the Status of Women post. It was important for Mr. Harper to get solid representation from the Greater Toronto Area, the country’s largest and wealthiest region. Of the 46 MPs elected in the GTA, just seven were Conservatives, includ- ing four from Durham Region alone (the other two are Oshawa’s Colin Carrie and Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock’s Barry Devolin). If Mr. Harper wants to break through from minority to majority sta- tus he will need to pick up nearly three dozen seats nationwide. It fol- lows that he must make some gains in the GTA and his appointment of Mr. Flaherty and Ms. Oda may help him to do so. For their part, Mr. Flaherty and Ms. Oda must bring that GTA per- spective with them into cabinet. Mr. Flaherty, who now has the most important job in government next to Mr. Harper, will have to craft a budget that wins friends and influences people in Ontario’s major cit- ies, where Tory candidates, for the most part, did not fare well in the last election. He’ll be able to emphasize budget measures which ben- efit Canadian cities and help urban voters understand a Conservative government is of benefit, not harm. Mr. Flaherty will also have to walk a budget tightrope in a minority situation where support will be needed by opposition parties to get the budget passed. He’ll need to find a balance between the promise to cut the GST by one percentage point, to maintain the five-cents-a-litre gas tax pledge and to meet the needs and concerns of dozens of other departments and causes across this great land. It will take tremendous skill and talent. We’re glad Mr. Harper has seen fit to entrust Mr. Fla- herty with this crucial role. Follow Neil’s BLOG: drinfo.ca/croneblog.html Party Whip has never decided Holland’s vote To the editor: Re: ‘Who does MP repre- sent?’ letter to the editor, Feb. 1. Letter writer J.L. Mose- ley inaccurately referenced correspondence we had ex- changed. At no time have I ever given as a reason for supporting any bill that I was following a ‘party line’. Moreover, I would never support any legislation that I did not agree with nor felt was contrary to the interests of my constituents. There have been several occasions where I have voted differently from the party position and I do not hesitate in doing so when I believe it is the right thing to do. There are many issues where our community is di- vided on an issue and I make a decision after listening and carefully considering both sides. Clearly in such ex- amples, some people will be happy with my position and some will be upset. However I vote, I do so with a firm conviction that it is the right position to take for our community and our country. I have never and will never vote for something because I get a call from the party Whip. Mark Holland, MP Ajax-Pickering McTeague ‘serves his entire riding,’ regardless of one’s political views To the editor: Re: ‘MP must represent ev- erybody, not just supporters,’ letter to the editor, Feb. 1. Letter writer Bob Boduch is right that MPs must represent all of their constituents. This is at the base of every democracy and it is the primary role of any elected representative. However, the decision by my campaign team to bar the News Advertiser from our victory party has taken on in- credulous proportions in your paper. In editorials and let- ters to the editor, I am being labelled anti-democratic and that I may serve only those who voted for me. Such claims are utterly pre- posterous. The Scarborough Mirror, as the News Advertiser ad- mits, was present at the vic- tory party -- even though it did not endorse me or the Liberal Party. Moreover, two major GTA newspapers spoke highly of my work in the last Parlia- ment and one endorsed me outright. So, it seems history has proven I can get by without re- ceiving an endorsement from the News Advertiser. The feigned outrage and at- tack on my character is just another politically-motivated commentary from the News Advertiser and a few Conser- vative letter writers. To suggest that being denied entry to a victory party means the loss of representative de- mocracy in our community is just too ridiculous for further comment. I have served, and will con- tinue to serve, all of the people of this riding -- irrespective of who they voted for. I also urge Mr. Boduch to contact me on any federal matter he needs assistance on. For its part, perhaps the News Advertiser can consider the results from the electorate in Pickering-Scarborough East to learn about endorsements that really count. They gave me a puck and I just loved it.” Eleven years later, the 19-year-old Ajax resident will attempt to help Can- ada bring home a gold medal in sledge hockey from the Paralympic Games in Tu r in, Italy from March 10 to 19. The left winger, who’s been on the Ca- nadian sledge hockey team for the past four years, says representing Canada and travelling overseas for his first-ever Games is the highlight of his life thus far. “I would say this is the best time in my life. It’s definitely a highlight,” he says. “I think it will probably all sink in once I get on the plane.” And, he’s hoping a great experience of representing Canada will turn into a golden one, too. He’s a believer that as good as Canada is in hockey, we’re just as talented in sledge hockey. Sledge hockey became a full medal Paralympic sport in 1998 in Nagano, Japan. Canada won a Paralympic silver medal that year and finished fourth in 2002. “We have a good team and a really good coaching staff. I think we have a really good chance,” says Booker, who was born with spina bifida, leaving him unable to walk. Canada’s currently ranked fourth in the world in sledge hockey, behind such countries as Norway and the U.S. But, the team’s recent success against the Americans augers well for the Paralym- pics, says Booker. The Canadians have played the U.S. on 10 occasions this year, winning most of the games. At a series of exhibition games in Boston last month, the Canadians won two of three. As for Norway, Booker says they’ve played them twice in tournaments this year, salvaging a split of the two meet- ings. The Canadians travel to Ottawa later this month for a final training camp where the team will undergo final prepa- rations prior to the Paralympics. They’ll fly from Montreal to Italy on March 4 for the Games, which begin less than a week later. Booker describes himself as someone who handles the sledge well, but doesn’t mind the physical punishment of the game. He can also chip in on the scoresheet from time to time. “I have quite a bit of speed and agility -- that’s what my coach likes me for. I can bury a goal every now and again to help out.” Sledge hockey, he says, is every bit as challenging as hockey, using much the same rules. “It’s a very skilled game, similar to hockey,” he explains. “We can skate just as fast as guys standing up and hit just as hard, it’s full contact, except that a few penalties are called definitely.” This past year has been a whirlwind of activity for Booker, not only travelling to Ottawa each month for training camps with the rest of the Canadian team, most of which reside in Ontario. But, each Sunday, he’s on the road to Cambridge where he meets up with several national team members from the Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo and To ronto areas to practice and play games against other sledge hockey teams. When he’s not training with members of the national team, Booker is at the Ajax Community Centre each Friday for a shinny sledge hockey session. While there, he does a lot of shooting practice and works on his other skills. In order to train, he’s put his college career at George Brown College in To- ronto on hold. He intends to return to college follow- ing the Paralympics. The Pickering resident was called up to the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League last Friday. The 5-foot-10, 198-pound forward made his AHL debut on Saturday, a 3-2 loss to the Peoria Rivermen. Lloyd spent most of the season with the Youngstown SteelHounds of the Central Hockey League. Cleveland is the AHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks. The 21-year-old has played 41 games for the SteelHounds, picking up 28 points, including 13 goals, along with 132 penalty minutes. He ranks third on the team in scoring. He attended the Barons training camp before being assigned to the SteelHounds. Lloyd was acquired by the Steel- Hounds in the CHL’s expansion draft in June. Last year, he played with the CHL Southern Conference champion Lar- edo Bucks, where he had 13 goals and 22 assists, to go with 103 penalty minutes. It was Lloyd’s first year of professional hockey. He played his junior hockey with the Windsor Spitfires, totalling 44 goals and 39 assists in 200 games. The Barons’ next game is at home Thursday against the Toronto Marl- ies. Robin Horlock/ News Advertiser photo Headed for home PICKERING — Jessie-Lynn Guignard powers through the 50-metre backstroke course during the recent Winter Swim Fest meet held at the Pickering Recreation Complex. All Pickering needs now is an opponent PICKERING — The Pickering Pan- thers’ second season kicks off Friday. Whom the Panthers play in the first round of the OHA Ontario Provincial Ju- nior ‘A’ Hockey League playoffs was still undecided as of last night. The Wexford Raiders and the Vaughan Vipers were tied with 52 points apiece in the South Conference, however, the Raiders closed out the regular season last night against the lowly Ajax Attack, after the News Advertiser’s deadline. Regardless of last night’s action, the Panthers play their first playoff game Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pickering Recreation Complex. The date and loca- tion of the second game will depend on whom the Panthers play. Pickering sits third in the South Con- ference with 60 points (29-17-1-1). The Panthers played their final regular sea- son game last night against the Legion- aires in Oshawa, after press deadline. The game, from a points perspective, is meaningless as neither team can move up or down in the standings. Last Friday, the Panthers doubled up Oshawa 4-2. “Hopefully, we’ll come out of it un- scathed,” Panther coach John Winder says of last night’s Oshawa game. “If we’re lucky, we can go into the playoffs with no injuries.” Winder added some players are bat- tling colds and could be getting the night off. He’s expecting to give Andrew Dis- sanayake, Ryan Annesley and Cory Bat- tista the game off. “It’s a point where it doesn’t mean a whole lot.” As for Pickering’s first-round oppo- nent, “it looks like Vaughan,” he states. Winder doesn’t have a preference, say- ing, “We’re all so close. We’re all within 10 points.” The Panthers, however, didn’t fare very well against the Vipers this season, losing three of four games. “However, I think you always have excuses for every game you play. The reasons we think we lost are under con- trol,” Winder states. He’s pleased with the third-place fin- ish. “When (general manager) Frank Rob- inson and I took over this team three years ago, we were in eighth place and fighting for a playoff spot. Last year, we finished in fifth. Now, we’re in third and competing with the top teams in our division,” he notes. On Saturday, the Panthers faced a hungry St. Michael’s Buzzers squad, which needed a win to secure first place in the South Conference. Pickering scored a 3-2 overtime win. A.J. Ward and Richard Schofield potted goals in regulation, and Patrick Jobb scored into an empty net with the winner. Despite the loss, St. Mike’s ended up clinching first. Goalie Mark Duchesne was busy, as St. Mike’s peppered him with 55 shots. The Panthers managed to direct 38 shots at the Buzzers’. Panthers ready for playoffs [ Ringette ] Teams hit the ice next week for Silver Ring tournament AJAX — A venerable and popular ringette tournament brings together teams from across Canada here next month. The 34th annual Ajax Silver Ring Tournament reconvenes at the Ajax Community Centre and Village arenas from Feb. 17 to 19. Again this year, the event is national in scope, attracting 78 teams in all age catego- ries from as far away as Montreal, Boucherville, and Rive Sud, Quebec, as well as teams from Calgary and Halifax. All regions of Ontario are also represented, including a solid Dur- ham Region presence. In addition, the tournament hosts a National Ringette League game at the community centre’s Pad 1 on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 2:30 p.m. The game will crown the Ontario champion and also gives the winner a berth in the Canadian Ringette Championships. Minor ringette play- ers wearing their jerseys receive free admission. Tournament organizers have a number of activities planned for the weekend, including ringette mer- chandise, sports photography and art prints, a barbecue and bar, and raffles. Championship games at all age levels are on Sunday. As one of the oldest ringette as- sociations in Canada, the sport has been played in town for more than 35 years. For more information, log on to the Ajax Ringette Association’s web- site at www.ajaxringette.com. [Gymnastics] Pickering gymnasts tumble to top Cup results PICKERING — Three members of the Pickering Athletic Centre Power Tumbling Team turned in win- ning performances at the Second Ontario Cup. Alize Chandler, Rebecca Palen and Ashley Wells competed in the Provincial 1 Women’s 12 plus cat- egory, held in Barrie Jan. 27 to 29. Chandler, in her first-ever com- petition, tumbled her way to a sec- ond-place overall finish and obtained one out of two required qualifying scores to head to the provincials. Palen finished fourth overall and achieved her second of two required qualifying scores. Wells turned in a seventh-place finish and also achieved her second of two qualifying scores. The three athletes are coached by Serena Bono. Pickering author working on her third book By Mike Ruta Staff Writer PICKERING — Chris Pearson likes to stay busy. So when the 15-year Pickering resident retired a few years ago, she found she was very bored. Picking up a leisurely hobby defi- nitely wasn’t on Pearson’s radar screen. “My mind’s too active; I like to accomplish things in life,” says Pear- son, who’s real name is Vera Anne McCallum. So she dove into a whole new ca- reer as an author. Two books later, and with a third on the way, it’s fair to say Pearson has had an active retirement. But don’t ask her where the concept came from for her first book, ‘Jake’s Beginning,’ published last summer “I have no idea,” she says. “It just comes to mind. I couldn’t really tell you. It was just something that kept muttering in my mind.” The starting point was a program Pearson watched on a boy, an or- phan for whom she felt sorry. It was an image that stayed with her, and the story “seemed to mushroom from there.” ‘Jake’s Beginning’ is the story of Jake Hamel, a successful Calgary lawyer who began life in an Eng- lish orphanage. When he refuses to respond to a request for legal aid, his life is about to change forever. Billed as a twisting tale of theft, mur- der, rape, deceit, betrayal, corrup- tion and wrongful convictions, the thriller “spins off into many different directions,” says Pearson. It required numerous trips to the library to re- search legal terms and, without giv- ing too much of the novel away, the Mafia. “They loved it in England when I sent it off to the publishers,” she says. The book can be ordered from Chapters. Her second work is a complete de- parture, a children’s tale in which an- imals talk to themselves. ‘Emma and Her Friends From Bluebell Wood’ is due out in a couple of weeks, and Pearson is in the process of arranging local book signing dates, likely dur- ing the March break. “It’s about a little old lady living in a cottage in Devon in England,” Pear- son says. “She has a little house with a puppy and a cat.” Her third, as yet untitled, is more in the vein of ‘Jake’s Beginning,’ and she’s excited about how it’s progress- ing, describing it as “rather good” in her opinion. Pearson credits her father for set- ting the bar high for her as a child and instilling a solid work ethic. “Since I was a little girl, my father used to push me to do this and do that,” she says. “I guess it’s always stayed with me. I hate to be lazy.” A/P PA GE 12 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ FEBRUARY 8, 2006 H EALTH SYSTEM FOUNDATION 2006 Lottery2006 Lottery WIN a Car & a Cruise for $20 Early Bird Draw 'RAND0RIZE$RAW$ATE-ARCHST s,IBERTY'RAND PM Some restrictions may apply.
