Man had arranged to meet 12-year-old girl for sex, police say By Jeff Mitchell Staff Writer DURHAM — Police have put out a call to young computer chat room users as they continue to in- vestigate a Durham pastor accused of using the Internet to lure a child for sex. Police in Toronto and Durham want to hear from anyone who may have encountered a man using the chat room handle “garyneartoron- to” as they look into the background of 36-year-old Kenneth Wayne Symes, of Whitby. Mr. Symes is the lead pastor at the Ajax Alliance Church, on Ritchie Avenue. Calls to the church and two church elders were not returned. Mr. Symes, pastor at the church since last year, was arrested Tues- day in Toronto. Police say he had arranged to meet a 12-year-old girl he’d been chatting with on the In- ternet. In reality, the man walked into a sting that had been months in the making, said Toronto Police De- tective-Constable Paul Krawczyk. He said police became aware of “g aryneartoronto” in April after an online investigator, Detective Scott Purches, was approached by the user in a Yahoo chat room, “Teen Oh Canada Chat.” Over the course of numerous on- line encounters, the chat became increasingly more sexually explicit, Det.-Const. Krawczyk said in an interview. “It wasn’t just a conversation or two; it was several conversations over several months,” he said. Eventually, “garyneartoronto” indicated he wanted to meet in person for a sexual encounter, po- lice said. Mr. Symes was arrested in To- ronto and charged with Internet luring of a child under 14, and invi- P astor charged with Internet luring ✦ See Police, Page 2 Give your home a new look for Summer We are Durham’s fl ooring experts! That’s one of the aims of a re- sidual waste study Durham and York regions are doing, and pub- lic input is needed, says Mirka Januszkiewicz, Durham’s direc- tor of waste management ser- vices. “We’re looking at the man- agement of residual waste,” she states. “It’s what’s left over after we take out organics and recycla- bles. There’s always something left over.” Currently, Durham hauls its trash to Michigan. An Individual Environmental Assessment (EA) will be con- ducted to select both the method used and the location for a facil- ity, she notes. The terms of reference for the EA are being drawn up and should be submitted to the pro- vincial environment minister this fall, with a review and ap- proval coming early next year. Once the terms are approved, the full EA begins. Late in 2006, the preferred waste disposal system will be se- lected, with a site chosen about a year later. The EA is to be com- pleted by early 2009, and then submitted to the environment minister for review and approval. By 2009, “we’ll have all the ap- provals ready to build a facility.” Once approved, the facility will Durham to study Pickering’s garbage options ✦ See Durham, Page 2 tation to sexual touching. The sting carried out by To ronto cops has been used in numerous cases by police to nab pedophiles who try to lure children for sex. Police infiltrate websites and chat rooms popular with pedophiles and pose as chil- dren, or people interested in trading child pornography. In some instances, meetings are set up and police lie in wait for the offender. Recently Durham Re- gional Police arrested a Mississauga man who they say lured and sexually as- saulted a teenaged girl in Oshawa. His case is before the courts. “Whether it’s a deterrent, I don’t know,” said Det.- Const. Krawczyk said of the stings. “But we’re getting them off the streets, and away from computers.” Police now want to hear from anyone else who may have communicated with or been approached by the man arrested this week. They seized computers at Mr. Symes’s Whitby home and at the church and are examining them for evi- dence as well. Mr. Symes served as a pastor at Alliance churches in Chatham and Regina be- fore coming to Durham. “We’re obviously inter- ested in anybody who be- lieves their kid may have come in contact with him, or who has been in contact with him themselves,” Det.- Const Krawczyk said. “We’ve seized the computers and we hope that will give us an idea.” Police believe the suspect may have been in contact with other children but don’t know if he’d met any, he said. Meanwhile, police con- tinue to warn parents to be vigilant and keep track of just who their children are chatting with on-line. “Just because they’re in a Yahoo or MSN chat room doesn’t mean it’s monitored and it’s safe,” Det.-Const. Krawczyk said. Anyone with information regarding Kenneth Symes is asked to call Toronto police at 416-808-7426, Durham police at 905-579-1520, ext. 5363, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Other ‘energy-pro- ducing systems’ include “plasma technology” and a biological-based meth- od that produces ethanol, she adds. “There are many differ- ent types of technology,” Ms. Januszkiewicz states. “The objective of the EA process is to come up with the criteria. We have to choose a technology and we have to choose a place,” she adds. Whatever method is se- lected would handle ma- terials not part of the ‘at source waste diversion’, which includes reduc- tion, reuse, recycling and composting. The Region now operates a ‘green bin’ program in Claring- ton, Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock townships, as well as some areas of Picker- ing. All kitchen waste is collected and composted. “It will be expanded very soon to the entire region,” she says. “Right now there’s com- posting of organic waste and we have recycling. Until we have an option, waste is sent to Michigan,” she states. To help ensure the EA is as encompassing as possi- ble, members of the pub- lic are needed, she says. “It’s extremely important. We will try harder (to have the public) more involved in the process. “It’s asking important questions -- what’s most important, what’s the cri- teria, what technology is applicable and where it will be built.” Public meetings are going to be held in the fall, she notes, when the draft terms of reference are ready. “It will outline all the activities since last September. We encourage the community to narrow down the technology.” Anyone interested can call Ms. Januszkiewicz at 905-668-7721, ext. 5494, or e-mail mirka. januszkiewicz@region. durham.on.ca. The delegates work in mu- nicipal waste and sanitation management and environ- mental law enforcement in the Chinese capital, which is hosting the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. “To prepare for the 2008 Olympic Games is just one of our purposes,” delegate Lin Lin said of the reason for the visit. “Beijing and the Chinese government want to foster sustainable devel- opment and improve the residential environment for Chinese people.” Mr. Lin, the city’s deputy division chief, municipal en- vironment division, said the Markham-based, Sino-Tech- nology Exchange Centre or- ganized the visit and chose Durham’s waste manage- ment program because it is “very successful.” Regional Chairman Roger Anderson welcomed the del- egates, noting “they have the world coming to visit them” for the Olympic Games and expressing pride that they came to Durham. “They could have gone anywhere in Ontario; they chose Durham,” he said. The delegates received an overview of Durham’s system of government and its re- sponsibilities, with a particu- lar emphasis on waste and diversion programs such as the blue box program. Former Veridian head takes reins for campaign By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM — John Wiers- ma recently got a first-hand look at what the United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge does in the community, meeting a Meals on Wheels client in Ajax. “I think this is where the rubber hits the road,” the chairman of the organiza- tion’s 2005 fundraising cam- paign said. “This is how we know how the funds are put to work.” Mr. Wiersma is the former president and chief execu- tive officer of Veridian Cor- poration. When he retired, past campaign chairman Pat O’Brien asked him to chair the next campaign and he accepted. Even though resi- dents might not have the time to be directly involved in work supported by the United Way, such as deliv- ering meals, Mr. Wiersma said they can do their part by making a donation. He plans to be actively involved in the campaign. “I’ve reviewed the ability to raise funds and the agen- cies that require funds with my campaign cabinet and the board of directors of the United Way,” he says, adding a fundraising target has been set. “We want to get more people involved, more busi- nesses involved in giving to the United Way because we know how much it does in the community.” Gwen Noble, the United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Ux- bridge’s resource develop- ment manager, says the fundraising goal is generally made public in September. Last year the organization raised $1,636,618. She says the United Way is happy to have Mr. Wiersma on the team this year. “We’re pleased that he ac- cepted because he is very community-minded, and with his knowledge of the community and leadership,” Ms. Noble said. “He’s very hands on; today (in Ajax) is a perfect example.” Rolf Ott will once again hold the co-chairman’s posi- tion for the Uxbridge area in his second year on the cam- paign. The United Way of Ajax- Pickering-Uxbridge raises funds for more than 50 pro- grams and services, support- ing 29 agencies including Big Brothers and Sisters of Ajax- Pickering, the Canadian Red Cross, Distress Centre Dur- ham and Uxbridge Commu- nity Care. P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, AUGUST 12, 2005 durhamregion.com EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR Ta ke a stand a gainst littering S pring, summer, fall or winter, the season doesn’t mat- ter, year after year we hear from readers how disgusted they are by the trash littering our streets, sidewalks and parks. In Pickering, council is urging the Province to take action on dirty highway exits which are leaving a bad impression on people coming to the city. There are bylaws in place to curb this problem and people throwing trash out their car windows or dropping it anywhere in the area face fines if convicted. But the reality is, these by- laws are hard to enforce and police already have a lot to look out for, aside from littering. Still, the issue can’t be ignored. Indeed, we have good rea- son to continue to strive for a litter-free municipality. Tourism, attracting industry and the basic quality of living for residents are a few of the reasons we have to continue to search for ways to eliminate the problem. In the spring the problem is revealed in the piles of litter gathered where snowbanks hid it temporarily. Spring clean- ups make a big dent in the problem and show our pride in our community. Guides, Scouts, residents’ associations, sports teams and more all come together to clean up the mess. And that’s where it ends generally. But it doesn’t have to. Municipalities help these spring cleanups with materials and garbage pickup afterwards. Maybe it’s time to extend that to other times of the year. Why not have the public works department back up any community cleanup day throughout the year if organizers contacted them in advance? Just as they already do in the spring. Beyond that, it’s time for every person to take the challenge to watch out for litter. There’s no reason we couldn’t create a culture of clean in the community by taking the time to stop and pick up a wrapper or empty coffee cup when we see it. Even more important is the making it clear to people we see littering that their actions are inappropriate. Maybe we can shame people into stopping their littering ways. If done in a polite but firm fashion, it could have a long-term affect. If people realize others are watching and caring about whether you litter, they’ll think twice before doing it again. Make the effort with your trash To the editor: Re: ‘Pickering trash talks Province’, July 31. After reading about trash at Brock and Whites roads, it occurs to me that it is less the responsibility of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation than it is the responsibility of the slobs who put it there. Why is it that people throw garbage out the car window, or drop garbage as they walk along the sidewalks and then expect someone else to pick it up. I have personally observed citizens and neighbours throw garbage on sidewalks and boulevards when they have to walk right by a trash can to get where they are going. When driving your car, a small bag can be used to corral your trash until you get home or to a local trash container. It costs us money now to have our trash picked up once a week, but on top of that some people feel someone else should fol- low them around to pick up the stuff they throw everywhere. Maybe if you are one of ‘these people’ you should ask your mother to follow you around to clean up your garbage instead of the Ministry of Transportation. Life after 70 is anything but slow I t’s ageist to admit, but the level of activity among Pickering seniors is quite surprising. Two people in particular have re- cently shattered the stereotype I’d held that there’s no life after 70 -- they prove you can keep very busy even after 80. Pickering senior of the year Doris Madder just turned 83 and isn’t show- ing any signs of slowing down yet. She is president of the St. Martin’s Seniors Club -- a position she’s held for the past five years -- and before that was the sec- retary for 15 years. She is also a member of the South Pickering Seniors Club, helped bring the Flag bus to Pickering and regularly attends church. As if that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Ms. Madder also enjoys going to the mall -- more so for the socializing than the shopping. She explained she doesn’t like to be “idle.” (There doesn’t seem to be much chance of that happening). Another active octogenarian is Gabri- ele Colicchia. The Greenwood retiree spends three months each year in sunny Acapulco, Mexico. A few years ago his trips became a little less vacation and a little more humanitarian. He was contacted by the administra- tor of a local orphanage and after going there and seeing what little the children have, he decided to help. Now, in ad- dition to visiting the orphanage each Sunday when he’s in Mexico (and hiring people to do work on the old building), he is getting the message out at home about the situation in the hope of gath- ering donations to do more good. Mr. Colicchia said he gets just as much out of helping as the children do. For him it is the looks on their faces when they see him that keeps him going. These are just two examples of the many active mature people in the com- munity. The South Pickering Seniors Club is full of vibrant people who enjoy full lives lawn bowling or spending time with their family and friends. Not to mention the many seniors who volun- teer in the community. Where would we be without the people of the hospital auxiliary or the local food bank (many of whom are in their golden years)? Please send it to news editor David Stell at dstell@ durhamregion. com NEWS ADVERTISER After losing the ability to drive, Ian Duncan was ‘marooned’ By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer AJAX — Shortly after his wife died, Ian Duncan had a heart attack and lost his right to drive. For the year following, Mr. Duncan spent most of his time “marooned” in his apartment until he dis- covered the Ajax Pickering Transit Authority’s special- ized service for those with disabilities. “I think it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread,” said Mr. Duncan. “It changed my whole out- look,” Mr. Duncan said. “The fact I could get out, I had freedom to get out and go somewhere.” Mr. Duncan’s heart attack, just three days after his wife’s funeral, required him to get a defibrillator implant. Be- cause the device sends a jolt through his system when his heart falls out of rhythm, his licence was removed. “All of a sudden I’m stuck in the apartment here by my- self,” said Mr. Duncan. He began using Com- munity Care to get to doc- tor appointments and they made him aware of the Ajax Pickering Transit Authority’s specialized service. He started using the bus service for Wednesday trips to the Pickering Town Centre where he has breakfast, win- dow shops, and looks at pet store puppies, cats, and fish. At age 78, he uses an elec- tronic wheelchair because of ongoing problems with walk- ing. “(The specialized bus ser- vice) is a godsend to people that are handicapped like myself... because it’s curbside service,” said Mr. Duncan. The drivers are also friend- ly and helpful, said Mr. Dun- can, adding they often go out of their way to open the doors leading into his apartment building. “It just makes it a lot easier when someone holds the door for you,” he said. Mr. Duncan added they al- ways smile and ask how he is doing. “It sort of brightens your day up if you’re sitting there in a miserable mood,” said Mr. Duncan. Beverley Thomson, man- ager of customer service and marketing for the transit au- thority, said she’s pleased the drivers go above and be- yond the call of duty. “They know most of their clients by name,” said Ms. Thomson. “It’s almost like a family.” She said the drivers really love their job and notes they also make suggestions for cli- ent service improvements. “We all work together for the customers,” said Ms. Thomson, and added the dispatchers also work with customer service to ensure the best for clients. Last month, university students from across the country provided a glimpse of that gasoline-free future, as they raced solar vehicles 3,900 kilometres from Texas to Alberta for the 2005 North American Solar Challenge. While Durham did not have a team at this year’s event, if all goes well UOIT students will be at the start- ing line for the 2007 com- petition, behind the wheel of a solar car that has been years in the making. “The project started al- most before the school opened,” says UOIT Solar Vehicle Team president Samveg Saxena, a third- year engineering student. “For so long we were plan- ning and doing the admin- istrative stuff, it’s exciting to finally see it come off the computer screen and start to take shape.” Solar vehicles work by collecting sunlight, in the form of photons, on pan- els made of semiconductor material. The panels con- vert the photons into elec- tricity which is then stored in batteries. A control sys- tem regulates how much energy is distributed to the electric motor. Earlier this summer, the 15-member UOIT team began purchasing materi- als for a wood and foam prototype of their car to be completed this fall. Mr. Sax- ena says construction of the final carbon fiber version will be underway by late September and wrapped up by April. That leaves the team about a year to get Ministry of Transportation approval and an insurance policy before competing in 2007. When finished, the UOIT model will be about the size of a minivan with more than 300 solar cells cover- ing the roof. They won’t know how fast it will travel until the construction process is fur- ther along, but Mr. Saxena says a cruising speed of 60 to 80 kilometres per hour is not unlikely. “Some schools have mil- lion-dollar budgets and are able to build vehicles that can get up to highway speeds, with really expen- sive parts,” he explains. “We won’t be using multi-million dollar parts, but we will definitely make a vehicle that is road wor- thy.” The price tag for the UOIT solar vehicle is set at about $200,000. So far, the team has raised just over $25,000 as well as receiv- ing in-kind donations. They hope to bring in the rest through corporate spon- sors and fundraising events slated to begin this fall. In addition to raising the profile of UOIT and provid- ing students with valuable experience, Mr. Saxena says the solar vehicle project educates the public about the potential for renewable energy and sustainable de- velopment. “It demonstrates that this really is a viable option, it is possible to drive thousands of kilometres with zero emissions.” For more information visit www.uoitsolarcar.ca. A/P PAGE 12 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, AUGUST 12, 2005 durhamregion.com Funding could create day program By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer DURHAM — About three-dozen people will be helped by new fund- ing for the Head Injury Association of Durham Region (HIAD). The association recently was granted funding totalling $508,848 by the provincial Health Ministry to provide assistance for people living with an acquired brain in- jury (ABI). Frank Murphy, executive direc- tor of the Durham group, says the new funding will help 35 to 40 people at any given time. “We’ve had an outreach pro- gram across Durham Region for a number of years,” he said. “We want to extend it to high-needs people. A number of dollars will go to them to support them to live in the community.” The money received by the Dur- ham group is part of $5.6 million from the provincial government to help hundreds of people who have suffered a brain injury. The HIAD is also hoping to set up a “day program, more of a club- house than a day program that people think of,” Mr. Murphy says, adding there could be more than one location for the day program. The program would help clients “develop skills, increase their so- cial, psycho-social skills that may be lost through a brain injury,” he states. “We’re already providing daily support and assistance connected to the services.” With the new funding, “we hope to expand to a broader base,” with the day program-clubhouse, Mr. Murphy says. “It will expand peo- ple’s ability to function in society.” The agency had applied for the funding “through a variety of stud- ies with the ministry,” he notes. It’s a priority in Durham, Mr. Murphy adds, pointing out, “Ser- vices for people with brain injury are less well developed here.” The new funding is in addition to the approximately $300,000 the agency receives annually from the ministry. “Some high-needs (clients) re- quire a high level of funding,” he says. The HIAD helps people across the Region. “We have a mailing list of ap- proximately 500,” adding that last year, about 175 people received aid. “With this funding, we’re look- ing to increase that as well. “Brain injury has a higher prev- alence than most think,” Mr. Mur- phy notes, adding it leaves people with difficulties working and car- rying on. “We assist people with all levels of injury.” The Durham group was founded in 1982 by a group of parents and incorporated in 1987. ABI includes any injury to the brain not related to damage that occurred during birth, a congenital disorder or caused by a degenera- tive disorder, such as Alzheimer’s disease or multiple sclerosis. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, AUGUST 12, 2005 PAGE 13 A/P Dental Care for Adults, Kids and Great Big Babies. • A Full Range of Dental Treatments - Bring the whole family. • Saturday & Evening Appointments - To serve you better. • Flexible Payment Options - Helping you get the treatment you want. • A Relaxing Atmosphere - Virtual vision glasses, stereo headphones to help ensure you have a pleasant visit. Coff ee grounds can be used in several ways. Grounds can be applied along with other materials as a side dressing for veg- etables, roses, and other plants. Th ey also make an excellent addition to the compost. Grounds can also help with worm bins. Wo rms fed with coff ee grounds will fl our- ish. Gardeners can use grounds from their home coff ee brewing machines, or they can stop by Starbucks to pick up a bag of com- plimentary coff ee grounds. Starbucks off ers spent grounds to customers year-round for use in gardens and compost bins. “Coff ee grounds can be a valuable source of nutrition for the garden,” says Ben Pack- ard, director of Environmental Aff airs for Starbucks. “Reusing coff ee grounds in the garden year-round is a great way to avoid disposing of this rich resource from our stores.” According to Th e Composting Council of Canada, composting not only helps to re- duce the amount of waste going to landfi lls, it produces a valuable soil amendment that can improve the texture and fertility of the soil. Compost is the single most important ingredient for soil quality and productivity. Some gardeners even use the grounds to help ward off slugs and snails. Th e grounds can be used to mulch plants that slugs love to feast on, such as hostas, ligularias and lil- ies. Coff ee grounds can be applied directly to a garden’s acid loving plants such as azaleas, roses or hydrangeas. While coff ee grounds may be acidic, adding leaves and dried grass can reduce this acidity. Your local garden- ing expert can help you decide what is best for your garden. Although getting rid of dan- delions without chemicals is a more environmentally friendly approach to a beautiful lawn and garden, it can be challenging. “It’s not always necessary to get down on your hands and knees to pull up weeds,” says Rob Dewar, spokes- person for Fiskars Garden Tools. “If you choose the proper tools and follow a few simple techniques, you can easily control weeds without chemical alter- natives.” As a fi rst step, identify the weeds in your garden and learn about their life- cycles. Annuals spread by seed, so you need to pull them before their seeds set. To eliminate perennials, you’ll need to dig out the entire root. Use the proper tools that can make the job less painful. “Th e new Fiskars Weeder lets you weed standing up,” comments Dewar. “To use the Weeder the gardener simply places the tool di- rectly over the weed, pushes the claws into the ground with their foot and then draws the shaft back, pulling the weed out in one smooth, eff ortless ac- tion.” Make sure you cover bare soil. Adding two to four inches of organic mulch as a cover on bare soil can help prevent weeds from growing. Keep seeds buried. Soil can con- tain as many as 80,000 weed seeds per square yard. When you dig down and turn the soil, those seeds are exposed to sunlight and rain, causing them to sprout and grow. Cover your garden with an inch of weed-free and seed- free compost after turning the soil. Don’t water your weeds. Even weeds can’t grow without water, so use a water method that applies water di- rectly to the plants you want to grow. If you have a story to tell, e-mail dstell@durhamregion.com. By Jerome Watt Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING — Brothers Chris, Shaun and Nicolas Woolcox, along with friend and honorary brother Steve Maste, wanted to create a business that combined their interest in custom-designed cars, music and health. Mixed together, these pas- sions created a smoothie-selling, creamsicle orange and vanilla white truck. It’s a tricked-out truck with custom graphics, air-ride sus- pension, 20-inch chrome rims and a big screen plasma TV on the rear featuring music videos, sporting events and whatever else interests the 18- to 34-year- old demographic. “What we wanted to do is cre- ate a business that was cool,” Shaun Woolcox said. And the cool Pickering busi- ness has a cool name too: 2 Smooth Smoothies. The group of men, all in their 20s, came up with the idea two- and-a-half years ago to create a mobile truck that serves smooth- ies (a thick cold drink made from fruit, fruit juice, low-fat yogurt and purified water). The first truck hit the streets last August. A second truck has joined the first and in a matter of days a third joins the fleet. The group plans on adding a fourth soon after the third. They do a large part of the fab- rication of the trucks themselves. 2 Smooth Smoothies bring the trucks to a variety of shows and functions, including corporate events and can count Dell, IBM and the TD bank among clients that have invited the truck to their events. The trucks make the smooth- ies onboard and also serve pro- tein shakes, bottled water, energy drinks, healthy snack foods and frozen fruit bars. The men hope to capture people’s attention by offering smoothies with such names as Bad-Ass Banana and Raspberry Rebel. Coming up with right ingredi- ents for the smoothie was a trial and error process. Chris Woolcox hosted six or more smoothie par- ties at his home to allow family and friends to sample potential mixes until they arrived at the right formula. “We were sampling for a long time before we came up with the right one,” he said. Even when the temperature turns cool, the trucks can op- erate indoors at special events, Shaun Woolcox said, because the vans use a hybrid power system as opposed to a gas or diesel sys- tem for the kitchen. Business has been good ac- cording to the young entrepre- neurs. “Our facility is not big enough,” Shaun Woolcox said of the unit they now occupy. “In less than a year, we’ve outgrown it.” 2 Smooth Smoothies already has two franchisees onboard and hopes to add more. If American statistics are any indication, 2 Smooth Smoothies has entered a market with po- tential. According to the Interna- tional Dairy Foods Association, Americans spent $21 billion on ice cream and frozen treats in 2001, with $13 billion spent away from home. For more information, go to 2smoothsmoothies.com. A member of Green Division, he and his bandmates have put together a lineup of local bands to play The Spot tomorrow night (Aug. 13). It’s a charity concert with all funds raised donated to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. “I like the foundation and I wanted to do something,” Sweet- ing says. “It’s an important cause.” Green Division, he explains, plays ska, punk and reggae style music, all their own material. They will be joined for the show by Place Called Home, As Ever, Empty Chamber and Fame and Fortune. The charity concert wasn’t an overnight idea. “I’ve wanted to do something like this for a while,” explains Sweeting. However, it wasn’t easy to find a venue and he says The Spot was able to help them out by giving them a break on the show. The club hosts young bands regu- larly, Sweeting says, and Green Division has played there before, so he knew it would be a great place for the benefit concert. He adds the show goes from 7 to 11 p.m. and people who get out will have a good time. According to Sweeting, he has researched the Stephen Lewis Foundation and it funds African community groups that provide care to women who are dying, assists orphans and supports the associations of people living with HIV/AIDS, which have sprung up across the continent. He pointed out there are cur- rently more than 25 million peo- ple with HIV/AIDS in Africa, more than half of which are women. Due to that, there are nearly 10 million AIDS orphans there, for whom community support orga- nizations have become a neces- sity. So, Sweeting says it’s impor- tant for people to know about the problem and the show has the goal to “promote awareness of this incredibly important global issue, as well as help raise money for an organization which has played a very strong role”, he says. The Spot is at 74 Commercial Av e., Ajax, just west of Harwood Aven ue. Tickets are $8, available at the door, and additional donations for the foundation can be made as well. Green Division are, from left, Aaron Gold, Pat Kavanagh, Harlan Guthrie, Jeff Clarkson, Jonny Lane, and Jeff Sweeting. Members not pictured are Brent Harasym, and Alex Guthrie. DURHAM — Ron Moore, an Elvis tribute artist, is back playing in Durham this summer. He’ll perform Songs in the Key of Elvis on Aug. 18, 25 and Sept. 1 at the Memorial Park bandshell, Simcoe and John streets, in down- town Oshawa. The free concert is at 7 p.m. Moore has won acclaim as an Elvis tribute artist in recent years, has released a CD and is putting together a band. He’s performed at venues throughout Canada and has been invited to the United States, to tour this winter. He’ll soon be working with Elvis’s origi- nal backup group, the Jordanaires. ‘Elvis’ concerts coming up AJAX — A picturesque perspec- tive of Canada is available at the Ajax Public Library. Members of the Oshawa Camera Club have selected 30 photographs for an annual exhibition, this year called ‘Canadian Perspectives’. It features pictures from all 10 prov- inces, the Yukon and Northwest Te rritories. The show is at the library until Aug. 27 and then moves to the Northview branch of the Oshawa Public Library. Established in 1938 as the Gen- eral Motors Camera Club, the Oshawa group has a long history of success in local, national and international competitions. About 35 members gather twice a month for workshops, evaluations and guest speakers. New members are welcome and can contact Fred Sewell at 905- 728-5716. The show is in the Rotary Room of the main library branch, at the corner of Harwood Avenue and Achilles Road. There’s no charge to see the exhibit and it can be seen during regular library hours, except when the room is in use. The main branch is open Mon- day to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 905- 683-4000. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, AUGUST 12, 2005 PAGE 19 A/P visit our website at: www.petersacademy.com MAXIMUM INSURANCE SAVINGS CALL NOW - HOURS: 7 DAYS A WEEK 10am - 10pm PICKERING 1050 Brock Rd. But for one Ajax girl, it’s a labour of love. “I love animals, and I love hors- es,” said 11-year-old Jillian Gooch. “I like to be with them, feed them, and brush them. I like working with them.” She has been riding for three years, and as her mother Lynne Gooch recalls, has had passion for them all her life. “She’s loved horses as long as I can remember,” said Mrs. Gooch. “Ever since she was little she’s col- lected stuffed horses, like another girl would collect Barbies.” Jillian got her chance to ride be- cause her aunt breeds horses. “My sister trained in horseman- ship at Humber College,” Mrs. Gooch said. “She’s done competitions be- fore. She’s trained her daughter and mine. She trains her, coaches her. She gives her the ability to improve herself and become top notch.” After riding for a couple of years, Jillian was offered the chance to show in equestrian competitions, an opportunity she seized. “I want to show for a long time,” said Jillian. “The first show I went to I got first, which I didn’t expect. I got a big trophy, and I couldn’t stop smiling.” That show was the 2004 All Welsh Championship, where she won ju- nior showmanship. “I’m really good at showman- ship,” she said. In fact, she has won the showmanship category at every competition she’s entered, includ- ing the 2004 Royal Winter Fair at the CNE. Jillian’s partner in success has been a horse named Bardwyn Bright Hope. “It’s the perfect size for her,” said Mrs. Gooch. This year, Hope has been preparing to give birth to ponies, so Jillian has worked with another of her aunt’s horses, Air Hawk’s Falcon. Still, she hopes to return to Hope eventually. “A fter Hope has had her babies, I’ll be riding her again,” she said. “I hope she’s still healthy by the time I’m older.” Mrs. Gooch is happy with the ef- fect horse riding has had on her daughter. “It’s just fantastic. It’s given her the confidence in doing things. She wants the experience, to be able to work with the horses, and to have fun. “And she’s made another group of friends.” As for the future, Mrs. Gooch is hopeful her daughter continues to compete. “I hope she does, it’d be good for her,” she said. “It’s really tough in the older age groups, but we’ll support her as best we can.” And Jillian already has her heart set on a horse of her own. “She wants to get a job, so she can buy a horse from my sister,” said Mrs. Gooch. That may take a while, but in the meantime she’ll be riding. “As long as my sister keeps her horses, she’ll do it,” said Mrs. Gooch. Ajax girl rides off with top results Former world champion not quick enough to make event finals DURHAM — Durham’s two elite hurdlers met with a prema- ture end at the world track and field championships in Finland We dnesday. Pickering’s Perdita Felicien and Whitby’s Priscilla Lopes both bowed out in semifinal heats, a major disappointment for Fe- licien, who is still trying to re- bound from last year’s Olympic disaster. The 24- year-old F elicien entered the meet as the defend- ing world champion from 2003, but still haunted by her fall in the final of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. She finished fourth in a time of 12.94 seconds in one of three semifinal heats, not good enough to reach the Thursday final. For the second straight day, athletes had to deal with a slick track, which partly explains Fel- icien being so far off her personal best time of 12.46. “I kind of fell apart right near the end,” Felicien told press in Finland. “I think I was being way too cautious with the weather when it started raining.” Felicien may also have been ad- versely affected by the fact a run- ner in the next lane fell during the race. “I don’t want to use that. I felt her go down and I just thought ‘don’t touch me,”’ Felicien said. “I lost focus for a millisecond. That’s all it took for me to zone in on that. “I am so upset that I let that kind of get to me. I have been there before. I lost my rhythm.” Lopes, 22, also a 2004 Olympi- an, was fifth in her heat in a time of 12.91 seconds. The top two from each heat, plus the next two fastest times overall, qualified for the final. Jillian Gooch’s love of animals has translated into success on the equestrian circuit. The Ajax girl has earned a number of awards for her riding. Perry Pistritto, 15 of Pickering, set a personal best time in the 1,500 metres event with a time of 4:34.13. The club had a number of other successes, led by Andrew Cackette, 13, who brought home three gold medals and set a new record in the 200m hurdles with a time of 28 seconds. He also won the 200m finals in 25.2 seconds and the 400m in 55.03 seconds. Ryan Charlton, 15, won the 400m in a time of 53.06 seconds. Devon Briggs, 15, set a per- sonal best time in the 1,500m with a clocking of 4:32.91 and in the 3,000m in 9:57.85. Luke Irwin, 16, posted a per- sonal best in the 3,000m with a time of 9:44.67. The Ontario Track and Field Championships were held Aug. 6 and 7 at York University in To- ronto. Another club member, Lil- iane Sparks, 19, finished fourth in the 5,000m at the recent Pan American Junior Championships in Windsor, with a clocking of 17:12. Nominate your coach Ajax and Pickering players had key role in win at elimination tournament By Brad Kelly Staff Editor DURHAM — Jim Lutton has wit- nessed a lot of junior baseball in his day, but none better than the per- formance of his Oshawa Legion- aires club over the weekend. Hosting the Ontario Baseball As- sociation Junior Elimination tour- nament, the Legionaires waltzed through the weekend unscathed, winning all six games en route to the championship, earning the right to represent Ontario at the Junior National Championships in Saskatoon later this month. The club is laden with Ajax and Picker- ing players, along with three coach- es. “We were hot,” said Lutton, who manages the club that produced a 7-2 decision over Tecumseh in the championship final on Civic Holi- day Monday. “Our infield made plays that any major leaguer would be proud to say they did it. “The double plays we turned were as quick as any I have seen turned in any junior ball I have been involved with.” While the perfect record and five- run bulge in the final would suggest the Legionaires had an easy time of it, that wasn’t necessarily the case. While they did open with a con- vincing 7-0 victory over Stoney Creek Friday, the remaining four games leading into the final were very tight ball games, with a couple left undecided until the final in- ning. Pitching, defence and timely hit- ting, all elements needed to win a championship, were evident Sat- urday and Sunday, producing wins over Thornhill 3-0, East York 3-1, Te cumseh 3-0 (in a final preview) and Burlington 4-2 in the semifi- nals. In the elimination round, the Te- cumseh game went into the sev- enth and final inning in a scoreless tie before Oshawa pulled it out, duplicating that feat again in the semifinals, scoring a pair in the bottom of the seventh to eliminate Burlington. “We more than exceeded our expectations,” noted Lutton of his team’s performance. “On the week- end, we were definitely the best team. If we needed a hit, somebody came through with it.” Kevin Wallace went the distance on the mound in Monday’s cham- pionship win, and was named the Outstanding Pitcher of the tourna- ment. Other Legionaires winning personal accolades were Ajax’s Stephen Budai, a co-winner of the Outstanding Catcher award with Te cumseh’s Darren Kipping, and first baseman Josh Brock, of Osha- wa, named the Outstanding Hitter. The provincial title for the Le- gionaires equals ones previously won in 1999, 2002 and 2003. Other local Legionaires are Mike Dahiroc, Willie Neadles, coach Jim Sheppard, coach Kyle Sheppard, and coach Gord Brock, all of Ajax, and Jeff Murdoch and Chris Papalia of Pickering. NOTES: Last season, the Legion- aires were ranked in the top-four at provincials, but were knocked out in the semis. This season they were seeded sixth... The Whitby Chiefs, a late substitution for North York, won their opening game 5-4 over Burlington, but were eliminated with losses to Mississauga 6-5 and Etobicoke 11-5... Oshawa opens the Junior Nationals on Aug. 25 against British Columbia at 1 p.m., followed by a nightcap against the host team at 8:30 p.m. “If we play as well as we did on the weekend, we will be heard from in the medal games,” predicted Jim Lutton. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, AUGUST 12, 2005 PAGE 21 A/P 3430 7TH CONCESSION RD., PICKERING • Lakeridge Rd. 3 Km • North of Hwy. #7 www.watsonsglen.com Offer expires August 31, 2005. 905-655-9187 OR 1-888-854-1892 2 GOLFERS PLUS CART SPECIAL! 18 HOLES ( includes cart) $110.00 until 3:00pm (includes taxes) $90.00 after 3:00pm (includes taxes) 9 HOLES ( includes cart) $50.00 after 3:00pm only GPS SYSTEMS AVAILABLE MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY ONLY!
