Durham Regional Police also seized $19,000 worth of drugs and a wide array of weapons, in- cluding knives and imitation guns, during Project GRACE (Gang Robbery and Community Enforce- ment), which wrapped up May 31. A team of officers worked in conjunction with uniformed cops during the effort, which targeted gangs and parole viola- tors involved in street-level rob- beries, home invasions and other criminal activity. Police arrested 136 people, laying 414 criminal charges and 50 provincial of- fences notices. Seized during the campaign were 74 grams of crack cocaine and more than 1,000 grams of marijuana, as well as metham- phetamine, psilocybin, and oxy- contin, police said. Also confiscated were imita- tion firearms, brass knuckles, and several knives. [ What’s on ] Pickering women can share a song AJAX — Start your morning with a song in your step. Heat fails to stifle Frenchman’s Bay spirit Annual Pickering festival strikes a chord with crowd By Derek Giberson Staff Writer PICKERING — It was hot fun in the summertime at Frenchman’s Bay this past weekend. Sweltering heat didn’t prevent crowds of visitors from enjoying the carnival rides, live music, games, food and more at the 14th Annual Frenchman’s Bay Festival. Kids cooled down at the splash pad, while a handful braved the waters of Lake Ontario, either un- aware or unconcerned that the Re- gion of Durham had posted health alerts for unsafe levels of bacteria in the water. The main stage featured multi- cultural music and dance groups all weekend, and even featured Frenchman’s Bay Idol on Saturday afternoon, a competition for brave young singers who dared to get on stage and sing an unaccompanied solo. Pickering resident Asha Brom- field, 10, went home the smiling winner out of seven contestants for her confident, crowd-pleasing ren- dition of Ashanti’s song, “Foolish.” Asha came to the festival with her family, but didn’t know the contest was going on. “I was at the sprinklers, and my dad came over and said, ‘Do you want to sing?’” she said after her win, holding a pair of drumsticks But more information needed before moving forward By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — A proposal to build 10 beach volley ball courts over the next two years at Diana, Princess of Wales Park has been put on hold. The partnership proposal by Team Twelve Training (T12) and PVB Canada considered by Pickering’s executive committee Monday night was referred back to staff to get more information on the project before a final decision is made. Wa rd 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner was supportive of the project in principle. “We don’t want to forget that we’ve discussed many, many times for this municipality to look at creative partner- ships with the private sector,” he said. “The dilemma the City of Pickering has presently is either we roll up the rug and say we’re not in business while we wait for development that is on hold or we look at creative partnerships.” The proposal calls for a lease agree- ment through which T12 and PVB de- velop and operate the beach volleyball facility and program for five years. The project is budgeted at just over $60,000 in the proposal, which does not men- tion any compensation for the City from leasing the land. “There is no revenue in this. Since when do we get into the business of giving up land so someone can oper- ate a business?” questioned Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson. The City doesn’t own the land, which is in the hydro corridor it leases from Hydro One. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean thought the idea was “a fantas- tic use” for the property. “Here we are taking a hydro field that is probably full of dog dung and we’re turning it into a recreation facility that will be enjoyed by adults, kids, every- Malar Annal’s project earns national silver By Mike Ruta Staff Writer AJAX — If you ask Malar Annal about her science fair project, be prepared to grab on to your ears to stop your head from spinning. After advancing to the Canada-Wide Science Fair in British Columbia, the Grade 12 student at Pickering High School picked up a silver medal in the health sciences, senior division and $3,200 in prize and scholarship money. Her project, The Detection of Mutations in Human Chromosome 8, took a solid eight months to complete, starting at the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited facil- ity in Chalk River and winding up at the Ontario Cancer Institute in Toronto. The Pickering resident eventually wants to be a player in the fight against cancer and other diseases. “I’m determining a more effective way to analyze mutations in chromosomes, and specifically chromosome 8,” she says, noting it is the biggest contributor to most cancers. “In the past, scientists have been able to determine mutations between two chromosomes, but there was no method to detect mutations in one chromosome.” After isolating and freezing white blood cells at metaphase of the cell cycle, Ms. Annal says she harvested them and put them on slides. She then attached a fluorescent molecule to a complemen- tary part of chromosome 8, a sequence of genes, that she wanted to colour. The fluoresced probe then went through polymerase chain reaction, which am- plifies DNA. Ms. Annal then combined the target cells on slides with the probe until she got a barcode, a multicolour or m-band, for the chromosome. Her innovation has major implica- tions for cancer research. “With m-banding, we can pinpoint the gene in chromosomes that cause cancer,” she says. “Then using that data, by stopping the amplification of those particular genes, that type of cancer can be cured. It takes cancer research to a much more constrained level. Now we can look at genes rather than the entire chromosome.” To top it off, Ms. Annal thought of a unique application for the barcode she created. “No one’s applied m-banding to ra- diated cells, “ she says. “I just thought I could apply this to different types of chromosomes and mutations in chro- mosomes.” The result was the ability to “pinpoint the dose of radiation that is safe for hu- mans to be exposed to,” important in case of an accidental radiation expo- sure. She wants to study biomedical science at the University of Western Ontario, and while Ms. Annal has been accepted there, she has to decide between it and going to school in Ottawa. She hopes to get into cytogenetic research and pub- lish work. Students lose their vote Holland’s bid to lower required age is defeated By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — At least they still have driving to look forward to. Sixteen-year-olds are not going to be getting the right to vote anytime soon, as Ajax-Pickering MP Mark Holland’s bill to lower the federal voting age was defeated June 8. “We got up to (support from) over 80 members and then every- thing happened with the House of Commons and the instability so we couldn’t fin- ish the tour,” he said. Mr. Holland, who introduced the private member’s bill in November, had joined forces with an MP from every party — Conservative MP Belinda Stronach, Bloc Quebecois MP Stephane Bergeron and NDP MP Nathan Cullen — until Ms. Stronach joined the Liberals last month. The four MPs travelled out West ear- lier this year to raise awareness about the bill and dialogue with young people. They were also to travel East, to Ontario and Quebec but instability in Ottawa over a confidence vote for the budget drew their attention away. In the end, Mr. Holland said about 85 members supported the bill. He said the NDP and Bloc were very supportive; the ✦ See Holland, Page A4 Mark Holland ✦ See Pickering, Page A4 A/P PAGE A2 ◆NEWS ADVERTISER ◆JUNE 15, 2005 EATERY OPEN EVERY DAY 9:00 a.m. SATURDAY 8:30 a.m. Pickering Town Centre 905-839-2507 You Can Eat For As Little As You Can At Home BREAKFAST SPECIAL (Daily) $399 LUNCHEON SPECIAL S (Daily) $799 TWO CAN DINE FO R (Daily) $1749 OPEN FATHER’S DAY $13 49 Reservations for 5 and up after 2 pm Everything on the menu 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. ™xʈ˜}Ã̜˜Ê,`°Ê °]Ê >ÃÌʜvÊ>Àܜœ`]ʍ>Ý ™äx‡{ÓȇÈnÈä >Àܜœ`ˆ˜}Ã̜˜Ê,`°2%34!52!.4s"!2 ;6I=:G¼H96 ?JC:&.I= ;6I=:G¼H96N ?JC:&.I= Àˆ˜}Ê`>`ʈ˜ÊvœÀʜÕÀÊ>Ü>À`Ê܈˜˜ˆ˜}Ê LÀi>Žv>ÃÌ]ʏ՘V…ÊœÀÊ`ˆ˜˜iÀÊ>˜`Ê̅i˜Ê ÌÀi>Ìʅˆ“Ê̜ʜÕÀÊv>“œÕà 7iʅ>Ûiʏ՘V…ÊEÊ`ˆ˜˜iÀÊëiVˆ>ÃÊiÛiÀÞ`>Þt >̅iÀ¿ÃÊ >ÞÊ-«iVˆ> vÀœ“ÊÀˆ`>ÞÊ՘iÊ£ÇÊ՘̈Ê-՘`>ÞÊ՘iÊ£™° Igni]ZhjXXjaZci»8Za^cZ¼8]dXdaViZ 8V`ZNdjl^aaXdbZWVX`[dgbdgZ iˆ˜iÊx‡>ÞiÀÊ …œVœ>ÌiÊ >Ži iˆ˜iÊx‡>ÞiÀÊ …œVœ>ÌiÊ >Ži 65 Kingston Rd. Fear ripple effect could threaten Beacon funding in Durham By Jillian Follert Staff Writer DURHAM — Local General Motors employees dodged a bullet this week, but anxiety is still high after the parent company revealed it’s cutting 25,000 jobs and closing several American plants by 2008. GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner made the announcement at an annual shareholder’s meeting in Delaware on Tuesday, with little mention of the company’s Canadian operations. However, industry experts say the magnitude of the cuts will make it difficult for Ontario’s plants and suppliers to escape unscathed. “This is a devastating thing to hear,” said Chris Buckley, president of local 222 of the Canadian Auto Workers union, which represents Oshawa’s GM em- ployees. “Right now it doesn’t look like it will affect us in Oshawa, thank God. But, until we know what facilities will be affected, we won’t be sure of the trickle-down effect here.” Calling the auto industry the “backbone of the local economy,” he said that any potential for job loss should concern all Durham residents, because of the spin-off jobs that depend on stability at GM. It is estimated that GM’s 14,000 local jobs create up to 50,000 spin-off jobs in the community. GM Canada spokeswoman Pam McLaughlin stressed that any suggestion of Canadian job cuts or plant reductions is pure speculation at this point. “Mr. Wagoner specifically referenced that the job reductions would be in the U.S.,” she said. “At this point we are not going to speculate about reduc- tions or product changes here.... We’re going to focus on things that we have control over.” She said this includes constant efforts to improve productivity and quality, adding that the company’s Oshawa plants recently won two major awards in these areas. Despite the fact that no Canadian job cuts have been announced, there has been increased specula- tion this week that the government-funded Beacon Project could be in jeopardy. The $2.5-billion initiative, announced in March, is expected to fund upgrades to Oshawa’s assembly plants among other projects. Numerous reports have indicated that GM must employ 16,000 workers in Ontario to be eligible for the funding. If a facility like the company’s strug- gling St. Catharine’s plant were to close due to cut- backs in the U.S., the total number could fall below that mark. Ms. McLaughlin said she could not confirm any details of the contact between GM and its govern- ment partners. American layoffs shock GM workers Read up at infodurhamregion.com majority of Liberal support came from newer members and the seven Conservatives were a mix of veterans and rookies. He was pleased with the support the bill did garner. “I was very encouraged,” he said. “You know that with something that is a big change there is a tremen- dous uphill battle.” The experience has been positive as the bill created dialogue and it started to ad- dress how to engage youth in the political process, he said. He added he is going to con- tinue to work on that wider issue, as well as the voting age. He introduced the bill in an effort to increase voter turnout by reinforcing a habit of political participation in young people when they are still in school and engaged in civics. As well, he pointed out the other responsibilities young people have, such as paying taxes, so they should have a say in the process. Through his visits to high schools and in talking to young people, Mr. Holland believes they are in touch with issues impacting the country. The body art, which uses the dried and ground leaves from the henna plant, originated in India, later spread to the Middle East, and is now becoming popular in North America. “It’s very safe because there are no chemicals,” explained Shailesh Garg, Mrs. Garg’s husband. He added that because they have lived in India, United Arab Emirates, and now Canada, Mrs. Garg has mastered numerous styles of the art. They kept busy all through the festival, as many people stopped to get henna tattoos under the large umbrella, in the meanwhile enjoying a few minutes out of a scorching sun. ✦ Festival-goers from page A1 Festival-goers find plenty of activity Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo John and Blake Boudreault play a midway game Sat- urday during the Frenchman’s Bay Festival. infodurhamregion.comPlease remember to recycle this newspaper By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM — The Ontario College of Teach- ers is no longer ringing alarm bells about a shortage of educators in the province’s schools. In fact, new teachers are finding it increasingly difficult to find full-time work, a process the college says takes up to three years for most. Citing data that indicate lower retirement rates and more interest in the profession, in addition to a 1,500-space per year increase in government-funded teacher training at On- tario faculties since 1998-99, the OCT says it’s fair to say the crisis it warned about in the late 1990s has been addressed. “I would agree that the job shortage doesn’t appear to be as critical as it was a few years ago,” says Sally McIlveen, the Durham District School Board’s employee relations superinten- dent. In the last year or two, when principals have posted a job at the start of the school year or second semester, she says they have received 50 or more resumes. However French positions “a re always hard to fill” and qualified teachers in areas such as mathematics and the sciences are also needed, says Ms. McIlveen. Filling those positions should become easier with the recent provincial teacher contract calling for 1,300 new elementary teachers provincewide by 2008. That deal, combined with provincial mea- sures to reduce class sizes in the primary grades, should mean roughly 70 new Durham public elementary teachers next year alone. “I think with the infusion of new teachers in elementary we will be looking for more spe- cialist teachers,” Ms. McIlveen says. At the Durham Catholic District School Board, Michael Pautler, the human resourc- es superintendent, agrees “the shortage has eased to some extent.” But he believes the col- lege jumped the gun a bit. “It seemed to me a little premature,” Mr. Pautler said. “There continues to be shortages in specialty areas.” He notes that, as has been the case for sev- eral years, finding teachers for the core French and French immersion programs remains dif- ficult, a problem not unique to the Durham Catholic board. Mr. Pautler says the board has 600 to 700 applications for teaching jobs in the coming year. “That would be consistent with what we’ve seen in the last couple of years,” he said. He added it was a little early to say how many teachers the board would be hiring. And while there are plenty of applicants, he say the board always seeks high-calibre people and to that end visited 14 faculties of education this past year to make presentations and provide infor- mation. One of the visits was to the Maritimes, a traditional source of new French teachers. EDITORIAL CLICK AND SAY This Week’s Question: In the wake of last week’s court ruling, do you think Canadians should be allowed to pur- chase private health insurance? Yes or no Cast your vote online at infodurhamregion.com Last Week’s Question: How do you feel about the new provincial smoking restrictions being introduced and tak- ing precedence over Durham’s smoking bylaw: Votes cast: 392 Unfair to smokers: 58.7% It’s great: 28.3% Should be more restrictive: 13% Court may finally bring an end to hospital w aiting times Ruling on private health-care insurance reaffirms what many already know I t may be only Quebec today, but you can be all but certain last week’s Supreme Court of Canada landmark decision will have an impact on Ontario, and the rest of Canada, tomor- row. The court decision allows those who wish to purchase private health care insurance to do so, in the event they wish to be treated in private clinics. The judges, in a 4-3 decision, decided that the government’s prohibition on private health insurance was in violation of a Quebecer’s constitutional right to security of the person, ie., the right to get medical treatment in a timely manner. How did it come to this? The answer is simple. A lack of fund- ing, primarily from the federal government, has led to waiting times that are far too long. In many cases, patients stuck on lists are the needless victims of pain and suffering; in other cases too much waiting can equal death. Should Canadians have to wait for treatment they can afford to pay for, or wish to pay special insurance coverage for? The alternative for residents in some provinces (including Quebec, Alberta and B.C.) in recent years has been to head to a private clinic for, say, an MRI or cataract surgery, and pay the full cost. Now, in Quebec at least (and inevitably elsewhere in future), clinics will be able to work through private insurers to build up a patient base and operate outside the medicare system. They’ll still, of course, be subject to the rules and regulations of the Col- lege of Physicians and Surgeons and be subject to government certification and regulation. Back when the feds shared health-care funding on a 50-50 basis with the provinces, the system worked well. But succes- sive federal governments, both Liberal and Conservative, have over the past 25 years withdrawn from their responsibilities of adequately funding the system. Now, the Liberals, under the direction of Paul Martin, are down to about 16 per cent of total funding, leaving the provinces to fend for themselves. No won- der health care is a disaster. Mr. Martin made the reduction of waiting times and health- care reform his top issue during the 2004 federal election. He promised more funding last year and delivered, but only to a limited extent. However, the court ruling simply reaffirms what many Ca- nadians have realized for some time now. We can’t afford the ever increasing price of our universal publicly-funded health system. The pressure is now on Mr. Martin to help oversee the implementation of a national parallel system of private health clinics. Change is needed to make sure Canadians get timely, high- quality health care — whether through a private or public facil- ity. The ruling recognizes this need and supports it. Don’t pass up the opportunity to learn My youngest son invit- ed me out for a bike ride the other day. And, although I had one or two “more important” things to do, I decided to drop them and take him up on his offer. I’ve learned over the years that when a kid invites you to do something you should jump at the chance. Mainly because I really be- lieve that God or the Universe or whatever it is that we come from, is talking to us through our kids all the time, shouting life instructions at us, point- ing out significant road signs, trying to get us to see what’s really important down here. Play with your kids for a while and you’ll very quickly see what I mean. Five minutes of Lego or colouring and you’ll find yourself staring down the barrel of an embarrassing life lesson or two; share your stuff, play fair and it’s no fun unless everyone takes a turn being “it.” The other reason I always try to be there when my kids ask is that someday, and that day is coming very quickly, they will stop asking. Dad, or Mom, will no longer be the focal point of their lives. This is all natural and good. And, frankly, I don’t think I want to go through the experience of having my 18-year-old ask me if I want to tag along to the “peelers.” I don’t think I’d have a good answer for that one. So, my son and I went for a bike ride. Right away I found myself on a pretty steep learn- ing curve. Virtually all of my bike rid- ing for the past 20 years, and there has been a lot of it, has been training. Clipped into my pedals with my riding shoes, I rode my bike hard. I rode to get my heart pounding, to break a sweat. No pain, no gain. I hardly ever put my feet up on the handlebars or laid rub- ber or, God forbid, went “no hands.” I had to re-learn these things. The hardest lesson, though, was that bike riding is not about finishing. It’s a bike ride, not a bike race. Kids don’t ride bikes to get fit or to test themselves or for personal bests. They’re all about the journey. Most of the time they don’t even know where they’re going. Respond to “Wanna come for a bike ride, Dad?” with “Sure. Where are we going?” and you’ll get a look like you just grew a second head. Bike riding with a kid is very Zen. There is no future or past on a kid bike ride. You’re just where you are, in the now. You’re not worried about where you’re going or where you’ve been. The last, and perhaps most important, lesson I learned that day was how important a little civil disobedience is now and then. We decided, the two of us, to ride without helmets. And you know what? We didn’t die. We didn’t even get pulled over by the cops. But we did feel that warm sum- mer breeze through our hair. And more than anything, more than the sing-song chat- ter of idle bike talk, or the laying rubber or even the no- hands, that wind through my hair was God talking to me. Neil Crone, actor-comic- writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Columnist’s name-calling is ‘stereotypical and plain wrong’ To the editor: Re: ‘With uncertainty over, let’s hope same-sex marriage bill can pass’, Carly Foster col- umn, June 5. Conservative = homopho- bic? As one in favour of preserv- ing the traditional definition of marriage as the legal union of a man and woman as hus- band and wife, I resent the comment made in this col- umn that categorized Stephen Harper’s Conservative gov- ernment as homophobic. Since when does having moral convictions and ex- pressing them qualify one for a diagnosis as abnormal and irrationally fearful? Being against the redefinition of marriage does not make one homophobic. It simply means that one has moral convic- tions for any variety of reasons that some people happen to disagree with. Name-calling, and making generalizations concerning those who hold these convic- tions is stereotypical and plain wrong. Redefining marriage is more than “giving people in love the right to make a walk down the aisle, utter sa- cred vows and party the night away.” Redefining marriage means changing the shape of the foundation over which our society is built. “A married Sandra and Jane” will have a paramount affect on our cul- ture, and the values of Con- servatives and people of a variety of religious and moral convictions. Their voices deserve to be heard without fear of being labeled homophobic and thus categorized as irrational and psychologically disturbed. Karla Belfon Ajax Don’t fall victim to identity theft To the editor: I love to recycle. My mother taught me well and I aspire to be one of the best private recyclers in all of Durham. Usually I wait until morn- ing to place my considerable quantity of recycling out but recently I put it all out at the curb in the evening. At 7 a.m. Thursday morn- ing, as I was putting out my garbage, the recycling truck was just starting to collect on our street. I noticed that our boxes from the night before had been disturbed. All boxes were there, as were the contents, except for the contents of our paper box. The paper was gone. I checked out my neighbour’s box across the street. His paper box was emptied as well. I notified all of my neigh- bours on the street by flyer, for this theft could be the work of paper or used-book salvagers but it could be the work of ‘Dumpster Divers’. Dumpster Divers are noto- rious thieves who steal our paper for the sensitive mate- rial it may contain — cop- ies of any kind of financial statement, credit card and In- terac receipts, solicitations for credit cards, etc. These thieves use this mate- rial to steal our identities and the effects can be devastating. It can cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair credit rat- ings. Please beware. Please shred (cross-cut shredders are the best) or otherwise dispose of your sensitive materials. Wait until the morning of your recycling pickup to put out papers. Don’t be the victim of iden- tity theft — the fastest ris- ing crime in North America today. All residents in Durham need to be aware and take the proper precautions. Be safe. Beverly A. Durham fraud cops bust card-skimming operations By Jeff Mitchell Staff Writer DURHAM — Durham Regional Police fraud investigators have notched two major busts of card-skimming opera- tions. In both cases it appears equipment had been installed at retail outlets, al- lowing thieves to gather data from cus- tomers’ bank cards, police said. The data was used to make fraudulent cards and withdraw money from victims’ ac- counts. • On May 30, Durham cops arrest- ed a Toronto man who is accused of fraudulently accessing bank accounts throughout the GTA by using a phoney card. When he was busted, the man had in his possession equipment capable of capturing debit card data and personal identification numbers (PINs), police said. Navaneeth Ponnambalam, 22, of Ben- light Crescent in Scarborough is charged with fraud under $5,000; breach of un- dertaking, and charges relating to fraud- ulent use of bank cards. • In an unrelated case, Durham fraud investigators busted three men who they say used manufactured debit cards to steal about $195,000 from four banks. Police believe data-gathering equip- ment was installed in a Lindsay gas sta- tion in the fall of 2004 and was used in the manufacture of counterfeit cards, gaining the thieves access to a number of accounts. Charged with fraud over $5,000, con- spiracy to commit fraud and other of- fences are: Pratheepan Thambu, 19, of To ronto, Arivinthan Ratnasingam, 23, of Markham, and 25-year-old Rajbavan Ra- jkumar of Scarborough. [ Synchronized swimming ] Durham synchro club turns in top-10 performances DURHAM — The Durham Synchro Club competitive team wrapped up its 2004/2005 season with impressive results at provincial and national cham- pionships in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario. Earlier in June, the club’s Tier 6 team, which consists of Katie LePage, Brianna MacLellan, Allie Mear, Carrie Mouck, and Julia Maclean of Ajax and Pickering’s Alai- na Wade, competed at the 2005 Canadian Espoir Championships in Saskatoon. The team placed fourth, missing the bronze by one-tenth of a point. For the Tier 6 15-and-under duet, LePage and MacLellan finished sixth, and Mouck and Maclean were seventh. In solo, Maclean was ninth. In late May, the team participated at the 2005 Ontario Tier Championships in Wa t erloo, represented by Durham’s mas- ters team and the Tier 1, 3 and 4 rosters. The Masters team brought home the gold. In Tier 4 duet, Christina Bell and Christa Hutton placed fifth. Spartans must beat St. Mary’s of Hamilton to stay in Prentice hunt By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — The Dunbarton High School Spartans hope their undefeat- ed provincial title run continues at the Rogers Centre in Toronto today (Wednesday). The Spartans take the field at 11:30 a.m. for a Prentice Cup quarter-final match against St. Mary’s Catholic Sec- ondary School Crusaders from Ham- ilton. Spartans’ coach Brad Reeson says although the Crusaders weren’t picked to emerge from their four-team pool at the Prentice Cup regionals in Barrie last week, they rose to the challenge. Suffice it to say, the Spartans aren’t taking them for granted. “I didn’t see a lot of them but, ob- viously, they won all three of their games and beat some good teams. They weren’t favoured to win their pool, but they did. It will be whoever plays the best and makes the least mistakes, so we can’t take these guys lightly,” says Reeson. A victory over St. Mary’s will put the Spartans into Thursday’s semifinal, also at the Rogers Centre, at 9 a.m., versus Lorne Park of Mississauga. The other semifinal, to be played Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Rogers Cen- tre, features Gonzaga of Mississauga against the winner of the Notre Dame (Burlington) and Loyola (Mississau- ga) quarter-final. The Prentice Cup championship is at the Rogers Centre Thursday at 3 p.m. The Spartans advanced to the championship round by going un- defeated and winning their pool at the Barrie regional last week. Dun- barton started with a 6-1 victory over Lambton Centre school of Petrolia. Ryan Cameron earned the win on the mound. In Game 2, the Spartans lowered the boom on Barton from Hamilton 10-0. Steve Loder pitched the shut- out. Dunbarton finished pool play with a 5-2 victory over Innisdale of Barrie, which also entered the crucial third game with a perfect 2-0 record. Cedric Schell earned the win. Reeson says the Spartans’ defence and its pitching rose to the occasion at the regionals. He was, however, a little less than satisfied with the offensive output by his charges. “The defence and pitching were re- ally good in all three games. The bats were good at times, but they were in- consistent at times, too,” says Reeson. While the Spartans enter the quar- ter-final game with a roster that’s deep in veteran players, Reeson says it will ultimately be the intangibles that determine who gets to move on in the Prentice Cup playdown, symbolic of Ontario varsity high school baseball supremacy, and who goes home. “All six teams have the same men- tality going in,” he says. “They’re all confident, so it may come down to the little things in baseball.” Dunbarton plays Cup quarter-finals today Brandon Robinson wins synchronized trampoline at Eastern Canadians PICKERING — Pickering Aerials’ ath- letes soared to solid results at the East- ern Canadian Tumbling and Trampoline Championships in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia recently. Brandon Robinson proved to be the big winner. After coming sixth overall in the individual final, Robinson advanced to compete in the synchronized trampoline event with a Mississauga athlete. There, the duo finished with a gold medal. Meanwhile, Kelsey McMaster and Ka- rissa Foote competed in the tumbling events. McMaster placed sixth in the fi- nals, while Foote earned a 14th-place finish out of 29 athletes in her category. Aerial soars to gold at big meet Under-12 rep soccer squad edges host team in tournament final PICKERING — The Pickering Power girls’ ‘A’ under-12 rep soccer team dominated the Barrie Spiritfest 2005 Soccer Tournament from beginning to end to bring back the championship recently. The Power won all five games, out- scoring the opposition 10-1. In the final played under hot and humid conditions against the host Bar- rie team, Pickering waged a spirited battle. Each team was playing their third game of the day. In the end, the Power needed a goal by Tavia Anderson to secure the championship. The semifinal game pitted Pickering against the Brantford Blaze, with the Power posting a 2–1 win. Haley Henderson opened the scor- ing with a beautifully placed ball from 20 yards out. Chrysalene Teo netted the winner by burying a rebound late in the second half. Pickering started the tournament by winning both games on Day 1, identi- cal 2-0 scores against the Brantford Blaze and Brams United. Goal scorers in the first game were Bianca Munch on a pinpoint free kick from the right sideline of the field and Teo who capi- talized on a rebound. Game 2 scorers were Anderson on a break down the right side and Sonia Belley on a well-placed chip over the attacking goalkeeper. Pickering rounded out qualifying play on Day 2 by posting a convincing 3-0 win over Barrie. Striker Ander- son scored twice, while striker Belley notched the other. The stingy Power defence was basi- cally impenetrable throughout the tournament and provided a quiet time for goalkeeper Sarah Forde. The strikers continually provided fast runs and relentless pressure on the opposing defenders. Other Pickering Power team mem- bers are Taylor Warrington, Katrina Jegg, Connie Cancellara, Kelly Bishop, Nicole Mayers, Dana Murphy, Linzee Exner, Madison Marmina, and Ashley Tait. Bert Laing coaches the team, as- sisted by Bruce Bishop. The trainer is Theresa Henderson and the manager is Nina Cancellara. Photography on display this month at Ajax’s McLean centre By David Stell News Editor DURHAM — Having visited a num- ber of places around the world, Harper Forbes is sharing what he’s seen. His photography features people, places and things, he says, and spans several countries, including Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, England and France. That’s where the title of the Ajax exhibit, ‘World Tour 2005,’ comes from. There are 26 images — black and white, and colour. “It’s a well-rounded collection featur- ing many different things,” Forbes says. “It gives a feeling of how varied photog- raphy can be.” The Claremont resident’s McLean centre exhibit started in late May and continues until July 4. His day job is in the film industry as a technical expert in lighting and camera work. In an inter- view from Dundas, where he is working on a film project chronicling Terry Fox’s famous Marathon of Hope, he explained his style of photography and what it means. “I have a real eye for the visual,” Forbes says. “To me, the subject matter is the most important thing.” For anyone checking out his show, he says, “ideally people will come away with a feeling or attachment to the im- ages.” Pointing to some of his images from Trinidad and Tobago, he explains the atmosphere is so different than life in Canada. “A lot of the areas, it was like stepping back 50 years,” he says. “It was a time warp.” His experience is varied in different parts of the world when it comes to tak- ing photographs and the conditions he finds. “The thing about England is the qual- ity of soft light,” he says. “It’s very good.” On the other hand, Cuba featured harsh sunlight, but he described it as having a real warm quality, which brought out the texture in the objects and the background of his work. A member of the PineRidge Arts Council, Oshawa Arts Association and Visual Arts Ontario, he has exhibited his photography several times and in juried art shows. He works with 35mm film, but says he’s considering a transition to digital imagery. Beyond the camera, he also creates art in painting, silkscreen and steel sculptures. His show is at the McLean Community Centre, 95 Magill Dr., and is open to the public Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday it’s open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free. A Settlement Capacity Study has been submitted by Berrywoods Farm Inc. as required by the Region of Durham Offi cial Plan. In order to obtain the necessary approvals to expand this hamlet, the applicant proposes to conduct the Greenwood Hamlet Servicing & Westney Road Re-alignment Study. The Greenwood Hamlet & Westney Road Re-alignment Study will address the following three components needed for the expansion: • Proposed Berrywoods Farm plan of subdivision; • Proposed Westney Road Re-alignment; and, • Proposed new wastewater system. Planning Act and Class Environmental Assessment The landowners will use the “integrated approach” set out in Section A.2.9 of the Class Environmental Assessment for Municipal Projects. This study will address the Planning Act approvals and the Schedule C Class Environmental Assessment requirements for the road and wastewater projects together. In accordance with the integrated approach, once the landowner has satisfi ed Section A.2.9 of the Class Environmental Assessment, the Planning Act approval of the subdivision will constitute the fulfi llment of the require- ments of the Class Environmental Assessment for the specifi ed wastewater and road projects.
