C hief stresses need
for proactive policing
By Jeff Mitchell
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Durham Region’s
new police chief says the most ef-
fective way to combat the rising
violence evident throughout the
GTA is to engage in proactive po-
licing.
Vern White, introduced to the
media Thursday morning in Os-
hawa, outlined plans for extensive
community consultation and co-
operation with neighbouring po-
lice forces as he takes the reigns of
the Durham Regional Police Ser-
vice.
“My suggestion is there’s no-
body we won’t work with,” the new
chief said.
Chief designate White, 46, as-
sumes leadership of the service
at a time when a proliferation of
guns and violent crime is fore-
most on the minds of many res-
idents throughout the GTA. Al-
though Durham has so far been
spared the spike in gun violence
evident in Toronto -- there’s been
just one murder in Durham this
year, a beating death in Oshawa --
many feel it’s just a matter of time
until illegal guns and gang activity
emerge as prominent issues.
Chief designate White, who
starts work next Tuesday and will
take his oath of office Sept. 12,
stressed the importance of con-
sultation with educators, social
workers, community leaders and
other police services in preventing
crime.
“The challenges faced in this
area today aren’t different than
they are elsewhere,” he told re-
porters. “They’re just at a different
level.
“All too often, we find ourselves
reacting to challenges,” he said.
The new chief, a former assis-
tant commissioner with the RCMP,
was the unanimous choice of Dur-
ham’s Police Services Board after
an extensive search, said board
chair Doug Moffatt. He said the
post was applied for by numer-
ous candidates from outside and
within the service, and that list was
pared down to seven who were
interviewed for the job.

Sewage portion
to rise more than
25 per cent on
commercial side
By Mike Ruta
Staff Writer
DURHAM — The sewage
portion of Durham’s devel-
opment charges are set to
go up on Oct. 1.
The residential rate for
a single-detached home
would rise from $3,114 to
$3,459, an increase of nine
per cent. The commercial
rate would increase by
more than 12 per cent, from
0.89 cents to 1.00, and then
by a further 12 per cent the
following year to $1.12 per
square foot.
The changes are outlined
in the recently-released Re-
gional Development Charge
Background Study. The
regional finance
and administra-
tion commit-
tee will consider
adopting the
study and passing
the development
charge bylaw at
its Sept. 7 meet-
ing. On the same
day, at regional
council, the pub-
lic has a chance
to comment. The time line
would then see regional
council finalize the bylaw at
its Sept. 28 meeting.
Clarington Mayor John
Mutton, chairman of the
finance and administra-
tion committee, expects
few deputations on the
amended bylaw, which he
described as pru-
dent.
“This is the
perfect time to
recapture that
money,” he said.
“The whole goal
of development
charges is so you
don’t have to go
to the tax base.”
He doubted the
higher commer-
cial rate would have an
impact on new businesses
locating here.
“The growth is happen-
ing no matter what the costs
are out here,” said Mayor
Mutton.
The increases are to pay
for the large rise in the cost
of the Courtice Water Pol-
lution Control Plant and
for expanding incineration
capacity at the York-Dur-
ham Duffins Creek sewage
plant. The latter is a $58
million cost not previously
included in the 2003 devel-
opment charges study. The
cost of the Courtice sewage
plant, currently budgeted
at around $165 million, has
increased by $26.7 million
since 2003.
The Region in 2003 had
planned to expand its bio-
solids storage facilities at
the Corbett Creek WPCP,
as at the time it counted
on land application to get
rid of the sewage plant
waste material. As a result
of changes to the Nutrient
Management Act, however,
the Region cannot rely on
land application nearly as
much.
Durham Region is also
considering changing the
definition of retail use in the
bylaw to include self-stor-
age mini-warehouses.
In other housing catego-
ries, the sewage compo-
nent of the DC would rise
by $285, to $3,459 for each
new single-detached house
built. The increase would
be $239 for low-density
multiples, including town-
houses, $165 for apartments
with two bedrooms or more
and $106 for apartments
with one bedroom or less.

EDITORIAL
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Pit bull ban
misses real issue
W hile Ontario’s pit bull ban has officially come into
effect, it’s questionable how effective this new leg-
islation will be.
Attorney General Michael Bryant’s decision may play well
at the polls as the majority of voters are frustrated by the
number of dog attacks, but only time will tell whether this
new act has the teeth to reduce the number of dog attacks.
Having pit bulls or any bad-tempered dogs muzzled in
public makes sense, but the legislation becomes compli-
cated with grandfathered clauses and sterilization require-
ments which will make enforcement next to impossible.
We all hope that another child won’t be mauled by a pit
bull or any dog for that matter, but many attacks occur in the
home and there’s nothing in this legislation that will prevent
such an attack.
There’s no debating there have been too many vicious at-
tacks by pit bulls or that they can do a lot more damage than
most breeds of dogs. The more the pit bulls’ reputation as a
‘tough dog’ grew, the more attractive they became to a lot of
owners who frankly shouldn’t have the right to raise any ani-
mal at all. It’s those people who have a pit bull leash in one
hand and an appointment with their probation officer in the
other who are to blame. But taking a breed of dog away won’t
turn these people into law-abiding citizens.
If Ontario took all guns off the streets, it wouldn’t stop the
criminal element from committing crimes. Instead of a gun
they might carry knives, crowbars, etc. So we can fully expect
to see the dregs of society pick another ‘tough’ breed to fill
the void.
Those responsible owners of pit bulls have come out of the
wood work with the introduction of the Dog Owners’ Liabil-
ity Act and have always been vocal whenever someone in the
public or media supports pit bull legislation. But they have
equal culpability in all this mess because they have been
silent far too long to the growing problem of thugs owning
these breeds.
While it’s admirable that some sort of action has finally
been taken to deal with the pit bull issue, Ontario may find
itself pressured to add new breeds to the list.
Green bin waste collection won’t work here
To the editor:
Re: ‘Green bins preparing to expand’, Mike Ruta column,
Aug. 19.
It is nice to see we are expanding our recycling to green bin
waste collection. Although Pickering and Ajax have been col-
lecting yard waste for several years, it does not collect from
condo/townhome residences separately.
I currently live in a 120 unit condo/townhome environ-
ment and when I put out my yard waste it is picked up by
Miller Waste as normal garbage. I don’t think the green waste
will have a chance in my environment. I pay my land taxes
just like a single home owner, but am not treated the same.
I want to help the environment and look what the city does
- makes it worse.
Green waste will not survive here. Take a look around,
we have a high number of townhome/condos in the area,
not including all of the people who live in apartments that
could have a chance to be a part of this great opportunity.
Condo/townhome owners need to speak up and voice their
opinions.

Research for series reveals
a new perspective on
agricultural industry
F arming is tougher than it looks.
That’s the impression I came away
with in researching and writing a
four-part series on the agricultural in-
dustry in Ajax and Pickering that begins
in the Sunday edition.
Fa r mers don’t complain or ask for
sympathy, they just share the challenges
they face. By raising awareness, the few
farmers who remain want to foster a
better relationship with the ever ex-
panding number of urban neighbours.
There are stories of farmers’ fields
being used as dumps, a field of alfalfa
hay being used for a game of soccer
and of course there is the issue of crop
theft. Not to mention the hassle traffic
and congestion have on rural roads.
One farmer jokes that he should take his
lunch with him when he goes to his field
across the road because it is such a long
journey.
Many suburbanites look at the acres,
upon acres of farmland abutting an
urban area and see only dollar signs.
They think of how much money that
family will make when the inevitable
developer comes along wanting to build
a subdivision.
Through speaking with farmers, it’s
clear most farmers don’t want to cash
in. They love what they do, it’s who they
are. Those who sell are usually forced
to because their livelihood is no longer
viable because of a shrinking land mass,
not to mention the new residents who
complain about manure or noise or
pesticides.
There are those who sell to have a
cushy retirement, but they just might
deserve it after working from dawn until
dusk for 50 years -- it’s unlikely any of us
could cut it as a farmer for more than a
week.
The issues touched on in the series are
those articulated by a handful of people.
There are, no doubt, much more that
could be examined. For example, the
issues surrounding Pickering’s Duffins
Rouge Agricultural Preserve, as well as
the pressing issue of the importance of
a locally grown food supply.
But don’t let what the series is not,
take away from what it is. It is an insight
into an industry that has deep roots in
Ajax and Pickering. An industry that
is struggling with pressures and chal-
lenges as the area changes and grows.
The next time you’re driving and a
tractor gets in your way, don’t get upset,
be patient and realize the person in the
tractor is trying to make a living. Un-
derstanding from the public might help
make the final days or years for these
local farmers just a little bit easier.

seven people ... any one of those
people would have made an excel-
lent chief,” Mr. Moffatt said.
Chief designate White is a 24-
year veteran of policing. Much of
his career has been spent in the
far North, where he served in the
three territories. Among his career
highlights was his leadership of
the investigative team that probed
the murders of nine gold miners
during a bitter strike in the early
1990s in Yellowknife.
During the three-month search
for a new top cop -- outgoing Chief
Kevin McAlpine announced his
retirement in May -- there’s been
much speculation about whether
the new boss would come from
within the ranks of Durham police.
In fact, during a press conference
in May, Chief McAlpine said he’d
taken steps to groom his top brass
to assume leadership.
“One of my jobs was to make
sure senior leaders of this service
were exposed to all kinds of chal-
lenges,” the chief said in May.
The issue of hiring from outside
the force has been contentious in
the past. Chief McAlpine, who was
hired from the Peterborough po-
lice service, met with opposition
from the rank and file in Durham
when he assumed his post in the
fall of 1997, and had a sometimes
turbulent relationship with his of-
ficers. In early 2000 he stared down
an uprising
among of-
ficers that
included a
non-confi-
dence vote
and an open
call for his
resignation.
Thursday
morning
To m Bell,
vice-presi-
dent of the Durham Regional Po-
lice Association, chose his words
carefully when asked about the
hiring of Chief designate White.
“It’s the (police services) board’s
decision to make,” Mr. Bell said.
“We did feel -- and do feel --
there’s a lot of talent within our
own service.”
The union’s current contract ex-
pires at the end of this year and
negotiations on a new deal are ex-
pected to begin early in 2006. The
main issue for Durham cops will
be maintaining wage parity with
officers in similar services, Mr. Bell
said.
Mr. Bell -- who learned of the
new chief’s identity at the same
time reporters did -- said the
union is willing to work with the
new boss.
“We will extend our hand to the
new chief,” he said. “We both have
the same (goal), which is the safety
of our citizens.”
Chief designate White said he’ll
work to gain the confidence of
rank and file officers.
“No matter what I do or say,
there will be concerns,” he said.
“All I can do over the next few
years is prove I’m deserving of
being the chief of police.”
The new chief’s contract is for a
five-year term.

Staff Writer
DURHAM — Two young Whitby men
have launched a constitutional chal-
lenge of a new province-wide ban on
pit bulls that came into effect Monday.
Marty Gobin, 17, and Adam McEwan,
18, say the ban is unconstitutional and
an infringement on personal property
rights. The pair was recently granted a
motion to have the case referred to the
Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
“We figure the quicker we take a
stand against this the better,” said Mr.
McEwan, who called the ban unrea-
sonable and ill-founded. “We’re taking
a pro-liberty stance against something
which appears to be tyranny.”
The pit bull ban requires owners
to spay or neuter their dogs by Oct.
28, and for them to be muzzled and
leashed in public. Owners can keep
their existing dogs as long as they com-
ply with these requirements. The sale
and importation of pit bulls are also
prohibited as of Aug. 29, however pit
bull puppies born before Nov. 27 can
be kept.
Although neither Mr. Gobin nor Mr.
McEwan own a pit bull, they say a
breed-specific ban provincially doesn’t
make sense.
Fines of up to $10,000, in addition to
jail sentences of up to six months, will
also be given to owners of any danger-
ous dog that bites, attacks or poses a
threat. Ontario Attorney General Mi-
chael Bryant, in introducing the new
bill last October, said the provincial
government is responding to concerns
of Ontarians by protecting people from
“these highly unpredictable dogs.”
Sylvie Koch, supervisor of Pickering-
Ajax-Whitby Animal Services, said the
new legislation may be an automatic
death sentence for some pit bulls be-
cause they are so hard to adopt out.
“I can’t see us adopting them out
because they do have to be neutered
and spayed, and because there’s such
a stigma attached to owning a pit bull;
they’re just not adoptable animals,” she
said. She added that leaves only one
alternative: “Putting them down.”
Although pounds and humane so-
cieties can still adopt out the animals
under the ban, some agencies say the
new legislation will mean more aban-
doned pit bulls by owners who can’t af-
ford to pay to spay or neuter their pets.
“They’re going to be dumping them
because they can’t afford to,” said Ruby
Richards, manager of the Humane So-
ciety of Durham Region. “The ones
that are abused, neglected, abandoned
-- we’re just going to end up with more
of that now.”
Ms. Richards said the humane soci-
ety’s mandate is not to kill, except in
cases of extreme aggression or terminal
illness. The new ban, however, may
force it to compromise that rule.

Battle on
to reduce
dropout rates
Re-evaluating curriculum
one avenue: union head
By Crystal Crimi
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Reducing curriculum
expectations could help lower dropout
rates, said a local teachers’ union presi-
dent.
During a recent address to more than
500 teachers attending the Elemen-
tary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario’s
(ETFO) annual meeting, Education
Minister Gerard Kennedy vowed to re-
duce the province’s 32 per cent dropout
rate in 2003-04. He challenged teach-
ers to each assist one more struggling
student under age 12 so they are helped
before reaching high school, when it
may be too late.
“It’s about getting that intervention
at an early age before they get to high
school,” said Rachel Gencey, Durham’s
ETFO president.
She said students in early grades may
not be able to recognize letters they
should, such as those in their name.
“I can remember the year I taught
Grade 1, there was a student you could
already tell had issues,” she said.
“It’s not always a learning disability,
sometimes it’s a matter of what they’re
exposed to and what they’re not.”
When kids start school behind their
peers and don’t get help, they can fall
further behind, she said. By the time
they get to high school, they may be
frustrated and bored and drop out.
Te achers will work toward the chal-
lenge to help more struggling youths,
but there are concerns over the amount
of time to do so, said Ms. Gencey.
She said one of the comments Mr.
Kennedy made, was if the Province is
asking for teachers to do more, it would
take more off their plate in return.
She said some things that could free
up teacher time are more specialist
teachers and lower curriculum expecta-
tions so there’s less to get through each
year.
“It’s been almost 10 years since that
curriculum was in place,” she said.

Soon-to-be Grade 9
students learn the
ropes ahead of time
By Crystal Crimi
Staff Writer
DURHAM — With new faces,
crowded and large hallways, and
rumours of hard work, high school
can be an intimating experience
for first-timers.
To ease the transition from el-
ementary to high school, Durham
Continuing Education recently
offered soon-to-be minor niners
a ‘Getting Ready for High School
Program’.
“High school’s very different
than elementary school,” said
teacher Janice Moy to a group of
mostly quiet students spending a
summer Monday at Donevan CI in
Oshawa.
Open to all Catholic and public
students, the free five-day course
offered kids a chance to see the
curriculum and meet some of the
new faces that await them.
Danielle Andrus was visibly anx-
ious as she sat near the front of
the class decorated with diagrams,
maps and posters. Danielle ap-
peared to listen attentively while
the teacher spoke.
In the hallway during break time,
Danielle admitted she’s nervous
about high school.
“Yeah a little,” she said. “Just to
meet new people, new teachers.”
Along with being intimidated by
the physical size of her new school,
she’s also nervous about the work-
load she’s heard it includes.
“I’m not really good at some sub-
jects and I might need to lower my
level,” said Danielle. “I’m just wor-
ried about how hard it’s going to
be.”
In class, Mrs. Moy discussed sub-
jects they’ll have to take -- math,
English, science, French, geogra-
phy, history, art, and phys-ed. She
also explained what high school
credits are, semester and non-se-
mester classes, and provided tips
for success.
“Course outline: important piece
of paper,” said Mrs. Moy. “It’s prob-
ably the first piece of paper that
should be hole punched and put in
your binder.”
She said it will tell students the
requirements of the program, ma-
terials, and any fees associated.
“It’s challenging I’d say, but if
you’re all really organized, you’ll
do well I’m sure,” said Mrs. Moy.
Materials she suggested in-
cluded three-ring binders, hole-
punched paper, a pen and pencil,
eraser, ruler, calculator, and pencil
crayons.
She said students also need reli-
able classmates from each subject
to pick up homework assignments
and fill them in when they’ve
missed class.
“You’re going to have to get to
know a whole lot of people,” said
Mrs. Moy.
Along with discussing how to
ask for help, learning techniques
and literacy tests, Mrs. Moy also
answered questions.
“Do they do surprised tests?”
asked a student.
“Pop quizzes? They might,” an-
swered Mrs. Moy. “That depends
on your teacher, but you get to
know the people.
Another student asked if they
would get agendas, to which Mrs.
Moy said they would.
“And I do suggest you use it,” said
Mrs. Moy.
A boy was curious if the rumours
about initiation day and getting
picked on during the first week of
high school are true.
“I wouldn’t be worried about it,”
said Mrs. Moy, adding she doesn’t
think it happens.
One student said they were
afraid of get-
ting lost.
“It’s OK be-
cause every-
one gets lost
on the first
day,” said
Mrs. Moy.
“You’ll get
used to
where you
are,” she
added. “It’s
like any new place.”
Near the end of her first day
in preparation class, Danielle said
some of her jitters were gone.
“It makes me feel a lot relieved,”
she said. “I’ll have a head start on
time management and math.”
School starts Tuesday, Sept. 6.

More money sought for post-secondary education
Premiers planning summit
By Crystal Crimi
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Local college and university
officials and students hope a post-secondary
education and skills summit planned for this
fall will bring more funding.
Intended to create a plan to keep Canada
competitive in the global economy, the sum-
mit, headed by Ontario Premier Dalton Mc-
Guinty and Quebec Premier Jean Charest, will
discuss the challenges of post-secondary edu-
cation with stakeholders, including students,
colleges, universities and businesses, and seek
more funding from the federal government.
For students, the biggest post-secondary
school challenge is cost, said Thomas Cough-
lan, president of the University of Ontario In-
stitute of Technology and Durham College stu-
dent association.
“Students are going into debt beyond their
control and beyond recovering from it even
when you’re done,” said Mr. Coughlan.
From the summit, he’d like to see anything to
help students financially, such as controlled tu-
ition costs and more subsidies instead of loans.
Gary Polonsky, president of UOIT and Durham
College, hopes it brings more money.
“I know it sounds crass but that’s the only
way to serve Canadian youth with top faculty,
top equipment, reasonable class sizes, etc,” said
Mr. Polonsky in an e-mail.
He said the biggest issue in post-secondary
education is keeping Canada a leading and
developed nation.
“Will our children and grandchildren have
the opportunity to create and enjoy the life-
style my generation took for granted, because
of our grandparents’ and parents’ vision and
values?” Mr. Polonsky continued. “Since the
world economy is being driven by knowledge,
how we create and disseminate knowledge will
answer that question. That boils down to how
we prioritize and invest in education.”
Mr. Charest has called for the federal govern-
ment to increase post-secondary funding to
1995 levels -- $2.2 billion more than today.

Writers group
celebrates decade
of creativity
and support
By Jillian Follert
Staff Writer
DURHAM — If you write,
you’re a writer.
The logic is simple
enough, but for those put-
ting pen to paper for the first
time or facing the dreaded
rejection slip, it can be a
daunting title to embrace.
“People think they can
only call themselves writers
if they’ve been published or
if they’re professional writ-
ers,” says Annette McLeod.
“But anyone who writes is
a writer -- especially if they
get rejection slips. We see
them as a badge of honour,
because it means you’re ac-
tually getting your work out
there.”
A writer and editor with
a daily newspaper, Ms.
McLeod is also
past-president of
the Writers’ Circle
of Durham Region
(WCDR), and says
the local collective
has given many
budding scribes
the confidence to
chase their liter-
ary dreams.
“The group is a
nice counterpoint
to the secluded act of writ-
ing,” says member Barbara
Hunt. “We’re there to en-
courage each other. Writing
can be a competitive, stress-
ful industry, so it’s good to
have support.
From journalists, editors
and speech writers, to poets,
novelists and playwrights,
the WCDR currently boasts
a dizzying array of expertise
spread out over
250 members of
all ages and back-
grounds.
In addi-
tion to support-
ing small grass
roots writing
circles that focus
on specialties like
children’s writing
and memoirs, the
circle publishes
a regular newsletter called
Word Weaver and holds
monthly breakfast meet-
ings that have featured guest
speakers like Moira Dann of
the Globe and Mail, and ac-
claimed author Betty Jane
Wylie. The group also or-
ganizes the annual Words
in Whitby celebration and
offers workshops hosted by
outside professionals and
members.
“A ny member who wants
to host a workshop can, so
we get all kinds of topics --
short story writing, copy ed-
iting, even sensual writing,”
says WCDR president Sherry
Hinman. “All the members
have their own unique tal-
ents and skills to share.”
One of the new events
planned for this fall is called
“Would You Turn the Page”
and will feature a profes-
sional literary agent and
book editor critiquing the
first pages of submitted
manuscripts.
“I was really nervous when
I submitted my work for this,
but these are the kinds of
things that help take away
your fear and build confi-
dence,” says WCDR member
Kevin Craig. “It’s the kind of
thing you have to learn to do.”

coming events, visit www.

Rugby silver at Games summer
highlight for Pickering’s Moonlight
Pickering teen plays
for Ontario under-18s
By Al Rivett
Sports Editor
PICKERING — It was a summer
of rucks, running and rewards for
Pickering teen John Moonlight.
The 18-year-old was never far
from a rugby field all summer as
he played the rough-and-tumble
game upwards of six times a week
on several teams, including the
Ajax Wanderers RFC under-18s
and men’s first team.
“It keeps me occupied,” says
Moonlight, a Dunbarton High
School graduate. “I get bored pret-
ty easily. It’s hard on my body, but
I like it -- it’s great.”
The highlight of Moonlight’s
summer, however, was represent-
ing Ontario as part of the prov-
ince’s under-18 rugby team at the
Canada Summer Games — the
largest sporting event in the na-
tion — in Regina recently. Play-
ing as a flanker, Moonlight helped
Ontario to a silver medal.
Although he and his Ontario
mates were gunning for gold, he’s
more than satisfied with a silver,
playing a tough B.C. side in the
Canada Games final. The differ-
ence in the gold-medal contest,
says Moonlight, was two key team-
mates who received red and yel-
low cards from the officials, thus
leaving Ontario shorthanded. The
result was a predictable 28-11 loss
to the west coasters.
Moonlight notes the Games
were highly competitive in rugby,
the best level of play he’s ever ex-
perienced in his age group.
“It was amazing, compared to
what I’m used to. The game was
quicker and harder hitting. There
was a lot less time to think and a
lot more action on your feet,” he
explained.
Aside from being good rugby
ambassadors for Ontario, Moon-
light says the Games gave him and
his teammates a chance to meet a
lot of people from other provinces
and territories.
He also toiled as a mainstay
with the Wanderers boys’ under-
18 team that enjoyed a strong sea-
son on the field. They’re goal of
winning a provincial title, how-
ever, was dashed after a recent
6-3 overtime loss to the Alliston
Timberwolves in the Toronto
Rugby Union (TRU) semifinal
playdowns.
“We should have won,” says
Moonlight of the loss. “We had
many chances (to score), we just
couldn’t capitalize. We had beaten
them earlier in the season.”
As for the Wanderers men’s
team, Moonlight admits the team
has struggled mightily, losing six
consecutive games at one point
in the season, while competing
in the TRU this summer. But, he’s
grateful for the chance to play with
and against better and more expe-
rienced players, which definitely
helped him achieve a spot on the
provincial under-18 squad.
“It got me used to the size of the
players, who are also quicker than
the under-18 team,” he explains.
In addition to playing club
rugby, Moonlight was also a
standout player for the Dunbar-
ton Spartans rugby teams over his
four years at the Pickering school.
Playing under longtime coaches
Hugh Mowbray and Bill Dalliday
this past season, Moonlight was
the recipient of the most valu-
able player award for the team,
received the coaches’ award and
was also named the overall senior
male athlete of the year at the
school.
“We had a great high school
team. We should have made it
to OFSAA (Ontario Federation of
School Athletic Associations), but
it didn’t go the way we wanted it to
go.”
Next season, Moonlight prom-
ises to be back on the rugby field,
this time as a member of the Wil-
frid Laurier University Golden
Hawks of Waterloo men’s team.
He plans to study philosophy at
the school.

John Moonlight was on a rugby field much of this summer, playing with the
provincial under-18 team, as well as with the Ajax Wanderers’ junior squad
and for the men’s first team. As a provincial player, the 18-year-old flanker
helped Ontario earn a silver medal at the Canada Summer Games in Regina.
Four Ajax
baseball

for OBA titles
Town hosts major
peewee championship
during long weekend
AJAX — Four Ajax Spartans
minor baseball teams are compet-
ing for diamond glory at the Ontario
Baseball Association (OBA) cham-
pionships throughout the province
during the Labour Day long week-
end.
The Spartans also play host to an
OBA championship tournament at
the major peewee level at the Ajax
Sportsplex diamonds. Games com-
mence Friday night and continue
through Sunday.
The Ajax Spartans major pee-
wees, coached by Greg Beckett, will
attempt to have the OBA champi-
onship trophy stay in Ajax again this
season. The Ajax major peewees
gained entrance to the tournament
by virtue of a host city bye.
The OBA major peewee ‘AAA’
championship begins Friday with
all eight teams in action at the Sport-
splex. The Pickering Red Sox play
the Windsor Expos on diamond 1 at
6:15 p.m. while, at diamond 2, the
Mississauga North Tigers play the
Newmarket Hawks, also at 6:15 p.m.
The late games, which start at 8:30
p.m. under the lights, pits the host
Ajax Spartans against the London
Badgers on diamond 1. Meanwhile,
on diamond 2, the Waterloo Tigers
play Toronto Playgrounds.
Games will be played on Saturday
at noon and 5 p.m. with the final
game slated for Sunday at either 1
p.m. or 4 p.m., as the tournament
uses a double-knockout format.
Meanwhile, the Spartans minor
bantam tier 1 team, coached by
Frank Arruda, is the defending OBA
champions for the age group and
will travel to Brantford looking to
defend its provincial title.
The Spartans major bantam tier
1 team, coached by Bill Boston,
earned back-to-back provincial
championships with wins in 2003
and 2004. The squad will repre-
sent the Eastern Ontario Baseball
Association (EOBA) at the OBA
playdowns in Etobicoke, searching
for its third consecutive provincial
championship.
The Ajax Spartans major bantam
tier II team, coached by Mat La-
Foret, will travel to Sault Ste. Marie
for a shot at earning a first Ontario
title.
AJAX — An overwhelming com-
munity showing of support enabled
a minor soccer team to raise more
than $5,800 to help a teammate
stricken with cancer.
The day of soccer, dubbed the
‘Friends of Vanessa 4 v 4’ fundrais-
er was hosted by the Ajax United
Magic 93 girls’ rep soccer team at
the Pickering High School fields
Sunday. The event raised $5,856.75
and will be turned over to the fam-
ily of Vanessa Morra, recently diag-
nosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a
form of cancer that has affected her
lungs.
The money was raised with the
help of local sponsors, The Main
Event Fun Games, Baking At Its Best,
Pizza Pizza, The Soccer Connection
and Ajax Predators and through
monies raised at registration, food
sales, a jumping castle, sno cone
sales and individual donations.
All told, 136 players on 17 teams
participated in the 4-on-4 tourna-
ment. Teams were from the Ajax
United Magic, Ajax Thunder, Ajax
Predators, Scarborough United,
Richmond Hill Raiders, North To-
ronto Nitros, Pickering Power,
Whitby Golden Eagles and Oshawa
Kicks.

Dolphins roll
over Ti-Cats
DURHAM — The Ajax-Pickering Dol-
phins’ atoms rolled to a decisive 48-6 vic-
tory over the Clarington Ti-Cats in their
season opener at St. Stephen’s Catholic
school on Sunday.
Quarterbacks Jeff McIlravey and Mike
Stobbart shredded the Ti-Cats defence,
thanks to a strong ground game supplied
by running backs Cole Tudor, Shaq Law-
rence, Denver Wright, Keldyn Ahlstedt,
Ku rlan Cadet and Domonick Lloyd.
Not to be outdone, offensive linemen
Nathan Cheung, Bryan Derksen, Rae
Grant, Michael Belcastro, Garrett Mole
and Marco Mertsis were the offensive
stars as they created holes and held back
the Clarington defence.
Tudor, Cadet and Lawrence each ran
for two touchdowns; Wright recorded
one major. All told, the Dolphins offence
racked up 325 yards on 30 carries, with
Tudor and Lawrence contributing more
than 100 yards apiece.
Special teams did a solid job with kick-
er Roynelle Meredith scoring on three
points-after-touchdowns, for six points.
The Dolphins’ defence allowed only 69
yards against and only three first downs.
Defensive lineman Kevin Iyamu led
the day on tackles with four. Lineback-
ers Jaiden McBride, Kiefer Smith-Gho
and Keldyn Ahlstedt had three tackles
apiece. The entire Dolphins defensive
line earned stars-of-the-game honours.
No scores were reported from the Dol-
phins’ tyke and peewee games against
the Ti-Cats.
All three Dolphins’ teams return to ac-
tion on Monday, Sept. 5 when they host
the Markham Raiders at Kinsmen Park
in Pickering.
