Pickering home in need of repairs as discussions continue on who should fix By Mike Ruta Staff Writer PICKERING — A section of leaky roof and the resulting mould at a Pickering senior’s apartment complex should be repaired in a couple of weeks, says the chairman of the St. Martin’s Centre board of directors. But, Peter Davidson says how fu- ture repairs at the non-profit, 58- unit building on the east side of Frenchman’s Bay will be paid for is uncertain at this point. Three levels of government are debating which one should foot the bill for the de- teriorating facility. One senior has been moved to a hotel because a unit is not fit to live in and several other rooms show water damage. Mr. Davidson says a section of roof was replaced earlier this year, but a second started leaking around July. St. Martin’s has worked out a deal with a contractor to repair the most recent damage, and clean up the mould, spreading out the bill into next year. “The whole issue is bigger than that in as much as this is one repair that needs to be done,” Mr. David- son said. “Within a year or two there will probably be more sections of roof (needing repair).” Downloaded from the Province to the Region in 2002, St. Martin’s was set up by the federal government’s Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in the early 1980s. Mr. Davidson says “the conditions are serious” at the building, with water also entering balconies due to a de- sign flaw. However that is expected to occur within months. “If Michigan does close in three months or six months, we’ve got a short-term problem,” he says. “We have contingency plans, but they have not received council approval so I can’t discuss them.” Durham has been sending about 150,000 tonnes of trash a year to Michigan since the closure of the Keele Valley landfill site. Michigan’s legislation states it could cut off the trash flow with just 90 days notice. Durham could only store waste for two days in an emergency. Both Durham Chairman Roger Anderson and Pickering Regional Councillor Rick Johnson said Dur- ham’s agreement with Miller Waste provides some protection if the border closed. But Mr. Anderson says this isn’t an air-tight emergency plan. “If (Miller’s) hands get tied, it all falls back on us; it’s our garbage,” he said. Va ughn Bullough, Miller Waste System’s vice president, says the Re- gion has separate contracts for dis- posing of its garbage. “Our responsi- bility is to transport the material on behalf of the Region for the things we have responsibility for,” he said. Since the waste is taken to Michi- gan, he says “there’s really not a plan” if the border closes. “That’s what the Province and the municipalities are trying to do.” Mr. Curtis confirmed Durham’s participation in the so-called Gart- ner Lee report, also created with input from Toronto and the regions of York and Peel, to explore short- term solutions to a border closure. It reportedly identifies both privately and municipally-owned landfills where GTA trash could be dumped. “It’s confidential,” Mr. Curtis said. “It’s not secret, it’s confidential. Until such time as the plan is finalized, it’s not open for discussion. I’d call it more of a working document.” He says there is only one active landfill site in Durham Region, the Brock Township landfill, currently licensed to take waste only from that northern municipality. “We’ll be working quite closely with the (Ministry of the Environ- ment) to try to find a solution to the Michigan problem and we’ll be looking to them to provide some guidance and leadership,” he said. As Durham explores short-term options in the event of a garbage crisis, it is also working with York to seek a permanent solution to its garbage woes. ✦ Pickering’s from page 1 for repairs has never been enough to address the scope of the work that’s needed. Durham Region maintains the Province should pick up the tab. Durham council on Wednesday called for a meeting of regional, pro- vincial and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation staff “to in- vestigate long-term solutions to ad- dress the capital deficiencies of this building.” It also wants the Province to provide a “short-term” loan. The Province, in turn, says the repairs are Durham’s responsibility. It argues that in addition to annual block funding, the Region received around $1.5 million in federal fund- ing that flowed through the Prov- ince. “While your government debates who is responsible for this issue, 58 senior families are residing in a leak- ing building, with possible roof fail- ure as well as toxic mould....” Region Chairman Roger Anderson says in a recent letter to John Gerretsen, the minister of municipal affairs and housing. He also warns the centre may go into mortgage default by the end of the year and that “it is possible that the Region may rehouse the rent-geared-to-income tenants... to address their health and safety con- cerns.” Mr. Davidson says it’s unlikely the centre will default on its mortgage with CMHC, but conceded it’s pos- sible. He doubts residents will have to be moved elsewhere. He says the board is looking at a number of op- tions for remortgaging the property, but wants to first make repairs to the building. ✦ Province from page 1 Province and Durham debate which should cover costs Durham groups have developed strategic plan By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer PICKERING — Agencies charged with providing public education on nuclear emergencies are starting to work together on an education pro- gram. In May, officials from EMO, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and Dur- ham’s emergency management office (DEMO) formed a subcommittee to develop a co-ordinated education pro- gram for the Pickering and Darlington nuclear plants. Since then, the munici- palities of Pickering, Clarington and To ronto have joined the group and a strategic plan for the Pickering and Clarington stations has been drafted. “The strategies are meant to be a liv- ing document to take us forward,” said Michael Morton, the assistant chief training and education for Emergency Measures Ontario (EMO), while speak- ing to the Pickering nuclear station’s Community Advisory Committee last week. “Until this year, we didn’t really have a formal nuclear emergency public education plan,” Mr. Morton noted. He noted the different agencies and levels of government haven’t in the past been “as co-ordinated as we would like to be.” Objectives of the plan include in- forming people living within a 10-ki- lometre radius, known as the primary zone, of the plant that they could be af- fected by a nuclear emergency. There’s also information on the location of reception centres and how residents will be told of an emergency. Mr. Morton said residents living and working in the primary zone would be told to follow the ‘Go, Listen, Follow’ protocol. That means going inside, lis- tening to the media and following di- rections from the Province. Other parts of the plan include letting people know what to do if they have to evacuate and how to be better prepared in an emer- gency. There’s also information for farmers outside the 50-kilometre zone about measures they would have to take, Mr. Morton noted. Over the next year, the strategy in- cludes initiatives to get the message out, he stated. One action is putting an insert into the telephone directory. “It’s probably the biggest (action) this year.” Liz Oliver, a CAC member and Scar- borough resident, questioned why an insert wasn’t also being put in the To- ronto phone book. Mr. Morton said it would cost about $50,000 to have the insert in the To- ronto book and would cover the en- tire city, not just Scarborough. Rather, inserts will be sent out with the next Neighbours, a newsletter put out quar- terly by OPG. “I don’t feel that’s good enough,” Ms. Oliver said, noting the phone book is kept in the house for a full year. Putting the insert in Neighbours would be a “substandard way of doing it,” she added. Mr. Morton noted Scarborough resi- dents will be “receiving information and will be supported by media cam- paigns. They will be receiving infor- mation and I would argue in a more effective manner.” Putting an insert in with water bills is an option, he added. Joe Hunwicks, the City of Pickering’s CAC representative, said, “This (strat- egy) represents a really significant im- provement to what we’ve been doing in the past.” All businesses within a three-kilo- metre radius of the station will be vis- ited to have concerns addressed, Mr. Morton said. Ms. Oliver said it was a good time to be informing the public about emer- gency measures, given the publicity from New Orleans and how the situa- tion there “was botched. They can see what happens when emergency mea- sures didn’t work.” durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, OCTOBER 2, 2005 PAGE 3 A/P SS TTEEAAMEXMEX $59.00 Living,Dining Room and Hall Reasonable Substitutions Re gularly $69.00 905•576•2777905•576•2777 Mobile Carpet / Upholstery Cleaning Personalized, Professional Cleaners: ALL WORK GUARANTEED Over 26 Years Experience! For his dedication, he was recently named the winner of the Howard Sokolowski Award. Award winner keeps giving back to hospital By Danielle Milley Staff Writer DURHAM — Bill Collier knows first- hand the excellent care the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital provides to its patients and that’s why he’s one of its biggest supporters. Mr. Collier was recently honoured for his years of support in helping to raise funds to buy much needed equipment for the hospital. He received the Howard Sokolowski Award at the Sept. 15 Picker- ing Town Centre Mayors’ Charity Clas- sic. Seventeen years ago, Mr. Collier had an illness not easily diagnosed, but a doctor at the Ajax and Pickering hospital was able to figure it out and treat him. “A very sharp doctor saved my life,” he said. Ever since then he’s been support- ive of his community hospital, includ- ing serving on the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation Board and helping to organize the golf tournament in each of its 10 years. He was surprised to receive the honour, which recognizes individuals, groups or companies that have devoted their time, shared their network of con- tacts and committed financial resources to benefit Rouge Valley Ajax and Picker- ing hospital. “I was very honoured because for them to recognize work that’s done is not why I’m there,” he said. “I’m there because I want to be there because the hospital is very important to all of us, to me especially.” Mr. Collier’s dedication to the golf tournament over the past decade has helped raise more than $1.2 million for the foundation, providing extra funding for areas such as emergency, cardiology and surgery. He served as vice-chair- man of this year’s tournament, which raised $174,000, including $28,000 from the Pickering Professional Firefighters Association’s boot drive and $6,000 from coin boxes and fountains at the Picker- ing Town Centre. “The amount that’s been raised is sig- nificant for what amounts to a small tournament,” he said. At least that’s the indication those who pay the freight have been given by Durham Region’s finance committee. At a time when the committee is musing about a pos- sible double-digit tax increase for 2006, the $100,000 Dur- ham Region kicks in to the GTMA each year has shown very little value for money. And some councillors, who don’t understand why we keep paying into this marketing alliance, have a point when they ask what the Region has received for the $650,000 it has contributed so far in the seven-year history of the GTMA. The short answer is: nothing. To be blunt, is Durham really being served by the GTMA when Regional Chairman Roger Anderson claims that over the past seven years, he has yet to meet a visiting delegation because of the alliance’s efforts? Perhaps Durham’s own economic development office can create as much or more opportunity for the Region without the expense and effort of the GTMA. And while GTMA president Karen Campbell said the GTMA works with regional staff and has a website that has extensive regional profiles, including one for Durham, it’s debatable whether the GTMA is simply duplicating the efforts the Region makes on its own behalf. In addition, Durham already has plenty of clout and major presence when our Regional Chairman also dou- bles as president of the Ontario Association of Municipali- ties. His contacts and knowledge alone should be able to drum up more business and investment in Durham than anything the GTMA can provide. There are several options that can be used for the $100,000 that is plowed into the GTMA every year. The money could be budgeted for any one of a number of other regional programs that could certainly use it. It could be left out of the budget to give taxpayers a break (though it would be tiny), or the Region could use it to help promote itself. What it shouldn’t be used for though is further mem- bership in the GTMA. Time for viable council options in Pickering To the editor: Our regional councillors have warned Durham Regional Police to stop treating council as a wallet they can dip into on a regular basis. I challenge the council to take their own advice. I am very concerned that I will no longer be able to af- ford to live in this beautiful, quiet city. My property taxes have almost reached 10 per cent of my gross income. That just doesn’t make any sense to me. I have lost all confidence in the people I elected, and I hope there are some successful business executives who will step up next year and give us a viable option on our ballots. Have voters simply run out of options? H ell, I never vote for any- body. I always vote against.” -- W. C. Fields. That’s certainly one way of doing it. One of many, in fact. I point this out since a federal elec- tion is all but announced. There’s a precarious Liberal minority govern- ment whose leader has promised an election within 30 days of a sure-to- be-damning sponsorship scandal re- port. The Conservatives are appearing in TV ads, attempting to look oh-so- natural. The anticipation is definitely there. So I’m wondering, when people step into the voting booth, do they vote for a candidate? Do they vote for a party? Or do they, like Mr. Fields says he did, vote against? Do they vote for some- body thinking that person’s party will be in power? Do they vote because they admire a party leader? Is there an eeny-meeny-miney-mo? Do they pick the first name on the ballot? The last? The coolest-sounding? Do they vote straight-up or in a more strategic fash- ion? Do they employ the same strategy every time they mark an X? Don’t think parties and candidates aren’t aware of this. The most grievous example I can think of came during a provincial byelection in the Vaughan- King-Aurora riding. On the Conserva- tive lawn signs and newspaper adver- tisements, then-Premier Mike Harris’s name dwarfed the size of the actual candidate’s. The Liberals still won -- easily. Looking ahead, it would appear once again that Ontario is the pivotal area if the Liberals are to extend what is soon to be a 12-year reign. It would seem that their lengthy tenure, the fourth longest consecutive rule by one party in Canadian history, combined with the appalling sponsorship scan- dal (and, really, governments have been punted out of office for far less serious offences) could make them a candidate for the opposition benches. We’ll find out soon enough -- how- ever earnestly we cast our ballots. As for the 40 per cent or so of the eli- gible voters who don’t vote... hmmmm maybe those people do employ Fields’ strategy -- and think they’ve simply run out of options. A student’s mind will literally shift gears upon entering it. It will be easier to get into the “study mode”. Don’t construct the kind of place you would like to study in. Build a place where your child feels en- ergized and comfort- able. It should be a safe environment where your child spends time learning. It shouldn’t be the same place he/she watches TV, stores junk or hangs out with their friends. A study stadium had the singular purpose of supporting your child’s best work. The emphasis should be on function, not fl ash. Build a corner of the world that belongs to your young person; a place that is singularly focused on their ac- cess to knowledge; a study stadium should be quiet and private. It should be an environment where there are few distractions, away from the sights and sounds of television, radio, and other people. Your young person needs to be surrounded by fi rm reminders that their learning is a high priority. Whether you fi nd this place in a corner of a bedroom, the basement or even the garage is not important. What is important is the message that it sends your kid and the message is: “Here’s a place to do your best work!” Don’t worry if your child is too young to use some of these items. It’s good that they become familiar with the tools of education. Who knows how much learning results from fooling around with things we aren’t formally prepared to use? However they represented a small minority as Durham council signed off on the new additions to the Durham Region Transit fleet. Council made the pre-budget pur- chase in advance of a consultant’s re- port, expected in a month or so, iden- tifying the Region’s transit needs, in- cluding bus purchases, over a five-year period. However councillors heard that 40 existing buses are 18 years or older, and that on the recent Durham farm tour, the Ajax-Pickering Transit Au- thority (APTA) buses leaked badly. Oshawa Regional Councillor Nester Pidwerbecki, chairman of the transit implementation committee, said the buses would help the new service hit the ground running. “We want to come out firing on a few good cylinders in 2006 and show the public these aren’t garbage cans on wheels,” he said in an interview. The 2005, Nova low-floor buses cost a combined $877,812, saving the Re- gion around $70,000. In addition, one of the buses is available right away and the second in five months. Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan, citing a warning from finance chairman and Clarington Mayor John Mutton of a huge tax hike, was opposed. “Somebody needs to demonstrate to me... that there’s a need for these hi- tech buses to be added to the fleet,” he said. Looking over the staff report, Clar- ington Regional Councillor Jim Schell said, “I don’t have any justifiable need for these buses in front of me. “Until I get the report and under- stand the needs of the transit system, I don’t know.” But most councillors said the buses were a good addition to the fleet at a good price. “I don’t think this is the time to get cold feet now,” said Ajax Regional Councillor Colleen Jordan, adding council knew regional transit would be expensive. Even Whitby Mayor Marcel Brunelle, who opposed region-wide transit, sup- ported buying the vehicles. “This is a bargoon and an opportu- nity and we ought to take it,” he said. Ajax Regional Councillor Scott Craw- ford noted the chance to buy the buses had a deadline. Ted Galinis, Durham transit manager, told councilors if they didn’t approve the buses Wednesday “it may be too late.” “This is a time-sensitive matter,” said Coun. Crawford. “This is excellent value for the taxpayers’ transit dollar.” However he warned that transit ser- vices aren’t money-makers, warning of “e ye-opening” budgets this and next year. Councillors, as part of the 2006 bud- get process, must decide if they will proceed with $5 million in bus pur- chases the APTA planned for this year. Michael Moody was at work at Can-Sort Recycling Limited in Pickering on Sept. 9 when he was crushed by a front-end loader. The eldest of five boys, Mr. Moody grew up in Scarborough and lived in Pickering for 12 years. Fifty years old at the time of his death, he is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sharon, and his two children, Matthew, 22, and Ta ylor, 16. Thom Moody says his brother was “a kind, gentle and unas- suming man,” well-liked by all who knew him. Hundreds of people, including friends, neighbours and family, showed up for the visitation and funeral service. “O ne of the kids told me Mi- chael was voted the coolest dad on the street,” Mr. Moody says. Many mourners wanted to do more than just pay their respects, and a trust fund has been estab- lished to support the education of Mr. Moody’s children. Ontario Trillium Foundation gives $51,300 for case management system DURHAM — The Literacy Network of Durham Region and Durham College have been awarded a $51,300 grant by the Ontario Tril- lium Foundation. The grant is for research and community consulta- tions needed in the intro- duction of a Wraparound Coordinated Case Man- agement System in Dur- ham Region. The system is a model that aims to as- sist families and persons dealing with complex so- cial problems by building teams of professionals and members of the commu- nity who provide helpful support and services. “The Literacy Network of Durham Region and its col- laborative partner, Durham College, are thrilled to have received a generous grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to carry out such an important, com- munity enhancing project,” said network executive director Jeannine Agnew- Kata. “We look forward to working with our other partner agencies to in- vestigate the Wraparound model and consider its ap- plication within Durham Region.” The nine-month grant will be used to conduct a study and three informa- tion sessions to introduce local community service agencies to the Wrap- around model. Durham College, Literacy Network receive grant PICKERING — More than 1,550 children regis- tered for Pickering Public Library’s reading program this summer. Kids came to the library more than 3,500 times this summer to check out books, DVDs and comput- er games. They covered its walls with more than 2,000 reviews. Following concerns over literacy levels in boys, the library put a particular em- phasis on them and had more than 700 participate in summer reading. Kids get a good read in Pickering By Danielle Milley Staff Writer AJAX — It was the day before Eleanor Cassin’s driving test and she was nervous. She borrowed a book from her friend Louise Johnson and was determined to study just as soon as she got home. This was the first test for Ms. Cassin after driving for 50 years and she was afraid she would fail the test and not be able to get herself around anymore. “I don’t like driving an night but I do need it (her licence) for local driving,” she said. Ms. Cassin was one of about 30 members of the Ajax Seniors’ Friendship Club listening to Ms. Johnson detail her personal experience taking the senior driving test. In Ontario, the Senior Driver Renewal Pro- gram requires drivers aged 80 years and older to undergo a vision test, a knowledge test, and take part in a group education session every two years. A small number of drivers may also be asked to take a road test to have their in-car skills assessed. This was Ms. Cassin’s first attempt at those tests and after listening to Ms. Johnson’s talk, she wasn’t feeling better but rather unpre- pared. Ms. Johnson talked about going to the test centre in Oshawa where she did all the tests (she only got one question wrong on the knowledge test) and gave some advice. She said the group education session is first and people need to pay attention. “What she’s telling you in the seminar are things you need to know for the test,” she said. A member of the audience asked if the test was hard. “If wasn’t difficult, but it was tricky,” she replied. Ms. Johnson, 84, took her third test this summer, but said she is still nervous each time. “I do a lot of things that I wouldn’t be able to do with public transit... It would change my lifestyle,” she said of not being able to drive. Lionel Wearing, 82, took the test for the second time this year. He’s been driving since 1958 and has only had one speeding ticket and one crash in a shopping centre parking lot, which police deemed an accident. He said driving is very important to him. “I have family in Uxbridge and the only way I can get to Uxbridge is by car,” he said, adding when he travels to places such as Oakville he takes the GO. “I enjoy driving. When you are a senior you need that car to get to doctor’s ap- pointments.” He advised the audience to be proactive. “If it’s getting close to your birthday, give them (Ministry of Transportation) a call,” he said. Virginia Thorne, who doesn’t drive, pointed out seniors can lead full lives without a car. “(Ms. Johnson) was kind of making it sound like there is no life after driving and there is,” she said, adding transit in Ajax is good. She routinely uses APTA, GO and even Greyhound to make longer trips. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, OCTOBER 2, 2005 PAGE 11 A/P Call Today to Book your Tour!!! T here’s a funny cartoon in The New Yorker magazine. It shows an elderly couple at the pharmacist’s counter. The man is saying, “I want the night- before-pill and she wants the morning-after-pill!” Let’s hope these cartoon char- acters had a pleasant and suc- cessful evening. But what hap- pens to real people? And can the world’s most famous hockey coach make a difference for males too embarrassed to seek help for erectile dysfunction (ED)? Unlike cartoon characters, the majority of men do not seek help for erectile dysfunction. It’s esti- mated that one million Canadian males suffer from ED and only 20 per cent are being treated for this condition. This, in spite of the huge public promotion of ED drugs. Since sex is such a driving force that it has often decided the fate of nations, why have ED drugs been such a hard sell? Being impotent is an ego-shat- tering experience for macho males. One man confided to me, “I’m embarrassed to ask my family doctor whom I’ve known for years.” Another confided, “I was given the prescription, but it wasn’t filled for days. The first time I went to the pharmacy there was a young female pharmacist behind the counter. I thought she would think I was a dirty old man and left without the medication.” This isn’t the only foolish thought. Today the younger gen- eration admit that they think old folks just hold hands. One uni- versity survey revealed that 80 per cent of students were sure their parents didn’t indulge in sex! My mail tells the same story. When a letter begins, “Please don’t mention my name in your column,” I immediately assume that in all probability the ques- tion is about sex and/or ED drugs. Men want to tell me anon- ymously what they cannot tell their own doctor. Pharmaceutical companies have tried to circumvent this psy- chological problem by using role models. If Bob Dole, former vice- president of the U.S., can admit on TV that he has ED and needs Viagra, why can’t others do the same thing? In Canada, Guy Laf- leur, the hockey great, has also urged men to use Viagra, but he quickly adds he doesn’t suffer from ED. Now Scotty Bowman, the most winning coach in hockey history, has jumped off the bench and says he has ED, takes Levitra, and that it acts fast. And if anyone can prod the 80 per cent of males with impotence to seek medi- cal attention for this condition, it’s Bowman. He was the “great motivator,” noted for not mincing words with his multi-millionaire players. Bowman says Levitra has changed and speeded up his sex life. He says he takes the pill, brushes his teeth and by that time he’s ready for bed and sex. Or as one of my patients who takes Levitra told me, “from the first kiss I’m ready to go.” A report in the Journal of Sex- ual and Reproductive Medicine outlines what most men and their wives want from an ED drug. Like Bowman, they want a quick response within 25 minutes or less and they want to be able to use an ED drug after food and alcohol. To day Viagra, Cialis and Levi- tra usually provide good results. But I hear often about two major mistakes in my office. In some instances, an ED drug will be a complete flop. This is when men forget the old saying, “if at first you don’t succeed try, try again.” The fact that one drug failed does not imply that they will all fail. It’s worthwhile to try another. But what if they all fail? During a visit to Harley Street in London, England I talked with Dr. Mal- colm Carruthers. He’s a world authority on impotence and one of the early pioneers of male menopause. He says that cases such as these need a double- barrelled approach using both testosterone and an ED. The two can end impotence. My advice? If Bowman can stand at centre ice and announce to the world that he’s impotent and needs an ED drug, so can you admit it. The first step is to see your doctor who can pre- scribe the appropriate ED medi- cation. To ronto physician Dr. Gifford- Jones has offered medical advice and opinions for decades in his syndicated column. ®Registered trademarks of Royal Bank of Canada. For me, this is the perfect op- portunity to give something back to a w onderful community, which has been very good to my family and me. My wife Louise and I have called Pickering home for over 15 years. The br oader Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge com- munity is also very much a part of us since we have made many friends in this area over the years. I also have strong roots in the busi- ness community. I served the elec- tric industry as General Manager of Pickering Hydro when it was originally created over 25 years ago and later as the first President and CEO of Verid- ian Corporation when it was formed in 1999. When I retired last year, I still w ished to make use of my experience, skills and ideas. Therefore, I made a heartfelt decision to volunteer where I could make a real and meaningful dif- ference in the community. That’s why I joined the United Way team. As you all know, the Ajax-Pickering- Uxbridge community is one of the best places to live in the country. The se- cret of our community’s success is not its location, amenities and attractions. Instead, it’s the people who make it so special. Louise and I feel fortunate to have developed many strong relation- ships with neighbours and friends and I personally have long-lasting ties to the colleagues I have had the privilege of working with. “I am keenly aware that despite our prosperity, there are many needy and hurting people.” These are people right in our fami- lies, among our friends, in our own neigbourhood, and they work right alongside of us in the workplace. “That is where you and I can make a huge difference.” Did you know that one in three peo- ple benefit from the services offered through United Way? We can make a difference by generously donating to United Way and the many agencies it supports. In fact, there are almost 30 agencies that deliver a variety of servic- es to people in crisis and in need right here where we live. Consider that some of these services assist the physically and emotionally challenged, the youth, the elderly and those who have come through traumatic experiences. What a tremendous oppor- tunity to be the helping hand of United Way. I along with the staff and volunteers at United Way are committed to doing our very best to build a much stronger, healthier and more caring community. P lease remember that by helping those who are disadvantaged and have critical needs we are actually helping our very own families, friends and neighbours. P lease help us – together we will build a better community. Sincerely, John Wiersma Chair, 2005 Campaign United Way Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge Neighbours Helping Neighbours IS the United Way Message from the 2005 Volunteer Campaign Chair Raising money for the community through focused driven volunteers United Way is a registered charitable orga- nization that not only raises money for agencies in their community, but serves as a community builder as well. United Way is a volunteer- driven organization focused on increasing the organized capacity of people to care for one an- other. They help to build the communities of tomorrow, delivering health and social services. Through prevention, counselling and crisis in- tervention these services help individuals and families to be their best. United Way brings together a wealth of community resources – do- nors, volunteers, service providers, corporations, organized labour – in order to ensure that ser- vices and programs are available to those most in need. Within United Way, volunteers are re- sponsible for fundraising, comprising the Board of Trustees, sitting on various committees and are accountable for the allocation of funding to accredited agencies. The ratio of volunteers to staff is 80:1. Twenty-nine agencies and fi fty- eight programs can be helped with one dona- tion; funds raised in our community will col- lectively target each need with greater force. You might not think you know anyone that needs or has used United Way services – perhaps that is because they didn’t want you to. In January 2004, Jim Woodward was hired as the fi rst Labour Staff Representative at United Wa y. He has since retired and Yvette Fiala is onboard to continue the great work Jim started. Labour Breakfast In June 2004, the fi rst annual labour breakfast was held for union leaders and ac- tivists at the CAW local 2090 hall in Ajax and over 50 were in attendance. The theme of this event was Strengthening Commu- nities through Partnerships. In keeping with this theme, this breakfast was jointly funded and arranged by Durham Region Labour Council and United Way. The key note speaker was the President of CUPE Ontario brother Sid Ryan. Sid spoke to issues that impact the daily lives of working people and their families. He stat- ed “some of the problems workers face are not necessarily work related and in many cases are beyond the control of the indi- vidual”. He noted that Labour and United Wa y share the same goals when it comes to establishing a wide range of social and pub- lic services, which are accessible, universal and high quality. Allan Gibbins, then President of United Wa y’s Board of Trustees and Pat O’Brien, Chair of United Way of Ajax-Pickering- Uxbridge 2004 fundraising Campaign, each spoke about the value of partner- ships and how, by working together, we can strengthen the communities where we live and work. John Lewis, President, Durham Region Labour Council was also in atten- dance. Winnie Ng, Ontario Director of the Ca- nadian Labour Congress, reminded us that it was the CLC who took the lead in devel- oping an ongoing relationship with United Wa y in communities across Canada, as one way of ensuring union and community members can access important health and social services in their communities. In October 2005, there will be a similar event held as a Labour Appreciation dinner. United Way assisted during the SARS crisis, came to the aid of Meals on Wheels and helps rebuild lives through Credit Counselling Services of Durham Region. This year United Way received requests for more than 4,800 kits in the back-to-school supplies project for disadvantaged school children; a project that began in 2000 in re- sponse to the rising issue of child poverty in the Durham Region. United Way has partnered with the Red Cross and the Pickering Town Centre on this initiative. The Red Cross was collecting and compiling back- packs in a warehouse in Oshawa and the Pickering Town Centre had three large donation boxes set up to collect supplies. These kits allow students to keep their dignity. The backpacks are not identifiable as a charity bag, which allows a smooth transition for the un- derprivileged into the “normal” school-life. S ince the project began, it has grown from 150 backpacks filled with supplies provided to 4,250 back-to-school kits provided last year. This initiative has expanded across the re- gion since its inception. While these num- bers emphasize a sad but growing need in Durham, they also serve to high- light the generosity of Durham residents and show what can be done when the community works together. United Way received a call from the donor’s daughter who had to have a mo- torized scooter out of their sold house in less than a week and they were unable to find a person in need of this scooter. The donor was willing to donate it to an agency or individual who needed it and could not afford such a big purchase. A c lient and volunteer with Victorian Or- der of Nurses matched the need. This is an excellent example of the significant role United Way plays in our community and the impact it has on individual lives. More people are recognizing United Way as a community resource, which goes far beyond fundraising. “(My foster children) were getting concerned as to how I would get to the park with them this summer,” Mrs. Dick- inson said of receiving her new scooter, she was thrilled to receive it. FOOTPRINTS have been able to pro- vide respite services for families of chil- dren within the Autism spectrum. Their first grant was received in February 2004 and the second in April 2005. With the financial support from United Way, they have been able to hire a Coordinator for their program, purchase educational toys for the children and provide train- ing for their volunteers. Through LDS, a survey was developed and distributed to help FOOTPRINTS learn how to better serve the families in this area. Without United Way’s confidence, support and vision of what could be accomplished; they would not be providing the respite needed by these families. Such is the case with Uxbridge resident Sarah Duncan, who im- migrated to Canada from Ireland in 1937. Since her husband Jim passed away, and some of her local friends “went upstairs” as she explained it, she found her- self without many ears to lis- ten to her tales of growing up through the past century. “I was alone for 15 years,” ex- plained Ms. Duncan, adding that her husband passed away in 1982. Her son Jim has since moved home, but she now has another companion visit her on a weekly basis to listen to her sto- ries of living through the Depres- sion, and help her leaf through photographs of her beloved Ire- land. Jacki Sweet, an Uxbridge resi- dent, has dedicated time over the last five years as a Community Care Durham Friendly Visitor. Ms. Duncan said that since Ms. Sweet starting coming by a year and a half ago, they have become good friends. “I couldn’t say enough about (Community Care Durham),” said Ms. Duncan. “Ms. Sweet is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met... and she makes a really good cup of tea,” she added. Ms. Sweet’s home visits are amongst about 20,000 visits across the region that Commu- nity Care Durham will provide this year, based on last year’s numbers from the organization. Ms. Sweet works on a volunteer basis; however Ms. Duncan also employs the services of Com- munity Care Durham for home maintenance. Community Care also provides paid transportation services, delivered meals (Meals on Wheels), adult day programs, and a mental health program (COPE). Executive director of Commu- nity Care, Brent Farr, said the organization offers those like Ms. Duncan, who has lived in her current house in Uxbridge since it was built in 1963, an alterna- tive to nursing homes and retire- ment centres. “We help people live at home, and provide a network of sup- port,” said Mr. Farr. The charity has nine offices across Durham, which Mr. Farr feels is important to reach those in need. “Being de-centralized is one of our strengths,” he said. “We can be very specific to the communi- ties the offices are in,” he added. Mr. Farr explained that 65 per cent of the funding into the char- ity comes from the Province, with the other 35 per cent coming from fundraisers and user fees. He noted that the United Way is a large contributor to Community Care Durham. “It’s tough to keep up with the rising cost of fuel and inflation,” explained Mr. Farr, adding that one of the goals of the organiza- tion is to keep user fees reason- able. Ms. Duncan hopes she has many more visits from Commu- nity Care to share her memories. “I’ve had a wonderful life in Canada,” she said. “I’ve worked very hard to be here.” For more information about the organization, visit www.com- munitycaredurham.on.ca. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, OCTOBER 2, 2005 PAGE 17 A/P Durham organization helps seniors find a friend Celia Klemenz/ News Advertiser photo Jacki Sweet, left, and Sarah Duncan have become good friends through a visitor program. All three Dolphins’ teams are on home turf at Kinsmen Park on Sun- day where they’ll host the North York Grizzlies in Central Ontario Minor Football League games. The tyke game is at 9:30 a.m., followed by the atoms at 11:30 a.m. and the peewees at 1:30 p.m. The Dolphins’ peewees cap- tured the lone win Sunday after- noon against Scarborough, defeat- ing the Thunder 16-0 at Kinsmen Park. The atoms dropped a 12-8 decision, while the tykes were 55- 18 victims. The peewees improved their COMFL record to 3-0-1 with the victory, with running back Jordan Nguyen scoring both touchdowns. As has happened so often this season, the Dolphins’ defence, aptly named ‘The Teal Curtain’, was dominant in limiting the Thunder offence to little or no gain. Line- men Peter Iyamu, Jamal Watson, Kirk Thurston, Chee Maduekwe, Dexter Damboise and Devin Elms were relentless in completing their assignments. The linebacking corps of Sean Carter, Charlie Tak, Shane Lock, Jed Reid, Brandon Misseri and Brandon Jefferies were equally prolific. Meanwhile, the Thunder pass- ing game was grounded, thanks to the work of defensive backs Andre Shand, Andy Horodnyk, Jelane Roberts, Robert Sinclair, Greg Far- rell and Adrian Williamson. The offensive line, led by centre Ian Tobias and guard Kyle Wasson, executed with precision, creating holes for Nguyen. On special teams, kicker Derek Williams played solid, error-free football to limit the Thunder on returns. Co-defensive players of the game were defensive ends Iyamu and Damboise. Nguyen was the offensive player of the game. Horo- dnyk and Elms were the special teams players of the contest. Meanwhile, in the atom game, the Dolphins suffered their second loss of the season. The Thunder scored quickly in the first quarter and added anoth- er six points early in the second. The Dolphins’ offence started to move the ball again and with a leaping touchdown grab by Kurlan Cadet off a well-placed pass by QB Jeff McIlravey and a two-point conversion by Roynelle Meredith, the Dolphins came back to life. The entire defensive unit was strong all game but, like the of- fence, did learn some lessons about intensity from the Thunder. Defensive MVPs were Connor Paterson, Alex Horodnyk, Spenser Stewart and Garrett Mole. Durham Lightning ready for Tuesday’s home opener Sweeping changes have brought optimism to elite women’s team By Al Rivett Sports Editor DURHAM — Entering his third season behind the bench of the Durham Lightning, Peter Perram notes an air of excitement has permeated the team. Perram’s previous two seasons as the head coach of the Na- tional Women’s Hockey League team were marked by struggle: Not enough skilled play- ers to match firepower of division rivals To- ronto Aeros and Bramp- ton Thun- der and, as a conse- quence, a dearth of wins, back-to-back last-place fin- ishes and zero playoff berths. This season, however, there’s heightened expectations. And, Perram notes, Tuesday’s home opener against the powerhouse Thunder at the Ajax Community Centre at 7:50 p.m. should prove the Lightning is a new team in every way. “We can’t wait,” he says. Despite no pre-season action, the Lightning chalked up a win in its regular-season opener Sept. 24 in Oakville, defeating the Ice 4-1. There are many reasons for Per- ram’s upbeat outlook: The team has a new ownership group front- ed by Brandon Smith and a new direction. As the general manag- er, Smith has already brought a number of elite players into the fold. In addition to Pickering’s own Latoya Clarke, who enjoyed a prolific collegiate career with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers and also played on Can- ada’s women’s under-22 team, the team also signed goaltender Ken- dra Fisher, formerly of the Toronto Aeros, and Teresa Marchese, who played with the Mercyhurst Uni- versity Lakers last season. The team also brought over defence- man Dawn Macauley from the Ice. Perram notes the Lightning’s goaltending tandem of Fisher and Desi Clark, a top-10 U.S. collegiate goaltender in her senior year last season with Mercyhurst, should provide the best puckstopping of his coaching tenure. “We’ll have outstanding goal- tending,” predicts Perram. “We’ve always had reasonably good goal- tending, but we now have a vet- eran with lots of experience in Fisher and Desi Clark; she’s our future. We have a lot of confi- dence in these two players.” The defence also has Perram smiling. The arrival of Macauley, along with blue-lin- ers Joanie Denby, Mel Roach, Pa- mela Pachal, Jen Mullick and Mel Rothan, has greatly up- graded the back end. “Our defence, oh my God, is outstanding in comparison to what we had in the past,” says Perram. And, he predicts visiting teams will dread quickly their trips to the Ajax Community Centre. Playing on the large Olympic ice should provide the Lightning a distinct advantage because of the speedi- ness of their forwards. “If (the opposition) don’t have the ability to cover the ice, they’re going to be in trouble,” says Per- ram. “We have tons of speed up front.” He points to Clarke specifically, noting she’s arguably the fastest player in the league. “She’s one of the quickest players I’ve ever seen,” says Per- ram. “Her speed from ‘A’ to ‘B’ is blazing. The Oakville defence, you could see their eyes from the bench. When she’s coming down they don’t know what she’ll do.” The Lightning will also be on home ice at the community centre on Saturday, Oct. 8 against the Ottawa Raiders. A number of spe- cial events are planned during the contest. Our family would like to give very special thanks to Dr. Baker, who realized how important it was to get Muriel well enough to go home where she so needed to be. We would also like to thank the staff at McEachnie Funeral Home for helping us through this very difficult time. Muriel is now at peace. We will forever treasure her memory. The family of the late Anthony (Tony) Azzopardi would like to thank all the relatives and friends who sent cards, mass cards, flowers, donations, phone calls and food. The most common findings for Fibromyalgia (FM) are chronic pain, fatigue, pain to touch, sleep disorders and inability to handle stress. There is much similarity to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), which as the name suggests has a greater degree of fatigue. The diagnostic criterion for FM is when 11 or more areas are found to be greatly tender to touch. It is unclear how these disorders begin and exactly what is the cause. There are no specific drugs that target the cause of this disease. An area in the brain called the limbic system regulates among other things body rhythms such as sleep/wake cycle and tolerance to stress and pain. When this system does not function properly, the result is the plethora of symptoms found with what is termed FM or CFS. What can help? Nerves that lead to organs and muscles exit the spinal column between each vertebra. When vertebrae are misaligned they can put pressure on these nerves and cause interference to the nervous system: this is called a subluxation. This interference can also lead to imbalance in the central nervous system (the brain) through a process called deafferentation. Chiropractic is effective in reducing and eliminating this interference caused by subluxations, bringing balance to the nervous system (both peripheral and central) of humankind; in fact, Chiropractors are the only doctors trained to find and adjust these subluxations. To find out more about FM and CFS and how Chiropractic can help you to achieve and maintain optimal health, please call 416 724 7574. Dr. Brian R.
