Nearly a month ahead of their peers in the traditional system, students on the modified calen- dar at Whitby’s CE Broughton Public School and Winchester Public School in Brooklin head back to class Tuesday, Aug. 9. “They just get back at it, it’s almost like they never left,” said Lesley Lepine, Broughton’s prin- cipal. Although participants receive the same amount of instructional days, they break more frequently throughout the year. Students have two weeks off for Thanksgiv- ing, a Christmas break, two weeks for March break, four extra days attached to the May Victoria Day weekend and the month of July for summer vacation. Of CE Broughton’s approxi- mately 500 students, about 300 are on the modified calendar. En- tering its 10th year at the school, the program started off small in 1996 when the school opened and has continued to grow, said Ms. Lepine. She estimated a 10 per cent increase this year. Students throughout the region are able to attend the school’s modified program provided they find their own transportation. The release references a July 18 column by Canadian writer George Jonas in a national news- paper that said the July 7 terror- ist acts in London “vindicated” a speech made 37 years ago by a British MP. The release said the speech predicted “immigration, if done badly, would cause conflict and violence.” Coun. Brenner brought forward the motion requesting the release be investigated as it relates to the Criminal Code and the pub- lic incitement of hatred. It passed unanimously. “To suggest that immigrants are the cause of terrorism is not only stereotyping but also hate and it has to be stopped,” he said. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean, a retired police officer, said the release was spreading “hate and fear mongering.” Immigration Watch Canada is 35.2//-3s7).$/73s2//&).' 905-686-2445 Visit our showroom 239 Station St., Ajax Manufacturer of SUNROOMS & WINDOWS A REAL HEAD FOR THE BALL Mike Pochwat/ News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Blair Williams, 10, left of Pickering, goes for a head- er against Joseph Roccasalva, 11, who absorbed most of the impact during a scrimmage at Diana Princess of Wales Park in Pickering. On Tuesday, July 26 at around 4:15 a.m., a homeowner on Val- ley Ridge Crescent woke up to the sound of three unknown males entering his residence. The homeowner and the men struggled, at which point the homeowner was punched several times and restrained with duct tape, according to Durham Regional Police. The suspects stole a 42-inch plasma television, and the homeowner’s wallet and cell- phone and left in his 2005 silver BMW. Police say the suspects later used several of the victim’s credit cards at various stores in Scarborough. All three suspects are de- scribed as males in their early 20s. Bank surveillance cameras captured an image of one of the suspects, which can be viewed on the Durham police website at www.drps.ca under media releases. The only contact for the organization is an e-mail address, and two requests for interviews were not returned. “This is a very thin line on freedom of speech and this group is pushing the line,” Coun. McLean said. “It hurts (new Canadians) to have groups that slam them and paint them with an unfair brush,” he said. “This group has gone way beyond free speech.” Coun. Brenner said mate- rial such as this is something all Canadians should be con- cerned about. “The fact that it’s sourced here in Canada is a disgrace to all Canadians,” he said. A copy of the motion is to be forwarded to the British Co- lumbia government so it can deal with it under provincial legislation. ✦ Pushing, From Page 1 ‘Pushing the line’ on freedom of speech Police search for clues to home invasion Summer Company program gives young entrepreneurs a boost By Jillian Follert Staff Writer DURHAM — Like cash-strapped stu- dents everywhere, Chris Appleton start- ed thinking about a summer job long before wrapping up his first year at York University. The 18-year-old Courtice resident knew he didn’t want to spend his break flipping burgers or mowing lawns, so he went online and checked out a gov- ernment program called Summer Com- pany. Halfway through the summer he is now the proud owner of a T-shirt com- pany called Stack’d, with his products hanging in Oshawa’s popular Alcatraz skate and snowboard store. “I’m learning a lot about marketing, balancing my time, and just running a business,” Mr. Appleton said. “It’s a good experience because one day I’d like to have a career related to design.” Summer Company, offered by the Ministry of Enterprise, Opportunity and Innovation, helps students between the ages of 15-29 get a business off the ground by providing start-up funding, mentoring and training. The program is coordinated locally by the Business Advisory Centre Durham (BACD). Budding entrepreneurs are re- quired to apply with a detailed business plan and cash flow forecast in the spring. If accepted, they are matched with a vol- unteer business mentor and provided with 12 hours of hands-on training and up to $3,000 in funding. “This year we had 100 applicants, which was very exciting,” said Sue Cas- tanier, a small business coordinator with the BACD. “The seven who were select- ed have worked hard to launch exciting new businesses. It’s been great to watch them learn from their mentors.” Mr. Appleton said Alcatraz owner Jason King has been a great mentor, walking him through the intricacies of owning a small business. Stack’d now offers a line of five T-shirt designs, which Mr. Appleton creates using a combination of hand drawing and graphic design programs. He hopes to have them in more stores by the end of the summer. Up in Scugog, 17-year-old Billy Knight is another Summer Company success story. The Port Perry High School student put his Canadian Water Skiing Associa- tion certification to good use by starting Performance Edge Watersports, a com- pany offering private and group lessons in water skiing, tubing and wakeboard- ing. Other Summer Company businesses launched in Durham this summer in- clude a house painting service, private swimming lessons and a backyard hair salon. Many activities occur during or right after school hours so the following tips are for busy parents who want to make physical activity a part of their children’s lives. BE PREPARED •Keep a copy of the schedule on the refrig- erator with activity times and locations high- lighted. •Packing at the last minute can mean forgot- ten items, so be sure to get children’s back- packs ready the night before. •Backpacks with extra side pockets are ide- al for keeping soiled shoes and wet water bottles separate from dry clothes and school- books. Choose a trendy backpack with their favourite character like Batman or Barbie so kids won’t want to leave it behind. •Kids get thirsty. Freeze water bottles the night before so beverages stay cool and don’t for- get to pack extra snacks to keep kids ener- gized. •Weather can change over the course of the day so be sure to pack a lightweight, weath- erproof jacket, extra socks and a towel, and all other essentials for the after school activ- ity. GET EQUIPPED •Obtain a list of required items at time of reg- istration and head to the appropriate store for their correct attire or equipment. •Protective gear like shin pads, elbow pads or mouth guards are a must for many sports so keep that in mind when outfi tting your child. •Don’t forget a pump to help keep soccer balls, footballs, basketballs, and volleyballs infl ated. •Teach children the importance of taking care of their equipment. After each activity have your child wipe off cleats and put away clothes tidy in their backpacks. - News Canada FALL REGISTRATION Advertising FeatureAdvertising After school activities made easy dents are on the modified program and 350 on the regular, said principal Bob Wilson. It has been offered there for several years. The school has some students who have only ever been on the modified program and there’s been a steady increase in its popula- tion, said Mr. Wilson. Ms. Lepine and Mr. Wilson have no- ticed less review needed for students in the modified school year when they return after summer vacation. They also fall into the school routine soon- er. “It’s not as difficult to do when you haven’t been away for nine or 10 weeks,” said Ms. Lepine. With less review required, students spend more time on the curriculum throughout the year, she added. “I find attendance is generally bet- ter with the modified year,” said Mr. Wilson. He has observed less stress on the students and teachers on the modified calendar, particularly around Christmas and summer vaca- tions because of the frequent breaks. By having the regular and modi- fied options available, special labs and libraries can also be used more frequently, said Mr. Wilson. Teachers can plan special projects when they know the other schedule is on holi- day. “The only thing I’ve heard basical- ly from the parents is they’re happy, they’re content with the modified pro- gram,” said Whitby Trustee John Dols- tra. Mr. Wilson is “cautiously optimist” more schools will join the modified school year in the future. The amount of new development in Brooklin as well as the number of younger students going into Win- chester’s modified calendar, makes Trustee Dolstra speculate the area will continue to see growth in its program durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, AUGUST 7, 2005 PAGE 5 A/P SERVING DURHAM REGION SINCE 1970 725-9731 Call for details! That’s in spite of the wide range of penalties in place to pro- tect against the careless drivers and to save all the others out there who are forced to share the road with them. So it was this past August long weekend, when 1,500 charges were laid across the Greater Toronto Area by Ontario Provin- cial Police officers. Some 200 charges were laid by officers working out of the Whitby OPP detachment for all manner of Highway Traffic Act violations. Of particular concern are those thoughtless drivers who continue to get behind the wheel after having had too much to drink. The constant advertising in all manner of media about the dangers of drinking and driving, for some reason, still has not gotten through to those who flout the law. Ta ke for instance the driver in Clarington who pulled up to a RIDE stop off Hwy. 35/115 with an open beer in his car or the driver on Hwy. 7 in Brock Township who had open beer in his car and the excuse that he was unfairly charged because he got off work early for the long weekend. What one has to do with the other is beyond anybody’s guess. There were a multitude of unsafe vehicles out there on our roadways as well. One man jerryrigged his trailer, which had bad tires, a couple of tire irons and bungee cord holding a load of furniture on it. In the past, blitzes have caught people cooking in their ve- hicles, reading books or newspapers, applying makeup, and all manner of activities that cannot possibly be done while maintaining proper care and control of a vehicle. People need to get the clear message that driving requires concentration and diligence. It’s not meant to be a part of multi-tasking. Lives are at stake but it seems some drivers need the police to remind them of that fact. Religions should renounce violence together To the editor: As a result of the recent terrorist attack in London, it does not make sense that only the Muslim Imams are being put under intense pressure to renounce violence. It is true that indiscriminate violence against civilians is ab- horrent. However, using violence against civilians to intimidate and cow governments has been practised openly as state policy since the Second World War. History tells us that indiscrimi- nate bombing of cities in Europe and in Japan (Hiroshima and Nagasaki) was state sponsored to demoralize the opponents. Thus, indiscriminate bombing of civilian targets became a norm under the guise of collateral damage. Using terror to counteract terrorism is common place today as state policy, which is also practised by groups seeking what they consider justice and redress by violence. Judaism, Christianity and Islam are at the core of the current conflict, all three believing that their form of justice and the infliction of terror are sanctioned by God. One would like to think whether the God is called Yaweh or Allah it is the same God invoked to seek redress and justice. Although we would like to think that religion is secular from the state, atrocities are being committed by believing that God is on the side of the aggressor. Since there is only one God, then it would make sense for the Rabbis, Priests and Imams to form a holy alliance and together renounce violence and find an equitable solution in the name of justice. In seeking justice, politics and religion cannot be separated. Injustice is one of the roots that breeds violence. Balanced calendar gives students more continuity A lthough it means going to school almost a month before their peers, the modified school calendar is a pretty good deal for students. On Aug. 9, kids on the modified cal- endar at C.E. Broughton Public School in Whitby and Winchester Public School in Brooklin take their seat in class after only one month of summer vacation. Although they get a shorter summer holi- day than their peers in the regular system, they’re by no means missing out. Both groups attend the same amount of school days, but kids on the modi- fied system basically bank August vaca- tion time for extra time off throughout the year. They receive two weeks holiday for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and March break, as well as four extra days for the May Victoria Day weekend and a sum- mer vacation for the month of July. It’s actually surprising more people haven’t taken advantage of the modified program. Entering its 10th year at Broughton and only more recently available at Win- chester, the modified calendar’s popu- larity has been gradually increasing. At Broughton, about 300 of its approximate 500 students are in the program. There, the option is open to all of Durham’s students, provided they have their own transportation. Winchester’s 700 students are split 50-50 between the modified and regular calendars. According to the principals at Brough- ton and Winchester, students return to class in August refreshed from their one month break and require less time re- viewing the previous year’s studies and getting back into the school routine. With less recap needed, the kids are able to spend more time on the curriculum. There are other benefits too. It gives parents more freedom to plan vacations and allows more efficient use of school labs because teachers can plan special projects when they know less students are in school. Winchester’s principal, Bob Wilson, has also noticed attendance ap- pears better for teachers and students on the modified calendar. He added they appear less stressed, particularly before Christmas and summer vacations. With more vacation time throughout the year, it seems much more beneficial than making kids sit at home bored. In a long hot summer, two months can seem like an eternity for an elementary student on the traditional calendar. How many reruns can youngsters watch be- fore they get kicked outside and are left with nothing better to do than watch the grass grow or discover new ways to get in trouble? Reporter Mike Ruta and photographer Walter Passarella will retell the stories they’ve heard and the things they’ve seen in this summer-long series which will be pub- lished each Sunday. By Mike Ruta Staff Writer IQALUIT — Ho hum the Queen is com- ing. For a remote Canadian school, Inuksuk High School sees a lot of celebrities because it is, after all, just three hours by air from Ot- tawa. It’s also in Nunavut’s capital and the largest school in the territory, with just over 500 students. So when a government minister’s handler recently queried that everyone must be ex- cited about the coming visit, he was met with blank stares. Queen Elizabeth II has been here twice, and there have also been vis- its from Jean Chretien, Paul Martin, Helmut Kohl, Jacques Chirac and so on. Inuksuk High School sits atop a hill in Iqa- luit. It’s two-tone blue and the windows look like portholes on a ship. The central meeting place is called the tisi, or polar bear den. Principal Terry Young says most of the students in the Grade 8 to 12 school are Inuit, and they don’t just come from Iqaluit, but from all over Nunavut. Mixed into the popu- lation are white kids, the children of parents who have come to the north for work. “There’s more emphasis on cultural issues here, because there’s sort of the blending of a couple of cultures,” he says. Mr. Young and his wife had been coming to the north since 1978 and decided to stay to experience some adventure. After stints in Pangnirtung and Cape Dorset, five years ago he came to Inuksuk. “It’s fun; you get to see lots of friends,” says Grade 10 student Barrie Gunn, of going to the school. Grade 8 student Virgil Williams, like many, enjoys snowmobiling and has his own ma- chine. He says there are lots of sports in the school such as hockey and indoor soccer and basketball. “We like to do the same things as down south, but it’s a lot colder,” Barrie says. At the nearby Nakasuk School, principal Tracey Hanlon says there are 347 students in kindergarten to Grade 5, and a lot of pupil transience. Families move up north and many move back south after a few years. “It’s more in waves, so our population stays pretty much the same,” she says. “Every three, four or five years it’s a different set of chil- dren.” Some students walk and bike to school when the weather’s warmer, but in winter everyone, even those who live nearby, is bused in the morning, at lunch and after school because of the darkness, slippery roads and high snow banks that make visibility poor. Lunch period is two hours in length. An “almost full-time” cultural teacher visits each classroom twice a week. “He teaches everything from qamatik (wooden sled) making to how to prepare skins,” Ms. Hanlon says. “He teaches them the patience of hunting in game form.” She says the student population is about 50/50 Inuit and white and that the children mix well. “You have white kids who are in the In- uktitut program because their parents figure they’re learning English at home and vice versa,” she says. At the tiny Nanook School in Apex, prin- cipal Hillary da Silva says “our problem is to make sure students speak Inuktitut at home” because English is becom- ing so common. The kindergarten to Grade 5 school has just 58, mostly Inuit students, who learn in Inuktitut in the primary grades. Mr. da Silva is pretty much on his own at the school, choosing his own curriculum re- sources. Parents such as Jacopoosie Peter help keep the school running efficiently. “I guess the next step is to form parents councils; it was the intent from the begin- ning,” he says of the Northwest Territories’ Education Act, to be replaced by a Nunavut act. “Parents are not involved enough; lack of volunteer spirit, I guess. When schools started up north here, there was a conflict between government and elders’ versions of child-rearing. In the old days it was the role of the elders.” Back at Inuksuk High School, teacher Bryon Doherty says he raises and discuss issues with students, tying them in to the world outside of Iqaluit. He finds teaching here preferable to his former, inner-city Toronto school. “I think when you’re down south you don’t have as much of a sense of community,” he says. Inuksuk is more than just a school. Com- munity and sports groups and clubs make good use of it. Students have opportunities to take trips to Alberta and even farther afield, with more than 250 travelling outside of Iqa- luit this past school year. Shop teacher Matthew Alainga says the Inuit are not concerned that young people might want to leave for what the outside world offers, saying, “that’s life. “We just remind them that they are Inuit. They don’t forget who they are.” newsdurhamregion.com searchkeyword:nunavut2005 Next week: HUNTING, an integral part of Inuit culture School PA RT 5: INUIT CULTURE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE CURRICULUM Walter Passarella/This Week photos Students at Nakasuk School in Iqaluit reminded visiting journalists it’s dangerous to ‘go out on the land’ without food, a tent, a stove and a jug for water. Michael Cooper Flaherty, Victoria McLean and Amber McEvoy all have a healthy respect for polar bears and enjoy hunting with their families. Their curiosity about life in Durham Region includes questions like: “Do you have polar bears in Durham? Are there many bear attacks? What’s your school’s name? Do you guys use sleds down there?” Walter Passarella/ News Advertiser photo A/P PAGE 8 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, AUGUST 7, 2005 durhamregion.com Beyond Freud: how talk therapy can change your life Depression, anxiety, social phobia and other mental dis- orders can be as debilitating as physical illness. But what are the risks and benefits associated with drug therapy versus “talk” therapy? According to a survey published by Consumer Reports in 2004, in which more than 3,000 respondents participated, drug treatments may work faster on symptoms, but they also have more serious side effects than people realize. Talk therapy with a qualified mental health practitioner, on the other hand, can yield equally effective results as medi- cation – but without any long-term dependency or undesir- able effects. Dr. David Direnfeld is one such practitioner. As a clinical psychologist who specializes in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), he has observed first-hand the remarkable impact CBT has had on his patients. “I have seen astonishing, dra- matic changes in patients who never thought it was possible to overcome their fears and worries,” he says. CBT is an evidence-based breakthrough in mental health care. Dr. Direnfeld, who has been practicing CBT since the early 90s, is now the clinical director of the Centre for Cog- nitive Behaviour Therapy in Ajax, a treatment facility com- mitted to using research-based mental health treatments. “Helping people change their lives using CBT is, honestly, the most rewarding part of my job. It’s quite astounding.” Here’s how it works. CBT focuses on how our thoughts influence our feelings and behaviours. Every mental disorder – like depression, anxiety or panic disorder – is the result of distorted, irrational thought patterns. Usually there is a particular situation or trigger – like, for example, dirt/ germs, a crowded mall or a traumatic memory – which causes an unusually high level of dis- tress. It is not, how- ever, the situation or trigger which causes distress. It is, instead, our distort- ed interpretation of it. And these ha- bitual distortions in thinking – or “au- tomatic thoughts” – can cause people to withdraw, panic, avoid situations or engage in other self-defeating be- haviour. CBT uses struc- tured techniques to change distorted thought patterns by weakening the con- nection between distressing stimuli and our automatic reactions to them. During the CBT treatment, patients discover new ways of dealing with dif- ficult situations, of- ten through gradual exposure to them. The goal is accu- rate and rational thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Drugs alone might make you feel better faster – sure. But well-re- searched “talk” treatments like that of CBT are just as effec- tive – and longer lasting. Just look at the evidence. Study after study shows CBT to be as effective as medication in treating conditions like depres- sion, and better than medication for treating conditions like anxiety. “These are well-documented facts,” says Dr. Direnfeld. “So it’s my job, essentially, to work myself out of a job – and help patients get bet- ter.” The Centre for Cognitive Be- haviour Therapy is located at 95 Bayly Street West, in Ajax. Some individuals are better able to detoxify than others, and we should never compare one person to another as each one of us is bio-chemically unique. Detoxifi cation happens in stages and sometimes diffi culty can be experienced in the fi rst or second stage. Professional products exist that facilitate the different stages of detoxifi cation. These products and the practice of good lifestyle habits are essential requirements to combat disease, and return a person to a better state of health. The body has to be prepared to cleanse properly and this preparation is necessary to avoid stressing the system and experiencing unpleasant side effects. Also, detoxifi cation is nutrient dependent, so an assessment for nutritional defi ciencies is a great place to begin. This can be achieved through a Hair Mineral Analysis laboratory report. Also consider Food Sensitivity Testing to expose and eliminate foods that cause reactions and add more stress to the liver. Here are a few facts about detoxification people should be more aware of… • The liver fi lters blood (almost two quarts every minute). When the liver is overburdened and doesn’t do this well the fi ltration system is not effi cient. • The liver manufactures bile (about one quart per day) this bile is stored in the gall bladder for secretion. In cases where the gall bladder has been removed, so has the storage facility for the bile, and an additional job is placed on the liver. P eople concerned with losing weight should be extra cautious as they need to breakdown fat which is where a lot of the toxins are stored, and this adds an additional burden to the detoxifi cation process. Therefore, people that need to lose a lot of fat should be guided professionally to ensure their health doesn’t deteriorate. For more information about the detoxifi cation method that is right for you and steps you can take to be on your way to a healthier you, call Karen Steward, a Health Professional in the D urham Region at (905) 837-6627. we’ll give you a reason to smile... ...at the Deegan Denture Clinics Full & Partial Dentures Same Day Relines & Repair Soft Liners Implant Dentures BPS® Dentures Complimentary Consultations Michael C. This year’s RBC Seniors Jubilee at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto is sure to be a hit, with many out- standing performers hailing from Durham Region. The 17th annual RBC Seniors Jubilee attracts more than 1,300 show veterans and debuts performers from across Ontario. Volunteers produce and star in a variety show featuring outstanding dancing, singing and comedy. The seniors perform to a crowd of more than 3,000 every year in a show from Aug. 15 to 19 at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto. At 11 a.m. each day the show be- gins with a two-hour pre-concert musical midway, with a variety of dancers, singers and comedians performing before the show even begins. The actual live-stage show be- gins at 1 p.m. and runs until 4 p.m. No two shows are alike, everyday different performers are featured. Sandy and Gord Brittain of Pick- ering will be showcased this year. This is one of many performances where their outstanding ability as ballroom and Latin dancers can be seen. The couple began dancing over 25 years ago. “We started by learning to move around the dance floor and then we were hooked,” says Mrs. Brit- tain. The Brittains were the three- time Ontario Senior (35+) Latin champions and Canadian finalists in Senior Championship Standard and Latin competition and have competed at the prestigious week- long Blackpool Dance Festival, in England. They are all 10 dancers, mean- ing that they compete and dance all of the Standards and Latin dances. This is the highest level of competition to reach. The Brittains also perform in many shows around Toronto, at the Hummingbird Centre and on the waterfront on Dance Nights. The couple is heavily involved in dancing and the administra- tive process. Mrs. Brittain is the president of the Canadian Ama- teur DanceSport Association and spends her time between organiz- ing and rehearsing. The Brittains spend an average of four to six hours a week rehears- ing. For the Jubilee they started training in January and now that the show is getting closer, they spend most of their free time at dance studios. For aspiring dancers, Mrs. Brit- tain offers this advice: “Start off in a group class and get a taste of the dances. Have fun and if you want to pursue dancing join a semi- private or private class. A lot of the smaller studios have great classes as opposed to the big commercial studios. Most importantly be pre- pared to practise.” The Brittains can be seen in their inspiring Latin solo on Aug. 17 and every day in the opening durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, AUGUST 7, 2005 PAGE 11 A/P EARLYBIRD Heading South Next Season? In fact, it’s his business. “I’ve been doing hockey de- velopment for about nine years,” said the owner and director of Hockey Performance, which pro- vides on- and off-ice instruction for hockey players looking to take their game to the next level. “We do conditioning and skill development in the summer,” said the Ajax resident. “We work on strength and cardiovascular conditioning, speed and power. We do a lot of resistance training, core training, and a lot of run- ning.” On-ice sessions are just as in- tense. “We do a lot of shooting, quick feet agility skating, and on-ice resistance,” he said. “We work on shooting, pass- ing, flow drills, and goaltending training.” Hockey Performance provides a number of different training opportunities, from one-on-one sessions at Kirton’s home, to ses- sions with groups of five kids. It also runs practice sessions for teams and camps, offering on-ice sessions at Art Thompson Arena (1474 Bayly St.) in Picker- ing. Hockey Performance was cre- ated to give more attention to the development of an individual player’s skills. “Teams are busy, and they don’t get to enhance the player’s development. The practices are based on team systems, team concepts, and team skills and development. “Our programs are designed to enhance an individual’s on-ice and off-ice performance.” Kirton hopes his focus be- comes a part of more coaching strategies. “We do mentoring for coaches. We want to train coaches to do this themselves,” he said. The organization also gives players a chance to take their training off the ice, an opportu- nity that can be scarce. “There was a need for off-ice training that wasn’t being addressed, and people asked for it. The kids needed more, we started running some off-ice programs, and it’s grown from there.” Kirton possesses an exten- sive hockey background, having played university hockey for Ry- erson and he is currently the head coach of the North York Rangers midget ‘AAA’ club, as well as the assistant general manager of the North York Rangers junior ‘A’. He also guides player develop- ment for the Rangers’ and the Goulding Park hockey associa- tions. “We’ve worked with kids who play at the ‘A’ level, and within a couple years they’ve developed into ‘AAA’ players,” he said. Among its most notable gradu- ates are Trevor Daley, of the NHL’s Dallas Stars, and Eric Himelfarb, who plays for the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, a farm team for the De- troit Red Wings. For Kirton, it’s rewarding to see his students reach such levels. “It’s like being part of a family, and it’s pretty special when they attain that success.” For more information on Hockey Performance, call 905- 427-7537.
