Knitting group offers comfort to kids in need By Jerome Watt Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING — What began as a self- improvement project for Pickering’s Geraldine Smith has grown into an organization that makes people’s lives better. Ms. Smith created Knitting With Love, a group that knits afghans, sweaters, hats, and mittens for He- rizon House, Denise House and The Yo uth Centre in Ajax. It was part of a self-improvement project four years ago. She can’t believe how strong the organization is going today and how it has grown to something more than just a knitting club. “I think it (has become) more popu- lar than I had expected. I’m surprised this group has maintained itself,” Ms. Smith said. “We have become friends.” Meeting every two months from September to May at the Orchard Villa Retirement Residence on Valley Farm Road in Pickering, the group of roughly 20 has participants from their teens to into their 80s. The group even has a newsletter that is mailed out after every meeting. Pickering resident Danuta Booth en- joys the opportunity to knit, something she’s been doing for 30 to 35 years. “Knitting itself is very relaxing while watching TV or sitting riding in the car,” Ms. Booth said. “I like knowing that the actual things I knit are going to people who need them.” While Ms. Booth and Ms. Smith are in their 50s, 13-year-old Ajax mem- ber Lindsay Rusaw enjoys knitting as much as the older members. Lindsay joined a year and half ago after reading about the group in this paper. “I wanted to put my talents to good use,” she said. As a member of the group, Lindsay gets a chance to pick up new tech- niques from the other members. While the knitting might add some- thing to the knitter’s lives, for the peo- ple at Herizon House in Ajax, the af- ghan supplied by the group brightens up an otherwise bleak situation. Herizon House provides shelter for abused women and children. When coming to the facility, each child gets a bear, book and “blanky” out of a treasure box. The blanky is BLAZE FOUGHT THROUGH THE HAZE Mike Pochwat/ News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Pickering firefighters responded to a barn fire Saturday around 10 a.m. north of Brougham. The empty barn at 1620 Seventh Concession Rd., at Brock Road, was destroyed in the morning blaze. Damage has been set at $1,500. The cause is still being investigated. There were no injuries. Environment Ministry spokesman says it’s a record year for smog By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM — John Garvin has just about had enough. The Whitby resident moved to New Mexico in 1996, returning last year. In the southwestern U.S., he notes, your gaze can travel for almost 100 kilometres. In Durham on many days this summer, you would be lucky to see a mile or two. The culprit is smog, a noxious mix of air pollutants that can affect anyone’s health, but espe- cially groups like young children, the elderly, asthmatics and people with heart problems. Mr. Garvin says he’s “extremely seri- ous” about moving back to the States, in part to escape it. “When you come back you’re liter- ally in shock,” he says of returning to Ontario. “I notice now that I have a cough I didn’t have before.” Ontario’s Environment Ministry on Monday issued its 13th smog advisory of the year, with 44 days in 2005 that such an advisory has been in effect. To put that in perspective, near the end of August last year, the ministry issued its fourth advisory. “This has been a record-setting year,” says ministry spokesman John Steele. Durham Region as of Monday counted 12 smog advisories covering 39 days, the highest ever. Bumped to the number two spot is 2001, when Mr. Steele says there were seven advisories covering 20 days in Durham. A weath- er pattern that has locked southern Ontario into a southerly flow of hot air from the U.S. south for the last couple of months or more is to blame, he says. The humid air mass travels north up the Ohio River valley, picking up pol- lutants from more than 200 coal-fired generating stations along the way, Mr. Steele says. “We add to it with our own transpor- Police say children in the car at time of incident PICKERING — Several charges have been laid against a man for allegedly striking a victim with an axe during an argument at a Pickering home Sunday. Durham Regional Police officers struggled with a suspect after being called to a Woodview Avenue home around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, according to a report. Police said a man became en- raged with another man and went to the garage to fetch an axe. He struck the 30-year-old victim, from Mississauga, in the leg and arm with the blunt side of the axe before the man retreated to a car, police said. The man struck the hood of the car with the axe before smashing out the windshield, police said. Three young children were in the car during the at- tack. Finally, the man threw the broken axe handle at the victim, striking him in the head, before going into his house, police said. Officers arriving on scene encoun- tered a verbally abusive man who re- fused to co-operate when they attempt- ed to take him into custody, police said. Khalil Hatu, 37, is charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, possession of a dangerous weapon and mischief. The 17-year-old Notre Dame Catho- lic Secondary School student earned a 97.8 per cent average. Among his marks this year were 100 per cent in biology, 97 per cent in chemistry, 96 per cent in physics, 96 per cent in reli- gion, 95 per cent in computer science, 98 per cent in geometry and discreet mathematics and 100 per cent in cal- culus. “It’s not really about the marks, it’s about the desire to study and learn about the topic,” said Kai. “If you want to study it and are willing to do the as- signments, the marks will come more naturally.” Although marks do reflect hard work and intelligence, they’re not ev- erything and opportunities can influ- ence success as well, said Kai. “In Grade 11 my marks were not as high as they were this year,” he said. With high school behind him, Kai is on his way to the University of Toronto to study engineering science and open the door to more opportunities. Kai chose the program to challenge him- self because he heard it was difficult to get into. When he completes the four- year program, he may attend medical school. “That’s why I’m volunteering at the hospital,” said Kai. He spends 16 hours a week at the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hos- pital, working in the daytime surgery and outpatient rehab departments. There he observes, does house clean- ing and keeps patients company. Because medical school costs so much, Kai wants to be sure it’s right for him. “It’s not just academic discipline, it’s a lifestyle,” he said. If Kai decides not to pursue medi- cine, he can get a job or continue expanding his education, he said. “I’m not closing any doors, I’m ac- tually opening them,” he said. A $5,000 entrance scholarship from the University of Toronto will help Kai with his admission fees. Durham College support staff vote to strike DURHAM — More than 6,000 support staff at 24 colleges in Ontario -- includ- ing 300 workers at Durham College -- have voted in favour of a strike. Members with the Ontario Public Ser- vices Union (OPSEU) have been nego- tiating a new deal with the Ministry of Education since January. On Aug. 4, they voted 93 per cent to reject the Ministry’s latest contract offer, and setting a strike date for Sept. 7. Rod Bemister, chairman of the union’s bargaining team, said the union is not satisfied with the deal being offered by the Ministry -- a four-year term with an annual pay hike maxing out at three per cent. His team is asking for a total pay package of four per cent per year, a shorter contract term as well as a recog- nition allowance. Contracts for college support staff - - including clerical, maintenance and information technology workers -- will expire on Aug. 31. Glenn Toikka, chairman of the man- agement’s bargaining team, said further negotiations are planned at the end of August. The last time college support staff walked off the job was 1979. A con- tract was approved within weeks. Durham police need help in incident that left teen with minor wounds PICKERING — Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward as they investigate the stabbing of a Picker- ing teenager early Sunday at a house party. Durham Regional Police responding to a report of a disturbance on Dunn Crescent around 12:40 a.m. Sunday learned a youth had been attacked and stabbed during an altercation with several other young people at a house party. The Pickering boy, 17, was bashed over the head with a beer bottle and fled down the street with his attackers in pursuit, police said. He was sur- rounded by a group of males and beat- en and kicked; during the attack the youth suffered two minor stab wounds to his back, police said. He was taken to hospital for treatment. Police have spoken to some of the young people who were at the party, but are appealing for more witnesses to come forward. The suspects are de- scribed as three teenaged males. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call 19 Division at 905-579-1520, extension 2535, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Leng thy police probe leads to fraud charges against Pickering man Locals are curious how Pope Benedict will relate to youth By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer DURHAM — With excitement and curiosity, Durham pilgrims are heading to Germany for the first World Youth Day since the death of Pope John Paul II. On We dnesday Aug. 10, the journey to Cologne begins for about 45 Durham parishioners travelling to World Youth Day 2005 with the Archdiocese of To- ronto’s Office of Catholic Youth. There, they’ll join thousands from around the world to cel- ebrate their faith from Aug. 16 to 21. “I think I’m going to be trans- formed,” said Audra Gray, a 26- year-old from Pickering attend- ing World Youth Day for the first time. She decided to go after hear- ing stories from her friends who have gone in the past. Ms. Gray said the celebration will give her an opportunity to meet people from around the world with the same “zest” for God and learn more about her faith. Throughout the celebration, participants are involved in prayer, catechism, music, festivi- ties, a vigil and mass with Pope Benedict XVI. Ms. Gray speculates the expe- rience will strengthen and renew her faith. “It really does change your perception on your faith,” said Lauren Zakoor, a facilitator for the Office of Catholic Youth and member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Oshawa. At 23 years old, this is Ms. Za- koor’s third time attending World Yo uth Day; she went to Rome in 2000 and Toronto in 2002. She said her past participation in Wo rld Youth Day heightened her faith and made her look for op- portunities in her life to become more involved. Ms. Zakoor is a supply teacher for the Durham Catholic District School Board and when she returns, will work to become a full-time teacher. St. Joseph the Worker Parish started planning and fundraising for the trip two years ago, said Ms. Zakoor. Of the $3,200 cost per person, the parish’s group was able to raise about $700 to $800 each through garage sales, auctions, dances, and other ac- tivities. In Germany, the group stays in a youth hostel with about 200 people from the Toronto area. Before World Youth Day festivi- ties begin, the group spends four days in Rome and takes a reli- gious tour. When World Youth Day cel- ebrations start, it will be bitter sweet, said Ms. Zakoor. “I think that’s how everyone feels,” said Ms. Zakoor. Ms. Zakoor said it will be sad because this is the first World Yo uth Day to occur since the April death of Pope John Paul II - - its initiator, and also the first led by Pope Benedict. Ms. Zakoor added it will be exciting to see how Pope Benedict responds to the youth and they to him. Ms. Gray is also interested in hearing what Pope Benedict has to say. “I’m excited,” said Ms. Gray. “I would have liked to be there for John Paul... but I’m also look- ing forward to hearing what this Pope has to say.” A/P PAGE 3 ◆NEWS ADVERTISER ◆AUGUST 10, 2005 REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT CHARGES On September 7, 2005 the Council of the Region of Durham will hold a public meeting, pursuant to Section 12 of the Development Charges Act, 1997. Mr. Steele points out that there are still a lot of potential smog days left this year. In 2003, the seventh advisory was issued in October. The ministry issues a Smog Watch when there is a 50 per cent or high- er likelihood of elevated smog levels within the next three days. A smog ad- visory means higher smog levels either right away or the next day. Elevated smog levels are defined as air quality index readings of 50 or higher. The air quality index (AQI) network is com- prised of 38 monitoring stations across Ontario, including one in Oshawa. The stations measure the six most common pollutants in the air to come up with a reading. Since June 1, the Oshawa station has recorded 34 moderate or poor air quality days, the worst being an AQI reading of 72 on June 25. Glendene Collins, Durham health department spokeswoman, says the Region’s emergency medical services division “has seen an increase in respi- ratory-related calls for this summer.” The Ontario Medical Association re- cently estimated that smog will cause 210 premature deaths in Durham this year, urging government and individu- als alike to take action. Mr. Garvin has some suggestions. He says Ontario should enact tougher emission standards for vehicles, as is the case in California, which pioneered regulations requiring the auto industry to cut exhaust emissions from cars, trucks and sports utility vehicles. “We’re literally killing people off here,” Mr. Garvin says. ✦ Durham from page 1 Durham dealing with increase in respiratory illnesses Celia Klemenz/ News Advertiser photo John Garvin is ready to head back to the States after finding too much smog to his lik- ing in Durham Region. News flash: it’s too late. Funny how no one has said anything about their grand- parents getting on the band- wagon way back. But, low and behold, now that all of you have your quaint little homes it’s ‘no, no, no’. No more, not now that I have my own spot. I see nothing but ‘not in my area’ syndrome in Pickering. Whites Road ‘No’. Building for the less fortunate ‘No’. Making an airport ‘No’. And on and on. Have you said anything about all the cars on the highways? No again. What are your kids going to do, move downtown, work downtown? Yes, because there is nothing out here for them. Quit thinking about your- selves and think about mak- ing a great community where you can see your children’s, children grow up, work and live. Nothing lasts forever. Another news flash: the af- termath of the airplane crash would not have been the loss of millions of dollars in busi- ness had we had an alternative airport to divert planes. All these ‘not in my neighbour- hood’ things create jobs, not unemployment, which may happen to your children if we keep up the no syndrome. Or they could just move away to a bigger and better place. Denise Lewis Pickering Agricultural preserve a question of integrity To the editor: What is it and where is it? Recent articles in the media caught a glimmer of it a few days ago. The articles report- ed the Province’s plan to pass legislation if Pickering doesn’t reconsider its decision to re- move easements from the Duffins Rouge Agricultural Preserve. As part of the provincial Liberal platform, Premier Dalton McGuinty promised to protect the agricultural preserve in Pickering. Our Pickering council, however, saw fit to unilaterally lift the easements that would protect the preserve after developers launched a lawsuit. The same developers who had signed easements to keep the land agricultural in perpetuity. Far too tempting were the millions they would make if they were allowed to build subdivisions on it. “A local planning issue”, stated Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan. An issue that the plac- ing of the easements to pro- tect these lands in perpetu- ity in 1999, settled, and was agreed to in writing by the Province, the Region, Picker- ing and others. Mayor Ryan’s quote, “They’re (the Province) taking such issue with these lands when there’s a minister’s zon- ing order in place and green- belt in place”. He must be aware that a minister’s zoning order can be lifted at any time and the greenbelt changed, but by lift- ing the easements, the perpe- tuity and the permanence is gone. The premier, who is insist- ing that the easements be re- placed to keep his promise, or the mayor and his coun- cil which will not honour its commitment to the agricul- tural preserve: who has the integrity? Sandy Rider, president Whitevale and District Residents’ Association LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The girl in the big black eye patch really turned heads I came out of an audition last week and, as I stepped out into the blazing heat of Yonge Street, I was greeted with the most refreshing vi- sion. There, walking towards me, was a young woman in a lovely pink sundress. A young woman in a sun- dress is not, in and of itself, much of a revelation on Yonge Street, I’ll grant you. There are hundreds of them. But, what was truly extraordinary about this girl was that she was wearing an eye patch. And not one of your surgi- cal grade, flesh tone, “please don’t look at me I just had surgery” gauzy eye patches. No sir. This was a big, black, leather Bluebeard special, complete with a thick head- band to keep it in place. She might as well have had a gold tooth and a brace of pistols in her belt. And that was the charm of it. I was completely cap- tivated by this bloodthirsty beauty. She flounced along, hair flying in the wind, dress billowing out behind her like a mainsail, completely and utterly oblivious to the fact that she looked like she was about to board a ship. I just smiled as she danced past. I couldn’t help myself. Rarely have I seen so much style, poise and confidence in one individual. In a world of cookie-cutter fashions and belly-button exposing droids, she was a breath of fresh, al- beit salty, air. I’ve met only a handful of people in my life who I thought were genuine origi- nals. There was my buddy Kevin, who was the only kid in high school to wear boxer shorts when everybody else was still clinging to bun-huggers. My old girlfriend’s broth- er, Paul, while the rest of us were dancing like lemmings to disco in the seventies, was listening to Dean Martin al- bums, because he knew good music when he heard it. And my dear friend Daniel whose fiery, wandering spirit tore him out of a marriage and sent him halfway around the world to take beautiful pictures and soothe his rest- less soul. I love these people. I love being near them. It seems to me that they are the best of all of us. Such people are un- usually happy in their own skins. As such, they have very little interest or investment in judging others. They need nothing from anyone and consequently are wonder- fully attentive listeners who make you feel infinitely worth listening to. And finally, they are like mirrors. When you look into one of these peo- ple, you see, reflected in the unblemished crystal of their own pure hearts, exactly who you are, shortcomings and all, but always with just a magical glimpse of who you yet might become. Such people make you feel good. When my lovely pirate breezed past me last week, looking, for all the world, like she might be on her way to a costume ball, I didn’t laugh. Ridicule, sarcasm and derision, those ancient, ugly weapons of self-preservation, were the furthest things from my mind. Instead, I stopped and watched. The smile on my face and in my heart grew as she sailed off into a sea of turning heads. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Originals just make you feel good Neil Crone enter laughing Funding goes long way towards an improved system Day-care dollars a welcome relief After a decade of disappointment, the last year has been very good for the day-care system in Ontario. After all, with the recent announcement of a $1.1-billion federal-funded injection into the provincial system over the next three years, steps are finally being taken to create significant num- bers of new day-care spaces, to reduce waiting lists and to further the quality of care for our children. The announcement of the ‘Best Start Plan,’ comes almost one year to the day after the Province an- nounced $58 million in funding for the system. All those hundreds of millions of dollars are in stark contrast with the decade previous, when the federal Liberals continually pledged to offer monetary help for the staggering system, but time after time failed to follow up on their election promises. So, the relief has been a long time coming. In Durham, the latest round of funding delivers $34.9 million and creates an estimated 770 licensed day-care spaces. Province- wide, the number is 25,000 new spots. The world of today is much different than 30 years ago and in- creasingly both parents in a family are working outside the home. As a result, they are turning in greater numbers than ever to day cares for help, expecting their children to be entertained, educated and, above all else, well cared for. According to Statistics Canada, more than half of all Canadian children were in some form of child-care by 2000-01, and one quarter of them were in a day-care centre. So the new dollars will have a big impact at the feet of our chil- dren. But the announcement offered plenty of other reasons for optimism as well. While traditionally the Province and Durham Region share the cost of day care at 80-20 respectively, for the Best Start program, the Province will pay the full freight. Child-care workers will see an additional $106 million in pay over the three years and a College of Early Childhood Educators is to be set up to establish professional standards for the industry. Further, a panel of experts will look at the recruitment and retention of educators and another will estab- lish a learning program for preschoolers. While long overdue, the reforms and additions will have an im- mediate and lasting effect on our day-care system here in Durham and beyond. Continued cash infusions going forward also ensure the system stays strong on its feet, can start to grapple with its staff retention problem, and will mean more spots for parents who have to work, which of course is essential for our economy. A safe, effective, and educational day-care system is not only good for parents, but for everyone across Durham. No kidding. Ajax and Pickering residents may know her as the operator of Health Movement, a Pilates studio located in Pickering. But people across the country will remember cheering her on as a member of the Canadian Olympic synchronized swimming team at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympic Games. “It’s pretty something,” says the Pickering resident of the Olympic ex- perience. “With all the cameras, and everyone there, you feel like a big rock star. The medal ceremony, with all the flags flying, and the interviews on television, it feels like the world stops and everyone is behind you.” The feeling extended to the com- petition itself, as Letourneau relates. “You can get very overwhelmed. Other competitions don’t have the same hype,” she said. “You try to stay focused. You do the routine hundreds of time, and you think, I’ve just got to do it once more. It feels special, like you’re not thinking, not really there, you’re just focused.” For Letourneau, as for many ath- letes, competing at the Olympics was a dream come true. “The Olympics is where everything started,” she said. “I was watching the 1988 Summer Olympics at home, and I saw the synchronized swim- ming. Canada won the gold, they all had smiles on their faces, and it seemed so easy. I said, ‘this is what I want to do’.” After that it wasn’t long before she got involved in swimming and trained for 16 years. Work with the Canadian National Team was exten- sive. “Our training was based on whole years,” she said. “The first two years, we’d train six to eight hours a day, and the other two years including the Olympic year, we’d train eight to 10 hours. We’d train Monday through Saturday, and have Sundays off.” Training didn’t solely consist of swimming. “There’s lots of running, gymnastics and ballet for flexibility and core training. We’d do weight training, and practice the routine on land. It’s not the same thing every day, and I liked that variety.” Letourneau also noted training so much made it difficult to have a life beyond swimming. “It’s very difficult to do anything else, because it’s so draining emotionally and physically. You just train, sleep and eat.” The hard work paid off in full when the team medalled at the 2000 Sum- mer Games in Sydney, Australia. ”Winning bronze was great. It wasn’t really unexpected, because we worked so hard, but it was our first Olympics. We were all rookies, we had guts, and we did what we had to do. We were looking at the marks, saying, are we really third? It was like a fairy tale.” The team didn’t have time to rest on their laurels, as it went on to more success in competitions like the 2001 World Championships, where it won two bronze medals. At the 2002 Com- monwealth Games, it won gold. Letourneau continued training for the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, which she knew would be her swan song. “Everybody wants to be on the podium, everyone wants gold. Going into Athens we were more experi- enced, and we trained really hard.” Though the team failed to reach the podium, she was still happy with the performance. “There was disappointment for the results, but it doesn’t take anything away from what we did in the pool,” she said. Now retired, she has nothing but fond memories. “I’m satisfied, I have no regrets,” she said. “I wouldn’t go back and change anything, because I wouldn’t be who I am today. I worked really hard, and I don’t think I could have done anything else. SPORTS sportsdurhamregion.com A/P PAGE 8 ◆NEWS ADVERTISER ◆AUGUST 10, 2005 ANNANDALE CHURCH ST. [ Tr ack and Field] Felicien off and running at world championships PICKERING — She’s over the first hurdle. Perdita Felicien easily won her heat in the 100-metre hurdles at the World Track and Field Championships in Helsinki, Finland yesterday. The Pickering runner, who is defending the title she won at the world champi- onships in Paris in 2003, won the heat in a time of 12.77 seconds, one-tenth of a second faster than her nearest competitor. Felicien ran in Lane 8 in the third heat. Priscilla Lopes of Whitby also qualified for the semis in the same event, finishing fourth in her heat in a time of 12.85 seconds. Another Cana- dian, Angela Whyte of Edmonton, has also qualified for the semis. The three Canadians had to en- dure a two-hour rain delay between the first heat and the other four. The semis are to be run today at 12:15 p.m. eastern standard time, while the finals are tomorrow, Aug. 11. For the semifinals, the top two finishers in each of the three heats, along with the two fastest qualifying times, move on to the finals. [ Dragon boat ] Pine Ridge boat on fire in dragonboat competition PICKERING — A crew from Pine Ridge Secondary School went to Germany trying to breath fire on its opponents. The Ridge Race Team were in Berlin competing at the World Ju- nior Dragon Boat championships. The 26-member squad has been together for two years and qualified for the worlds based on its perfor- mance at the Canadian champion- ships in Montreal last year. All of the paddlers are from the Pickering school and all are under 18 years of age. The squad is equally divided between males and females. Team members are Amanda Crozier, Meghan Dever, Megan and Alex Edwards, Tarik El-Tyeb, Ryan Fisher, Kaytee, Jessica and Alison Fulton, Eric Hentschel, Nick Hillier, Aaron Holt, Brennan Huggett, Katie McCarty, Jordan Moss, Aisha Omar, Karl Poyhonen, Ryan Reynolds, Carly Sellen, Ian Stewart, Mike Tr ewartha, Monika Vassiliadis, Paul Viret and Matt Wilson. Coaches are Dan and Angela Evelyn. The championships were held Aug. 3 to 7. [ Baseball ] Spartans set to compete for another OBA title AJAX — The Ajax Spartans Sentinel Self-Storage major peewee ‘AAA’ baseball team continued its exceptional diamond season with a strong performance at the recent Burlington tournament. Af ter going undefeated in the preliminary round, the Ajacians met up with the defending Ontario ‘AAA’ champs, the Mississauga North Tigers, in the semifinal. Ajax, however, fell to the Tigers (no score was reported). So far this season, the Spar- tans major peewees have been on a roll, posting an Eastern Ontario Baseball Association record of 19-2, enabling the team to sit second in their division. The Spartans sail into this season’s Ontario Baseball Associa- tion playdowns with an impressive resume. In 2003, the team captured the OBA ‘A’ title in Sault Ste. Marie and, last season, the team won the ‘AA’ crown in Richmond Hill. This year, the team has set its sights on being competitive at the ‘AAA’ level. Team members are Andrew Cairney, Daniel Cooke, Curtis Dewar, Matrix Ferreira, Jevan Jacobs, Jonathan Kalcovski, Jim Martin, Michael Masterangelo, Jeff Murray, Peter Nash, Chris Robin- son, Jacob Schaaf and Mark Storto. Greg Beckett, Rick Strom, Brandon Hunting and Mendo Kal- covski coach the team. In brief AUGUST 10, 2005 Squad shakes off rust after 10-year absence DURHAM — After spending a de- cade away from competing in the pool, a group of longtime synchro- nized swimming friends are world champions. The eight-member Durham Syn- chro masters team won the title at the recent World Masters Games in Edmonton. “We’re thrilled with our results this year,” says coach and team member Te ri Pearce. “While we all had previ- ous synchronized swimming experi- ence, we hadn’t swam competitively for 10 years.” The team members had competed together as youth, but stopped when they were 18. They kept in contact and last September decided to train for the world masters. Joining Pearce, of Ajax, were Robyn Parashyniak, from Ajax but now liv- ing in Courtice, Tara Agnew, of Whit- by, Kirsten Mills, of Pickering, Lori Noiles, of Ajax, Vanessa Reeves, of Pickering, Shannon Savage, formerly from Ajax but now living in Whitby, and Joy Simon of Scarborough. The Durham squad not only won the team championship, but it also was first overall in both the technical and free competitions. In the duet competition, Savage and Mills took first in the free and in the championship, while in the solo event, Simon grabbed silver in the technical, free and championships. The Durham masters also brought home the Olympium Aggregate Award for the highest scoring aver- age for all swimmers, as well as the coveted Gladys Hambrook Trophy for the highest routine score in Can- ada. Outstanding performances at the Canadian National Masters Synchro Swim Championships in Toronto en- abled the team to head to the worlds. At the nationals, the Durham team placed first in the technical com- petition and the free routine. Mills and Savage earned gold in the duet, while Simon won in the solo cat- egory. To prepare for the return to com- petition, the team swam four hours a week. Durham Synchro team masterful in winning The Durham Synchro masters team was golden in the pool at the World Masters Games in Edmonton. Team members, pictured after the meet, are Teri Pearce, Robyn Parashyniak, Tara Agnew, Kirsten Mills, Lori Noiles, Vanessa Reeves, Shan- non Savage, and Joy Simon. PICKERING — Winning tourna- ments is becoming routine for the Pickering Cougars under-11 boys’ soc- cer team. Playing in the recent Kitchener In- ternational Tournament, the Cougars came home champions after defeating the home team in the finals. It was the fourth tourney win in five tries for Pickering. In the only one they didn’t win, the Cougars were defeated in the finals. Three quick goals had Kitchener on its heals as Pickering ran off to a 5-2 win in the title tilt. The win enabled the local boys to defend the title they won last year. Fa cing Oshawa in the semifinals, Pickering powered its way to a 7-0 vic- tory. In round-robin action, the Cougars clawed Bolton 4-0, trailed London United by a goal before ripping off four straight to win 4-1, and then ham- mered Waterloo 7-0. Te am members are Fraser Aird, Nicholas Axhorn, Peter Boylan, Ryan Boylan, Philip Crowley, Bruce Cullen, Chris Funke, Jalen Griffiths, Darien Hafiz, Justin Haywood, Anthony Novak, Raphael Reynolds, Joseph Roc- casalva, Shane Satar, Sean Smith and Rafiq Suleman. Mike Reynolds is the coach, Kevin Forde the assistant coach and Steve Boylan the manager. No paws from winning for Pickering Cougars A/P PAGE 4 ◆NEWS ADVERTISER ◆AUGUST 10, 2005 Gopal Dua displays a wide range of media in his artwork By David Stell News Editor AJAX — Gopal Dua is living a dual life. The Ajax artist has made a career of media and graphic arts. His work is seen in brochures and advertisements and his talent has won competitions. In fact you’ve seen his work. He’s the man who created the Ajax Pickering Transit Authority logo seen by thou- sands everyday on local buses. He still smiles when he spots it around town. “You can’t miss it walking by or driv- ing by it,” he says. But in his heart Dua was born to paint portraits. His talent for painting people’s likenesses is obvious. Dua’s passion and ability is there to see in a few of his works, like his paint- ings of former prime minister Jean Chretien and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. They’re just a couple of the famous people he has chosen to por- tray in his portraits in acrylic and oil on canvas. “I have been blessed with this tal- ent,” he says. “I want to contribute to society.” His Gretzky is signed by Walter Gretzky, the Great One’s father. He also has a picture of himself when he presented his portrait of former prime minister John Diefenbaker to then Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. His subjects have tended to revolve around political figures and they are remarkable likenesses. “(I) create images which capture the national spirit of our great country in timeless works of art for all Canadians to enjoy,” he explains in a profile of himself. Born and raised in India, where he earned a national diploma in commer- cial art and a bachelor of arts degree. He has lived in Ajax for 17 years now. He takes great pride in the detail in each painting. Pointing to Jean Chre- tien’s silk tie, with it’s intricacies of texture and colour, he says “I like to get everything right.” Aside from commercial and por- trait work, he also dabbles in unique abstract artwork. In his abstracts he says he’s “trying to do things that don’t exist. To create texture and feeling.” We want to highlight the people who make our communities go. This year is my first festival on my own, under my own name. It’s exciting for me. I’m looking forward to working with the other musicians.” Monique, 26, is making a name for herself in jazz circles. Last year, as part of the Archie Alleyne Youth Mentor- ship Program, she was part of Alleyne’s Evolution of Jazz at Toronto’s Down- town Jazz Festival and performed in the Some Mo’ Black Men production of Struttin’ at the Mod Club Theatre. Monique has studied music for years but it wasn’t until she and her fam- ily moved to Ajax in her second year of high school that she thought it might take her somewhere. “That’s really where I got serious about my music,” she said, adding she studied privately with Bill Vincent. “I always liked music. I was always study- ing it.” She attended Humber College’s jazz program, graduating with honours after four years studying jazz, R&B and Latin music. “That was great because of the va- riety. There was so much opportunity to perform, to get the actual practical experience,” she said. Now, she works part-time at Sun- nybrook hospital and works on her music. “I probably express myself best with music,” she said. “You can’t stop work- ing. I always have to be learning some- thing new. If I don’t practise, I feel I’m losing it. It’s something I want to work at for the rest of my life.” As for jazz, it’s her preferred style. “I just love how experimental it is. The experimental aspect of it is so free- ing. There’s so many different kinds of jazz. You can mix jazz with anything these days. I just find it so exciting.” She also performs as part of the Big Event, the Aug. 13 free, daylong concert in Memorial Park in downtown Os- hawa. She’s part of Jaymz Bee’s Babes in Jazzland, along with Genevieve, Marieve Herington, Lyne Tremblay, Julie Michels and Elizabeth Shepherd. They’re on stage at 7 p.m. DURHAM — The Oshawa Jazz and Blues Festival is underway and offers several days of great music and enter- tainment for people of all ages.
