HomeMy WebLinkAboutNA2004_11_14Regional transit system on hold as municipalities want time to ask questions By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM — Faced with unan- swered questions and balking at losing bargaining power, regional councillors have sent the amal- gamated transit plan back to the local municipalities for a month. “It’s more difficult to negotiate after saying, ‘Yeah, we agree,’” said Oshawa Mayor John Gray. “We’d rather have everybody put their cards on the table.” It’s the repeat story of this spring, when only two of Durham’s eight municipalities agreed to hand over transit — the rest wanted a business plan. Now that the plan is done, councillors want time to go through the almost 200-page report and decide whether add- ing anywhere from $63 to $159 to taxpayers’ bills is worth it. “I’m not suggesting we forget about it, I’m just suggesting some caution,” said Whitby Mayor Mar- cel Brunelle at Wednesday’s re- gional council meeting. “It’s ex- traordinarily expensive.” The business plan recommends amalgamating transit by July 1, 2006. The four transit systems plus disabled transit would be handed over to the Region with no com- pensation to the municipalities, and details surrounding union contracts, legal issues and service plans will be determined during the 2005 “transitional year,” the report said. The details surrounding funding transfers to the lower tiers were of most concern, especially the plan for the Region to keep unfunded Durham f inds itself at bus stop The Pickering 28 PAGES ✦ Pressrun 46,600 ✦ Metroland Durham Region Media Group ✦ SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2004 ✦ Optional delivery $6 / Newsstand $1 FESTIVAL TIME Details of Pickering hospital event Pages 3, 13-16 PACKING UP Volunteers prepare Santa Fund gifts Page 17 SISTER ACT Vissers eye college crown Page 19 SUNROOMS • WINDOWS • DOORS 905-686-2445 WHY MOVE IMPROVE ? In an effort to get to know On- tario’s hospital from the inside, Mr. Smitherman took a one-hour tour of the hospital and saw the redevelopment plans. As he went from the Auxiliary Gift Shop to the emergency de- partment to the inpatient medi- cal unit, one factor remained constant — the gratitude he ex- pressed to volunteers, staff and physicians. “I just want to say thanks to all of you for all you’re doing for the patients,” he said as Margot Da Costa, manager of the in-patient medical unit, introduced him to staff. He wasn’t there to make an an- nouncement or talk about policy, he said he was there to get a fla- vour of the local community and its hospital. Mr. Smitherman did repeat- edly talk about adopting best practices across the health-care system. “O ne of the things we have failed to do so far in our health- care system is if (for example) a nursing station has a practice that is working well we have no best practice model (to adopt that across the system),” he said. “My frustration is that from time to time we have a hospital that develops an excellent model of health care and we’re slow to expand it out to other areas Ron Pietroniro / News Advertiser photo Len Forde, manager of the in-patient rehabilitation unit for the Rouge Valley Health System, speaks with Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman. Hume Martin, Rouge Valley president and chief executive of- ficer, led Mr. Smitherman on the tour pointing out the 1954 hospital (now used as the redevelopment office), the 1964 main building and the 1994 expansion. Mr. Smither- man was also told how different areas are going to change under the latest redevelopment plan. As he looked out one of the north facing windows, director of com- munications Katie Cronin-Wood pointed out where the emergency department is going to go. After the tour was over, Mr. Smi- therman had a meet and greet with foundation members, board members, and local politicians, including Whitby Mayor Marcel Brunelle, Ajax Mayor Steve Parish and Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan. He then gave a speech. “A s much good service that is being done here it could be com- promised if we don’t do some- thing to accommodate growth,” he said of the redevelopment plan, adding the government strongly supports the project. “(It’s) very well-developed. They enjoyed a lot of good work,” he said of the plan in an inter- view. “Everything I see here today demonstrates there is good strong community support. I sent a mes- sage today that this is an important project for our government.” The redevelopment plans, which include a larger emergency department, new fracture clinic and a larger diagnostic imaging department, are scheduled to be completed in 2008. liabilities such as sick pay owed to transit employees the responsi- bility of local municipalities. That means places such as Oshawa will be stuck with around $8 million to pay out. “(The Region) wants (us) to transfer the employees, but wants us to have to worry about the pay- outs later,” Mayor Gray said. Dur- ing council he discovered that, when the Region was formed in 1974, unfunded liabilities were transferred up to the Region, but the lower tiers were billed “for a number of years,” said Finance Commissioner Jim Clapp. Scugog Mayor Marilyn Pearce, while supportive of the plan that will bring a dial-a-ride system to north Durham, was concerned about the hit her taxpayers will face. “No matter which (scenario) you look at, we’re going to bear the most increased costs for transit,” she said. She wanted assurances the cost would be split 50 per cent on ridership and 50 per cent as- sessment. “We want to make sure we’re not going to be (hit) at 100 per cent.” Asked whether councillors were going down the same path of de- laying because of not knowing the details of the plan, Regional Chair- man Roger Anderson said the Re- gion has given municipalities what they’ve asked for: a business plan, cost estimates and communica- tion. The plan will now go to the local municipalities for comment, and will be back on the regional council agenda Dec. 15. The move to region-wide transit requires tri- ple majority: support from a ma- jority of regional councillors, plus five of Durham’s eight municipali- ties equalling 51 per cent of the population. By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — More people are going to be able to become homeowners in Pickering thanks to some money from the federal and provincial govern- ments. The two levels of govern- ment announced an agreement Monday with Home Ownership Alternatives, a trust and non- profit corporation, to provide up to $2.3 million in funding to build 382 affordable con- dominium units in Pickering, Scarborough and Markham. The Pickering development is the Options for Homes build- ing currently being constructed on The Esplanade. Options for Homes is a private, non- profit corporation that works with Home Ownership Alter- natives to be able to offer the units below the average-market selling price to modest-income households. The funding agreement is part of a pilot project under the home ownership component of the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program. “What it’s going to do is allow us to provide an additional $25,000 for people’s down pay- ments,” Mike Labbe, president of Options for Homes, said of the announcement. He said an extra $25,000 on a mortgage works out to an ad- ditional carrying cost of $150 a month, which is the differ- ence for some people between being approved for a mortgage or not. “It does make the difference between them being stuck in a rental unit or being able to purchase their own home,” Mr. Labbe said. At the Pickering development 25-35 of homeowners who buy units in the 220-unit building will benefit from the announce- ment. Ward 1 Regional Coun- cillor Maurice Brenner, who is also a social housing advocate, welcomed the announcement. “It is a very positive initiative. It is one of the first announce- ments that is going to start making a difference,” he said. “Unfortunately it is still just a drop in the bucket compared with the long list of people wait- ing for affordable housing in Durham Region.” He said this helps people to attain home ownership who otherwise would not have been able to, but it doesn’t address the thousands of people wait- ing for an affordable rental unit in the Region. “The difficulty still remains where you have a waiting list in excess of 5,000... These are the people who neither qualify or purchase a home. They need to be able to move into sustain- able rental housing,” he said. Option for Homes units are typically sold at 15 per cent below market price, but come with a second mortgage for that 15 per cent. When the unit is sold or rented out the owner must pay back the second mortgage, which goes back into a pool to help future owners. The additional help of $25,000 for a down payment to come from this week’s an- nouncement would work in the same way with the money being repaid once the unit is sold. Not all buyers qualify to get help with their down payment. The Pickering building is ex- pected to be finished in fall of next year. Now the argument will begin over adults being forced to wear helmets on bicycles and similar activities. Ontario is only a minor legislative hurdle away from imposing the law geared towards protecting adults while cycling, in-line skating and skateboarding. It will match an existing law requiring children under the age of 18 to wear helmets, which was introduced in 1996. The Canada Safety Council commissioned a survey in 2002 of 1,000 Canadians asking their views on helmet safety. The results show we are ready for this kind of law. According to the survey, more than half of Canadian adults (52 per cent) who ride bicycles, never or rarely wear a helmet when they bicycle. Truly disturbing were the reasons Canadians didn’t wear helmets for these activities. The top answers from respon- dents included ‘they don’t bother’ and concerned about ‘a ppearance,’ both at 14 per cent, it’s ‘not cool’ at 13 per cent, ‘uncomfortable’, 11 per cent, and ‘inconvenient-cumber- some’ at 10 per cent. But it appears, based on this same survey, that people understand the need for legislation requiring helmets for adults. Almost all respondents, 97 per cent, strongly agree or somewhat agree that wearing a helmet for activities such as bicycling, skateboarding, in-line skating and using a scooter can prevent serious injury. Liberal MPP John Milloy, who introduced the private member’s bill at Queen’s Park last week, cites studies that show helmets can reduce the number of head injuries by possibly 85 per cent. His bill received unanimous approval on second reading and only needs a third OK before becom- ing official. Despite any public backlash the Ontario government takes for the move, the benefits are worth the trouble. The biggest challenge will be in enforcing the new laws. It sets a precedent for safety, and carries the potential to save lives and save the health-care system time and money. Maybe we don’t need laws for every facet of our lives, but this appears to be a responsible move, one we’ll all benefit from. Problem should never have occurred To the editor: Re: ‘Parking crisis looms at regional building,’ Oct. 22. I am constantly befuddled and sometimes amused, at least until it costs me money on my tax bill, by the apparent lack of communication among planners, developers, community politicians, and their supposedly knowledgeable bureau- cratic assistants. How many times have we, for example, watched a street being repaved only to have parts of it dug up some weeks later in order to repair an old sewer or water line, or install new communications lines? There are hundreds of such examples, and they’ve all been at our expense. For goodness’ sake, didn’t someone on the planning board, or our multiple councils, or at least some underling in the our huge bureaucracy have the common sense to not only recognize parking problem at the regional building, but, more to the point, have the nerve to do something about it? Why is it that we always seem to have to try and resolve new problems after the fact when, with proper thinking and consultation in the first place, they should never have oc- curred? I want to introduce you to Nancy Daigneault. Ms. Daigneault is the president of mychoice.ca, a new national smok- ers’ organization, a website designed for Canadian adult smokers. Its goal is to provide smokers with the same ef- fective, well-organized representation that other major advocacy groups pro- vide to their members. And with Ms. Daigneault leading the charge, they just might have a chance to be heard, even in the face of overwhelming public and political pressure. The King City woman, who grew up in Montreal, has been around politics in recent years, including working in MPP Jim Flaherty’s office for a time. She’s well-spoken, reasonable to talk to and extremely up-to-date on legislation and issues surrounding smoking, here and even in the U.S. As a non-smoker myself, a rabid non-smoker who takes shots at smok- ers every chance I can for their health risks, I fully expected to dislike Ms. Daigneault, prior to meeting her. Unfor- tunately, she made that really tough, if not impossible, to do. Maybe it’s the fact I always root for the underdog, and let’s face it, smokers are the underdogs nowadays with public and political pressure mounting, but she came off sounding very fair when talking about the rights of smokers. A non-smoker herself, having quit five years ago, she has friends who continue to smoke, and she doesn’t think they’re treated fairly in many parts of Canada. Approached to lead mychoice.ca, she was interested in the challenge because she believes smokers deserve to be treated better than second-class citi- zens. “I just find that when you start remov- ing choice from people and individual liberties, I think you’re going down a slippery slope,” she explained. Not a bad stance to go on. In a country where we bend over backwards to be fair to everyone, regardless of race, religion or culture, smokers are smart to take on persecuted status to defend them- selves. Despite my hatred for smoking, Ms. Daigneault had me thinking twice about my bias against the disgusting habit of burning rolled up tobacco and sucking dangerous toxins into the lungs. I will never ever understand the habit, but I certainly believe everyone has the right to be treated fairly. I probably can’t stop myself from teasing smokers about their habit, but I might actually feel a twinge of guilt next time I ‘persecute’ them. Interested in finding out more about mychoice.ca? Learning to accept smokers David Stell news editor EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM — Durham’s long-term care facilities are receiving $4.4 million in new, yearly funding from Queen’s Park, which has also announced a freeze on nursing home rates and a small hike in residents’ comfort allowance. Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says the govern- ment is adding $191 mil- lion in funding to nursing homes, for a total govern- ment contribution of more than $400 million per year. The money is targeted at hiring more nurses and other staff so nurses can be on duty at all times, resi- dents can receive a mini- mum of two baths a week and homes can offer more activities. Saying “residents and their families deserve a break,” Mr. McGuinty noted the rate freeze is the first since 1993. The comfort allowance, for residents whose monthly incomes are below $1,597, is going up $4 a month to $116. “It certainly will guaran- tee the current level of ser- vice and improvements in some areas for sure,” says Patrick Brown, administra- tor of the 199-bed Strath- haven Lifecare Centre in Bowmanville. Strathhaven is due to re- ceive an increase of about $200,000 per year. Mr. Brown was in the process of looking at the funding in terms of the ministry’s spending criteria and how it could best be used at the King Street facility. Whether that means hiring more staff or adding services remains to be seen, said Mr. Brown. The modest comfort al- lowance increase will help Strathhaven’s residents with expenses, he said, noting a lot are smokers. Ballycliffe Lodge in Ajax is in line for a $100,375 funding boost. “O bviously that’s a posi- tive step forward,” said ad- ministrator Christine Lang- ton. “It at least confirms the government’s commitment to long-term care.” She, too, is looking at how best to spend the money, noting much will depend on the ministry’s revised long-term care standards, which she says increase ac- countability in seven spe- cific areas, including skin care and wound manage- ment. “We’re going to need to look at the standards, where the resources will best be spent,” Ms. Langton said. She notes that the min- istry announcement might create the perception that twice-weekly baths are not occurring at facilities, when that is generally not the case. “A lot of homes have al- ready been doing two baths a week,” said Ms. Langton, noting when 80 per cent of residents are inconti- nent, five or six washes a day are not unusual. “There are people that are washed every morning, and a lot of them don’t like a full bath.” durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, NOVEMBER 14, 2004 PAGE 7 P TRAVEL NOW, PAY LATER* EQ UAL PAYMENTS* Interest FreeOR 12 Use Your Sears Card *See Sears Travel location nearest you or www.SearsTravel.ca for complete details, terms and conditions. Located in Pickering, the centre has been helping students achieve success since 1995. Pr ior to enrolment, each student is assessed using recognized testing tools to establish skill levels and areas of need. The assessment is an interactive one-on-one process with an Ontario Certified teacher. This allows a trained professional to observe the student while performing the test and pinpoint which skill areas in math or language are lacking. The impor- tance of this is relevant as some students are simply not comfortable in testing situations. The results of the assessment are reviewed with the par- ent and an individualised program is designed for the student. Students who attend Grade Expectations spend a full two hours per week with their instructor. The time is spent on instructing the student from the personalized program, as well as assisting them in their school work. This homework support has become increasingly important in the years since the new Ontario curriculum has been implemented. If students are struggling with a concept presented to them in school, they are encour- aged to bring the work to Grade Expectations for assistance. With a max- imum of three students in a class, teachers offer the individual instruction and attention that often cannot be supplied by a classroom teacher. The small classroom setting (not an open concept setting) allows for a quiet place where students can focus on their work. Due to renovations at Pickering Museum Village it has cancelled its special events from now until the summer, including the popu- lar annual holiday event. Dave Marlowe, education and collections officer, said he has heard from some disappointed people. “We’ve had a few people com- ment already, but when they see what we have this time next year it will provide us with facilities that are so much improved,” he said. Christmas in the Village usually runs over several weekends in De- cember where visitors could see the way different ethnic and reli- gious groups celebrated Christmas or other winter holiday festivities. One of the buildings would usu- ally depict a traditional Victorian Christmas while the general store would be open to show the com- mercial aspect of what Christmas was like in the 1900s, Mr. Marlowe said. As part of the renovations at the Village, the Brougham Central Hotel (currently the operations centre) is being restored to a tem- perance hotel, which it was dur- ing the 1850s, while the Redman House is being moved from its location northeast of the village to be used as the main building. “We’re really looking forward to getting it started and getting it done but in order to accommo- date it we need to leave space,” Mr. Marlowe said. There is also going to be a new staff facility, meeting facility, washrooms and kitchen facilities. “Christmas in the Village will be back next year and with these facilities we’ll be able to accom- modate more people,” he said. The annual holiday event has been a big attraction since it began seven years ago. “It has been popular right since the first year we had it, we’re just packed when we do it,” Mr. Mar- lowe said. He said the staff is disappointed too. “We’re going to miss Christ- mas (in the Village) ourselves, but we’ve got next year to look forward to that is (going to be) bigger and better,” he said. No Christmas in Pickering Museum Village this year One reason that high tobacco taxes and unfair smoking legislation slide so easily through the system, is that adult smokers have never offered any organized opposition. With www.mychoice.ca, that can all change. If, out of the nearly five million adult smokers in Canada, even as few as a hundred thousand visit this new website, smokers would have a voice too powerful to ignore. In fact, with a hundred thousand members, www.mychoice.ca would be one of the largest consumer groups in the country. Governments would have to listen to such a large group. And, with a seat at the table, smokers could work for more reasonable taxation levels and more balanced smoking legislation. Log on to www.mychoice.ca today. It’s about speaking up for your r ights. "It's something that ad- ministration and nurse educators have been advo- cating for for the past two years," said Judy Robinson, dean of the school of health and human studies for Dur- ham College. "This PhD funding is certainly a wel- come bonus to supporting further education." The money, to be dis- tributed over the next four years, will pay the tuition of nursing faculty who enrol in a PhD nursing program, said a recent release from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. There are 10 professors at Durham College and the University of Ontario Insti- tute of Technology (UOIT) in Oshawa who would be eligible to apply, Ms. Rob- inson said. "There really is a short- age in Canada, especially in Ontario, of faculty teach- ing nursing," said Carolyn Byrne, dean of the fac- ulty of health sciences at UOIT. "Many faculty have their master’s degree (but) there's a shortage of PhD (teachers) to recruit. "(The funding) will really help to build a solid base of PhD faculty to teach nurs- ing students." It currently costs around $7,500 just for tuition in a PhD program, Ms. Byrne said. Two professors are cur- rently studying for theirs, and will be eligible for some retroactive pay under the new funding. "We can't provide the public with the nurses they need without more nursing professors," said Joan Les- mond, president of the Reg- istered Nurses Association of Ontario. The minister of health and long-term care agreed. "Nurses are the heart and soul of the health-care sys- tem," said George Smither- man. "Our investments will improve the working lives of nurses today and prepare the profession for tomor- row." Durham College and UOIT have a joint nursing program that gives students a bachelor of science in nursing, Ms. Byrne said. Tr eatment offered, but limited hours prevents more people from getting care By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — Susan Fer- guson dreaded going to Lak- eridge Hospital in Whitby for dialysis treatment three days a week. She said she felt like she should be sick when she looked around the waiting room at all the other pa- tients. She hated driving 30 min- utes each way through, at times winter-like weather, for a procedure that a clinic five minutes from her house was doing. On a waiting list for six months, Ms. Ferguson finally got into the Dialysis Man- agement Clinic on Kingston Road in Pickering. On a re- cent morning while she was there getting her treatment done she talked about how the clinic makes the difficult life of being a dialysis patient tolerable. “If you have to come, this is very relaxing. The staff is easy going; you feel more at ease,” she said lounging comfortably in a chair while her blood is cleaned in the dialysis machine and a Macy Gray song plays in the back- ground. She said the nurses and staff were great at the hospi- tal but the environment was depressing. Ms. Ferguson is one of 24 patients at the private, not- for-profit clinic run by Igal Holtzer and his wife Carol, who is a dialysis nurse. She had an idea when she was working at Toronto Western Hospital to offer dialysis to travellers visit- ing Toronto, and that clinic was approved and opened downtown in 1982. Then in 1994 the provincial govern- ment gave them permission to open as the first OHIP- funded privately operated clinic in Markham followed by a second clinic for Picker- ing which opened in 1996. They’ve since added a clinic in Peterborough. “Our mission statement was to provide dialysis ser- vices to patients in their community at no cost to the patient and providing care equal or better to the hospi- tal,” Mr. Holtzer said. Their patients get medical care from doctors in Toron- to, Scarborough or York but they can have dialysis done close to home. Ms. Holtzer said if they switched to a hospital clos- er to home for dialysis they would have to switch doctors too, which could be a diffi- cult adjustment for patients who had been seeing the same physician for years. The clinic is licensed by the province and has its op- erating budget approved by the ministry. “It’s not that we can do whatever we want to - they even tell us what to pay for the nurses,” Mr. Holtzer said. “We are very much con- trolled by the Ministry.” The clinic has a list of 12 people waiting to get treat- ment closer to home, which Mr. Holtzer said could be erased if the ministry would increase their operating budget so the clinic could be open longer hours. Cur- rently there are times where all the equipment that has been bought and paid for by the government sits in a locked clinic because there is no money in the operating budget to extend the hours. “They should have more of these open and have them open longer,” Ms. Ferguson said. She finds the clinic more comfortable; she is able to come and catch up on her reading and drink a cup of coffee, sleep, or watch TV or a movie. Both Ms. Ferguson and the Holtzers realize there has to be dialysis treatment of- fered at hospitals for patients who might be sick or have complications. “You need the hospital for dialysis for when people are sick, but if you can walk around and work it’s better to have places like this,” said Ms. Ferguson, who works. Mr. Holtzer said on aver- age it costs 25 per cent less to operate his clinics compared with hospital dialysis areas. He said the number of dialy- sis patients has grown, and will continue to grow, but the clinic is the same size it was when it opened. He recommends local residents who want to get into the clinic submit their names for the waiting list and lobby their MPP to ap- prove extending the clinics hours. WITH THIS COUPON. EXPIRES NOV. 30/04 Ask The Podiatrist It’s time to winterize your feet Ronald J. Klein B.Sc., D.P.M. Podiatrist-Foot Specialist Everyone knows that with a decrease in temperature in the fall we must do certain chores around the house to ready it for the winter. The game is true for our car, including antifreeze and a thinner oil. But how many of us are aware of the need to “shape up”, to ready our bodies and muscles for the start up of that new ski or hockey season. Healthy feet and ankles must be fit and strong to act as accelerators, steering, brakes and shock absorbers. Any weakness to these extremities can lead to injuries and even the end of a season of participation. A fitness program should begin in the early fall to ready yourself by the sign of the first flakes. For skiing, strong quads and abdominal muscles are most important. Knee bends, sit-ups, crunches and skipping rope all help to strengthen your quadriceps and abdominal muscles. Racquet sports are equally beneficial in maintaining cardiovascular benef its and reaction time. Greater flexibility allows for a wider range of motion and minimizes the chance of strains. Stretch antagonistic muscle groups to maintain a point of tightness, hold for 40 to 60 seconds and release. Repeat each stretch three times. Strength of muscles is also important but overdoing it can lead to muscles tears. Wa rm-ups are most important before beginning the activity especially for cold weather sports. We idle our cars on cold winter days, but are we as kind to our bodies? Warm-up exercises help stretch muscles and allow for greater mobility. This minimizes the chance of injuries by allowing the muscles to be more responsive and act as better shock absorbers. Stream the part of the body used in the activity; for example, your legs in skiing or skating when warming up but also do upper body circular arm swings. A cool down period after the activity is also important. A sauna or whirlpool followed by a cool shower will help. Stop the activity when you’re tired. Remember, more injuries occur on that last run of the day when your fatigue hampers your reactive time and you are not paying attention. Winter sports require proper clothing. Upper body layering will keep you warmer and always wear a hat to prevent heat loss. Proper foot wear includes insulated waterproof boots or shoes. Socks must remain dry to prevent the occurrence of frostbite. Those suffering from pre-existing circulatory problems such as diabetes or Raynaud’s Disease should consult their medical doctor. Ski boots and skates should fit properly for a safe and uneventful activity. If the boots or skates are too loose, toes quickly get irritated in the toe box. If they are too tight, pressure leads to blisters and abrasions causing painful feet which may compromise control and lead to injuries or accidents. Tight boots or skates can compromise circulation. Do not put children in hand-me-downs. Skates that are too large or wide may lack proper ankle support leading to strains, sprains or even fractures. Runners in the winter may unconsciously change their foot strike pattern which can lead to overuse injuries. To increase traction on slippery surfaces, runners may land with the entire foot instead of the natural heel-to-toe strike. Lateral slippage may lead to groin pulls. Some runners are trying spikes that fit over their shoes when jogging in icy areas. Some problems to watch out for are: 1) FROSTBITE: Skin freezes when exposed to cold temperatures and high winds. With longer exposure blood vessels constrict and skin colour changes from blue to white. A feeling of numbness or burning may indicate frostbite. Wet feet are more prone to frostbite as are people with previous history of frostbite. Prevention involves changing wet clothing and avoiding the use of alcoholic beverages. Shield yourself from high winds and keep moving. Treatment involves putting fingers in armpit touching warm skin. Remove clothing from the affected area and avoid rubbing the skin. Immerse the affected area in warm (40C) water (20 - 30 minutes) until the affected area turns red. If blisters develop, add an antiseptic such as Betadine to the skin. If no water is available, keep affected areas warm with blankets or in contact with other person’s skin. See your medical doctor as soon as possible. 2) BLISTERS: Friction from ill-fitting foot gear can cause blisters. Do not pop a blister as it will then more easily infect. If it breaks on its own, use an antiseptic such as Betadine and cover with a sterile bandage. 3) HYPOTHERMIA: This affects the entire body and involves loss of body heat. Initially shivering will generate more body heat. If shivering stops, a person is not necessarily warmed, and this is sometimes a warning sign. Continued exposure to cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia. This is a medical emergency and professional care should be sought. 4)STRAINS AND SPRAINS: These are common especially with skiing and skating. They should be created with rest, ice compressions and elevate (RICE). Winter can be a fun season if proper care is taken. Attention to muscle flexibility, proper clothing and warm-up exercises will ensure a season of injury free fun. They’re working on a project that will add a special spice to holiday celebrations at Rouge Valley’s Festival of Trees, November 17-21 at the Pickering Recreation Complex, 18 67 Valley Farm Road. The special spice is ginger, but these are not smurflike characters in floppy hats working for St. Nick. They’re grade 10-12 baking stu- dents from Oshawa Central Collegiate, creating an entire town in miniature. First out of cardboard. Then later, once teacher Dave Brown approves the models, they’ll deliver the final full-scale product made of gin- gerbread. They’ve done this sort of thing before, so when you stroll through the Festival to check out the gingerbread town, expect the best. Brown’s students, aged any- where from 14 to 17, are building a Hansel and Gretel scene from a child’s fantasy – sans the witch. “After all, gingerbread and Christmas,” mused Brown. “They go hand in hand, don’t they?” Ask a kid They sure do; ask any kid. Brown’s students, toiling away in the bustling bake shop at Oshawa Central Collegiate, have turned out some impressive ginger- bread villages over the years for Sick Kids’ Hospital events, and now they’re making one for Rouge Valley. “We’ve set two world records for building gingerbread villages,” said Brown. “One year, 24 buildings went down, and that was the largest in the world at the time. Then last year we did a village with seventy-one buildings. Never before has anybody put together that much of a gingerbread village.” Not just little models that might go on a dinner table with a model train set running through the town, either. “The ones we made last year were huge,” Brown said. “One of the houses last year weighted 300 pounds. It was about three feet long and 2 1/2 feet wide.” That’s the scale of the gingerbread houses his students are creating for the Rouge Valley Festival of Trees. They will form a village of eight to ten chunky, tasty fantasy houses of fragrant gingerbread to be set up in a special gazebo reserved for them at the Festival, lit by Christmas lights that will reflect off marzipan, icing, candies and children’s shining faces. Brown’s students are good at this. They are talented young people who love what they do. “I have one girl who was with me since grade 10 – she just graduated last year – who placed gold in a Skills Ontario competition and then went on to place silver in Skills Canada baking competition. That’s second-best in all of Canada.” His baking classes are split about equally between young men and young women learning the noble art of making treats. The gingerbread village projects are partly for school, and partly a labor of holiday love. “It’s a school project, so they have to come up with a proposal of what they want to do. From there they do rough sketches and drawings. I give them the maximum size in which this can be done, and then they work within that guideline to build houses that will fit on a certain size board. They can use any theme they want. They make it first out of cardboard, and once I okay the cardboard version, they get to do it out of gingerbread.” What’s the best thing about it for the students? “The smiles on people’s faces,” said Brown. “What they see in this project is something that starts with them; starts with the students’ concept, and it has a purpose. Hosting the Mississauga Mus- tangs at the Ajax Community Centre on Sunday, the Shooting Stars suf- fered a 7-2 defeat. Goalkeeper April McCormick, back in net after getting over the flu bug, was outstanding, but even her solid contribution couldn’t stem the Mississauga tide, as the visitors scored several unan- swered goals to seal the victory. Defensive pairings of Heather Dietrich with Kaitlyn Swindells, and Lindsay Serjeantson with Brianna Campbell performed well, but the Mustangs were too strong in this contest. Lauren Lewthwaite led the way with a goal and an assist. Sarah Sidaway scored the other Ajax goal, with Sarah Salvator getting the other assist on the marker. Sisters set for soccer nationals St. Mary grads take another crack at title with Durham Lords By Paul Futhey Staff Writer DURHAM — Yo u can call it a soccer sister act. Sisters Ashley, a goalkeeper, and Abbie Visser, a defender/ midfielder, are teammates on the Durham College Lords’ women’s soccer team that’s competing at the national collegiate champion- ships this weekend. In their two years together with the Lords, they have contributed to consecutive provincial titles and subsequent berths in the national champion- ships. Durham finished fourth in the country last year, and is seeded the same this time around. Born 13 months apart (Ashley’s older), the two graduated from St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering during the double co- hort year in 2003 and enrolled in Durham College in the fall. Ashley is currently in the police program, and Abbie in nursing. This season, however, the two have found their respective sopho- more campaigns full of different kinds of challenges. In Ashley’s case, it’s been her back. She was the starting goal- keeper in her freshman year, rack- ing up shutouts in rapid succes- sion as Durham lost just once. A herniated disc, however, has forced her to the sidelines for the majority of this season. She did manage to make it into a pair of conference games but shortly after she returned, the injury — she’s had back troubles for more than two years now — was aggravated during a game against Centennial. Meanwhile, the club has benefit- ted from the solid play of fresh- man goalkeeper Morgan Kelly of Pickering. “It’s disappointing, yes,” says Ashley of not playing. “But I’m happy for Morgan. You can’t take her play away from her. I’d rather have Morgan in net and we win than me in net and we lose.” “Hopefully next year she comes back healthy,” says head coach Va so Vujanovic. “She’s work- ing hard, making sure Morgan’s ready.” Ashley’s experience could come in handy, however, and is ready to step in if called upon. Meanwhile, Abbie, after a fresh- man season in which she was named an OCAA all-star, found herself having to work her way into Vu janovic’s line-up in year two. Having not played that summer (work commitments) she had also missed the first four games of the season due to an incident in the na- tional bronze medal game the previous year. It stemmed from a Mount Royal Col- lege opponent taking liberties with Ashley. “She was being real- ly aggressive with my sister,” recalls Abbie. The situation esca- lated to the point where frustra- tion got the better of the younger sister and she lashed out — some- thing she knows she shouldn’t have done. By the time Abbie was eligible to return, Vujanovic was reluctant to make changes to personnel that had so far proven able to lead the division. “It was a little discouraging,” Abbie says. “But that motivated me harder at practice.” “That helped her to be hungrier and want to be a better player,” agrees Vujanovic. Indeed, by the end of the sea- son, she was back in the start- ing line-up and would score the game-winning goal over Humber in the provincial championship. OCAA female athlete of the week honours followed. Even with Ashley’s condition, the club, overall, is healthier than it was at this point last season — good news for a squad looking to medal at the nationals. A.J. The team won $320 last week at a Junior Cashspiel in London. They join the Annandale team of Lesley Pyne in the women’s event, while Tim March is entered in the junior men’s event. The following weekend sees the Mike’s Hard Lemonade senior men’s zone event being competed in Sutton Nov. 27 to 29. Crawford, Bean score to clinch championship for undefeated Panthers PICKERING — The Pickering Panthers peewee ‘AA’ rep hockey team was golden on the ice in the U.S. recently. The peewees went undefeated en route to the championship at the Can/Am Hockey Tourna- ment in Lake Placid, New York in games played at the site of the 1980 American ‘Miracle on Ice’ at the Olympic Games. The Panthers posted a 2-0 vic- tory over the Albany (New York) Storm in the final. After two score- less periods, the Panthers fired home the markers to capture the title. Maclin Crawford and Jordan Bean scored, with assists to Dylan Banks and Jake Kelly. Daniel Tomei and Jake Tka- chuk shared the shutout, thanks to strong defensive play from re- arguards Charles Dorey, Michael Hood, David Mott, Christopher Raguseo, Brian Smith and Ryan Wilkinson. The Panthers started the tour- ney with a 4-1 win over the Ne- pean Raiders. The Panthers built up a 4- 0 lead before the Raiders broke Tomei’s shutout bid in the third period. David Whorpole, Corrado Gianfriddo, Mott and Zack Munn scored, with assists to Bean with two, Crawford, Mott and team captain Louis Del Re. In Game 2, the Panthers played to a 2-2 draw with the New Eng- land Moose. The New Englanders owned a 2-0 lead through two periods. The Panthers responded with two third-period markers to earn the tie. No scoring details were avail- able. Pickering skated past the Albany Storm 5-3 in Game 3. Crawford scored twice to lead the way. Kelly, Jake Blondin and Bean were the other marksmen. Del Re recorded two assists, while Bean, Kelly and Whorpole added one apiece. The Panthers earned a ticket to the final after a 3-1 win over New England in Game 4. Brian Smith, Gianfriddo and Whorpole scored, with assists to Wilkinson and Brian Smith. Pickering also participated in the tournament’s skills competi- tion. The relay team of Bean, Del Re, Munn and Whorpole won the gold medal. Tomei competed in the goaltending challenge and Blondin was part of the shooting event. Glenn Smith coaches the team, assisted by Rob Blondin and Gord Crawford.
