HomeMy WebLinkAboutNA2005_04_13But Holland, McTeague say public doesn’t want election now in wake of testimony DURHAM — MPs throughout Dur- ham Region held their breath this week, as Paul Martin’s Liberal gov- ernment continued to sink under the weight of damning testimony at the Gomery inquiry. Polls show that support for the al- ready precarious minority govern- ment was further shaken last Thurs- day after a publication ban was lifted on testimony by former Groupaction president Jean Brault at the inquiry into the Liberal sponsorship pro- gram. According to EKOS Research Asso- ciates poll results, published in Mon- day’s Toro nto Star, the Conservative party currently boasts 36.2 per cent support, compared to just 25 per cent for the Liberals. In addition to prompting some Lib- eral MPs to talk publicly of switching political teams, these numbers are fuelling speculation as to whether and when an election will be called. The Toro nto Star poll indicates that 62 per cent of respondents want the full results of the inquiry before cast- ing a ballot. In Ajax and Pickering, the Liberal MPs say residents want full details from the inquiry. Mark Holland, the Ajax-Pickering MP, held a Town Hall meeting last Friday, days after the testimony of Jean Brault became public and “there wasn’t a lot of discussion in the meet- ing. I talked with some after the meet- ing. “There was a sense of getting to the bottom of it. Individual names keep coming up again and again.” The Pickering 48 PAGES ✦ Metroland Durham Region Media Group ✦ WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, 2005 ✦ Optional delivery $6 / Newsstand $1 Come See Our New Look! This is the last in a four-part series looking at the positives, negatives and challenges faced by patients, residents, health pro- fessionals and politicians alike, com- paring the Canadian system to the U.S. By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer DURHAM — When Canadians dis- cuss health care, competition isn’t usu- ally part of the conversation. In America, the health system is partly based on it. One day in February, Strong Memo- rial Hospital has an advertisement on a Rochester radio station promoting its heart transplant program for anyone contemplating such a procedure. Aside from promoting fundraising lotteries, when was the last time a Canadian hos- pital advertised its services? But the Pacific Research Institute, based in liberal San Francisco no less, advocates for more competition and less government involvement in health care. “Choice and competition are the great taskmasters that relentlessly de- liver lower prices and higher quality to American consumers,” says Sally Pipes, president of the institute and a trans- planted Canadian. “This is as true for automobiles as it is for artichokes, com- puters and as it is for camping gear.” The Canadian system is “socialist” and not the answer, according to Ms. Pipes. In fact, she wrote a book, ‘Miracle Cure: How to Solve America’s Health Care Crisis and Why Canada Isn’t the Answer.’ “The socialist ideal that society, rather than individuals, should be responsible for providing citizens with health care can no longer be sustained,” she states. To rein in health costs, Ms. Pipes says provincial governments are capping doctors’ pay and hospital budgets, while refusing to spend money on new tech- nology. “The signs of breakdown can be found not only in growing waiting lists Competing for the health-care dollar ✦ See Grass, Page A4 HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH GIVING HER ALL Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo PICKERING — The Sweet Adeline Eastside Harmony Chorus held court on the weekend in the food court at the Pickering To wn Centre. News Advertiser reporter tops in province Pickering Liberal MPs wait and watch Teen suspect sought after drive-by shooting in Pickering PICKERING — A teenaged sus- pect is being sought after what police are describing as a drive-by shooting Monday evening in Pickering. One man, believed to be the driv- er of the car, was quickly arrested after the incident, which occurred in the area of Alwin Circle and Den- mar Road, just off Pickering Park- way, around 6 p.m., police said. He’s facing numerous charges, while the search continues for the young man who pulled the trigger. Durham Regional Police were called to the area by a man who said he was in his car near the intersec- tion of Alwin and Denmar when a grey car pulled up. Words were exchanged, and then a male in the passenger seat of the grey car leaned out and fired a single shot through the door of the complain- ant’s car, police said. The man who was shot at wasn’t hurt. Police said the grey car drove off, followed by a dark-coloured SUV. Less than an hour later, police arrested a man who’s believed to have been the driver of the grey car. Stephen Miller, 18, of Castle Street in Pickering faces several weapons charges. Police are still looking for the in- dividual believed to have been the shooter. He’s described as a black youth, 16 to 18, with a thin face. He wore a ball cap with hair protruding from under the back brim. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call police at 905- 579-1520, ext. 2524, or Crime Stop- pers at 1-800-222-8477. ✦ See Media, Page A2 NEW GENERATION The minivan reaches a milestone Wheels pullout SUPER EFFORT Hit the streets, raise funds for MS this weekend Page A8 ✦ See Election, Page A5 P PA GE A2 ◆NEWS ADVERTISER ◆APRIL 13, 2005 $ 139 $ 139 $ 139 $ 159 $ 159 $ 159 $ 179 $ 179 $ 179 Tw in, Double or Queen - One Price Each piece (sold as sets only) 30 YEAR 30 YEAR WARRANTY WARRANTY Tw in, Double or Queen - One Price Each piece (sold as sets only) 25 YEAR 25 YEAR WARRANTY WARRANTY Tw in, Double or Queen - One Price Each piece (sold as sets only) 25 YEAR 25 YEAR WARRANTY WARRANTY Electric Bed FREE SET-UP! $ 1 1 8 2 $ 1 1 8 2 $ 1 1 82 FROMFROM FROM $699 $699 $ 699 7 Piece Bedroom Suite • Unbelievable price • Solid wood drawer fronts • No assembly required NEW NEW INTRODUCTORY INTRODUCTORY OFFER OFFER Futon Lounger • Reclines to 3 different positions $ 399 $ 399 $ 399 NEW NEW STYLE! Durham Regional Police said that around 4:45 p.m. last Friday, a man pulled up in front of a Staples outlet in a cab and entered the store. The suspect walked to the electronics aisle, where he grabbed a number of MP3 digital music players, then proceeded to walk out of the store without paying, police said. The man was followed outside by an employee, who watched him get back into the cab. As the employee ap- proached the man and spoke to him, the suspect ordered the taxi driver to leave the scene; the cabbie refused, police said. When the suspect got out of the cab and ran off, the cashier followed on foot, eventually catching up. A struggle en- sued, but the employee backed off when the suspect pulled what looked like a box cutter-type knife, police said. The suspect ran across the street, got in the cab, and it took off, police said. The suspect is described as a black man in his 30s with a medium build. Thief flashes knife, makes getaway in Pickering New windows, cameras and video door stations to be installed By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM — Visitors to some Dur- ham public schools this fall will have to buzz the main office before being approved for entry. Gary Gibson, the Durham District School Board’s health and safety man- ager, says the 23 schools that applied for provincial funding for security im- provements were successful and each is in line for roughly $4,000 worth of work. The Education Ministry in Decem- ber announced a safety plan for On- tario schools, and in January school boards could apply for funding for security cameras and other enhance- ments to elementary schools. For about one-third of the public schools, it will simply involve the in- stallation of “a well-placed window” in the front entrance area so office staff can see who is coming and going. Mr. Gibson said some schools have had multiple renovations over the years which in some cases resulted in an obstructed view of the main entrance. “The other two-thirds, we’re doing some work with some other GTA boards that have a little more experi- ence than we do,” Mr. Gibson said. “Some of them are using camera sys- tems and some of them are using video door stations.” He likened the latter to what can be found at the entrance to a newer con- dominium, a built-in camera, speaker and microphone system where visitors buzz and state their business. “We’re doing the legwork as we speak,” Mr. Gibson said “I’d prefer to put in a system that’s been tried and true in another school board so we’re not starting from scratch. We’re going to be visiting other school boards and making a decision based on that.” The work is to take place over the summer and be completed in time for the September school start. David Visser, the Durham Catholic District School Board’s business su- perintendent, says the board was also successful. “The ministry has indicated at this point in time that we have received approval for 33 of our schools,” he said. “Staff are working at this time to develop specifications to meet the ministry guidelines.” Mr. Visser said some of the work might take place before the end of the school year, while other projects would be worked on over the summer break. Public schools receiving upgrades are: • In Oshawa, College Hill, Harmony, Lakewoods, Mary Street, Queen Eliza- beth, Village Union, Vincent Massey, Walter E. Harris and Waverly public schools; • In Whitby, Dr. R. Thornton, E.A. Fairman, Florence M. Heard, Leslie McFarlane and Pringle Creek public schools; • Bolton C. The number of uninsured rose from 41.2 million in 2001. “It’s expensive in monetary terms and far too many Americans lack third-party insurance. But most Americans receive excellent care, and waiting lists are al- most unheard of. Thanks to the various safety nets that exist, even the uninsured are typically well-served,” she says. “And, whether insured or not, all Americans benefit from the fact that their basic health services are not controlled by decisions of a single, global decision- maker.” She points out that Canada devotes about 10 per cent of its gross domes- tic product to health, “a level exceeded by only three other nations.” What she doesn’t say is the U.S. is one of those three, with about 14.9 per cent of its GDP going to health care. According to Alliance for Health Re- form, per capita spending in the U.S. on health care was $5,440 in 2002. The Ca- nadian Institute for Health Information reports per capita spending on health care in 2004 was $4,078, an increase over the 2003 total of $3,885. Pastor Linda Wurzbacher, with the Blessed Hope Community Church in Rochester, is fortunate to have insurance through her husband, a Monroe County employee. “They have really good health insur- ance. I’m totally covered under his,” she says. The plan includes a copayments por- tion. “If I go to a regular doctor, I pay $5. If I go to a specialist, it’s $10.” Pastor Wurzbacher believes she’s lucky to have a fairly extensive health plan. “I know so many people who don’t have health insurance, through the church who don’t have any,” she says. “They need medicine for mental health and they can’t afford the pills. They can’t afford it. I’m pretty sure my brother doesn’t have any insurance and he has three jobs. “It’s pretty easy for people to get insur- ance for their kids. They can get low-cost insurance. It’s much harder to get for adults. I know people who have it for their kids and not for themselves.” Those people have to “live pretty ‘risk- ily’. They don’t go to the doctors when they need to. I know a woman who had a really bad bladder infection and she didn’t go to a doctor for two or three months, until she could afford to go.” Another issue to be considered is the expectation that health-care costs are going to continue to rise. An aging pop- ulation means increased demand for health care. More sophisticated medi- cal technology and increased drug costs also raise the price. Kathleen Stoll, health policy director for Families USA, says the number of un- insured rose because of a slow economy, “d ouble-digit health-care cost increases and employers passing on more and more of those costs to their workers.” Fa milies USA is a watchdog for health consumers. “Working families were squeezed by runaway health-care costs over the past four years,” says Families USA executive director Ron Pollack. “As a result, work- ers are paying much more in premiums but are receiving less health coverage, wages are being depressed and millions of people have lost health coverage en- tirely.” Jim Redmond is vice-president of communications for Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield, a private health insurance provider. “Most people get insurance primarily through their employer as an employer benefit,” he says. “The employer will de- cide how much the employee will pay in, compared to what the employer pays.” Another trend is also emerging, says Nancy Adams, executive director of the Monroe County Medical Society. “We’re seeing patients move to a high- deductible (plan). The first $1,000 or $2,000 is paid out of their pocket and then the insurance kicks in,” she says. Families USA notes workers’ premium costs went up almost 36 per cent, while their wages went up 12.4 per cent over a recent four-year period. This, despite people having to pay deductibles and copayments, and employer-provided programs covering fewer services. Ye t, Mr. Redmond says that moving away from the current American system isn’t likely. “When Americans look at the Cana- dian system, the thing that worries them are the wait times. Americans, I don’t think, would tolerate the wait times we hear about on the Canadian side. That’s the problem I think that strikes Ameri- cans the most.” Drugs are the “primary drivers of what drives the health-care costs in the U.S.,” Mr. Redmond states. That could mean people who don’t have insurance sometimes aren’t able to buy their drugs and go without, he says. The Reverend Barbara Thomas, with the Rochester Family Mission, says not having health care is “the biggest prob- lem” for those attending the mission. The elderly don’t have coverage for their medicine, so they have to pay the cost, she notes. Those without insurance “have to use the walk-in at St. Mary’s (Hospital) and places they don’t have to pay. Most go to the emergency department, where they have to wait a long time,” she states. Sometimes, the uninsured will wait so long, “a cold is so bad, it’s pneumonia. They don’t have a primary doctor (what Canadians call a family doctor). It’s very common,” Rev. Thomas adds. People with a primary care physician go regularly, Rev. Thomas says. “They go for regular checkups. “When I look at a single parent, they have a very hard time providing insur- ance.” Te ri D’Agostino, director of public re- lations and communications at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, notes the city has a high penetration of HMOs. “Most plans you sign up for a primary care physician. If they come to us, it’s for a service we provide. The flip side is those without service.” “They’ve been well and haven’t need- ed care,” says Kelly Luther, with Strong’s social work department. “Then they come to the hospital. We help them with insurance and try to attach them to a primary care doctor.” Transplants play a big role in the hos- pital’s services. “We have a large transplant program — kidney, liver and heart. We’re the only upstate (hospital) doing heart trans- plants, liver and kidney,” Ms. D’Agostino notes. The hospital also provides ‘live-re- lated transplants’ in which one family member will provide an organ to a rela- tive. “It’s sort of on the horizon. There’s a growing demand for a very limited number of organs,” she says. Ms. D’Agostino adds, “The reality is there are services that pay better. There’s a saying ‘no margin, no mission.’ It’s ironic, it strikes me, when we go out for our ad campaign.” There are some procedures that pay more, such as stomach stapling or car- diac surgery. “There’s more of a margin there.” With cardiac procedures, “It’s very competitive,” as are cancer treatments, she adds. Dr. Raymond Mayewski, medical director for clinical services at Strong, notes Canadians often head to the Roch- ester institution for services. The big one is “bariatric services” or stomach stapling, in which the Cana- dian government will pay for the service, Dr. Mayewski states. “Our service is the largest bariatric service in New York and maybe even the country,” he says. He adds some doctors don’t like tak- ing part in the Medicaid or Medicare programs because of “the complex- ity, regulations and government scru- tiny. Medicare has several levels of re- imbursements. It’s terribly complicated and regulated. “The first thing people think of with government is the hassle,” he states. As painful as it is on some, we have to keep it going.” There’s going to be political fallout from the inquiry, he adds, but those who could benefit shouldn’t be “too optimistic” about hurting the Liberal government. “Canadians want to know what hap- pened to their money,” he says, noting people want transparency. “We don’t really know where the truth is. Several individuals have been charged. Those responsible will be held accountable. Where the money has gone, it was to be returned forth- with.” Mr. Holland adds, “People are spending a lot of time on brinksmanship, g amesmanship and political advantage. “A n election, I think would be a huge mistake. It would be an election for all the wrong rea- sons,” he says, adding issues wouldn’t be debated in such an election. “I would be ada- mantly opposed to an election. It’s not what the people want.” The wait for inquiry results, coupled with an upcoming provincial election in British Columbia and a pending visit by the Queen, have some analysts pegging June or July as likely election times. Others suspect the call could come as soon as this week, if the opposition votes to bring down the government. In spite of the swirling ru- mours, Durham Conservative MP Bev Oda said she’s not hearing calls for an election from her constituents. “I suspect that there are people who want the election right away, who think that this government should be held accountable, but I’m not hear- ing a big call from constituents,” she said, noting that, instead, she’s hear- ing from constituents who want the government to actually get some work done. A second election in such a short time would be costly, she noted. “Whether we should spend another $250 million within a year (of last year’s June federal election) for an- other election is a hard call,” said the rookie MP. Still, should an election be called in the coming days or weeks, Ms. Oda said she is ready to hit the campaign trail. In the interim, she said she’ll be trying to get the Conservative plat- form out to her constituents. Father and son team are the go-to guys Right after an under- standing wife, every man should have a good hardware guy. And by hardware guy, I don’t just mean some clown with his name on a polo shirt and a pencil behind his ear. There is so much more to being a real hardware guy than just knowing your way around a tape measure. To be a real hardware guy, you have to know how to deal with people like me, for instance. People who walk into your store holding up a piece of plumbing and say “Should this have come off?” People who pronounce the “L” in solder. People who giggle when they talk about “male and female connec- tors.” I have a real hardware guy, well two actually; they’re a father and son team. They even have real hardware guy names; John and George. Yo u can trust guys named John and George. A guy named John or George tells you you’re better off using spi- ral ardox than carriage bolts, you’re going to believe him. Hardware guys always have monosyllabic names. Names like Biff, Reg, Stu or Hank. Hardware guys also have big hands. Hands that have been caught in stuff. If you shake your hardware guy’s hand and yours doesn’t either hurt, dis- appear or both, then maybe you should look around. John and George know me. They know that I don’t know a clevis pin from a ball peen. I’ve made that patently ob- vious to them on many occa- sions. But they also know that I am a man and, as such, am acutely allergic to looking like an ass. I am also stubborn and slow to admit when I don’t know something or am just plain wrong. I generally have to bleed or burn myself before I seek outside help. They know all this, and because they are true hard- ware guys, they know how to handle me. They never talk down to me and they never laugh... at least not in front of me. Most importantly, they are not hardware bullies. When I have studied for hours and finally mustered up the courage to ask them for a quarter-inch fetzer valve, they never say crippling things like “flanged or un-flanged?” They have mastered the art of what I call “steering the idiot.” They are able to take my childlike scribbles and poorly articulated ideas and make them into do-able, simple re- alities. More than that, they make me feel like much less of a dope than I was when I walked in there. They are pa- tient, good-humoured people who smile and indulge my ac- tor’s bravado when I am feel- ing my hardware oats and am bandying about terms like co- ax, chop saw and flux in com- pletely inappropriate ways. When a man is at the end of his rope, when he has come to a point where he must admit he can go no further with- out help, he is in a very deli- cate, uncomfortable place. Wrapped up in that bookcase, or deck or bathroom vanity are great gobs of his self-es- teem and pride. Hardware guys know this. Hardware guys live in that place. Bless them. Neil Crone, actor-comic- writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Air cadets need public’s help for fundraising campaign To the editor: We are members of the 856 Pickering Kinsmen Royal Air Cadets Squadron, a mem- ber of the Ajax and Picker- ing communities for the last seven years. We enjoy events such as gliding and survival week- ends and sports days, which are unique experiences that shape our lives here in the Ajax and Pickering commu- nities. Learning discipline, leader- ship and building confidence are part of squadron training. We get so much from these programs, so we give back through community service activities like tree-plantings, serving at veterans’ dinners and the Festival of Trees, and participating in parades. Here’s where we need the public’s help. To keep activi- ties available for all cadets, our tagging fundraiser, which runs April 14 to 17, needs to work. We count on residents’ support in donating their spare change to the cadets they will see outside many stores throughout Ajax and Pickering. We thank the stores for being willing to share their patronage with us, and we look forward to the public’s assistance so that the over 100 youth members of 856 Pickering Kinsmen Royal Air Cadets Squadron (aged 12- 18) can continue to enjoy the activities and programs that make our community a spe- cial place. Sergeant Jabari Terry and Corporal Clark Morawetz Create equal ground for ag preserve landowners To the editor: Re: ‘Region looking to chal- lenge Pickering action,’ April 1. It is time to clear the air on the agricultural easements. The Province, the Region and the City of Pickering placed easements on only 47 of the 96 Properties or 49 per cent of the properties in the agricultural preserve. As a Canadian and a resident of the preserve I expect and am entitled to fair treatment under the law: the easements should have been applied to all or none of the properties. Their removal simply places all the home and landowners on a level playing field. Brian Buckles and the Green Door Alliance claim to have helped broker the deal whereby the farmers pur- chased their land in the agri- cultural preserve. Fair market value of the land was $4,000 to $5,000 per acre at the time. If you believe Mr. Buckles’ as- sertion that “There could also be a huge loss to taxpayers” and that the development land is worth $300,000 per acre, then why isn’t he out- raged at the loss to taxpayers from the 2002 Whitevale Golf Club’s purchase of an addi- tional 51.3 acres of land in Seaton for $155,000 or $3,021 per acre from the Ontario Re- alty Corporation? This land is not part of the actual golf course. Arguably, the members of the White- vale Golf course could make $15,390,000. This is by any- one’s standard a very hand- some profit. The Bloc Quebecois appears to be falling all over itself to get to the polls, while the Conservatives are catching the bug too. But, and this is likely the most important factor, the public doesn’t seem to be in any mood for another election. Given that some resi- dents have spent more time at the polls in the last 18 months than at home, the apathy is understandable. However, following last week’s revelation of testimony from the Gomery Inquiry into the federal sponsorship program, an election is more possible than it has been at any other time in this fragile nine-month term. The minority government could fall this week, and if not, it’s likely only a short matter of time. Prime Minister Paul Martin has done the right thing in calling and standing behind the inquiry, even at the potential cost of his own political career. And that in itself is a lesson that must not be overlooked — the public must always receive a full accounting and investigation of potential wrongdoings by government officials or agencies. Liberal MPs, including those in Durham, will have you believe the Gomery inquiry is having little ramifications here. They are suggesting the testimony is damning to specific individuals and that as difficult as it is to hear, the party is committed to uncovering any misdeeds. Pickering-Scarborough East MP Dan McTeague says his constituency office hasn’t even received one call of concern. Boy, we Canadians are a forgiving bunch. While the ‘we’re-doing-the-right-thing’ approach may be the current party line, the Liberals should be very concerned. There is significant public outrage over what is coming out and new polls have shown party approval is falling fast. Whether they like it or not, the Liberal Party is taking a beating. There is even talk of defec- tions to the Conservatives. Quite simply, the public is losing confidence in the prime minis- ter and his government. All that said, it’s important to remember none of the allegations have been proven and that much more is to be revealed as John Gomery hears further testimony. However, what he’s heard to this point raises serious questions about the conduct and practises of the federal Liberal Party over the last decade or so. It strikes at the core of democracy. The Ajax resident has lived with the disease for seven years now and is starting to notice changes. “For many years I had no problems telling people I had MS, but in my head I didn’t believe it. And that’s been harder the last few years,” relates Mrs. Cordahi. “It’s affecting my walk- ing, my vision, my energy level, so I can’t ignore this anymore.” After she was diagnosed, it didn’t take long to decide she wanted to do her part to fight the disease. She found her opportunity in the Super Cities Walk for MS. This year once again, Mrs. Corda- hi and friends are hitting the streets for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada fundraiser, joining thousands in communities across the country. The walk raises money for research and services for those afflicted by MS. In Ajax and Pickering, the walk is Sunday, April 17 at 9:30 a.m. Picker- ing High School (180 Church St. N.) serves as both the start and finish line for the walk and all residents are invited to get involved, raise pledges, and take part. “I wanted to help with fundraising efforts for the disease,” said Mrs. Cor- dahi. “The walk is something fun to do, because families and friends get together and get involved. It’s a fun day.” Not content to participate on her own, Mrs. Cordahi has joined forces with family and friends to create the ‘Cordahi Crew’, a group that has raised more money than any other team in Ajax or Pickering the last two years. “It’s mainly due to my husband, I think he set a goal a couple of years ago to raise $2,000, and he did that. Then last year he raised $2,800, so this year his goal is $3,000, and he’ll prob- ably do it,” said Mrs. Cordahi. “He’s the major fundraiser on our team, but everyone else does their part to help out and find sponsors.” The walk features two different routes. One is five-kilometres long and wheelchair-accessible. The other is a 10-km route. Before the walk a breakfast will be served, and when participants complete their circuits they are rewarded with plenty of food, drink, and entertainment. “It’s exciting, it’s neat that everyone sort of comes together for a common cause, a common goal,” said Mrs. Cor- dahi. In a little more than two weeks’ time, the 2005 edition of the Durham Region Senior Games will take place across the region, with 12 different events over roughly six weeks. All eight regional municipalities are par- ticipating, with seven hosting at least one event. Last year, more than 800 citizens aged 55 and older partici- pated. “Registrations are going very well,” said Terry James, the Games’ presi- dent. “They’re coming in quite nice- ly.” The Games, whose objective is to encourage seniors to remain mentally and physically active, have been held in Durham Region since 1984 with participation from all municipalities achieved by the following year. The first event is 5-Pin Bowling, being held at Oshawa’s North End Bowl April 29. Bocce, running June 7, is the final event and takes place at Centennial Park in Pickering. April 15 and 16 mark the official start of the 2005 racing season for Picker- ing’s Chris Guerrieri and Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia is the setting in the first stop on the highly competi- tive Formula Ford Zetec Cooper Tire Championship racing series. “My goal has always been to com- pete at the top levels of racing. The attention of many of the top teams in North America and Europe will be on the Zetec series to find the next gen- eration of Championship Racing and Formula 1 drivers,” says Guerrieri, the lone Canadian in the series, in a press release. In preparation for next Friday’s race, Guerrieri has been testing with his new team, Aiken Motorsports, for the past several months at tracks in Ker- shaw, South Carolina and Roebling Road in Savannah, Georgia. The tests in the Van Dieman open-wheel racer have proven to be valuable to Guerrieri and his new teammate, Jay Howard of Essex, England. Both have posted some of the quickest times of all the drivers testing there. Guerrieri is looking forward to trans- lating the preparation into victory at Road Atlanta in his Van Dieman chas- sis that was recently shipped by plane. Guerrieri starts Thursday morning in Braselton by setting up his racer for the track conditions. A series of tests will be done to engineer the car to its optimum performance level and prepare it for the Friday’s qualifying rounds. Aiken has invested heavily in Guer- rieri by supplying him with the new car as well as one of the top racing engineers in the business. John Hayes, formally with the Indy Racing League, brings a wealth of knowledge to the team. His 26 years in the business have brought his talents to FF1600, USF2000, Atlantics, Indylights and In- dycar. Hayes’ Formula Ford Zetec ex- perience from 1997 until 1999 brought his drivers three consecutive champi- onships. Arriving at this point in his racing career has been a tough road for Guer- rieri. Coming off his 2003 Canadian championship win in the Formula Ford 1600 series, funding restrictions in 2004 saw him limited to only the second half of the Zetec season. Guer- rieri had a number of top 10 finishes. The Zetec series has produced sev- eral of the top drivers in motorsport, including Paul Tracy, Greg Moore, Dan Weldon, Alex Barron, Sam Hornish Jr. and Buddy Rice. For more information on the series, log on to www.cooperseries.com. The underdog Knights took the Blaze to a seventh and deciding game in the series and saved their best per- formance for last as they received out- standing goaltending and sound de- fensive play en route to a 4-1 victory. The series win was a testament to the team play of the Knights, who faced an opponent in Georgina that lost only three regular-season games all year. The fun-loving nuns of Nunsense take to the stage once more as Os- hawa Little Theatre presents Meshug- gah-Nuns!, the third musical comedy by Dan Coggin the theatre troupe has tackled. The singing and dancing nuns aren’t the only ones returning. Director Mi- chael Roantree also was at the helm for the first two Nunsense productions. And two of the actors are recreating their original roles from the first two plays. This time, the four of the nuns, the Mother Superior, Sister Amnesia, Sister Mary Hubert and Sister Robert Ann are aboard a cruise ship for a Faith of All Nations cruise. When a six-day storm leaves the cast of Fiddler on the Roof bedridden, apart from the actor playing Te vye, the captain requests the actor and the nuns to come up with an origi- nal musical revue. And the four nuns and Tevye do just that. The songs include numbers like “Contrition” and “If I Were a Catholic.” “This is typical of the Nunsense se- ries of musicals in that there’s very little plot” but there is plenty of comedy, fun and entertainment, Roantree said. There’s singing, dancing, comedy and even a duty-free shopping scene, wrapped up in a fun evening of great entertainment, he added. Roantree said he’s enjoying directing the third Nunsense play. “I know all the characters,” he said. “Two of the women from the first two plays are back in this. That makes it special.” Janet Stevenson, a veteran actor, once again plays Mother Superior. Gre- tel Cameron, another veteran, is back as Sister Mary Hubert. Donna Lajeunesse is Sister Robert Ann. Heather John- son plays Sister Amnesia but she’s no stranger to the character of Nunsense. She’s reprising the role she played in Whitby Courthouse Theatre’s fall 2004 production of Nunsense. Phil Cook, another community the- atre veteran, plays the Tevye character, and Dave Lynch plays the purser. “This is one of the strongest casts I’ve work with in our musicals,” Roantree said. They’ve been rehearsing since Janu- ary and “they’re ready for an audience,” he said. The musical director is long-time OLT member Norm Kitnee while Port Perry’s Carey Nicholson is handling the choreography. The set was designed by Ray Par- tridge, a local actor who also handled the set design of Guys and Dolls and Hello Dolly. The play opens April 14 and runs through May 7, running for four weeks, instead of the usual three. Curtain time is 8 p.m. with an April 24 matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available by call- ing 905-723-0282.
