Mr. Thomas wasn’t at the debate, held at the Pickering Recreation Complex, as he was attending a fu- neral. Around 300 people turned out for the event, sponsored by the News Advertiser, Rogers Televi- sion and Durham Radio. Questions came from a media panel and audi- ence members. Vo ter apathy could be addressed by implementing a form of propor- tional representation, according to Green Party hopeful Russell Korus. “Wouldn’t it be great to pick and choose the best ideas of each party. That’s what proportional represen- tation is,” he said. “A sk someone why they vote Con- servative and they’ll tell you all that’s wrong with the Liberals. Ask a Liber- al and they’ll tell you all that’s wrong with a Conservative. It’s the lesser of two evils. Proportional representa- tion will make people more excited. People will feel they really have a say in Parliament.” In the 2004 federal election, “we should have had 13 MPs and we Pickering candidates put things in proportion Pickering supports bid to designate homes By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — A Pickering heri- tage group moved recently to pro- tect the birthplace of the NDP. Heritage Pickering made a pre- sentation at the Jan. 9 Pickering executive meeting asking commit- tee members to endorse its recom- mendation to designate two proper- ties on Whitevale Road as heritage properties. “These homes are the extension of the Whitevale community as they were some time ago,” said Pamela Fuselli, committee chairwoman. The first home is the Willson House, located at 1505 Whitevale Rd. The one-and-a-half storey, brick-clad house was built in 1861 by Casper Willson. Willson family members have played a key role in Pickering’s history. Descendents lived in the home until 2001, when it was bought by Ms. Fuselli and her family. “They are as eager as our com- mittee to see the property desig- nated,” she said of Doug Willson and his wife, Margaret Phyllis Willson, who were in the audience. Ms. Fuselli said the home retains many of its original architectural de- tails. The other home the committee wants designated is the Glen House, at 1690 Whitevale Rd. The home appears to pre-date 1840 and the barn on the property pre-dates the 1860s. “There are many wonderful attri- butes to this home built more than 120 years ago,” Ms. Fuselli said. But it’s real historical significance comes from a meeting held there is 1932. It would make our system more fair.” Kevin Modeste, the New Democratic Party candidate, said “both the NDP and my- self support proportional representation. “It’s the way to go. With a 21st-century reality, it’s time politics and government re- flect our reality.” People have to be chal- lenged. “Voting critically is the best way,” Mr. Modeste noted. In his closing remarks, he added, “Vote critically, not traditionally.” Christian Heritage Party hopeful Kevin Norng also supported proportional rep- resentation. “Those opposed to it are those who stand to lose the most power,” he said. “We need to look for a type that works. There are 14 types. We have to find the best one for Canada. “If we encourage propor- tional representation, people would feel their vote really counts.” Liberal candidate Mark Holland said proportional representation “as a pure sys- tem isn’t fair. As a mixed sys- tem, we have to look at that.” As an MP, he looked into lowering the voting age to 16, adding it’s a “disturbing trend young people don’t vote.” The key, he added, was “g etting young people excit- ed in the process.” The issue of military fund- ing was raised and all the candidates used the question as a chance to comment on the government’s decision not to participate in the Iraqi war. Mr. Modeste said, “It was important for us to stay out of Iraq. The big problem with our military is it’s not equipped to deal with tradi- tional Canadian values.” Mr. Modeste pointed to the military having to borrow planes to fly disaster assis- tance personnel and materi- als to help with tsunami and Pakistani earthquake relief. Mr. Norng stated, “I’m very glad we didn’t go to Iraq. I thing it would have been a big mistake.” He also noted there are regular reports of “obso- lete and technically inferior equipment killing our peo- ple.” “I’m extremely proud our government said ‘no,’” Mr. Holland stated. “We’ve done a remarkable job” equipping troops, he added. Mr. Korus also supported the government’s position. “War should be a last resort. Iraq was a war of choice. I’m proud our government stood up and said ‘no,’” he stated. DURHAM — At one point during a debate Wednesday between candidates in Ajax- Pickering Riding, the topic was voter apathy and ways to get youth more involved in politics. A few minutes later, Issa- belle Oke did just that. Speak- ing French, the 10-year-old Pick- ering girl asked the candidates, “What do you think you really need to change in Canada.” Liberal candi- date Mark Hol- land and New Democratic Party hopeful Kevin Modeste gave part of their answers in French before reverting back to English. Mr. Holland said, “It’s ex- ceptionally important we can communicate with each other.” He wanted to “restore passion” back into politics. Green Party candidate Russell Korus said it was im- portant to focus on “what’s really important in life. We get sidetracked from what’s really important.” He noted that’s why the Green Party takes the envi- ronment so seri- ously. Mr. Modeste said restoring a sense of order in Parliament is necessary. “It’s not a place where you go to act like bad children and get paid for it.” Chris- tian Heritage Party standard-bearer Kevin Norng said he loved the country. “I also love God, who created me,” he said. “His principles and His love created the Can- ada we want.” Also, “honesty, integrity, thrift” have to be brought back into politics. Pickering... First Pickering Place McTeague told to remove by Jan. 20 PICKERING — Dan McTeague’s sign is just too big. The Liberal Pickering-Scar- borough East candidate received a letter Jan. 6 from the City of Pickering explaining his bill- board-size sign on the roof of the building where his campaign of- fice is located is too big and has to be taken down. The City’s sign bylaw limits an election sign at five square metres. City clerk Debi Bentley con- firmed Monday a complaint had been received about the sign and a letter had gone out giving Mr. McTe ague 14 days to remove it; meaning it has to be down Jan. 20, before the Jan. 23 election. Luch Durante, Mr. McTeague’s campaign manager, said Tuesday the letter had been received and they were looking into it. He said it is the same sign that has been used in three previous elections and since the start of this long campaign. “I’m puzzled as to why it comes up as an issue (now),” he said. “I’m definitely going to look into it before it comes down.” He said the letter did cite size as the reason for the sign to come down. “It didn’t grow,” he said. The sign is located on the build- ing at 590 Granite Crt. Ms. Bentley said another sign behind the building, fronting onto the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 401, that spells out Mr. McTeague’s name was also part of the com- plaint. The most common complaint the City gets about elections signs is that they are blocking sightlines. She said candidates are quick to take those down or move them. DURHAM — Durham Regional Police have launched a year-long series of traffic safety initiatives, promising to focus on a variety of road hazards. The Drive to Stay Alive cam- paign began Tuesday morning w ith a preview of Operation in the Zone, a continuation of an effort by police to strictly en- force speed limits and other driving behaviour in school and residential areas. Police armed w ith roadside radar set up near Bowmanville High School, in a preview of a blitz that will start in earnest in March, and again in September when students return to classes. Other initiatives this year will include: • See the Light in January, focusing on traffic signal viola- tions; • Safe Space in February, tar- geting aggressive driving prac- tices such as tailgating; • March’s Equipped for Safety, a series of one-day blitzes fo- cused on vehicle registration, expired plate tags and insurance papers; • Get Connected in April and S eptember, a seatbelt enforce- ment blitz; • Cottage Bound, a safety blitz targeting holiday traffic begin- ning in May; • Operation Speed Racer, which will see cops clamping down on illegal racing activity during the summer months. In addition, officers will be out each month of the year staffing RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) checks, police said. This year’s initiatives are a continuation of last year’s Stay- ing Alive in 2005, a project that aimed to reduce the alarming number of fatalities on Durham’s roads. In 2005, 29 people died in ac- cidents on Durham roadways. Liberal candidate’s election signs ruled too big PICKERING — A dance studio owner and instructor has been charged after a teenaged student told police she had been subjected to sexual advances. Durham Regional Police officers arrested the man Wednesday, cul- minating an investigation that began in December. Police were first con- tacted by family members after the child, 14, disclosed the allegations, investigators said. The girl alleges that between July and October of 2005, when she was a student at the Step In Two Dance Studios and Club Lounge in Picker- ing, she was repeatedly kissed and subjected to inappropriate touch- ing, police said. Vladimir Suanez, 42, of Brock Road in Pickering is charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation and assault. A police investigation continues. Pickering dance instructor charged Labour Party of Toronto, bought the home in 1923 and in June 1932 held a meet- ing of socialist groups there, with J.S. Woodsworth in at- tendance. A resolution was passed at that meeting asking Mr. Woodsworth to form a national socialist conference, which he did later that year out west when he formed the Co-operative Common- wealth Federation, the pre- cursor of the NDP. The home is located in Seaton and is currently owned by the provincial gov- ernment. Councillors were support- ive of the request. “Heritage isn’t something that comes around a second time,” said Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner, adding if the properties don’t get designated they’ll be- come part of the sprawl when Seaton is developed. Mayor Dave Ryan said he’d have reservations about des- ignating the Glen House if it wasn’t government owned. “I would not be as comfort- able if that second property wasn’t owned by the Prov- ince but instead was privately owned,” he said. “If this was a home in private ownership and the owner wasn’t before us supporting the motion I’d have a problem supporting it.” Executive committee passed the recommendation to designate the properties, which will now go to council for final approval. In Ms. Fuselli’s presenta- tion, she said Heritage Pick- ering would also like inter- im controls put in place on Whitevale Road extending from the current Heritage Conservation District bound- ary, to the east of the hamlet of Whitevale, to east of Brock Road. That request is going to be considered at a future meet- ing. Answer: When bitten by the spring construction or renovation bug, even the most ambitious homeowner can be set back by the reality of the design, permit and construction process. Like the old adage about a fi ne wine taking time to mature, a costly construction project is best not rushed. When you consider the fact that you will be enjoying a new addition or home for many years to come, some extra time spent planning and designing your home with your architect will be worth the investment. By the time the snow has cleared in the spring, it may already be too late to fi nish your project before the fi rst winter snowfall if you have not spent time preparing for construction. Time must be allocated for the required phases that every project typically includes, with many variations depending upon the project specifi cs: Design: This is where all projects begin – on the drawing board. The homeowner is typically asked to prepare a “wish list” with their specifi c design requirements. This list can include everything from how many new bedrooms your home will need, to how large the Great Room addition will need to be to accommodate those big family get-togethers. During this phase of the project, local zoning bylaws will be reviewed to confi rm that the project will comply with technical requirements for setbacks from lot lines and lot coverage. Depending on the complexity of the project, design can take from one month for a modest interior renovation to several months or more for a substantial addition or new home design. The process usually involves several meetings to review design options presented by the architect, with time between meetings spent “living with” the design in order to confi rm that it works for you. Approvals: This phase involves getting all of the required permits before you can begin construction. The building permit process can vary depending upon the municipality and will typically range from two to four weeks. If you want to build a larger home or with smaller setbacks than the zoning allows, a minor variance will be required, and you can expect several months for the processing of your fi le. Construction: This fi nal phase is the one that is most challenging for the homeowner because it often involves disruption to their home. After taking the time to select a qualifi ed contractor, the duration of this phase can range from one month for a new enclosed porch addition to six months or more for a substantial renovation/addition or a new home. Working backwards from the date you would like to be enjoying a morning coffee in your new home or addition, the whole process can easily take a minimum of four months. Enjoy that coffee on a cold winter morning, but keep in mind that giving yourself the time to enjoy the process can reduce some of the stress and can lead to a more successful project. While party leaders express all manner of solutions including mandatory minimum sentences and handgun bans for violent, gun-fuelled criminal behaviour, the average Cana- dian may wonder what he or she can do. One way to fight back against crime in your neighbourhood is to use Crime Stoppers. The organization, which takes calls from the public and pro- tects the identity of callers, uses those anonymous tips to help catch criminals. Those who call will not be expected to testify in court. And if a call leads to an arrest, Crime Stoppers will pay a reward to the caller. Crime Stoppers, which started up in the United States in the 1970s, has been in Durham for the past 20 years. In that time there have been 16,000 tips which have led to 2,557 arrests and 6,471 charges. A whopping 2,480 cases have been cleared with $5.7 million worth of property ultimately recovered. In addition, a staggering $48.9 million in illegal drugs has been seized as a result of calls to Durham Crime Stoppers. The trend in recent years has been for more people to get involved in the program. In 2003, Crime Stoppers received 742 calls from the public; that number jumped to 945 in 2004 and hit 1,120 in 2005. People are realizing the program helps deal with crime in their neighbourhoods. The lure of up to $2,000 in reward money also helps generate calls. The program has also been introduced to schools, making it clear to young people that Crime Stoppers is there for them both to be used for tips and as a deterrent to those who may become involved in crime. Getting attention from younger people for the program can only help to increase participation among callers in future. Durham Region Police Constable Sherri Hughes, who is the Crime Stoppers co-ordinator in Durham Region, figures the increase in calls over the years signifies that “people are fed up with crime.” She notes that just over half of all callers receive rewards and “the program is working... people want to do the right thing... they want to help and this is the way to do it.” If you see criminal activity going on, pick up the phone and call 1-800-222-8477. You’ll be glad you did, and so will your neighbours. Candidate’s comments confuse voter To the editor: Thank you for running a Q and A on infrastructure, where you asked the local candidates in the upcoming federal elec- tion whether they supported expenditures for streets and highways. As a commuter living in Ajax, this is a very important topic for me. One of the answers left me confused, however. In his answer, Rondo Thomas said, “No. Infrastructure is the responsibility of provincial and municipal governments.” My confusion comes from a flyer left at my house by Mr. Thomas saying, “Your MP should be working to ensure new infrastructure dollars come to our community so that we can ease traffic congestion,” which I took to mean ‘Yes, I support increased infrastructure spending.’ So, once again, this type of double-speak leaves the voting public confused and uncertain about what the candidates say and mean. I guess it just goes to prove the old anarchist saying, “It doesn’t matter who you vote for, the government always gets in.” Regardless, I’ll vote on Jan. 23. Paul Lewis Ajax Carly courageously fesses up in sharing workplace low points Luckily no one was around the day my bikini top popped open when I was cutting Chuck’s lawn. The majority of the seven seasons I spent running Carly’s Cutting Corpora- tion in Zephyr were uneventful with the exception of that hot summer day, when a wardrobe malfunction could have been catastrophic. It still tops the list as my most embar- rassing workplace moment. In Durham, the stories business lead- ers have shared involve throwing up, near nakedness in public, spilling water and collapsed ceilings. All the good sports that shared their most red-faced moments agreed that it’s good to be able to laugh and learn about the mis- takes afterwards. Of course, the more years the better between the humiliation and now. That always helps ease the pain felt at the time... While working at a pizza parlour on a particularly busy Friday night as a teen, I pulled a giant pizza out of the oven and promptly dropped it cheese-first on the floor. The customer who’d ordered it was standing at the counter watching. On the first day of reporting class at Ryerson, I handed in an assignment having spelled the name of the most fa- mous street in Canada as Young Street, instead of Yonge Street. The article was held up at the front of class and used as an example of what to never, ever do or you’ll immediately fail (mercifully the instructor kept the author anonymous). Most recently, I was trying to help out a local resident contact a very se- nior politician. I wrote back to the frus- trated resident, assuring her that said politician checked his “Crackberry” ob- sessively and would definitely get her note. Problem was I accidently CC’d the politician on the e-mail. And although I was not involved in it, the best headline snafu that still sends the newsroom into laughter said a poli- tician “takes seat, leaves mark.” We were referencing the member of parliament’s impact in the House of Commons. In yoga, this power of three includes the mind, body and spirit. Yoga is the perfect form of exercise, which promotes and encour- ages strength, fl exibility and a healthy well-being. For over 18 years, fi tness has been an extraordinary part of Suzanne Hennig’s life. Her expertise in fi tness instructing, personal training, martial arts training and kickboxing eventually led her to the art of yoga. Today, Suzanne has transformed her knowledge into a new studio known as Power of 3. Suzanne’s training will revolutionize the way you look at health and fi tness. Along with yoga, Power of 3 off ers numerous forms of east- ern techniques such as kickboxing classes, Kshatriya and Bushido; which is a Japanese sword-fi ghting technique that builds muscle, burns calories and increases endurance awareness. Registration for new classes is happening this month. Th ese classes include Seniors Yoga classes, Yogakids Adventure and Bush- ido Cardio. Classes will start for these specialized programs in Feb- ruary. Pow er of 3 has four convenient methods of payment. You can be a part of the Pass Card system, which comes in increments of fi ve classes for $67.50, 10 classes for $110 and 20 classes for $200. Or if a package is not for you, you can pay $15 per class. Suzanne invites you to come and rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit. Th e fi rst class is FREE. Th e process of change is uncomfortable. How do you win? Let the friendly fi tness staff at the Pickering Recreation Complex guide you in making healthy lifestyle choices that are right for you. Drop by to meet Chris, Mike, Tali, and Cecilia. Th ey understand how busy life gets and what it takes to get what you want. Members of the Pickering Recreation Complex who have been successful credit the fi tness staff for encouraging them to set attainable goals, for helping them with exercises that work into their life, and generally making them feel comfortable in a setting that can be quite scary. “I liked the helpful but ‘no pressure’ approach,” says Doug Gray, a Pickering Recreation Complex member and suc- cess story. “Th e decision to exercise is a personal one and there are many fac- tors that contribute to its success. Th e combination of the health club facili- ties and the staff are certainly key com- ponents of this.” Th e knowledgeable, professional and supportive fi tness staff know that not making huge changes is normal for beginners and that to achieve a healthy, balanced life everything counts: choos- ing to come to the gym, choosing to eat all your fruits and veggies and then seeing if you really do want more to eat, and being able to lift a weight two more times than you did last week. Th e Pickering Recreation Complex’s staff believes that as you reach each mini-goal you will feel good about yourself and it will reinforce the fact that you can do it. Success is long-term; it is not a quick fi x. Th ey will support you in the choices you make to enhance your well-being. Susan Steele, a devoted exerciser and success story member says, “Everything that we read about or the experts tell us about exercising is true. It certainly makes you feel better but also gives you a sense of accomplishment when you do something for yourself.” It is no wonder why the Pickering Recreation Complex was the Reader’s Choice Award winner for Best Fitness Club. Its friendly staff , eff ective programs for children, teens, adults and seniors alike are very popular and enjoyable. Whether it is family fi tness or our new 12-week Fatoff program—which begins mid-January—mem- bers are encouraged to continually strive to be their personal best. Often as a beginner, it is important to be provided with information that will help you start a program safely and eff ectively. Th is is why every new member is entitled to a de- tailed group Health Club Orientation that is informative and comfortable. As someone who is a seasoned exerciser, it is important to be in an atmosphere that does not incorporate high-pressure sales tactics or have you waiting in line to use equipment. Since the Pickering Recreation Complex is a 250,000- square-foot facility, there are many op- portunities to try something you have never tried before. Tali Adari newest fi tness staff mem- ber at the Pickering Recreation Com- plex states, “I’ve been working in the fi tness industry for almost a decade and I am so happy to be working for a facility that advocates health, vitality and happiness through exercise and education. Often I would fi nd myself working within a facility that was more interested selling to the people than the people themselves. It is so refreshing to fi nally be in a fi tness environment with accredited, knowledgeable staff whose best interest is helping others achieve their goals!” For more information please contact the Pickering Recreation Complex at 905-683-6582. Th e cur- rent weight-loss paradigm teaches that if you simply eat less and move more, you’ll be smaller. Th at sounds great, except losing weight—and keeping it off —is not that simple. Here are two of the reasons conven- tional diets don’t work and the Curves Six-Week Solution program does. 1. Eating less slows metabolism. Th e second problem with simply eating less is that your body responds by becoming more effi cient. You have a survival mechanism that helps to protect you from starvation and famine. When you begin to eat less, and your body must access its own stored energy, within a few days there is a physiological response. A variety of “starvation hormones” are pro- duced. Th ese have the eff ect of slowing your metabolic rate and conserving en- ergy. Th is explains the slowing of weight loss and the often dreaded plateau of a diet. To make matters worse, if you have no method with which to raise your metabolic rate that has been slowed by dieting, you must stay on a lifelong main- tenance diet. Th is is the requirement of most current weight-loss programs. For- tunately, it’s no longer necessary. Curves has developed a method with which to raise metabolic rate. A second major study has confi rmed these original fi ndings. 2. “Move more” is too simplistic. Strength training helps you protect against muscle loss, even when dieting. A sustained cardio-level workout helps you burn more body fat. It takes a few minutes for your body to begin to access fat as energy. Th e Curves’ specifi c and complete exercise program preserves muscle while burning more body fat. It all sounds so serious in cold, hard science, but hearing the results from someone who has benefi ted directly from Curves’ research brings it all to life. Colleen Asselin, a member of a Pickering Curves location, recently completed the Curves Six-Week Solution class. “I started at Curves shortly after my 32nd birthday in the hope of shedding the weight I gained in the fi ve years prior to the birth of my two wonderful children. At the time, I was also hoping to help myself gain some energy to help me keep up with them. In May 2005, I was about to turn 33 years old and mentioned to my husband that Curves would be holding a Six-Week Solution class - he said to go for it! As a birthday present to myself, I joined the class not knowing what to expect. I didn’t want to disappoint myself, so I set a goal of only losing 10 pounds over the six week period. One week after an- other I was really shocked by the posi- tive results. Not only did I lose the 10 pounds in the six week eff ort, but I also lost 10 and a half inches,” she explains. “By combining the Six-Week Solu- tion with my Curves workout, I’ve now shed 28 pounds and 34 inches! I now weigh two pounds less than I did before I became pregnant with my fi rst child. I cannot express in words how great I feel. Friends now comment on how I look like I’ve lost weight... I even had an uncle ask me if I’ve gotten taller! It’s a sure sign that I’m starting to look like my 20 year-old self again.” Now that Colleen has been a consistent, active member, she be- comes a perfect candidate for the new Curves Advanced Workout to take her to the next level of fi tness. Shifting the Paradigm Th e greatest challenge is for people to think diff erently about diet- ing; that it should be a temporary event after which you should raise your metabolic rate rather than commit to a lifelong maintenance diet. Curves has a better plan, and one that has been proven through re- search. Th ink about it. New thinking about weight loss: The Curves program delivers success. There’s an opportunity for ordi- nary citizens like you to fight law- lessness in your neighbourhood, and your region -- and it’s been here all along. Ja nuary is Crime Stoppers Month, and this year marks the 20th anniversary of the crime- fighting program here in Durham Region. Over the years thousands of tips have led to hundreds of ar- rests and the recovery of millions of dollars worth of property and illegal drugs. And, according Sherri Hughes, Crime Stoppers co-ordinator Dur- ham Regional Police constable, the program is thriving now as never before. The number of calls coming in continues to increase each year, as ordinary citizens take advantage of a program that al- lows them to anonymously pass on information to police, and col- lect rewards when that informa- tion leads to an arrest. The trend is most keenly evi- dent in the past few years: In 2003, Crime Stoppers in Durham received 742 tips, a level that in- creased to 945 in 2004. In 2005, the number jumped to 1,120 calls. That steadily rising number of calls leads Const. Hughes to conclude ordinary citizens see the program as a way of battling crime in their communities. “I think people are fed up with crime and this is their way of fight- ing back,” she said. Established in the United States 30 years ago, Crime Stoppers was envisioned as a way to help citi- zens provide valuable information to police while remaining anony- mous. The concept remains un- changed today; people who call in do not have to identify themselves or testify in court. And awards of up to $2,000 are added incentive. Anonymity is important, be- cause people can fear reprisals for providing information on criminal activity. And Const. Hughes noted that just over half the people who call Crime Stoppers actually col- lect rewards. “It tells me people want to do the right thing,” Const. Hughes said. “They want to help and this is the way to do it.” Since its inception here in 1986, the Durham Crime Stoppers pro- gram has fielded more than 16,000 tips, which have led to 2,557 ar- rests and 6,471 charges, resulting in 2,480 cases being cleared. In ad- dition, $5.7 million worth of prop- erty has been recovered, while po- lice have seized $48.9 million in illegal drugs. And the program forges ahead. Const. Hughes is encouraged at the response since Crime Stop- pers was introduced to regional schools, and there are plans this year to use an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant to film re-enact- ments of crimes for broadcast. Const. Hughes urges citizens to call whenever they suspect crimi- nal activity -- no matter how insig- nificant it may seem. “We have to help the police, and Crime Stoppers is the way to do it,” she said. “The community has a responsibility.” To reach Crime Stoppers, call 1-800-222-8477. Following the Christmas break with his family at their south Ajax home, Groome is excited to get going again. The 19-year-old fresh- man pitcher, after a prolific fall sea- son at the western Maryland com- munity college in McHenry, pitched his way on to the starting rotation for the spring season, which gets under way this month. Manager Eric Hallenbeck used Groome as a starter and in the bull- pen during the fall campaign where the Lakers earned a 10-5 record. “After the fall season I earned a spot in the starting rotation, which is excellent,” says Groome. The freshman pitcher started at the school last September after being offered a scholarship by Hal- lenbeck while playing with the On- tario Bulldogs/Toronto Hawks 16-to 18-year-old all-star baseball squad at a tournament in Florida last sum- mer. “O ne month later, I got a call to come down (to Garrett College) and take a look at the school. I threw in the bullpen for a while for him and he offered me the scholar- ship,” explains Groome. He was also, however, offered a scholarship by Chesapeake College, also in Maryland, but “I felt more comfortable at Garrett, so I chose to go there.” As it turned out, Groome wasn’t the only Ontario pitcher on Hallen- beck’s radar while scouting the On- tario team. Two other pitchers on Groome’s summer team -- Adam Phillips and Adam Zorzit, both of To ronto -- were also signed by the skipper. And, the Canadian-laden pitch- ing staff has, so far, held up well for the Lakers, giving them cause to dream of a record-setting season in the Maryland JUCO conference, that plays at the Division 1 level within the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). “We have the talent and we gelled really well in the fall season,” says Groome, a product of the Ajax Spar- tans Minor Baseball Association. “Our first goal is to win 33 games in the spring season. The school record is 31 wins. We want to win Region XX and go on to the World Series (for junior college baseball).” The Lakers tune up for the spring season by heading to Boca Raton, Florida to compete in the annual Papa John’s Baseball Classic in Jan- uary before beginning the spring season on the road against Chesa- peake College on March 5. Groome spent last semester in general arts, but eventually plans to study journalism. Ron Pietroniro/News Advertiser photo Ajax’s Adam Groome, 19, has earned a starting pitcher’s job when the Garrett College Lakers of Maryland. He hits the field this month for the collegiate spring baseball season. By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — Executing the game plan paid dividends for the Pickering Panthers in chalking up their fourth consecutive victory to start 2006. The fruits of the Panthers’ labour resulted in a solid 5-2 victory over the North Conference’s Stouffville Spirit in OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League action in Stouffville on Thursday night. The Panthers played at the Pick- ering Recreation Complex against the resurgent Seguin (Parry Sound) Bruins on Friday night, with the result unavailable at press time. To day (Sunday), the Panthers play the Ajax Attack for the fifth and final time this season, with game time 3 p.m. at the Ajax Community Cen- tre. Panthers’ head coach John Wind- er insisted his charges be diligent on the forecheck and use a particular breakout system in their own zone to move the puck up ice quickly against Stouffville. The moves were carried out with precision, all which added up to the team’s 24th victory of the season. “We went in with a game plan and it was probably the best my team has executed a game plan. They executed it exactly the way we wanted the boys to do. They re- sponded really well,” says Winder. The coach gave kudos to sec- ond-year forward Greg Riggs and to starting goaltender Mark Duchesne. Riggs was not only a force on the Panthers’ penalty killing unit, but also chipped in with a first-period goal that broke a 1-1 tie and sparked the Panthers to three more goals in the first and second periods. Meanwhile, Duchesne was his usual steady self in recording his 17th win. He faced 34 shots to re- cord the victory. The Panthers’ forward line of A.J. Ward, Justin Fox and Chris Jones also turned in a typically strong per- formance. Winder noted the line combined for two of the nicest goals he’s witnessed this season, com- ing just 37 seconds apart on the same shift in the second period. The goals, by Fox and Ward, gave the Panthers a four-goal cushion entering the third. The four wins to open the year, says Winder, show the team is con- tinuing to build consistency in the runup to the playoffs. “We like to think we’re a con- sistent hockey team. We’re always looking for an identity and we’re proving to be a consistent team. It shouldn’t make a difference who we play. We like to play four lines and get the tempo up and that’s what we’ve been doing game-in and game-out,” says Winder.” Pickering Panthers exorcise Spirit for fourth straight win “ Iwas ready to get out and use my brain again.
