Cosmo Jacobson is a liar who should not be trusted, Paul Burst- ein said in summing up his case in the long-running first-degree murder trial. He said Mr. Hall, 29, is an in- nocent man who is the victim of a conspiracy of collusion among Mr. Jacobson and other witnesses, who have portrayed him as the gunman who killed Roy Jones in February of 2001. During the course of his lengthy address to the eight men and four women on the jury, Mr. Burstein vilified Mr. Jacobson, who is also charged with first-degree murder in the slaying. “He is trying to shield himself from blame by pointing the finger at Sean Hall,” Mr. Burstein said. “His testimony should be viewed with great caution.” Mr. Jacobson, who was origi- nally put on trial with Mr. Hall, took the witness stand in his own defence in early September. He said he and Mr. Hall, who com- mitted a home invasion robbery in Pickering in June of 2000, came up with a plot to intimidate Mr. Jones, a security guard who saw Mr. Jacobson using credit cards stolen during the robbery and who was to be a key Crown witness on robbery charges that could send Mr. Jacobson to prison for several years. The plan was to menace Mr. Jones with a gun and warn him not to testify, Mr. Jacobson testified. But it went wrong when the man fought back and Mr. Hall shot him several times, he told the jury. On the stand, Mr. Jacobson por- trayed himself as a lookout the TE AMWORK GETS THE JOB DONE A.J. Such acts include tailgating, passing on the shoulder of a road, making rude gestures and changing lanes without signalling. If confronted by an ag- gressive driver, the health department says there are many ways to react safety. Drivers are encouraged to focus on driving, avoid dis- tractions, maintain a safe distant between vehicles and respect the right of way of pedestrians. “Do not challenge an ag- gressive driver,” said Ms. van der Loo. “When you reach your destination, you can call the police and report the behaviour.” In partnership with Dur- ham Regional Police Servic- es, the health department will have a number of public education displays across the region. Relief in sight for dealing with stress durhamregion.com PAGE 5 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, OCTOBER 10, 2004 PAGE 5 A/P EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR A better busing plan can be had with give and take T here’s an awfully long road of negotiations ahead be- fore we’ll arrive at a seamless, Durham-wide transit network. But, now that a proposal for a $39-million transit system has received the endorsement of a regional committee, that long road is paved with possibilities. Our elected officials must not give up until taxpayers here can board a bus and be whisked smoothly from Pickering to Clarington and all points in between. That’s what Durham residents have said they want. Our current patchwork of disjointed transit services is eas- ier on our wallets, but we get what we pay for. With separate municipal transit authorities, GO Transit and handicapped transit all operating on different schedules and fare systems, it is a nightmare for anyone who needs to travel any distance in Durham Region by bus. The premise of one transit system is sound, but there are hurdles to overcome. The financial, legal and staffing challenges are huge. And each municipality can be expected to be looking out for itself first at the negotiating table. Uxbridge and Port Perry will no doubt be lobbying for a bus route as part of the deal. The southern municipalities, meanwhile, have issues with the idea of handing over their buses, land and garages to the Region without compensation. Whitby, in particular, has just paid for new buses through a debenture, and taxpayers there would still have to pay off the debt. But politicians will have to look at what’s good for Durham taxpayers as a whole; consultants hired by the Re- gion say that once an asset has been paid for by the public, the public shouldn’t have to pay for it again. A pooling of resources without compensation might be the simplest and most cost-effective route for taxpayers in the long run. There are options to be considered when it comes to financing the system. If the cost is split between ridership and property tax assessment, for example, almost every mu- nicipality will pay more for transit than it currently does, but the financial impact in the north will be less drastic than an equal split. Compromise will therefore be key when it comes to ham- mering out the details. While individual politicians will be looking out for the interests of their own constituents first, they’ll have to be prepared for some give and take to get this job done. And taxpayers will have to realize enhanced services won’t come without growing pains and cost. School board bus policy causes consternation To the editor: Re: ‘Busing hope for parents’, Oct. 20. Introducing Kyle A.: A five-year-old in senior kindergarten, he’s a handsome little redhead who likes singing songs, spell- ing, stories and gym. Ky le goes home and watches his mom cry after she makes call after call trying to find quality day care that would allow him to stay at the school he deserves to attend. When the Durham District School Board puts boundaries on access to education, such as taking away bus services, it limits Kyle’s potential. It is shameful that the school board is building barriers. There are bumps ahead, but Durham residents will benefit from a new system R esearchers have said that people worry more about money than death, marriage and family. And there’s no denying that money anxieties have caused family fallouts, wars and even suicides. Now the biggest threat to a region- wide transit system could very well be the same thing. Amalgamated transit won’t be a hard sell in south Durham. Residents in the region’s four southern municipalities with big transit systems — Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa — already pay between $110 and $156 on their tax bills (for a house assessed at $250,000). But Clarington could see a tax jump of up to $118, while north Durham resi- dents could see a whopping $159 added to their bills. The increased bill, though, will give north Durham what everyone thought was next to impossible: some form of linked transit in a dial-a-ride system. And just like paying for education when you don’t have kids, so too, will transit be billed. Having an increased and less expensive GO Transit service will help sell it, as well. One of the proposed formulas, to bill taxpayers an amount that’s half based on assessment and half based on rider- ship, would be a good compromise to lessen the blow and level the playing field. Local municipalities such as Osha- wa and Ajax that have concerns about handing over their transit assets on a platter with no money in exchange have valid worries. While it makes sense that taxpayers should not have to pay twice, the deal still leaves someone to pay out- standing debts. Ta ke a guess who that will be. But regardless of the bumps in the long transit road ahead, there’s no doubt that Durham Region needs this. Des- perately. If we want to reduce pollution, build our economy and make life more accessible for those who don’t or can’t drive, we need to make it so residents can travel easily and quickly from Pick- ering to Port Perry to Port Darlington. Let’s hope it happens. Carly Foster’s column ap- pears every third Sunday. E-mail cfoster@durhamregion.com. He tried to plead guilty to manslaughter at the beginning of the trial, a move rejected by the Crown. Mr. Burstein told the jury this week that Mr. Jacobson had remained silent about his version of events until he took the stand this fall — after he had heard the Crown’s case against Mr. Hall, who denies taking part in the rob- bery or the murder. The bulk of the Crown’s case against Mr. Hall is based upon statements he made to undercover Durham Regional Police officers during the summer of 2001, several months after the killing. The cops moved into an apartment in Mr. Hall’s Brantford building and posed as successful criminals with ex- tensive underworld connections. The jury has seen and heard numer- ous taped clips in which Mr. Hall tells the cops — he knew them as Mick and Jake — about his role in the murder and the home invasion robbery that led to Mr. Jones’s shooting. Mr. Hall, who also took the stand in his own defence, doesn’t deny that he made the incriminating statements; but he does deny that they were true. He has repeatedly said he was “big- ging up” — bragging and exaggerat- ing — to impress Mick and Jake, with whom he hoped to enter into illegal enterprises that would provide him the money and criminal cachet he desired. The damning evidence heard in court gave Mr. Jacobson the basis he needed to spin a tale about the events of Feb. 4, 2001 — and pin the shooting blame on Mr. Hall, Mr. Burstein said. He said Mr. Jacobson conspired with other witnesses who have testified dur- ing this trial to “put it all on Sean Hall.” Those witnesses included Mr. Jacob- son’s cousin and a friend who was involved in the home invasion, both of whom were called by the Crown, Mr. Burstein said. Mr. Burstein said the jury should find reasonable doubt about the state- ments Mr. Hall made to the undercover police. His various accounts of events surrounding the murder were rife with inconsistencies. In bragging to the un- dercover police officers, Mr. Hall got virtually every detail about the murder wrong, Mr. Burstein said. “Mr. Hall doesn’t know what to say because he wasn’t there.” The case is expected to go to the jury for deliberations next week. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, NOVEMBER 7, 2004 PAGE 7 A/P Country Craft Show 22,000 SQUARE FOOT WAREHOUSE FILLED WITH COUNTRY CRAFTS & GIFTS November 12,13 &14 2004 Pickering Market Trade Centre First Time in Canada Hourly Specials A SHOW TO REMEMBER FOR PRICES AND QUALITY! 401 Bayly S t .Brock Rd.Squires Beach Rd . I’m disappointed. Why couldn’t he just fill this tooth again? A.It’s a natural response that if an old filling breaks, all we need to do is put a new filling back. In all probability, the old filling might have been in place for 10 to 15 years, so if a new filling were to be replaced,it could conceivably last for another 10 to 15 years. And that would be good for most patients. Or so it seems. If the filling is small, then the correct treatment would be to refill, but if the filling is big, then the correct treatment would be to crown it. (Sometimes it is hard for the patient to determine what is small and what is big. Also, the piece that came off may be small, but the remaining piece still left in the tooth could be big.) So why do we need to crown a tooth if a big filling breaks? Why can’t we just fill it instead? The following are points that we should consider: 1. The problem here is not the filling, the concern is the remaining tooth structure around the filling. The bigger the filling is, the weaker the surrounding tooth is. Every time this tooth is filled and refilled, the remaining tooth structures will become weaker, so it wouldn’t take much for this tooth to crack and fracture in the future. 2. We do not want this tooth to crack and fracture. If it cracks under the gum line, or into the nerve chamber, it becomes a major reconstructive nightmare. 3. As we age, teeth naturally become more brittle, this is more so in teeth with bigger fillings. A crown would be needed to prevent a crack or fracture happening. 4. Teeth with big fillings are also more likely to develop microscopic cracks. In its early stage, there are no symptoms and they don’t even show up on an x-ray. If allowed to fully develop, they will result in a fracture of the tooth. Of course, the final decision rests with you. The dentist can only suggest what is best for you. If you’re not ready for a crown, you should ask for other treatment options. Whenever there is a lack of mobility in nerve tissue you can experience symptoms of pain, tingling, numbness, decreasing range of motion and itchy sensations. All of these things are danger signals from the nervous system that something is wrong. Many of the clients we see in physiotherapy, have pain that has been assessed and treated many times but they have some of the symptoms mentioned above. Sometimes we find these clients have nerve tension or a lack of flexibility or mobility of the nerve in relation to the surrounding muscles and soft tissues. This problem can be resolved by specific assessment by the physiotherapist, of nerve tension patterns and the prescription of specific nerve mobilization techniques. WITH THIS COUPON. EXPIRES NOVEMBER 30, 2004 (BN Natural Foods) Nerve Tension Problems Don’t be S.A.D For most of the country the coming of winter is inevitable. For some this means a change in mood and eating habits. This could be a sign of Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD. SAD is regarded as a major type of depression.Symptoms are a loss of energy, change in appetite (especially a craving for sweet or starchy foods), tendency to oversleep, difficulty concentrating, irritability, increased sensitivity to social rejection and an avoidance of social situations (not wanting to leave the house). It occurs seasonally, usually beginning in early winter. It is estimated that four to six per cent of people may have winter depression, while another 10 to 20 per cent may have a mild case of SAD. Women, especially those between the ages of 20 and 40, are four times as likely to be affected than men. SAD usually doesn’t occur in people younger than 20. The chances of getting SAD decrease as you get older. While there is no exact cause, the cure is very straightforward - more light during the winter months. For mild cases, a light box, a device that provides artificial light, is prescribed. Patients spend anywhere from 30 minutes (usually in the morning) to two or three hours a day using these boxes. If the light therapy helps, it should be used until springtime. As with any kind of medical condition, if you think you have SAD,consult a doctor, preferably one that is familiar with SAD. Do not attempt self-diagnosis. SAD can be treated, so don’t let winter, or summer, get the best of you. The staff at Rougemount Physiotherapy durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, NOVEMBER 7, 2004 PAGE 9 P Wr ong land protected in legislation, council members contend By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — The face of north Pickering would change dramatically under the Province’s proposed Greenbelt legislation, say some Pickering council- lors. “There is no north Pick- ering when you look at that (map),” said Ward 1 Re- gional Councillor Maurice Brenner at Pickering coun- cil Monday. “North Picker- ing as a rural community does not exist.” He was disappointed to see the large area from Greenwood east to the Whitby border and from just south of Hwy. 7 to the Uxbridge townline essen- tially left open for develop- ment. “The Province (talks) about the provincial poli- cy on agriculture use but they’ve taken an entire area that is richer in land than the agricultural assembly and they’ve taken those lands that are potentially higher agriculture land for development,” he said. Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles pointed out the rural areas that are left unprotected. “The residents of Green River and White- vale who have been very sup- portive of a green- belt are going to be very disap- pointed they are not included in the Greenbelt,” he said. Under the pro- posed legislation, which was re- leased and introduced into the legislature Thursday, all of the Duffins Rouge Ag- ricultural Preserve and an area south of Hwy. 7 to the Ajax border is protected, while a large section of rural farmland northeast of Greenwood, and the fed- eral airport lands northwest of Brougham and northeast of Green River are left open for future development. The provincially-owned Seaton lands, which abut Whitevale, have been des- ignated as a “settlement area outside the greenbelt.” Staff from the Pickering planning department gave a detailed overview of the legislation at the council meeting. Last week Mayor Dave Ryan said he was disap- pointed about the inclusion of the entire agricultural preserve in the greenbelt. The City’s growth manage- ment study calls for the southern portion (called the Cherrywood neigh- bourhood) of the preserve to be de- veloped. “We have a concern on the precise boundary of the greenbelt... We don’t see a lot of rationale for how the boundar- ies were decided on,” said Neil Car- roll, director of planning and development. “We see no rationale for the inclusion of the Cher- rywood neighbourhood in the greenbelt. We see no rationale for why the area around Greenwood was ex- cluded from the greenbelt; this is prime agricultural land.” Planning staff presented an alternate map for the boundary of the greenbelt in Pickering. It excluded the southern portion of the pre- serve while adding a buffer around Whitevale and land in northeast Pickering to the Province’s map. Mr. Carroll said lands designated as permanent agricultural in the Region’s Official Plan are lands that are going be designated as agriculture and with that designation comes restric- tions regarding what can be done on the land. The greenbelt area in- cludes an agricultural sys- tem, natural system and settlement areas, while the preserve is cur- rently designated as agricultural in the Region’s Offi- cial Plan. “Within the greenbelt we are going to have forced agricultur- al — the potential of factory farms and grain-drying operations at the intersection of Finch and Altona,” Mayor Ryan said. Coun. Pickles pointed out the restrictions are going to devastate farmers who can- not make a living on farm- ing alone and need to use their property for another business, which based on the in- formation in the draft plan would not be allowed. “The bureau- crats at Queen’s Park have missed the boat again,” said Ward 3 Re- gional Council- lor Rick Johnson. “Not only with the Oak Ridges Moraine but also with the Greenbelt Act. The significance of the greenspace is (it is) land that couldn’t be developed anyway.” Coun. Johnson pointed out the protected area in- cluded the Greenwood and Claremont Conservation areas, land with tributaries that is swampy, and land that already has easements on it protecting it as greens- pace. As well, in northwest Pickering much of the area included is Transport Canada land that has been designated as park space already. “It doesn’t take a scientist to create what they’ve done here,” he said. “Whether they pass the legislation or not it was going to be greenspace.” Please print clearly Please make cheque payable to: The Ajax-Pickering News Advertiser Santa Claus Fund,130 Commercial Avenue, Ajax, Ontario, L1S 2H5 Enclosed is my cheque or money order for $...................... Environmentally minded students have chance to earn more green Employees asked to have 20-20 building vision By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING — The Rouge Valley Health System Foun- dation wants Pickering resi- dents to join in the final leg of its Vital Links campaign. John Wiersma, chairman of the campaign’s corporate subcommittee, asked at Monday’s council meeting for the City’s support. “Now it is time for ev- eryone, the residents of Pickering, to join us as we raise the final dollars in our campaign,” Mr. Wiersma said. “I’m seeking council’s endorsement to encourage residents to get on board with the Vital Links cam- paign and donate to their local hospital.” The money is being raised to support the $47-million redevelopment project, which is expected to begin construction in May or June 2006. The community was called on to raise $13.7 mil- lion for the project and the total is currently at $12.1 million. “This project is long over- due and when it is complete the residents of Pickering will have new services at their hospital,” Mr. Wiersma said. Those services include a larger emergency depart- ment better equipped to meet the demands of the growing community, a frac- ture clinic, a larger diagnos- tic clinic and an addition of 20 long-term care beds. He asked that the City match contributions made by its staff and explained how many local businesses are using a 20-20 program where the employee do- nates $20 and it is matched by the employer. “That just might be giv- ing up coffee for the month of December,” said Mr. Wi- ersma, who recently retired as chief executive officer of Ve r idian Corporation. Mayor Dave Ryan accept- ed the partnership. “Council has advised me that we do accept the chal- lenge,” he said. Council passed a motion committing to raise $16,000 between the City and its employees. The City’s share is capped at $8,000, with any shortfall to be raised through corporate donors. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, NOVEMBER 7, 2004 PAGE 11 P On November 8 ELECT JOE BROWN City of Pickering -Local Council - Ward 2 for Info: 905-831-3522 ELECT BROWN JOE I WILL LISTEN TO YOUR CONCERNS AND BE AVAILABLE FOR YOU I WILL FIGHT FOR RESPONSIBLE TAXATION I WILL PROMOTE PLANNED GROWTH I WILL PROTECT OUR WATERFRONT I WILL STRIVE FOR INCREASED HEALTH SERVICES I WILL BE YOUR VOICE IN CITY COUNCIL I WILL TAKE ACTION Want to know what’s happening in Pickering? Changes include supporting water- shed plans, minimizing hard surfaces in the rural area, setting a woodland target of 30 per cent, limiting hamlet devel- opment to 25 per cent of the current population and prohibiting golf courses in agricultural areas, a report said. The Region is also proposing cut- ting back its involvement in commercial planning to proposals to those greater than 56,000 sq m, or that would affect a market population of more than 75,000 or would negatively impact designated central areas in Durham. Proposed changes to the popula- tion, employment and urban land section of the OP — including whether urban boundaries should be expanded — will be presented soon, said Alex Georgieff, the commissioner of planning. Municipalities have until Dec. 7 to make further comments. A special plan- ning committee meeting is planned for Jan. 4 and 5, where the recommenda- tions will be discussed. Sexual health clinic stays DURHAM — The health depart- ment’s sexual health clinic at the Oshawa Centre will remain after the works com- mittee voted to renew the lease for five more years. The clinic has been used mostly by teens since it opened in 1994, and staff have found the location works very well for the program, a report to last week’s works committee said. The Region will pay more than $30,000 a year for the five-year lease, with the funds to come out of the health department budget. The lease must still be approved by regional council on Nov. 10. Waste Management Canada awarded $3 million contract for services DURHAM — Waste Management Canada (WMC) will continue to provide containers, haulage and recycling of wastewater by-products after the Re- gion another three-year contract. The company will receive more than $3 million to take care of material and ash generated at the Harmony Creek, Pringle Creek and Duffins Creek water pollution control plants for another three years, a report to last week’s works committee meeting said. The funds will come from the 2004 sanitary sewerage budget. The contract must still be approved by regional coun- cil on Nov. 10. Disabled parking fines increased DURHAM — Parking in a handi- capped spot will soon cost you double. The Region will be upping its fine for parking in disabled spots from $150 to $300. New provisions in the Municipal Act require cities and towns to have a minimum set fine of $300. The Region will also not offer an early payment op- tion, a report to last week’s works com- mittee said. Application and approval must be sought from the Ontario Court of Justice before the new fines come into effect. Goods and services bids now available online DURHAM — Companies can now access available bids with the Region after a bidding opportunities section was launched on Durham’s website this week. The Region purchases many things from private companies, including building, road and sewer construction, food, computer networking, energy, consulting and vehicles, the bidding section says. Companies can now view all available bids from the Region, and access forms and contacts at http:// www.region.durham.on.ca/finance. asp?nr=div&app=bidopps. Bayly Street speeds being reduced in Ajax locations AJAX — The speed along Bayly Street will be decreased in several areas, because of new development and signals in Ajax and Pickering, a report to the works committee said. The speed will be reduced from 80 km to 70 km between Lakeridge and Salem roads, and from 80 km to 60 km between Bayly and the entrance to the new Pickering Flea Market at Squires Beach Road. The Region’s traffic and parking bylaw must be amended at the Nov. 10 council meeting for the change to be enacted. The speed along Westney Road will be decreased 200 metres north of Rossland Road to Taunton Road because of increasing development in the area, a report to works committee said. The Region’s traffic and parking bylaw must be amended at the Nov. 10 council meeting for the change to be enacted. Pickering flea market traffic issue leads to changes PICKERING — U-turns will soon be prohibited along Bayly Street at the Pick- ering Flea Market entrance at Squires Beach Road, a report to the works com- mittee said. Operational problems have emerged because of motorists making u-turns in the area to head back in a westbound direction. The Region’s traffic and parking bylaw must be amended at the Nov. 10 council meeting for the change to be enacted. Email: askordakis@sympatico.ca Seven from city part of junior crews in China PICKERING — Picker- ing paddlers helped the Canadian junior team to a bronze medal at the World Dragon Boat Champion- ships in Shanghai, China recently. Seven local paddlers were part of the Team Canada juniors at the worlds from Oct. 20 to 24. For most, it was their first taste of inter- national competition and they rose to the occasion. The group consisted of Pine Ridge Secondary School students Kyle Smith, Maia Kirk, Karl Poyhonen and Ian Stewart, along with former Pine Ridge students Cait- lin Heggie and Emily Moss. Jessica Sellers, of Dunbar- ton High School, was also part of the team. Kirk and Smith were cho- sen for the Canada ‘A’ boat that took a bronze medal in the 200-metre mixed crew category. With a crew of 12 boys and eight girls, Canada ‘A’ covered the distance in 50.282 seconds, less than two seconds behind the winning German and sec- ond-place Russian crews. The medals held extra sig- nificance as Canada ‘A’ had to defeat the powerful Chi- nese national team to earn a berth in the final. Canada ‘A’ crews finished fourth in each of the other four events (open 1,000m, open 500m, open 200m and mixed 500m), missing med- als by a narrow margin. Te am Canada junior coach Scott Madill and as- sistant coach Jill Norman were quick to point out there is more international competition to come: the core of the team has already qualified for next year’s World Dragon Boat Cham- pionships in Berlin, Ger- many. And, many paddlers will participate in the 2006 Club Crew Championships in Toronto. The Pickering High Trojans (6- 0), by virtue of their 25-0 West Division semifinal victory over the Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School Cougars, host the Oshawa Eastdale Eagles (4-1-1) at 1:30 p.m. Eastdale earned a trip to the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athlet- ics (LOSSA) semifinal after a 9-0 victory over the Bowmanville High School Talons in one East Division semifinal. Meanwhile, the five-time de- fending Durham champion St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Monarchs (5-1) will travel to Osha- wa to meet the Oshawa Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School Saints (6-0) at noon in the other LOSSA semifinal. The Monarchs took care of the Pine Ridge Sec- ondary School Pumas 24-3 in the We st Division semifinal Thursday night. The Saints, which finished first in the East Division, earned their semifinal berth with a 24-6 win over the Sinclair Secondary School Celtics (2-4) in the other East semifinal. The semifinal winners play for the LOSSA senior championship at the Oshawa Civic Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. The two semifi- nal losers play in the ‘B’ final at 11 a.m. Monarchs’ all-star quarterback Erik Glavic put on a clinic both of- fensively and defensively to lead St. Mary past Pine Ridge in the play- off contest at Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School in Ajax. Playing under less than ideal conditions, Pine Ridge (3-2) quick- ly found itself down by three as Glavic opened the scoring with a field goal from within the Pine Ridge red zone. The field goal was set up by a poor 10-yard punt by the Pumas, giving St. Mary excel- lent early field position. The second quarter saw Glavic connect with Jesse Andrews on a long pass-and-run touchdown. Shortly thereafter, Glavic would find his favourite receiver, Aaron Racioppa, sending St. Mary deep into Pine Ridge territory where a quarterback option saw Glavic lateral to score the second touch- down of the quarter. During the first half, Pine Ridge only seemed to be able to gener- ate offence with their punt return team, as they struggled with the soggy field. St. Mary led 17-1 at halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, Pine Ridge appeared to finally wake up offensively in the fourth quarter. But, a costly turnover deep in the St. Mary red zone complete- ly zapped the Pumas’ momentum. St. Mary would subsequently con- cede a safety after failing to gain a first down. On the ensuing kickoff, Pine Ridge once again exploited the St. Mary specialty team to gain excellent field position. Another Pumas’ turnover, however, gave the ball back to St. Mary and shortly thereafter Glavic would reach the end zone with one of his patented long runs to break the game wide open. Meanwhile, in the other West semifinal, the visiting Notre Dame Cougars gave the undefeated Tro- jans all they could handle –– at least for half of the game. Played in a continual downpour, the game featured plenty of fum- bles and miscues by both offences, with the first half ending scoreless. In the third quarter, a broken play on a botched punt attempt would put the Trojans in solid field position. A couple of plays later, Troy Seviwright-Adams ran the ball into the end zone to break the scoreless deadlock. Romel Reid added a pair of touchdowns and wide receiver Hassan Hazime added another. Mohammed Kha- waja added a convert.
