At Monday’s meeting, Pickering council voted 5-2 in favour of putting a question on the ballot next November asking voters if the Government of Ontario should enact a regulation re- quiring the direct election of the chair- man of the Regional Municipality of Durham. Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dick- erson moved the motion, pointing out other regions have an elected chair- man. “It seems to operate quite nicely and it allows for the electorate to pass their collective judgement on how they think their chairs are doing,” he said. Ward 1 City Councillor Kevin Ashe seconded the motion, saying the point of the motion was not to pass judge- ment on how good a job Durham’s regional chairs have done. “The point is accountability. The point is accessibility,” he said. “When we have a job that pays $150,000 and we have a position that has influence on issues before us, it is important we grow up and have accountability.” Coun. Ashe urged his fellow coun- cillors to support the motion, even if they personally didn’t support the direct election of the regional chair. “Even my colleagues who are against the election of the regional chair should The Pickering 44 PAGES ✦ Metroland Durham Region Media Group ✦ WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2005 ✦ Optional delivery $6 / Newsstand $1 PICKERING TOWN CENTREPICKERING TOWN CENTRE UPPER LEVEL SEARS WINGUPPER LEVEL SEARS WING 905.420.0744905.420.0744 *Phone prices available only on subscription to a new 36-month service agreement. **$0 offer applies to new 36-month Family Plan secondary line activations. Shawn Grant, 22, was denied bail during a hearing Friday in Ontar- io Court. Justice Paul Bellefontaine made the ruling after hearing sub- missions by lawyers for the Crown and defence. Mr. Grant was committed to stand trial in Superior Court after a preliminary hearing last week in Os- hawa; a date for the start of the trial has not been set. Evidence presented during that preliminary hearing cannot be re- ported under a court order. Mr. Grant was arrested a few days after a June 11 scuffle at a resi- dence in Pickering in which a man was stabbed. The victim was rushed to hospital with life-threatening inju- ries, police said at the time. Eight-year-old takes on fire chief’s duties By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — Krista DePaulo munched away at her french fries as she recounted her busy morning. She’d worked up quite the appetite filling in for Pickering Fire Chief Bill Douglas. The eight-year-old was the winner of the Fire Chief for a Day con- test and spent the morning of Nov. 25 getting a certificate from Mayor Dave Ryan, meeting firefighters at Hall No. 5, riding in a fire truck to school and then overseeing a fire drill there. Before heading back to school, Kris- ta enjoyed lunch at McDonald’s, which sponsors the contest with the City of Pickering. Of the many things she got to do, she was able to pick out the best part of her morning. “Riding in the fire truck,” she said. “Cause I never got to ride in a fire truck in my whole life. I’d only gotten to see inside a fire truck.” Krista got to sit up front, which pro- vided her with a great view on the short ride from the fire hall at Brock Road and Bayly Street to Frenchman’s Bay Public School. Just sitting in the front seat of a vehicle was a big deal for Krista, said her mother Laurie De- Paulo, because she is too young to ride in the front seat of the family car. Her mother tagged along on Kris- ta’s big day, snapping the occasional photo. Wa rd 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner attempted to bring forward a motion at council that would have sup- ported the non-confidence stance ad- opted last Thursday by a group of doc- tors at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. It followed the announcement that obstetric and pediatric services are being temporarily transferred from Ajax to Centenary. Council needed a vote to deal with the notice of motion and hear a presentation from hospital officials. Needing a two- thirds majority to pass, it lost with only four councillors in favour. Still, the mo- tion was informally discussed in other business. Some councillors were concerned with the wording and “rhetoric” in the motion, which included statements such as “these professionals have been subjected to ongoing pressures for the past five years as a result of the actions of the administration and board who have systematically downsized services...” Ward 1 City Councillor Kevin Ashe stated his support for the hospital. “I have absolute confidence in the doctors at Rouge Valley, I have absolute confidence in the nurses at Rouge Val- ley, I have absolute confidence in the board at Rouge Valley, and I have abso- lute confidence in the administration at Rouge Valley, but I disagree with their decision,” he said. With the motion not being dealt with, Coun. Ashe said some changes could be made to it before it comes back to coun- cil Dec. 19. “Take the two weeks to get a mo- tion that lowers the temperature a bit in terms of adjectives used,” he said. Coun. Brenner said the day of the an- nouncement was “a very dark day in this REFLECTING ON A COLD DAY Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo PICKERING — A worker tends to the front glass panels of the Ontario Power Generation building at 889 Brock Rd. A Grade 12 student at J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate in Ajax, An- drew is one of 40 people from around the world participating in the Stu- dents on Ice scientific expedition to Antarctica, Dec. 27 to Jan. 10. During the voyage, for students ages 14 to 19 and teacher chaperones, participants complete hands-on research activi- ties, such as taking and analyzing ice samples, hear expert lectures and go on excursions to wildlife settings, remote communities and research stations. “There’s not a lot of time for sleep- ing,” said Andrew, adding their hotel will be the ship. “Everyone I talked to said, ‘you’re going to be freezing down there,’ but really it’s going to be 24-hour sun- shine,” he said. “That should definitely be interest- ing.” He added the temperature will be about 0 C. Although Andrew has travelled the world, he’s never been to Antarc- tic, and as a geography student, he’s done a lot of research and reading on global warming. Andrew completed an application process before being chosen as one of the participating students. But, with the learning experience comes a price tag of almost $11,000, of which Andrew still has $4,000 left to find. To come up with the money, he’s created and illustrated a polar year calendar with information on cli- mate change. Black and white copies are $10 each and coloured ones are $20. Businesses and organizations can also sponsor the trip. By supporting the expedition, resi- dents will help him learn more about global warming impacts, he says. “It’s going to affect them all one day, if not them, their kids,” said An- drew. Students on Ice is an international organization offering learning expe- ditions to Antarctica and the Arctic to inspire educational opportunities and increase awareness of the Earth’s global ecosystem. Andrew’s been told the trip puts the sensitivity of the environment into perspective. Trip sponsors receive a tax re- ceipt for contributions of $2,000 or more, made possible because of the organization’s partnership with the Royal Canadian Geographic Society, a non-profit educational organiza- tion. Company names and web links will also be posted on the Students on Ice website. For more sponsorship information or to buy a calendar, contact Andrew at acaprio@canada.com or 905-427- 9967. AJAX AND PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER There’s lots more news online at durhamregion.com N uclear part of equation, energy alliance hears By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer DURHAM — Any announcement on additional nuclear reactors at the Darlington station probably won’t be made until February at the earliest. Ontario Energy Minister Donna Cansfield said a report on how the Province should address it’s electricity needs will be released this Friday, Dec. 9. Over the next two months, the gov- ernment plans to study the document, being prepared by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA). “When the house is back (in Febru- ary), hopefully we’ll have some deci- sions we can give to the general pub- lic,” she stated in an interview. Ms. Cansfield was in Oshawa last week, guest speaker at the Durham Strate- gic Energy Alli- ance breakfast. It was her sec- ond trip to Dur- ham in less than a week, as she also attended a Nov. 25 ceremo- ny celebrating the refurbishment of a reactor at the Pickering nuclear sta- tion. The government, she told an audi- ence of about 300, is committed to a diverse supply mix, with the exception of coal. The Liberal government has pledged to phase-out coal-fire energy production starting in 2007. Clarington and Durham councils have passed motions urging the Prov- ince to build more nuclear reactors on the Darlington site. “Since Day 1, we’ve addressed sig- nificant energy challenges left to us by previous governments. All of them,” she stated. “In the next 15 years, we have to replace 80 per cent of the gen- erating capacity. “In the energy business, 15 years is like tomorrow. It’s not a long time.” Ms. Cansfield noted since the gov- ernment took power in 2003, “our ca- pacity has decreased eight per cent, but consumption has increased six per cent. “A strong, growing, prosperous economy can’t be on tender hooks over supply. Our energy program is designed to ensure Ontario remains competitive, fair and transparent,” she said. The program has three “broad com- ponents,” she noted, including build- ing new generation, maximizing the energy that’s produced and “building a culture of conservation in the prov- ince. We’re moving aggressively on all of these fronts.” The OPA report is “based on a diver- sity of supply,” Ms. Cansfield stated. “With diversity will come stability in our energy future and the bottom line, the key to our economy, is to keep the lights on. Diversity of supply is critical as we move forward.” Ontario is building “more new gen- eration than any other jurisdiction in North America,” she added. Last month, projects totalling 3,000 megawatts were announced. While new generation is needed, conserving the amount of power used is also important, she said. PRECEPT SE LXR ing Mayor Ryan at council chambers. She had been looking forward to this the most, and he presented her with a certificate and her own Pickering Fire Services jacket complete with an au- thentic patch on the right sleeve. From there it was on to the fire hall for a tour and to meet the firefighters. “They said I’m allowed to boss them around,” she said. Next it was time for the ride to school where, as she walked down the hall, some students saluted the fire chief dressed all in pink, except for her black jacket and white sneakers. “I got to go to my school and when I was at my school I got to ring the fire alarm,” she said. “I got to make sure they got out in time and then I told them to go back in.” The winner of the contest is deter- mined by a draw, with each Pickering student receiving a ballot at school. This is the second year for the contest. Steve Fowlds, a fire inspector, said it’s part of the force’s public education program. “Kids are a great group because they take the information back home and to other kids,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun and the kids love it.” Although she enjoyed her morning, Krista isn’t considering a career in fire services. She wants to be a paleontolo- gist. “It’s a person who works with dino- saurs,” she said. ✦ Fire from page A1 Fire chief’s job gets ringing endorsement from Krista endorse this and let the public speak,” he said. Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner agreed. “What we’re actually doing is engaging the public,” he said. “If, in fact, the public is to say ‘yes, there should be direct election,’ then that will guide council to follow the will of the people.” Wa rd 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson voted against the motion. He cited concerns with represen- tation, saying how would an elected chairman represent the issues of the north fairly when there are so many more votes to be won in other areas. He also has concerns with having an elected regional chairman who would be more concerned with winning votes than representing the region. Mayor Dave Ryan also didn’t sup- port the motion. Wa rd 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean looked at the issue a different way. He thought if the regional chair- man was appointed from the group of elected regional councillors the mo- tion wouldn’t be necessary. “This would not be before us tonight because people would feel secure that the chairman is an elected official,” he said. ✦ Pickering from page A1 Pickering votes for question community for health care. “I believe that decision flies in the face of every commitment that has ever been made to our residents,” he said. His motion asked that the de- cision to remove the services effec- tive Dec. 14 be re- versed within five days of the mo- tion passing. The hospital made the deci- sion to temporar- ily consolidate services because of a shortage of pediatricians at the Ajax facility and the safety concerns that come from doctors performing births without that specialized backup. Mayor Dave Ryan also voted against hearing the motion. “I too am angry,” he said. “Anger is not a luxury we can afford. We have to address this collectively in the commu- nity and with the administration and the board.” He offered to facilitate a meeting with staff, the board, and administration from both sites to work towards a solution. In an interview after the meeting Hume Martin, hospital chief executive officer and president, shared some of what he had hoped to tell council. He said for two years the majority of pediatric coverage at Rouge Valley has been done by physicians who are not active staff and that comes at a premium cost. The hospital has been willing to pay that cost in order to offer the service and ensure patient safety, but the shortage is just too great now and the hospital had to make a decision, he said. “We could, in theory, provide a service without pediatric backup, but we would be obliged to let women and families know that,” he said, adding obstetricians at the hospital have said they wouldn’t practice without the backup. “It’s a patient safety issue, it’s real,” he said. “It’s simply a matter of not having pe- diatricians. Period.” ✦ Very from page A1 ‘Very dark day’ for city Kevin Ashe A/P PA GE 6 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ DECEMBER 7, 2005 T here is a new website available that purport- edly hooks up people looking to carpool. I initially thought this was a pretty good idea. But, the more I thought about it, the ickier it became. Isn’t it kind of like an auto- mobile Lavalife? I mean, I don’t always like sharing my car with friends, let alone complete strangers. And let’s face it; people aren’t always exactly forth- coming over the Internet. What do you do, for instance, when “Fit, young biz exec, seeking lift to King and Bay” turns out to be 400-pound Louie, a 45-year-old guy who manages the Subway across from Commerce Court, lives with his mom and can’t even spell anti-perspirant? Keep in mind this service is primarily for commuters like me, who routinely spend anywhere from one to three hours a day getting to and from work. Remember, one hour of normal time is four hours in annoying jerk time. That’s not even factoring in rush hour and traffic jam de- lays. When we were living in Thornhill, my wife and I once drove an acquaintance home from a downtown theatre en- gagement. The guy seemed totally normal. But seemingly normal people often turn into morons the moment you put them in a car. This fellow had a particularly bad case of “leaning-forward-from-the- middle-of-the-backseat-and- not-shutting-up-itis.” He was one of those peo- ple, I guess, who simply can- not stand silence in a car. And so he blathered. He had something to say about ev- erything. “Boy this road is bumpy huh? Did you know that Tar- mac comes from the words Tar and MacAdam, the name of the guy who invented it? A lot of people think it’s the same as asphalt, but they’re mistaken...” Eventually, realizing we had a problem, we subtly turned up the volume on the radio, but he just matched it with his own. Next, we stopped acknowl- edging his comments with our head-nods or “Uh-huhs.” He didn’t care. He verbally bulldozed his way over any and all conventions of polite conversation. He droned on and on, filling the confines of the car to stifling with his own hot air. Soon we didn’t even look at him. That didn’t slow him down a whit. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. To this day he is the only human being I have ever seen my wife yell the words “Shut up!” at. Around about the 401 she lost it. Had I not been lulled into stupefaction by the constant stream of inan- ity from the backseat I might have seen it coming and per- haps intervened. Her fingernails were dig- ging gouges into the steering wheel and her jaw muscles clenching and unclenching like someone trying desper- ately not to vomit. Then, sud- denly, with the intensity of a cobra striking, she snapped her head around. Her angry face inches from his jowly, blabbering puss, she let him have it. I can’t be sure, but I think, had we not been in the mid- dle of three lanes of 100-ki- lometre-an-hour traffic, she would have pulled over and kicked his irritating butt out of the vehicle too. As it was, her message was so frightening that neither he nor I spoke another word for the remainder of the trip. Follow Neil’s BLOG: drinfo.ca/croneblog.html Speak up to save obstetrics To the editor: Re: ‘Doctors lose confidence in hospital,’ Dec. 4. It’s a shame to learn that Rouge Valley Ajax and Picker- ing hospital is having to close its pediatrics ward due to “a lack of pediatricians”. As a resident of Pickering, I ask our leaders and decision- makers of both the hospital, Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan, and the Minister of Health, George Smitherman, how do you sit back and allow a growing region like Durham to have health services taken away? Isn’t this the reason why we were paying hefty health taxes in order to ensure adequate medical facilities are main- tained? From what I read in the ar- ticle, there has been ongoing problems for awhile at this fa- cility. I am surprised that the final straw is just to close the unit and move elsewhere. I urge residents of Pickering and Ajax and others to rally together and get this decision reversed and resolved once and for all. Province must lead on waste policies Municipalities trying to address problem need guidelines You can’t blame Greater Toronto Area municipal politicians for worrying about what to do with the four tonnes of trash produced in the GTA each year. They realize the option of shipping the garbage to Michigan landfills is not a long-term solution to a problem that won’t go away. In fact, the Michigan garbage plan could be halted within a few months should U.S. legislators decide to close the international border to trash haulers. GTA politicians recently took their concerns about garbage to the provincial Ministry of the Environment, which has the final say when it comes to trash legislation. But a spokesman for the min- istry, who attended a Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton Mayors and Chairs meeting at Durham Region headquarters in Whitby, had little to say about the issue. That didn’t sit well with local leaders who feel the Province must show the way in helping to find solutions for the burgeoning gar- bage problem. The issue is complex and so are the solutions. Local landfills have been filled by decades of trash dumping and the desire to find new sites is rife with “not in my backyard” strife. An attempt by Durham, in concert with York and Peterborough, to develop a new way to get rid of waste -- such as through incin- eration -- will take many years to implement. It will require the necessary environmental assessment in addition to many other approvals and would be available by 2012 at the earliest. Even then, there’s no guarantee the Province would approve such an idea. That’s what it comes down to -- getting direction from the Prov- ince that will provide clear guidelines for municipalities which are trying to deal aggressively with an ongoing problem. The Province, as it is now doing with Ontario’s energy concerns for the future, must take trash seriously and prepare a report that deals with long-term waste issues. Either new landfill sites must be developed or new ways found to dispose of waste. While it will be up to municipalities to follow through on any provincial guidelines, the local levels of government do need a sensible, practical long-term plan. Only the Province can adequately address that issue. Hospital decision must be reversed To the editor: Re: ‘Doctors lose confidence in hospital,’ Dec. 4. What shoddy and uncon- scionable treatment of the citizens of Ajax, Pickering and Whitby by the hospital and the Ontario government. To close maternity and re- lated services at our Ajax and Pickering hospital is mad- ness. Why does Rouge Valley Centenary have access to the needed pediatric staff and we, a sister to Centenary, do not? The region is growing expo- nentially with young fami- lies and they will be denied the ability to deliver the new Durham citizens in their local hospital. We have suffered the clo- sure of Whitby hospital and now this. Does the govern- ment realize the possibility of a further demand on our emergency services as people try to get into Scarborough for an untimely delivery and call an ambulance for assistance. I am a mother, a grand- mother and a health-care worker and this affects me on a personal and professional level. This is disgusting treat- ment of the citizens of Dur- ham Region and it must not be allowed to go forward. Sue Masters, Ajax Lack of staff ‘not an excuse’ To the editor: Re: ‘Doctors lose confidence in hospital,’ Dec. 4. I am shocked and dismayed that some bureaucrat finally got his or her way and has suc- ceeded in closing the mater- nity ward at the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. He or she must be delighted they finally succeeded in their mission. What department is next? Perhaps the whole facility? As an Ajax resident for almost 40 years, it looks like the hospital may not be fully functional when I need it the most. Inability to find adequate staff is not an excuse. This smells of political bureaucra- cy and lack of effort. My daughter was expect- ing to use this facility in the very near future. As of today she hasn’t even been present- ed with an alternative. I am sure one will come once the gamesmanship has ended. Bill Watson Ajax P PA GE A7 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ DECEMBER 7, 2005 AT TEND PUBLIC MEETINGS AT CITY HALL All meetings are open to the public. CITY OF PICKERING PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE #2 Pedestrian Bridge Over Highway 401 Schedule ‘C’ Class Environmental Assessment The City of Pickering is currently undertaking a Class Environmental Assessment for a pedestrian bridge that would provide a barrier free connection from the south side of Highway 401 at the Pickering GO Station to the north side of Highway 401 in the vicinity of the Pickering To wn Centre. The Study is being conducted in compliance with Schedule C of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (June 2000), which is approved under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. Public Open House #1 was held on October 19, 2005. Information was exchanged between the public, government agencies, other stakeholders, and the Project Team regarding the Study scope and issues, the problem/opportunity statement, alternative ways of crossing Highway 401, and the preferred solution of constructing a pedestrian bridge over Highway 401. Public Open House #2 will provide the public with an opportunity to review and discuss alternative design concepts and components for the pedestrian bridge, their evaluation, and related environmental considerations. This will assist the Project Team in determining what the bridge will look like (form and architectural features), how it will connect to grade at either end, and how it will operate (functional features, amenities, and green technologies). Public comments obtained at the meeting will be incorporated into the final Study recommendations and design decisions, which will be documented in an Environmental Study Report (ESR). It is anticipated that the ESR will be completed in early 2006, and a Notice of Completion will be published at that time. Display material for the Study will be available for viewing in the Pickering City Hall Lobby from December 12 through 15, 2005. [ Hockey ] Durham Lightning blank Avalanche DURHAM — The Durham Lightning padded their lead atop the National Women’s Hockey League standings with a win over the Quebec Avalanche in La Belle Province on the weekend. Standout goaltending by Desirae Clark, who turned aside 31 shots en route to her third shutout of the season, enabled the Lightning to hold off the Avalanche 2-0 on Sunday. The two teams were to have played on Saturday, but the game was postponed. The Lightning hosted the Oakville Ice at the Ajax Community Centre on Tuesday night after press time. The Lightning opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Teresa Mar- chese and then withstood a barrage of Quebec shots in the third period as the Avalanche tried in vain to net the tying goal on Clark. Team captain Joanne Eustace put the game away with an insurance marker late in the third. Visit durhamregion.typepad.com/the_ohl/ Barrington wins one for coach Pickering boxer earns provincial junior title; headed to nationals in Quebec next month By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — Marlon Barrington wasn’t just boxing for himself when he captured the gold medal at the recent Ontario Open Junior and Senior Boxing Championships in Sarnia. He dedicated his junior 91-kilogram weight class gold to his longtime coach, Preston Roberts at the Liverpool Boxing Club, who’s been with him every step of the way through his five-year career. Roberts’s influence, says Barrington, is what has kept him in the fight game, and inspired him to achieve his current provincial title. “I was very happy, not only for my- self, but for my coach who’s ill right now,” says the 18-year-old. “He had a biopsy and he hasn’t got the results back yet. He doesn’t think he’ll be in it (boxing) too much longer. “I dedicated it to him. I gave him the medal. He tried to give it back, but I wouldn’t let him.” Barrington won his provincial title over Brandon Hrytzak of the Up- town Boxing Club, with the Pickering boxer moving up a weight class to 91 kilograms. After winning the first two rounds, Barrington had some problems with Hrytzak in the third, seeing his eight-point lead dwindle to four. In the fourth, however, Barrington picked it up to win convincingly on points, 39- 27. “I gave up 10 pounds to fight him, but I beat him on all three score cards,” says Barrington. Barrington says it hasn’t been easy to work his ring training around his work and school. A Grade 12 student at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering who also works part-time at Wa l-Mart, he still managed to train 10 hours a week in preparation for provin- cials. Now, Barrington will be part of On- tario’s junior team heading to the Junior National Amateur Boxing Champion- ships in St-Hyacinthe, Que. from Jan. 26 to 29. He’s confident another gold medal is within his grasp. “A lot of training needs to be done and I’ve heard that there’s a lot of good competition (in his weight class), but I’m pretty confident,” he says. In his five years in boxing, Barrington’s entered the ring 25 times, posting a 15-7 record. His three other bouts were exhi- bition fights, which automatically count as a draw. Pickering Panthers keep unbeaten string intact Tyler Melancon P anthers’ Postscript The Panthers’ newest acquisi- tion, forward Cory Battista, didn’t get his first start in the Pickering lineup against his old team, the Stouffville Spirit, on Friday as ex- pected. Panthers’ head coach John Winder notes he had a change of heart about inserting Battista into the lineup, saying he hadn’t been ac- tive in two weeks. Battista did, however, land in the Panthers’ lineup in Seguin against the Bruins, but made a quick exit after receiving a checking-from-be- hind minor penalty that also included a game misconduct, in the first pe- riod... The Seguin game also marked a rare start for backup netminder Bryan Eustace, as Mark Duch- esne has been on fire in earning six wins in a row before Friday’s tie with Stouffville... The Panthers called up Ajax- Pickering Raiders midget ‘AAA’ play- er Brent Shearer for Saturday’s game in Seguin. He contributed solid play, along with an assist on Justin Fox’s game-winning marker... Juniors stretch streak to eight games By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — With several Picker- ing Panthers down and out with injuries, two others stepped up to fill the void in the team’s weekend games. With solid contributions from Josh Domingues and Tyler Melancon, the limping Panthers pushed their unbeaten streak to eight games with a tie and a win, thus preserving their current status as the hottest team of late in the OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League. With no fewer than five players out of the lineup for Saturday’s tilt in the Parry Sound region against the upstart Seguin Bruins of the North Conference, the Pan- thers scored an improbable 7-5 victory. The Panthers (17-10-1-1) started the weekend with a 5-5 draw with the Stouffville Spirit at the Pickering Recreation Com- plex on Friday evening. In Saturday’s game, the Pan- thers trailed 3-1 after the first pe- riod, but roared back in the second period to tie the score at 4-4 before the second intermis- sion. Pickering outgunned Seguin in the third, scoring three goals, including an empty netter by Justin Fox for his second goal of the game. The victory over Seguin, to a large degree, came as a result of solid play by the two Panthers’ rookies. Melancon led the way with a four-point perfor- mance, including a hat trick. Meanwhile, Domingues was equally impressive with a pair of goals. Panthers head coach John Wind- er praised the work of Melancon and Domingues, as well as Fox and diminu- tive forward Greg Riggs, who were also effective in the weekend games. “We got excellent work out of Tyler Melancon, Greg Riggs and Justin Fox. They really stepped it up, especially Mel- ancon, who got extra ice and he showed (he deserved it). He’s really coming into his own. He’s playing good hockey right now,” says Winder. Of Domingues, Winder says the for- mer captain of the Markham Waxers midget ‘AAA’ squad showed his leader- ship abilities in Saturday’s game. “He got us going,” says Winder. “He knew we were down and he stepped it up. He acted like a captain. I can see why he was the captain of his team last year.” Out of the lineup for Saturday’s game were Chris Jones (strained knee), Todd Hosmer (slight concussion), Andrew Dissanayake (bruised liver) and Brett Connolly (ankle). Early in Saturday’s game, captain Ryan Annesley was in- jured on a slash, and didn’t return as a precaution. He’s expected to be OK to go to the Canadian junior ‘A’ prospects game in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Some of the players, says Winder, will miss tonight’s (Wednesday) home game against the Couchiching Terriers at the complex at 7:30 p.m. All are expected back for Friday’s contest in Toronto against the St. Michael’s Buzzers, which the Panthers are chasing for second- place in the South Conference stand- ings. Winder points out his charges blew two two-goal leads in Friday’s tie with Stouffville. He did acknowledge, how- ever, that the steady stream of injuries suffered in the game didn’t help mat- ters. “We weren’t able to hold them off. But, we were definitely getting a lot of injuries. With that in mind, we weren’t too disappointed (with the draw).” The Panthers are also in action on Sunday when they host the Aurora Ti- gers at the complex at 6:30 p.m. Walter Passarella/ News Advertiser photo Stride for stride PICKERING — Pickering Panthers’ Ryan Wilkinson, right, attempts to separate an Oshawa player from the puck during minor bantam ‘AA’ action at the recent Oshawa Crow’s Hockey Tournament. The Lightning battled their way through earlier contests with a 5-3 semifinal victory over the Hamilton Hawks and a quarter-final win of 3-1 over Vaughan. DURHAM — Students across Ontario are learning more about the Under- ground Railroad and African-Canadian culture thanks to an Uxbridge author, Oshawa author, drummer and storytell- er. Lynette Roy, of Uxbridge, is the author of the Canadian Heroes Series, work- books which provide detailed informa- tion about famous Canadians for stu- dents from Grade 6 through high school. Her latest is Underground Railroad Sto- ries of Courage, Determination and Dis- cipline. Oshawa’s Dr. George Blake, a retired clinical psychologist, has contributed a chapter, entitled The Psychology of Africa Drumming. Other contributors include Tessa Benn-Ireland and Bryan Prince. The book is part of Uxbridge’s bicentennial celebrations for 2006. Roy explains the book deals with the legendary system by which slaves from the southern United States escaped to freedom in Canada. One of the people discussed in the book is Uxbridge-born abolitionist Stewart Taylor, who left for the United States to find a job. A Quak- er, he eventually met John Brown, who intended to free the American slaves by force. In 1859, Taylor took part in Brown’s attack on the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry and was killed. Brown was captured, tried for treason, hanged and later regarded as a hero and martyr by abolitionists. The connection of the abolitionist movement to Durham Region is one many people aren’t aware of and one Roy is proud to make known. Other people included in the book are Abraham Lincoln, Dr. Anderson Abbott, the first Canadian-born Black doctor to graduate from the University of Toronto and a surgeon in the American Civil War and Elijah McCoy, whose family fled to Canada along the Underground Rail- road and who patented 72 inventions, including the lawn sprinkler. Roy said the idea for the book came after she’d made a presentation about the railroad at an Ontario high school. She was del- uged with questions and decided on a book tailored to students. In her introduction, Roy, a native of Trinidad, said the stories have special significance for her. In an interview, she said people everywhere have reason to thank the abolitionists and slaves who fought in many ways for freedom. “You can see the dream realized, all the people who have benefited from their efforts,” she said. She’s made presentations to Dur- ham schools and more are coming up. There’s also another book on the topic coming out soon, she said. Blake said he is proud to be part of the book and pass on some detailed infor- mation about drumming which Blacks brought to North America from Africa. “The drum is traditionally a part of everyday life and... the religious life of the people,” he said. But drumming in North America was seen as pagan by the Christians, who tried to suppress it. It survived, although it became more universal, with women welcome to take part, he said. In Af- rica, the tradition was men drummed, women danced, he said. Roy is working on more books in the series. Still to come are books on artist Robert Bateman, author Pierre Berton and former Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau.
