HomeMy WebLinkAboutNA2005_03_04 New Automotive Centre of Excellence at UOIT comes out of partnership By David Blumenfeld Staff Writer DURHAM — General Motors of Canada and representatives from the federal and provincial governments have announced the biggest automotive invest- ment in Canadian history — a $2.5-billion reinvestment in GM’s Canadian operations. Dubbed the Beacon Project, the investment will support new vehicle and engine programs, employment and skills train- ing and automotive engineer- ing, research and development and manufacturing in Canada. It is expected to create 500 new jobs in Oshawa, Ingersoll and St. Catharines. “This $2.5-billion investment demonstrates GM’s strong commitment to Canada’s auto- mobile industry,” GM Canada president Michael Grimaldi said Wednesday at GM’s Osha- wa car plant. “It signals that this country, as well as this prov- ince, are determined to suc- cessfully compete with the best in the world.” Mr. Grimaldi also announced Billions will boost Durham auto industry Easements removed on some land in north Pickering By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — The City has con- verted some of the easements on lands in the agricultural preserve, in a deal that could be worth a minimum of $64.2 million for Pick- ering. City council approved the deal in an in-camera session Monday evening to convert the agricultural easements to inhibiting orders on those lands in the southern portion of the Duffins Rouge Agricultural Preserve that were recommended for development in Pickering’s growth management study (GMS). “Inhibiting orders have all of the controls as the easements so noth- ing has changed in that regard,” Mayor Dave Ryan said. An inhibiting order is a legal condition that controls what can happen to the properties, he ex- plained. The owners of the land in ques- tion had initiated a lawsuit against the City at the end of January to try and have the easements removed, arguing the Conservation Land Act (the statute used to create them) has no legal authority to create an agricultural easement. The deal now removes the City from what the mayor called a “cost- ly litigation process. “We were in litigation with the landowners, which seemed a little silly since we were in agreement with them. All we’re doing is con- tinuing with our previously artic- ulated statement that the growth management study deserves to be implemented.” As part of the agreement, the City received $2.5 million without AF TERNOON FIRE DESTROYS GARAGE Jason Liebregts / News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Firefighters were called to a garage fire on Sideline 20 yesterday afternoon that levelled the structure. Read up online at infodurhamregion.com But still not clear on who gets what By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM — The Region will receive an estimated $11 million from federal gas tax revenues this year, but it’s still not known how much each municipality will get or when the money will arrive. Based on Durham’s pop- ulation, the region should receive $129 million be- tween 2005 and 2010, a report summarizing the federal government’s budget from finance com- missioner Jim Clapp said at Wednesday’s regional council meeting. All that’s known so far is that money will be distrib- uted based on population, and that “actual funding will be determined in bi- lateral negotiations and a resulting agreement with the federal government,” the report said. “How the money gets distributed in Durham w ill be another discus- sion,” said Regional Chair- man Roger Anderson. “It’s a whole new deal... and we’re looking for more than just a piece of the deal.” The budget said the money is to be spent on environmen- tally sustainable infrastructure projects such as public transit, water and sewer treatment and community energy systems. The 2004 throne speech, though, said gas tax monies would also go toward roads. The two piec- es of direction could put the Re- gion and its eight municipalities in a dilemma, said Ajax Mayor Steve Parish: does the money stay with the Region, which handles water, sewer and now transit? Or will some of it go to individual municipalities for roads? And if so, who decides which municipality gets what? Mr. Anderson agreed that the Region divvying up the $11 million could be “quite a debate.” “Everyone has roads they want to do, everyone has bridges they want to do,” he said. “I think there will have to be a formula (because) I don’t know how the fed- eral government views upper- and lower-tier mu- nicipalities.” Funding will not flow to municipalities until agreements are signed with the federal govern- ment, Mr. Clapp said. He said he didn’t know when that would be, but that the money would not arrive in time for the 2005 local budgets. It’s also not known how the gas tax funding will im- pact the Region receiving transitional funding to im- plement a new Durham- wide transit system by Jan. 1, 2006. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, MARCH 4, 2005 PAGE 3 A/P Due to an error in colouring on front, Oshawa Singer Centre has just released for sale to the public a limited number of new DELUXE HEAVY DUTY FREE ARM, SINGER ZIG ZAG SEWING MACHINES. Whitby OPP said a sin- gle-vehicle mishap started the chain of events, which sent three people to hospi- tal with minor injuries. Police and other emer- gency response workers responded to a roll-over in the eastbound lanes near Brock Road around 7:40 a.m., said Constable Jeff Edwards. The driver, who was not seriously hurt, was trapped in the vehicle for about half an hour while firefighters worked to ex- tricate him. As crews worked, two more vehicles collided in the area, one of them los- ing a tire that rolled onto the roadway, Const. Ed- wards said. Several pass- ing vehicles managed to avoid the tire and came to a stop, but eventually a third car slammed into the other two. Three people were sent to hospital with minor in- juries. Investigators say it’s remarkable no one else was hurt when violence broke out at The Edge on Bayly Street. The upscale establishment was full with a va- riety of functions attended by numerous patrons, said Detective Tom Andrews of 19 Division Criminal Investigations Branch. “We’re lucky it’s not a lot worse than it was,” Det. Andrews said. “The shooting occurred on the dance floor and it was a very crowded evening at The Edge.” Shooting broke out around 2 a.m., police said. A 21-year-old Whitby man was shot in the torso; he has since recov- ered. “It started out as a dispute that quickly escalated to a shot being fired,” Det. An- drews said. Police won’t discuss how many sus- pects they’re looking for, or the relation- ship between the victim and the shooter. What they are saying, however, is that they believe a number of people from outside Durham visited the club the night violence broke out. “We know there were individuals at The Edge that evening that were from outside the neighbourhood,” Det. An- drews said. “We’re looking for people to come forward (with information) about people from out of the neighbourhood.” Anyone with information is asked to call police at 905-579-1520, ext. 2521, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Aj ax sh ooting probe extended beyond Durham DURHAM — Join a Durham celebra- tion of International Women’s Day. On Tuesday, March 8, in the drawing room of the YWCA’s Adelaide House, 33 McGrigor St., in Oshawa, a variety of local support groups are hosting a cel- ebration of past and present contribu- tions from women in our community. The event runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and the theme is ‘Celebrating Women’s Achievements.’ Eva Martin Blythe, executive director of the YWCA Durham, presents a perspective on women’s contributions. Durham residents celebrate International Women’s Day A/P PAGE 4 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, JANUARY 7, 2005 durhamregion.com durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, JANUARY 7, 2005 PAGE 5 A/P Public involvement in renewal projects not required I s a public consultation process re- quired as Durham’s school boards figure out where to spend new pro- vincial money to address needed major repairs at local schools? The Province recently announced that Durham’s public and Catholic boards are receiving a few million dollars for school repairs. With financing, the money can be parlayed into almost $37 million worth of work, which can begin this summer. The boards are still trying to figure out exactly what it means, but surely welcome the money since many Durham schools are showing their age. Former public school board chair- woman Elizabeth Roy, a Whitby trustee, at a recent meeting unsuccessfully mo- tioned that the board begin the process of figuring out how to spend the money, including public consultation. In recent years, some parents have questioned the process by which the board forms accommodation plans, namely the opportunity for presenta- tions by school council members and other parents on why their school or community should be on the list. Now, parents who do those presentations do their homework and are armed with photos and stats to make a convincing case. The question is, to whom are they making it? They get the stats from the board in most cases and don’t have the regional perspective that the se- nior staffers possess. The complaint has been made that it’s a political, squeaky- wheel-gets-the grease process and more objectivity is needed in the decision- making. So why ask the public? Staff at the boards were involved in an Education Ministry- initiated facilities review that ended last fall and identified the needs at all the schools. While the public shouldn’t be kept in the dark, most parents likely don’t know the state of the boiler at their school, or (unless it leaks) what shape the roof’s in. It’s the staff people who have that knowledge, so it makes sense that the recommendations to trustees should come from them alone. I know, it sounds crazy to argue against public input, but the value of it is questionable here. And the process would doubtless create the same kind of hard feelings that occur in accommo- dation plans when a school addition or new school isn’t approved. Let the experts with the expert knowl- edge decide where it’s spent and, since the trustees ultimately make the de- cision anyway, the opportunity will be there to advocate for a project that should have been included. Mike Ruta’s column appears every third Friday. E-mail mruta@durham region.com. P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, MARCH 4, 2005 durhamregion.com EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR S how us the details Officials need to be more forthcoming with jump in project cost Ajax and Pickering residents have watched, learned and listened these past few years as the expansion of our community hospital has taken shape. There’s been the regular updates about the strains placed upon Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering by a burgeoning pop- ulation and a facility that was built for a much smaller ser- vice area; there’s been the battle for funding assistance from all levels of government; and, of course, so many people give to the Vital Links campaign, which is charged with raising the community portion of the cost. So to say the news last week of the project price tag jump- ing $12 million came as a bit of a surprise is understating the situation. It is also doing a disservice to suggest, as some hos- pital officials are, that the increase is easily explained away. It seems construction cost escalation and changes in ministry policies and requirements are the smoking guns here. Ye t, with a total project price tag now of $59.1 million, the expansion is about 25 per cent over budget and a shovel hasn’t even hit the ground. The increase is anything but insignificant to the countless Ajax and Pickering residents who’ve invested millions of dollars into the project. What is even more frustrating is that hospital officials can’t even say how many more dollars it will now need from the community to reach its share of the goal. Without answers for the people paying the bill, there won’t be much buy in. If Rouge Valley has learned anything these last few years, and it really should have by now, it is that the public has little patience when it comes to details concerning its hospital. Trivialize the situation or fail to deliver answers and resi- dents will react angrily. All that being said, hospital expansion at the Ajax site is a must. Health-care officials there are working under trying circumstances as demand continues to outpace what they can deliver. The plans for revitalization will bring more than 80,000 square feet of new construction and another 60,000 in renovated space, highlighted by the much needed new emergency department. But residents deserve clear answers about what the chang- es mean to them and the community. They deserve clarifica- tion of the significant jump in cost. They deserve answers now. Sirens should go on top of nuclear plant, f ire halls and police stations To the editor: Re: Nuclear sirens. Last spring, Pickering residents were informed that On- tario Power Generation had purchased 27 nuclear sirens for $600,000 that are presently being stored in some facility. Public consultation took place in which 300 citizens at- tended, objecting to the proposed location of the sirens in Pickering. Since that time, the City has hired a consultant to review the nuclear siren plan, receiving a recommendation that seven sirens are needed in Pickering. How about installing one on the roof of the Pickering nuclear plant and installing others on the roofs of the Picker- ing fire halls and police stations? If you check with the other nuclear facilities in the world, you will find that one is placed on the roof of nuclear plants that can be heard from 10 miles away. School staff know the score Mike Ruta staff writer EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com By Jillian Follert Staff Writer DURHAM — The suburban dream of tranquil tree-lined streets and cookie-cutter shopping centres is becoming a health nightmare, and Durham Region is no excep- tion. According to a recent study by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 80 per cent of Canadians believe that the stress, crime and pollution of downtown living pose a health risk, but the reality is that car-de- pendant suburbanites are often far worse off. “For every hour that you spend in your car, your risk of obesity in- creases six per cent,” says Dr. An- thony Graham, a cardiologist and spokesman for the foundation. “Whether it’s commuting, running errands or driving the kids around, people who live in the suburbs are often prisoners in their cars.” He says most people would like to walk more, but simply can’t be- cause amenities are too spread out, and there aren’t enough sidewalks and paths. Chris Arnott, a public health nurse with the Durham Region Health Department, says these fac- tors pose huge obstacles to local residents. “Over the years, many neighbour- hoods in Durham have evolved to the point where physical activ- ity has been engineered out of our lives,” she says. “Over half of Dur- ham residents are not physically ac- tive enough to have health benefits, and it’s because the distances from where we live, to where we need to go, keep increasing.” While some of the responsibil- ity lies with individuals, Ms. Arnott says planners also need to recon- sider the way suburbs are designed. She suggests more mixed zoning so stores and workplaces will be situated closer to homes and a co- ordinated network of sidewalks and paths that are safe and inviting. “This is something we’re very aware of, it’s something that is now considered when community plans and strategic plans are made,” says Jim Blair, a planner with the Region. “We’re working on initia- tives to improve ‘walkability,’ and I think the situation is getting better.” One such initiative is a region- wide bike path, recently approved by council. A regional transit system scheduled to be up and running by 2006 is also expected to encour- age active living, because users will have to walk to and from bus stops. The MPP for Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge and chairman of the newly-founded Doing Business with the Ontario Gov- ernment Task Force delivered that mes- sage recently at an open forum for small- and medium-sized business owners. The session, at the McLean Community Centre in Ajax, was for businesses from Durham Region and beyond to discuss their relations with the Province. “(The government) recognizes the need to improve opportunity for small- and medium-sized businesses through- out the province,” said Mr. Arthurs. “Through this tour we want to let them know that we are seriously interested in the barriers they encounter and are committed to improving upon these ob- stacles. Equal opportunity is important.” The first stop on the five-city tour across the province, the Ajax meeting opened with discussions regarding the current procurement policies of the On- tario government, followed by an exten- sive question-and-answer period. The overall success of the meeting proved its worth tenfold, said Mr. Arthurs. Covering issues such as the exces- sive bureaucratic red tape that limits initiatives for small- and medium-sized businesses, as well as the extensive wait periods for the payment of funds by the government to these businesses upon supplying services, the meeting was an informative session, says Bill Frieday of Brooklin Bulletin Signs. “The fact that these discussions are mutual, and not just a bunch of gov- ernment officials dictating their agenda, really allowed the opportunity to share ideas,” said Mr. Frieday. Ajax businessman Malcolm Gomes was irate that the provincial government grants contracts to larger corporations in spite of cheaper small-business proposi- tions. Stating he could supply the govern- ment with cheaper notepads than their current supplier, Mr. Gomes was angered over the perceived allotment of govern- ment contracts to larger businesses sim- ply because of their notoriety. Faelyne Templer, director of educa- tion for Business Communication and Training in Whitby, added to Mr. Gomes accusations, noting many barriers exist in provincial interactions with small- and medium-sized businesses owners, especially in regard to contract bidding processes. “Businesses are given 15 days to re- spond to contract bids,” said Ms. Tem- pler. “However, when you’re a small business, it takes that long just to or- ganize a response. From having to run your business throughout the day, to caring for your family at night, there’s not much time left to read through and offer a counter proposal.” The Doing Business with the Ontario Government Task Force is visiting Thun- der Bay, Ottawa, London and Toronto in March. It will then prepare a report with recommendations, which will be deliv- ered to the chairman of the management board of cabinet. a partnership to promote automobile innovation with five Canadian uni- versities, including the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa. A new Automotive Centre of Excellence, to be established at UOIT, will better link participating automo- tive companies, suppliers, universi- ties, researchers and students in the areas of automotive engineering, de- sign and innovation, he said. “This will help create for the first time in Canada, a new degree in au- tomotive engineering. Such a degree is currently not available here in Can- ada for an industry so important as the auto sector,” Mr. Grimaldi said. “This is one of the most important announcements to ever be made in Canada because it will help define the kind of economy and therefore the kind of society we’re hoping to have over the next 10 to 20 years,” Gary Polonsky, president of the Uni- versity of Ontario Institute of Tech- nology and Durham College, said in an interview. He says much of the continent’s value-added economy is about to be threatened by the burgeoning econo- mies, and creation of goods-hungry middle classes, in India and China. “We have to invest in our human and technological capacity to be the best in the world, because that’s all that will save us, being the best,” Mr. Polonsky said. He was tight- lipped on what the partnership between GM and UOIT will involve, pledg- ing to say more soon. “UOIT is very proud to be in- cluded in that short list of leading edge universities,” he said. “I’ll have more to say next week about the nature and scope of our specific role.” Premier Dalton McGuinty, whose government is committing up to $235 million to the project, said the in- vestment is great news for Ontario’s economy, the prosperity of the prov- ince, but most important, its people. “This obviously is a fabulous day for this community, for this sector and for this province,” Mr. McGuinty said. “We know that Ontario is a lap ahead in the race to attract the best people and to have the best-edu- cated, most highly-skilled and pro- ductive workforce in North America. When it comes to building cars and trucks, nobody does it better than the Ontario auto worker — nobody works harder and nobody does it with greater skill.” Joe Volpe, federal minister of citi- zenship and immigration, said all Canadians depend on a thriving auto industry, of which the new Automo- tive Centre of Excellence at UOIT will become a central part. “With today’s announcement, the federal government is demonstrating a commitment to do its part to keep- ing Canada at the forefront of new areas of environmental responsibil- ity and innovation in the automotive sector,” he added. NEWS ADVERTISER A.J. Groen/ News Advertiser photo Michael Grimaldi, president of General Motors Canada, an- nounced on Wednesday a $2.5-billion investment in the automo- tive industry. He was at the Oshawa car plant. Gary Polonsky GM finds a partner in UOIT ✦ GM, From Page 1 conditions, as well as a forthcom- ing parcel of land for City use with an additional $1.7 million to de- velop related facilities. Also, should future development occur on the subject lands, the City would re- ceive a minimum of $60 million outside of the regular development charges. Mayor Ryan said a decision has not yet been made on how the $2.5 million is going to be used. In 1999, the Ontario Realty Cor- poration began selling the prop- erties in the agricultural preserve on behalf of the provincial govern- ment, which expropriated the land about 30 years ago. Once the land was sold, the ease- ment was registered on the title of the property as a condition of clos- ing. The easements were signed by the City, the Region of Durham, the Province and the owner, with Pickering retaining the sole right to remove the easements. The prob- lem for the landowners now lies with the Province having in- cluded the preserve in the Golden Horseshoe Greenbelt, which be- came law Feb. 24 and prohibits included lands from being developed. By reaching the agreement with the City, the landowners can now negotiate directly with the Prov- ince. Andrea Kelly, Ministry of Mu- nicipal Affairs and Housing spokes- woman, confirmed the preserve is in the Greenbelt but couldn’t comment further because of a legal matter. “It’s under litigation,” she said. Ward 1 City Councillor Kevin Ashe said the Province was in the process of getting intervener status in the landowners’ legal applica- tion against the City. The landowners’ lawyers did not return calls. Bonnie Littley of the Rouge Duf- fins Greenspace Coalition has been outspoken against the City’s GMS because of the recommendation to put nearly 40,000 people in the southern portion of the preserve. She was not surprised to hear of the deal. “It demonstrates clearly that these developers run our City and our council,” she said. “When they want something to be done, it hap- pens. “Our council has failed miserably in recognizing the full potential of the agricultural assembly.” Ms. Littley said the preserve presents a unique opportunity to not only retain land to grow food, but also to develop agri-tourism close to a major urban centre. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, MARCH 4, 2005 PAGE 11 P VILLAGE OF ABBEY LANE (PORT UNION & 401) 416-283-1882 FAMILY CLOTHING CLEAR-OUT 2 DAYS ONLY SECOND TIME AROUND THRIFT STORE Your support of this store benefits children with chronic and serious illnesses and their families. Following are some ideas on how to best plan your special getaway this holiday season: •If possible, maintain fl ex- ibility on your travel dates and destination. •Don’t push the time lim- its given the recent changes in fare rules and regulations. According to www.Traveloc- ity.com, missing a fl ight may be more costly than simply waiting for the next one. •Look for low-price guar- antees, Web specials, loyalty program deals and packages for greater savings on lodg- ing. Mr. Toews has been making it a habit of late to shovel driveways throughout his neighbour- hood. By Brandon Mastromartino Special to the News Advertiser AJAX — When it comes to being a Good Neighbour, Kevin Toews is “priceless.” Neighbours of the Ajax resident wrote recently to bring attention to Mr. To ews’ helpful ways. “We have a really great guy (Kevin) in our neigh- bourhood” said Elizabeth Gomille. “Every time there is a snowfall he not only shov- els his own driveway, but the ones of the seniors liv- ing near him as well. He also does ours because he knows we don’t have a lot of time because we both work and have two children.” Mr. Toews never wants a reward for his good deeds, rather he is satisfied with helping out his neighbours. “I understand that these people have to get out early and they are great people so I don’t mind doing it,” said the 45-year-old. Gino Auddino notes Mr. To ews’ efforts make a big difference. “I leave for work early and get home late so I don’t have a lot of time to do things like shovel the driveway,” he said. “My wife and I have a new baby and Kevin knows things are really busy lately. Sometimes I hear him out there as early as 6 or 7 a.m. shovelling the driveways. The guy is priceless.” If you have a story to tell about a Good Neighbour who has gone above and beyond to help some- one in a time of need, let us know by e-mailing dstell@durhamregion.com. For students with psychiat- ric disabilities the task may seem overwhelming. To aid students in their quest for higher education, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) has re- leased a guide called Your Education — Your Future, the first comprehensive Canadian guide for college and university students with psychiatric disabilities such as depression, anxiety dis- order, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. “These years often deter- mine the future of our young people, and for students liv- ing with a mental illness, the challenges can become bar- riers to success — making their future uncertain if they don’t get the understand- ing and support they need from their schools and their peers,” says Bonnie Pape, CMHA’s national director of programs and research. According to Statistics Canada, teenagers and young adults aged 15 to 24 experience the highest inci- dence of mental disorders of any age group in Canada. The goal of the new re- source is to make the tran- sition to college or univer- sity smoother for students with psychiatric disabilities, while guiding them through each step of their program. “The book is written for the student,” says Willona Blanche, director of the Cen- tre for Students with Disabil- ities at Durham College and the University of Ontario In- stitute of Technology (UOIT). “These are things we talk about here — where to go for services, how to set real- istic goals, about being your own advocate and getting the support you need. The Health Centre (at the college and university) is also using the booklet. It’s good to see it all written down and avail- able to students.” Ms. Blanche says staff ad- vise students on disclosure issues around their particu- lar disability. “All of the information is confidential,” she said. “It’s up to the students whether they want their professors to know about their disabilities. Students willing to share the information are breaking down the barriers.” Topics in the guide include sections such as: Is college or university for you?; Choos- ing your program; How to succeed in your studies; Ac- cepting and managing your illness. The guide also provides addresses to additional web resources. “This new resource can be a very important tool, especially for high school students with a psychiatric disability, because it can help them realize that col- lege and university can be a chosen life path,” says a York University student who has a psychiatric disability. Chili Palmer leaves Hollywood to go into the music biz in ‘Be Cool’ New pipes and drums band will promote Durham College and university By Jillian Follert Staff Writer DURHAM — When it comes to getting people’s attention, noth- ing beats bagpipes. Except maybe drums. That was the logic behind pro- fessor Bob Anderson’s idea to start a pipes and drums band as an in- novative way to promote Durham College and UOIT in the commu- nity. “When you see pipers go by at a parade or event, you can’t help but watch,” he said. “I think it will be a really high-profile entertaining way to get the school name and colours out there.” When he’s not teaching courses for the school’s justice department, Mr. Anderson is steadily improving his own piping skills, having taken up the instrument three years ago at the age of 57. Even with regular practise playing with the Uxbridge Legion band, he said it will take another five or six years to master the instrument. “It’s a very challenging hobby, people say the pipes are the hardest instrument in the world to learn,” he said. “I’m hoping this will help people who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity learn to play.” The plan is to start the band with experienced pipers and drummers, and phase in beginners. Award- winning solo piper Kirk Hill has signed on to provide free instruc- tion to those at all levels. If enough interest is shown, Mr. Anderson hopes to have the group playing campus sports events, pa- rades and community fundraisers within a few months. “I’m very excited to be doing this, there are only three or four schools in Canada with pipes and drums bands, so this is very unique,” Mr. Anderson said. Interested pipers will be re- quired to bring their own instru- ments, while drums will be pro- vided. Membership is not limited to students. Experienced players of any age are welcome to fill the initial spots. Band meetings are tentatively set to begin the first week of March and continue every Sunday night. For more information contact Bob Anderson at 905-721-3111 ext. 7381. Sounds of Scotland come to UOIT Bob Anderson is leading the charge for a pipes and drums band at Durham College and UOIT. The CD, ‘Deliverin’ the Dirt’, will be on sale at the release party, but Rob Tyler, one half of the band with Allan MacKay, says it will be an intimate setting to talk with ‘friends’, which is how he describes fans of the band. Two for the Show has been playing in the Durham area for several years. The two Ajax men in recent years have been the house band and hosts for the Toronto Rock in the National La- crosse League and the Otta- wa Renegade of the Canadi- an Football League. As well, Tyler says, through Molson Canada, they have played at arenas across Canada. The all-new comedy CD features some of their fa- vourite humour from their shows, including a live song recorded at the Tartan in Os- hawa. The release party is at the Wing Shack in Whitby on Tuesday, March 8. They are performing original music from all stages of their ca- reer. The event is free and the first 100 people get a free T- shirt. It starts at 8 p.m. and ends at approximately 11 p.m. For more information about the new CD, go to www.twofortheshow.org. Pickering High takes senior boys’ crown from defending champion Monarchs By Al Rivett Sports Editor DURHAM — Will the Pickering High School Trojans catch a break from provincial high school bas- ketball championship organizers when the seedings are unveiled this afternoon (Friday)? Not likely, says Ron Parfitt, the head coach of the Trojans’ senior boys’ basketball team, who likens his team, and previous Durham Region representatives, to the well- worn Rodney Dangerfield maxim: We get no respect. “We’ve earned, in my opinion, a fifth or a sixth seed, but what we expect is much lower,” predicts Par fitt, clearly believing those in charge of the seeding process will overlook his young team’s accom- plishments. “A couple of top teams we lost to earlier in the year when we played (Toronto) teams with a shadow of our team — some guys playing football and Lynden (Rain- ford) with a broken wrist, but they won’t take that into account. We might get a seventh, eighth or ninth (seed), but it’s more likely to be 10th or 11th. They have no respect for Durham basketball.” The Trojans (32-6) earned the right to join 15 other squads at the Ontario Federation of School Ath- letic Associations (OFSAA) ‘AAAA’ championships in Hamilton from March 7 to 9 after capturing the Durham Region crown on Tuesday night. Pickering High de-throned the defending champion St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Mon- archs 56-52 before a packed house at the Pickering school. It was the Trojans’ second-half defence, above all else, that paved the way to victory, especially where it applied to Monarchs’ guard Duane Howard. After going off for 22 points, including four three- point field goals in the first half, Howard was the man the Trojans needed to corral in the second half. Double-teaming Howard for much of the second half, the Tro- jans curtailed the talented guard as he scored only seven more points, and did just enough offen- sively down the stretch to hold off a scrappy Monarchs squad for the third time this season. Parfitt notes the team’s defen- sive adjustments in the second half were key. “We started running a second guy at Duane. We picked him up at three-quarter court, we didn’t want to pick him up that high earlier in the game in case we got into foul trouble. We waited and then (Ste- phen) Lopez did a good job on him in the second half.” Although the Trojans — unde- feated at 12-0 in Lake Ontario Sec- ondary School Athletics (LOSSA) league and playoff action this sea- son — had defeated the Monarchs handily in their two previous regu- lar-season meetings, Parfitt says there was plenty to be concerned about entering the championship clash. “They have guys who can shoot from the perimeter, they got (for- ward Erik) Glavic inside and it’s in their gym, everything was in their favour. Our guards did not have a good game offensively, but they did well defensively, and that was all we needed,” says Parfitt. Monarchs’ head coach Mike Gordensky praised his team, noting his players saved their best effort against the Trojans for the champi- onships. “I’m very proud of how they played. We knew it was going to be a close game. We weren’t going to get blown out. We weren’t going to give up. We were one possession away from winning.” Gordensky says he knew the Trojans would key defensively on Howard in the second half. The trouble was that a second scoring option didn’t emerge. “You’re not going to beat Picker- ing with one guy, you have to do it with everyone involved. The kid played a hell of a game, but team basketball beats individual basket- ball any day. We needed other guys to step up.” The contest didn’t go off without a hitch, though. With 21 seconds remaining in the game and the Trojans ahead by two, Pickering High was whistled for a 10-second violation while guard Lopez was at- tempting to inbound the ball, thus turning it over to St. Mary. Mean- while, the clock had only had shed eight seconds, causing some fans to come out of their seats in disagree- ment. The Monarchs, however, couldn’t capitalize as, just seconds later, guard Ryan Lerma was called for three seconds in the key, giving the ball back to the Trojans with 10 seconds to go. The game was close throughout, with the Monarchs clinging to a 14- 12 lead after the first quarter and ending the second quarter on a 4-0 run to lead 34-30 at the half. With the game tied 44-44 with a minute remaining in the third quarter, Trojans’ guard Devoe Jo- seph sank a three-pointer in the last 30 seconds of play to lift them into a 47-44 lead at the end of the third. Pickering High would never trail in the fourth quarter. Rainford led the Trojans with 15 points, followed by Tim Cozier with 14 and Lopez with 12. Howard netted 29 for the Mon- archs. Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo Pickering High School Trojans’ Damion Davis attempts to get to the basket while being guarded closely by St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Monarchs’ forward Erik Glavic during the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) ‘AAAA’ senior boys’ basketball championship in Pickering on Tuesday night. The Trojans posted a 56-52 victory to unseat the defending champion Monarchs. Tr o jans could be dark horse at provincials AJAX — Can the Pickering High School Trojans battle with the big boys from Toronto on the basketball court at the provincials in Hamilton next week? According to Trojans’ senior boys’ basketball coach Ron Parfitt, the an- swer’s an emphatic ‘yes’. “We have to play as well as we’re going to play to stay with the top three teams. After that, I think we can play with them. If we get a few breaks you never know, but I think personally we’re going to get a rot- ten seed, though.” Another believer that the Trojans might be taken lightly by the titans of Toronto is St. Mary Monarchs head coach Mike Gordensky. “Pickering High School is as good as anybody in the province,” says Gordensky. “Their defence alone will keep them in every game. They have a good chance to go to the quarter-finals and once you get there, anything can happen. They’re definitely a top-10 team in the prov- ince.” Parfitt says it’s been a learning curve for his young players this sea- son. One lesson, for instance, was the confidence gained from playing the top-ranked Oakwood Collegiate Barons of Toronto in the final of the News Advertiser-St. Mary Classic tournament last month. Although the Trojans lost, Parfitt notes the game brought forward a renewed focus and dedication to team play in his charges. “I think it gave our team a lot of confidence. Like I told you before, we could win them all or lose them all if we start whining, but we’ve really improved in that aspect of keeping our focus, not arguing with each other, even when someone screws up. Everybody just says, ‘let’s go play now’. We’ve really matured emotionally this year. From the start of the year until now we react very well. If a call goes against us, most of the time now, we just play.” Parfitt says this year’s senior team is not the best he’s ever coached. But, he offers a caveat: They could be in the near future. “They’re a good team, but not what I call a great team yet, but they could be next year. We’ve had some teams near the top in the province over the past 10 years. Theoretically, we could have everyone coming back next year. We’ve got a Grade 10 starting, three Grade 11s, we’re a very young team still.” Tr ojans end hoops reign durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, MARCH 4, 2005 PAGE 23 A/P March 11-13, 2005 • Metro Toronto Convention Centre - North Building The Ultimate his or her Golf Make-Over! The Raiders ended the Eastern On- tario ‘AAA’ League season on a high note, winning six of their last eight games. The winning streak allowed the Raiders to leap frog fourth-place Rich- mond Hill and fall just short of Barrie for third place in the conference. The Ajax-Pickering peewees will play division rival York-Simcoe in the open- ing playoff round, beginning Saturday. Going into the last two regular season games, the Raiders were two points ahead of Richmond Hill know- ing they had to at least split the games to guarantee a playoff birth. The Raid- ers, however, came up big by winning both games. In the final game the Raiders went into Richmond Hill territory and came out with a 5-4 win. Adam Valadao was the offensive star with two goals and an assist. Khalid Alli added two more goals and Bannister had one. The for- ward line of Christian Kirk, Brandon LaBumbard and Joe Doherty have been snake bit lately, narrowly miss- ing several scoring chances. Doherty has also helped out on defence lately, filling in for Eric Mitchell who is out for the season with a broken ankle. Robbie Affleck’s physical presence, playmak- ing skills and strong face-off play has allowed wingers Steven Deeg and Alli to rack up the points in recent games, while the tenacious checking of Jordan Minos has seen the same results for linemates Jake Bannister and Valadao. The first game was a 4-2 win for the Raiders. Alli led the scoring charge with two goals. Deeg added a goal and an assist, while Bannister rounded out the scoring. Alex Fortin contributed two assists. Jacob Lessard also had an assist. Te am defence was outstanding, led by goaltenders Kristoff Lyons and Con- nor Wilkinson. Over the eight-game stretch, the goaltenders combined for a 2.65 goals against average. Strong defensive play by Jake Buckler, Andrew Henderson and Mitchell Iozzi contrib- uted to the recent defensive success. Raiders minor peewees ride into playoffs on positive note DURHAM — The Durham West midget ‘C’ rep team went as far as the championship game, before losing a hard-fought battle to Tiverton in the final of the Durham West Girls’ Hockey Association’s 11th anniversary tourna- ment. The recent event attracted teams of all ages from across Ontario and the U.S. The midget Lightning opened the scoring in the first period of the final with a goal from Kelly Vickers, before Tiverton tied the game with five seconds remaining in the second period. The teams battled closely until late in the third when the Lightning took a penalty, and Tiverton took advantage, scoring the winning goal with four seconds left. Durham started the tournament with a 1-1 tie against a Durham West house league select team and, the next day beat the Coldwater midgets 4-0. The Light- ning finished round-robin in first-place overall among the division’s five teams. The semifinal saw the Durham West reps down the Durham West house league selects 2-0. Scoring for the Lightning in the tour- nament were: Sarah Jennings with two goals and one assist; Jaymee Gooding, one goal and two assists; Kelly Vickers, two goals; Samantha Switzer, one goal and one assist; Jenn Scott, one goal and one assist; Lauren Sears, one goal; Jenny Masterton, one goal; Amanda Jackson, one assist; and Robyn Sanford, one as- sist. Backstopping the team all the way to the finals was Melissa Nicholls, who posted two shutouts and allowed only three goals in four games. This silver medal adds to the Light- ning’s gold won earlier in the year at the Cobourg Winter Hockey Classic. The girls finished regular-season play sixth overall and are preparing for the playoffs. Paul Cardy coaches the team, assisted by Mark Lakics and Mike Thompson, and trainer Sandi Howlett.
