Andrea Pidwerbecki, the Dur- ham District School Board’s communications manager, says the goal is to create a site with a simple structure. The current site was built by an outside agency, limiting the board’s options, she told trustees at the Jan. 17 board meeting. “It was difficult for us to make functional and structural changes to the site,” Ms. Pidwerbecki said. The new site is to be launched next month. It will feature a scroll- ing message at the top, highlight- ing important or high-profile items such as bus cancellations, a quick links area and a search op- tion. As well, Ms. Pidwerbecki says information on schools, such as the enrolment and administrative team, will be “up-to-the-minute and current.” Ms. Pidwerbecki says the most popular destinations of site visi- tors are the staff Intranet, news and policy sections. “The new website looks won- derful,” Oshawa Trustee Kathleen Hopper said after a preview, not- ing the existing one looked good, but was hard to navigate. “Some- times with a website, more isn’t better.” “It looks great,” Pickering Trust- ee Sherry Croteau added, wonder- ing if the Intranet area is also being upgraded. “That is the next step,” Ms. Pidw- erbecki replied. Council throws support behind double hatters By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — Pickering wants City firefighters to do whatever they want in their free time. At a recent meeting, Pickering council agreed to urge the provin- cial government to pass a bill that supports the rights of firefighters to volunteer for departments in their home communities in their free time. “This does impact Pickering ratepayers and our fire service,” said Ward 1 City Councillor Kevin Ashe, explaining there are volun- teer firefighters in the north. He said 170 municipalities in On- tario have passed similar motions supporting a private member’s bill introduced by Waterloo-Welling- ton MPP Ted Arnott last April. “(It is going) to recognize and protect the rights of firefighters to volunteer in their own commu- nity in their free time,” Coun. Ashe said. The Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association declared its intent a few years ago to phase out these firefighters, commonly known as double hatters. Fred LeBlanc, president of the OPFFA, said the union’s constitu- tion prohibits it, as well, the as- sociation contends there are safe- ty concerns that accompany the issue. “We have a great deal of difficul- ty with our members exhausting themselves at fire emergencies and then reporting for their full-time job,” he said. The association has asked dou- ble hatter members to ask their volunteer chiefs when the next re- cruiting drive is and to give the ap- propriate amount of notice so as to not leave a gap in service. www.blaisdale.com 12 mths - grade 8 5 Campuses in Durham Call Head Office 905-509-5005 Blaisdale MONTESSORI School Best Private School Pre-Toddler Program (12 months - 18 months) SPACES AVAILABLE IN AJAX & PICKERING NEW SUNROOMS • WINDOWS • DOORS 905-686-2445 WHY MOVE IMPROVE ? NEWS ADVERTISER “We felt it was a reasonable way to phase it out,” Mr. LeBlanc said. A motion from Coun. Ashe states that because of double hatters resigning, it is weakening volunteer fire departments in Ontario. Ward 2 Regional Coun- cillor Bill McLean seconded the motion. “Small communities who don’t have the resources benefit greatly from hav- ing the knowledge of full- fledged firefighters,” he said. Mr. LeBlanc doesn’t think small communi- ties with volun- teer departments should depend on full-time firefight- ers to fill its ranks. “We think it is inherently dan- gerous to build your service on the reliance of double hatters,” he said. However, Coun. McLean said it should be the person- al choice of each firefighter. Wa rd 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson agreed. “To do anything else than support this (motion) is to say someone doesn’t have the right to do what they want to do in their free time,” he said. The motion carried unan- imously. ✦ Double from page 1 Double hatters needed in north Kevin Ashe AJAX — The Youth Cen- tre is inviting new parents to take babysteps. Take babysteps with the Youth Centre on Tuesday Power outage hits twice in one day AJAX — The misdiagno- sis of a power outage Thurs- day morning led to a second blackout in the evening. About 2,500 customers were left without power a second time, for about 90 minutes, starting at 5 p.m. George Armstrong, the manager of regulatory af- fairs for Veridian Corpora- tion, says company officials attributed the morning blackout to a cable failure. But, the power outage in the evening was traced to an “electronic malfunction at a substation on Dowty Road,” Mr. Armstrong notes. During periods of high load, the feeders at the sub- station would shutdown, he added. “It sent back to the system operator incorrect information and that led to the misdiagnosis.” The feeder has been taken out of service and is under- going repairs, Mr. Armstrong states. The area affected in both outages was south of Hwy. 2 and between Finley Avenue in Ajax and Squires Beach Road in Pickering. The first outage began at 5 a.m. and most customers had power restored by 7 a.m. However, some didn’t have the power back until 10:20 a.m., Mr. Armstrong says. Malfunction caused second failure Surgeries disrupted by anesthesiologist meeting By Danielle Milley Staff Writer AJAX — Elective surgeries at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering have been cancelled Feb. 11 due to an anesthesiology economic sum- mit. Anesthesiologists across the province are walking off the job on Feb. 11, causing hospitals to have to cancel surgeries, for a meeting to discuss the critical issues facing the profession. In a statement released Jan. 27, Dr. Geraint Lewis, chairman of the section on anesthesiology with the Ontario Medical Association, said the decision was made in Novem- ber to hold the meeting and he gave clear direction to his colleagues that emergency, non-elective cases not be impacted by the meeting. As a result of the slowdown, three of the four operating rooms at Ajax are to be shut down with the one performing emergency pro- cedures; elective surgeries (non- life threatening) were either not scheduled for Feb. 11 or have been rescheduled, said Natalie Bubela, director of operations for Rouge Valley Ajax. “My understanding would be that they were rescheduled for as soon as they could be,” she said, adding something such as a can- cer surgery would either be going ahead as scheduled or rescheduled for the following week. She doesn’t anticipate this will cause any backlog for surgery. “I haven’t heard any rumblings from the surgeons that this is a hardship for them,” she said. Ms. Bubela said she was told about the meeting at the end of December. “The anesthesiologists here were very professional in giving us ad- equate notice so we could have the scheduled slowdown,” she said, adding the hospital was supportive of the doctors wanting to attend the meeting. Rouge Valley’s Centenary site is also going to have three operat- ing rooms open and if Ajax experi- ences high volumes patients could be transferred. “It would be the exact same sce- nario that would happen on a stat- utory holiday or a weekend,” Ms. Bubela said. Staff such as nurses or clerical personnel who work in the OR were moved to other departments for the day or given the option of taking the day off, as a vacation day or using lieu time. Ms. Bubela wants to make sure the public knows the rest of the hospital is operating as normal. “The public needs to be reas- sured the hospital is open and all the resources and services that nor- mally operate on a Friday are avail- able except those operating rooms,” she said. In his statement, Dr. Lewis ex- pressed concerns with the prov- ince’s wait-list strategy and said the shortage of nearly 90 full-time anesthesiologists is going to make it difficult to decrease wait times in Ontario. “We believe that without imme- diate action to address the critical shortage of anesthesiologists, we lack the human resources to see substantive improvements on re- ducing any wait times,” he said. He went on to say the priority of the Feb. 11 meeting is to get feed- back on the government’s wait-list strategy is being implemented in hospitals and on the issues anes- thesiologists are facing as a result. The OMA section of anesthesiol- ogy is also working on negotiating a new contract with the government. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, JANUARY 30, 2005 PAGE 3 A/P By Lesley Bovie Staff Writer DURHAM — The construction of the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Region Cancer Centre is right on schedule, says Lakeridge Health Corporation CEO Brian Lemon. “We had some issues with the amount of rainfall over the sum- mer but with a project this size, you always have some issues,” he said in an interview. “We’re still expecting the completion to be on time.” Construction began in June on the $103-million project being un- dertaken by EllisDon Construc- tion. The cancer centre is expected to be complete by July 2006, with services to ramp up over the next six months. “We should begin treat- ing cancer patients there in the summer or fall,” said Mr. Lemon. The work also includes “fitting out” the north wing, which was built during the last phase of construction, with a new emergency department, in- tensive care unit and operating rooms. The CEO said those projects are also on schedule and are slated to be complete in December 2005 for a January 2006 opening. He confirmed reports that the concrete recently poured for the cancer centre’s six radiation bun- kers didn’t pass its first inspection, but said there were no delays or cost overruns as a result. “There were issues, as there often are, with the pouring of con- crete bunkers. They have to be carefully inspected and anything less than quality has to be worked out with the contractor. Changes will be made,” Mr. Lemon said. A special concrete made with iron fillings must be used, which is dense and very difficult to pour, he explained. In the meantime, the Oshawa G eneral Hospital Foundation is currently advertising its sixth annual Cash for Cancer Lottery, which helped put fundraisers over their $39-million goal of raising money for the construction of the cancer centre. The lottery’s focus now is raising dollars for the “endless require- ments for equipment” at the cen- tre, Mr. Lemon said. John Wolters bought his cattle farm almost 50 years ago. Har- vey Graham has been harvesting crops in Scugog for most of his life. The three longtime farmers were part of a standing-room-only crowd that packed Brooklin United Church Mon- day afternoon to vent frustration over the provincial government’s proposed greenbelt legislation. “We’ve been providing the cheapest food in the world for the community for years, and now they repay us by taking away the value of our land, which is our pension,” Mr. Graham said to the over 100 residents assembled. “We don’t have fancy retirement plans, our land is all we have. We want answers. What’s going to happen to us now?” PC municipal affairs critic Tim Hudak joined Durham Region area Progressive Conservative MPPs John O’Toole, Jim Flaherty and Jerry Ouellette in trying to provide some answers, as part of his on- going tour through affected municipali- ties. The Erie-Lincoln MPP is hoping to gather feedback from residents, which will be used to amend the legislation before it receives a third reading next month. “There are more questions here today than answers,” said Durham MPP O’To ole, noting that he has been fielding a con- stant stream of calls from anx- ious constituents in north Durham. “It’s fine to say we want to pro- tect green space, no one disagrees with that... but at whose expense?” Mr. Hudak indicated that taxpayers will shoulder much of the weight if the ability to expand commercial and in- dustrial space is frozen, leaving munici- palities with a limited tax base to fund roads, sewers and other necessities. Far mers said their main concerns re- volve around property rights and farm viability. “I’m worried about the act telling me how I can farm,” said Ivan Young, whose land falls inside and outside the green- belt boundary. “It says normal farm practices will be allowed, but what does that mean? We need teeth in the legisla- tion that makes sure we decide how to farm on our own land.” Other speakers asked about restric- tions to on-farm operations, such as bakeries or wineries, that create much- needed revenue for struggling opera- tors. “There could be restrictions on how many buildings can be added to the property and the number of hours that can be worked... and that will severely restrict the value added to a farm,” Mr. Hudak confirmed. “If you have green- belt land, you might even have to file an application to build a barn or a garage on your property.” Mr. Hudak said a responsible green- belt strategy should include financial support for municipalities and farmers, citing more LCBO shelf space for more funding, while Mr. Flaherty stressed the need for a full environmental assess- ment to be completed. All were in agreement that the pro- cess is being rushed, and should be halted to allow for further consultation, especially with farmers whose liveli- hoods depend on the outcome. “What they’re doing to everyone in this room is criminal and we need to stand up and say no,” said Ms. Winter, to thundering applause. “They’re talk- ing about devaluing our land, raising our taxes and taking away everything that we’ve worked for all these years. It’s time to fight back.” After consultations, a series of all- party hearings on the greenbelt legisla- tion is planned for the week of Jan. 31. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, JANUARY 30, 2005 durhamregion.com EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR Hold the reins on horse taxes Property taxes are galloping through the roof for many in Durham Region’s equestrian community, since stables offering boarding or riding lessons can now be classified as commercial properties. Consider the Hampton family who got a “real shock” when a tax bill for $15,000 came in, because a portion of their prop- erty is leased for use by a horse owner. All across Durham and beyond, the word is spreading among those who own horses that it might soon be unaffordable to do so. The concern is real. If you’re living on a residential farm and offer riding lessons for $40 an hour, or board out a stall in the barn for a few hundred dollars, it’s certainly not going to make financial sense if, in return, the entire acreage of the property is taxed as a commercial enterprise. Property assessments are conducted by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC), based on legisla- tion set by the Ministry of Finance. According to Rose McLean of MPAC, the agency took a closer look at equestrian centres after receiving a complaint in 2002 from a ratepayer who was being assessed commercially, while others were not. Ms. McLean says reassessments were carried out for the next few years, and then new bills started rolling in. There is confusion among members of the equestrian com- munity, which is fairly large in Durham. Ms. McLean says there is no set definition as to what makes a horse farm agri- cultural or commerical, so MPAC decided that anyone giving riding lessons, boarding or selling equipment is commercial, while breeding is considered agricultural. MPAC says it has had discussion with the Province on creat- ing a definition everyone can understand, but a draft defini- tion is not yet being enforced. The Ministry of Finance needs to hold the reins on this. The equestrian community has not had input into the issue. Instead of advising individuals how to go through the assess- ment appeal process, there needs to be a coming together of equestrians and government to work out something fair. Otherwise, the cost of taking riding lessons or boarding a horse will be out of reach to many people who now do so, and would make operating a stable cost-prohibitive to others. And putting people out of business can’t be good for the tax man, either. Medical need compared to tsunami relief To the editor: Canada has given abundantly to the Tsunami Relief Fund. Survivors will soon be arriving in Canada, with immediate OHIP benefits coverage. I am a Canadian citizen, and a government employee. I am presently fighting for my survival! As I have insulin-de- pendent diabetes, I require an insulin pump, for my survival. I am fighting our Ontario government/OHIP/benifit care provider to accept coverage for the pump. Everywhere I turn, another door is slammed in my face. Our government is ignorant to the necessary benefit cover- ages that are needed for a diabetic to survive. I have no control. I cannot work, and I have no money to purchase a pump. I go to bed every night afraid that I will not wake up, then worry that EMS will not get to me, in time. Hit the off switch and bring back the night for everyone to enjoy I t’s an adjustment driving south to north in Durham. After moving from downtown To- ronto to Ajax, the city lights hardly regis- tered. The lights (a lot of them) were on at night. Big deal. And before that, while living way up in Zephyr as a self-ab- sorbed teen, there were far more other important things to worry about. But now, while driving regularly be- tween Zephyr (where the parents still live) and Ajax, it’s startling to see the difference between the two areas. And the very, very dark to very, very light has a name: light pollution. I notice it the most driving down West- ney Road. You travel in relative pitch darkness until just south of Taunton Road when a giant subdivision sends sheets of light skyward. From then on, the blinding strip malls and giant inter- sections start, then Hwy. 401 and so on to Lake Ontario, where, luckily, it gets pretty dark again. Most people wouldn’t think about the negative effects of light. But as Ian Wheelband of the Durham Region As- tronomical Association (DRAA) points out, excessive light hurts the eyes, dis- rupts sleep and activities of humans, animals and plants, and costs Durham millions of dollars. Hop onto the DRAA web site (drastronomy.com) for some amazing pictures: entire communities complete- ly lit up from space, neighbourhood streets blocked out by the glare of street- lights. We’ve all become so accustomed to things being lit up so much that we for- get what it was like when the stars were visible. Even in little Zephyr, at the park where many nights were spent having shoe-kicking contests, it’s becoming hard to see the Big Dipper. The good thing is that there are things we can do. Municipalities such as Os- hawa are replacing light standards with more efficient ones. Homeowners can also replace their light-polluting out- door fixtures. And hopefully the Region will be a leader, and take the DRAA’s suggestion to make it a requirement for municipali- ties to use non-polluting lights when it makes changes to its official plan in the coming months. Because it’d be nice to bring back the night, right? Carly Foster’s column ap- pears every third Sunday. This article was the result of a six-week trial period, on the Fitvibe® of the editor’s team of Flair, a European glossy magazine for women Get a lean body workout without even breaking a sweat or working yourself to death for hours in a fitness centre. Effortless workout: 8-10 minutes=one-hour long workout. Fitvibe® utilizes a whole body vibration that sends mechanical vibrations to the body through a vibration plate. You simply stand on a plate that vibrates, 20 to 60 times a second. Those vibrations make your muscles contract and relax involuntarily. During normal training, you use 40 per cent of your muscle fiber on average. With fitvibe®, that number is increased to 80 or 100 per cent, which improves the effectiveness of your training. For example two to three times of 30 seconds of flexing stomach muscles on the fitvibe® is equivalent to doing 100 sit-ups. The intense vibration also improves blood circulation and joint mobility, prevents Osteoporosis by increasing bone tissue. It decreas- es cellulite and tightens the skin, removes toxins in your body quicker and automatically gives your body a leaner appearance. With the fitvibe® the frequency of that vibration can be adjusted from 20 to as much as 60 Hz (20 to 60 vibrations per second). With frequencies of 30 Hz and higher, the tens- ing of the muscles is very intense and highly effective. Anyone that trains three times a week will feel after one or two weeks that he or she has been working out. After three to four weeks, you will be able to see the first results: firmer skin, a smaller pant size and sometimes even shed pounds. 1 Minute = 100 sit-ups “I trained faithful- ly three times a week on the fitvibe®. I did it before work, know- ing that the training is not at all tiring and that you don’t break a sweat. I didn’t find the exercises hard at all, but I often felt the next day that my muscles had got a workout. Once I even got rather stiff. After four weeks, I noticed that my bottom was firmer than it had been ad I was over two pounds lighter. I’m convinced.” Sarah, 27 Many international movie stars and athletes have whole body vibration to thank for their healthy bodies. The fitvibe® whole body vibration program is suitable for young and old, athlete and non-athlete. Best of all, a whole body vibration can help reduce your “February Blahs”, by increasing your body’s production of the “happy” hormone (HGH) while actually decreasing the stress hormone (Cortisol). Working 12 to 15 hours a day, he practiced out of the hospi- tal as well as out of people’s homes. In 1996, he went to Australia to work on his Masters and did so while working in a hospital part time. There he received extensive training on doing module therapy on patients. He also learned how to administer U/V phototherapy on patients with psoriasis, dermatitis, vitiligo, etc. After graduating in 1998, he went back home to teach physiothera- py courses at the University where he also led various researches. While doing this, he also had his own private practice. In 2002, he had to make the biggest decision of his life. He had written exams in order to get into the PhD program at Tehran University and he ranked first place, landing him a scholarship in the program. At the same time he also received his visa to come to Canada where he dreamt of coming to practice. After much consideration, Abbas decided to decline the scholarship and come to the country of ample opportunity. After arriving in August 2002, he wrote the Physiotherapy National Exam (PNE) and scored 680/700, which was the best mark in all of Ontario. He started working part time as a physio assistant at Active Therapy in January 2003. Even though he had achieved his goal of working as a physiotherapist in Canada, Abbas was determined to be an expert in various fields so that he can provide the best treatment for his patients at Active Therapy. In March 2003, he started working part time with the Advanced Physical Therapy Education Institute (APTEI) assisting in various physiotherapy courses. In September 2003, he started taking a part time course in Osteopathy as part of a five-year program in order to become a Doctor of Osteopath. In March 2004, along with a colleague from APTEI, Abbas published a book called A Clinical Manual on Therapeutic Taping for Peripheral and Spinal Syndromes. This was part of many more to come as recently two more articles have been approved to appear in the next version of the Canadian Physiotherapy Journal. Abbas has also gained extensive experience in treating TMJ patients who constantly have jaw-joint pain. This is another area of practice, which Abbas has researched and gained extensive experience in treating. Recently, he was invited to attend a conference with the Educational Influential Therapists of Ontario, which is a part of the WSIB program to improve the quality of care in low back pain. In his Dr. Abbas Veramini, always a step ahead spare time, he continues to do research so that he can stay up to date in his pro- fession in order to provide the best therapy for his patients. Active Therapy is located at 1099 Kingston Road, Suite 242 in Pickering. They have physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, custom-made foot orthotics and U/V phototherapy services at the clinic. A quick look at the successes of our local clubs reveals why. One of the local Curves stars is Nancy Raby of Pickering. She’s lost 102 pounds since she started with Curves, dropping from a size 22 to a size 10! Her story is that of many Canadian women who have found a new home and a new life at Curves. Between work and family, many women think they don’t have time for exercise. But Curves has risen to the top because it has shown women that exercise can take as little as a half an hour, three times a week.“The Curves program fi ts my busy lifestyle be- cause the workout is only 30 minutes,” said Nancy.“I get a complete workout of strength training and cardio which, along with the weight loss, has improved my fl ex- ibility and lowered my blood pressure.” MaryAnn Parsons, manager of Nancy’s Curves location, says that “Nancy is a great example of what women can accomplish with us. We’re here to help women with their physical fi tness and teach them proper eating habits, but there is much more to it than that. The Curves community creates a network which encourages and supports women in all aspects of their lives.” Mary- Ann practices what she preaches – she has lost 45 pounds at Curves herself. “We know how successful Curves is, based on the numbers of women that our franchisees have helped—more than four million worldwide,” said Curves founder and CEO Gary Heavin. “But it’s nice to be publicly acknowledged as the best of the best by Entrepreneur magazine.” Those four million women are all around us and growing daily – one Nancy Raby at a time. After Before Applicant: there’s enough employment land for Ajax subdivision DURHAM — A devel- opment group says there’s enough other employment land in Ajax to allow a subdivi- sion in north Ajax. Beechridge Farms Lim- ited (a partnership between Tribute and Runnymede) wants to build a 547-lot resi- dential subdivision at the cor- ner of Rossland and Salem roads on land currently des- ignated industrial, a report to Tuesday’s planning committee said. Beechridge says there’s enough employment land to support Ajax, while reports to the Town say there will be constraints in the coming years. The Region will now pro- cess the application and make a decision at a later date. Strain on long-term care beds DURHAM — Despite more long-term care beds from the Province, Durham’s aging population will continue to put a strain on the system, a report to Thursday’s health and social services commit- tee said. The Province has prom- ised to spend $1.2 billion to build 20,000 new long-term care beds in Ontario by 2006, 668 of which will come to Dur- ham. But the region’s popula- tion of those 65 and older will grow from 49,951 in 2001 to 58,361 in 2006, and to 71,300 by 2011, the report said. There are currently 640 people waiting for a long-term care bed in Durham Region, the report said. Income support staff coming back to Durham DURHAM — People making initial calls about qualifying for income support will once again speak with someone in their own munici- palities. The Province has decided to return the intake screening units back to the individual municipalities as of June 16, six years after creating seven consolidated centres. Residents from Durham who wanted to see if they would qualify for Ontario Works (formerly welfare) spoke with a worker in Peterborough. “Staff feel that the return of the intake screening func- tion to local municipalities is a positive development with respect to client service,” the report said. New retail development considered DURHAM — The Region is considering an application for a new retail development that would add department, home improvement, grocery and other retail stores in east Bowmanville. AY T Corporation sub- mitted the application in December 2004, a report to Tuesday’s planning commit- tee said. The plan is for a 54-acre par- cel of farm land at Bennett Road and Hwy. 401, currently designated for employment. The Region’s official plan must be amended to allow the development. The major issue with the proposal is how it will impact the main shopping areas of Bowmanville and Newcastle, said Richard Szarek, a plan- ner for the Region. AYT must submit a retail impact study, along with hydrogeological and traffic studies. The Region will now process the application and make a decision at a later date. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, JANUARY 30, 2005 PAGE 15 P • Over 18 years experience in the entertainment industry • All inclusive packages to fulfill your needs & budget • A full list of equipment, lighting and effects • Ethnic music libraries & MCs To ll Free 1-866-220-5434Taking your event to the next level MIRAGE PRODUCTIONS LTD. Need proof? In the west, six of the nine teams lost just three games or fewer in the recently-completed regular season; seven had a goals against average under three. Ordanis acknowledged west- ern teams “could run roughshod” in the first round of the playoffs, which begins in a best-of-three for- mat Feb. 7. Each team crosses over to play a non-divisional opponent. Anderson, led by the goaltending of Jason Blanchard (four shutouts) and the scoring of third-year vet- eran Steve Rodger, will face Rich- ardson in a best-of-three first round series. Over in the west, St. Mary, the defending champion, and Picker- ing, last year’s runner-up, are both primed to go far again in the post- season, though the standings in- dicate divisional rivals Dunbarton, Ajax, Notre Dame and Uxbridge are all more than capable of the same. “A ny of those teams can beat anybody on any given day,” com- mented Dunbarton’s Bill Dalliday, noting one of his concerns will be to get his own team to adjust after a fairly long layoff. Lou Manserra has seen his Pick- ering team overcome a slow start to play some consistent hockey. The Trojans will take on the Port Perry Rebels with Manserra vowing he won’t let his team be fooled by the way the standings look. Meanwhile, with St. Mary, Mike Dion’s Monarchs lost just twice in regular season — to Ajax by a goal and to Notre Dame by two (with an empty-netter). The Monarchs face Henry Street in the opening round. “It’s very competitive,” Dion said of play in the west division. “I’m glad some of them get to beat up on each other.” For most teams, the opening round represents a chance to see a new opponent. During the season, teams played divisional opponents once each with the remaining two or three games against the other division. The McLaughlin-Notre Dame match-up is one exception. McLaughlin lost by one goal during the regular season. Coach Glenn Ross said it’s been the story of the season so far, with five of the team’s losses coming by one goal. “We lost five games by a goal and we were leading every one of them,” he said. “If we get a head of steam going we might be OK.” While it’s not entirely clear as to why there’s such a disparity be- tween the east and west divisions, Ordanis noted a number of east teams have lost quality veterans from previous years. Like Courtice Secondary, which has struggled through a rebuilding year after two strong seasons. Stal- wart defenceman Andrew Seargent is one of just four returning players on a team that has a pair of Grade 9 players and five in Grade 10. “We certainly have skilled indi- viduals,” commented Dave Chat- ten, one of the team’s three coaches. “But we have yet to put it together as a team.” Meanwhile, Port Perry has a young team as well, with only six seniors in total, yet has managed to remain competitive, said coach Tom Clark. “We’ve had a lot of close games this year,” he said. Records aside, though, looking ahead is a dangerous game to play, said the coach of Ajax, Courtice’s first-round opponent. “We’ve learned from that before,” said Craig Nemis. “We don’t look past anybody.” Eastdale Collegiate, second in the east, faces off against an All Saints team that faded after a strong start to the season. “We have to make a commitment to defensive hockey,” said Eastdale coach Josh French, whose team, led offensively by captain Jon Cregg, has demonstrated an ability to score goals but is having difficulty preventing them. The concerns seem to be re- versed for All Saints, who has a stingy defence, yet only 26 goals in 12 league games. New to the playoffs this year, the best two-of-three format has been expanded to all rounds (the first round was previously a first-to- three points format). Raiders midgets shocked by Shattucks in Silver Stick final Minnesotans earn double-overtime victory over defending champion Ajax-Pickering DURHAM — The Ajax-Pick- ering Raiders midget ‘AAA’ rep hockey team finished agonizingly close to repeating as champions of the International Silver Stick To urnament in Sarnia recently. Returning to the final for a second straight year, the Raiders battled the St. Mary’s Shattucks from Minnesota right down to the wire before dropping a 2-1 double-overtime decision. With virtually no time remain- ing in the second extra frame, the Minnesotans scored to end an exciting championship contest. The game was scoreless until Cody Pollard connected early in the third period on a pass from Ky le Neadles. The St. Mary’s Shattucks scored the equalizing marker with just more than two minutes remain- ing to send the game into over- time. Post-game ceremonies fol- lowed as Adam Bell, Robert Bent- ley, Scott Kirkaldy and Paul Kent of the Raiders were presented a commemorative banner. Alex Rombis was selected to the tournament all-star team along with Bentley, who also was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Facing Eastern Ontario league rival Barrie Colts in the semifi- nal, the Raiders jumped out to 4-0 lead early in the first period and hung on for a 5-3 win. Kirkaldy led the midget Raid- ers with a two-goal effort, while Brent Shearer, Darryl King and Derrick Gray added singles. Assists went to Kyle Stewart, Daniel Tremblay, King, Bell, Ryan Rinneard, Jeff Piilo and Bentley. The Raiders opened with a 3-1 win over the Mississauga Sena- tors. Rombis, Bentley and Kent scored, with assists to Rinneard, Bell, Kirkaldy, Piilo, Kyle Van de Bospoort and Gray. In Game 2 against the Toronto Yo ung Nats, the Raiders settled for a 2-2 tie, with Kent providing the equalizer with 2:25 remain- ing. Van de Bospoort opened the scoring. Pollard, Piilo and Kirkaldy re- corded assists. The Raiders played the U.S. west regional champions, Stover Stars from Kansas City, Missouri, in Game 3, earning a hard-fought 3-2 victory. Darren McCloy’s point shot late in the third proved to be the winner. Kent and Van De Bos- poort also scored, with assists to McCloy, Pollard and Andrew Sartain. The goaltending duo of David Blair and Christian Gaudette were outstanding, allowing only nine goals in five games. As finalists, the Raiders re- ceived an automatic invite back to Sarnia for the 2005-06 tourna- ment. Ian Fletcher, Tim Rinneard, Ed Hanna and Ed McCusker coach the Raiders. Think about it, if your monthly output is under control, come next winter you can go to a nice warm place with the money you have saved. If your debt load is either out of control, or getting to that point, act now. Do not wait until a serious problem arrives, because it may be too late. Of utmost importance is to keep your mortgage current. When a mortgage has to be re- placed when it is in arrears, it is far more diffi cult to obtain, and becomes far more costly in rate and terms. Consolidate now; it can save thousands in annual payments. Interest rates are probably at their lowest level they will be at this year, and now is the time to capitalize on them. The average monthly savings to our clients is in excess of $900. a month. (Remember this is net money) Prime fi rst and second mortgages are available to 100% of current market value, with good income and credit history. An annual tradition for the past 15 years, the Pickering Hockey Association offers its bantam ‘AA’ teams the oppor- tunity to travel to Europe to do battle with foreign hockey clubs. This year’s trip featured matches with teams from the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy and Germany, along with a tournament victory in the Czech Republic for the Pan- thers, who returned Jan. 6. Pickering posted a 5-2-1 over- all record. A 60-member entourage, made up of players, coaches and family members, flew to Prague Dec. 26, commencing their journey with a historic tour of the city as part of an educational component for the players. Two days later, the team travelled to Melnik to partici- pate in a three-team ‘Flying Puck’ tournament. The first game had Pickering downing HK Kralupy, 3-1. The second match, however, proved a heartbreaker as the Canadi- ans lost 2-1 to Junior Melnik. Nonetheless, Pickering man- aged to advance to the cham- pionship final, winning 4-1 over Kralupy. Ve nturing the next day by way of double-decker bus, the Canadians arrived in Pizek, Czech Republic to play IHC Pisek. Pickering led 2-0 at the end of the second period, but the Czechs scored early and late in the third period to end the affair 2-2. The Panthers then pro- ceeded to Salzburg, Austria, where they celebrated New Ye ar’s in a flurry of firecrack- ers. The team also toured the former Olympic venue, Inns- bruck, for a day of shopping and sightseeing. While in Salzburg, the Panthers played an outdoor match against Kitzbuhel, high atop the Alps. The Austrians scored first, but Pickering stemmed the attack with a 9-2 victory. On Jan. 2, the Panthers were in Vipiteno, Italy to play a Ca- nadian-coached Italian team, WSV Sterling, comprised of both 14- and 15-year-old players. Pickering lost 4-1 but played well against the much larger opposition. Two days later in Rosen- heim, Germany, Pickering was defeated 6-3 by the Star- bulls squad. The entourage stayed in Munich and were guided through a 90-minute tour of the Dachau concen- tration camp on the outskirts of the city. On the way back to Prague, the Panthers played a return game with IHC Pisek, and bolstered by the return of four regulars to the lineup, Pickering won 6-2. Coach Dale Lee said that despite the hectic pace and long trips, the boys were ex- cellent representatives for their country, both on and off the ice. “It was a great learning ex- perience for them,” he said in a release. “They played against some very good op- ponents while at the same time appreciating the culture and rich historical traditions of the four countries we vis- ited.” Panther bantams enjoy the sights, rack up wins in Europe get connected. to a career you want in as little as 6-12 months 1450 Kingston Rd.
