Council passed a motion May 2 creating an advisory committee to review the taxicab bylaw and other issues that might be brought to the committee’s attention. It was created in response to mem- bers of the industry wanting open communication with members of council and City staff. “My issue regarding the com- mittee is all the taxi industry has been going through trouble, with this committee at least the prob- lems that arise in the future we can have the questions answered,” said Surinder Kumar, who has been driving a taxi in Pickering for 12 years. “We would like to bring this committee into effect because it can help us in the future if we have any problems. If we have a prob- lem with a plate, with the public, this committee can help.” He said there are at least 125 drivers in the city but that this committee isn’t just for them. “It is (for the) 125 families we are feeding,” Mr. Kumar said. “They are not a burden on the city, they are hard-working people and they need your support.” Kewal Manocha has been driv- ing a cab in Pickering for 10 years. “The taxi drivers should be con- sidered one of the best citizens because he goes through a medi- cal check and other checks before becoming a taxi driver,” he said, adding the mayor and councillors Pickering hails its new taxi committee Redevelopment leaves auxiliary shop off plans By Danielle Milley Staff Writer DURHAM — The Ajax and Pick- ering hospital auxiliary is losing a major source of its fundraising revenue. The coffee shop it has oper- ated in the Rouge Valley Health System’s Ajax location for 35 years is coming to a close at the end of July — a decision made by the hospital. “We’re very upset about it,” said Ella Joel, the auxiliary’s president. “We don’t really understand it.” Hospital spokeswoman Katie Cronin-Wood explained there are NEW WHITBY CAMPUS OPEN HOUSE www.blaisdale.com 12 mths - grade 8 5 Campuses in Durham Call Head Office 905-509-5005 Blaisdale MONTESSORI School SPACES AVAILABLE IN AJAX & PICKERING PRE-TODDLER PROGRAM (12 mo.-18 mo.) Mr. Manocha stressed how needed the committee is. “We are going through a very tough time... most of the drivers are getting assaultive behaviour from dispatchers, owners and managers,” he said. “We need this advisory commit- tee in Pickering to protect taxi drivers and the pub- lic.” Council’s support was stronger than ever after hearing from the guests. “There is no question after hearing from our speakers to- night the need for this commit- tee to be struck as soon as pos- sible,” said Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner. “These individuals have been the victims of abuse, exploitation and they have not had regular commu- nication with the municipality that regulates this in- dustry.” He brought for- ward the motion for the commit- tee, which is simi- lar to those in other mu- nicipalities. It is to be comprised of two drivers, two taxi- cab owners, two business owners, one member of the industry at large, two members of council, one member of the community at large, and staff from the clerk’s and bylaw divisions. Coun. Brenner and Wa rd 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean were chosen as the council representatives. “This committee will provide a funnel of vent- ing to allow the industry to organize themselves to be able to speak openly with- out fear of reprisal,” Coun. Brenner said. Coun. McLean said the committee was necessary. “It’s something that we as a committee can do to pro- tect the rights of the drivers, the community at large, the owners and the industry,” he said. “There is no tough- er job that I can imagine than a cab driver.” The motion passed unanimously. The Durham Region health department is offer- ing online reporting as West Nile Virus surveillance sea- son starts. As of May 9, resi- dents can log on to www. region.durham.on.ca and report dead birds. The Region’s focus is again on crows, blue jays and raptors such as eagles, hawks and owls. Gap between rest of province pegged at $544 million By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — The resi- dents of Durham and the rest of the 905 area are not getting their fair share when it comes to health care fund- ing, according to an alliance of 10 hospitals. The GTA/905 Health- care Alliance report, ‘The State of Hospital Care in the GTA/905’, calls for fair funding for those hospitals. Released earlier this month, the report pegs the gap be- tween hospital funding in the area and the rest of Ontario at $544 million and growing. “As the alliance has made clear on numerous oc- casions, we do not receive a fair share of funding for our local hos- pitals,” said Tariq Asmi, executive director of the association. Recently, Mr. Asmi made a presentation at Pickering’s management forum meet- ing and asking for council’s support. “We hope you will con- tinue to add your voice to the call for fair funding,” he said. “The more resolu- tions we can have passed, the stron- ger our voice.” Durham’s per- capita funding in 2002-03 was $527, compared with the provincial av- erage of $704. The number was $492 for all of the 905. The provincial average ex- cludes Toronto and north- ern Ontario as those areas cost more to service. If the funding in Dur- ham were increased to the provincial average it would mean an extra $86.6 million for hospitals here. Hume Martin, the Rouge Valley Health System chief execu- tive officer, said that would ease their funding struggles, adding 905 hospitals should get more than the provin- cial average. He explained hospital budgets are based on his- torical data, which has left booming areas such as Durham and the 905 under- funded. “Hospital budgets in high-growth areas are far below budgets in commu- nities that are growing less quickly,” Mr. Martin said. More than three million people live in the GTA, which represents 25 per cent of Ontario’s residents, and that number is growing. Many of those people have to leave their community to get health care because the services are not available at home due to lack of fund- ing, the report says. This costs the health- care system more as it costs less, on average, to treat each case at a 905 hospi- tal ($3,391) compared to To ronto teaching hospitals ($4,860) and all Toronto hospitals ($4,187). Those figures are for treating a standardized patient, re- gardless of the complexity of the procedure and the patient’s characteristics. “You wonder why we have backups and delays in our emergency depart- ments, we just don’t have the room,” Mr. Asmi said. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, MAY 15, 2005 PAGE 3 A/P Brock North Dental OPEN EVENINGS & SATURDAY CONTACT US AT 905-427-7773 •DIGITAL X-RAY • INTRA ORAL CAMERA • TV IN OPERATORIES • KIDS PLAY STATION 2 • DIRECT BILLING TO INSURANCE ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS AND EMERGENCIES 2200 Brock Road in the Brock North Plaz a Angela, Michelle, Darlene, Dr. Pacione, Donna, Michele, Robbin, Angie, Lisa, Jill, Vanda, Dr. Fernandes Dr. Rony Dagher (Endodontist) Ashley, Kristine, Karen, Anna, Marie, Brenda Orthodontist and Denture therapist onsite, Dr. Peter Sbaraglia (Anesthesiologist) Ope n A pr i l th ro u gh De c e m be r - D aily 8 am - 8 p m Open April through December - Daily 8am - 8pm Directions: from 401 at Newcastle, take Mill St. exit and go North. A Settlement Capacity Study has been submitted by Berrywoods Farm Inc. as required by the Region of Durham Offi cial Plan. In order to obtain the necessary approvals to expand this hamlet, the applicant proposes to conduct the Greenwood Hamlet Servicing & Westney Road Re-alignment Study. The Greenwood Hamlet & Westney Road Re-alignment Study will address the following three components needed for the expansion: • Proposed Berrywoods Farm plan of subdivision; • Proposed Westney Road Re-alignment; and, • Proposed new wastewater system (including treatment, outfall and full collection system). Planning Act and Class Environmental Assessment The landowners will use the “integrated approach” set out in Section A.2.9 of the Class Environmental Assessment for Municipal Projects. This study will address the Planning Act approvals and the Schedule C Class Environmental Assessment requirements for the road and wastewater projects together. In accordance with the integrated approach, once the landowner has satisfi ed Section A.2.9 of the Class Environmental Assessment, the Planning Act approval of the subdivision will constitute the fulfi llment of the requirements of the Class Environmental Assessment for the specifi ed wastewater and road projects. Possible methods of implementing the proposed projects will be evaluated based on the effects on the following: • Engineering and Public Safety • Natural Environment • Social/Cultural Environment • Economic Environment Public Consultation Public input during the planning process of this project is encouraged. Three Public Information Centres will be scheduled over the next year. These meetings will provide additional information and answer your questions regarding the project prior to completion of the study and the selection of a preferred solution. Comments or Questions? In an effort to deal with its funding problems, Rouge Valley has cut in half its $350,000 food service subsidy (across both sites), prompting it to change the way it offers retail food services, she said. In addition, as the Ajax site heads into its redevelopment plans, the existing cafeteria is going to be closed as it becomes part of the new ambulatory care unit. These two factors prompted the hospital to decide to open a new food service kiosk, which will feature Tim Hortons prod- ucts, pizza, soup and cereal — a wider variety than available at the auxiliary coffee shop. Once the redevelopment is complete, the kiosk is to be expanded into the new cafeteria. Ms. Joel said the coffee shop is a big source of fundraising, bring- ing in $100,000 a year. Of that, $50,000 to $60,000 goes to the hospital. “It certainly puts a big dent in our fundraising effort,” she said. The auxiliary has donated more than $4 million to the hospital over the years Ms. Cronin-Wood said the aux- iliary’s coffee shop would have had to close during construction anyway. It can’t reopen once the rede- velopment is complete because there was never space set aside for it and it “would put them in direct competition” with the new kiosk, she said. “We think this is a better way to deliver retail food services to staff, physicians and visitors,” Ms. Cro- nin-Wood said, adding it is able to offer Tim Hortons and other brand name prod- ucts through licensing agreements. S he adds projections show the new kiosk will bring in revenues similar to the auxiliary’s coffee shop. She added auxiliary members were one of the user groups in- volved with the design of the building and knew there wasn’t going to be a new coffee shop in the redeveloped hospital, al- though the official word wasn’t given until early spring. Ms. Joel said she was told of the decision April 6 in one of her regular meetings with chief ex- ecutive officer Hume Martin. “They just told me the proposal would be presented to the board to have the (new) coffee shop come in,” she said. The auxiliary doesn’t know how it is going to replace the lost revenue and Ms. Joel thinks the change could result in the loss of volunteers. “People in the com- munity should be aware it is a done deal... I find it very frustrat- ing,” she said. Ms. Cronin-Wood hopes the move won’t hurt the hospital’s relationship with the auxiliary. “The auxiliary has done an out- standing job in supporting the hospital,” she said. “They have hundreds of adult and student volunteers that help the hospital, I would hope this is not going to damage the relationship.” Move ‘puts a big dent’ in fundraising, auxiliary says Katie Cronin-Wood ✦ Move, From Page 1 Practise your French this summer Student exchange program available By Danielle Milley Staff Writer DURHAM — Students in Ajax and Pickering have a unique opportu- nity to practise their French while living in another part of Canada. Participants travel to a Francophone communi- ty in either Quebec or New Bruns- wick for six weeks in July and Au- gust where they live with another participant’s family. They work full- time at a non-profit organization. “They most likely will be working at a day camp, or a library or muse- um,” said Lindsey Watson, the local co-ordinator, adding they are paid the provincial minimum wage. This is the 10th year for SWSE, which has grown from 40 partici- pants to 1,200 across the country. The program is open to 16- and 17-year-olds whose parents are willing to serve as hosts to anoth- er participant. For those students whose families don’t want to serve as hosts the program can try to ac- commodate them. “The benefits of the program are you develop your second language skills, you gain experience in a dif- ferent community, the work experi- ence and you get to meet a whole lot of people,” she said. The program is administered by the Canadian Unity Council. There is no cost to participants and trans- portation is provided by Via Rail Canada. The program is funded by the Department of Canadian Heri- tage through Exchanges Canada. The deadline to apply is May 20. Not to make light of what is a serious concern for Ajax and Pickering’s hospital, but this sounds all too familiar as the public must once again pace the floor waiting for news of its hospital’s maternity ward. Ultimately, it’s in no way Rouge Valley Health System’s fault that it is up against a shortage of pediatricians. How- ever, by all means officials have been made aware of the af- fection and ownership these two communities have for the obstetrics department and the hospital as a whole. And to that end, they know residents want stability there. So, based on the response of local doctors to the situation, with unequivocal support for keeping at least some level of maternity care open, Rouge Valley has no choice but to make it happen. Even if that means only low-risk deliveries performed here, then so be it. To even temporarily close the ward opens the door to the possibility of a day when the hospital closes its doors to childbirth all together. And that’s a situation the public would certainly rail against. At a time when the community is rallying around an ex- pansion-fundraising campaign for improved emergency ser- vices, Rouge Valley must not lose sight of what is historically an integral part of Ajax and Pickering hospital’s services. A telling comment from Dr. Henry Huang could be used as a key plank in building a solution, even if it is temporary. The president of the Rouge Valley Medical Staff Society and a member of the hospital’s board of directors says the Ajax hospital has helped the Centenary site in the past with phy- sicians relocating there. It’s time, Dr. Huang adds, for Cente- nary to return the favour. On the other hand, the hospital’s CEO says Rouge Valley doesn’t have money in the budget to pay doctors. But they have had to do so in the past in order to keep it open, so they will have to continue doing so until pediatricians are recruited to solve the problem. Rouge Valley finds itself in a difficult situation, one not of its making, but it must keep this essential service open, even in a limited capacity. Rouge Valley can count on public sup- port now and in the long-term if it does so. Coffee to go a big disappointment To the editor: I am a longtime resident of Ajax and unfortunately have also been a patient several times at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. During these visits, either as a patient or as a visitor, I have always been impressed by the volunteers and their compas- sion and caring. I know that the volunteers donate not only their time but also raise a great deal of revenue for the hospital. I now under- stand that one of their sources of revenue is being taken away from them, namely their coffee shop. The shop has been a fix- ture of the hospital for many years and is going to be replaced by Tim Hortons. How many outlets does Tim Hortons need in Ajax? And do we really need one in our hospital. I think that the community should rally behind the auxil- iary because if you look on the donor board in the hospital you will see that the auxiliary is the number-one contributor. Insist that the administration of the hospital allow the auxil- iary to keep its coffee shop. We are losing services and staff at the hospital, do we also need to lose this as well? EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com Province should be held accountable for its role in this costly mess I n a strange twist of ironic fate, it now looks as if some regional staff will be homeless by 2007. The new regional headquarters will be at maximum capacity less than three years after staff and councillors move in. Is it bad karma that just a few short weeks after regional council refused to give our shelters more money, they’re now facing a housing crisis of their own? Maybe, instead of spending a few million dollars to put an addition on the cramped regional headquarters, we should let staff take over the beauti- ful rotund council chambers and hold meetings at the Cornerstone men’s hos- tel or the YWCA. It’s disheartening to hear whispers that people at the Province and other municipalities are laughing at the Re- gion and its headquarters mess. The new building, so striking, with different textures and angles of glass and con- crete, is supposed to be a showpiece for our regional government. Instead, because the Province contin- ues to dangle a new courthouse in front of Durham residents, they have forced the Region into a concrete jungle at 605 Rossland Rd. The mammoth original regional headquarters sits as a mockery, as Provincial court employees scurry in and completely take over. What a kick in the face it would be if the rumours turned out to be true, and the cash-strapped provincial gov- ernment swooped in, expropriated the land the big white palace sits on, and announced it would be the Durham courthouse. Ajax Regional Councillor Scott Craw- ford is right when he says the building and its add-ons get thrown in his face. As the front-line people, councillors have the unfortunate job of having to answer for the facility, when it’s blatant- ly obvious the fiasco is the Province’s fault. But in the end, it’s Durham taxpayers — including regional staff and the elect- ed officials — who will bear the brunt of it all. Whether it’s the paving over of trees and parkettes on the site itself, or the money we’ll have to fork out as both regional and Provincial taxpayers, we all lose. Staff writer Carly Foster’s column appears every third Sunday. E-mail cfoster@durhamregion.com. With its natural pleasures and range of benefits, walking occupies a special place in the world of healthy living. Thirty minutes of walking each day can help maintain flexibility, increase mobility and build strength and endurance. Almost anyone can participate at any skill level – from seniors to kids. It’s easy, convenient and inexpensive – all one needs is a good pair of shoes. “Canadians of any age and weight can use walking as a great way to keep active and healthy,” remarksYvonne Chan, a physiotherapist and area manager for LifeMark Health in eastern Ontario. “The simple act of walking can play an important role in keeping you feeling good. Walking helps with mobility in your joints, stimulates muscles, pumps blood through your heart and lungs, and it can help you to lose body fat by burning off calories. It can be a walk around the neighbourhood or as simple as finding a parking spot further away from the door. Start small and grow into it. It’s easy to make walking a part of your everyday life. You just need to find your own fun way to do it.” Canadian physiotherapists suggest, before starting any walking or recreational program, to ease into the activity to avoid undue stress to the muscles and joints. During the first week, walk 10 to 15 minutes at a slow pace, on a flat surface – avoiding hills and stairs. After week one, maintain the same distance but pick up the pace. Over the next several weeks, build up gradually to a 20 to 30 minute walk, three to four times per week, at a pace that is brisk but comfortable. The Canadian Physiotherapy A ssociation suggests the following five S .M.A.R.T. Walking tips: Stretch, Move, Add it up, Reduce strain, Talk to a physiotherapist. STRETCH A warm up and cool down is vital to every walking program. Keep muscles flexible and relaxed, joints mobile, and relieve tension and strain by doing a few gentle stretches before and after your walk. Important areas to stretch are the neck, shoulders, arms, low back and spine, hip flexors, buttocks, quads, hamstrings, shins, calves and ankles. Stretch until you feel tension but not pain. Do not bounce as this can tear the muscle fibres. MOVE TODAY FOR TOMORROW Walking is one of the healthiest activities to help gain and maintain physical mobility. The body was designed with balance in mind and if you somehow walk out of balance, you are placing added stress on the parts of your body that have to compensate in order to keep you upright. With good posture you will be able to breathe easier and avoid back pain. Use the following tips to keep your body in line and add more power to your step. • Focus on keeping your shoulders square and relaxed. • Focus on achieving an efficient stride; not too long, not too short. • Find and maintain a consistent, comfortable pace. • Maintain a tall erect posture, keeping your torso upright. • Focus on keeping your breathing relaxed. • Think about arm swing, driving your arms backwards, not just forwards. • Stay relaxed and keep shoulders loose. • Foot strike is key; pay attention to actively pushing off, rolling from the heel right through and off the end of the toe. • Focus on pointing your feet straight ahead. We are currently living in an information age and the internet has turned everyone’s home into libraries filled with volumes of information. Some of the websites are factual and set up for the lay- person, however, some are so detailed, they only confuse the internet user. W hen surfing the net, try to be specific, to avoid being inundated with hundreds of web pages . For example, never just search the word “foot” as this is far too broad a topic. You can begin your search with the Ontario Podiatry Association Website. The internet allows you to search for a podiatrist in your area, look up specific problems (arthritis.ca) and their treatments, or it may help you develop a training program. For simple problems, the internet can be beneficial. In some cases this may resolve the problem without the need for professional help. Care should always be taken when treating yourself, a simple problem may turn into a larger, more extensive one that will require professional help. The laws are vague governing any standard of medical accuracy or its content. Be wary of promises and quick fixes that are being sold on the internet. Never buy prescription drugs on the net. You, as a layperson are not aware of the possible drug interactions with any other medications you may be on. Whatever the advantages of the internet are, the negatives are just as great. Plenty of activity and events to plan for in Ajax and Pickering By Jason Chamberlain Special to the News Advertiser DURHAM — As the school year winds down and the weather gets warmer, families in Ajax and Pick- ering are turning their thoughts to summer. And there’s no shortage of sum- mer activities available in the area, both entertaining and cost-friendly ways for families to spend time to- gether. The Ajax Public Library has spe- cial programs lined up for parents looking to introduce their children to the world of literature over the summer months. Kids can join the TD Summer Reading Club by pick- ing up a free summer reading club kit at the library’s main branch (55 Harwood Ave. S.) on June 29. “They get a poster, a booklet and stickers, and they get more stickers as they read,” said Cindy Kimber, community relations co-ordinator at the library. The club also includes activity days for kids and their parents from July 4 to Aug. 25 at all three branch- es. The sessions are held at the main branch Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., at the village branch (58 Church St. N.) on Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m., and at the McLean branch (95 Magill Dr.) on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. “They’ll do activities and crafts and share stories,” said Ms. Kimber. The library is planning a ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ book launch party Saturday, July 16 at 10 a.m. “The first 50 children on the hold list will get to borrow the book,” said Ms. Kimber. The day will also include a special segment called Potions 101, where kids will explore the science behind the spells and potions that Harry learns. Parents might also be interested in taking their children to meet Ca- nadian children’s author Richard Scrimger (‘The Boy From Earth,’ ‘The Nose From Jupiter’) when he visits the main branch July 12 at 10:30 a.m. Fa mily activities are also available at the Pickering Museum Village in Greenwood. Parents can bring their children to the Kids in the Village summer craft program, running We dnesdays and Fridays each week in July and August. The program in- cludes a crafts period as well as the pioneer games played by children centuries ago. The program costs $3 per child, and $4 per adult. The museum also runs three dif- ferent summer drop-off camps, in- cluding a pioneer camp where kids go on hikes and learn how to survive in the wilderness. Families can also purchase a yearly pass to the mu- seum for $45 to take full advantage the programs. “History can be so much fun,” said Katrina Pyke, volunteer and program co-ordinator at the mu- seum. “We’re famous for bringing it to life, and we offer as many experi- ences as possible.” For more information call 905- 683-8401. Heading further south, the 2005 Frenchman’s Bay Festival is at Mil- lennium Square on Liverpool Road. The carnival begins Friday, June 10, and there’s a weekend full of events. Activities include a colouring con- test and beach volleyball, as well as a variety of stage entertainment. More information is available at www.frenchmansbayfestival.com. Beginning the same weekend in Ajax is the 35th Annual Ajax Home Week festivities. A parade Saturday, June 11 kicks off an extensive list of activities, which all wraps up Sunday, June 19 with fireworks at dusk as part of a day-long waterfront festival. Family summer fun choices don’t end there. Consider a visit to the Petticoat Creek Conservation Area, 1100 Whites Rd. Open during June, July and August, it offers plenty of space for family picnics, as well as a large pool. Parking is $10. In Pickering Village, it’ll be a day of music Saturday, June 25 with the return of the annual jazz festival. “It’s going to be fun, with lots of music and good food,” said June Timmons, an event volunteer. It takes place at Old Kingston Road from noon until midnight, and features a number of bands includ- ing popular acts Ragweed and Hot Air. Elsewhere in Ajax, residents can celebrate Canada and the 50th an- niversary of the town on July 1 dur- ing Canada Day festivities at Rotary Park. Activities include face paint- ing, carnival games, and a petting zoo. “It’s a chance to celebrate our country’s birthday, our past and our future,” said Lisa Warth, community recreation co-ordinator. “It’s a great family day.” These are only a few of the many events that families can enjoy in Ajax and Pickering this summer. More information is available at www.townofajax.com and www. cityofpickering.com. Families can have fun all summer long Policing started with humble beginnings Did you know that Pickering was once protected by one police officer on two wheels? In 1937 Pickering Township de- cided it was necessary to have a municipal policeman. Chester Wellington was hired for the job. From the Third Concession Road to the north, between Whit- by and Scarborough and includ- ing the west side of the Rouge River, Chester patrolled his beat by bicycle. When he retired in 1942, Jack Irvine used his car with a five- cent per mile car allowance. He was on duty eight hours a day, six days a week. Help arrived in 1946 when Fred White was added to the force. When Jack Irving resigned in 1950, L.W. Trinnell, a veteran of the Toronto Police was hired as Pickering Township police chief at $26,000 per year and Mr. White was promoted to sergeant. Two constables were added and a po- lice car was purchased. In 1951 police business was car- ried out from the chief’s home on Evelyn Avenue. After renting for some time, the force moved into newly built quarters on Kingston Road in 1955. A new chief was ap- pointed as well as a new sergeant and a new constable. In 1956 John Found was hired as a clerk-dispatcher, two radio cars were put into service and an identification branch started. In 1973 the Pickering Township Police became part of the new Durham Regional Police Service. This article and the photo are courtesy Pickering Public Li- brary local history staff. A trip into our past After reading an article about the new fashion trend of racist and discriminatory remarks that are shamelessly posted on ordinary T-shirts, it has finally come to my attention that we teenagers have in fact discarded both our fashion sense along with our ethics. Te enagers like myself have al- ways treated their individual style as if it was a personal barcode showing off their identity. How- ever, the problem that arises is that many of them believe there are too many scanners in society deciding if what they wear is con- sidered appropriate for society’s norms. These rebellious teens have suc- ceeded in their attempts to shock with their racist, hateful and dis- criminatory T-shirts, and I, like many others, am quite offended. As a 17-year-old, I’ll admit that I have contemplated buying the ‘I Wish These Were Brains’ T-shirt, thinking perhaps that poking fun at myself would also be humorous to others. Hey, that’s a great first impression for any onlookers: “Hi, I’ve got a huge chest, too bad I’m a total moron.” Needless to say I decided against purchasing the overpriced $40 T. The shock threshold seems to keep rising with this new fashion trend. How about seeing a teenag- er sporting their latest purchase of a shirt declaring ‘I bought Christo- pher Reeve’s Wheelchair on EBay’ or ‘You can’t have manslaughter without laughter’? Attention-seek- ing teens eagerly buy these gar- ments, never knowing the effect it may have on individuals who, for example, saw Christopher Reeve as an incredible role model or are unnerved at recent stories of ter- rible crimes. It’s a wful to think that for teen- agers to get attention nowadays they have to put graphic and hurt- ful pictures and remarks on their clothing. Not only is it outright rude, but it’s also hurtful to many onlookers. In addition to that, these T- shirts are being purchased by con- sumers online, which also means that they are completely anony- mous. Could it be that something called a conscience is telling them that what they’re doing is morally wrong? Phew, thank goodness for the privacy of the Internet. With all of the time that’s spent making sure Canada tries to be a non- racist and non-discriminatory nation, here we are buying $30 T-shirts that directly conflict with those goals. What’s next, ‘Hail Hit- ler’ shirts? A more positive approach to inimitable clothing in the future may involve T-shirts with pictures of friends or other non-racist and non-discriminatory phrases. These types of shirts do not of- fend anybody who may be look- ing, which is more than anyone can say for the latest ‘Jesus is my Homeboy’ trend. Unfortunately, I have just skimmed the surface of the disgusting ideas these shirts portray. Why doesn’t someone actually challenge themselves to be fresh and unique for once? We have enough shock in the world with- out these T-shirts, thank you. Just watch the news. Katalin McLean is a student at J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate. PICKERING — Pickering Swim Club members powered to impres- sive performances at the Dr. Ralph Hicken Invitational swim meet in Etobicoke from May 8 to 10. The club sent 16 swimmers to the high-profile meet at the Etobicoke Olympium pool, which attracted 16 swim teams and 516 athletes. All told, Pickering swimmers took off a cumulative 1,231 seconds and earned 149 best times in their various events. Jeff Cernele took the most time off his events, shedding 180.86 seconds during the meet. But, most of all, club swimmers eclipsed 31 club records. Leading the way, in the girls’ 9-10 age group were Meghan Toswell in the 50-metre freestyle (33.43) and Carleen Ginter in the 100m free (1;14.10) each breaking seven- year-old records posted by Brenna Wilson. From there, the most club re- cords at this meet were broken by Adam Gomba in the boys’ 13- 14 age group. He broke a total of eight club standards - the 50m free (26.66); 100m free (57.74); 200m free (2:03.21); 400m free (4:22.01); 1500m free (17:42.01); 200m back- stroke (2:22.87); 100m butterfly (1:03.74) and finally, 400m individ- ual medley (4:59.73). All Gomba’s records were formerly his own, ex- cept the 400 I.M., which was previ- ously held by Kevin Walker (5:08.54) from July 13, 1984. Following in Gomba’s lead, Ka- leigh Heard broke the most club records for the club’s female swim- mers with seven in the girls’ 13- 14 age group. They were in the 100m free (1:02.34); 200m free (2:10.42); 400m free (4:41.96); 800m free (9:46.92); 200m fly (2:31.15); 200m I.M. (2:32.26); and 400m I.M. (5:18.56). Other swimmers posting record- breaking results were: • Danielle Gomba (girls’ 11- 12) – 50m free (29.24); 100m free (1:03.28); 100m back (1:10.85); 200m back (2:29.85); 100m fly (1:07.74); • Ainsley Corkum (girls’ 11-12)- 800m free (10:08.27); • Alysha Lynden (girls’ 13-14) – 100m back (1:14.87); 200 back (2:37.88); • Rebecca Acheson (girls’ 13-14) – 100m fly (1:07.70); • Jessica Ward (girls’ 15-16) – 100m free (1:01.68); 400 I.M. (5:19.84); • Erin Gordon (girls’ 17-and-over) – 400m free (4:40.94) (nine-year-old record previously held by Stephanie Wilkinson from 1996), (4:45.52); • Alex Griffith (boys’ 15-16) - 100m free (57.01); 200m I.M. (2:20.72); 200m free (2:06.32). The 200m free record tied a nine-year-old record previously held by Derek Howard from 1996, (2:06.32). Pickering swimmers record-breakers at Etobicoke meet Allard has stellar badminton season while attending Centennial College AJAX — For Nathaniel Allard, this was a badminton season that couldn’t get any better. And, then, earlier this month, it did. The Ajax resident, who’s turn- ing 20 today (Sunday), capped off what can only be described as an outstanding season on the badmin- ton court by being named the On- tario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) male athlete of the year for 2004-05. Allard, who completed his first year at Centennial College in Toronto recently, received the award at a special evening in Ham- ilton earlier this month. “There’s gold and then there’s platinum and I think I hit the plati- num of years,” says Allard. “I went to my first year of college wanting to make a name for myself. To have that kind of season was so unbeliev- able.” Never once did he believe he’d be the recipient of such a presti- gious award for a college athlete. He believed that a winner would be picked from a group of more senior college students. “I honestly did not believe a first- year athlete would get it. I thought it would be a third- or fourth-year athlete. To be nominated was an honour, but to win blew my mind. I couldn’t believe it.” The award was due to Allard’s outstanding rookie season on the Centennial College Colts’ men’s badminton team. At the provincial championships, Allard went unde- feated and captured the gold medal in the men’s singles competition. At nationals, Allard had another strong outing to earn the silver. For his efforts, he was named Centennial’s male athlete of the year and OCAA player of the year. Other accolades included winning the OCAA west regional title, claiming gold in both invitation- als he com- peted in, and earning the OCAA Fair Play Award as well as athlete of the week. “Com- mitted, dis- ciplined, focused and exceptionally mature are words that describe Nathaniel,” remarked Mary Zettel, Centennial College athletic director, in a press release. “A great role model for his teammates who is humble but his sense of fair play and respect for the game, opponents and officials is evident to all who have met or seen him play. He is simply amazing.” Centennial’s badminton coach Tim Liu commented Allard is “dis- ciplined, focused and extremely modest for all his accomplish- ments.” Allard has won at every level in badminton, including two provin- cial high school singles titles while attending Ajax High School. As a club player, he won two provincial junior singles and two doubles titles while representing the Harwood Phoenix club. Allard’s taking the summer off the badminton court, with the excep- tion of running and lifting weights. He’ll be back competing with his college team in the fall. He’s studying tool and diemaking at Centennial. Jourdain, 28, competed in a CART (now Champ Car) race for the first time when he was 19 years old. He won for the first time in 2003, when he also finished third in the series standings. Now he is the first Hispanic driver ever to compete full time in the Busch Series. Jourdain’s entire life has been centered around auto racing. His uncle, Bernard Jourdain, was co- rookie of the year in the 1989 Indianapolis 500, and his father competed in Mexico City CART races in 1980 and 81. Michel Jr. began competing in Formula Junior races at the age of 12. For all that, Jourdain knows that the transition from open-wheel cars and a career that mostly involved road racing is difficult. The stock cars are awkward for road racers to drive. They are much heavier and less supple. Driving techniques are vastly different. And the races, even the Busch races, are quite a bit longer. “Bristol was tiring out there, turning all of the time, but there was never a sense of fatigue,” Jourdain said. “The cars are heavy, but you have power steering, and you don’t have the G-forces that I John Clark/NASCAR This Week Former Champ Car Series champion Michel Jourdain Jr. had quite a career as an openwheel racer but is trying his hand at th e Busch Series this year with limited success. was used to. “I’m learning so much about each track, and so many of these guys know these tracks in these types of cars, and they know how the track conditions are going to be at the time of the day when the race is to be run. I still don’t know yet.” But Jourdain has nothing but praise for the reception he has been given. “Everybody has been really cool,” he said. “Everyone has acted like they want to help me, and that is really good. “But sometimes....I think people are able to help you with tracks and with little details, but the car doesn’t feel very good and you have to work that out with your guys.
