Cities are our economic engines... Cities are where people live... They are where communities are formed,” said Mr. Holland, a former regional Pickering council- lor. “The federal government wants to be there with you to help make cities sustainable, to help make communities sustainable.” As part of the new relationship, he talked about the money the fed- eral government has given to Pick- ering, including $200,000 for in- frastructure and $850,000 this year alone from the gas tax. Mayor Dave Ryan said it was nice to see that level of co-operation between the federal government and municipalities, but he also ex- pressed words of caution. “I get nervous when I hear the federal and provincial governments say they’re going to encourage pro- grams but the municipality is left to fund them... Municipalities can- not afford to fund these wonderful ideas through their tax base,” he said. Mr. Holland replied that the dif- ferent levels would be real partners, C ameras don’t give bang for the buck to stop traffic violation By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM — Expressing disap- pointment with the findings, re- gional councillors nonetheless agreed with a staff report that red light cameras aren’t a good fit for Durham. But at least one council member isn’t prepared to let the issue die. The Region’s works commit- tee, at a Sept. 14 meeting, received the final consultant’s study on the practicality, costs and benefits of putting a red light camera program in place in Durham. Among the findings, the report states, “Red light running is not a prevalent problem” here and that it would not pay for itself in terms of revenue from fines. Even two cameras would cost $1.1 million in capital and operating costs in the first year, and $500,000 per year thereafter, the report states. Finally, the report notes the cameras can only capture violators who run a light when it is “well into the red phase,” but that that represents just one per cent of red light runners. Instead, the committee recom- mended to council that money be set aside in the 2006 works budget to implement an integrated road safety program in the region. Wo rks commissioner Cliff Curtis said experience suggests speeding cannot be controlled because most people are guilty of it. “People drive at the speed they’re comfortable with given the design of the road... irrespective of the speed limit,” said Mr. Curtis. Regional council is to deal with the committee’s recommendation on Sept. 28. Pickering Regional Councillor Bill McLean, a proponent of the cameras, in an interview said he plans to pull the item for debate at council. “I’m a little disappointed in the short-sightedness of the works committee,” he said. “I’ve got all kinds of statistics that show it saves lives and reduces injuries.” Councillor McLean, a retired To ronto police officer, rejected the notion that red light running isn’t a serious problem in Durham. “You’re darn right it is and sta- tistics show people are losing their lives,” he says. Safety concerns at centre leads to debate, but staff to look for ways to keep program By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM — Durham’s works committee is ready to stop the free drop off of recyclables at a regional recycling centre if a safety concern isn’t solved. At Wednesday’s meeting, a staff report from commissioner Cliff Curtis said for many years residents and small businesses have been able to drop off blue box recycla- bles at the Whitby centre for free. “As the recycling centre gets bus- ier and busier... the private vehicles co-mingling with waste collection trucks are causing a safety issue,” Mr. Curtis told the committee. His report referred to “an increase in accidents and near misses as more and more inexperienced resi- dential drivers use this particular facility as opposed to the Region’s waste management sites.” Of three options proposed by Mr. Curtis, he recommend that the pro- gram be discontinued. If that oc- curs, the public and business peo- ple would have to travel to waste sites in Oshawa, Port Perry or Brock To w nship. “Will small business look at this as a reduction in service?” asked Ajax Regional Councillor Scott Crawford. “When I looked at this, the first thing I thought was, I’m going to hear from small businesses, ‘you’re taking something away from us.’” Mr. Curtis, who said he hoped his re- port would generate debate, said the Region would like to continue the program, but in a safe manner. Councillor Crawford said resi- dents should put their recyclables at the curb. As for small businesses in plazas, he said “all their trash and recyclables seems to go in one giant bin and it’s picked up privately.” He suggested a dedicated car lane at the recycling centre, or restricting drop offs to certain times. The committee heard that at other waste management sites, res- idents are charged $100 per 1,000 kilograms of waste, generally bring- ing in garbage and recyclables. Committee chairman and Whit- by Mayor Marcelle Brunelle won- dered if the service at the waste sites wasn’t working against recy- cling efforts, since residents bring both to the sites, not separating trash from recyclables. Councillor Crawford’s motion that the issue be re-investigated by staff was successful, asking they “find a resolution to keep (the pro- gram) going.” The motion comes to regional council on Sept. 28. “I think there’s another option out there,” he said. Two other options reported by Mr. Curtis were to continue the ex- isting program, but charge as at waste sites, or to keep the program but have recyclables dropped off at the vacant compost site beside the recycling centre. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, SEPTEMBER 18, 2005 PAGE 3 A/P SALT GLOW BODY TREATMENT Regular price: $75.00 Special price: $45.00 Va lid until September 30th, 2005 Not available as a gift certificate spa speci a l The FACIAL PLACE A Grand Spa Experience Whitby Spa (905) 668-8128 Pickering Spa (905) 831-9700 IT’S SINGING SO BAD, WE’LL PAY YOU TO LISTEN! $70,000 in Cash Available to be Won. On Thursday, the Province an- nounced it will waive education fees for children affected by Hur- ricane Katrina. The natural disas- ter struck Louisiana Aug. 29, and left thousands presumed dead and many more homeless. “We have no problem opening our doors to them,” said Monique Morin, media relations officer for the Durham District Catholic School Board. Last year, Durham’s Catholic board opened its doors to students affected by the hurricane in Haiti, she added. The Catholic board has received at least one inquiry about school- ing from an Ajax family that could be hosting relatives from New Or- leans due to the hurricane. Ms. Morin said she’s not sure which school the victims would be at- tending and the board is still wait- ing to hear back. She added she’s sure the school would provide any needed school supplies to the Louisiana students as well. The Durham District School Board has also committed to opening its arms to Louisiana students looking for a seat, said Wendy Parke, acting communica- tions manager. “We’d do whatever we could to support the students,” said Ms. Parke. She added trustees have encouraged schools to do what- ever they can to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. “We anticipate many of the schools will have local initiatives,” Ms. Parke said. Ms. Parke was unaware of any inquiries from Louisiana students looking for a seat. The Province will fully reim- bursed school boards for admit- ting students affected by the hur- ricane. Last year, the Education Act was amended to exempt some temporary Ontario residents from paying fees as high as $7,000 to $10,000 a year to attend school. The change allowed it to react quickly to events such as natural disasters. Gym ventilation is planned for October. At Paul Dwyer, the sci- ence lab was finished except for its sinks, which were back-ordered. It was about $120,000. About $400,000 was spent at Denis O’Connor, which had IT and Bell wiring com- pleted, ceramic tile work done and a handicapped bathroom installed. A photo lab and locker repairs were included in $100,000 spent at St. Mary. Our Lady of the Bay in Pickering had its library com- pleted for about $80,000. In Ajax, St. Jude’s gym had its rubberized floor and game lines completed and the lower half of its walls painted for approximately $30,000. St. Luke the Evangelist in Whitby had field repair and sod work done for about $79,000. The board also relo- cated 28 portables and in- stalled walkways and wiring for them at approximately $250,000. One man, one dream, one goal. Te rry Fox, who had lost a leg to bone cancer while still a teenager, dipped his toe in the Atlantic Ocean and set out on a mind-boggling quest: To run a marathon a day until he had conquered Canada and inspired Canadians to donate funds to cancer research. Along the way he drew admiration and provided inspira- tion to all he touched. Mr. Fox’s initial run, which he was forced to abandon just outside of Thunder Bay when the cancer spread to his lungs, raised $24.17 million, which surpassed his own goal of one dollar per Canadian citizen. Before he died in 1981, he’d been promised an annual run would be held in his name, and he laid out the ground rules himself. The run would be non-competitive, with no awards, just the goal of raising money for cancer research. One person’s determination and spirit inspired a nation, and then inspired the world. Mr. Fox is an undisputed Canadian hero who inspired an annual run that’s now held all over the world. As of last year, $360 million has been raised for cancer research through the event, according to the Terry Fox Run website. And some 50 nations know all about Terry Fox and his courage: they hold runs each year to help raise funds for cancer research. Cancer is a disease that’s touched many lives and still hasn’t been eradicated. The Canadian Cancer Society estimates there will be 149,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed this year, with 69,500 deaths. Amazing things can happen with the effort of just one individual, and that is the lesson Terry Fox taught us. Each person must realize his or her efforts on Sept. 18 will make all the difference. Here in Durham thousands participate in locations all over the region to help in the fight against can- cer. One dollar and a pleasant late-summer stroll on a Sunday morning. It’s so little to ask for keeping Terry’s dream alive, and improving the odds for thousands of cancer patients. Start a family tree for hurricane relief To the editor: As individuals we are overwhelmed by the news coming from New Orleans and the tragedy and travesty going on there. We wonder what we can do to help. I am writing to suggest that people create a family tree around themselves in order to help the people in New Orleans. I am going to send a set amount of money to an organi- zation officially sponsoring New Orleans for new housing such as the Canadian Red Cross, The Salvation Army, or my church. I am then going to phone all of my family and extended family members to suggest that they send money, and then suggest that they phone all of their family members in turn for them to send whatever money they can afford by mail, phone or e-mail. I suggest all of your readers do the same thing, and we will have families helping families, the way life is meant to be. Students, teachers impacted by cancer I t’s easy to understand the appeal of Te rry Fox for those who were alive in 1981. During the first Marathon of Hope, you couldn’t open a news- paper without seeing his face, Whitby teacher Sharon Court noted earlier this week. Te rry began his mission to run across Canada and fundraise for can- cer research after losing his leg to bone cancer. His Marathon of Hope started in April 1980, in Newfoundland, but by September, cancer had spread to his lungs and his run stopped outside of Thunder Bay. He died in June 1981 at age 22. For the people who remember Terry, the creation of his legacy became a very personal thing and they were crushed when he couldn’t finish. “I think a lot of people felt angry because he had been robbed (by can- cer),” said Mrs. Court. “At that time it felt like it was a failure, but if you look back now, you realize it was successful for other reasons like cancer research.” On Friday, Sept. 16, Mrs. Court walked with students from across Dur- ham to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Terry Fox run-walk. She was one of five members on the John Dryden Public School team whose life has been affected by cancer. The three students joining her all have parents battling cancer and the school’s principal, Rob Johansen, lost his father to it last year. In February, Mrs. Court’s husband Bruce was diagnosed with cancer. Al- though his form of it is less serious compared to others, she says he feels some of the advancements in research were made possible because of re- search made possible from funding the Terry Fox Run continues to pro- vide. The advancements include anti- nausea medications and white blood cell injections that weren’t available 20 years ago. For the students joining staff and teachers on the walk who weren’t even born during Terry’s time, they have their own Terry Foxes to remember and run for -- their mothers and fa- thers, brothers and sisters, even them- selves. Like Terry, they’ve been robbed, even if they or their loved ones have survived. From them, cancer has sto- len laughs, time and security. Although the Terry Fox Run con- tinues to bring people together every year, his biggest accomplishment will come when it’s finally cured, for good. NEWS ADVERTISER More than 800 speeding charges handed out by police in first week DURHAM — More than 800 drivers -- including one going almost twice the 60 km-h speed limit -- were ticketed when Durham Regional Police launched a school zone safety blitz across the region for the first week of school. In total, police laid 1,079 charges during ‘Operation In the Zone 2’, from Sept. 6 to 9. By far the majority of those charges, 805, were laid against drivers caught speeding in school zones, police said. Among those charged in the blitz was a driver travelling at a speed of 113 km-h in the 60 km-h zone on Rossland Road near All Saints High School in Whitby. Another motorist was clocked at 113 km-h in a 50 km-h community safety zone. Ye t another driver is facing a careless driving charge after being spotted reading while driving, police said. While the annual back to school blitz is over, Durham police are reminding drivers they’ll continue to monitor speed and other driving habits in school zones. Back to school costs drivers By Danielle Milley Staff Writer DURHAM — Mark Simmons is about to embark on the expe- rience of a lifetime. It’s going to be a life without the comforts of home — ham- burgers, Diet Pepsi and The Simpsons are some of the things he’ll miss — but the 29-year-old Durham resident is sure his ex- perience in Accra, Ghana is one that will enrich his life in ways he can now only imagine. Speaking at his mother’s Cour- tice home before his Sept. 21 departure, Mr. Simmons seemed excited and prepared for his five- month volunteer internship. It was March when he saw the posting on a not-for-profit job board and decided to apply for the position through Canadian Crossroads International. He’d been toying with the idea of going overseas for two years. “Every time I read about some- one’s experience it sounded like a wonderful thing to do,” he said. CCI interviewed him and he soon found out he would be heading to Ghana to do com- puter training. He is going to be setting up a computer network at the West African AIDS Founda- tion (WAAF) office. “I’m going there to teach them how to use computers and use them to make their jobs more ef- ficient,” he said. When most people imagine volunteering in Africa, it in- cludes visions of healing the sick or feeding the hungry, but Mr. Simmons’ notes his job is impor- tant too. “It will allow them to reach more people and do their work quicker so they can concentrate on the more important things,” he said. Mr. Simmons also gets the op- portunity to work in the AIDS hospice and travel to villages to help with volunteer testing. “That’s probably the stuff I’m most excited about,” he said. To pursue this next phase of his life, Mr. Simmons is quitting his job as a web administrator for a not-for-profit organization in Toronto. “I hope this is going to open a door, be a new chapter for me,” he said, admitting leaving “is a little scary. “I’m at the point where I want to do something new and I’ve found if you take risks it can be scary but they usually work out.” Mr. Simmons always had a bit of the travelling bug — previ- ously venturing to Ecuador on an eco-tour — and Africa was on the list. The trip combines his desire to travel with his drive to help people. “The main reason is I’ve worked with not-for-profit groups for most of my career so I have an interest in doing work that helps people,” he said. “And I’ve always wanted to go to Africa, it’s like a childhood dream.” After Mr. Simmons applied he was surprised to learn there was so much competition for the po- sitions. Craig Anderson is a pro- gram officer with CCI. He said over the last few years they’ve changed the way the program is r un and now fewer volunteers are sent overseas. Mr. Simmons is one of two Ontarians leaving for WAAF in September. CCI is a 40-year-old interna- tional, non-profit organization funded by the Canadian Interna- tional Development Agency and other government and non-gov- ernment supporters, as well as international donors. It organiz- es partnerships between organi- zations in the south and Canada. The Ontario office works with India, Kenya, Togo and Ghana. “Now with our partner over- seas we develop a special job criteria of the kind of volunteer we need,” Mr. Anderson said. There are always more appli- cants than positions. “Typically we get hundreds of applicants — dozens of quali- fied people for a handful of posi- tions,” he said. Qualified applicants are in- terviewed — usually by a panel — and CCI makes a recommen- dation to the overseas partner (sometimes they’re included in the interview by speakerphone) who sees the interview summary and resume before making a final decision. Mr. Simmons’ reaction was mixed when he found out he had been selected. “I was very excited and then after a few days a little bit ner- vous because I realized it was going to be a complete change for my life,” he said. As part of his training, Mr. Sim- mons has been learning more about the customs, culture and citizens of Ghana. “A lot of the cultural informa- tion is what I found most inter- esting,” he said. “For example, it’s considered rude to hand someone something with your left hand and I’m left handed.” The CCI training has focused on cultural awareness, health, and the purpose of why they’re going over. To that end he spent two weeks with the AIDS Com- mittee of Lon- don, which is WAAF’s partner organi- zation. His stay there included a visit to an AIDS hos- pice. “It definitely gave me a lot of insight into HIV and AIDS in Canada and by exten- sion how it will be in Africa,” Mr. Simmons said. Mr. Simmons also did train- ing through NetCorps, which is funding his internship. NetCorps is an international internship program managed by a nine- member coalition, of which CCI is a part. It is funded by Indus- try Canada and is a part of the federal government’s Youth Em- ployment Strategy. The program is open to those between the ages of 19 to 30. When it began as a pilot proj- ect in 1997 it was the first that recruited volunteers in the in- formation and communications technology field. In addition to training, re- searching on his own time and brushing up on his IT knowl- edge, Mr. Simmons has been busy fundraising. Each volunteer is required to raise $2,000 to not only help with CCI’s operating costs, but also to raise awareness about the organization and the cause. He’s contacted service clubs and corporations. As well, he set up a booth at venues across the region to raise aware- ness and money. For information about donating, call Mr. Simmons at 905-436-7453. “People have been very supportive,” he said. “That’s re- ally increased my enthusiasm about what I’m doing.” Some costs associated with the trip — flight, vaccinations, train- ing — are covered for volunteers, and they are placed with a host family and given a modest living allowance. “The reality is they’re almost certainly better paid than the workers in the organization,” said CCI’s Mr. Anderson. “It’s not enough for anyone to save but it is enough to live comfortably in the country they’re in.” There were a few things to con- sider before Mr. Simmons ac- cepted the position — he would be away from his friends and family for months, including during the holidays and his 30th birthday — but in the end the decision was clear. “I was a little scared but I re- alized that if I go I may end up regretting it but if I don’t go I’ll definitely regret it,” he said. “And, I really don’t think I’ll regret it.” newsdurhamregion.com searchkeyword: africaghanasimmons Heading to Africa to help AIDS organization Merle Robillard/ News Advertiser photo Mark Simmons with some of the books he’ll be packing for his trip to Ghana. I see and I remember... I do and I understand” -E.H. KNOWLEDGE WITH UNDERSTANDING It’s back to school time again!! We want our chil- dren to want to succeed, to enjoy the quest and to work hard. What can we do to help? A quick review of the three rules of motivation will help. We can- not motivate children. We can create lots of stress for them (and us), we can complicate their lives; we can insist; we can punish; we can see that the home- work gets done. But motivation comes from inside. A New Attitude for School This Year By R. N. Whitehead Children motivate themselves when they discover we are offering them something they want. Your child is al- ready motivated to do those things that they feel are important to them. They lose moti- vation when they are expected to do things they do not understand and that do not appear to be important to them. No matter how hard it is to believe, our kids are capable of logical and rational thought. How they are acting is a di- rect result of some conclusion or feel- ing they have about themselves. If they don’t appear motivated, it’s be- cause, deep down, they have concluded that giving the appearance of trying is not in their best interest. If I can’t succeed – don’t try!! The key for us, as parents, is to make sure that our expectations are properly understood at our child’s level, not just at ours. Ask me why you should learn to succeed in school and I will tell you stuff about success, self-esteem, graduation, university or col- lege, getting a good job and so on. Good answer, but what if you are 10 years old? What does that answer mean? It has absolutely no motivation power to the child at all. It must mean something at your own child’s level. Drive-in came out of fire How many of you remember watching a movie on the big screen from the comfort of your own car? The Te Pee Drive-in is well remembered today in the hearts of many who grew up in Pickering. Originally, the Te Pee Motel opened in August 1946 in Pickering on Frenchman’s Bay Road (now Liverpool Road) on the west side between Hwy. 2 and what is now Hwy. 401. It had a main hotel building and 58 small cottages to accommodate 174 guests. The cabins were cone-shaped in the form of teepees. The motel was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Lyle W. Jones and was in operation 12 months of the year. It catered to tourists for summer and winter fishing and other sport activities on the bay. In February 1953 the motel burned to the ground. Later, in the 1960s the hotel was turned into the Te Pee Drive-in. The cottages were gone and the hotel became the concession building. The Te Pee Drive-in was one of two drive-in theatres in Picker- ing. The other was the Bay Ridges Drive-in located along Valley Farm Road, south off Hwy. 2. Known simply as ‘The Te Pee,’ it had in–car heaters so it could be open all year round. The Te Pee was taken down to make way for Lo- blaws Super Centre, which opened Nov. 13, 1985. Parents, teachers have roles to play in preventing bullying With technology can come serious dangers that can contribute to a teen’s loss of self-esteem and self-worth. It is called cyber-bullying and with the introduction of Internet messaging systems, cellphones and excessive computer use, teens can hide anonymously behind a computer screen and verbally abuse other students. This type of bullying has become a serious problem, and it is the responsibil- ity of parents, teachers and stu- dents alike to help in preventing the growing problem. Over the past few years, instant messaging programs have be- come increasingly popular with students. It has become a major part of their culture. Although it can be used as a source of com- munication between friends and family, it can also been used to harass others behind the security of a computer screen. During the summer months, teens have more time to spend on these programs, which may lead to excessive and unnecessary use. Innocent ‘chat’ can drastically change into gossip, which then evolves into arguing and then full- blown harassment. These mes- saging programs are incredibly easy to download and can be an effective tool for bullies because they can mask themselves in a sort of anonymity. Bullies can ex- tend their harassment into their victim’s home, making the harm much more effective. Parents need to ensure they are monitoring the amount of time their teen spends on the computer. Some parents may not appreciate the severity of cyber-bullying and need to prepare themselves and their children if such an incident were to occur. Computers that have Internet access in students’ rooms are a main ingredient for destruction. Students are not usu- ally monitored if they are secured behind a closed door, so anything can happen without the parents knowing. Parents also have to take pre- cautions with new cellphone plans that provide Internet access. Internet on cellphones can allow a student to check their e-mail, send text messages or participate in in- stant messaging to other phones. Using text messages on phones for destructive purposes can also be considered another form of cyber- bullying. It is the responsibility of the par- ents, the education system and students to understand the sever- ity of cyber-bullying. More pro- grams must be enforced in schools and parents need to become aware of these problems in order to pre- vent such destructive behaviour. Unfortunately, many students are getting away with harassing other students through cyber-bullying because officials are powerless to accuse students unless the ‘chat’ has crossed the line into death threats or other criminal acts. Also, an anonymous bully can be very difficult to trace. Bullying is bullying and ha- rassment is harassment no mat- ter what method is being used. Whether a student is verbally at- tacking somebody else through words or through font, the attack is still occurring. Communication skills are being demolished be- cause real conversation is being replaced with font. Students, with the help of teachers and their par- ents, need to learn that effective problem-solving skills cannot be acquired from behind a computer screen. With everybody’s help, we can ensure bullying of all sorts is left in the past. Katalin McLean is an 18-year- old Ajax resident. So it’s really no surprise that according to the latest Gallup Survey, 90 per cent of all people who go to a chiropractor say their care was effective. Chiropractic care centres on the spinal column and the nervous system and offers a “whole body” approach to healing. It makes sense once you think about it. The spinal column houses your spinal cord and spinal nerves branch out from between your vertebrate to areas all over your body. A misalignment of a vertebrate may cause a pinched or inhibited spinal nerve that may result in headaches, lower back pain and numerous other ailments. That’s why spinal adjustments can help the body heal more effectively. By using physical examinations and X-rays when necessary, chiropractors detect, locate and correct spinal misalignment (also called subluxation). Rather than treating just your symptoms, chiropractors are trained to find the root of the problem and correct it. Once the problem is identified, the solution varies. In addition to manual and instrumental adjustments, your chiropractor may recommend other procedures or health regimens. Remember, chiropractic care works with your body’s natural strengths. Care to know more about chiropractic? Now that you know why chiropractic is so effective for so many people, why not make an appointment for an initial consultation to talk about the type of care and patient services the office provides. The three Dolphins’ teams played an old nemesis, the Stam- peders, and returned home from Nelson Stadium with only a tie to show for three Central Ontario Minor Football League games. The Dolphins peewees man- aged a 14-14 draw, while the atoms suffered their first defeat of the season, 36-29, to drop to 2-1 on the season. Meanwhile, the tykes suffered a 30-0 defeat, dropping their league mark to 2- 1. All three Dolphins teams are on home turf at Kinsmen Park in Pickering on Sunday against Dur- ham Region rival Oshawa Hawk- eyes on Sunday. The tykes play at 9:30 a.m., followed by the atoms at 11:30 a.m. and peewees at 1:30 p.m. Both Ajax-Pickering and Bur- lington peewee squads entered the early-season battle undefeat- ed and that didn’t change as a result of a rare tie. The Dolphins trailed twice in the contest, only to rally to tie up the high-inten- sity contest between two squads. Offensively, wide receiver Kyle Goffe accumulated more than 100 yards receiving, while also scoring the game-tying touch- down late in the third quarter on a 50-yard bomb from quarter- back Andrew Lim. Fullback Sean Carter scored the first Dolphins’ touchdown on a two-yard plunge late in the first quarter. Centre Ian To bias and left guard Kyle Was- son had outstanding efforts for the teal and orange. The Dolphins’ ‘Teal Curtain’ defence played up to their name, especially defensive end Peter Iyamu and defensive tackles Kirk Thurston and Chee Maduekwe, who were relentless. Free safety Jed Reid and linebacker Charlie Tak also supplied solid play. Goffe was the Dolphins’ of- fensive player of the game, Kirk Thurston was the defensive star, while Reid was the special teams player of the contest. The atom contest was a re- match of last year’s champion- ship game and the Dolphins held a slim 23-22 lead at halftime, but were overtaken in the final half. Down 36-29 with the Dolphins’ offence on the field with 40 sec- onds remaining and the ball on the Burlington 35-yard line. Ajax- Pickering attempted two running plays and finally a pass attempt from quarterback Jeff McIlravey to receiver Kurlan Cadet, but each fell short. Running back Shaq Lawrence scored touchdowns in each of the first, second and third quarters. Running back Cole Tudor scored the other Dolphins’ major. Defensive leaders in the con- test were Alex Horodnyk, Owen Eccleston, Alex O’Donnell, Spen- cer Stewart, Jaiden McBride and Connor Patterson, who supplied another key interception that led to a quick Dolphins’ touchdown. In the tyke contest, the Dol- phins trailed 24-0 at halftime. The Ajax-Pickering defence re- grouped in the second half, limit- ing a potent Stampeders’ offence to only one touchdown, scored on its last series of the game. The Dolphins’ defence was led by middle linebacker Don- dre Wright, nose guard Nickolas Te zak, along with defensive play- ers Bryan Peters, Leigh Phillips, Eric Micikyan and Lee Hessner. Ajax-Pickering Dolphins’ running back Shaq Lawrence runs the ball for a touchdown as fullback Dustin Kaupp, left, leads the blocking during atom football action against the Burlington Stampeders at Nelson Stadium last Sunday. St rikers fall just short of Ontario Cup Ajax soccer boys to battle Glen Shields for CSL Cup By Al Rivett Sports Editor AJAX — The Ajax Strikers GTX Mobile Wash 93s boys’ under-12 rep soccer team came agonizingly close to drinking from the Ontario Cup. The team played at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan last Saturday in the Cup final, with the St. Catharines Shooters edging the Strikers 1-0. “It was a hard-fought game, but it just wasn’t our day,” noted Strikers’ head coach Mike Campitelli. “Our guys worked very hard.” Two weeks prior to the Ontario Cup final, the Strikers met anoth- er Ajax Soccer Club under-12 rep squad -- Ajax Primera -- in the Cup semifinal at Birchmount Stadium on Aug. 27. The Strikers got past favoured Primera 2-0. The Strikers’ Cup odyssey started June 11 with many of the top teams in the age group playing down to determine the top team in Ontario. The Strikers played off in a tourna- ment in Caledon with four other top teams. There, the Strikers won the event, thus earning the right to proceed to the Cup quarter-finals. Playing the quarter-final game against the Mississauga Falcons - - the age group’s top-ranked team in Ontario at that time -- the Ajax Strikers took the favoured Falcons to overtime, beating them 3-2. In addition to being Ontario Cup finalists, the Strikers still have one more major championship on the horizon -- the Central Soccer League (CSL) Cup. Ajax plays Glen Shields at Milliken Mills in Markham on Sept. 24. Twenty-nine teams started in the CSL Cup playdowns. “It will be a fantastic season, win or lose, says Campitelli, adding that his team also won the annual Ajax tournament and Richmond Hill titles, as well as finishing fourth at the competitive Niagara Falls Invita- tional earlier this season. The core of his Ajax Strikers, says Campitelli, has been together for the past five years. The squad was first organized as a developmental ‘B’ squad, serving as a feeder team for the ‘A’ team in the age group. Originally, Campitelli recalls he didn’t have enough players , so he re- cruited from the elementary schools and the house league ranks. “Some had never played orga- nized soccer before and some couldn’t afford to play organized soccer,” says Campitelli, who’s as- sisted by Kevin Tryon, Leo Millan and Steve Williams. Most of all, it was a diverse group of players who were chosen for their heart and desire to excel in soccer. “Some of them don’t have any- thing else. This is what they have and they put everything into it. There are no superstars. They all play like a team and train year round.” Armed with sponsorship to help keep the team together, the Strikers have enjoyed a run of success in their five seasons. Two years ago, the Ajax Strikers qualified for the Walt Disney World Classic soccer event in Orlando, Fla. The team, says Campitelli, raised around $15,000 to cover expenses for the tournament and proceeded to capture the gold medal, defeating Florida’s Orange Country Strikers 1-0 in the final. Campitelli says his next major undertaking for the team is to raise funds for a trip to Argentina for a week-long training stint during the March break. “That’s where the best soccer is played in the world. I want to see them train at that level,” he says. But there are also remarkable moments of pure satisfaction and unbound appreciation. That’s what it is to work in long term care where every day we are witness to the full spectrum of emotions– from tenderness and caring, to trials and struggles of everyday living, to loss, to the small triumphs of a life lived more fully and completely. How we choose to respond to these situations reveals just how significant our responsibilities are, and how large our hearts can be. To be a part of OMNI is to understand that what we do on a daily basis improves lives. We believe that our people are Everyday Heroes™ who live life beyond themselves to enhance the lives of others. From the small rays of light, to words of encouragement, to random acts of kindness, these gestures capture the essence of who they are. If you are registered or eligible for registration with the College of Dietitians of Ontario we would like to provide you with an opportunity to utilize your skills through visits to our LT C Homes for the completion of clinical nutrition assessments, quarterly reviews, menu planning and follow-ups on high-risk residents.
