Pickering Mayor George Ashe was on hand (right) to greet
the Iranian PM. An Iranian newswoman who hails from

With one small addition and
one deletion the Pickering
Taxicab By -Law finally
passed Council this week.
Added was a paragraph
stating that all taxi owners
and drivers would receive,
and have to sign for, a copy
of the new By -Law. Deleted
was a section stating that
taxi owners would have to
personally operate their
vehicles a minimum of 20

over any two month period.
This section was debated at
lenght at a Saturday,
December 7th, meeting of 3
Council. The main reason for
its inclusion in the By -Law,
according to Councillor Don
Kitchen, had been to en-
courage people applying for
licences to make the taxi
industry their main
business, and not a side
business. At one stage during
the previous debate, it had
even been suggested that the
number of hours should be
48.
Mayor George Ashe
commented that so many
Councillors were apparently
havi ng a change of heart
about this matter that he
found it hard to believe that
they had all been at the same
meeting on December 7th.
He said that, at that time, he
had had to be convinced
about the inclusion of the 20
hours section. Having been
convince. he was not now
prepared to change his mind.
Councillor Ken Matheson.

Christmas With

Turkey, first class en-

entertained the Kinsmen

entertained while the Kin -

served 287 piping hot Turkey
Dinners to members of the 5
area Senior Citizens Chubs.
The head table guests in-
cluded M.P.P. Bill Newman,
Mayor George Ashe and
Deputy Governor Kin Jack
Pollard.
The revelry started at 3
p.m. Sunday as buses and
cars loaded with Seniors
from the age of 60 to 92
arrived at Sheridan Mall.
After much cornfusion at the
coat -check. Al Ward and the
Revellers led the carolling
and in just a few minutes the
mood for the day was set.
Everyone was having fun
and even some of the
younger set (71 years Young
) decided that - yes, one can
dance to card singing.
For the next six hours the
smiles that blossomed at 3
p.m. grew and grew as the
Kinsmen realized that by
giving so little to so few they
personally understood the
true meaning of Christmas -
Tts more fun to give then to
receive.

why,
Mr. Didier could possibly
represent Canada at the
international Chef's Com-
petition in 1976, held once
every four years. Selection
of the Canadian team will
begin soon. Two years ago,
in Munich. Canada's team of
gourmet cooks placed fourth
hest in the world: an ex-
cellent showing for a country
which has cantered only
twice.
Apprentice chefs are a
necessary part (if the

them, the art of superb
cuisine would eventually be
lost. Certificates were
presented to top apprentices
Daniel Lee, Stephen
Wallace, Paul King, Shu-
Tak-Tam, Terry Vorsell.
Thomas ('assay, Bruce
Sparkes. Leonard Elichuk,
Gregory La Gamba, Michael
Maloney and Michael Mc-

Landing the Escoffier Club
Award as top basic ap-

from Niagara Falls. The son
of a chef. Mr. Reitz is
following a family tradition.

Pickering Golf 0 - Firefighters 1
One goal was enough to let the firemen pick up two points as
their net man shutout the golfers who seemed to have trouble
mounting any sort of an attack. Gaol scorer was #12 Kin-
niburg assist to a9 Hewey.
Bry-Ron 4 - K & T Tigers 1
K & T t ook a I goal lead and looked real strong all during the
Ist period until 2 quick goals 30 seconds apart put them
behind on the score board then two more quick goals in the
3rd salted the game away for Bry-Ron. Lone goal for the
Tigers went to O'Brien from Peters. For Bry-Ron Donnel
picked up 2 plus an assist. Thoss 2 and Ritchie l assist.
Sears3-K—Mart 2
tThis was areal exciting game with action around both nets.
A little bad luck at the three minute mark of the Ist period
saw K—Mart rap one off the goal post. Goals for Sears
Kruger, Kemp, Thompson, assists Kruger, Kemp. For K—
Mart Hettick and Mackie Pound Lad 2 assists.

Carpet Corral 1 - Thunderbird 0
A real heartbreaker for the Thunderbird goalie B. McKenzie
who played a super game only to see his team scramble in
front of him at the 19:02 mark of the 3rd period and the puck
came out from a lot of legs into the net. This was the most
exciting of the five game and well worth staying behind to
watch. Goal for C.C. 416 Morrison.

Stepping Stones To
Happiness For Buckingham
by Sheila White
Wayne Buckingham's new
career began on April Fool's
Day.
The 30 -year-old artist left
his management position at
a major greeting card
company to follow a dream.
The dream was to form a
company which would give
Canadians attractive
products at reasonable
prices.
With the help of several
gifted partners, Stepping
Stones was born.
The truly unique thing
about the company is that it
is completely Canadian.
These days, very few people
would go out on a financial
limb.
"I was fed up with
American -owned companies
and corporations," said Mr.
Buckingham, who gave up
$15.000 a year for his own
beliefs.
"At Stepping Stones, our
aim is to promote Canadian
art in reproductive sense. -
What has Stepping Stones
done for itself in the first
year'
A year ago March, they
went to :Halton Gift Show
%•here they received 'a warm
response.' Some 52.000 worth
of sample products were sold
at the show. Here was prod
that people wanted what
Stepping Stones would
market.
A few months ago. the
company received an award
at the National Gift Show for
the best display. From l.000
invited participants, Step-
ping Stones won the prize for
the most innovative and
attractive booth.
And just last week. one of
Canada's fastest rising
artists, Jim Bessey, agreed
to have his country scenes
reproduce exclusively by the
all -Canadian firm.
Mr. Bessey is another man
who took a gamble on his
own abilities. At 49 years of
age, he left his hectic
executive job with the
Canadian Gas Association to
take up painting. something
he had never done
professionally but always
wanted to try.
The 'Ramble' paid off. Now.
he is quickly gaining
recognition in art circles
across the nation. His water
colour designs are typically
Canadian. The scenes Jim
captures are familiar to us
all. a young maple tree in
the heart of the sugar bush, a
broken down snow fence
protecting an old deserted
barn. dandelions dotting a
farmer's field --scenes in
nature that are beautiful and
moving. His landscapes
depict the country he loves -
Canada.
This is why Jim Bessey
would only trust Wayne
Buckingham and Co. with his
works. He knows they would
not be exploited and would
get to the consumers to
whom they were aimed.
Stepping Stones took Mr.
Bessey's paintings and
reproduced them onto at-
tractive hasty notes,
available at some retail
stores and at the Stepping
Stones showroom at 230 Don
Park Rd., Unit I1, 1 block
north of Steeles on Wood-
bine.
A calendar is in the plan -
rang stages for 1976.

It was Stouffville that
started Wayne to thinking he
could make it on his own.
An old 19th century book,
covered with dust in an
obscure corner of a book
stall at the sales, provided
Wayne with many nostalgia
pictures to work with.
After experimenting with
several techniques. Mr.
Buckingham came up with
reporductions on parchment,
Posters. hasty notes and
greeting cards. Also offered
to the public are brass

Step into Stepping Stones
and you will admit that the
display is lad out tastefully
with the artists hand and
eye.
Wayne and his partners, a
six -man team of experts in
their fields, decorated the
room with old farm in-
struments. A full-size wagon
is f filled with Bessey
greeting cards, and barn -
board and barrels prove that
Wayne is a country lover. He
balks away from the
traditional display ideas like
shelves and racks.
