Linda Zaks-Walker, former prin- cipal of E. B. Phin Public School in Pickering, is on a work transfer to the Ontario College of Teachers as a manager for the Teach in Ontario project. Funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universi- ties, the initiative is designed to help foreign-trained teachers learn what they need to teach in Ontario and eventually get accreditation. “Ontario seems to be a place where immigrants come,” she says. “There are a number of interna- tionally-trained teachers who for a number of reasons have not been able to get accreditation. Some- times it’s being able to get docu- ments from the country where they were trained, and sometimes it’s not knowing enough about the On- tario education system.” Ms. Zaks-Walker says in addition to helping foreign-trained teachers get a job in their field here, the project is intended to help address the teacher shortage in Ontario schools, especially in subject areas like math, chemistry, technology and French. As well, Ontario class- rooms are becoming more and No parole eligibility for 25 years By Jeff Mitchell Staff Writer DURHAM — Former Picker- ing resident Sean Hall has been sentenced to life in prison for the “s enseless” murder of a victim char- acterized by the Crown as a “totally innocent man”. Mr. Hall, who was found guilty by a jury Nov. 14, will spend 25 years in penitentiary before being eligible for parole. The sentence was hand- ed down Friday by Ontario Superior Court Justice Donald Ferguson. The 29-year-old was also sen- tenced to eight years for his role in a home invasion robbery that started the chain of events leading to the murder on Feb. 4, 2001 of 28-year-old Ajax resident Roy Jones. Mr. Hall also received five years for conspiracy to commit murder. The sentences are to be served concur- rently with the life sentence. The judge heard a number of victim impact statements Friday, including one submitted by Mr. Jones’s mother, Carmen. “I wanted to see my son find a wonderful wife, marry, and have a family,” Ms. Jones said. “Now, I am the mother of a murdered son.” Mr. Jones was shot outside his family’s home on a cold February night, just days before he was sched- uled to testify as a Crown witness against a friend of Mr. Hall’s, who faced several years in prison for his part in the home invasion robbery. That man, who can’t be named under a publication ban, is to stand trial for his part in Mr. Jones’s mur- der next year. During the seven-month trial, the Crown relied largely on secretly-re- corded audio and video tapes made by Durham Regional Police under- cover officers, on which Mr. Hall bragged he was the “brains” behind the plot to find and kill Mr. Jones. When he took the stand in his own defence this fall, Mr. Hall said he was “bigging up” — lying and exaggerating — to impress the cops, whom he believed were accom- plished criminals. Mr. Hall, who spoke almost non- stop on the tapes played for the jury, was at a loss for words when given the opportunity to speak before the sentence was passed. “Your Honour, at this point, I don’t even know what to say.” 905-686-2445905-6 8 6 -2 4 4 5 VISIT OUR SHOWROOM 239 STATION STREET239 S T A T I O N S T R E E T (South of the 401 off Harwood Avenue) FROM www.blaisdale.com 12 mths - grade 8 5 Campuses in Durham Call Head Office 905-509-5005 Blaisdale MONTESSORI School Best Private School Pre-Toddler Program (12 months - 18 months) SPACES AVAILABLE IN AJAX & PICKERING NEW Life sentence for Jones murder ✦ See Educators page 2 SENIORS’ SHOWTIME Tr oubadours’ Christmas concert offers ‘Let’s Go to the Movies’ Forever Young 10 RAIDERS ICED Mississauga stops Ajax-Pickering squad Sports 17 THE AIR UP THERE A.J. A large part of the program is providing the information prospec- tive teachers require, ensuring it is easily accessible and up to date, “kind of like one-stop shopping for education,” Ms. Zaks-Walker says. One section has specifics on many countries so that an Indian teacher, for example, can quickly find out what particular document outlining her credentials she needs from that country. As well, there are three consulta- tion centres in the province, two in To ronto and one in Ottawa, provid- ing direct, one-on-one service. If speaking English well is a bar- rier, the project offers language assessments so clients can gauge what they need to do to improve. Ms. Zaks-Walker says the project is scheduled to end in December 2005, but she hopes it will con- tinue. In just a few months, she says Teach in Ontario has already helped over 2,000 people on the road to becoming an Ontario teacher. “This project is a win-win for everybody,” she says. “I think that’s one of the wonderful benefits of it.” For more information on the project, visit www.teachinontario. ca. Educators from outside Canada receive help gaining eligibility to teach in province ✦ Educators from page 1 Ajax High School ties on white ribbons to increase awareness By Jillian Follert Staff Writer DURHAM — Hardly a night goes by that the 27 emergency beds at Denise House are not filled with women and children fleeing do- mestic violence. Director Sandra McCormack says this harsh reality hasn’t changed much since the Oshawa safe haven opened its doors 20 years ago, noting that a similar story unfolds every night at Dur- ham’s other two shelters. “Between the three shelters here in Durham, there are about 85 cri- sis beds, and there is rarely a time that they’re not all filled,” she says. “There is the misconception out there that violence against women is happening less, but from where I stand that isn’t true.” One thing that has changed in the last 20 years, is an increase in public awareness campaigns. This year, community groups and high schools across Durham Region will take part in the annual White Ribbon Campaign, a national ini- tiative organized by men to stop violence against women. Posters featuring young men’s faces and the words “my strength is not for hurting,” will be dis- played from Nov. 29 to Dec. 6, and white ribbons will be available for a donation to shelters, crisis cen- tres and anti-violence education. The week culminates with Canada’s National Day of Remem- brance and Action on Violence Against Women. This year, Dec. 6 marks the 15th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, which saw 14 female students gunned down at Montreal’s École Polytechnique. Ajax High School is one of several in the region that will be taking part in the campaign. Stu- dents from the school’s Culture of Peace Committee will help raise awareness by accepting donations for white ribbons, gathering sig- natures on a poster condemning violence, and making daily an- nouncements that include local violence statistics. “It’s critical to raise this issue with young men, so it becomes something they carry with them through their lives,” explains Erin Crawford, one of the teachers be- hind the Ajax High School cam- paign. “Last year it was amazing to see how many guys signed the pledge against violence and en- couraged other guys to sign too... they took it very seriously, which is what we hope for every year.” While the focus is on male students, she said the campaign also encourages female victims to speak out about their experiences. Esther Enyolu, executive direc- tor of the Women’s Multicultural Resource and Counselling Centre of Durham agrees, stressing that Durham Region has one of the highest rates of intimate femicide in the province. “I see it first-hand every day, the trauma and the fear that both the women and their children experi- ence,” she says. “The only way to stop it is to keep going with the public education. Sometimes it seems discouraging, but we can’t give up.” Durham residents can attend a candlelight dinner and vigil to mark the national day of remem- brance, on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. at the CAW Local 222 Union Hall in Os- hawa. Tickets, which are available at the hall, are $30 with proceeds going to the YWCA of Durham. A recent fire at the shelter, which houses more than 50 homeless women and children, left the re- cently renovated building smoke and water damaged. It was an effective tool in its arsenal to combat drunk driving during the holiday season. Again this year, the force is publishing the names of people accused of driving drunk during the month-long Reduce Im- paired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) campaign. Names of the accused will be reported in releases available on the Durham police website. The first year using this tool resulted in the force charg- ing fewer people, despite stopping 3,000 more vehicles. The controversial decision to publish the names resulted in 50 motorists having their names plastered on the police web- site. Hats off to Durham officers for using every possible tool when it comes to winning this ongoing fight to reduce this crime. As it is, the current system continues to come up short in deterring people who have been drinking from climbing behind the wheel. Two years ago, police stopped 27,066 ve- hicles and charged 56 drivers. The force called it a “positive sign” and reports it received no complaints about the publishing of the names of those people charged. It just doesn’t make sense to take a chance by driving drunk. The penalties, including an automatic one-year sus- pension, would seem to be enough of a deterrent and makes us wonder why anyone would risk it. Along with the charges comes the stigma of being labelled a drunk driver; you would think that alone would be the most effective discourage- ment. In the past, police forces have considered year-long RIDE programs and over the last year there have been sporadic checks in Durham, but the time has come for a year-round plan. This move would force every single driver in Durham to think long and hard before getting behind the wheel. The use of the Internet to shame drivers is akin to the scarlet let- ter, but if that’s what it’s going to take, the police must move forward and make RIDE a permanent fixture. It’s the only option in this battle. Boards not treating students the same To the editor: In all the talk of busing changes and complaints, an issue seems to have been forgotten. Why is it that two publicly funded school boards treat their students so differently? The Durham Catholic District School Board has free trans- portation on municipal buses for high school students, while the Durham District School Board requires that their stu- dents pay their own cost of transportation when riding City buses to and from school. There are 55 women, some with children, recovering from a fire last week that burned them out of what is essentially their home in Durham Re- gion at the YWCA’s Adelaide House in Oshawa. Less than a month away from Christ- mas, they are being shuffled into other hostels or area hotels while damage to the building is assessed. According to a YWCA official, Adelaide House is the only hostel for homeless women and children in Durham Region. Until the damage is fully assessed, they won’t know if any of them will be able to return to the shelter any time soon. Two women were taken to hospital, but only for precautionary measures, so we can thank goodness for small miracles. But many of these women, those who had any possessions, are in worse shape than they were before the fire as smoke and water damage ruined many personal items. And here’s another kicker: The fire broke out just a couple of months after Adelaide House celebrated a reopening, following $1.2 million in renovations. Just imagine completing renovations on your home, making it so much more comfortable, and then a fire ruins it. Isn’t that insult on top of injury? Well, here’s a chance for Durham Re- gion to pitch in and show its Christmas spirit. Staff member Gertrude Hendrikx says the women on the third floor lost every- thing, what little they had in some cases. They could use a number of items she explains. “Radios, alarm clocks, those are im- portant to them,” she said. “As well as clothing. “They left with what they were sleep- ing in, so they can use anything.” So far the response has been heart- warming. The community is coming together for these women in a time of tragedy. “It’s marvelous, a lot of people have been donating things,” Ms. Hendrikx says. Report cards came home and you or your child may be a little disappointed. You are looking for a quick fix to get their grades up -but few quick fixes last. Let’s explore how we can really help. Why do kids struggle or fail? There are specific reasons and,if we wish to help them,we must find the reason. Let’s take a boy and Mathematics for exam- ple,but the answer to this question applies to almost any subject. Here are a few of the most common problems that cause students to struggle in Mathematics. 1) Skill Gaps:These are gaps in his skill base that prevent him from learning and understanding the next concept. For example, you cannot truly under- stand division until you understand mul- tiplication.Have him assessed for cur- rent skill gaps in his math skills. 2) Reading Comprehension:Actually, believe it or not, this the most common reason. Many kids cannot read a math problem and understand what is being asked.Check his reading comprehen- sion level to make sure it is at grade level. 3) Problem-Solving Strategies:Many (read most) students do not know how to problem-solve.They rely on memory to tell them what to do in a specific sit- uation. When faced with a challenging mathematical problem, students must apply a specific process of problem- solving. If he does not,he will fail.Make sure he learns how to problem-solve. 4) Study and Work Habits:Did he hand in every assignment? Did he complete his homework on time? Did he cram for tests or was he doing a little review every week throughout the school year? When students have difficulty with a particular subject, they often leave it to the last moment rather than face the unpleasant task. This is a major mistake. The harder the subject, the more regularly it MUST be reviewed. 5) What are his expectations? Does he hate the subject? Is the teacher unfair? And so on.What we are after here is to discover his state of mind.Students who expect to fail, often transform themselves into victims. This is a nega- tive failure chain and becomes a self-ful- filling prophesy. Most failure is really mental meltdown not just a skill short- age.Be sure to consider his attitude and help turn this around in order to help him be able to succeed. In order to answer these questions, you may need to work with an expert to obtain a complete assessment of your son’s current skills as well as his future potential.Once you have identi- fied the root problem(s),then you can begin to really help you child learn how to succeed. Oxford Learning has been helping par- ents and children for years assess and identify why they are struggling and learn how to succeed at school. At Oxford Learning, beginning with an in- depth assessment, children are offered individual programs that address their needs in academics, learning skills and self esteem. It is a unique approach that offers them the tools and confidence to succeed now and in the future. The works department began monitoring farm vehicle activity on regional roads in April 2003, and has concluded that the farm community faces challenges, especially in areas with limited pavement, narrow shoulders and restricted sight distance. Recommendations from the works department and the Dur- ham agricultural advisory com- mittee (DAAC) include increased use of Road Watch services and seasonally targeted “share the road” education and enforce- ment campaigns, in partnership with the Durham Regional Police. While the DAAC indicated that signs would also improve safety, the report concludes that there is no “technical merit” to such an initiative. “I’m disappointed with the re- port, as farm machines get larg- er there is more reason to make people aware of the dangers,” said Uxbridge Mayor Gerri Lynn O’Connor. “For the sake of a few signs, we would be doing farmers and driv- ers a huge service.” Scugog Regional Councillor Jim McMillen agreed, noting that farmers are often harassed and in- timidated by drivers impatient to pass them on high-speed roads. The report was referred back to staff and will be discussed again at an upcoming meeting. Bar owners worry about impending smoking law DURHAM — Whitby Regional Councillor Joe Drumm praised the Province’s anticipated new smok- ing legislation at Wednesday’s meeting, saying far-reaching reg- ulations are necessary to ensure public health. However, other councillors ex- pressed concern that the legisla- tion, expected to be announced before the end of 2004, will mean further damages for local bar own- ers. Oshawa Regional Councillor Cathy Clarke said she is worried that owners who are complying with the regional bylaw by enhanc- ing outdoor patios and smoking areas, could now be forced to ban smokers from those areas. “Further restrictions from the Province that don’t allow smoking on patios or enclosed outdoor areas could be a problem,” she said. “We don’t want to see bars close down, and that’s where this is going.” It was suggested that the Prov- ince consult with stakeholders who have already made changes to comply with a local bylaw, like Durham’s many bar owners. The issue is expected to resur- face at council’s Dec. 15 meeting. The Eastern Ontario Leadership Sem- inar one-day workshop helps students with their post-secondary decisions, and was facilitated by 17-year-old Dunbarton student Shannon Hill. Earlier this year she attended a three- day workshop where 75 students from eastern Ontario schools were trained to take back what they learned to their own school to set up seminars of their own. “After the experience of going through a leadership program such as EOLS, it gave me a lot of incentive to find other ways to promote leadership and to help others to find something that they will be passionate about,” she said organizer. The all-day seminar was in one of the school’s gyms, and featured several ses- sions with motivational speakers from industry, post-secondary schools, as well as a representative from the News Adver- tiser. They played a game that outlined the effects of inequality in society. In the media portion of the workshop, News Advertiser news editor David Stell discussed the role of the media as a leader in the community. Students had a number of questions about the source of the paper’s story ideas. “A true newspaper reporter is out there looking for ideas, always hungry,” Mr. Stell told the participating students. He also discussed the responsibilities and ethics attached to the job. After the presentation Vanessa Corpuz was asked if the seminar had changed her views of journalism. “It did change my perspective on how things are run,” she said, adding “I didn’t know it involved so much digging into the community for stories.” High schoolers prepare for next step Fallsview CasinoFallsview CasinoFallsview Casino (Pay $20 Fare & Receive a $20.00 Casino Coin Rebate Limited Time Offer* ) For Reservationsl Call 1-877-223-7555 (Toll Free) Mon. to Fri. 9am - 5pm & Sat 9am - 1pm *Must be 19 years or older, government issued photo identification required to obtain player’s card. Every Wednesday & Sunday Mornings Pick ups in: Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax & Pickering FREE TRIP Ajax, Pickering businesses join discussion about industry’s future By Jillian Follert Staff Writer DURHAM — Jay Myers traces a bright yellow line graph with his finger, stopping at each of the sharp dips that mark an otherwise upward climb. The ice storm of 1996. Septem- ber 11. Last summer’s massive blackout. A strike by brake plant employees in Michigan. Each jagged plunge represents a monumental event, and billions of dollars in loss to Canada’s manu- facturing industry. “This really shows that we are not talking about a bunch of in- dividual companies, we’re talk- ing about an international supply chain that’s very integrated,” ex- plains the executive vice-president of Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME). “What happens in one country has a global im- pact. We can’t ignore that reality.” This was one of the key messag- es that local manufacturers took away from a community meeting hosted by CME, at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology last week. The event was part of a nation- wide series of community meet- ings, aimed at gathering recom- mendations from manufacturers that will help strengthen the strug- gling industry. Kevin Munns came to the meet- ing to hear how others in Durham are tackling challenges. As vice president of operations for Eco-Tec Inc., a Pickering-based company that manufactures spe- cialized equipment for chemical recycling and water purification, he says staffing is one of their big- gest obstacles. “We need a lot of engineers and specialized tradespeople on staff, and sometimes it’s difficult to get them because there isn’t a huge pool of those people in Durham,” he says. “I don’t know if it’s be- cause people aren’t as interested in those areas, or because there aren’t enough schools in this area teaching those things.” Exporting is another source of concern at Eco-Tec, as the rising Canadian dollar makes it increas- ingly difficult to compete with American companies based in China. Mr. Munns says they have considered setting up their own manufacturing plants in China, but there is concern about the start-up cost. Gord Sirrs, general manager of Oshawa’s Canada Rubber Group Inc., says he shares these con- cerns, and also worries about sky- rocketing energy costs. “The cost of energy just keeps going up, and it’s something we have no control over,” he says. “The only way we can combat it, is to use tools that are more energy efficient, but that only goes so far.” According to CME statistics, the cost of energy increased 46 per cent between the first quarter of 2000 and the second quarter of 2004. Raw material costs jumped about 35 per cent in the same pe- riod. “These are all huge challenges that the general public and the government might not be aware of,” says Mr. Myers. “People think of the manufacturing industry and think of the smokestacks and manual labour of 40 years ago.... They might not realize how im- portant it has become.” The CME estimates that manu- facturing accounts for 76 per cent of Ontario’s goods and services ex- ports, and 18 per cent of Canada’s Gross Domestic Product, making it the single largest business sector in the country. Improving the image of the industry, attracting more young people to manufacturing jobs and making companies more com- petitive through continuous in- novation and flexible responses to customer needs, are just a few solutions proposed for the coming years. The CME will take the concerns and recommendations gathered at the nationwide community meet- ings, and use them to compile a report, which will be delivered to the federal government in early February. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, DECEMBER 5, 2004 PAGE 9 A/P It’s important to find a career that means something to you. It’s a good number.” And, as usual, the person behind the funny, altered words to the songs is veteran entertainer Harry McKew, who will also emcee the Christmas shows. “A lot of people wonder where we get the humourous words they hear. Most of that comes from Harry. He’s my assistant director. He’s very clever. He can take any song you want and write up whole new words,” Campbell said. The Troubadours have been re- hearsing since September for this. “It’s roughly six to eight hours a week for the group,” said mem- ber Betty Clark. “The dancers do more.” There’s a group of about nine dancers who perform several piec- es. On other songs, the entire cho- rus must learn the choreography. Clark, who joined the group two years ago, is amazed at the “ded- ication of the people who want to put that much time and effort into it. There’s a constant move to make it just that little bit better.” Campbell said the members are an enthusiastic bunch. “For three months, it becomes their lives,” she said of the show. “If I have to cancel or postpone a rehearsal, they just about go into withdrawal.” The Troubadours rehearse three times a week from September up to show time and then turn around and stage another show in the spring. The commitment keeps everyone active and flexible, both mentally and physically, said Clark. They have to memorize all the words and learn the dance steps. “The show is two hours of con- stant activity of some form or an- other,” she said. “We have three women over 80 and two of them are in the dance group.” Many people aren’t sure about seeing “a group of seniors” sing and dance but anyone who’s seen the show will tell them it’s defi- nitely worth it, Campbell said. Clark said she’s not sure who enjoys the shows more, the audi- ence or the entertainers. Yo u’ve got three chances to see the show, Dec. 12 at 2:30 and 7 p.m. and Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. All three per- formances will take place at Osha- wa Little Theatre, Russett Avenue. Tickets are $15 which includes des- sert and coffee. Tickets are avail- able at the Northview branch of Oshawa Senior Citizens Centres at Northview Community Centre, Beatrice Street East, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. Ask the Podiatrist: I was recently diagnosed with adult onset diabetes. Although I have seen numerous professionals including an internist, a dietician and a podiatrist, I need some clarification as to why my legs and feet are so adversely affected. How can I take care of my feet to ensure many more trouble free miles? Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that can only be controlled but not cured. It is very important that the diabetic patient always maintains a strict regime of medication, diet, exercise and weight control as the disease is always present. Diabetes, which affects the lower extremities, has two major components. One is circulatory, affecting the small and sometimes large arteries and the other is neuropathy, affecting the peripheral nerves and therefore, sensation. The small artery disease results from a thickening of the capillary basement membrane. This affects the lower extremity as it is farthest from the heart and its diameter is already narrower than the smaller arteries elsewhere in the body. Exercise improves circulation by increasing both cardiac output and peripheral blood flow. It is also important for diabetics to give up smoking cigarettes, as nicotine is a vaso-constrictor (narrow blood vessel diameters). Pe ripheral neuropathy involved the inability of the diabetic patient to sense pain and other discomforts as well as an inability to sense between hot and cold temperatures. Pain is nature’s signal that something is wrong and must be tended to. Without this signal the diabetic often remains unaware that a problem exists. Combining the poorer circulation with a loss of sensation puts the diabetic patient at a much higher risk for foot problems. Pressure of the most minor type or small cuts can go unnoticed until these become full-blown problems that take much longer to resolve in the diabetic patient. Calluses and pressure sores are also more prevalent in the diabetic patient because the protective fat pad across the metatarsals (ball of the foot) thins out. Skin changes involve diminished sweating which leads to dry, scaly, cracked and fissured skin. To accommodate the foot for changes in those pressure areas, or thotics insoles or accommodative footwear may also be needed. Diabetic patients must be proactive (not reactive) and identify problems before they occur. If you follow this simple list of DO’S and don’ts, the diabetic patient is less likely to have serious foot problems. DO’S FOR DIABETICS: • Examine feet daily • Soak feet, but never longer than 10 minutes, to avoid excessive dryness. • Pat, don’t rub feet dry, drying especially between the toes • Cut nails straight across • Diabetic skin is dry, so use lanolin cream • When bathing, test the bath water with your elbow • Sleep with a pillow between your legs to prevent crossing • Wear wool or cotton socks • Always exercise and dress properly for the weather • Orthotics to decrease pressure points • Seek professional care for a proper treatment plan DON’TS FOR DIABETICS • Don’t smoke • Don’t cream between your toes • Don’t wear tight socks or garters • Don’t wear shoes without socks • Don’t wear rigid or mended socks • Don’t wear tight fitting or fashion shoes • Don’t walk bare foot especially on hot surfaces such as pool decks or sandy beaches • Don’t wear vinyl or plastic shoes, leather breaths • Don’t use hot water bottles or heating pads • Never cut your corns or calluses and never use acid creams or medication corn plasters. Even though it utilizes laser technology, it differs in that it doesn’t penetrate too deeply into other tissue and it’s perfectly safe and side effect free. While most people recognize that shovelling snow is very hard work and can put severe stress on your heart, fewer people recognize the stress and strain that it places on the lower back. Most people don’t realize that snow shovelling, especially if the snow is wet, is like picking up heavy weights. One full shovel load of wet snow can weigh as much as 25 pounds (11 kg). Shovellers sustain injuries every year from repetitive twisting, improper lifting, over-exertion, or simply by trying to shovel too much snow. Many of these injuries can be prevented by taking the time to prepare and consciously think about how to move properly. Shovelling can be made even more difficult by the weather. Cold air makes it harder to work and breathe, which adds some extra strain on the body. There also is the risk for hypothermia, a decrease in body temperature, if one is not dressed correctly for the weather conditions. Cold tight muscles are more likely to strain than warm, relaxed muscles. Take time to stretch and prepare your body for activity with a simple warm up of marching on the spot and a few shoulder circles to help tackle the snow. The Canadian Physiotherapy Association offers the following tips to help get a handle on safe shovelling: • Choose a shovel that’s right for you – A shovel with an appropriate length handle is correct when you can slightly bend your knees, bend forward 10 degrees or less, and hold the shovel comfortably in your hands at the start of the shovel stroke. A plastic shovel blade will be lighter than a metal one, putting less strain on your spine; and sometimes, a smaller blade is better than a larger one. This avoids the risk of trying to pick up a pile of snow that is too heavy for your body to carry. Ergonomic shovels with a bent shaft are very good and have been tested by The Liberty Mutual Research Centre for Safety and Health in Hopkinton, MA. Researches found that when people use a bent shaft snow shovel they bend forward 16 per cent less than they do with a straight shaft shovel and your heart doesn’t need to work as hard. • When you grip the shovel, make sure your hands are at least 12 inches apart. This will increase your leverage and reduce strain on your body. Always keep one hand close to the base of the shovel to balance weight of the lift and lessen the lower back strain. • Lift the snow properly. Squat with your legs apart, knees bent and back straight. Lift with your legs. Do not bend at the waist. Scoop small amounts of snow into the shovel and walk to where you want to dump it. Holding a shovel of snow with your arms outstretched puts too much weight on your spine. Also, spray y our shovel with a lubricant or silicon spray so the snow does not cling. Playing the defending Lake On- tario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) champion St. Mary Cath- olic Secondary School Monarchs of Pickering, the Ajax-based Tro- jans hung tough through a miser- able third quarter to come all the way back in the fourth for a 59- 53 victory. The game was played Thursday night at St. Mary in front of a large crowd. The exciting season opener for both schools featured high-tempo, up-and-down play by both rivals. The game was close through the opening half, with the Monarchs holding a 16-10 edge after the first quarter. That gap closed even tighter in the second quarter, with St. Mary ahead 23-22 at halftime. The Trojans were on the ropes in the third, however, with St. Mary going on an 11-0 run to open the quarter. In fact, Pickering High failed to register a single point through the opening 5:30. But, in the last two minutes, Trojans’ Stephen Lopez provided a much- needed spark, scoring six points, all on hustle plays around the bas- ket, to cut the deficit to nine (38- 29) at the end of the quarter. The late third-quarter surge seemed to give the Trojans the lift they needed in the fourth. The Trojans took a 50-48 lead with 2:20 remaining, when Devoe Joseph hit both his shots from the free-throw stripe, and continued to play well down the stretch. The big dagger to any potential St. Mary upris- ing came with under two min- utes to play, when Joseph hit a three-pointer — one of his three in the contest — and was fouled. He stuck the foul shot for the rare four-point play, putting the Tro- jans up by five. The come-from-behind win, however, wasn’t enough to stir much emotion from longtime Tro- jans’ head coach Ron Parfitt. “This is not the LOSSA cham- pionship. There’s only one game that matters and that’s when we meet in the playoffs, whenever that is. Other than that, this is just a dress rehearsal to see what the other guy’s going to do.” As for any alterations he made after the horrid third quarter, Parfitt said he simply urged his players do a better job in several areas. “Put the ball in the high post, move the ball on offence and play defence more intelligently,” he of- fered. When asked about Joseph’s fine shooting from his guard position, Parfitt was equally nonplussed. “He’s supposed to do that; that’s his job,” said Parfitt of his preco- cious Grade 10 guard. He acknowledged that two of his players — Lopez and Sephton Spence — are not in game shape as yet, coming off a long football season with the Trojans. He’s also missing one other player, Lyndon Rainford, who’s out with a broken wrist. St. Mary head coach Mike Gor- densky was far from angry with his players for blowing a significant third-quarter lead. In fact, he fully expected Pickering High would make a run. “Joseph got hot and hit some big shots. We made a couple of stupid turnovers. We tried to throw the ball deep and you’re not going to throw the ball deep against Pick- ering. Even though we were up by 12 or 13 in the third, I knew they would make a run; they always do. Until the final buzzer sounds, I never, ever think we’ve won a game against Pickering.” Gordensky said the game repre- sented a stern early-season test for his charges, It also reinforced that they can play even with Pickering on any given night. “My guys know that we can beat them, but we’re going to have to play really well to beat them. We haven’t been playing that well. I was a little worried coming into the game that we’d get blown out. But, I was very happy with the way we played, and hopefully we’ll learn from it.” While Pickering High was miss- ing a key component in Rainford, the Monarchs entered the game without senior starting forward Erik Glavic, who missed the con- test for an undisclosed reason. Gordensky said his front-court play, especially his rebounding, was sorely missed. “The games we played this year without him, we haven’t played well. He’s a huge part of our team,” he said. Joseph led the Trojans with 18 points, followed by Marcus Wong with 17 and Tim Cozier and Lopez each with 10. Monarchs’ guard Sean Main- got netted a game-high 23 points, while Duane Howard added 12. NOTES: Parfitt is aided on the sidelines this season by his son Matthew, who’s a guard with the Yo rk University Lions after a strong high school career with the Sin- clair Secondary School Celtics of Whitby. Also on the bench is one of his former players, Kirk Salesman, who played on Canada’s national basketball team for several years and also played his collegiate ball with the Northeastern University Huskies of Boston, Mass. Chapman returns after injuries kept her off the field last season By Al Rivett Sports Editor AJAX — After injuries laid waste to an entire year, Ajax’s Can- dace Chapman is back and ready to help the Notre Dame Univer- sity Fighting Irish win a national women’s soccer crown. The 21-year-old forward ad- vanced to the final four in NCAA Division 1 soccer. The Irish played their semifinal game against Santa Clara University of California on Friday afternoon, after press time, at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The other semifinal, between UCLA and Princeton, was also played Friday, with the final today (Sunday) at 1 p.m. This season has marked a come- back for the Canadian national team member, who had surgery on her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her knee, which also kept her out of last year’s World Cup of soccer. Chapman resumed prac- tising in June after missing an en- tire season (she red-shirted her entire junior year) with the Irish last year. “It’s been a building process, game by game, but I feel I’m ready,” says Chapman, reached Thursday afternoon for a phone interview following a practice ses- sion in North Carolina. “I think getting here and having the op- portunity to play for a national championship is awesome. I was hurt during the World Cup, but to win a national championship ranks right up there.” This season has been a re- building one in another area of Chapman’s soccer career. She was shifted by Notre Dame head coach Randy Waldrum from defender to forward, a position she hasn’t played since during her days with the Ajax United Wildcats youth rep soccer team. “I think it’s been a pretty good change. It’s been a learning expe- rience, but I’ve had a lot of help from my teammates with getting the ball to me. I’m re-learning (my role with the team) a bit, but I’m getting the hang of it.” Chapman says she’s fully confi- dent that she and her Irish mates have the stuff to win a national title. “We have a lot of great players. Our teamwork has been one of our strengths this year. If we work hard as a team, we definitely have a shot to win a national title,” she says. The Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School graduate isn’t the only Canadian on the Irish team. She’s joined by junior forward Katie Thorlakson of Langley, B.C. and senior defender Melissa Tancredi, of Ancaster, On- tario. “Definitely, having (another Canadian at Notre Dame) helped when I came here as a freshman. Melissa helped me settle in a bit, so I did the same for Katie Thor- lakson. We have a strong bond by being Canadian and playing on the national team,” she says. With a 2-1 record and the only Ontario Minor Hockey Association squad still in the running to advance to the second round of the playoffs, the Raiders fell 5-2 to the Brantford 99ers. Khalid Alli scored both Raiders’ goals. Christian Kirk assisted on both mark- ers. The Raiders started the weekend off on the right skate, posting a 4-3 victory over a tough Amherst, New Yo rk squad in Game 1. Alli led the way with a goal and an assist. Kirk, Jake Bannister and Robbie Af- fleck rounded out the scor- ing. Andrew Henderson, Adam Valadao and Jacob Lessard added assists. Goalie Connor Wilkinson was solid in net, holding back a late charge in the dying minutes to seal the victory. After losing the second game to a strong Junior Canadians team, the Raid- ers bounced back with their most impressive win of the season, beating the New Jersey Rockets 11–1 in Game 3. Va ladao led the scoring with a hat trick, while Kirk and Bannister each con- tributed two goals apiece. Jordan Minos, Brandon LaBumbard, Joe Doherty and Alli added singles. Alex Fortin and Affleck collected three assists, Ban- nister had two, Jake Buckler, Steven Deeg, Minos, Kirk, Va ladao, Lessard, LaBum- bard and Doherty chipped in with one apiece. Blue liners Eric Mitch- ell and Andrew Hender- son played tough defense in front of the Raiders’ net, limiting the New Jersey scoring chances.
