Pickering man charged in cruiser crash DURHAM — Police in York Re- gion have charged a Pickering man with impaired driving after a crash involving a marked cruiser. Yo rk police said an officer going east on Hwy. 407 near Kennedy Road in Markham around 5:30 a.m. Jan. 9, when his cruiser was struck from behind by a silver 2004 BMW being driven by a Pickering man. Yo rk officers investigating the collision arrested the driver of the BMW for impaired driving. He was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries and the officer was shaken up, but not hurt. Charged with impaired driving, driving while exceeding the legal blood-alcohol level and danger- ous driving is Sai Li, 31, of Picker- ing. He is to appear in court in Newmarket Jan. 31. Pickering agencies could struggle with high demand, officials warn By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM — While millions of donations pour into tsunami-rav- aged south Asia, local charitable groups want to make sure people don’t forget about causes closer to home. “Local agencies will struggle this year,” said Bill Fry, executive director of the John Howard So- ciety, which helps people across Durham with housing, counsel- ling and employment. “Because people will say, ‘We gave there already.’” Donations from Canada (not including government donations) to large agencies such as the Ca- nadian Red Cross and UNICEF have exceeded $135 million. Individual donations to the United Way Ajax-Pickering-Ux- bridge were down $8,000 at the end of 2004, said Executive Di- rector Edna Klazek. The United Way Clarington-Oshawa-Whitby- Scugog-Brock (UWCOWSB) was down $6,000. “And the problem is... a num- ber of people within our commu- nity have lost relatives over there,” she said. “They may be dealing with depression and will be rely- ing on those services within our community.” The United Way funds dozens of organizations, including the Victorian Order of Nurses, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Distress Centre Durham. “When you pull the amount of money from a community that the tsunami has, there’s going to be an effect, particularly to the local charities,” said Cindy Mur- ray, executive director of the UW- COWSB. Two of Durham’s hospital foun- dations believe people will just dig a little deeper this year. “We’re not seeing any direct impact at this point, and the donations continued to flow in through the holiday sea- son,” said Debbie Mc- Garr y, pres- ident and CEO of the Rouge Valley Health System foun- dation. “The experience usually demonstrates that people usually dig deeper when extraordinary events occur.” She cited September 11, 2001, as an example. Cash for Cancer lottery ticket sales — which will raise funds for the Durham cancer centre — are right on track for a sellout, said Jim Szeman, executive director of the Lakeridge Health Oshawa foundation. “The people in Durham come in here and see the equipment we need,” he said, adding he thinks most people will view contribu- tions to the tsunami as a special donation. “I’m not worried at all.” The Canadian Cancer Society hopes personal services such as volunteer drivers and emotional support are considered valuable enough that people will still open their wallets. The Durham Region Humane Society, like the cancer society, also has a unique group of donors that its manager is sure will come through. “Most people still want to help the animals that are here,” said Ruby Richards. “It’s these ani- mals that will need homes in this area.” Many people who regularly do- nate to the Humane Society have also been donating to animal res- cue efforts in south Asia. — With files from To rstar News Service Pickering Islamic Centre raises $52,000 at dinner By Joshua May Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING — The Muslim community is making its pitch to help disaster-torn south Asia. In a dinner hosted last Sunday at the Pickering Islamic Centre, Durham Muslims made dona- tions in support of the Canadian Mu slim Relief Council (CMRC), a fund designed specifically to aid the victims of the recent tsunami tragedy. With a gathering of more than 200 guests, including Ajax and Pickering politicians at all levels of government, the centre raised $52,000, as of Friday. “I was astounded we could raise so much funds in such a short period of time,” said Iqbal Ibrahim, chair- man of the fundraising committee. “We have a very good relationship with the Ajax-Pickering mayors, MPs and councils, and they did an outstanding job in helping us put on this relief effort.” Charging $20 a plate for adults and $10 for kids, organizers also collected donations to the cause. The proceeds will boost the CMRC’s cumulative goal of $1- million for tsunami relief from Is- lamic centres across the province. “We want all Canadians to get involved (with the relief effort). That is the Canadian way,” said Mr. Ibrahim. “The (PIC) is not just a prayer facility, it is a representa- tion of the community. We should all get together and contribute for causes such as these.” The CRMC also plans to con- tribute $10,000 every year follow- ing its $1-million donation to pro- vide continued relief to the people of South Asia. An officer on patrol saw a Chrys- ler Concorde speeding in the east- bound lanes of Hwy. 401 near Rougemount Drive around 1:30 a.m. Thursday and attempted to pull it over, according to a report. The driver sped away, reaching speeds of 188 km/h on the high- way, where the speed limit is 100 km/h, police said. The Chrysler exited the 401 at Westney Road and continued north, said Constable Jeff Ed- wards, media relations officer with the OPP. The driver continued on, even after the car struck a curb and flattened its tires. Sparks flew from the rims of the vehicle as the driver continued on a short distance in an attempt to evade police, said Const. Edwards. The driver finally abandoned the vehicle at Fletcher Street and Epps Crescent, in a residential neighbourhood just south of Ross- land Road. The suspect fled on foot through back yards until he was nabbed by officers, Const. Ed- wards said. Police found an open bottle of liquor and almost five grams of crack cocaine in the vehicle, Const. Edwards said. Police sent the man, who refused to provide a breath sample, to hospital for his own protection. “We didn’t know what his blood-alcohol level was, because he wouldn’t provide a breath sam- ple,” Const. Edwards said. “(Officers) were concerned about blood-alcohol poisoning.” The driver is described as a G1 licence holder who just received his learner’s permit in September of 2004. Howard Bennett, 30, of Toronto, is charged with impaired driving; refusing to provide a breath sam- ple; flight from police; dangerous driving; possession of a controlled substance; having liquor readily available and numerous Highway Traffic Act offences. Driver hospitalized after high-speed police chase through Ajax and Pickering Ten times as many accidents as normal DURHAM — Wednesday morn- ing’s icy conditions caused hun- dreds of accidents on Durham’s roads, according to police. There were about 30 accidents by 10 a.m. on roads patrolled by Whitby’s OPP detachment. That’s “about 10 times a nor- mal morning,” said Sergeant Harry Carrigan. Whitby OPP covers the 401 from Rougemount to Newtonville, north on Hwy. 12 from Brooklin to Gamebridge, and Hwy. 115. “It was mostly fender benders, cars in the ditch — minor stuff, nothing major at all,” said Sgt. Car- rigan. Later in the day, Hwy. 115 near Kirby was closed and traffic re- routed for approximately one hour, due to a jack-knifed tractor trailer and icy conditions. The road re- opened early in the afternoon. Durham Regional Police were also dealing with numerous colli- sions on icy roads. “We’ve had over 106 (acci- dents) between 6:10 and 10:10 this morning,” said Sergeant Paul Mc- Curbin. “On a regular day we would re- ceive reports, on average, on about six motor vehicle collision person- al injury accidents. Today we have at least 20,” Sgt. McCurbin said. The most serious accident in- vestigated by Durham police was a collision between a car and a trac- tor trailer at Thickson Road and Victoria Street in Whitby around 4:30 a.m. The driver of the car was taken to hospital with serious inju- ries. Durham cops also investigated 84 accidents involving property damage, four times the average on a normal day. Police were responded to two accidents in which drivers failed to remain at the scene, Sgt. Mc- Curbin said. Meanwhile, conditions in some areas meant delivery of mail by Canada Post letter carriers was sporadic Wednesday. “Some (letter carriers) are going out and some are not,” said a spokeswoman at Canada Post’s corporate office in Oshawa late We dnesday morning. “The trucks can’t get around (to deliver mail to boxes along routes).” Letter carriers were held back from their routes waiting for the weather to improve, one carrier said. Those who did brave the freezing rain and slippery walking conditions wore spikes strapped to their boots to help them get a grip as they walked their routes. Icy roads cause havoc for local drivers Cindy Pierson Dulay’s angel a winner By Joshua May Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING — A Picker- ing woman has earned this year’s Media Eclipse Award for outstanding thorough- bred photography. Cindy Pierson Dulay, an avid horse-lover and racing aficionado, earned the Na- tional Thoroughbred Rac- ing Association’s (NTRA) honour for her picture, ‘Stephan’s Angel,’ which she captured during the Miss Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course. The photo- graph, which shows a young horse leaping in the air dur- ing the trainer’s attempt to saddle her, was chosen by a panel of judges as the top entry of 2004 and was origi- nally published in last July’s issue of Mid-Atlantic Thor- oughbred. “It was an absolute shock that I won. This is like win- ning an Oscar,” said Ms. Dulay. “It was in a split- second that I managed to get that shot. In fact, the photograph is actually the horse throwing quite a fit. She really didn’t want to be saddled.” Ms. Dulay’s fascination with horses developed more than 10 years ago after be- coming involved with a group that owned a thor- oughbred. Ms. Dulay offered to create an Internet website for the horse and felt a few photographs might spice up the site. She’s been tak- ing pictures of horses ever since. “I’ve been to many differ- ent racetracks in many dif- ferent cities,” said Ms. Dulay. “But I’m just a little guy. I don’t work for a big orga- nization. I was so surprised when I was told I won. I was literally shaking.” Although originally born in Florida, Ms. Dulay has lived in Canada for nearly four years. Ms. Dulay feels an affinity for the country and is quick to point out that only four Canadians have ever been awarded the NTRA honour. The Media Eclipse Awards are intended to recognize members of the media for outstanding coverage of thoroughbred racing. This year’s award ceremonies are Jan. 24 at the Regent Bev- erly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, California. “Everyone told me this was a great picture. I just never imagined this kind of thing could ever happen to me,” said Ms. Dulay. “This is something that happens to everyone but me.” Since 1998, Ms. Dulay has run two websites strictly devoted to thoroughbred photography and racing at horseracing.about.com and www.horse-races.net. GTAA planning, VOCAL mobilizing as two sides push for and against plan By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — The public meet- ings may have stopped for now, but all is not quiet on the Picker- ing airport front. Both the Greater Toronto Air- ports Authority and Voters Orga- nized to Cancel the Airport Lands (VOCAL) have been busy working on their next moves. “We’re putting together the project description, which is the next step in the process,” said Con- nie Turner, GTAA spokeswoman. The project description is a for- mal document that has to be pre- pared in advance of the environ- mental assessment for the Cana- dian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA). It includes details on the nature of the project, un- derlying need, background, proj- ect information and resources. Another piece of information included with the project descrip- tion is the comments and ques- tions received from the public at the open houses held in areas around Durham and Markham in late November and early Decem- ber. Ms. Turner said 1,100 comment cards were distributed but only 29 were received back. “I’d say it’s 50-50,” she said. “Fifty per cent have concerns about hav- ing a regional airport there and 50 per cent have questions about when and how soon can they get jobs.” The project description won’t be available to the public until after it is submitted to CEAA. Next comes the EA. “I wouldn’t anticipate it until March maybe, it could be later,” Ms. Turner said. It is expected to take two to three years to com- plete and will feature more open houses. “There are a large number of opportunities during the EA for the public to be involved,” she said. Ms. Turner said in the next few weeks the GTAA would be posting answers to questions asked at the open houses on its website (www. gtaa.com). Once the EA is com- plete, the federal gov- ernment has final say on whether an airport is built. While the GTAA has been busy working on the next step in the proposal to build an airport in north Pick- ering, VOCAL — the group that wants to stop that from happen- ing — has been busy trying to find ways to prevent it from being approved. “We’ve been working away on a variety of things,” said Stephen Frederick, the group’s president. It held a meeting in December too to try to build up its member- ship and get people mobilized, and since then Mr. Frederick said the group has sent a letter to fed- eral Minister of Transport Jean Lapierre asking for the EA to be put on hold until a peer review is done. As well, more than 65 e-mails have also been sent to members of Parliament expressing opposition. At the VOCAL meeting in Decem- ber, Mr. Frederick urged people to e-mail MPs to share their feel- ings about the possibility of an airport. He said he was copied on more than 65 e-mails in the past month. VOCAL has also been working on getting its website together. “We’re hoping to have it opera- tional by the end of this week,” Mr. Frederick said Wednesday. The group is also aiming on having an general annual meeting the week of Jan. 24. “There are half-a-dozen initia- tives that we want to try and get completed by the end of this week in preparation for the annual gen- eral meeting,” he said. Entirely public system just not sustainable P oor Ralph Klein. It seems that no matter what the Alberta premier says, too many of us here in east- ern Canada are quick to write him off. So many of his ideas and comments are dismissed out of hand as radical western thinking. But do you know what? Mr. Klein’s new ‘third way’ health plan, the one introduced this week to much derision, sounds more and more like the most sensible prescription to come from a politician to date. Yo u won’t find anyone in Canada who can tell you honestly that our health- care system isn’t in need of some serious repair. You also won’t find anyone that can offer a real cure when you consider our growing and aging population, com- bined with the current level of funding. Just look here at home. Rouge Valley Health System officials in Ajax and Pick- ering, along with Lakeridge in east Dur- ham, continue to struggle year after year to balance their books. There just never seems to be enough funding coming our way, no matter the reduction in execu- tive positions, no matter the efficiencies that are found in service delivery, no matter, no matter, no matter. Now if we all want to sign on for massive tax increases (in addition, of course, to the massive amount of extra taxes Premier Dalton McGuinty is doing his best to deliver already) then yes, we likely can sustain an entirely public sys- tem. But that’s just not realistic. The cur- rent tax burden is already testing most families and getting more difficult by the year. Our universal public health system was, is, a wonderful concept. But we’ve outgrown it. We have to begin looking at ways to use its best points to comple- ment the introduction of private part- ners and services. Our private school system certainly hasn’t diluted the qual- ity education children receive from pub- licly-funded boards. As such, it’s time to start looking at what health services can be delivered by the private sector in a way that offers relief for the public system, and relief for patients desperately trying to get care in a timely manner. And offering the choice of paying for health services just isn’t as evil as many would have you believe. Good for Mr. Klein for showing fore- sight in an area demanding real solu- tions. Pretending there’s no problem and that more money and reports are the answer will buy some time. However, by sticking these bandages here and there to stop the bleeding now, we’re only asking for severe hemorrhaging in the not-too-distant future. To ny Doyle’s column appears every third Sunday. E-mail tdoyle@durhamregion. com. Klein delivers health care reality EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com Tony Doyle managing editor EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR Vaccines are a matter of choice T he new year has brought an extra gift to parents across Durham Region who can now take advantage of more free vaccines available to their children. As of this month, the Province is footing the bill for three vaccines that previously could have cost parents upward of $700 per child, according to Dr. Donna Reynolds, Durham’s Associate Medical Officer of Health. She points out that, in many cases, parents whose drug plans didn’t cover the costs had to pay if they wanted the vaccines. Kids can now get free shots that help prevent diseases such as chicken pox, men- ingitis, pneumonia, and related bloodstream infections. None of the newly covered vaccines, available at doctors’ offices, are mandatory, so parents can choose whether their children receive them. In the past few years, particularly with the educational campaign urging people to get flu shots, questions have been raised about the necessity of vaccines. According to the Canadian Medical Association website, those concerns have included safety and side effects, overloading the immune system and vaccine effectiveness. Some people, the CMA says, have argued that better hygiene and diet, not vaccines, are responsible for reducing childhood diseases. But the association points out that it wasn’t too long ago that serious childhood diseases reached epidemic propor- tions, claiming thousands of lives and leaving others dis- abled. Think polio, for one. The CMA says vaccines have not been shown to cause any health problems, and suggests it’s coincidence if children develop problems after receiving a shot. It claims 10 of 13 re- searchers who raised concerns over a relationship between the mumps-measles vaccine and autism have officially with- drawn their findings. The medical association also refutes claims that vaccines overload the immune system, and says that decreases in vaccine-preventable childhood diseases are mostly due to children receiving shots. In Canada, the CMA continues, the natural occurrence of vaccine-preventable diseases has fallen to “a few dozen, or none at all.” Advances in medicine over the past several decades and the development of vaccines mean our children are no longer falling prey to diseases such as TB, polio and diphtheria. Years ago, they were killers. But parents who have questions or concerns over having their children vaccinated are best advised to discuss the issue with their doctor. The best decision is an informed decision. There are great churches out there T o the editor: Re: ‘A father’s choice limits his sons’, Neil Crone, Jan. 5. Mr. Crone asked questions as to which Bible stories to read and how to introduce the “biblical lore” to his sons. He also mentioned that he didn’t regret leaving ‘organized’ church. Okay... so how about visiting one that is unlike any church he has ever seen? Where there are fun programs that talk about those Bible stories to kids of all ages? As of Jan. 17, drivers will have the option of parking in one of the two main lots at a flat rate of $7 or in one of three areas on the west and east sides of the hospital using the new pay and display units. The new units allow people to pay for the exact amount of time they want — up to a maximum of $6 for three hours. In the flat rate lots drivers had to pay $7 regardless of the amount of time they spent at the hospital. The solar-powered pay and dis- play units provide payment op- tions that include cash and credit cards. Three new units are being installed, including one in the wheelchair accessible disabled parking lot. The pay and display option replaces the 22 metred parking spots currently available at the hospital. The units can be moved once the hospital expansion proj- ect gets underway. Revenue from the parking lots supports the purchase of new equipment at the hospital. Ajax and Pickering have a new parking option at hospital A/P PAGE 8 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, JANUARY 16, 2005 durhamregion.com A NEW YEAR :: A NEW YOU Saturday, January 15 – 10-6 PM Sunday, January 16 – 10-5 PM What resolutions will you make in 2005? Living with heart failure often means being short of breath and feeling tired and sluggish. While treatment of heart failure has improved over the past decade, the disorder is still associated with reduced life expectancy and frequent hospitalizations. Researchers are seeking people at least 18 years of age, and diagnosed with moderate to severe heart failure to participate in a clinical research study. The study will test whether an investigational therapy may reduce hospitalizations, increase life expectancy, lessen heart failure severity, and improve quality of life. Study participants can remain on their current medications throughout the study. Here are some things you can do to keep bad breath to a minimum. 1.Eliminate bacteria and food particles that can cause bad breath. Floss, then brush you teeth, gums and tongue after each meal. Make this easier by keeping floss, a toothbrush in handy locations, such as your office desk, in a briefcase or purse. 2.If you can’t brush and floss, rinse your mouth with water after eating to dislodge food and moisten your mouth. 3.Have you teeth cleaned and examined twice a year. 4.If you are certain you have bad breath, make an appointment to see your dentist. 5. Learn the proper way to brush and floss and practice what you learn. 6.Drink lots of liquids; especially water. 7.If you mouth feels dry, chew sugarless gum to stimulate the production of saliva. 8.You can also chew on raw parsley; it’s a natural breath freshener. 9.Baking soda is an effective odor eliminator. If you don’t mind the taste, try brushing with a mixture of baking soda and water. Or try a toothpaste that contains baking soda. 10.Tr yrinsing you mouth for one minute with a 50-50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and warm water to kill odor-causing bacteria. 11.Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol. Instead try a mouthwash that contains chlorine dioxide. This compound doesn’t just mask odor, it actually eliminates it at the source by attacking the odor-causing volatile sulfur compounds. 12. Snack on raw vegetables such as carrots, celery and red peppers. These stimulate production of saliva and might even help remove plaque from your teeth. 13.To avoid stress-related dry mouth, practice “c onscious relaxation” in stressful situations: breath deeply, visualize peaceful settings, recognize parts of your body that feel tense and consciously relax them. If you can’t get past the stress, chew sugarless gum or mints to keep saliva glands going. If you try some of these remedies and you still have bad breath, make an appointment with y our dentist. You don’t have to live with bad breath. Recognize it, treat it, then kiss it goodbye. Functional Dentures... One Good Reason To Smile! It seems to occur worse with my pumps and the pain eases as soon as I take my shoes off. I also get some burning across the ball of the foot and the same numbness what I jog. If this is the correct diagnosis, how can I treat that? Dear reader: It certainly does sound as if you are suffering from a Morton’s neuroma, also known as an interdigital nerve enlargement. It is really an inflammation of the nerve going between the heads of the third and fourth metatarsals. Although it can occur between any of the other metatarsals, this is the most common location. The symptoms you described as burning and numbness are textbook. They occur gradually and may also include a radiating electric shock. The symptoms increase with athletic activity, increased weight bearing, tight shoes (extrinsic factor) and are usually associated with biomechanical abnormalities. Faulty foot function is the primary cause of a Morton’s neuroma. Although a neuroma (like other soft tissue) cannot be seen on an x-ray, sometimes a larger space is noted between the affected metatarsals. This would indicate a larger nerve. Wo men are more prone to Morton’s neuromas because of tight-fitting, high-heeled shoes. Even ill fitting athletic shoes can cause neuroma. The symptoms of a neuroma again include burning, numbness, electrical, and radiating pain from the third inter-space to the third and fourth toes. Some patients may experience a popping or dislocation type sensation at the metaheads. Most patients will find the pain worse with shoes on and an easing of symptoms when the shoes are removed. Tr eatment is best achieved by controlling the biomechanical abnormalities of gait, by lessening the abnormal transverse motion of the forefoot. Orthotics are best used here to control the foot, especially during the mid-stance toe off portion of gait. It is here that the forefoot is most stressed. Occasionally an orthotic with a metatarsal pad or a neuroma plug is also used. Enlarged heads of the metatarsal bones can put excessive pressure on the nerve causing more chronic irritation. That’s because Thursday af- ternoon’s second meeting of the Durham Region senior boys’ bas- ketball season between the St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Monarchs and the Pickering High School Trojans was a lot like the first one, insofar as the Monarchs (4-3, league) once again blew a big lead, reeled in by the Trojans who were able to resurrect their game after getting off to a slow start. And, the result was the same, too, with the still-undefeated Trojans (7-0, league) posting a convincing 65-52 victory in their home gym over the Monarchs, who were once again left with that sinking feeling of having a potentially winnable game get away from them. In the final regular-season meeting between the teams, the Trojans successfully recov- ered from a quarter-and-a-half of suspect basketball to put the hammer down. Most of all, says Pickering High head coach Ron Par fitt, the key to the turnaround from a 20-9 deficit at the end of the first quarter and 15 points early in the second, was their ability to ramp up their defensive pressure. “We can’t let them come down and play their offence the way they want to. We had to move them out (from the basket) far- ther than they wanted to,” says Par fitt, who singled out Stephen Lopez for praise for his defensive intensity. Monarchs’ head coach Mike Gordensky’s post-game com- ments mirrored those of Parfitt’s. “They stepped up their defen- sive pressure and it took us out of our offence. We started to turn the ball over and they got some easy baskets,” says Gordensky. If there’s a lesson for his charg- es, says Gordensky, it’s that only a full, 32-minute effort will get it done against the Trojans. “They really have to play four good quarters against Pickering. The last time we played three good quarters and one bad one and lost the game. We have to play good team basketball. When we don’t, they trap us, we turn the ball over and we’re done.” Two quality wins this sea- son by the Trojans against their main Durham Region competi- tion would have most coaches cracking at least a smile. But, not Parfitt. In his words, these game are essentially meaningless. It’s the LOSSA championship game, which he fully expects to play against St. Mary, is the one that counts. “As far as the standings go, this is a nothing game,” says Parfitt. “But, it’s bragging rights. They’re all friends, so they want to be able to say we beat you this time.” For most of the first half, the Trojans struggled with their shots, as well as playing lethar- gic defence, which allowed the Monarchs to shoot a high per- centage in the early going. With the Trojans trailing 26-11 mid- way through the second quarter, a thunderous dunk by Sephton Spence, who redeemed himself after a missed dunk just seconds earlier, served as a rallying point for the Trojans. Fouled on the play, Spence sunk the free throw for the three- point play, which put the Tro- jans in flight. They went on a 7-0 run with just more than three minutes remaining in the half, shaving the deficit to six points before the St. Mary bench called a timeout. At halftime, the Mon- archs held on to a tenuous 31-24 advantage. The Trojans promptly went on a 12-0 run to open the third quarter, to open up a 36-31 lead. Pickering High would close out the quarter 46-40. A running layup by Monarchs’ Andre Tucker early in the fourth quarter cut the deficit to three points at 46-43, but that was as close as they would come as the Trojans salted away the victory. Tim Cozier led the Trojans with 21 points, followed by Da- mion Davis with 14 and Marcus Wong with 10. Sean Maingot was the Mon- archs’ top scorer with 17, fol- lowed by Duane Howard with 14. Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Monarchs’ Ryan Lerma attempts to get under Pickering High School Trojans’ Mar- cus Wong as he drives for the basket during Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) senior boys’ basketball action at Pickering High on Thursday. The Trojans netted their second win over the defending champion Monarchs this season with a 65-52 victory. Local CFLer camping in Durham for second year Alouettes’ Karikari, other pros, presiding over football camp DURHAM — A local resident and some of his Canadian Football League-playing friends are hosting a football camp through the winter months. Montreal Alouette and Pickering resident Richard Karikari will be joined by teammates Mike Botterill and Dave Stala and Hamilton Tiger- Cat Wayne Shaw for the seven-week CANallstar football camp to be hosted at indoor facilities in Whitby and Ajax, starting Feb. 19 and con- tinuing until April 11. The camp will be split into two divisions: One for those in Grade 5 to 8 and another for high schoolers in Grade 9 to 12. Karikari says there’s been a lot of interest in the camp among minor football players in the Ajax-Picker- ing Dolphins and Oshawa Hawk- eyes organizations. The camp is in its second year. Each two-hour session takes players through a series of football drills, speed training and condi- tioning. The majority of the sessions are at the Durham Indoor Soccer Cen- tre in Whitby, while some are at the Salem Indoor Soccer Centre in Ajax. This year, he played free safety and halfback for the Alouettes, who were defeated by the Toronto Argo- nauts in the CFL’s Eastern Division final. As a regular performer on the Montreal roster in his second year, Karikari chalked up an interception to go with 14 tackles. He appeared in all 18 games and the playoffs with Montreal. Karikari’s in the final year of his contract with the Als. Upon be- coming a free agent after the 2005 season, he hopes to look to the National Football League for em- ployment. “Hopefully, I’ll have a good sea- son this year. I’m still young and one of the fastest guys in Montreal. Hopefully, I’ll get the opportunity to go down there and show them what I have,” he says. Cost for the football camp is $235 per player, plus GST. The deadline for registration is Jan. 22. By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — Erik Glavic wasn’t even sure if his number would be called for Canada’s team at the Global Football Ju- nior Championships in Jackson- ville, Fla. next month. After a couple of what he con- sidered poor workouts, starting at Laurier Collegiate in Toronto on Dec. 13 and ending with three tryout sessions in Dorval, near Montreal, from Dec. 18 to 20, it came down to the last day at Dorval as a make-it-or-break-it proposition for Glavic. Luckily for the six-foot-six- inch, 196-pound quarterback with the St. Mary Catholic Sec- ondary School Monarchs, his last-day push to make the team was enough. “I’m really excited about it, but I wasn’t sure I was going to make the team,” says Glavic, 18, in an interview following a St. Mary Monarchs senior basketball game at Pickering High School on Thursday night. “Whether I play a lot or not, the experience should be a great thing.” The tryouts included more than 1,000 athletes from across Canada, with 36 selected to make the trek to Jackson- ville, where the Global Football Ju- nior Cham- pionships will be one of the many events surrounding Super Bowl XXXIX. There, the Canadian team will play against other teams from the defending champion U.S., as well as Japan, France and Mexico at Bolles School Stadium. The Canadian contingent will fly into Jacksonville on Jan. 25 and will immediately embark on a five-day training camp, ending on Jan. 31. Round-robin action, consisting of playing one quar- ter against each team. The gold- and bronze-medal games will be played on Saturday, Feb. 5. While Glavic may have pulled up his socks in time to salvage a spot on the team, he’s leaving nothing to chance from here on out. Since getting the word of making the cut, Glavic has been in a gym most days with his fa- vourite St. Mary receiver, Jesse Andrews, throwing the football. There was even one day of late when he could work out outside. “A week ago, we went outside at Pine Ridge. At the back of the end zone, it was nice and grassy, so we could run some patterns there,” says Glavic. While he’s looking forward to the competition the Global championship will bring, he’s also anticipating all the various other events surrounding the Super Bowl while in Jackson- ville. He’ll be billeted with a fam- ily from Nease High School from nearby St. Augustine, Fla. “It’s going to be quite an ex- perience. I’ll be rooming with a family. The NFL has a couple of events that we get to do. They’re going to show us around the town, go to the beach. I’m just happy to go down there more than anything,” he says. As for his own career, post- high school, Glavic says he hopes to continue playing football at the college level, following in the footsteps of his older brothers Marko, who finished a sterling career as a quarterback with the Lafayette University Leopards, and Sasha, a defensive half back with the University of Windsor Lancers. “Right now, I’m looking at the states, talking to a couple of schools. If there’s something in the states, I’ll take it. If not, I’ll play at a Canadian school.” As all players involved on the Canadian team going to the Global championships must raise $2,000 toward the trip, Glavic is looking for sponsors. If you can help, call him at 905-831-2780. The Cougars chalked up a tournament victory at the Hangar in Downsview Park on Dec. 30. In the final, the Cougars faced Wex- ford in a game that was too close to call. In fact, the Cougars finally prevailed after outscoring Wexford 4-3 on penalty kicks. After regulation time, the game remained scoreless, which brought up penalty kicks. In the semifinal, the Pickering Cougars defeat- ed Glen Shields 2-0. The Cougars faced Brampton in Game 1, win- ning 2-0. They played Wex- ford in the second game and lost 1-0 on a late goal. The setback seemed to wake up the Cougars. Pick- ering needed a win in its third game to advance to the semifinal. The Cougars soared past the Toronto Eagles 3-0. Meanwhile, Pickering also captured the title at the Durham Indoor Soc- cer Club Holiday Tourna- ment on Dec. 27. The Cou- gars ended up in the finals against Oshawa. Despite not playing its best game, Pickering played Oshawa to a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time. The final was decided on penalty kicks, with the Cougars coming out on top, 4-3. The Cougars played their arch-rival Ajax Strikers in an exciting first game and won 2-1. The Cougars played well and took the play to Ajax for most of the game. The Strikers scored with less than a minute to play to make the score close. The Cougars then faced Waterloo and won 4-0 in Game 2. The Durham and Downs- view titles represented the sixth titles out of nine tour- naments this season.
