Bothered by mess
along Hwy. 401
By Danielle Milley
Staff Writer
PICKERING — The gateways to
Pickering are littered with garbage
and council wants the Province to
do something about it.
“When you get off at Whites
(Road) what’s the first thing you see?
Garbage everywhere. When you get
off at Brock what’s the first thing
you see? Garbage everywhere,” said
Wa rd 1 Regional Councillor Mau-
rice Brenner.
He brought forward a motion at
Monday’s council meeting request-
ing the Province provide sufficient
resources to the Ministry of Trans-
portation so that it can clean up the
litter along Hwy. 401 and its inter-
changes.
Coun. Brenner said he’s received
numerous complaints from resi-
dents about the state of the gate-
ways into the community.
“The Whites Road interchange
has to be the filthiest in Durham
Region... I’m appalled by the condi-
tions and so are the residents. That’s
the gateway to our community,” he
said.
City staff contacted MTO about
the situation and Everett Buntsma,
director of operations and emer-
gency services, said they were told
the Province only picks up larger
items that are a safety concern.
Ministry spokesperson Bob Nich-
ols said the top priority is to keep
highways safe and efficient. Con-
tracted maintenance workers patrol
on a regular basis and pick up items
that would be a safety hazard, he
said.
“Other litter, we get to it when we
can as time and resources permit,”
he added.
The City feels that level of mainte-
nance is not enough and is also ask-
ing for the standards to be reviewed
to ensure the needs of the city are
addressed.
“It is appalling to see the amount
of litter on the off ramp,” said Ward 2
Regional Councillor Bill McLean.
He said that image is not one the
City wants to present to visitors and
if residents see litter already there
they’ll continue doing it.
Ward 3 City Councillor David
Pickles agreed.
“People are throwing their gar-
bage out because they see garbage
there... The MTO is basically shirk-
ing its responsibility there in not

PICKERING — Police are seek-
ing a “person of interest” in the
beating and robbery of a Pickering
man during a home invasion-style
incident early Tuesday.
A number of pictures of a young
black man taken by a security
camera at an automated teller ma-
chine in Scarborough have been
posted on the Durham Regional
Police website, www.drps.ca. The
images were captured around 5
a.m. Tuesday, shortly after a doc-
tor was roughed up and robbed,
police said.
The victim was asleep at his Val-
ley Ridge Crescent home around
4 a.m. when he was awakened by
three young men who’d entered
the house. The man was beaten
and tied with duct tape by the sus-
pects, who made off with a large
plasma TV, as well as his cellphone,
wallet, and his 2005 BMW. The
man sustained minor injuries.
Police traced cards from the
victim’s wallet to the bank ma-
chine in the Sheppard Avenue and
Markham Road area. The four-
door silver BMW, licence plate
AWEK 286, has not yet been lo-
cated. Anyone who spots the car
or who recognizes the man in the
photo is asked to call police at 905-
579-1520, extension 2524.

Woman discovers
family heirloom in
Ajax parking lot
By David Blumenfeld
Staff Writer
DURHAM — An Oshawa
woman has spent the last month
tracking down the history, and
the rightful owner, of a brooch
she found in the corner of an
Ajax parking lot on Canada Day.
Kathy Ballik, 46, said she was
running an errand July 1 when
she found the toonie-sized
brooch in the parking lot of Van-
dermeer Nursery and Garden
Centre, in the area of Lakeridge
Road and Victoria Street West.
“The sun hit the stones on it
and I bent down and I picked it
up. My initial thought was that
it was a war medal,” Ms. Ballik
said.
Over the course of several
weeks, Ms. Ballik said she began
researching the origin of the
brooch, which is made of enam-
el and diamonds. It was soon
discovered to be a “sweetheart
brooch,” which she said were
sent home to relatives by high-
ranking officers in the Royal Tank
Regiment, a unit of the British
Army. The Royal Tank Regiment
Museum in England has dated
the brooch back to anywhere
from 1924 to 1953.
“It would have been given to a
sweetheart, a wife or maybe even
a mother,” Ms. Ballik said. “I look
at it, and it looks like it’s been
worn almost all the time. It’s well
worn, well loved and that’s why
in my heart I just keep thinking
it needs to go where it belongs.
I keep thinking if the lady that
it was given to is still alive, how
heartbroken she must be to have
lost that after all these years?”
Ms. Ballik said legions and mu-
seums have expressed interest
in putting the brooch on perma-
nent display. However, for the
time being she said she will hold
on to the brooch, which she said
has been appraised at more than
$1,500, in the hopes the rightful
owner will identify it and take
back possession.
“There’s some distinctive
things on it that only they would
know,” she said. “I just want to
find the owner. It belongs with
the people, with the family.”
Ms. Ballik can be reached at
905-436-9608.
If the owner does not come
forward, Ms. Ballik said she will
to donate the brooch to the Royal
Tank Museum in England.

cleaning up,” he said. “It’s a disgrace. It’s
an awful first impression.”
Coun. Bill McLean suggested a cost-
effective solution.
“We have a lack of funds but we don’t
have a lack of criminals in our jail cells
that are not high risk or violent offenders
who could be doing roadwork,” he said.
Mr. Nichols said MTO recently started
a partnership with the Ministry of Com-
munity Safety and Correctional Servic-
es.
“Some low-risk inmates, non-violent
inmates, who would be otherwise serv-
ing weekend jail sentences will be pick-
ing up litter along highways in the GTA,”
he said.
The program is just getting underway
and is now focused on a few sites in the
west GTA.

IQALUIT — In Iqaluit, the art comes to
you.
Sculptors bring their pieces in stone,
ivory and antler to the dinner crowd in
restaurants, selling them on the spot after
some haggling over a price. Inuit soap-
stone carvings are known around the
world, but Brian Lunger, manager-curator
of the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum,
says the medium is a relatively new one for
territory artists.
“Traditionally, people would tend to
make small figurines, primarily out of
ivory, sometimes stone, although that was
much less common,” he says of earlier art.
“Usually they would be amulets or have
spiritual significance.”
However as non-Inuit started to appear
with more regularity in the north, whal-
ers, traders and others took a fancy to the
pieces produced by local carvers, and the
Inuit began making more of it to trade for
tobacco, gun powder, knives and wood,
Mr. Lunger says. Soon pieces that depicted
Inuit life became in demand, a combina-
tion of both art and souvenir. Stone carv-
ing really emerged in the late 1940s, he
says, when the people’s lifestyle changed
and the Hudson’s Bay Company would
bring works to Winnipeg to sell.
“As people started being settled in the
communities, the government of the time
had to think about ways these people
could make a living,” Mr. Lunger says.
“A rtwork was something that had had suc-
cess.”
In the early 1950s, co-operatives were
established in Nunavut communities,
where artists and craftspeople could trade
their work for credit in the town’s store.
Mr. Lunger says Cape Dorset “is a re-
ally strong artistic community and I’d say
there are more artists there per capita
than anywhere,” with about 60 per cent
of the population creating art. With mo-
dernity came other art forms, including
print-making, with communities such as
Pangnirtung famous for the prints made
there. Today, arts and crafts are a key com-
ponent of the Nunavut economy.
A part of the Iqaluit museum is the old
Hudson’s Bay warehouse with its famil-
iar red roof. It contains carvings, cloth-
ing, tools and other Inuit artifacts. The
stone carvings, from all over Nunavut,
reflect sometimes the whimsical in Inuit
art, such as Clyde River artist Solomonie
Tigullaraq’s large soapstone of jovial polar
bears, ‘Bears playing the accordion.’ But
most often they depict scenes from every-
day life: ‘Woman with child in her amou-
tiq,’ by Rhoda Tassurapik Olayuq; ‘Man
carrying seal,’ and ‘Man blowing into seal-
skin float.’ Other carvings are in sponge-
like whalebone or walrus-tusk ivory.
In Iqaluit, a visitor can buy a sculpture
for $100 or less. In Toronto, a similar piece
might sell for $200, $300 or even more.
At the annual Wadding-
ton’s auction of Inuit
art in Toronto, Inuit
sculptures and
prints have sold
for tens of thou-
sands of dollars.
Harry Ikalukjuak, 55, has
been carving for more than
40 years, always in stone.
As a boy he took a fancy
to the north’s most
dangerous creature,
making it his favou-
rite subject.
“I mostly like
to carve polar
bears,” he says.
Born in Pangnirtung, he’s lived in Iqa-
luit for most of his life. Mr. Ikalukjuak says
he makes 10 or 15 carvings a week, spend-
ing about two hours on each with power
tools such as an electric grinder. He often
takes his work south to sell in Ottawa and
Montreal.
Soapstone is a general term for all the
northern stone used for carving. Mr. Lung-
er says the jade-like green serpentine is
scarce now, not a true soapstone and tied
to Cape Dorset artists. Grey soapstone
with rusty veins comes from Arc-
tic Bay. Similarly, Inuit art has
stylistic and thematic differ-
ences, depending on where
you are in the territory.
“In the Baffin (Region)
there’s more uniformi-
ty, as far as what you
would see,” Mr. Lung-
er says. “In Kivalliq
Region, things tend
to be more simple.
In Kitikmeot, they make crazy spirit
carvings that are kind of grotesque.”

EDITORIAL
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
We should dance to
the tune of the U.S.
We need to be in synch with
our largest trading partner
During the long, cold Canadian winters, getting out of
bed in the mornings is even harder when the sun isn’t
up yet. And mornings will be darker for a full hour
longer if the United States extends daylight saving time and
Ontario follows suit.
Of course, there is the bonus of an extra hour of light at the
end of the day. During the shortest days of the year, one can
head out of the office before 5 p.m. and still be driving home in
full darkness.
But one’s personal preference on whether we get that hour of
sunlight in the morning or in the evening will be a moot point
if the U.S. approves a daylight saving extension this fall, to take
effect in 2007. Being out of step with the States time-wise, for
just two months each year, will cause us greater headaches than
having to head off to work and school by streetlight.
In the global economy, time zones and differences around
the world are a fact of life. But remembering to juggle time with
our southern neighbours for two out of 12 months is an unnec-
essary annoyance. Ontario has always kept in step with the U.S.,
following its lead 19 years ago when the Americans advanced
the date for moving clocks ahead from the end of April to the
beginning of the month. Since the country is our largest trading
partner, it makes economic sense to synchronize our watches.
The business community has expressed concern that adjust-
ments to just-in-time delivery systems around the province will
cost money and cause trading disruptions. Airline flights, the
To ronto Stock Exchange, conference calls and other aspects of
daily business life would be affected.
Some argue the Daylight Saving extension, proposed to save
energy costs, will in fact realize limited savings. And that might
be true, if a prediction of a two per cent energy savings by
analysts proves accurate. The Independent Electricity System
Operator, the organization that manages Ontario’s power sys-
tem, says the hour of lighting we’ll save in the evenings will be
somewhat offset by additional morning power usage.
But whether we like it or not, many of the decisions and
policies made south of the border affect our lives as Canadians.
Following the U.S. lead on this issue won’t make us Americans,
but it will iron out some needless wrinkles in the work day. On
this proposal, Ontario should indeed be keeping time to the
U.S. drum.
Seaton a sign of near-sighted planning
To the editor:
I read with amusement that the Independent Electricity
System Operator is asking us to restrict power use, while at the
same time we are looking at building houses for 60,000 people
on the Seaton lands in Pickering. Am I to assume that these
houses will use electricity? Does anyone else see the disaster
we are heading for? This is just another reason (one of many)
why we shouldn’t be building a new community on Seaton.
Oh, by the way, my councillor, Maurice Brenner, has just
informed me that the Province and City wish to widen Whites
Road to accommodate cars.
So much for the environment, traffic control and energy
conservation.

U nless you spend everyday with
someone, or at least a great deal
of time with them, you can’t re-
ally know everything about them.
It’s one of the reasons idolizing sports
and entertainment stars is so danger-
ous. One minute a star is a hero, the
next they’re embroiled in controversy or
worse yet, being charged with some ter-
rible offense. You can all come up with
examples of this.
Still, there’s value in having role mod-
els. Hurdler Perdita Felicien is a great
role model to many in Ajax and Pickering
for her work ethic and never-say-die ap-
proach on the track.
A lesser-known role model in the area,
although he deserves some recognition,
is Matt Brann.
The Ajax man isn’t noticed much de-
spite how loud his profession is. A drum-
mer, he happens to be the guy that sets
the beat for many teenagers’ favourite
pop tunes in Avril Lavigne’s band.
Still, he’s earned some notoriety from
diehard Lavigne fans and since he has
some of the limelight, he’s shown he’s
more than willing to use it to do some
good.
Approached by the Durham Chapter
of the Ontario Autism Society to help
spread the word about mentally-disad-
vantaged kids, he was quick to throw his
support behind the cause. Knowing kids
who are autistic made it a natural fit, he
explains.
As a result, thousands of people at Ms.
Lavigne’s recent Toronto concert saw the
chapter’s logo on his drum set while they
sang along to her many hit songs.
It makes you wonder how many other
unsung heroes there are out there in
our community. It’s a lot of fun to go to
volunteer appreciation ceremonies held
by different charities and community
groups.
Yo u’d be amazed how many people
give their time to help others, without
asking for recognition.
Singling out Mr. Brann is only a means
to an end, though. He certainly is only
doing what he can to help because
there’s a need. He made it clear he felt he
owed it to the Autism Society to lend any
‘c elebrity’ status he has. It was a respon-
sibility he was glad to take on.
Kids all go through phases and idolize
stars at times in their lives, but you have
to look for the positives when they do. As
my daughter sings Ms. Lavigne’s hits, I’m
going to tell her about the star’s drum-
mer and the good thing he’s doing.
Maybe that will leave a lasting impres-
sion after she tires of the music and finds
a different ‘hero’ tomorrow.

Chiropractic: Helping you heal A whole body approach to total health
Chiropractic offers safe and effective health
care and is unique in its focus on the total
health of the patient. So it’s really no surprise
that according to the latest Gallup Survey, 90
per cent of all people who go to a chiropractor
say their care was effective.
Chiropractic care centres on the spinal
column and the nervous system and offers a
“whole body” approach to healing. It makes
sense once you think about it. The spinal
column houses your spinal cord and spinal
nerves branch out from between your vertebrate
to areas all over your body. A misalignment of
a vertebrate may cause a pinched or inhibited
spinal nerve that may result in headaches, lower
back pain and numerous other ailments. That’s
why spinal adjustments can help the body heal
more effectively.
By using physical examinations and X-rays
when necessary, chiropractors detect, locate
and correct spinal misalignment (also called
subluxation). Rather than treating just your
symptoms, chiropractors are trained to find the
root of the problem and correct it.
Once the problem is identified, the
solution varies. In addition to manual and
instrumental adjustments, your chiropractor
may recommend other procedures or health
regimens. Remember, chiropractic care works
with your body’s natural strengths.
Care to know more about chiropractic?
Now that you know why chiropractic is so
effective for so many people, why not make an
appointment for an initial consultation to talk
about the type of care and patient services the
office provides. Getting to know a chiropractor
could help you get the most out of your life.

Pickering Swim Club athletes, including, from left, Danielle Gomba, Kaleigh Heard, Allison Foster, Ainsley Corkum and Rebecca Ache-

City swimmer breaks meet record
Pickering Swim Club
sends nine athletes
to club nationals
PICKERING — A Pickering swim-
mer took a golden effort a step fur-
ther while competing at the 2005 Ca-
nadian Long Course Club Nationals
in Winnipeg recently.
Pickering Swim Club’s Danielle
Gomba, 12, not only swam to gold
in the girls’ 11-12 50-metre butterfly,
but also set a new meet record with
a time of 28.94 seconds. The record-
breaking time, set in a preliminary
swim, was fast enough to qualify
Gomba for the senior nationals. Her
gold-medal swim was completed in
29.47 seconds. The meet record was
also a new club record.
The PSC was represented at the
club nationals by eight other swim-
mers: Laura Nicholls, Jessica Ward,
Adam Gomba, Jeff Cernele, Rebecca
Acheson, Ainsley Corkum, Kaleigh
Heard and Allison Foster. The meet
included 109 teams from across Can-
ada, with the PSC placing 26th over-
all. In the female team scores, PSC
was 14th overall and in male scores,
the Pickering club placed 71st.
All told, PSC swimmers set 13 new
club records, led by Danielle Gomba,
who set six. In addition to her mark
in the 50m fly, she also set new stan-
dards in the 11-12 50m freestyle in
28.78, the 50m backstroke in 32.46,
the 100m back in 1:09.60, the 100m
fly in 1:06.05 and the 200m fly in
2:35.56.
Her brother, Adam, established
new club marks in the boys’ 13-14
age group in four events: 100m free
(57.40), 200m free (2:02.26), 400m
free (4:21.47) and the 200m fly
(2:20.43).
Meanwhile, Rebecca Acheson set
records in the girls’ 15-16 200m fly
(30.92) and the 100m fly (1:07.72),
which bettered the nine-year-old
mark of 1:07.92.
Jeff Cernele eclipsed a nine-year-
old club record in the boys’ 15-16
200m back, swimming in 2:27.59. The
previous mark was 2:27.77.
Rock sidelined by K-W Kodiaks in semifinal series
Better effort, but
same result for
Ajax-Pickering
DURHAM — A season of promise is
over for the Ajax-Pickering Rock.
The OLA senior ‘B’ lacrosse team was
swept out of its semifinal playoff se-
ries by the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks
at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation
Complex on Thursday night.
The Kodiaks ended the Rock’s season
with a 7-4 win to end the best-of-five
series three games to none.
Playing without sniper Jason Crosbie
and defensive specialist Dan Ladouceur
in the lineup, the Rock fell behind 2-1
after the opening frame and 5-3 after
two periods, the fifth goal coming with
a mere 1.1 seconds remaining. The Rock
weren’t able to get over the two-goal
hump in the final stanza.
Jim Veltman led the way with two
goals and an assist. Other scorers were
Mark Craig and John Veltman. Other
assists went to Jared Bilich with two, Jay
Preece and Aaron Binstock.
The Rock’s loss represented a disap-
pointing end to a season of high expec-
tations, says head coach Paul St. John.
“I’m proud of our guys. Although
Kitchener-Waterloo was a better team
than us, there’s no way they should have
beaten us three games straight,” he says.
The Rock, in its third season, brought
back legendary National Lacrosse
League player Jim Veltman, who came
off a championship year with the Toron-
to Rock. He was surrounded by fellow
pros Crosbie, Ladouceur, John Veltman
and Preece on a team that was mostly
intact from the previous season. But,
St. John pointed out candidly that the
players never came together as a team,
which hurt in the end.
“I’m not going to pull any punches.
There was a lot of turmoil, a lot of stuff
behind the scenes. This has to be cor-
rected in order for us to go forward,”
says St. John. “We’ve got to get everyone
on the same page. When you get players
who don’t buy into the team, there’s a
problem.”
St. John says there is some doubt
whether he will return for a fourth sea-
son with the Rock. St. John came on
to coach the team early in the club’s
inaugural season and has been behind
the bench ever since. That decision as
to whether or not he’ll return will ulti-
mately be made by team co-owner Rob
Roche.
“Rob has the final say; he’ll do what’s
best for the team,” says St. John.
The Rock won their opening best-of-
five playoff series against the Brooklin
Merchants three games to one.
The Kodiaks meet the winner of the
other semifinal series between the
Mohawk Stars and the Owen Sound
Woodsmen in the best-of-seven league
final. That series currently has the Stars
out in front two games to one.
