Monday night council approved the first increase to taxicab fares in almost five years and thanked the City’s hard-working drivers for doing the “thankless job.” The drop fee is to rise to $2.75 from $2.45, starting Nov. 15, while the additional fare rate is going to $1.80/kilometre from $1.30. This brings the price of a five-kilometre trip to $11.65, up from $8.95. Many councillors believe the in- crease is overdue. “There has not been an increase in the industry in the city since 2001,” said Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner. “These members of our community are receiving in- comes well below the poverty line and well below what they would in another business.” As a member of Pickering’s Taxi- cab Advisory Committee, Coun. Brenner has heard from drivers about their difficulties and said driv- ers take home just $1,500 a month on average. Drivers came out to Monday’s meeting to express their support and for the recommendation. Surinder Kumar talked about how rates have stayed the same while his costs have increased over the years. “Not only has gas prices gone high, but my insurance has gone up 20 to 30 per cent,” he said. He pointed out even after the last increase in February 2001, Pickering drivers were still behind the rest of the Greater Toronto Area. Through the wind and the cold, the prayers and the poems, the jokes and the applause he did his duty and stood tall at the cenotaph in Esplanade Park as close to 300 people came out to celebrate Remembrance Day. Daniel has been a member of the Pickering air cadets for six years, but this was his first time as honour guard. “I always wanted to be up on the cenotaph because it means more than being back in the crowd with the rest of the ca- dets,” he said. The 856 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron participates in Pickering’s Remembrance Day ceremony every year, but this was the first they’ve been to the ceremony actually on Nov. 11 (there was also a ceremony on Sunday). Daniel was glad to see so many students; he’d like to see more schools come out. “It’d be better if they brought all the schools here, then there’d be more people,” he said. There was a mixed crowd: seniors and babies, politicians and students, and veterans and Royal Canadian Legion mem- bers. The group of concerned res- idents, staff and physicians is planning meetings in Ajax, Pick- ering and Whitby in an effort to get as many people involved as possible in the fight to keep and expand services at the local site of the Rouge Valley Health System. “We want to stress the point that we need the services at the Ajax-Pickering hospital,” said Yvonne Bosch, co-chairwoman of the group. “We want to keep all the ser- vices we have now and we don’t want to lose the hospital.” The sessions are going to give the public the chance to ask questions and give the group the chance to share information about how to show support for the hospital redevelopment, for example. On the redevelopment issue, which the hospital and commu- nity are now waiting for provin- cial approval for after raising the community’s share of the funds, Ms. Bosch said they have written a sample letter and copies will be available at the sessions for people who want to send a letter to Health Minister George Smi- therman or Public Infrastructure Renewal Minister David Caplan, but aren’t sure what to say. Other issues the group has concerns about is the continu- ing rumours about the transfer of services to the Centenary site in Scarborough. “You can’t sit back and not do anything,” Ms. Bosch said. “If we don’t make noise we may just slowly die.” The sessions are in Ajax Tues- day, Nov. 15 at the Royal Cana- dian Legion, 111 Hunt St.; in Pickering Tuesday, Nov. 22 at the Pickering Civic Complex, 1 The Esplanade, in the council chambers; and in Whitby Tues- day, Nov. 29 at the Whitby Public Library, 405 Dundas St. West, in Room 1B. All sessions begin at 7 p.m. For information, call Ms. Bosch at 905-683-0832. Parade marshal Eric Lightowler thought it was great to see so many peo- ple out after the smaller turnout Sunday. “We don’t want people to get wet, but we didn’t cancel it,” he said. “They didn’t cancel the war for us guys.” This service held a little something extra for the veteran who fought in Italy in the Second World War. He pointed out it was the 11th time he marshalled on the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month. Despite taking care of her two young grandchildren, May Closs made it out for most of the ceremony. She bundled up four-year-old Carlene Closs and five- month old Rowan to bring them with her. She said even though they’re too young to fully understand she thought it was important for them to be there. “It’s an emotional thing,” she said. “It’s important to show the veterans who are here that we haven’t forgotten.” Legion Branch 606 president Wayne Aston believes people are starting to for- get or they don’t know the significance of Remembrance Day and the poppy. “One only has to go out there and sell poppies to see the diverse attitude of the Canadian public towards the poppy. I think it’s time we educate new Canadi- ans and old Canadians about the impor- tance of the poppy,” he said. “It’s not just the responsibility of legion members to educate the public or schools to educate the public or politicians, it is the respon- sibility of every Canadian to educate oth- ers about the importance of the poppy and Remembrance Day.” ✦ See Lightowler, Page 1 cent believe drivers deserve it. Fellow driver Kewal Manoch said times have been tough and they’re not getting any better. “In the past four years my insurance has gone up 100 per cent,” he said. “We are told it’s going to be 25 per cent more in the next year.” He pointed out other municipalities in the GTA, including Whitby and Toronto, have approved increases recently. In Toronto, a 10-kilometre trip is going up to $17.50 from $15.50. Wa rd 1 City Councillor Kevin Ashe worried about the impact on seniors and others on fixed incomes. “People who use this service are often using it as a necessity, not as a privilege,” he said. “I do have concerns that our com- munity and our public will be impacted by this, but I am comfortable there was opportunity to comment.” Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles suggested looking at regular increases to avoid a large increase every four or five years. “More frequent small increases might be the way to go,” he said. The increase passed unanimously. ✦ See Pickering, Page 1 Pickering cabbies battle rising costs Lightowler marshals his resources Danielle Milley, above, Mike Pochwat,/ News Advertiser photos Above, marshal Eric Lightowler took extra pride in Friday’s Pickering Remembrance Parade in that it was his 11th such time. We can help you out. The annual Santa Claus Fund recently kicked off its good work, bringing together the generosity of Greater Toronto Area residents with the needs of thousands of young children who face the real prospect of not receiving a gift this holiday season. While the fund is celebrating its 100th year since its begin- nings at The Toronto Star, this is the News Advertiser’s second year of involvement. It didn’t take long for us to realize just how great the need is here in Ajax and Pickering and across the GTA. Imagine Santa’s warehouse, filled from floor to ceiling and wall to wall with 45,000 brightly coloured boxes. Imagine volunteers working feverishly to sort and pack and make sure every box is ready for delivery in December. Imagine the look of joy, relief, and so often overwhelming gratitude as volunteers turn over the gifts to our neighbours. Ye s, Virginia, there are dozens of Santa Clauses working hard right here in Ajax and Pickering. Through the donations of Ajax and Pickering residents in 2004, we were able to deliver 1,000 boxes to boys and girls up to 12 years old. Across the GTA the number of children with a present to open was 45,000. This year just as many children and their families find themselves in financial straits they are work- ing hard to overcome. They need some assistance to get back on their feet and the gift boxes do make a difference. Inside kids will find a sweater, socks, mittens, a hat, book, toy, candy and a toothbrush and toothpaste for kids four to 12. Babies receive two sleepers, candy for mom and dad and a toy. The items are all new and bought from manufacturers at great cost savings. The Santa Fund’s fundraising goal this year is an ambitious $1.35 million, but it’s one that reflects the incredible need in our communities. So, once again to work some magic, we need help from gen- erous elves here in Ajax and Pickering. All dollars collected are used to cover the costs of the gifts, with all administrative costs absorbed by the Toronto Star. As your search continues for that perfect gift, please consider a surprise to remember for the boy and girl next door. LETTER TO THE EDITOR It’s time for a change in government To the editor: Re: Chretien’s cronies are to blame, Nov. 2. When Mark Holland says that Prime Minister Paul Martin had “the guts to step up and take this on,” one realizes how naive the Liberals think the voters are. Martin had no choice in the matter. He had to be seen as doing something. All he did was forestall the inevitable fall of the Liberal regime. Who knows how much he really knew beforehand, but it wouldn’t surprise me to find out that Martin tried to let his old “pal” Chretien get caught with his hand in the cookie jar so that he could appear to be the knight in shining armour and rescue us from the old Chretien regime. The best thing a Liberal could say at this time is that it’s time for a change in government. I hope that Tim Kelly will have to search a lot farther than Ajax-Pickering next time when he wants to get a Liberal opinion. John Cousins Oshawa R egional Chairman Roger Ander- son hasn’t been shy in voicing his displeasure about the provincial government. He, along with Ontario’s municipal leaders, has been in a rotten mood ever since the Province downloaded ser- vices. And who could blame him? The Province got rid of paying for social services where costs escalate in bad economic times. Unfortunately that’s at the same time when governments are taking in less tax money. Chairman Anderson also points out that the provincial growth strategy deems Durham to be a bedroom com- munity and therefore it should have fewer jobs (one for every three resi- dents) than the rest of the regions in the Golden Horseshoe. Hospitals in Durham have also been fighting an uphill battle to get fair fund- ing from the Province. While it would be natural to tap Chairman Anderson or the CEOs of our hospitals on the shoulder and ask, “Where are the results?” it’s not that simple. Durham has been trying for years to force Queen’s Park to deliver the goods. Oshawa was fortunate enough to win a deal for the university before the Con- servatives were ousted. They were far enough into the process that the Liber- als had no choice but to proceed. Too bad we weren’t deeper into the process with the regional courthouse or the ex- pansion of Hwy. 407, both of which have been proceeding with the urgency of a Saturday night bingo game at the church hall. The blame doesn’t fall on the shoulders of any political party. It doesn’t matter if the Province is controlled by the Liber- als, Conservatives or the NDP. Durham just doesn’t have the clout that Toronto has. To ronto has the money and the in- fluence peddlers who can direct policy. There’s strength in numbers but Dur- ham municipalities are so segregated that the Province couldn’t care less if we continue to whine from the kiddies’ table. That’s where Chairman Anderson should lead. Speaking at Queen’s Park won’t cut it. He needs to bring all Dur- ham’s leaders to the table, especially those who have enough power to evoke fear in the reigning political party. We have to be able to back up our threats. Our municipal leaders must realize they have to do what’s best for their constitu- ents. If they don’t, we’d all better get used to being the poor cousin. To help students on long- term or limited suspensions, trustees at the Nov. 7 Dur- ham District School Board standing committee meeting heard the board is introduc- ing a pilot program. At a cost of $85,000, the six- to 20-week program, de- pending on the length of the suspension, will be available to 12 students and offered out of the Durham Alter- native Secondary School’s Pickering site beginning this month. The University of On- tario Institute of Technology and Frontenac Youth Servic- es are partners. Although it will be similar to the board’s ‘Return Ticket’ for fully expelled students, the long-term suspension project won’t be mandatory for students to get back into school. “So what makes a stu- dent go to this program?” Trustee Marilyn Crawford asked superintendent Gloria Schwabe, who was present- ing a report on the project. “There needs to be buy- in for the students to be successful in the program,” Trustee Crawford added. Ms. Schwabe said some- times parents are at their “wit’s end” with their children and the program can offer some help with behavioural issues. Participants will also continue earning credits, so it’s good for them academi- cally, she said. “I understand it’s a pilot -- it’s a very good idea, I just hope they buy in,” said Trust- ee Crawford. Director of education Craig Burch said the board is actually worried they may not have enough spaces to accommodate potential re- quests. The project will in- clude an education plan, an individualized counselling and mediation program, risk assessment and consider- ation of data collection and analysis in conjunction with UOIT. Pilot program aims to break the cycle of student suspensions Adults can get creative this week at the Pickering library A/P PAGE 8 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, NOVEMBER 13, 2005 durhamregion.com citizenseye.comcitizenseye.comcdearsanta@durhamregion.com • See your letter online • Letters answered by Santa’s elves • Enter our Christmas Card drawing contest • Send us your Baby’s First Christmas pictures from years gone by • Send us your Christmas Grinch story • Send us your Christmas Good Samaritan story • Send us a picture of your favourite Christmas ornament, and tell us why it’s special to you • Holding a Food or Toy Drive? LCI Markham is pleased to introduce the latest in laser equipment from Candela, the leader in innovative medical and aesthetic laser and light technology. In response to the increased demand for innovative cosmetic and aesthetic procedures, LCI Markham now offers the most recent medical and aesthetic applications to the Greater Toronto Area with Candela’s Gen- tleYAG. The GentleYAG has the highest peak power in the industry, allowing our medical practitioners unmatched fl exibility and effi cacy in performing a wide variety of procedures. The GentleYAG has the ca- pacity to perform permanent hair reduction on all skin types including tanned patients safely and effectively. In addition to cool- ing systems used in other clinics, such as ice packs and cooling tips, LCI Markham c uses an exclusive skin-cooling machine to provide clients with the most comfort- able and effective treatment possible. All treatments at LCI Markham are performed by internationally trained medical doctors. Although originally designed to facili- tate hair removal for darker skin types, the GentleYAG has also grown in popularity because of its impressive vascular treat- ment capabilities. The GentleYAG can be used to remove unsightly vascular lesions such as spider veins and hemangiomas. Perhaps the most exciting treatment per- formed by the YAG is non-invasive skin tightening or wrinkle reduction. The lat- est trend that is taking America by storm is non-surgical facelifts using laser technology. The GentleYAG “tightens” skin by heating its underlying layers and forming new collagen, resulting in smooth- er, younger looking skin. Dr. Mark Taylor, a Dermatologist at the Gateway Aesthetic Institute and Laser Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, praises the GentleYAG for its ability to perform a wide variety of procedures, and in particular its skin-reju- venating capabilities. Dr. Taylor claims “Candela’s GentleYAG laser is an excep- tional new way to get rid of wrinkles and tighten skin...The patients I have treated with the GentleYAG are overwhelmingly happy with the results.” Dr. Taylor goes on to say that “because it is so quick and re- sults in little redness, patients can receive a skin-tightening treatment during their lunch break, and their co-workers wouldn’t even notice.” Get a smoother, more youth- ful appearance in just 30 minutes without the downtime and discomfort of traditional surgical procedures such as facelifts or other alternative therapies. Shane Vieira, manager of com- munications and fund develop- ment for the CAS, said without help from the fund, clients would “probably not have anything to open up on Christmas. “The people we serve will have a holiday to remember” because of the fund, Mr. Vieira added in a recent interview. In 2006, the fund aims to raise $1.35 million and deliver 45,000 gift boxes to kids from Brampton to Ajax. The News Advertiser is involved for a second year, aiming once again to deliver 1,000 gift boxes to children in Ajax and Pickering. Ontario Works and more than 60 special service agencies in the communities submit children’s names. Every dollar raised is used to purchase the items contained in the gift boxes, which go out to kids up to 12 years of age. Each box holds a sweater, socks, mit- tens, a hat, book, toy, candy and a toothbrush and toothpaste for kids four to 12. Babies receive two sleepers, candy for mom and dad and a small toy. The items are all new and bought directly from manufacturers at great cost savings. “This year will likely be about 100. Last year, there were 175,” said Mr. Vieira. He attributed the drop to a late start on CAS’s part in getting the program organized. Christmas would be “terrible” without the program, Mr. Vieira stated. That’s the opinion of Chris Or- danis, at any rate, and he has no reason to be biased in that direc- tion. Ordanis is the coach of the An- derson Collegiate senior hockey team and a co-convener of the 19- team LOSSA league that has just started up the 2005-06 season. “I think it’s fair to say again that the west will carry the mail,” says Ordanis. “I think there’s parity, but when you look at the whole league, you have to give the west the majority of the credit.” That opinion would be based on the west’s dominance over the past three years, where the winner has emerged each time. Pickering’s St. Mary Monarchs are very much in the hunt for their third straight LOSSA title and their fourth straight trip to the final, while Ajax’s Pickering Tro- jans are also expected to contend again. Pickering’s Dunbarton Spar- tans won the Ajax Invitational last weekend and are also considered a threat in the tough west divi- sion, which also includes Notre Dame and Richardson of Ajax. Pickering’s Pine Ridge has been scheduled in for west division as well, but missed the first game and may pull out, Ordanis fears. The league has been divided into three divisions this season, compared to two last year. The central division includes Ajax, Ux- bridge and four Whitby schools, All Saints, Anderson, Austin and Henry Street, while the east is comprised of Oshawa’s Eastdale, Dwyer and McLaughlin, Bow- manville and Courtice from Clar- ington, and Port Perry. Bowmanville, without a team for the past two years, pulled off an early surprise Tuesday, blast- ing the traditionally strong East- dale Eagles 7-2. “I don’t know if that 7-2 score is an indication of their season because I always expect Eastdale to be up there,” says Ordanis. Proving it was no fluke, Bow- manville dealt Dwyer an 11-3 set- back Wednesday. One of the frustrating reali- ties of high school hockey is the use of AAA rep players, Ordanis says. With no set policy in place, some teams allow AAA players to play only with a full commit- ment, while others welcome them whenever they’re available. “In hockey you never know what you’re going to get until playoffs and you see what players come out of the woodwork,” he says. In an attempt to make the regu- lar season more relevant, only the top 12 will advance to the playoffs this season. The first place teams in each division plus the best remaining team will earn a first round bye, while the fifth through 12th place teams will vie for the other quarterfinal berths. Nitty gritty time for LOSSA football Dwyer, Pickering favoured in semifinals By Brian McNair Staff Editor DURHAM — All season long it seems the Senior football teams at Dwyer and Pickering high schools have been on a championship col- lision course. But it may not be that simple, says LOSSA convener Rick Townend, who insists it won’t be a walk in the park for either team when the semi- finals kick off Tuesday at 1 p.m., with Dwyer hosting Pine Ridge and Pickering hosting Bowmanville. “They’re going to beat up on each other, but that makes you a better team,” says Townend. “All the teams we have left are good football teams and they’re going to represent us well (in the Metro Bowl playoffs).” Pickering came close enough to winning it all last year, losing a close final to St. Mike’s after easily handling the LOSSA competition. The Ajax school has had another outstanding season, going 8-0 with a 302-12 point differential in the regular season, but Townend be- lieves their offence isn’t quite as strong and says they can be beaten this year. Oshawa’s Dwyer Saints appear to be in the same ball park, at the very least, having gone 7-0 with a 312-20 differential this season. Of the other semifinalists, Bow- manville was the most pleasant surprise this season, says Townend. They went 5-2 in the regular season and beat perennial powerhouse St. Mary of Pickering 28-7 in the quar- terfinals Wednesday. Pickering’s Pine Ridge was 6- 2 during the regular season and blanked Uxbridge 34-0 to book a date with Dwyer in the semifinals. The LOSSA final will be played Saturday, Nov. 19, 1 p.m. at Civic Stadium in Oshawa, with the win- ner moving on to the Metro Bowl semifinals. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, NOVEMBER 13, 2005 PAGE 13 P TO ADVERTISE IN THIS SPACE PLEASE CALL ONE OF OUR INSIDE SALES REPRESENTATIVES AT 905-579-4400 CUSTOM UPGRADES INCLUDED WITH ALL RENOVATION PROJECTS BOOKED THIS MONTH! Check Wednesday’s paper each week for complete details Gomba swims her way to nationals, Wall of Fame induction Flood guest of honour at awards banquet By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — The Pickering Swim Club honoured a new mem- ber to its ‘Wall of Fame,’ while also welcoming back an old friend re- cently. The club inducted 12-year-old swimmer Danielle Gomba, who has qualified for the senior nation- als that get under way in Victoria, B.C. later this month. Gomba was joined by former Pickering Swim Club alumnus and two-time Olym- pian Lisa Flood for its awards din- ner in Ajax. Flood also served as the guest speaker. Gomba earned her way to na- tionals after meeting the qualify- ing standard at the 2005 Canadian Long Course Club Nationals in Winnipeg in July. There, she set a new meet record in the 50-metre butterfly with a time of 28.94 sec- onds. Flood, now 34 and living in To- ronto, had three segments of ad- vice to impart to up-and-coming swimmers at the banquet. First, she urged them to master the basics of swimming. “Mastering the fundamentals and becoming an excellent techni- cian -- that’s going to be the key to success,” said Flood who, in addi- tion to two Olympic appearances, won medals at the 1994 Common- wealth Games and at the 1995 Pan American Games. In 1995, she was ranked ninth in the world in her specialty, the 100m breaststroke. Secondly, she said swimmers need the support of their fami- lies, as she had when coming up through the ranks. But, she made a point of noting that the support should also extend to the coaches. Her parents, she said, made the long trek with her to Barcelona, Spain in 1992, even though there were no accommodations when they arrived. “They did eventually find a hotel room,” said Flood. Thirdly, she asked the swimmers to keep in mind why they got into swimming. They can draw on that love of the sport when things aren’t going well. And, when you do win, take time out to recognize your achievements. “Take time in the moment to cel- ebrate,” she advised. The evening was not without some sadness as the club bid adieu to Laura Nicholls, who’s decided to retire from competitive swim- ming after a career that spanned 22 years, including nine on the na- tional team. Nicholls has taken a coaching position with the Oakville Aquatic Club. The Waterloo native was a two- time Olympian, in 1996 in Atlanta, Georgia and in 2000 in Sydney, Australia. The current Canadian 50m freestyle record-holder, Nich- olls earned 18 national titles during her career. She joined the Picker- ing club, under head coach Lucie Hewitt-Henderson, more than a year ago and, during her time in Pickering, set 43 club records . Her coaches at the Region of Wa- terloo (ROW) Swim Club, including Dean Boles and Nancy Jackshaw, of Calgary, who was in attendance, paid tribute to Nicholls. Brian Devitt ‘AAA’ ringette team downs Eastern in final DURHAM — The Cen- tral Fury ‘AAA’ ringette team capped an undefeated week- end with a thrilling 5-4 over- time victory over Eastern to capture the North Bay Chal- lenge Cup. Central rolled through the round-robin, finishing tied with Eastern with a 4- 0-1 record to set up the final between the two teams on Sunday. Central started quickly, with Deanna DaDalt and Carly Taylor scoring to put up an early 2-0 lead. East- ern came to within a goal before Jodie Hannen and Kelly Bateman exchanged goals to make the score 3-2 for Central. DaDalt restored Central’s two-goal lead with 25 seconds left in the first pe- riod. Eastern would respond with just three seconds left in the first frame as Elise Desjardins brought her team back to within a goal at 4-3. Both teams exchanged great chances in an excit- ing second period, but the goaltenders were up to the task. Jayme Simzer notched the tying goal for Eastern with 1:08 to play in the game, sending it to overtime. Eastern held possession for much of the overtime, getting scoring chance after scoring chance, but was unable to score. The stalemate contin- ued until Central broke up an Eastern scoring chance for an odd-man rush. Central’s Ta ylor received a pass in the offensive zone and was able to get just enough on the ring to chip it over the oncoming goalie for the game-winner. Central is a regional team, made up of players 18 years of age and under, drawn from Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Port Perry. The team competes in two more Challenge Cup tournaments in preparation for the 2006 Ontario Winter Games in Barrie in March. Other team member are Kelsey Gallant, Caitlyn Hellingman, Elyssa Jasper, Kristin Johnston, Christine Langford, Megan Macaulay, Chantelle McCrae, Allison Parent, Keri Shanks, Erin Stepniak, Alanna Ticknor, Lyndsay Whyte and Kim Wil- son. Ed Stepniak, Doug Free- man, Karen Duguay, Lind- say Freeman and Carolyn Mountjoy coach the team. The manager is Jerry John- ston.
