PICKERING — Several people
recently came out to show their
support for a new Pickering ad-
visory committee that they say
makes life easier for 125 “hard-
working” people and their fami-
lies.
Council passed a motion May
2 creating an advisory committee
to review the taxicab bylaw and
other issues that might be brought
to the committee’s attention. It
was created in response to mem-
bers of the industry wanting open
communication with members of
council and City staff.
“My issue regarding the com-
mittee is all the taxi industry has
been going through trouble, with
this committee at least the prob-
lems that arise in the future we can
have the questions answered,” said
Surinder Kumar, who has been
driving a taxi in Pickering for 12
years. “We would like to bring this
committee into effect because it
can help us in the future if we have
any problems. If we have a prob-
lem with a plate, with the public,
this committee can help.”
He said there are at least 125
drivers in the city but that this
committee isn’t just for them.
“It is (for the) 125 families we are
feeding,” Mr. Kumar said. “They
are not a burden on the city, they
are hard-working people and they
need your support.”
Kewal Manocha has been driv-
ing a cab in Pickering for 10 years.
“The taxi drivers should be con-
sidered one of the best citizens
because he goes through a medi-
cal check and other checks before
becoming a taxi driver,” he said,

revenue.
The coffee shop it has oper-
ated in the Rouge Valley Health
System’s Ajax location for 35 years
is coming to a close at the end of
July — a decision made by the
hospital.
“We’re very upset about it,” said
Ella Joel, the auxiliary’s president.
“We don’t really understand it.”

Mr. Manocha stressed
how needed the committee
is.
“We are going through
a very tough time... most
of the drivers are getting
assaultive behaviour from
dispatchers, owners and
managers,” he said. “We
need this advisory commit-
tee in Pickering to protect
taxi drivers and the pub-
lic.”
Council’s support was
stronger than
ever after hearing
from the guests.
“There is no
question after
hearing from
our speakers to-
night the need
for this commit-
tee to be struck
as soon as pos-
sible,” said Ward
1 Regional Councillor
Maurice Brenner. “These
individuals have been the
victims of abuse,
exploitation and
they have not had
regular commu-
nication with the
municipality that
regulates this in-
dustry.”
He brought for-
ward the motion
for the commit-
tee, which is simi-
lar to those in other mu-
nicipalities.
It is to be comprised
of two drivers, two taxi-
cab owners, two business
owners, one member of
the industry at large, two
members of council, one
member of the community
at large, and staff from the
clerk’s and bylaw divisions.
Coun. Brenner and
Wa rd 2 Regional Councillor
Bill McLean were chosen as
the council representatives.
“This committee will
provide a funnel of vent-
ing to allow the industry to
organize themselves to be
able to speak openly with-
out fear of reprisal,” Coun.
Brenner said.
Coun. McLean said the
committee was necessary.
“It’s something that we as
a committee can do to pro-
tect the rights of the drivers,
the community at large, the
owners and the industry,”
he said. “There is no tough-
er job that I can imagine
than a cab driver.”
The motion passed
unanimously.
