What Happens To Pickering Name?

What will happen to the historic name of Pickering when the
Township is carved and reshaped to fit the proposal for
;regional government, as outlined by Charles S. Mac -
Naughton, Treasurer. of Ontario and Minister of In-
tergovernmental Affairs and Donald Irvine, his
parliamentary assistant, on Mon. Dec. 18th in Oshawa?
The answer lies with aplebiscitethat will be held along with
the municipal and regional elections which the government
hopes can be held next fall. Jan. lst, 1974 is the target date for
the new government to come into effect. The proposal,
which amalgamates 22 municipalities into nine, is to be
discussed by provincial representatives and municipal
leaders from now until the end of February. During that
time, Mr. MacNaughton will accept breifs on the subject
from all interested parties.
If the government proposal is accepted by the
municipalities, part of Pickering Township, the Town of Ajax
,and Pickering Village will be amalgamated to form
Municipality oil. The western boundary for the new
municipality cuts off the West Rouge area, which will go to
Scarborough, and excludes the North Pickering Community
and airport area, which is designated as Municipality 09 in
the proposal. The northern boundary is Concession 7, the
eastern boundary is unchanged and on the south is Lake
Ontario.
The government's rationale for these boundaries is that
these southern areas will be growing at a very fast rate and
that their growth should be co-ordinated. It was felt West
Rouge has little in common with Pickering.
That part of the township north of the seventh concession
becomes, in the proposal, a part of the new municipality of
Uxbridge. Marked as Municipality x 7, Uxbridge will include
all of the present township, except for the extreme southwest
corner which will go to Whitchurch-Stouffville, the Town of
Uxbridge, and the northern three lots of Pickering Township,
excepting the airport area. This is largely a rural area and is
expected to remain so for some time.
The population in Municipality N1 is 35,600, the second
largest of the nine municipaliities planned for the two-tier
system of government. Municipality *7 has a population of
7,607.

have four regional representatives. Municipality #7 would
have one. Representation is by population, with each
regional councillor representing an average of 7,120 people,
slightly fewer in rural areas.
The province will appoint the first chairman. Thereafter, he
will be chosen by the elected representatives.
Regional councillors would sit on the municipal council as
well. In addition, the municipal council would have strictly
local councillors. The local council for Municipality Nl would
consist of one local and three regional councillors, plus the
head of council. Municipality o7 would have four local
councillors, the head of council being the only representative
to the regional council.

1. When purchasing
decorative lighting sets and
electrical appliances be sure
they bear the Canadian
Standards Association seal
of approval. The large "C"
encs-6ing the letters "SA„
meats that your purchases

approval tests of CSA which
have been established for
your protection.
2. Store the tree in a cool
place until you put it up.
3. Keep it in a water filled
container.
4. Do not block an exit with
the tree.

naments and such things as
cotton batting for
decorations are fireproof.
6. Check both indoor and
outdoor tree -lighting
equipment for frayed wires,
cracked or brittle insulation,
broken lamp sockets or
damaged plugs. Throw away
and replace deteriorated
lighting sets.
7. Avoid overloading elec-
trical circuits with holiday
lighting.
8. If a fuse blows, check first
for defects in the lighting
sets. If the trouble persists,
call an electrical contractor
for assistance.
9. Turn off the lights when
you go out or leave the room.
10. Never use electric lights
on metal Christmas trees
and keep metal icicles away
from lighting sets.
When you purchase new
appliances or electrical toys
as gifts examine each device
for the CSA mark of ap-
proval.

Green River And Whitevale News
STORE CLOSING
"Baxendale's " Green River's only store for the past couple
of years, closed down three weeks ago. Its closing marks the
end of 27 years of service to the community. In selling to the
North Pickering Community Development Project,
proprietor Mrs. Olive MacKay, said she's had enough.
Mrs. Baxendale, Olive MacKay's mother, bought the
Ferrier homestead in 1939. The house was then 100 years old.
When the family's attempts at farming proved tmstncceaaful,
they remodelled the house to accommodate the store which
opned in 1945. An addition was put on to house the coffee shop.
Mrs. MacKay largely ran the store and coffee shop and her
step -father the butcher shop. She continued to no the but-
cher shop after his death but gave it up last January because
she found it was too much for a woman to hate ie. The coffee
shop was also closed but for the permy-candy trade there
continued to be an interesting variety.
On Sat. Dec. 16th, the store ruttures and most of Mrs.
MacKay's furniture we. on the auction block. (The sale's
success was hampered somewhat by the cold and blustery
weather.) The rest of her furniture will be going along with
her to a Toronto apartment.

An organizational meeting for the "Sewing With Knits"
course will be held at the home of Mrs. Florence Elliott in
Brougham cold Brock Road off Highway 7) on Jan. 3rd about
2 p.m.
One purpose of the meeting will be to arrange a suitable
date for the course, offered free -of -charge by the Women's
Institute. Instead of running the course for 2 full days, it will
be divided into 4 or 5 afternoon (I to 4 p.m.) sessions.
So far. 17 women have indicated they will attend the course
which will likely be held in the Brougham church pasement.
4-H CLUB
On Sat. Dec. 16th, the Brougham 4-H Homemaking Club
participated in the achievement day activities, featuring
Creative Block Printing held at Whitby Senior Public School.
The morning activities included a quiz, discussion group
and reports on block printing. Parents and friends were
invited to attend the afternoon program.
The 12 members, Elizabeth Harden, Pam Shirk, Alma
Wilson. Marie Maniw. Elizabeth Pronto. Carol Miller. Bonnie

McGregor, Laura Johnston, Gail Johnston, Vicki Marsland,
Debbie Gray and Nancy Gray presented a skit. Dressed as
mischievous elves, they demonstrated the various methods
of block printing in a humorous way. The skit was chosen as
the best of the nine performed and the group was advised to
show it wherever possible.
Each girl received a sterling silver teaspoon for completing
the project. Marie Maniw received County honours,
Elizabeth Harden and Pam Shirk received provincial
honours. Judges were three hone economists from the
Department of Agriculture.

Busy Time For Senior Citizens
The Range Riffs Senior
Citizens are on the go again.
Last Thurs., 34 members
went on a stopping trip to
Yorkdale. The colorful
Christmas decorations in the
mall were very much ap-
preciated by the group.
On Fri. evening, 65 persons
sat down to a delicious
Christmas dinner, catered
by the Tops Club.
The honoured guests were:
Mr. and Mrs. J. Evans, and
Mrs. and Mrs. John Elliott.
Mrs. Harding, Mrs.
Stratton, Mrs. Quibe1, and
Mr. and Mrs. C. Banks (the
club's favourite bus driver)
were unable to attend.
Mr. Elliot, dressed in his
kilt, was most entertaining
with his Scottish songs, and
jokes.
Miss Joyce McDonald and
Mr. John Elliott Jr. played
the bag pipes, and everyone
who wasn't a Scot wished
that he was.
The music of the Pipes
heralded Santa's arrival.
and the jolly fat man
dispensed gifts and kisses to
everyone.
The evening ended with a
draw for a pretty quilt made
by Mrs. R. E. Hollinger and
donated by Mrs. France and
Mrs. Vick.

and a pair of pillow slips
donated by Mrs. Staples for

Mrs. Dicks of Scarborough.

The 4-H club is open to any girl between the age of 12 and 26
and new members are welcome. The spring project will start
at the end of January.
Theme for the 6 to 8 week course will be "Cottons Will Be
Smart", teaching the girls to put finishing touches on cotton
dresses. Each girl will make a dress. The club meets at the
Brougham church, usually Saturday mornings. Time and
day is open to change, depending on members preference.
EQUESTRIAN
Wendy Allen, who has been taking riding lessons for the past
:six months, won her Heather Heights Badge on Sunday. To
earn her badge, she had to name 87 parts of a horse, mount
and dismount, canter in figure eights, post and sit trot in
figure eights. Her knowledge of tack and grooming was
tested as well.
Since October, Wendy has been the proud owner of "Inca" a
10 -year-old buckskin coloured hunter mare. Inca is a boarder
at Heather Heights Stable.
Wendy is the 13 -year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill
Allen.

TOWNSHIP PROGRAMS
Can't speak for other townships, but it would appear that
ours is destined to be known as peppy. perky. Pickering!
There is just so much going on that no one need wonder what
to do with leisure time. Everything from Art, Ballet and
Basketball to Upholstering and Yoga, with such interesting
subjects in between as Horseback Riding and Karate, are on
the community programs offered to all ages.
So get involved. Join a class. Learn something new. For
more information please call 839-5103.
CHANGE OF PACE
Nurses and other members of the Altamont Nursing Home
Staff had the opportunity of changing from their uniforms
into something softer and prettier as they joined with escorts
and friends to enjoy the annual Christmas Dance on Sat. Dec.
9th. This social event took place at Woodlands Community
Hall, and decorations included a most attractive tree along
with other festive garlands.
Among those present were Administrator Douglas A. Archer
and his charming wife. Elsie: Director of Nursing Marion
Oldfield and husband Don: and that amazing gal, Pat Stacey,
just released from hospital along with husband Fred.
Much credit is due to Mrs. Margaret Bibb• organizer of the
Christmas Dance for the past seven years, for another very

SANTA PARADE
A round of applause to the Bay Ridges Kinsmen Club for the
splendid Santa Claus Parade which they organized along
with local merchants on Sat. Dec. 11th. The parade was the
largest seen to date in this area, and included 37 entries with
more than 600 participants.
First Prize for the Best Float - "Sesame Street" was
.awarded to the Kinsmen Club of Ajax, with Second Prize
going to the Pickering Township Parks and Recreation Dept.

-INVITATION TO DINNER
A nice gesture by the staff of Altamont Nursing Home is the
annual Volunteers' Dinner at which time various people who
have assisted during the year, are invited to dinner.
As in the past, this year's event took place in the beautifully
decorated main dining room with all preparations carried
out by staff members. Administrator D.A. Archer expressed
their appeciation to those present.
Later Rev. Walter Dyer, acconnpanied by Mrs. Ruth
Bloemink at the piano, led the group in singing Christmas
carols.
GARBAGE AND STUFF
Following the big unwrapping spree on Christmas morning
which is Monday this year, please stow all the papers and bits
safeh• until Tues. Der. 36th for pick-up. Satre the following
week with the bottles, cracker boxes. etc. left over from the
New Year celebrations.
HOCKEY
Teams have been active in recent weeks, and here are some
of the results:
On Sat. Dec. 9th at Bowmarrvine. West Rouge "Blackhorn
Steak Haase" Novices were defeated by Bowmanville 6 to 1.
The "Blackhorns" opened the scoring in the first period an a
goal by James Roberts assisted by Dirk Rueter. The West
Rouge team then quit skating and checking in the last two
periods and BoNwmariville completely dominated the play and
pumped hoax six goals for the win.
On Mon. Dec. 11th at Don Beer Arena. West Rouge
..Blackhorns'. played a better game in defeating Maple Leafs
of the Oshawa Little N.H.L. by a were of 2 too.
Kest Rouge took a one goal lead in the fust period on an
unassisted goal by Team Captain Dirk Rueter. The game see-
sawed back and forth for the next two periods. With less than
a minute remaining in the game. the "Blckhorns" were
penalized for tripping. and the Oshawa team pulled their
goalie in favour of an extra attacker. The move in this in-
stance backfired when Dirk Rueter scored into an empty goal
to put the game out of reach.
!Nark Robinson and Glen Chambers shared the shutout. but
all numbers of the "Blackhocns" played well in earning the
win.
At Ajax on Dec. 12th. Ajax Novices came on strongly in the
second and third periods to defeat West Rouge "Blackhorns"
by a 4 to 2 score in a well played game. The "BLackhornrs"
opened an early two -goal lead on scores by Gerry Deighan
assisted by Dirk Rueter and Brian Ridding. and the serorud
goal by Ricky MacLaren assisted by Stuart Cruickshank.
The Ajax boys came back with four unaswered goals to earn
the win.
At Newcastle on Dec 14th. Playing their fourth game in six
days, the West Rouge ••Blackhorns" held on to defeat a
hustling Newcastle team 3 to 2. The "Blackhorns" once again
jumped into a two -goal lead in the first period on two
unassisted goals by Dirt Rueter. The Home Team outplayed
West Rouge by a wide margin in the second period and were
able to tie the score. In a wide open third period. West Rouge
finalh• scored when James Roberts deflected a shot past the
Newcastle goalie. Ricky Maclaren and Dirk Rueter assisted
on the winning tally.
LADIES CLUB
The West Rouge Ladies Club wound up the current year in
fine style with a Fondue Festival held at the home of
President Audrey Crites on Thurs. Dec. 14th.
About 20 ladies enjoyed a pleasant evening and briefly
discussed plans for 1973. Watch for more news in January.
HOLIDAY SKIING.
If the weatherman co-operates and provides sufficient
snow•, there will be a special Holiday Course in Cross -Country
Skiing for the entire family sponsored by the Township of
Pickering Recreation Dept.
Dates are Dec. 26th. 27th. 28th and 29th from 1 to 4 p.m. at
the West Rouge Golf Course. Fee is just $6.00 each. Sounds
like a great idea fora last-minute extra gift.

If this week's column seems to contain ' .tems con-
cerning the Altamont Nursing Home, it is p. ,,oaoly because it
is one of the most swinging places in ou especially at
the holiday season.
On Wed. Dec. 13th member., f Rythm Rascals Band
enjoyed a Christmas Luncheon with their friends at St.
Margarets- in -the -Pines Church. The annual Residents'
Christmas Party was held at Altamont in the evening of the
same date.
"Santa". effectively portrayed by David Stacey, presented
each person with a gift and other goodies. Later, the Rhythm
Rascals gave another of their toe -tapping performances,
much to the delight of all. Assisting and adding to the out-
standing success of this event, which was attended by ap-
proximately _xm people. were the young ladies from the Beta
Sigma Phi Sorority of Scarborough under the direction of
hlarih•n Durnford.
While the Volunteers' Dinner was in progress on Dec. 11th, a
group of eight young people associated with Grace
Presbyterian Church, entertained residents in the Lounge
with singing and guitar -playing.
Many other young folks have brought a little cheer into the
lives of the older ones, and while they all try to avoid
publicity it is hoped that a few details will be reported later
on.
COUPLES CLUB
Another delightful party took place on Fri. Dec. 8th when 46
members of the Grace Church Couples Club met at the
church hall for their annual Christmas Pot Luck Supper.
Following the appeasement of appetites, a round of carol
singing was enjoyed by all.
Details regarding the January meeting could not be con-
firmed at this time, so please watch for a later an-
nouncement.
SAILING
At this time of the year when we are sloshing through the
snow, grumbling about the cold, and up to our eyeballs
in Christmas preparations. isn't it nice to stop for a mite
and think ahead to the boating season'nu

Sailing enthusiasts in our area will be pleased to know that
the Whitbv Yacht Club will host the 1973 World "Thun-
derbird" Championships, with entrants coming from all over
the globe.
Organized just seven years ago with less than a dozen
members obtaining the charter• this club currently has an
enrolment of well over 2D0 and is looking forward to a busy
and exciting year ahead.
So go on back to your winter activities for now, but watch for
more details of coming boating events.
REMINDERS
As the year end approaches with its accompanying
celebrations, man items are apt to be lost in the shuffle. And

John Kruger, president of
the West Rouge Ratepayers
Association, said he could
not speak for the Association
on the area's proposed
amalgamation with Scar-
borough until after a general
meeting, scheduled for early
in the new year.
At this meeting, the
ratepayers will research the
proposal and try to decide
what is best for the area. He
said the association will be
guided by a plebiscite it
hopes the Pickering
Township Council will hold.
Mr. Kruger said his initial
reaction to the proposal was
for West Rouge to stay with
the Township but after
studying it more carefully,
he had serious doubts. He
feels a region 65 miles in
length and six times the area
of Metro doesn't make any
sense there is no com-
munity of interest.
He sees new problems being
created by the proposed
houndary changes. For West
Rouge the problem could be
in the switch to a different
school board, for the
remainder of the Township.

Keeping with the festive season, I thought, in this week's
edition of the "Quiet Corner", we would try and add a little
humor and maybe a little adlibbing for what it's worth. "O
Come. All ye Faithful. Joyful and Triumphant" and don't
forget our _tearful and defeated" as this week we seem to
have an over -abundance of those.
Our P.M.A. Realty sponsored Mite club must have been out
with the "Shepherds Watching Their Flocks By Night" for
they sure didn't have it Sunday morning, slumbering through
a 7 to 0 defeat at the hands of St. Martin de Porres.
In other Mite play, our Harry Kent Realty boys were singing
"Glory to the Newborn King" as two boys stoodout in their 2
to 2 draw with St. Martin de Porres. Robbie Lowttit was a
standout in goal and once again Don Fraser pounded the
necessary markers.
Strains of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" could be heard
from the homes of our Simpsons Sears sponsored Tykes as
they came up winners 5 to 2 over yet another St. Martin de
Porres club. Scoring in this one were Raymond Burke, Gary
Milroy. Steven Tayler, Bobby Smith and Brendan Catney.
It was ou^ Pickering Nursery Tyke club who "Decked the
Halls With Boughs of Holly" after their tremendous 2 to 1 win
over Corpus Christie. Terry Fitzpatrick chipped in both goals
in this thriller.
"It Came Upon a :Midnight Clear" as well as many from the
S.C.H.L that our Rays Smoke and Gift Shop Minor Atom club
are the club to beat as their 6 to 2 triumph over St. Rose would
indicate. Shawn Devlin was the big gun rapping in four big
ones while Dennis Fraser and Michael Smith added singles.
Our Unistrut of Ontario sponsored Minor Atoms played a
whale of a game against top contender St. Johns but lost out
with one minute remaining 2 to 1. Stephen Bond was our
' Star of Wonder. Star of Light" banging in the lone marker.
Atom Action saw our George A Harding club "in Fields
Where They Lay Keeping Their Sheep" but not their checks
in 2 too loss to St. Martin de Porres.
"Joy To The World" our Consumers Gas sponsored Pee
Wees won their first game of the year, upsetting St.
Lawrence 3 to 1. David Madden romped in to start things
rolling. Then Kevin McCarthy and Michael O'Sullivan
rounded out the scoring.
..God Rest You :Merry Gentlemen. Let Nothing You
Dismay' for both our Minor Bantam clubs played sound
hockey. but came away losers. Our Cy Wilson Ford Saks
were down 3 to o to the top club, St. Rose but came storming
bard with goals by Joe Catney and Neil Delgarno, then they
ran out of time and had to settle for a 3 to 2 loss. Our Royal
Home Improvement club had St. Maria Goretti tied 1 to 1 on a
goal by Steven Routh• but again lost out in the dying minutes.

Our Scotts Kentucky Fried Chicken Midgets had a bye this
week and were "Away In a Manger" contemplating their
strategy for their second half drive come the new year. So all
in all it was kind of a "Silent NighC in most homes throughout

beaten by Ashe's Deputies. Claire Reed was in her very best
form scoring nine of the Deputies 12 goals. Vern Broughton
took over coaching of the Lions Club team. Unfortunately
PMA prevented his team from winning its first game. PMA
Minor Bantams Shut -Out Stouffville
Bay Ridges Cable TV Minor Bantams shut out Stouffville 3
too on Sunday. December loth. Goal scorers were Don Rowe,
Garry Dunning and Steven Cook with assists from Scott
Healey, Allan Ribee, Chris Hill, Bob Amorini and Mark
Diotte. Don Rowe turned in an excellent two way game for
the TV boys. last Wednesday, they ran into some tough
competition against Dorset Park. The scare was 6 to 2 for
Dorset Park with goals for Cable TV corning from Mike
Nagle and Don Rowe. They take on Bowmanville on Wed-
nesday at 8:30 and then travel to Uxbridge on Saturday at 4
p.m.
Knob Hill Farms Minor Novice played a strong game
against the MTHL Toronto Voyageurs who came from behind
to tie things up in the last few minutes of play to earn a 4 to 4
tie. Scoring was handled by Craig Kitchener with 2 goals and
an assist, Kevin Stamco assisted by Stu Catterall and Bobby
Graham, and Warren Court assisted by Paul Corcoran. On
Tuesday the team hosted a Chinguacousy Double A squad
who tied the score at 2 to 2 in the last minute of play in an
exciting game. Scoring was by Craig Kitchener with assists
going to Don Perkins and Warren Court, and by Don Perkins
assisted by Keith Talbot.
On Wednesday the team travelled to Bowmanvdle for
league play and showed their power in winning 9 to 0. Keith
Talbot was the big gun in this one with 4 goals, while Don
Perkins popped in 1 and earned 3 assists. Craig Kitchener
was right in there with a goal and an assist and singles went
to Bob Graham, Paul Corcoran and Stu Catterall. Assists
also to Doug Beatty, Bob Faragher and Kevin Stamco. This
was the 20th straight without a loss for coach Ron Perkins'
high flying group. In the next home game on December 19th,
the Bay boys take on a powerhouse from Peterborough.
Arnold Paving Minor Pre Wee. After a slow first period
last Thursday. Arnold Paving opened up in the second and
third and downed the bigger Uxbridge team 4 to 1. Goals
were by Greg Hiltz, Marc Stamco, Paul Reid and Bob
Williams, with assists by Jason Van lar, Curtis Wolowich,
Jim Mcilroy and Mike Bridgeman. Arnold Paving take on
Markham on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Don Beer.
Scott's Chicken Vilia Pee Wee looked very flat last week
dropping both games, an exhibition game against Oshawa
Dines 6 to 2 and a league game in Bowmanville 9 to o. Mark
DosSanto6 scored the two markers for the Chicken Villa
boys.
Sheridan Mall Mirror Midget struggled to a 3 to 3 tie with
Port Hope last Wednesday. Kim Rasmussen, Paul Omelon
and Terry Morrison were the goal scorers withassistsgoing to
Billie Stone, Morrison, Melnyck and Omelon. This Wed-
nesday, Sheridan Mall take on Port Perry at 9 p.m. at Don
Beer arena.
Big M. Novices are number one in the league standings with
one game left to play befure the playoffs. In exhibition play
last Thursday, Big M handled Wexford 5 to 2. Kyle Shore was
the big goal getter with 4, with the other goal coming from
defencemen David Fretz. Assists came from Joey Ver•noy 2,
and Glen Healey as well as some outstanding play between
the pipesgot himself an assist. Big M take on Bowmanvdle in
exhibition play at 7 p.m. on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Royal Home Improvement Juveniles dropped Ajax 5 to 3
last Tuesday. John LaRoche was the big gun with two goals,
and Dan Catto, Gord Brown and Tom Turner each scoring
singles.
P.M.A. Bantams in a bit of a slump dropped both games last
week, one to Bowmanville 6 to 1 on Sunday, Dec. loth and
another to Whitby last Saturday 6 to 2. Goals for P.M.A. in
these games were from David Coburn 2, and David LeBlanc
with assists going to Terry White, Kevin Hillis and Mike
