Hospital chief upset by ‘unreasonable’ decision By Danielle Milley Staff Writer AJAX — The Province has shut out Rouge Valley Health System from additional funding to help balance its budget. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced on Monday a one-time $200 million transition fund for Ontario hospi- tals, but Rouge Valley’s Ajax-Pick- ering and Scarborough sites won’t see a dollar. Hume Martin, Rouge Valley’s president and chief executive of- ficer, was upset by the news. “Clearly Rouge Valley received no additional funding and I be- lieve that decision was unreason- able,” he said Wednesday. He said he believes the deci- sions on which hospitals received funding was arbitrary. “Rouge Valley has made ex- treme progress in bringing down its deficit... I fail to understand why there was no additional fund- ing for Rouge Valley,” he said. According to a ministry release, 32 hospitals “who have financial difficulties but are working to be- come more efficient” were reward- ed with $65 million, $5 million went to reward balanced hospi- tals, $19 million went to “small rural hospitals that have small op- erating bases from which to find efficiencies,” and $20 million went Bitter pill for Pickering hospital ✦ See Hospital page 4 Students get a read on minister Kennedy, Argos bring guests to Pickering to deliver school message By Mike Ruta Staff Writer PICKERING — Nicholas Gur- persaud likes to read, everything from newspapers to mystery and horror stories. Joe Brown, of the Durham-head- quartered International Aid and Co- operation Organization (IACO), asked for financial and moral support at We dnesday’s council meeting, as he heads to the ravaged area next week. The Region had already promised $40,000 to a Durham-wide tsunami relief fund, but a quick vote by council added an extra $5,000 to the IACO. Mr. Brown pointed out that any Ca- nadian donations to the IACO will let them access the billions flowing in to other international aid organizations. Province hiring consultant for courthouse tender DURHAM — Regional Chairman Roger Anderson had some news “for those of you who might have thought the courthouse announcement wasn’t real.” A consultant is being hired by the Province to oversee the bidding process for the new Durham Region courthouse, Mr. Anderson said at Wednesday’s coun- cil meeting. The Province has once again promised a new facility for Durham, this one to be opened by 2008 or 2009. Mr. Anderson said the move to hire the consultant was made within 10 to 12 days of Attorney General Michael Bryant’s visit to the Region on Dec. 15. Ajax-Pickering hospital happy with $3.5m donation DURHAM — Rouge Valley Health System executives Wednesday thanked the Region for a $3.5-million donation toward the Ajax site’s new emergency ward. Gord Simmonds, chairman of the hospital’s fundraising campaign, called the donation the largest gift ever received by the foundation. The hospi- tal’s goal is to raise $13.7 million for the Ajax-Pickering hospital on Harwood Aven ue. Durham briefs JANUARY 21, 2005 Officials confident of approval By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer PICKERING — Ontario Power Generation officials are hoping to get a five-year operating licence for the ‘A’ side of the Pickering nucle- ar station. John Coleby, site vice- president of Pickering A, said the company has sub- mitted a request with its federal regulator for a lon- ger licence period. “Last time we got a two- year licence. I’m going for a five-year-licence and I ex- pect to get one,” Mr. Coleby told the Community Advi- sory Committee (CAC) on Tuesday. The company is seeking a longer licence even though two of the reactors, Units 2 and 3, have been in a laid- up state since late 1997. Unit 4 is operating at full power and Unit 1 is sched- uled to be back online in the fall. The current licence ex- pires at the end of June. Mr. Coleby said the Cana- dian Nuclear Safety Com- mission would have to give OPG approval before Units 2 or 3 are restarted, and both would have to under- go extensive refurbishment before returning to service. The CNSC has to licence Units 2 and 3 “because they have fuel in them and they have heavy water in them. The licence says they have to stay in the Guaranteed Shutdown State.” The first hearing date is Feb. 24, with the second May 20. Anyone wanting to comment on the relicens- ing, either for or against, can submit their comments to the CNSC by April 19. Mr. Coleby questioned if the CAC would submit a letter to the regulator about the relicensing. “It’s not for me to tell you to support the relicensing. I’d like you to talk about what the committee does,” he said. “One of the big things the commission likes to know about is how we deal with the community.” Committee members were concerned about maintaining the group’s im- partiality. “OPG in the last seven or eight years has been more forthcoming with informa- tion on the plant,” Al Good- all stated. “We could say they’ve been open with us, but we are impartial. For us to say yea or nay isn’t right.” “Talk about what the com- mittee does,” Mr. Coleby replied. “You’re a useful sounding board for us. “I’d appreciate what you can do, even if it’s just to say what you do.” CAC member Lloyd Mur- ray noted OPG has “set up a process to try to involve the public as much as possible. Any issue that’s brought up, they’ve satisfied our curios- ity. I think we feel comfort- able with responses we’re getting.” The committee plans to draft a letter outlining what it does, while maintaining its impartiality. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, JANUARY 21, 2005 PAGE 3 A/P Maritime Travel - Pickering Ad 4.562" x 5.35" January 21 and 23, 2005 Join us at this exceptional presentation given by Jovanka Mrdja, Globus Tour Director, and get the inside track on these worry-free, fabulous vacations! Mr. Martin said Rouge Valley is facing a projected $1.5 to $2 million deficit for the 2004-05 budget year, which ends March 31, despite taking strides to find savings, including sharing some ad- ministrators with the Lakeridge Health Corporation. “We’re working diligently to find every dollar of savings we can without eroding the level of services we offer,” he said. “We’re working very hard on reducing administration costs.” The hospital was able to balance its budget last year. Mr. Martin questioned why Rouge Valley didn’t receive money and said he was told it was because the hospital has room to improve. “I don’t understand,” he said. “I just don’t understand.” The provincial release went on to say that the ministry is going to continue to work with Rouge Valley, along with all hospitals that didn’t receive funding, “to help them become more efficient.” Dan Strasbourg, spokesman for the ministry, wouldn’t explain specifi- cally why Rouge Valley didn’t receive money. “We’re confident that we’ll be able to find more efficiencies by working collaboratively with the hospitals,” he said. Mr. Strasbourg added the ministry recognizes the efforts of Rouge Valley and others. “There’s no question that hospitals across Ontario have worked very hard to bal- ance their bud- gets and some still haven’t,” he said. Mr. Martin said he would be discussing the decision with local MPPs. “I still fail to view this as fair treat- ment of Rouge Valley,” he said. He added Rouge Valley has to deal with many challenges other hospitals don’t, including two different public health teams, many different mu- nicipalities and two different ministry teams (central and central east). “We have challenges and I don’t believe the ministry has considered them. “I’m really upset, staff will be frus- trated by this,” he said. “This will bring into serious doubt the support of the government.” Hume Martin sportsdurhamregion.com Just one more way to get your news thanks to your friends at NEWS ADVERTISER ✦ Hospital from page 1 Hospital CEO ‘really upset’ by Province’s funding denial and enjoy it more. To help encourage boys to pick up a book, Education Minister Gerard Kennedy visited the Pickering school Wednesday. In addition to local MPP Wayne Arthurs, he brought along Toronto Argonauts Tony Miles and Randy Srochenski, and each took a turn speaking to stu- dents and reading from a story. “They’re here because they want to help, and they want your help, to get a mes- sage across,” Mr. Kennedy told the Grade 4 to 6 stu- dents, referring to the foot- ball players. “And the mes- sage is, we all need to do better at reading.” He told students that to achieve anything in life, reading is an important skill to help you get there. The school guests read from the book, Jeremiah Learns to Read, and three students pitched in to finish the story. “It felt exciting because you get to meet someone on the top of the government; it’s a special thing that hap- pened to me,” said Grade 4 student and reader Maya Cheaib, of the minister visit- ing her school. She likes mysteries and fantasy stories, is a big sports fan, and agreed wholeheartedly with the education minister’s mes- sage, encouraging everyone to read more, describing it as “a great pastime.” Nicholas says it was an honour to help read the story. “I felt really good being chosen to read,” he says. “I was really nervous at first, but it turned out to be really easy.” The minister asked the students why girls read more than boys. Maya be- lieves that perhaps girls like using their imagination more compared to guys, who seem more pre-occu- pied with electronics and games as opposed to books. Nicholas agreed with Maya when she said boys think they’re cool when they don’t read. He says boys should take the time to search for something they would like to read. The ministry recently released a teaching guide, ‘Me Read? No Way,’ aimed especially at boys. It is also sponsoring a symposium on boys’ literacy next week in To ronto. Mr. Kennedy cited provincial test results from 2003/04 that show 48 per cent of Grade 3 boys met the provincial standard in read- ing, compared to 59 per cent of girls. The gap increases later in elementary school, as the same test results indi- cate that 51 per cent of boys and 65 per cent of girls met the standard of a ‘B’ grade or better. “We’re not saying girls are smarter; we’re saying girls like to read more,” Mr. Sro- chenski told students. Mr. Kennedy presented school principal Silvia Pe- terson with a football signed by the Argos, coach Mike ‘Pinball’ Clemons and Pre- mier Dalton McGuinty. In turn, he received a Super Reader certificate and a pic- ture of a boy and a girl read- ing. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, JANUARY 21, 2005 PAGE 5 A/P L a s t M o n t h s W i n n i n g N u m b e r 5 0 0 9 4 1 Join This Group Of Progressive Local Business Who Have Already Signed Up As Advertisers In The Bonuspak Envelope Eric Gawley Wenda Allen Ltd. Yo u’ve raised tens of thousands of dollars in your schools to help the survivors of the Asian tsunami disaster. Yo u’ve shown that you care about peo- ple halfway around the world, setting an example for everyone in Durham. It wasn’t about receiving accolades, of course, but take a bow anyway. Yo ung students and old, on recent school visits I’ve been tremendously impressed by their empathy and gener- ousity. As John Morrison, the principal of Anderson CVI in Whitby told me in an e-mail, “The capacity of students to not only understand the gravity of this disaster, but to also respond quickly and generously on behalf of their fellow human beings, is another measure of the quality of youth that we have in our education system.” Proud principals and teachers have been e-mailing and calling to describe what their school was up to. Occasion- ally, they’ve referred to the general im- pression some have that young people are always up to no good and too self- centred to care about others. Of course it’s not true, and students like Ryan Delaney are a prime example of the wonderful young people in Durham. Here’s a Grade 5 student who got $50 for Christmas, money he could have spent on a lot of things. Instead, he donated the money, all of it, to the fundraiser at his school. Asked why, Ryan replied, “I thought I really didn’t need it.” He chose a great word there, need. Compared to the pressing needs of the countless thousands who require drink- ing water, shelter, medicine and food, well, there’s no comparison. Many schools rushed to raise as much as they could before Jan. 11, the deadline for the federal government to match contributions. A movement is now underway to try and have that deadline extended as schools and oth- ers are still raising money. What’s amazing is that the schools had already been collecting money, food and toys for their holiday fund- raisers. At Ajax High School, for ex- ample, the annual toy drive just before Christmas generated over $10,000. One would think there would be a fundrais- ing hangover, if you will, given that the tsunami struck the Indian Ocean na- tions immediately after all those school efforts. There was no hangover — teach- ers, students and their parents at the Ajax school raised $6,350 in time for the Jan. 11 deadline. Well done. You are inspiring. Mike Ruta’s column ap- pears every third Friday. E-mail mruta@durhamregion.com. Students are a real inspiration Mike Ruta staff writer EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR Find ways to cut the budget hike I t should come as a surprise to no one that Pickering will have a tax increase this year. However, you can’t blame homeowners if they complain about a hike that could be as much as 8.8 per cent if early estimates bear out. The City is still crunching the numbers from all of its de- partments, but the roads department is where the increase is being credited for the most need for more spending over last year. Infrastructure needs include projects for improvements to several roads in Pickering this year and even with $1.95 million earmarked for priorities and $3.5 million for external subdivision work, some council members were still disap- pointed. Whether it’s converting rural roads to asphalt or getting to roadwork that’s been deferred for years now, it’s clear they would like to spend even more. Staff offered a low estimate of a 6.8 per cent increase, but added fixed costs on many budget commitments can’t be changed, so don’t expect the budget to come in any lower than that, said Gil Paterson, Pickering’s director of corporate services and treasurer. However, let’s hope better news arrives in the weeks ahead as the budget deliberations continue leading up to the 2005 tax rate being set in early April. One of the fixed costs the City must bear includes the cost of its politicians, an item that was increased this week. Although members submit that the six per cent raise they voted them- selves reflects a combined amount to catch up from last year, when they didn’t increase salaries, it just doesn’t sit well. As we’ve said in previous years, council members knew the salary when they took the job and voting themselves retroac- tive raises is not a popular or fiscally responsible move at any time. Council members are entitled to raises, but keep it in line with staff increases and decline the back pay. In a city that’s seen tax increases, at times substantial in- creases, over the past several years, we expect council to find a way to keep any further necessary tax hikes to the bare mini- mum. Council should roll up its sleeves and find a way to hold the 2005 increase to the least amount possible, and definitely under its ‘low’ estimate of 6.8 per cent. Police need manpower to enforce speed limits To the editor: Re: Taking action to stop bad drivers’, editorial, Jan. 9. Excellent idea, enforcing the neighbourhood speed limits, the school zone limit, and unsafe driving. Unfortunately the police do not have the manpower. The biggest trouble mak- ers in south Pickering are the vehicles cutting through the neighbourhoods to get home from the nuclear plant. There are three local schools, children, and crosswalks. No left turn signs were placed on Sandy Beach Road to stop the flow of 3 p.m. race cars tailgating through the local streets. These people have no interest in the community other than a nuclear-highway, which the police after several e-mails still treat as a miscellaneous item. The next time you see an ‘incident’ in the neighbourhood, look and see if a coloured parking tag is hanging from the rearview mirror, a telltale sign of the employees, that vehicle should not be there. There are two major streets taken to enter the neighbour- hood off of Sandy Beach Road. With two cars and two officers there, there is potentially several hundred dollars a day in revenue. Maybe when the City gets to keep the profit, cam- eras will be installed. In the meantime how about sparing some officers for the children’s safety. By Joshua May Special to the News Advertiser AJAX — Ajax Adventists are starting 2005 with a new home to call their own. The Ajax Seventh-Day Adven- tist (ASDA) Community Church opened its doors for local worship on Jan. 1, joining a number of other chapters located through- out Durham Region. “We were all driving 30 to 35 minutes every week just to get to (Apple Creek Seventh-Day Ad- ventist Church) in Oshawa,” said Lance Flash, communications director for the ASDA. “So, we examined the demographics and the number of known Adven- tists in the Ajax-area. When the numbers were tallied, it all made perfect sense, so we opened the (ASDA).” The brainchild of 60 Apple Creek members, ASDA will pro- vide all its members a local home for prayer and worship. Sharing a facility with the Refuge City Pen- tecostal Church, ASDA welcomes all residents to services. Having already amassed a con- gregation of more than 100 at its opening service, Mr. Flash says there is still room to grow. “This is a community church. Our doors are open to everyone,” said Mr. Flash. “We realize many of our members are of West In- dian descent. However, we en- courage any interested people to come worship with us.” A Christian-based faith struc- ture, similar to that of Baptists and Methodists, Adventists are a religious group whose beliefs are deeply rooted in the Holy Scrip- tures. With nearly 12 million fol- lowers worldwide, Adventists are quickly growing in numbers. Services at the ASDA are held every Saturday morning from 9:15 to 12:30 p.m. at 545 Kingston Rd. Billboard JANUARY 21, 2005 Six area teens in running for honours DURHAM — Six Ajax and Pickering residents have been nominated for this year’s Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards. Afzal Habib, Danielle Bentley, Amanda Gomes, Boyd Reid, Laura Newton and Ronald Nettey are the local nominees for the Ontario Com- munity Newspapers Association awards, joining 145 others across the province. The OCNA will announce its 12 award recipients at the beginning of February. Afzal was nominated by Lamia Sab- bagh, a staff adviser for the school stu- dent council on which the 16-year-old is vice-president. “Afzal is a good kid who performs endless hours of worthwhile commu- nity service,” said Ms. Sabbagh. “He radiates confidence and goodwill.” Danielle was nominated by her mom Christine Bentley. Ms. Bentley described Danielle as “a very selfless individual who gives her time and her energy consistently. “Danielle has had a tremendously positive impact on those around her,” she added, noting the 17-year-old holds a part-time job and is involved with a number of school clubs and activities, all while still maintaining an 88-per cent average in school. Susan Brady nominated Amanda because of her volunteer effort with Ms. Brady’s autistic son Adam. “Unselfishly she gave up her sum- mer afternoons twice a week in order to play with Adam. She somehow found a way to break through and provide our baby with a much needed friend” said Ms. Brady. Amanda, 16, volunteers her time while maintaining a 70-per cent aver- age in school. Boyd was nominated by Paula Charles, a relative. “Boyd is a good kid,” said Ms. Charles. “He always thinks of others and gives unselfishly.” Among his accomplishments, Boyd, 11, has received numerous certificates of achievement, including for being a team player, achieve honour’s stand- ing, play-day volunteer, and Town of Ajax participant. Laura was nominated by Barbara Griffin, a teacher at J. Clarke Richard- son Collegiate. “Although dealing with some health issues of her own, Laura always finds time to help others. She demonstrates a definite affinity for seniors, children and especially children with disabili- ties,” said Ms. Griffin. Ms. Griffin described the 16-year- old as “a worthwhile candidate who will continue through leadership to help make life better for people in all the walks of life.” Ronald, president of the Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School student council, was nominated by teacher Pierina Kakis. “His dedication to education and helping others earned him many awards, some of which were being valedictorian in Grades 6 and 8,” said Ms. Pierina. “He is reliable and punc- tual and has excellent communication skills. Ronald is a great asset to his school, his community and his fam- ily.” While the 17-year-old was given a series of tests in elementary school that identified him as a gifted student, he chose to participate in a regular program, since he does not see himself as being different from other students. A proposal submitted by Eastern Power to build a wind farm at the Brock West Power Plant wasn’t one of the renewable energy proj- ects approved by the Prov- ince late last year. Gregory Vogt, president of Eastern Power, said he was disappointed but didn’t rule out something down the road. “We’ll have to see what the future opportunities bring,” he said. “Never say never.” In an effort to increase the supply of clean energy, and to compensate for the planned closure of coal- fired generating stations, the Province called for pro- posals last spring. Mr. Vogt didn’t know why the proposal to put five or six wind-driven generators on the site wasn’t approved, but admitted it could have been because of a lack of time to prepare the propos- al. The City of Toronto owns the site in Pickering and Mr. Vogt said they wanted to have support from both municipalities before mov- ing ahead. “We didn’t want to do anything in Pickering that the City of Pickering didn’t support or the City of To- ronto didn’t,” he said. Once Pickering expressed its support there was little time to work out a lease agreement with Toronto for use of the site. “We did the best we could with what we had but the Province was looking for firmer agreements,” said Mr. Vogt. The project would have generated eight megawatts of energy, enough to power about 4,000 homes. Mr. Vogt said going through the process did allow the company to learn about the technology. “We hope there are still other opportunities and we look forward to taking ad- vantage of those opportuni- ties if the Province presents them in the future,” he said. Ten projects were ap- proved by the Province, in- cluding several dealing with wind energy. By James McMurtrie Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING — Her mode of transportation may have let her down twice recently, but Pat Perry’s misfortunes helped her realize she has some very good neighbours. It was Christmas Eve, a night the Pickering resident described as “clear, but cold” as she waited with her lug- gage on Oklahoma Drive in Pickering for a bus. While it was once tradition for her family to meet each year at Ms. Perry’s house for the holidays, ever since her daughter had moved three years ago, a shift moved the annual gathering, making for an extended journey for Ms. Perry. “Because of the snow and the conditions I didn’t want to chance the drive,” Ms. Perry said of her decision to opt for public transit this year. But the deep hum of an approaching bus never came. Instead a car pulled up and offered her a ride to the GO station. “Even though I was a total stranger, they offered to take me there so that I didn’t have to wait in the cold,” recalled a thankful Ms. Perry, who now has a greater appreciation for her neighbourhood. You see, the occupants of the car, Susan and David, have lived nearby for 10 years. As if one good neighbourly turn wasn’t enough, early in 2005 Ms. Perry found herself like many motorists in the cold of winter on the way to work — stuck. Her van sat in her driveway, refusing to start. “I couldn’t get it going, It was raining and I was going to walk to work,” said Ms. Perry. A bad ignition coil may have hindered her day, but roadside misfortune yet again sparked goodwill in a passer- by. Tony, a neighbour up the road offered her a boost, but to no avail. So, he gave her a drive to work, getting her there on time. “I didn’t know any of these people, and I really thought that was a good thing,” said a relieved Ms. Perry, who’s now entered the new year with optimism and a renewed faith in her fellow man, and of course, her good neigh- bours. If you have a Good Neigh- bours story to tell about someone who’s gone above and beyond to help you or someone else in need, let us know by e-mailing dstell@durhamregion.com. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, JANUARY 21, 2005 PAGE 19 A/P A new 15-story condomini- um in Pickering has a prime location in the heart of the city center and designs that will appeal to people who enjoy special, upscale living. With Highway 401 and the GO station practically at its doorstep, the 131 unit Odyssey is ideal for com- muters or people who appre- ciate having numerous amenities within walking distance of home. The building to be situated on the corners of Diefenbaker and Valley Farm Road, off Pickering Parkway, is steps away from the city’s 250,000 square foot recre- ation complex, adjacent to the central library and Pickering City Hall, and a short stroll to Pickering To wn Center shopping mall. The project is the latest offering from the Rockport Group, which has a 40-year history in Pickering and recently built the neighbor- ing Serenade town home development. Rockport president, Jack Winberg says while Serenade was geared to young profes- sionals, young families and first time buyers, Odyssey will appeal to move down buyers and young profession- als looking for upscale suites. “We have predominantly two bedroom and one bed- room plus den models,” says Winberg. “This is for the suburban market, people who like space and are mov- ing from generously sized homes who don’t want to sacrifice everything they had.” He says that the Pickering market has matured and anticipates buyers will include those who live in the area now who are looking to downsize, as well as people who previously lived there and are moving back to be closer to their grandchildren. “When you age and your kids are gone, you want something fresh and new to go into the next chapter of your life”, says Winberg. “We learned a lot about this (empty nester) market from Reflections on Bogart Pond”, a condo project Rockport built in Newmarket. Winberg says part of what was learned from that project was that buyers want well- designed living and kitchen areas and “wonderful bath- rooms.” The Odyssey suites range from 700 to 1850 square feet in size and are priced from $189,900 to $459,900. All units come with one or two patios, balconies and terraces. The majority of units will have 8’6” ceilings, except for penthouses and ground floor suites, which will have 9 to 10 foot ceilings. Kitchens in the suites come with break- fast bars, granite counter- tops, double sinks and veg- etable sprayers. Master bedrooms feature soaker tubs and some units have separate shower stalls. There is a wide range of floor plans to choose from, including standard suites, plus upgraded club suites and penthouses. Suites on the ninth floor and above will have views of Lake Ontario to the south. The exterior of the build- ing will be precast concrete and clay brick, and the lobby will be appointed with columns, coffered ceilings, marble inlaid floors, chande- liers, upscale furniture and artwork. And the building’s “point block tower” design means there are no long corridors. All suites will be within steps of the elevator. “For residents, it allows easy access to elevators, and for a builder this is a very efficient design because you’re not building a lot of floor space your not selling. It maximizes the living space”, says Winberg. The Odyssey amenities include a party room, bil- liards room, and exercise room. The project opened last October and the building has been remarkably well received by the market. The sales office has several room vignettes. The office is located on Pickering Pa rkway at Valley Farm Rd. Hours are Monday to Wednesday 1pm-7pm, Thursdays by appointment, Closed Fridays, and Saturday/Sunday/Holidays Noon to 5pm. By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM — Despite a serious illness, Steve Martin is planning a return to the Durham District School Board table. The board on Tuesday issued a statement regarding the Scugog trustee’s condition, but did not state the nature of the illness. “I was diagnosed with a serious medical condition prior to Christ- mas,” said Trustee Martin. “I am undergoing treatment and it is hav- ing some positive effect. I am feel- ing much bet- ter than I was and I am look- ing forward to returning.” Trustee Martin “ap- preciates all the thoughts and best wishes I’ve had from par- ents and people at schools” and said he is not stepping down. Board chairman Michael Barrett said his colleague quite rightly is fo- cusing his attention on his health. “All of the thoughts and the prayers of trustees and staff are certainly with Steve and his family,” said the Oshawa trustee. Trustee Martin was elected in November 2003, the only trustee candidate to defeat an incumbent. He posted a convincing, 2,300-plus vote victory over Martin Demmers. The married father of two grown children is a real estate agent. Be- fore that, he had a 33-year career as an educator in Scarborough, both in front of the classroom and as an administrator and math con- sultant. Trustee Barrett said the Scugog trustee’s presence is al- ready being missed at the board table. Trustee Martin is not receiving calls, and asks parents with any concerns to contact north Durham schools superintendent Gloria Schwabe or Scugog administrative officer Doug Crichton. However he is monitoring his board e-mail and wants to assure Scugog residents that he is in the loop in terms of what’s going on in the township’s schools. “Certainly any concerns that come my way are not passed by; they are being forwarded to the ap- propriate people,” Trustee Martin said. Whitby parent Howard Abbey, at Monday’s Durham District School Board meeting, asked for an update on how trustees were progressing and what had been recommended as far as changes to the policy. The board’s policy, approved last April, eliminated surplus seating for hundreds of Durham students who previously had a bus seat. At the same time, the policy now permits parents to have their children picked up at home and dropped off at a day- care facility after school. Parents for months called on the board to change the policy. In October, trustees formed an ad hoc transportation committee to review it. “Last week, the trustee ad hoc committee completed its review of the transportation policy,” board chairman Michael Barrett said at the meeting. He said a report is coming to the board’s Feb. 7 standing com- mittee meeting, when “trustees will consider what direction they want to take.” Steve Martin durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, JANUARY 21, 2005 PAGE 21 A/P more than you came for May not be combined with any other offer. DURHAM — Giving students an edge is the aim of the public school board’s French immersion (FI) pro- gram, and later this month interested parents have an opportunity to learn more about it. FI information meetings will be held at 13 Durham schools on Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. as registration for the 2005/06 school year gets underway. Maria Di Mauro, the Durham Dis- trict School Board’s French facilita- tor, says parents will learn what kind of child is suitable for FI, the goals of the program and more. She notes that 90 per cent of FI parents are not French, and those considering the program can also learn about the Ca- nadian Parents for French group and what help it can offer. Ms. Di Mauro says kindergarten teachers are a good resource for par- ents to help decide if FI is right for their child. “When your child is verbal in Eng- lish they’re going to be verbal in other languages as well,” she says, adding once the door to a second language is opened others open as well. There are 3,156 FI elementary stu- dents in Durham public schools, she says, and while the elementary panel number is always rising, the opposite is the case at the secondary level. Ms. Di Mauro says one factor to explain that is high school students have to take a number of compulsory courses to follow their pathway to college or university and the like. However the benefits of acquiring the French language are many, she says. FI students that live more than 1.6 kilometres from their designated school are entitled to bus service. Parents can register their children at the information meeting or con- tact the principal of the nearest FI school. Meetings are in Oshawa at Walter E. Harris and T.R. McEwen, in Whitby at F.M. Heard and Captain Michael VandenBos, in Ajax at Cadarackque and Southwood Park, and in Picker- ing at Frenchman’s Bay and Sir John A. Macdonald public schools. North Durham meetings are at Uxbridge Public School and McCaskill’s Mills (Brock) and R.H. Cornish (Port Perry) public schools. There are also meet- ings at Pickering High School in Ajax and Port Perry High School. If you have a story to tell, e-mail dstell@durhamregion. Pickering businessman Kevin Morgan, right, is encouraging others to follow his lead and donate to local tsuna- mi relief efforts. He’s pledged $30,000, with help from his business associates, including Brian Stephen of Di- emax Tool and Die, left. Pickering Councillor Bill McLean is chairman of a community relief fundraising group. By Joshua May Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING — After investing so much of his time and livelihood into the community, Kevin Morgan is now helping those outside of it. The 39-year-old owner of Picker- ing Playing Fields recently joined a growing number of politicians, com- munity groups and businesses for the Durham Community Tsunami Relief effort. One of his first moves was to contact a few of his fellow business associates, arranging pledges for $30,000 to the victims of the recent tsunami tragedy in South Asia. “I basically got on the phone and asked a few fellow vendors to help donate,” said Mr. Morgan. “We can- not reverse this tragedy but we can try and help to build a better place for the future. It’s the right thing to do.” Mr. Morgan, who provided $20,000 of his own money, felt obliged to help. Having three children, Mr. Mor- gan is very sympathetic to the grow- ing number of devastated families as a result of the natural disaster. “I couldn’t even watch the news,” he said. “Imagine you were there and you had to suffer what these people went through. This event impacts everyone on a global level. It will definitely be the biggest fundraising project ever.” Mr. Morgan pointed out that sim- ilar sliding plates that caused the large earthquake in South Asia rest just off the coast of British Columbia and that disaster can strike close to home at any moment. He is also planning to host a fund- raising event for the Durham Tamil Association this summer, in conjunc- tion with the grand opening of his go-kart race track, to support the need for ongoing tsunami relief. The Durham Community Tsunami Relief effort invites all Durham resi- dents to take part in some way lead- ing up to a grand finale planned for Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Deer Creek Banquet Facility in Ajax. Every dollar raised through Dur- ham Community Tsunami Relief is donated to the Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund. The Pickering Rotary Club is ad- ministering the account and will issue tax receipts for donations of more than $10 before turning the funds over to the Red Cross. Donations in the name of ‘Durham Community Tsunami Relief’ can be made at Bank of Montreal branches. The account number is 8143-305, the bank number is 001 and the transit number is 29972. Stage manager and entertain- ment co-ordinator for a large tsu- nami relief fundraiser Saturday, Jan. 29, Guthrie is amply excited regarding the confirmed acts in- volved with the event to date. With an assortment of predominately local bands performing everything from cultural to mainstream music, Guthrie assures a great time for anyone planning to attend. “These are top-notch perform- ers,” said Guthrie. “I am so im- pressed with the charity of these bands. Everyone is donating their time and effort to help those less- fortunate than ourselves. It’s truly astounding the generosity of our community.” Raving over the involvement of the Durham community thus far to the relief effort, Guthrie is convinced the community can still do more to help aid the victims in South Asia. “This is going to be a huge show and we’d love to have the whole community’s support,” said Guth- rie, noting Home Depot officials in Durham are pulling together countless silent auction items for the public to bid on. “There will be plenty of food and entertainment for everyone to enjoy and all in the name of a good cause.” Advertising their act as lots of brass, a little sass and a plenty of pizzazz, the George Lake Big Band, is ecstatic it can aid victims across the seas. “We wanted to do something to help (the people of South Asia),” said Steve Pettafor, trumpet player and band leader. “Since we’re unable to physically help these victims, we figured this was the least we could do in way of relief support.” Among the other acts through- out the day are the Mondae Knight, George Lake Big Band, Brian Rose Jazz Quintet, Rick Johnson’s Coun- try Jamboree, the Durham Tamil Association, Ezhisai Madura Sabaa Indian Classical Instrumental, and also Indian snake dances. The Jan. 29 fundraiser is just one of the many community events being undertaken as part of the Durham Community Tsunami Re- lief effort. Made up of politicians at all levels of government, business- es, community groups, and other individuals from all across Durham Region, a working group was es- tablished to bring the community together for what is hoped to be the biggest relief effort in Durham’s his- tory. It’s at Deer Creek Golf and Ban- quet Facility in Ajax, with free fam- ily-oriented activities from 11 to 4 p.m., followed by a paid evening reception from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tick- ets to the evening event are $50 and available at the Ajax, Claring- ton, Oshawa and Pickering city and town halls, along with the Pickering Town Centre. In addition, a Metroland Durham Region Media Group online charity auction running through its dur- hamregion.com site will wrap up at 10 p.m. at the Jan. 29 event. Scrap now wiles away the hours working as a cleaner in Frankie’s gym. Wary of the young talent that passes before him, Frankie lets a succession of great boxers slip through his fingers. Then brash, confident Maggie Fitzgerald (Swank) strides into the gym and Dunn’s ideas are changed. At first he refuses to train Mag- gie because of her youthful age and gender, but eventually Frankie changes his mind when he is faced with her confidence and talent. Pickering artist finds inspiration in watercolours By James McMurtrie Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING — Take in the wa- tercolours of Sylvia Valentine at the Pickering Civic Complex. On now, until Feb. 11, the public is invited to visit Valentine’s ex- hibit, which features subject mat- ters that vary with the seasons. Summer pieces are based on the blooming vitality of the shining sun and real flowers, while winter brings the frigidity of frosty land- scapes and icy lifeless stills. Valentine has been a constant source of creativity from birth. She has dabbled in various professions and art forms, from being a regis- tered nurse who dabbled in oils and acrylics, to Durham College where she learned to teach the art of watercolours so that she could share her flair for that medium. Valentine’s passion goes beyond the brush, filling her life as well. “It’s inspiring, I cant get enough of it, there aren’t enough hours in the day” she says. Compared to oil or acrylics, working in watercolours, “isn’t tedious,” adding the medium is faithful. When asked what sets it aside from other forms, Ms. Val- entine says, “The spontaneity of it, the clear colours, it’s exciting I think.” The modest Valentine is no ordi- nary teacher either, talking about her philosophy of watercolours. “A nyone is creative, you just have to work harder at it, so there- fore you conquer the medium” she says, adding, “I never like to tell a person how to paint, I just show them the brush, the paint and the paper.” The civic complex is at 1 The Esplanade, in Pickering. Pickering Olympian gears up for KIA men’s provincials By Jim Easson Special to the News Advertiser AJAX — An Annandale ban- tam girls’ team earned the right to compete at the regionals this month by having a winning run at the zone playdowns at the Sutton Curling Club last weekend. In the bantam girls’ (under-16) competition, skip Lesley Pyne led her foursome to victory in the ‘A’ side of the draw. The Pyne rink now heads to the bantam-level regionals at the York Curling Club in Newmarket on Jan. 22. With Pyne on the team were Heather Bell, Leahanne Legrow and Stacey Hogan. Jennifer McGhee coaches the team. Rinks skipped by Jaclyn Ste- phenson, Corey Morrow, and Mi- chael Bryson also represented the Annandale Curling Club at zones. ••• Gord Norton’s Annandale rink captured the McLaughlin ’spiel in Oshawa on Jan. 8, winning for the third year in a row. With Norton were Warren Leslie, Alex Bian- chi, and Harry Nolte. The team received first picks from the prize table. Meanwhile, Annandale’s Craig Jewer team of Paul Jewer, John Gardner, and Dale Neely had the club’s best showing in the TCA Energizer Bonspiel, which ran last week and ended Saturday. The Jewer rink bowed out in the semi- final of the Third Event. Annandale teams skipped by Bill Buffey and Glenn Bull sur- vived to Thursday night in the Fourth Event, but lost out on home ice. ••• A Pickering Olympian has his eyes on winning the Kia Cup Men’s Ontario Curling Cham- pionship, hosted by the Whitby Curling Club at the Iroquois Park Sports Complex from Feb. 7 to 13. Richard Hart, who curls for skip Glenn Howard’s Coldwater-based rink, is one of the teams vying for the provincial title. With it comes a berth in the Tim Hortons Brier in Edmonton starting March 5. Other big-name entrants in Whitby include Wayne Middaugh of St. George’s and Peter Corner of Glanford. Pickering teen, partner to dance at Canadian skating championships Barnes and Chong looking for top-10 finish in first year at junior level By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — This weekend’s Canadian Figure Skating Champi- onships will be a new experience for a Pickering figure skater. Spencer Barnes, 18, and his part- ner Andrea Chong, 17, of Toronto, make their skating debuts at the national showcase, competing in the junior dance division against the nation’s top 16 pairs. But, Barnes and his partner aren’t looking to take medals away from the championships, at London’s John Labatt Centre from Jan. 17 to 23. In fact, a top-finish would be a good weekend’s work for the dance pair, currently in their first cam- paign at the junior level. “We’ve never been to the Canadi- ans before” says Barnes, a Grade 12 student at Dunbarton High School. “We’re pretty excited to see how it is. “A lot of (our competition) has been in junior for a while. We still have a while to go before we move up to senior. We’re hoping for a top-10 finish. We’re not going for anything too high because it’s our first year.” The junior season has been an extremely busy one for Barnes and Chong, who operate out of the Scar- borough Skating Club. They started the season in August at a junior event in San Jose, California. The duo finished a highly respectable fourth. A month later, Chong and Barnes represented Canada at the Budapest Grand Prix 2004. There, they under- went a trial by fire against many top international junior dance teams. In the end, the Canadians finished just out of the top 10, in 11th spot. Of late, the duo moved on to di- visionals after an exhibition skate at the sectionals event in Midland in November. At divisionals in Missis- sauga from Dec. 2 to 6, Chong and Barnes finished sixth. Chong and Barnes have been partnered for the last five years, end- ing their time in the novice dance category on a high note a year ago by winning the novice dance crown at the 2004 BMO Financial Group Skate Canada Junior Nationals in Nepean. They spent two years com- peting in the juvenile and pre-nov- ice brackets, respectively. “We’ve moved up through the levels very quickly,” says Barnes. Barnes says working with Chong has been a fine experience as she’s a perfect complement to him on the ice. “We work well together because we’ve been together for so long,” he says. “Andrea has a really nice expression and she really looks nice when she skates.” The Canadian championships is the last major for the duo this year. They will, however, skate in some shows to finish off the 2005 cam- paign. They plan to skate at the junior level next year. photo courtesy of Barnes family Andrea Chong, 17, and Spencer Barnes, 18, of Pickering, will compete for their first time ever in the junior dance cat- egory at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in London this weekend. The duo, which skates out of the Scar- borough Skating Club, is aiming for a top-10 finish. DURHAM — Durham Attack is accepting registration for the boys’ winter house league volleyball sea- son.
