wake of reports

DURHAM — Durham Region-
al Police Chief Kevin McAlpine
called reporters to headquarters
Friday morning for a press con-
ference at which he said he could
tell them nothing.
The chief called the confer-
ence in response to a cascade
of calls from media throughout
Canada and the United States,
sparked by reports that a Picker-
ing woman has accused enter-
tainer Bill Cosby of sexual as-
sault.
The chief said that, in keeping
with policy, the service will not
confirm the identity of any of
the parties involved in the com-
plaint.
“It is not our place to discuss
any particulars of the matter in
any way, shape or form, as we
are not conducting the investiga-
tion,” Chief McAlpine said.
“We basically received a com-
plaint and forwarded the infor-
mation.”
The chief did confirm that on

Pickering hold up
contracts, costing
Durham thousands

DURHAM — Indecision about
where and how many public alert
sirens will be put up around Dur-
ham’s two nuclear plants is caus-
ing contract delays and costing
thousands.
The contracts have been signed
and the 46 sirens have been pur-
chased, but delays by Pickering
mean equipment is sitting in stor-
age — and racking up bills.
“Because there’s a deal with
having to store equipment, there
are storage costs,” said Ivan Ciuci-
ura, director of emergency man-
agement for the Region. “There’s
also a contract with a normal start
date that would have been quite
earlier.
“There could be costs associ-
ated with that.”
Details of the costs, such as how
much they amount to and who is
paying them, are part of in-cam-
era, private meetings at the Re-
gion.
The mounting bills are just part
of the complicated process sur-
rounding the ill-fated sirens, part
of a public safety system legislated
by the Province in 1999. The Re-
gion, with consent from the af-
fected lakeshore municipalities
of Pickering, Ajax and Clarington,
decided in 2001 on the siren sys-
tem, Mr. Ciuciura said. The Region
then purchased the sirens with
Ontario Power Generation picking
up the tab.
Pickering and its residents are
now adamantly against the 27 si-
rens, which are proposed for high-
density areas. The City is in the
midst of a peer review to see if
fewer sirens could be used in less

Future increases
to be tied to
unionized staff
By Danielle Milley
Staff Writer
PICKERING — The mayor
and councillors voted unani-
mously to give themselves a
raise Monday night.
The bylaw to tie the salary
of members of council to the
increases given to City staff was
included as part of 20 bylaws
on Monday night’s council
meeting agenda.
“This does deal with coun-
cil remuneration,” said Mayor
Dave Ryan as he pulled the
bylaw to be dealt with sepa-
rately.
“This is the first increase
since 2001 and reflects the
three per cent raises given to
City union staff,” he said.
With the changes, the mayor’s
salary increases from $60,000 to
$63,654 and the salary of coun-
cillors increases from $25,000
to $26,523, both effective Jan.
1, 2005. It represents a six per
cent increase, which is in line
with the last two staff raises.
Unionized City staff, who
reached a new deal in Novem-
ber, received a 3.5 per cent in-
crease in the first year of the
three-year contract (retroactive
to April 1, 2004) and will re-
ceive a three per cent raise in
2005 and 2006.
Starting next January and
each Jan. 1 after that, the an-
nual salary of the mayor and
councillors is to increase at the
same rate as unionized em-
ployees receive on April 1 of
the immediate preceding year.
Mayor Ryan said by making
these changes it ties council
remuneration to something ra-
tional.
“The public should feel com-
fortable that these things are
being done in a rational way
and not arbitrarily,” he said
Tuesday.
At the meeting, Ward 3 Re-
gional Councillor Rick Johnson
asked if the item had been ad-
vertised.
“Was this not to be adver-
tised so people could come out
and speak to it,” he said.
Under the Municipal Act, it
did not need to be advertised,
staff reported.
“I always felt that we should
be transparent in that process,”
Coun. Johnson said when
asked if he thought it should
have been advertised anyway.
He did point out it has only
been in the last few years that
council pay has gone from the
low teens to where it is today.
Mayor Ryan said the issue
was never hidden.
“It was on the agenda and
the agenda was on the web-
site,” he said.
The issue was also on the
agenda for council’s Dec. 17
strategic retreat, as reported in
a story in the News Advertiser.

University professor
using federal funding
to examine negative
effects on aquatic life
By Mike Ruta
Staff Writer
DURHAM — Doug Holdway is
on a spending spree that would
make most guys jealous.
The University of Ontario In-
stitute of Technology professor is
buying a four-wheel drive truck, a
boat and trailer, nets and the like.
And if you think he’s going fishing,
you’re partly right. Mr. Holdway
is studying the effects that brief
or pulse exposure to toxic com-
pounds has on aquatic life and
how to detect them— before a fish
or other creature goes belly up.
“This is the irony,” he says. “For
certain chemicals the effects can
be long-lasting, both for the indi-
vidual species and for the whole
ecosystem.”
Mr. Holdway’s research efforts
received a major boost this school
year when he earned a presti-
gious, Tier 1 Canada Research
Chair in Aquatic Toxicology from
the federal government. The sci-
ence professor is receiving a total
of $1.4 million over seven years,
plus $250,000 in infrastructure
funding.
The latter is paying for the truck
and other equipment he’ll need
to go out into the field, namely a
Durham Region river system he
has yet to choose.
When he’s not in the field, the
professor will spend a lot of time
at his wet lab, nearing comple-
tion at the university. The mil-
lion-dollar-plus lab is to contain
over 200 aquaria, including 12,
1,000 litre tanks. Groundwater,
hopefully there will be enough, he
notes, will travel through a series
of filters and temperature controls
to the aquaria. Fish, for example,
will be briefly exposed to toxicants
in an exposure tank, or a more
direct approach will see the stuff
injected directly into the fish.
“It’s going to be pretty bloody
fabulous,” Mr. Holdway enthuses
of the setup.
He says “a bunch” of the re-
search money will go back to the
university, since the administra-
tion agreed to create the lab for
him before, he notes, they knew
he was getting the research grant.
“They’ve been extremely sup-
portive,” Mr. Holdway says.
He explains there are a whole
variety of ways in which a pulse
exposure can occur. A quick spring
snow melt, for example, can send
water with high acidity and low
PH into a lake or stream in a mat-
ter of days.
“I’d like to know what sort of im-
pacts from our local region fish are
being exposed to at spring runoff
and if the activities are having a
significant effect on their ability to
reproduce,” he says of some of the
questions he hopes to answer.
Mr. Holdway’s research in large
part helped stop the use of the
insecticide methoxychlor two
decades ago. He explains it was
meant to be a DDT substitute,
used to kill black fly larvae in the
Athabaska and Saskatchewan
river systems. But while it did
break down quicker than DDT,
methoxychlor users didn’t realize
fish were much more sensitive to
it and it was having a long-term
effect on their reproductive be-
haviour.
Another component of his re-
search, he calls it “the icing on the
cake,” is to find a way of creating
real-time sensors to detect con-
taminants, so that a red flag could
be raised as soon as they enter a
water system.
“Imagine if you could just put a
sensor in your water pipe in your
house,” Mr. Holdway says, adding,
“if something was in the $50 to
$100 range you could sell millions
of them.”
Amiable, informative and en-
thusiastic, his expressions (such
as Good on ya! and No worries!)
betray the 17 years he spent work-
ing in Australia. But it’s not really
work for Mr. Holdway.
“It’s lots of fun,” he says.

PICKERING — Serge Rielau is
just fine with his home being lo-
cated in the Province’s Golden
Horseshoe Greenbelt.
“I want it,” he said. “I moved
to Greenwood for the nature, for
the rural living and the greenbelt
matches that.”
Mr. Rielau was one of 60 peo-
ple at a meeting Thursday after-
noon in the Greenwood Commu-
nity Centre, hosted by the City of
Pickering’s planning department.
It addressed how the greenbelt
plan affects the northeast area of
Pickering. (Another meeting was
held in the evening).
He has lived in what is known
as the Greenwood cluster, south
of the hamlet, for a year and a
half. He had been waiting to live
in the area for years because of its
rural setting. Mr. Rielau doesn’t
have a problem with the restric-
tions that will come if his proper-
ty is included in the final version
of the Province’s plan.
“I don’t mind,” he said. “It’s
something I would have done re-
sponsibly anyway so I don’t feel
impeded by it.”
All of the Greenwood cluster
and part of the hamlet have been
included in the draft greenbelt
plan, which was released in Oc-
tober. In discussions since, the
Greenwood and Area Residents
Association has said the majority
of its members want all of Green-
wood included, out to Salem
Road, while the Region of Dur-
ham wants just the entire hamlet
and cluster included.
Phil Mahon on the other hand
doesn’t want his property includ-
ed.
“There’s too many rules and
regulations,” said Mr. Mahon, a
resident of the cluster. “This is ex-
propriation without compensa-
tion, this is lack of due process.”
Although the details of what
it means to have a property in-
cluded in the greenbelt are still
vague, Steve Gaunt, senior plan-
ner with the City, said the restric-
tions would be fairly severe.
In an e-mail circulated to sev-
eral politicians, Mr. Mahon ex-
pressed frustrated at what he
believed those restrictions were,
including not being able to build
a garage or connect to urban ser-
vices if they become available.
Catherine Rose, a manager in
the planning department, point-
ed out that people who currently
live in areas designated as ag-
ricultural or rural already have
many restrictions on their prop-
erty.
Jeanette Wiles, like Mr. Rielau,
doesn’t mind the restrictions that
will come with her home being
included.
“From a rights point of view,
who likes somebody dictating to
them about what they can and
cannot do,” she said. “But in
terms of this piece of legislation,
it makes me feel more comfort-
able about living where I live.
Ms. Wiles has lived in Green-
wood since 1995.
“We live here because it is
picturesque... my house is sur-
rounded by forests,” she said. “It
is nice to think it is going to stay
that way.”
The planning department is
preparing a report for council
based on comments from the
public. The deadline for submis-
sions is Tuesday, Jan. 25. The
comment survey is available on-
line at www.cityofpickering.com.
The report goes to the Feb. 7
council meeting so members can
decide what feedback to send
to the Ministry of Municipal Af-
fairs before the plan becomes law
around March 9.

DURHAM — Justice could be
just a phone call away.
For the past 18 years, Durham
Region residents have turned to the
Crime Stoppers program to com-
bat crime in their communities.
The anonymous tip line has helped
Durham Regional Police crack
2,400 cases and make more than
2,500 arrests since 1986, according
to Constable Sherri Hughes, po-
lice co-ordinator of Crime Stoppers
here.
“People are taking responsibility
for the safety of their community,”
Const. Hughes said.
“They’re fed up with crime, and
they see Crime Stoppers as a safe
avenue to report it.”
Those citizens are showing no
signs of slowing down. In 2004,
Durham Regional Crime Stoppers
recorded 985 calls from tipsters, an
increase of 243 over 2003.
That’s a record for a program
that has become a part of the pub-
lic consciousness since its incep-
tion, Const. Hughes said.
January is Crime Stoppers
Month, a celebration of the pro-
gram, which was begun in New
Mexico in 1976 with a simple
premise: offering cash rewards to
anonymous tipsters for informa-
tion that leads to arrests in criminal
investigations.
The concept remains unchanged
today, Const. Hughes said. Callers
to the Crime Stoppers line in Dur-
ham are assigned a number, and
information
they provide
is passed on
to police of-
ficers; if the
information
results in
an arrest,
the caller is
eligible for
a cash re-
ward.
A constant
over the years has been preserva-
tion of caller anonymity. It is essen-
tial to the integrity of the program,
Const. Hughes said.
What has changed somewhat
is the way citizens are using the
tip line: The frequency with which
they’re calling in tips about crimes
that have yet to happen and is-
sues in neighbourhoods — such
as marijuana grow homes — has
increased over time, she said.
The tip line does, in some ways,
provide an answer to the obstacle
faced by people who are concerned
about activity in their neighbour-
hoods but are reluctant about going
to police, Const. Hughes said.
“For whatever the reason, people
aren’t comfortable about getting
involved,” she said. “They now
have this avenue to share the infor-
mation they have.”
Interestingly, not many people
who call in tips follow up to collect
rewards. Const. Hughes said re-
wards are collected by only about a
third of the callers who are eligible
for cash.
“It tells me people are motivated
by more than a cash reward,” she
said. “That people are interested in
making their community safer.
“I like to consider Crime Stop-
pers the pioneer crime prevention
program.”
Durham Regional Crime Stop-
pers, which is governed by a board
of civilian directors, entered 2005
with ambitions to continue to raise
the profile of the program and
make inroads in high school com-
munities.

stoppers, call 1-800-222-8477.

intrusive areas, such as along Hwy.
401, said Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan.
But the City is resigned that some-
thing has to be done.
“We feel that the solution that’s been
put forward is not the optimal solu-
tion,” Mayor Dave Ryan said, calling
the sirens “archaic technology.”
“But we understand the equipment
has been purchased and we want to
use it to the full potential.”
The type of technology will not
change, Mr. Ciuciura said: the sirens
must be used. And Pickering did ap-
prove the sirens back in 2001, he
added.
Clarington Mayor John Mutton,
whose municipality will see 17 sirens
installed on mostly farmland, said the
Region may look at going ahead with-
out Pickering and sending them the
bill to break the contract — estimated
at $1 million.
The Province refused to say whether
Pickering could be penalized in any
way for the delays.
“The Province prefers to work in
a collaborative way with municipali-
ties rather than being hard-handed,”
said Bruce O’Neill, a spokesman for
the Ministry of Community Safety and
Correctional Services.
Mayor Ryan said he hopes the two
sides will have a solution within the
month.

Police in Cheltenham Township are
being equally cautious with the dis-

A spokesman in Chief John Norris’s

the time being.
The story was broken Thursday by
an NBC television affiliate in Philadel-

Watch for these names
somewhere in the future
W orking in community newspa-
pers brings you in contact with
some pretty unique people.
This week six remarkable young Ajax
and Pickering teens dropped by the office
and it’s a pretty good bet you’ll be hear-
ing more about them in the years ahead.
They are Afzal Habib, Danielle Bent-
ley, Amanda Gomes, Boyd Reid, Laura
Newton and Ronald Nettey. And they
are Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year
Award nominees.
It’s no easy task to be a nominee
for the award either. Each of these
young adults is making a difference in
the community and in the lives of the
people around them.
It was funny to meet them in person,
though, after reading the nominations
their friends and families completed.
Each of them had a good sense of
humour and shared a laugh as they
waited to have their pictures taken for
a News Advertiser story.
Some of them go the extra mile for
neighbours and friends, unselfishly
helping out. Others are excelling in
several areas of school and sports.
The common denominator is they
all, at a relatively young age, are willing
to think beyond themselves, to think of
the world around them.
I like to believe these are the kind
of people who will be our business,
community and political leaders some
day.
With down-to-earth values, they em-
body the type of people we need in
positions of leadership.
But maybe that’s too much pres-
sure to put on them now. Let’s just
hope they keep up the good work and
cross our fingers that one, or even
all of them, receive the nod from the
judges this year. The Ontario Com-
munity Newspapers Association pres-
ents OJCY awards to recognize the out-
standing achievements of the young
people in our communities.
The winning nominations are ex-
pected to be announced early in Feb-
ruary.
If you know of an outstanding young
person in the community, well it’s too
late — for this year anyway. But keep it
in mind for next year.
If you know a young person who is
consistently making a difference in the
lives of those around them, is involved
or leading noteworthy activities, check
out the OCNA website at ocna.org and
click on the awards link.
Maybe you already know one of next
year’s nominees.

EDITORIAL
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Waiting for the
rest of the region
Let’s hope transit plan naysayers
open their eyes to possibilities
L et the politicking begin.
It appears the next three weeks will be interesting
and busy for Durham politicians as they try to change
votes on the controversial regional transit bylaw.
At We dnesday’s meeting the decision to vote on the re-
gion-wide transit system was deferred for three weeks by Os-
hawa Mayor John Gray so that the deadlock could be broken
and the plan could move forward.
All it requires is one of the dissenting municipalities — Os-
hawa, Whitby, Uxbridge or Brock — to change their vote and
the system could be up and running by this time next year.
It’s a big if, though.
Region-wide transit is an idea whose time has come, and
should have been pursued. Some municipalities, like Scu-
gog, were concerned about certain aspects of the plan, but
voted in favour of the idea to get the wheels in motion. In Os-
hawa, they too had questions, but instead of saying ‘Yes’ and
then hashing out their problems with the initial proposal,
councillors elected to put conditions on their approval. This
caveat, in effect, put the transit system on hold because, for
the triple majority needed to pass, there couldn’t be any con-
ditions on the bylaw. A triple majority at the regional level
means the majority of regional councillors must approve the
bylaw, along with five of Durham’s eight municipalities total-
ling 51 per cent.
With the largest municipality voting against it during the
wee hours of the morning Tuesday, the dagger seemingly
was plunged into the $39-million plan. However, Mayor
Gray, who voted in favour of it in Oshawa, has the oppor-
tunity to get his council on board and save this bylaw from
dying on the floor. It’s also a chance for him, and the mayors
from Whitby, Brock and Uxbridge, to show real leadership by
getting their councils on board.
For years the people of Durham have been clamouring for
better roads and improved transit and this is the perfect op-
portunity to begin to truly deliver the service.
It would mean bringing together the current transit sys-
tems under one umbrella organization in Durham. This type
of merger has worked with the Durham Regional Police force
and could also work with transit. All it takes is some back-
bone by the people elected to do things for the good of the
community, even if that community extends beyond your
own municipality.
The question is which municipality will save the day?
If teens get the vote, they should
face tougher criminal penalties
To the editor:
Re: ‘Holland’s bill gains momentum,’ Dec. 24.
If Mark Holland wants to give 16-year-olds the right to vote
and therefore the right to have input into how their society is
governed, then those same 16-year-olds should be held ac-
countable to that society.
A reduction in the voting age from 18 to 16 should be ac-
companied by a similar reduction in the age of the Youth
Criminal Justice Act.

Would it surprise you to know that in
Canada, more than one million chil-
dren live below the poverty line defined
by Statistics Canada? Or that 50 per
cent of all food bank users are children?
Yet, poverty is not the only reason for
inadequate nutrition. The fact is that
Canada’s children are going to school
hungry regardless of where they live or
their socio-economic status. Statistics
show that more than 40 percent of
children don’t eat breakfast on a daily
basis.
But not having food to eat is just one
part of the child nutrition issue in
Canada. Recently, the focus on chil-
dren’s health and well-being has shifted
to poor eating habits accompanied by
inactive lifestyles and the overwhelm-
ing increase in childhood obesity. A
recent article in the academic journal
Appetites stated, “Children who
replace proper breakfast with chocolate
bars and carbonated drinks have the
reaction levels of a 70 year old by the
end of the morning.” Poor nutrition
affects all walks of life.
Research has shown that a child’s
behaviour,learning capacity,
cognitive performance and school
attendance are negatively impacted
by inadequate nutrition.
Kids go to school hungry for a variety
of reasons. The time constraints of
modern living often don’t leave enough
time for meals, particularly in the
morning. Some children may not have
time to eat because they have to wake
up early for a long bus ride to school.
For others, their parents may leave for
work before they even wake up, so they
grab a chocolate bar on the go thinking
that is the way to start off their day.
Some parents may have to compromise
the quality or quantity of food because
of financial concerns.
Research has shown that a child’s
behaviour, learning capacity, cognitive
performance and school attendance are
negatively impacted by inadequate
nutrition. When a child’s body has no
food, their brain lacks the fuel neces-
sary to start their day off on the right
track, alert and ready to concentrate at
school.
Breakfast For Learning is working to
change the face of child nutrition in
Canada. By supporting the funding of
breakfast, lunch and snack programs in
schools all across Canada, the
Foundation has helped to provide more
than 175 million nourishing meals to
children since its inception in 1992.
School-based nutrition programs pro-
vide all children with an opportunity to
receive a nutritious meal in a support-
ive environment that encourages
responsible behaviour and provides a
forum for them to learn, to share and
be nurtured.

No more excuses……it’s time to get healthy. A new fitness
program has come to town that will bring positive changes
to your weight and self-image, and most importantly,
improve your health and quality of life! The first of it’s it
kind in the Durham Region,JET 30 Minute Fitness for
Men is revolutionizing the way men exercise. A spin-off
from circuit training systems like Sisters PACE, and Curves
for Women,JET is offering the same amazing results, but
for MEN ONLY.JET offers a challenging 30 minute, full
body,resistance circuit training workout,in a non-intimidat-
ing environment. The pre-determined circuit program takes
the guesswork out of your exercise routine, and allows the
time to focus on the results you want! Qualified JET staff are
available to assist the members at all times, at no additional
cost. Use of JET’s hydraulic resistance machines creates no
undue strain on the joints, since the amount of resistance is
relative to the level of effort applied by the user. Further,
because of the dual action hydraulic cylinders, each piece of
resistance equipment works opposing muscle groups, result-
ing in a more efficient workout. It’s designed to be safe, sim-
ple, and effective for men of all ages and fitness levels, who
are seeking greater strength, muscle tone and physical defi-
nition.JET also offers sport specific team programs, and is
currently training the Pickering Fusion U-17 Boys soccer
club on a weekly basis. It’s about time for a program in our
own back yard that caters to men with hectic schedules, who
deserve a healthier and more physically active lifestyle.
Owners of JET for Men, Patricia and Bill Bailey are
extremely excited to provide such an extraordinary workout
program.
JET will be holding two
Grand Open House dates:
S aturday, January 29th and
Sunday, January 30th
from 8am-4pm.
Don’t miss out on the Free Massages, Free Membership
Draws, demonstrations on the circuit, and MORE!
Here are a few facts about detoxification people should be more aware of…
The liver filters blood (almost 2 quarts every minute). When the liver is overbur-
dened and doesn’t do this well the filtration system is not efficient.
The liver manufactures bile (about 1 quart per day) this bile is stored in the gall
bladder for secretion. In cases where the gall bladder has been removed,so has the
storage facility for the bile, and an additional job is placed on the liver. If you have
had your gall bladder surgically removed, then certain digestive enzymes could
prove to be invaluable! Bile emulsifies fats and fat soluble vitamins and assists in
excretion of toxins with the aid of fiber. If we are lacking fiber we may re-absorb
toxins into the blood stream.
People concerned with losing weight should be extra cautious as they
need to breakdown fat which is where a lot of the toxins are stored, and
this adds an additional burden to the detoxification process.
Therefore, people that need to lose a lot of fat should be guided professionally to
ensure their health doesn’t deteriorate.
How well a person detoxifies can be somewhat understood by their ability to with-
stand things in their environment such as house dust, tobacco, sugar, alcohol, per-

fume, and caffeine. These are some of the powerful environ-
mental influences that can negatively impact our health by
75%. Some individuals are better able to detoxify than oth-
ers, and we should never compare one person to another as
each one of us is bio-chemically unique. The approach to
detoxification for each person will be different as well.
Detoxification happens in stages and sometimes difficulty can
be experienced in the 1st or 2nd stage. Professional products
exist that facilitate the different stages of detoxification. These
products and the practice of good lifestyle habits are essential
requirements to combat disease, and return a person to a bet-
ter state of health. Recommendations should be made for
each individual’s situation and preference, rather than pur-
chasing a random detox kit from a store. The body has to be
prepared to cleanse properly and this preparation is necessary
to avoid stressing the system and experiencing unpleasant side
effects. Lastly, Detoxification is nutrient dependent, so an
assessment for nutritional deficiencies is a great place to
begin. This can be achieved through a Hair Mineral Analysis
laboratory report. Also consider Food Sensitivity Testing to
expose and eliminate foods that cause reactions and add more
stress to the liver. If you want more information about the
detoxification method that is right for you and steps you can
take to be on your way to a healthier you, Karen Steward is a

Do you know what it feels like to be totally frustrated? You know that
feeling where you know what you should be doing but you just can’t seem
to do it? That terrible feeling that builds up inside and almost makes you
tingle with frustration. That feeling that tells you that what you want is
beyond your control. That feeling of frustration that builds and builds to
the point where you start to get upset with yourself for not doing what
you know you should do. It almost becomes so overwhelming that you
want to give up. Now that is frustrating, isn’t it?
There is an old saying,“If you always do what you have always done, then
you will always get what you have always gotten”. Are you fed up with
being fed up? Do you believe it is time to start doing what you know
you should do? Do you want to make it as easy as possible to apply the
skills you already have? If you are saying yes, yes, yes, then now is the time for you to reprogram your
mind.
Reprogramming your mind is all about using the full powers of Hypnosis, Meditative Conditioning

your self talk you change your life.

you knew you should do to get the results you desired?
Maybe even finding it easy to take action? As you think about

That’s what reprogramming your mind is all about.
Hypnosis, Meditative Conditioning, and Emotional Clearing

Region dealing
with problems
DURHAM — While the-$14.5-
million above-ground parking ga-
rage at regional headquarters will
one day hold 800 vehicles, its con-
struction is causing parking chaos.
It was a nightmare to find park-
ing for Wednesday’s regional coun-
cil meeting, with hundreds of park-
ing spots dug up while the garage is
being built on the southwest corner
of regional headquarters at Ross-
land Road and Garden Street in
north Whit-
by.
Con-
struction
workers
building
both the ga-
rage and the
new head-
quarters are
competing
with region-
al and court
staff for spots. EllisDon, which is
constructing both buildings, will
soon make a temporary gravel
parking lot for its workers in the
northwest corner of the site, said
Wo rks Commissioner Cliff Curtis.
“Parking will be tight until the
garage is built,” he said. “Until then,
we’re going to have a problem.”
That problem is exacerbated on
jury selection days, and it will be
difficult if people start moving into
the new headquarters in the early
summer, he added.
The garage is not scheduled to
open until Aug. 31.

St. Mary reaps hoops revenge
Sean Maingot’s late
bucket lifts Monarchs
past Dunbarton
By Shannon Boodram
Special to the News Advertiser
PICKERING — St. Mary Mon-
archs paid a visit to Dunbarton Spar-
tans’ home court for a much-an-
ticipated second meeting between
the schools’ senior boys’ basketball
teams on Thursday.
The battle of the Whites Road
schools was close throughout,
and the teams delivered five ac-
tion-packed quarters before start-
ing Monarchs’ guard Sean Maingot
sunk a critical shot to give St. Mary a
narrow 73-71 overtime victory.
In the teams’ last meeting in
December, the Spartans defeated
the Monarchs by the skin of their
teeth in a one-point win. This time
around, both teams were prepared
to fight. At the end, it was a tough,
but critical, victory for the Mon-
archs, who improved their Lake
Ontario Secondary School Athletics
(LOSSA) league record to 6-3.
St. Mary head coach Mike Gor-
densky expected the game would
be a hard-fought one, as is the norm
between the two city rivals.
“A nytime that St. Mary and Dun-
barton play each other, it’s always
a close game. The schools are two
blocks apart, naturally there’s a lot of
pride on the line,” said Gordensky.
The fourth quarter mirrored the
others as the battle for the lead con-
tinued throughout the entire eight
minutes. In the final 15 seconds St.
Mary led 61-60, with starting for-
ward Duane Howard having posses-
sion of the ball. Howard was fouled
and sunk both free throws to give
the Monarch’s a three-point cush-
ion. With seven seconds to go Dun-
barton regained possession and mi-
raculously delivered a three-point
buzzer shot to tie the game at 63-63
and send it into overtime.
In the extra quarter, the Monarchs
and Spartans fought hard for the
victory but with a minute to go the
teams were deadlocked at 71-71. As
the clock dwindled down to the final
seconds, Maingot made a long shot
to put St. Mary in the lead where
they remained until the buzzer gave
closure to the exhilarating match-
up.
The teams got off to a slow start
as neither was able to break the
other’s zone defense to get a good
look at the basket. At the end of the
first half, Dunbarton held a tenu-
ous 31-29 lead. After the half, the
players resumed play with height-
ened determination and turned the
scoreboard into a tipping scale as
the lead teetered back and forth.
Despite both sides’ strong attempts
to pull away from the other, the third
ended with a Monarchs up by a
point.
Dunbarton’s Jovain Wilson was
the game’s lead scorer with 20
points.
With exams commencing in most
schools this week, senior boys’ bas-
ketball action will be on a brief hia-
tus until the weekend of Feb. 3, when
St. Mary will host the fourth annual
News Advertiser St. Mary Classic.
Although Dunbarton (4-4, league)
will not be joining the action, the
Monarchs will compete against 15
other teams, including the Picker-
ing High School Trojans, who are
undefeated in LOSSA league play,
as well as Toronto powerhouse, the
Oakwood Collegiate Barons, who’ve
been consistently ranked in the top
10 in the province this season.
NOTES: In earlier LOSSA junior
boys’ basketball action, St. Mary de-
feated Dunbarton 56-36. In other
senior boys’ action the Picker-
ing High Trojans defeated Ajax’s J.
Clarke Richardson Storm 84-48.

DURHAM’S LARGEST
Pickering grounds
Burlington Eagles
for tourney’s
consolation title
PICKERING — The
Pickering Panthers Dalar
Contracting atom ‘AA’ rep
hockey team soared over
the Burlington Eagles to
take the consolation title
at the 47th Peterborough
Lift Lock Tournament last
weekend.
The prestigious tour-
nament attracted more
than 100 atom teams from
across the province.
In the consolation game,
the Panthers grounded
Burlington 4-3, with Jef-
fery Heard scoring the
game winner in the final
minutes of the third pe-
riod.
Blair Williams put the
Panthers on the score-
board first. The Panthers
went on to add goals by
John Milonas and Liam
Sopher.
Adding assists were An-
drew Thomson, Jeremy
Davis and Anthony Novak.
An outstanding game by
goaltender Andrew Polley
helped lead his team.
Pickering faced off
against the Willowdale
Blackhawks in the semi-
final game, winning 3-2
to earn a shot at the con-
solation championship.
An awesome display of
goaltending by Mitchell
Sora took care of the de-
fensive end of the game.
Michael Spataro, Thom-
son and Williams were the
goal scorers, with assists
to Milonas, Heard, Novak
and Williams.
Pickering opened the
tournament with a con-
vincing 8-4 win over a
physical Etobicoke Majors
squad.
Heard opened the scor-
ing at the 28-second mark
of the first period, which
opened the floodgates for
the Panthers.
Thomson led the of-
fence with a hat trick and
two assists. Novak, Sopher,
Williams and Cory Wells
each added single mark-
ers. Davis, Milonas, Spa-
taro, Williams, Wells and
Heard drew assists.
The Panthers suffered
their lone loss to the 25-0-1
North Toronto team by a 5-
0 count, despite the defen-
sive efforts of Liam Ready
and Cameron Elwood.
North Toronto would
eventually win the tourna-
ment championship.
In the final round-robin
game, Pickering faced the
Stoney Creek Warriors and
handed them a lopsided
7-1 loss.
Josh Grant led the way
with two goals and an as-
sist, with singles to from
Novak, Milonas, Williams
and Steven Hann. The
other scorer wasn’t report-
ed.
Spataro, Milonas, Novak,
Heard and Sopher all con-
tributed assists.
An ailing Aiden Masse
was unable to play in the
tournament.
The Panthers (18-7-3
overall) will now play the
Peterborough Nationals
in the first round of the
OMHA playdowns.
Mike Thomson coaches
the team, assisted by Phil
Morgan and Bill Grant. The
trainers are Tony Novak
and Denis Masse. The
manager is Patty Grant.

FIGHT THE WINTER BLUES
The best way to get through this winter is to
get some fi nancial peace of mind, which in turn
will provide a great spring and summer. Think
about it, if your monthly output is under control,
come next winter you can go to a nice warm place
with the money you have saved.
If your debt load is either out of control, or
getting to that point, act now. Do not wait until
a serious problem arrives, because it may be too
late. Of utmost importance is to keep your mortgage current. When a mortgage has to be re-
placed when it is in arrears, it is far more diffi cult to obtain, and becomes far more costly in rate
and terms.
Consolidate now; it can save thousands in annual payments. Interest rates are probably at
their lowest level they will be at this year, and now is the time to capitalize on them. The average
monthly savings to our clients is in excess of $900. a month. (Remember this is net money)
Prime fi rst and second mortgages are available to 100% of current market value, with
good income and credit history. Prime fi rst mortgages are 1.3% below posted market rates. Pri-
vate fi rst and second mortgages are available for those clients that can’t quite fi t into the normal
lending stream, at competitive rates and terms.
At Central Funding Group we are committed to providing you with Fast Professional
service, with your fi nancial requirements being our primary end result.
Till next time

The team which is sponsored by Nigel Timal & For-

two division. They are currently training
and playing in an indoor league over the
winter in preparation for next year’s
outdoor season.
