Pickering teen dies
in an inline skating
accident with vehicle
By Danielle Milley
Staff Writer
PICKERING — A Pickering
teen died Wednesday after
being involved in a collision
while being towed by a car as
he inline skated near his home.
Derek Cameron, 15, was
being towed by a Dodge Neon
when he fell and was run over
by the car. Police were called to
the scene on Rawlings Drive at
4:30 p.m. Derek succumbed to
his serious head injuries after
being taken to Rouge Valley
Ajax and Pickering hospital.
The 20-year-old female driv-
er of the car, who Derek knew,
was not injured in the incident.
No charges have been laid and
police are still investigating the
accident.
By Thursday morning a me-
morial had been erected on the
lawn of the Camerons’ home to
remember the J. Clarke Rich-
ardson Collegiate student. A
candle burned near the curb
while his hockey jersey rested
on a green hydro box. There
was a collage of photos with a
message of love written by his
family, which did not want to
speak to the media.
“It’s a really tough time right
now,” said an unidentified
blond woman with tears in her
eyes as she left the two-storey
brick home.

‘micromanaging’

DURHAM — A motion that says
local municipalities must spend
regional transit dollars on capital
projects could lead to some local
budget changes — or it could mean
nothing if a councillor gets his way.
Each year, the Region sends
around $8.4 million to local mu-
nicipalities for transit uses. This
year, because the Region is taking
over transit in 2006, the upper tier
is saying the
money must
be used to
fulfill each
m unicipal-
ity’s capital
forecast.
Being told
how to spend
that money
did not sit
well with
some coun-
cillors, and erupted into more than
an hour-long debate at Wednes-
day’s Regional Council meeting.
“I think what is not written is
the problem here,” said Picker-
ing Councillor Maurice Brenner,
who said the Region’s directions
amounted to “micromanaging”
and treating the local municipali-
ties as children.
The motion reads: “The share
of the Regional tax levy for transit
purposes is to be utilized to con-
tinue with the capital acquisition
programs as defined in the local
area municipal transit forecasts.”
The Regional solicitor at first said
the motion clearly says money can
only be spent on capital, he later
called it “awkward.”

“I know Derek was really
into hockey,” she said.
Ms. Patel’s son went to
school with Derek and said
the two hung out some-
times.
“He seemed to have a lot
of friends, he got along well
with everyone,” she said.
Ms. Patel and her fam-
ily live just down the street
from the Camerons. She was
leaving to go to the grocery
store Wednesday afternoon
when she saw the aftermath
of the accident.
“My heart just goes out to
the family,” she said. “I wish
there was something I could
do. I just put the flowers
down and I hope they know
we’re thinking of them.”
Derek was in his first year
on a minor midget house
league hockey team after
playing rep hockey for sev-
eral years with the Pickering
Hockey Association.
“He gives everything he’s
got on the ice. He is a tire-
less skater, a real hard work-
er. He was one of the better
players on our team,” said
coach Tom Cloutier.
He went on to say Derek
was very passionate about
the game and would stick
up for teammates.
The house league play-
offs are scheduled for next
weekend and Mr. Cloutier
plans to do something to re-
member Derek at the team’s
first game.
“(We’re going to) have
a moment of silence for
Derek and hang his jersey
behind the bench as a sign
of respect,” he said.

Student had recently switched schools
DURHAM — The death of
a local student is “every par-
ents’ worst nightmare,” says
Mark Joel.
The Pickering schools
superintendent was com-
menting on the death of
Derek Cameron, a Grade 10
student, in an inline skating
accident. While he attended
J. Clarke Richardson Colle-
giate in Ajax since the start
of the second semester in
February, Derek’s death is
being keenly felt at his for-
mer school, Pine Ridge Sec-
ondary School in Pickering,
where he began the 2004/05
school year.
The Durham District
School Board had grief
counsellors at both schools
Thursday, but Derek’s clos-
est ties were to the Pickering
school, attended by many of
his friends from elementary
school, William Dunbar.
“There were a number of
students in the guidance of-
fice receiving support from
our social worker and our
psychologist,” Mr. Joel said.
He noted that the student’s
death is “another tragic situ-
ation that’s affected the stu-
dents at Pine Ridge.”
On Nov. 27, Pine Ridge
student David Preston was
killed in a single-vehicle ac-
cident on Valley Farm Road
in Pickering. Mr. Preston, 18,
a star on the senior boys’
basketball team, was thrown
from the car and died at the
scene.

Marijuana plants found
in Pickering house
By Jeff Mitchell
Staff Writer
DURHAM — A defence witness has
testified that he saw police break into a
Pickering house in which a marijuana
grow operation was later found.
The evidence, from municipal animal
control officer Scott Gibb, appeared to
contradict versions of events provided
by Durham Regional Police officers,
who have told Superior Court Justice
Barry MacDougall that the door of the
home stood wide open as they watched
two vicious dogs disappear through it.
Police have testified the door was
insecure and would not latch, leading
them to believe someone may have bro-
ken into 560 Highview Rd. on April 20,
2003. Officers have pointed to the pres-
ence of the dogs in the house, and their
suspicion that someone may have been
inside with them, as grounds for enter-
ing the house without a search warrant.
But Mr. Gibb, one of the animal con-
trol officers called to round up the large
dogs, said Thursday he saw police forc-
ibly enter the home.
“O ne of the constables took out his
extendable baton... and the pane of
glass was broken in the front door,” he
said under questioning by defence law-
yer Leora Shenesh.
“Somebody put their hand in and
opened the latch from the outside.”
Mr. Gibb also said officers were dis-
cussing the possibility there may be
drugs in the house before entry was
made.
“I was informed possibly some other
criminal activity could be involved,” he
said.
“A marijuana operation, I believe.”
Another animal control officer, An-
thony Woodward, said he heard talk of
the possible presence of drugs inside
the house.
Mr. Woodward said he also believed
the front door of the house was locked
as police and animal control officers
huddled outside, formulating a plan on
how to deal with the two large dogs.
Both officers told Ms. Shenesh that
they entered the house to deal with
the dogs, one of which was fatally shot,
after conferring with police. Both said
that had they made the call, they’d have
left the dogs inside the house and not
attempted to capture them.
Ms. Shenesh has filed a Charter mo-
tion, asking the judge to rule the search
by police illegal. Crown attorney Sevag
Ye ghoyan has conceded that police en-
tered the house without a warrant, but
had justifiable reasons to.
When police did finally enter the
house, they discovered more than 560
marijuana plants and dried dope in
packages. Kim Young Dun Kim, 30, is
charged with operating a marijuana
grow operation and trafficking drugs.
Durham police originally responded
to an animal complaint after two large
dogs ran through the neighbourhood,
one of them biting someone.
Two officers have told the judge that
they watched as the dogs ran through
the open front door and into 560 High-
view.
The lawyers made final submissions
in the case Thursday afternoon. The
judge is to rule next month.

said the goal of the motion was
to ensure the Region is not short-
changed when it takes over transit;
that municipalities are to continue
their planned purchases as if they
weren’t going to hand everything
over in nine months.
“This doesn’t mean you have
to use every single dime on capi-
tal, unless your plan says to spend
every dime on capital,” said Re-
gional Chairman Roger Anderson.
Mr. Anderson said after the
meeting the capital requirement
came about because of a move by
Oshawa.
The City decided not to buy three
buses it had in its plan for this year,
and instead added new routes and
is refurbishing some buses.
Mayor John Gray said the move
was to keep taxes down, and that
the transit system it will hand over
to the Region is very healthy and
will increase provincial and federal
gas tax revenues.
“We think it’s unfair they should
try to cherry pick from Oshawa
now,” the mayor said, calling the
Region’s move “punitive.”
Because Oshawa’s budget has al-
ready been approved, the City may
have to re-evaluate some transit
decisions, Mayor Gray said.
Or it could “tell the Region to
take a flying leap,” said Oshawa
Councillor Brian Nicholson, who
says the Region has no legal way to
force local municipalities how to
spend their money.
After several close-vote attempts
to amend the motion to remove
capital or add operational, the mo-
tion was finally passed as is.
But at the end of the meeting,
Coun. Nicholson put forward a no-
tice of motion to rescind the deci-
sions of council regarding transit.
At the April 13 council meeting, he
will need the majority of council
to agree with the motion, and the
issue will come forward again.

Unit 1 reactor

Pickering plant
official says work

PICKERING — The Unit 1 reac-

remains on schedule to be back in
service by the fall.
“The Unit 1 work continues,” said
station vice-
president
Pat McNeil
at a Commu-

Committee
meeting last
week. “It’s
more than
85-per cent
complete.
That’s an
eight-per
cent increase over last month.
“As we go forward, the percent-
age will increase. The amount of
work to be done is less and less,” he
added, noting the unit is set to be
back online in the fall.
It would be the second of two
reactors on the ‘A’ side of the plant
to have been refurbished. Unit 4 is
currently operating at almost 100-
per cent capacity, he noted.
On the ‘B’ side, Unit 5 went off-
line Feb. 10 for planned mainte-
nance and Mr. McNeil said 16,000
tasks are to be undertaken during
the outage. It will be out of service
until the early summer.
Units 6, 7 and 8 are operating at
full power. Unit 7 will be taken off-
line for maintenance when Unit 5 is
back in service, Mr. McNeil said.
Ontario Power Generation is cur-
rently before the Canadian Nuclear
Safety Commission, seeking a five-
year operating licence for the ‘A’
side. The present two-year licence
expires at the end of June.
Licensing hearings are two-day
affairs and the first was Feb. 24.
“All in all, the first day went well,”
Mr. McNeil said, adding the second
day is in May.

assessing 18 women
as precaution
By Danielle Milley
Staff Writer
AJAX — Eighteen new mothers
and their newborns are being as-
sessed after a step in the steriliza-
tion process was missed on equip-
ment used at the Rouge Valley Ajax
and Pickering hospital over a five-
day period.
On Tuesday, staff members were
alerted to a lapse in the steriliza-
tion process related to four trays of
equipment used during birth in the
labour and delivery area. The four
trays were washed, cleaned and
disinfected, but not sterilized.
Rouge Valley contacted an ex-
pert to determine if missing this
step has any health implications.
“The processes it already went
through may have been sufficient,”
said Anne Marie Males, director of
communications.
The potentially affected patients,
who were in the hospital between
March 18 to 22, have already been
contacted by the hospital. They
are being asked to return for as-
sessment, counselling and vacci-
nations against Hepatitis B, which
Ms. Males said is the only disease
they were at risk of contracting.
“I would say the risks here are
extremely minimal,” said Dr. Ian
Kitai, head of Rouge Valley’s infec-
tion control department. “But we
want to do everything possible to
protect our patients and are recom-
mending vaccination as an added
precaution.”
Ms. Males said the hospital is in-
vestigating how this happened and
has already begun a review of rel-
evant processes and procedures.
The trays of equipment have a
test strip on them that changes co-
lour once they go through the last
step, which involves being heated.
A staff member noticed the test
strip on the batch hadn’t changed.
“This is clearly an isolated inci-
dent. The processes we put in place
did work, it just didn’t work soon
enough,” Ms. Males said.
She said the hospital has re-
sponded quickly to the issue to
ensure patient safety. Only four
women would have been at risk.
“We don’t know exactly which
tray was used with which patient,”
she said, adding that is why all the
women during the time period
have been contacted.
Patients concerned about this
situation are asked to contact a spe-
cial hotline at 905-428-5314.

Look for a new book
about the famous
Canadian next month
T erry Fox may not have won the
ultimate title of the Greatest Ca-
nadian, but one thing is for sure,
as long as Canada is around, Terry’s
name will be near the top of any list of
great Canadians.
In the manufactured, made-for-TV
vote on CBC, Saskatchewan politician
Tommy Douglas won out over the cou-
rageous young athlete who set out to
run across Canada to raise money to
fund research and find a cure for can-
cer. Ultimately, he succumbed to the
disease midway through his run, dying
in 1981. But in death, Terry’s dream
took on a life of its own and created a
legacy almost every Canadian is aware
of today.
In this, the 25th anniversary year of
the fundraising run held in his honour,
we get a new insight into Terry with
the release of a book next month from
Douglas Coupland, best known as au-
thor of ‘Generation X’.
A Canadian himself, Mr. Coupland
had the blessing of the Fox family to
write his book and all indications are
it will be a good read. With any luck it
will boost interest for the September
run and the Pickering and Ajax runs are
always open for more participants and
volunteers.
An Ajax woman shared her memo-
ry of Terry with us recently when we
looked into how the Terry Fox Founda-
tion is calling for people’s memories
of Terry’s run. Carol Wharton lost her
mom to cancer, but remembers when
Te rry ran through Ajax, it changed her
mother’s life.
Her mom was having trouble adapt-
ing to life in Canada after emigrating
here from England in 1979, but see-
ing Terry made a huge impact on her,
changing her mind and giving her pride
in her new country. So much so that
among the prized possessions found
in her mom’s purse at the time of her
death, Ms. Wharton says, was a picture
of Terry running through Ajax.
Personally, even before my mother
was diagnosed with cancer, she was a
big fan of Terry Fox and looked up to
him for his courage. She died in 1999,
but I have a Terry Fox children’s book
my mom had tucked away in her pos-
sessions that I’ve read to my children.
It’s memories like these that keep
Te rry’s dream alive and Terry the man
alive in the conscience of the country.
I’m really looking forward to reading
Mr. Coupland’s book, because you just
can’t get enough of Terry Fox.
May his dream come true some day
soon and we see a cure for cancer.

Police budget
keeps growing
Every year when regional politicians sit down to ham-
mer out the budget and calculate the inevitable tax
hike residents will be hit with, police services presents
a costly wish list that sees the department’s own budget
steadily climbing.
And this year is no different, with police asking for $112.7
million and 20 more officers to serve and protect Durham
residents.
There’s no question that police provide an essential service
and we expect them to be there when needed. Durham has
its share of problems. Traffic gets steadily worse and seems
to breed irresponsible drivers. The incidence of drinking
and driving, judging from RIDE results, is far too prevalent
in Durham. Youth crime and break-ins happen daily, and
marijuana grow houses keep police busy. We are, thankfully,
still a community where homicide is relatively rare.
It’s reasonable to expect police to come to Durham coun-
cil, hat in hand, looking for a bit extra over the year before.
As Deputy Police Chief Rod Piukkala notes, there have been
double-digit cost increases over the past few years, a growing
population to deal with, and inflation.
But that’s not unique to the police department. Taxpayers,
too, are grappling with rising costs and inflation.
Last year, the Regional tax hike was 6 per cent on a budget
that totalled $300.8 million. This year alone, the police are
asking for more than a third of that total for themselves. And
taxpayers are already looking at another approximate 6-per
cent tax hike this year at the regional level.
In 1999, the Durham police budget was $64 million. Five
years later, they’re asking for an extra $48.7 million, or an
average increase of $9.74 million a year.
That’s pretty serious cash.
No doubt our police force has its hands full and can always
use more officers, more civilians, new equipment and ad-
ditional training. Technology is costly and police must keep
up with those advances. But the police services should not
expect to come before council and get every single item on
the wish list; taxpayers are absorbing increases at every level
of taxation every year.
Councillors have asked police to cut $375,000 from the
proposed budget to stay within guidelines expected by each
department. It’s a fair and responsible request, and police
should comply like everyone else.
Severance too sweet for regional politicians
To the editor:
I read in the paper a few weeks back that the Region gave a
month’s pay — after a councillor has been re-elected at least
once — for every year worked (up to 18) as a severance pack-
age. I can’t believe it! A month’s pay!
I don’t have as big a problem with it for those who ran
and lost the election. At least they tried to keep their jobs. To
those who decided to give it up to run elsewhere, come on.
Could you imagine if you went to your boss and said, “I am
leaving to go work somewhere else, and by the way, I want a
month’s pay for every year of work.”
It is time to get rid of the Region, though regional politi-
cians are not the only ones who are becoming well-off on the
backs of the taxpayers.
The cleanup has to start somewhere, and what better place
than the Region, where the top guy doesn’t even have to
worry about his job in the next election!

Pickering Village
church women
leaving Ajax
for Zimbabwe
on month-long
mission
By Joshua May
Special to the News Advertiser
DURHAM — They’re on a
mission from God.
Travelling under the
‘Ve’ahavta,’ a Jewish Hu-
manitarian and World Re-
lief Organization program
dedicated to responding to
global crises through edu-
cational and humanitarian
initiatives, registered nurses
Shirley Guppy and Suzanne
Blake are in the midst of
planning a month-long trip
to Africa to aid the under-
staffed employees of How-
ard Hospital in Zimbabwe.
An institution funded solely
by charitable donations, the
Durham Region community
health workers are hoping
their medical expertise can
benefit the nearly 300 inva-
lids attended to on a daily
basis.
“I lived in (Zimbabwe)
nearly 35 years ago,” said
Ms. Guppy, an Oshawa
resident. “I remember the
(medically) insufficient
conditions of the country
then and it seems not much
has changed since. When
I heard of this program, I
thought it’d be a marvellous
opportunity to help a cul-
ture I was once a part of.”
Founded by the Salva-
tion Army nearly 82 years
ago, the Howard Hospital in
Zimbabwe is a large, adult
outpatient as well as mater-
nal and child care clinic that
features 144 beds, a small
lab, X-ray capabilities and
ultrasound machine. How-
ever, the hospital’s human
resources are tremendously
lacking as there are three
staff doctors, trained in ob-
stetrics, gynecology and
general health practices,
and 21 nurses.
The pair are parish nurs-
es and members of Picker-
ing Village United Church
(PVUC), and Ms. Guppy
and Ms. Blake first heard of
the alarming need for more
foreign doctors at Howard
Hospital in a presentation
last year at PVUC by the in-
stitution’s executive direc-
tor, Dr. Michael Silverman.
Following the eye-opening
evening, the two each re-
ceived a personal phone
call pleading for their as-
sistance, which they are
answering between April 9
and May 6.
“This is not a holiday,”
said Ms. Guppy, who is also
the Parish nurse at Simcoe
Street United Church in Os-
hawa. “We are travelling (to
Zimbabwe) to offer any help
we can to these underprivi-
leged people. We are really
hoping to use our services
to the fullest potential on
this trip and to help encour-
age others, upon our return,
to lend any help they can to
the cause.”
A much needed supply
travelling with Ms. Guppy
and Ms. Blake will be 19,500
condoms. Costing a Zimba-
bwean family of five up to
one week’s wages to afford
a single condom, the hospi-
tal is often inundated with
cases of HIV and sexually-
related illnesses. In fact, 25
percent of the Zimbabwe-
an population is currently
infected with the deadly
virus.
“Zimbabwe is the AIDS
capital of the world,” said
Ms. Blake, a Toronto resi-
dent. “(AIDS and HIV) are
not just an epidemic there,
they’re a pandemic. How-
ever, that is a big part of our
mission. The 180 pounds
of supplies we are each al-
lowed to transport will go to
good use as we plan to bring
condoms, antiretroviral
drugs and the over $6,000
the PVUC has raised for this
cause. We’re just hoping all
of this makes a difference.”
Delivering more than
2,000 babies per year, How-
ard Hospital routinely han-
dles cases of transferred HIV
through child-birth and is
working conjointly with the
University of Zimbabwe and
the University of Toronto to
interrupt this process.
Those wishing to offer
donations to Ms. Guppy
and Ms. Blake’s upcoming
venture should call PVUC at
905-683-4721.

A whole body approach to total health
Chiropractic offers safe and effective health care and is
unique in its focus on the total health of the patient. So it’s
really no surprise that according to the latest Gallup Survey,
90 per cent of all people who go to a chiropractor say their
care was effective.
Chiropractic care centres on the spinal column and
the nervous system and offers a “whole body” approach to
healing. It makes sense once you think about it. The spinal
column houses your spinal cord and spinal nerves branch
out from between your vertebrate to areas all over your body.
A misalignment of a vertebrate may cause a pinched or
inhibited spinal nerve that may result in headaches, lower
back pain and numerous other ailments. That’s why spinal
adjustments can help the body heal more effectively.
By using physical examinations and X-rays when
necessary, chiropractors detect, locate and correct spinal
misalignment (also called subluxation). Rather than treating
just your symptoms, chiropractors are trained to find the root
of the problem and correct it.
Once the problem is identified,
the solution varies. In addition to
manual and instrumental adjustments,
your chiropractor may recommend
other procedures or health regimens.
Remember, chiropractic care works with
your body’s natural strengths.
Care to know more about
chiropractic?
Now that you know why chiropractic
is so effective for so many people, why
not make an appointment for an initial
consultation to talk about the type of care
and patient services the office provides.
Getting to know a chiropractor could
help you get the most out of your life.

Pickering High grad
headed to junior
worlds in Lithuania
AJAX — A former Pickering
High School wrestler recently com-
pleted a double-gold performance
at the 2005 Junior National Wres-
tling Championships.
Jake Ledoux, a six-year member
of the Ajax-based Team Impact
Wrestling Club, pinned down gold
in the 66-kilogram weight class in
the freestyle event as well as Greco-
Roman competition.
The Canadian junior champion-
ships were March 18 to 20 at the
University of Regina.
The Simon Fraser University stu-
dent, who represented the Burnaby
Mountain Wrestling Club, defeated
teammate Hardeep Aujla in the
freestyle final. Fourteen wrestlers
took part in the weight group.
Meanwhile, he defeated six
wrestlers to win the Greco-Roman
(upper body) event. In the final, he
again defeated Aujla.
Burnaby Mountain won the team
title in Greco-Roman, while finish-
ing in a second-place tie with the
Saskatoon Wrestling Club for the
freestyle title, each amassing 39
points.
Ledoux’s victories meant he
qualified to represent Canada at the
Junior World Championships in Vil-
nius, Lithuania, on July 4 and 5.

Hockey four-peat for St. Mary girls
Monarchs claim
LOSSA title by
nipping Dunbarton
By Al Rivett
Sports Editor
PICKERING — This year’s St.
Mary Catholic Secondary School
Monarchs varsity girls’ hockey team,
it seems, never does anything the
easy way.
Everything from finishing fourth
in the Lake Ontario Secondary
School Athletics (LOSSA) standings
this season, to surviving an upheld
protest from the Monsignor Paul
Dwyer Saints of Oshawa in the semi-
final, to ultimately capturing a 2-1
double-overtime victory on Tues-
day, right up to the present: Fac-
ing a strong Dunbarton High School
Spartans team in Thursday’s LOSSA
girls’ hockey championship.
And, again, in the LOSSA title
game on Thursday, the Monarchs
managed to keep their string of girls’
hockey crowns intact — capturing
their fourth consecutive Durham
Region championship — but just
barely, eking out a 2-1 victory over
the Spartans at the Pickering Recre-
ation Complex.
With the teams locked in a 1-1
tussle nearing the midway point of
the third period, Monarchs’ team
captain and defenceman Cristen
Allen stepped between a pass while
Dunbarton was heading into the St.
Mary zone on a 3-on-1 break. Turn-
ing the play up the ice and heading
into the Dunbarton end with one
defender to beat, Allen fired a high
shot that found room for the game-
winning marker.
“I just saw the opportunity, so you
have to take it when you can and
hope for the best,” says Allen.
A relieved St. Mary coach Dino
Caggiula noted his squad, like it had
so many other times this season,
found a way to win another in a long
line of close games.
“This team doesn’t make it easy,”
he says. “This season, it seems like
we’ve won 18 one-goal games. At
the end of the year, everyone pulled
together and played well when we
needed to win the most.”
Caggiula admits that even he
wasn’t convinced the Monarchs
could pull another rabbit out of
the proverbial hat and win another
LOSSA title. With most of the Mon-
archs’ senior players graduating
after last year’s LOSSA and provin-
cial-winning season, the team, for
all appearances, looked to be in re-
building mode with seven Grade 9
and five Grade 10 players forming
the nucleus.
The younger players, says Cag-
giula, “have played important roles.
They’ve watched the older kids
who’ve helped them mature over the
course of the season. At the begin-
ning of the year, we wanted to have
them gel together by the end of the
year.”
Allen concurred the new players
made great strides this season.
“Our young girls came up big and
we pulled through to get to the final
and win it,” she says.
The Spartans came out flying and
were rewarded with a goal by Nicole
Zorn at the 7:39 mark of the 10-min-
ute first period.
In the second, the Monarchs capi-
talized on a 5-on-3 man advantage.
Erin Small rapped in a rebound fol-
lowing a point shot from Kayla Rich-
ard to knot the score at 1-1.
If there’s justice for the Spartans,
it’s that they, like the Monarchs, will
be headed to the Ontario Federa-
tion of School Athletic Associations
(OFSAA) ‘AAAA’ girls’ hockey cham-
pionship in Orillia, starting Tuesday.

Athletics (LOSSA) varsity girls’ hockey championship game at the Pickering Recreation Complex on Thursday. A third-
period goal by captain Cristen Allen lifted the Monarchs to a 2-1 victory.

MARCIA A. SCARLETT-HARMON
May 25, 1958 - March 26, 2001
In loving memory of
my beautiful daughter who was
taken from us four sad years ago.
Sad was the parting, no one can tell,
So sudden on earth the sorrow fell;
The blow was hard, the shock severe,
To part with the one we loved so dear.
Her memory lives within our hearts
Sadly missed by Mom Louise, Brothers,
Sisters, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins,

tragically with her mother,
four sad years ago.
In our hearts your memory lingers,
Sweetly tender, fond and true;
There is not a day, dear Danielle,
That we do not think of you.

Durham’s top junior hockey
club closes out worst
season in 28 years
By Brian McNair
Staff Editor
DURHAM — Murphy’s Law may have to be
renamed Selwood’s Law.
In his first season as general manager of the
Oshawa Generals, it seemed everything Brad
Selwood touched did indeed go wrong — way
wrong at times.
After a promising start that produced four
wins in five games under new coach Bob Mc-
Gill, the Generals launched into their worst
season in 28 years, one that at least concluded
with a victory at home Sunday, 8-6 over the
Belleville Bulls.
In the 62 games from Oct. 6 to March 18,
the Generals went through three coaches and
managed just 10 wins, not exactly what fans
were hoping for under the new regime.
The final record of 15-48-3-2 was the fran-
chise’s worst since the five-win campaign of
1976-77 and left the Generals eight points
back of the Sarnia Sting in the league’s base-
ment.
“I think first of all there are no excuses,”
Selwood said Tuesday. “I don’t have excuses.
The record is what it is.
“No matter what happened, we found a way
to lose,” he added. “They either got used to it,
or accepted it.”
It wasn’t as though Selwood inherited a
gold mine from George Burnett, who was cut
loose as coach and GM when John Davies
purchased the team from John Humphreys
in May. But few suspected a team that had
a 30-29-8-1 record a year earlier and which
appeared to have two potent scoring lines
and an elite goalie would miss the playoffs, let
alone sink into the cellar.
The cracks started to show when McGill
benched Tyler Donati for disciplinary reasons
on Nov. 18, a 6-2 loss to the Peterborough
Petes.
Neither McGill, who was fired on Dec. 27,
nor Donati, who left the team Nov. 23 and was
later traded along with twin brother Justin on
Jan. 8, would last the season.
Although both those moves were neces-
sary, they didn’t exactly produce the desired
results. After all, Randy Ladouceur was just
3-26-1-2 as head coach, compared to McGill’s
10-21-1-0 (Selwood was 2-1-1-0 as interim
coach), while St. Mike’s finished the season on
a tear and made the playoffs after acquiring
the Donatis.
To be fair, the Generals may yet have key
elements to the future as a result: Ladouceur,
who had no junior coaching experience and
inherited a mess, needs a fresh start to prove
himself; while Cal Clutterbuck, who came
over from St. Mike’s along with a draft pick, is a
year younger than the Donatis and was one of
the Generals’ best players down the stretch.
But some of Selwood’s other moves, no
matter how reasonable they may have looked
at the time, don’t seem that way in hindsight.
A sampling:
• Scott Baker and Bobby Davey traded to
Belleville for 5th and 8th round draft picks. Al-
though far from world-beaters, the two com-
bined to play 124 games for the playoff-bound
Bulls and could have provided some much-
needed depth;
• Cory Konecny acquired from Owen Sound
for a 6th round pick. Later dealt to Guelph for
an 8th rounder;
• Daniel Torres acquired from London for
an 8th round pick. Later quits team;
• Carlo DiRienzo and Devereaux Heshmat-
pour acquired from Kitchener for Dan Turple
and a 5th round draft pick. DiRienzo incon-
sistent, but back as a 19-year-old next season.
Heshmatpour, a promising young defence-
man, mysteriously leaves team, future uncer-
tain. Turple, who was struggling in Oshawa
this season, sizzles down the stretch again,
but may be gone from league next year;
• Peter Tsimikalis acquired from Ottawa for
Chris Hulit, along with — ouch — swap of 1st
round import picks. Tsimikalis struggles in
late-going, but should be impact player next
season. Hulit leads Ottawa in scoring, possible
overager next season. Wily Brian Kilrea likely
to make most of first overall import pick.
It all adds up to a long season, one that saw
three other players suspended from within for
discipline issues and a spate of injuries that
left the team, effectively, with three lines for
the final month.

Hair donations
The Canadian Cancer Society helps people living with cancer find wigs and
other types of headwear when they experience hair loss as a result of
cancer treatment. The Society is not involved in the collection of hair or the
production of wigs, but we get many questions from people who want to
donate their hair as a way to support those who are living with cancer.
The following information might be helpful if you are thinking about
donating your hair.
How to prepare your hair
The following conditions apply to hair donations:
• hair must be clean and dry and not swept off the floor
• hair must be a minimum length (this length varies based on a specific
hair donation program’s requirements – see below)
• hair should not be chemically treated (bleach, colour or perm)
• hair should be bundled in a ponytail at both ends or a braid
Sending your hair
• send hair by regular mail to the hair donation program of your choice
• include your name and return address as acknowledgements may be
sent
Where to donate
We are aware of the following hair donation programs in Central Canada
that accept donations of human hair for the manufacture of wigs for cancer
patients. Please check the program requirements listed below before
sending your hair.

a wig. Hair cannot be returned to the donor if not used.

Coping with Cancer
Finding out you have cancer brings many changes. At one time or another,
people who have cancer may feel afraid, uncertain, and helpless. Sometimes
they may feel they are losing control of their life.
Remember that you, your family and your healthcare team are all partners in
your care. You are the most important person on that team, and there are
ways you can learn to cope. One is by taking control over many aspects of
your illness.
Everyone deals with cancer in their own way :
Learn how to work with the people involved with your care
Sharing information about yourself can help your healthcare team plan your
care. Let them know if things seem unclear or confusing to you. Find out
who to call if something happens between visits. By asking what to expect in
advance, you may feel better prepared to cope with any issues.
Te ll others about it when you feel ready
As time goes on, family and close friends will learn that you have cancer.
Many people with cancer find it helpful to talk about their feelings. This can
give their loved ones the chance to offer support. However, you might need
time to sort out some of your emotions first. It’s okay to let someone know
you’re not ready to talk, and that you’d rather wait for another time.
Use methods that helped you solve problems in the past
Some may include :
• getting information
• talking to others
• finding ways to feel in control
Tr y a support or self-help group
Support groups are a good place to get information and learn from others.
You may also feel less alone. You may prefer individual counselling, or one-
to-one peer support. Ask your healthcare team about support groups and
counselling services that may be available at your treatment centre.
The Canadian Cancer Society offers individual or group peer support
programs for caregivers, family and friends. Our trained volunteers have
been there – they have either had cancer themselves or have cared for
someone with cancer.
Tu rn to any spiritual or religious beliefs you have
These can be a source of strength and comfort.
For more information about ways to cope or to find out about support
services available in your community, call an information specialist at our
toll free number 1-888-939-3333 or visit www.cancer.ca
