HomeMy WebLinkAboutNA2004_10_20 Five cars damaged on Pickering street PICKERING – Durham Regional Po- lice are investigating a rash of vehicle vandalism that occurred in a residen- tial Pickering neighbourhood over the weekend. Police were called Saturday morn- ing by a resident of Strouds Lane who discovered a car in his driveway had been scratched sometime during the night. Police responded and found a total of five cars on the street had been keyed in the early-morning hours of Oct. 16, according to a report. One-year move affects institutional uses By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING – The City is putting a freeze on institutional uses in agricul- tural areas. On Monday night Pickering council passed an interim control bylaw to pre- vent building uses such as churches or schools in areas zoned agricultural for one year while staff reviews land-use planning policies to decide what are the appropriate institutional uses for lands zoned rural agricultural. The freeze applies to land between Hwy. 401 and the CP rail tracks in the urban area and in the rural area except for lands owned by the federal or pro- vincial government and lands subject to the agricultural assembly zoning order. “There is no need to apply it to the federal lands or to the lands already under a control bylaw,” said Neil Car- roll, director of planning. “There is no concern that a major institutional use would come in because those lands are already controlled.” When the issue was discussed at a recent management forum meeting there were concerns about limiting development in rural areas. “This won’t prevent us from moving forward with the Duffin Heights neighbour- hood,” Mr. Car- roll said. “This could prevent a landowner from going into Duffin Heights and doing a land use that goes against the City’s vision.” The City is currently conducting a study plan for the Duffin Heights area around Brock Road and south of the railway. The land in the area is owned by both the City and private owners. If the interim control bylaw wasn’t passed the private owners could have intro- duced uses that wouldn’t mesh with the City’s plan. At that meeting Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson also brought up concerns about the bylaw limiting But public board says any changes unlikely this school year By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM – Following sustained public pressure, Durham’s public school board has reopened its contro- versial transportation policy. But while an ad hoc committee of trustees will try and tinker with the policy, passed six months ago, several Durham District School Board mem- bers warned it won’t be a quick pro- cess, and that at the end of the day, surplus seating might not be reintro- duced. “I am surprised,” said Ajax resident Denise Barrett, who has led parental opposition to the policy, of trustees’ change of heart. “I think in some ways it’s a hollow victory because the board has told us (students) might not get on the bus this year.” Ms. Barrett spoke at Monday’s board meeting - and heckled at some points. Like hundreds of other parents in Dur- ham, the end of surplus seating has created a logistical nightmare, since in some homes one child has busing yet a second is left at the curb when the bus pulls away. “I think they should have done this on April 21,” said Whitby parent How- ard Abbey in an interview. “I think fine-tuning is right. I don’t think sur- plus seating needs to be brought back in.” He believes surplus seating was used in the past as “a catch-all” to deal with a number of transportation issues. Trustees have been debating the policy for months. Several close votes have been taken, but there was never quite enough support to suspend the board’s rules of procedure, required to reopen the policy. The difference this time was Ajax Wards 3 and 4 Trustee Lisa Hill, who voted in favour of Whit- by Trustee John Dolstra’s motion to bend the rules. Land trust spokesman Ian Attridge made the suggestion during a statutory public meeting held by the City Thurs- day to gather feedback on proposed official plan amendments. The City wants to change the urban boundary to accommodate its Growth Manage- ment Study (GMS). About 50 people attended the meeting. The aim of the land trust is to pro- tect farmland and rural features, Mr. Attridge said. “We’re seeking contributions around the province of easements or donations of land,” he stated. “We’ve seen a lot of farmland converted away from farm use.” The Growth Management Study area covers the Seaton and agricul- tural preserve portions of north Pick- ering. The area is roughly bounded by the CPR tracks to the south, Brock Road to the east, Hwy. 7 to the north and the border with Markham and Scarborough to the west. The amendment would see the urban boundary moved to Hwy. 7 to accommodate the development set out in the GMS. The plan does show about two-thirds of the area set aside for open space or countryside uses, said Catherine Rose, a manager with the City’s planning and development department. “[The] extensive natural heritage must be protected. Email: service@pickeringhonda.com He and other trustees tore a strip off Queen’s Park, after a provincial spokeswoman, commenting on the board’s policy change in the media, said boards should not be changing their transportation policies based on a draft provincial transportation model. It forecasts an 18 per cent cut in the board’s transportation grant next year. “I am really disillusioned w ith Queen’s Park... and what has happened in the last week or so,” Trustee Dol- stra said, inviting ministry officials to the board to clear up the confusion. Pickering Trustee Sherry Croteau said the board passed the policy “with the best of intentions.” Suspending procedural rules to approve it in the first place was not done to keep people in the dark, but to allow them enough time to prepare for the coming school year, she said. “We did disenfranchise a lot of peo- ple, a lot of children across the region,” she said. “I think we have made some errors in the policy and there is room for improvement.” Trustees Susan Shetler (Oshawa), Kathleen Hopper (Oshawa) and Eliz- abeth Roy, board chairwoman and Whitby trustee, voted against suspend- ing the rules. Trustee Shetler said there shouldn’t be confusion over why the board changed its policy: it wasn’t because of the dire forecast in the new provincial model, but because the board is mov- ing towards joint busing with the Dur- ham Catholic board. She said every trustee should have been at meetings of the ad hoc transportation commit- tee, which previously recommended the policy changes, to understand the rationale and “so the waffling doesn’t start as soon as you start getting com- plaints.” Trustee Roy in an interview said the context of why the board changed its policy is important, noting it was done mainly to align the Durham boards’ busing policies at the urging of the Province, not because of the pending provincial model and expectations of less funding. The previous government was to in- troduce a new model this school year, saying boards would have to be in a consortium in order to qualify for funding. The Durham boards received rough- ly $241,000 to set up and run a consor- tium, approved in principle last year. But the criterion of having to be in a consortium was deferred by the Lib- eral government, which is currently receiving input on the model. During a two-hour hearing before three members of the Ontario Court of Appeal, at Osgoode Hall in Toronto, lawyers representing the middle-aged couple (known as Mr. and Mrs. Smith because their real names cannot be re- vealed in order to protect the identities of the two victims, now aged 17 and 18) stressed that their clients, described as having “disabilities and deficits,” were “ill-equipped” to raise the boys, who they took from Ms. Smith’s sister be- fore her passing. Presiding over the hearing were James MacPherson, Jean-Marc Labrosse and Eleanore A. Cronk. The couple was originally sentenced to nine months in prison by Ontario Ju stice Donald Halikowski on July 5 of this year. Seven months prior, the Smiths each pleaded guilty to three counts of forcible confinement, three counts of assault with a weapon and three counts of failing to provide the necessaries of life. However, the sentence issued by Justice Halikowski received immediate backlash from members of the pub- lic and others, and Durham Region Crown Attorney John Scott later rec- ommended that the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General consider an appeal of the sentence. In late July, the Province announced that it would ap- peal the sentence. On Friday, lawyer Ian Scott, repre- senting Ontario’s Ministry of the At- torney General, noted he was seeking an increase from the nine-month sen- tence to an appropriate penitentiary time (more than two years) because the boys suffered 13 and a half years of abuse at the hands of their aunt and uncle, who were “in a position of trust” and meted out “egregious abuse.” He added that there were “inappropriate principles at play in the lower court.” As the hearing began, Mr. Scott noted that Justice Halikowski’s original sentence failed to consider the Smiths’ breach of trust, questioned their im- pact on the victims and faulted the Oshawa court judge for imposing con- current sentences. He also questioned whether the boys at all suffered from fetal alco- hol syndrome, which the Smiths and their defense attorneys claim led to the couple caging the boys because of their unruly behaviour. The couple “engaged in a long and systemic campaign of torture that de- stroyed the childhood of these boys. (The Smiths) largely stole the child- hood of these two boys,” said Mr. Scott. “(Justice Halikowski) made numer- ous errors in principle that make the nine-month sentence wholly inade- quate.” Tina Yuen, also representing the at- torney general, added that the Smiths were well aware their actions were wrong because they “engaged in deceit to conceal their behaviour for 13 and a half years — that can’t happen by accident. How can that be unless (the Smiths) took steps to make sure?” During the proceedings, Mr. Scott noted he and his colleague would be seeking six- to eight-years in prison for Ms. Smith and three- to five-years for Mr. Smith, as originally requested by Soula Olver, an assistant Durham Crown attorney who worked the case in Oshawa. Christopher Hicks, one of two law- yers defending the Smiths, said the couple “weren’t capable of handling these problems (associated with rais- ing the boys)... and really did their best.” He added that the couple took the boys to doctors, specialists and was in constant contact with their school. “They were clearly concerned about the boys,” said Mr. Hicks. Ju stice Cronk noted that Justice Halikowski had “spent a huge amount of time” on the case, but that in his sentencing report “there is hardly any- thing on what they did to the boys... but (at other times) he describes it as near torture.” Added Justice Labrosse: “Conduct to me is the most important part relating to sentencing.” The defense continued to point out that the boys were making progress at school and Mr. Hicks added the couple “failed to reach out for help. They went to see doctors, but they should have reached out to other agencies.” Each side were asked by the three- member panel about Justice Halikows- ki’s original sentence. Dennis Lenzin, Mr. Hicks’ colleague, said the term “is not a trivial sen- tence... they’re going to have a hard time in jail.” Mr. Scott noted the Smiths’ acts were “horrendous enough that the sentence is inappropriate.” The Ontario Court of Appeal will now review the evidence and is ex- pected to make a ruling in the coming weeks. The City’s plan calls for the lower half of the preserve to be developed, while the upper half would remain open space or agriculture. The provincial government, which owns the lands in the Seaton area, has repeatedly said the ag preserve should be included in the Golden Horseshoe Greenbelt while it plans on allowing Seaton to be developed. The Province’s latest plan for Seaton was released recently and it calls for be- tween 45,000 and 60,000 residents. The Pickering plan has 39,000 residents in Seaton and 37,900 in Cherrywood in the southern portion of the preserve. Mr. Attridge said, “I think the City can consider itself fortunate it has these easements,” noting in the U.S., cities are spending millions to buy land and stop urban sprawl. “The City has a unique opportunity and an agricultural asset in its hands. Yo u can capitalize on the new eco- nomic engine, namely quality of life. We support the retention of the lands,” he added. Tom Melymuk, the division head, corporate projects and policy, said Mr. Attridge worked with the City to place the easements on the agricultural pre- serve. “The City can not unilaterally trans- fer the easements. The landowner also has to agree,” he noted. “It’s a huge leap. These easements have been valu- able.” Allowing development in the lower half of the preserve “stops leapfrogging into Seaton,” Mr. Melymuk said. The Province is using the Ontario Planning and Development Act to come up with it’s proposal for Seaton. The OPDA “gives the minister (of mu- nicipal affairs) the power to plan in an area he so designates. He did knowing we were planning.” The act “effectively lets the minister make the decision. The City started it’s process and it intends to finish the process. We will continue the planning process that’s ground in very good sci- ence.” Environmentalist Jim Robb wanted the preserve to remain as is, because it links the Rouge and Duffins corridor. Mr. Robb called the corridor a “pane of glass around the ag preserve. We don’t want that pane of glass broken.” Ann Joyner, of Dillon Consulting, the firm retained by the City to prepare the Growth Management Study, said the pane of glass analogy is “incorrect. What we need to do here is appropri- ate planning. The Province requires an integrated growth management study with the environment first, which is what we’ve done here. It’s a very open process.” Ms. Rose said the official plan amendment will go before council’s executive committee on Nov. 22 for consideration. They are facilitators, teachers, illustrators of what is dear and important. My friend Anna is one such person. Every year Anna has a Thanksgiving dinner, and every year it is something my wife and I move hell and high water to attend. Anna is a con- summate chef and inevitably she lays out a repast fit for roy- alty. But the dinner, in truth, is secondary to the real reason we come. Anna has that rarest of gifts — she is what I will call an “alchemist of the spirit.” She is able to bring just the right people together at just the right time. I have been to her table a dozen times at least and every time, without ex- ception, I have met someone I find infinitely interesting, fascinating or just plain nice. Someone I would like to get to know better. Someone I leave calling a friend. Anna’s talent is much hard- er than it sounds. Most of us can recall dinner parties or get-togethers that looked great on paper but died a thousand yawning deaths, because, in- explicably, there just was no chemistry, no spark. I’m con- vinced there’s something in each of us, call it soul, call it spirit, call it whatever, that looks for the same in others. When you find it in another, there is instant friendship, conversation is easy, laughter flows and listening is a plea- sure. When you don’t, well... that’s why we have liquor. But there is something else that Anna puts into her Thanksgiving dinners that calls me back again and again: ritual. At some point in every Thanksgiving feast, the table grows quiet and, one by one, those attending are given the floor to share what they are “thankful” for. It’s a little thing and, I am sure, not unique to Anna’s table alone, but it has tremendous power and reso- nance with those who par- take. When people pause, and think and clarify what they are thankful for, you learn a great deal about them, and sometimes about yourself. At this latest dinner two remark- able things happened, at least from my standpoint. Anna’s mother, Polly, a woman of re- markable strength and intel- lect, and well on in her years, spoke about the end of her life and the enormous joy she took from looking back and looking around and recogniz- ing all of the love that had come her way. She was fear- less and happy. Her words took my breath away. The second momentous event was seeded at Anna’s but actually bore fruit later that night, as I lay in bed read- ing. My 9-year-old came into the room and sat on my side of the bed, something obvi- ously on his mind. At Anna’s dinner, when his turn came, he had said, voracious reader that he is, that he was thank- ful, simply, for books. But now, he said turning to me, he wished he had said some- thing else. He looked at me and, little tears just behind his eyes, said that he wished he had said he was thankful that his Dad was still here and getting better. Thank you, son. And thank you, Anna. Sunderland resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Health solutions require constructive input To the editor: Re: ‘Cut from the top’, Romas Stas, letter to the editor, Oct. 13. In our society everyone is entitled to their opinion, but Dr. Stas’s latest letter has upset a number of people both in- side and outside Rouge Val- ley. Since 1954, Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital has provided care for count- less community members. In 2004 we are still working ex- tremely hard so that the resi- dents of west Durham receive the very best care at their local hospital. To day, the hospital des- perately needs to expand and the Rouge Valley Health Sys- tem Foundation, supported by many businesses, service clubs and individuals, has al- ready raised $12.1 million of the $13.7 million required to support a new $47-million ex- pansion. When Dr. Stas uses the media, instead of the Medical Staff Society channels that he himself is part of, to express his opinion he threatens this fundraising, the recruitment and retention of new physi- cians and nurses, and severely demoralizes the very staff he claims to defend. When he questions the cost of administration he misleads the general public, which may not be aware that Rouge Valley has cut $9 million in operating costs in the past 18 months by downsizing administration and implementing other ef- ficiencies. And when he calls the cur- rent emergency department a horrific environment he jeop- ardizes the health of all pa- tients as it may prompt them not to seek emergency care when they need it. The challenges in health care today are many, the so- lutions require our construc- tive input. Please get involved, get the facts and support your hospital. Dr. Fathi Abuzgaya Chief of staff Dr. Mansour Bendago President, Medical Staff Society Rouge Valley Health System Liberals are failing Pickering in key areas To the editor: The McGuinty government has five key priorities: Educa- tion, health, economy, strong communities, and democra- cy. On the latter four, the pre- mier has failed the people of Pickering. The logical exten- sion of a healthy Ontario is safe, clean drinking water, but in the provincial plan for the Seaton lands, the protection of groundwater-creek-cold streams-large woodlots-wet- lands from contamination is notably absent. The fact that the provincial plan will not have a high enough indus- trial-commercial-to-residen- tial tax-base ratio to be viable into the future, flies in the face of the economic rhetoric of ‘prosperity for people’. Democracy implies an ac- countable, responsible gov- ernment. The provincial gov- ernment presently in power is now dictating to the citizens of Pickering what will hap- pen in their own municipal- ity. Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan’s words of defiance to John MacKenzie of the Min- istry of Municipal Affairs and Housing reflect the difference between the reality of the ‘c hose change’ electioneering mantra, and the arrogance of being elected. The reality of this change is that the citizens of Pick- ering have had their right to local planning replaced by the Province’s own version of urban sprawl, which is being dictated by the provincial land swap deal. ONTARIO PRESS COUNCIL There’s no reason not to protect yourself and those around you this season I t’s that time of year again: when the birds head south, the trees change colour, the clocks go back an hour, goblins and ghouls invade our streets, and last but not least, we go en masse to get our yearly flu shots. While the first four rites of fall are old traditions that go back many generations, the flu shot is a fairly recent innovation. But it’s among the most important things you can do for yourself. And, it’s free of charge (though we do pay the cost of it through our tax dol- lars). The flu shot program became necessary when, half-a-dozen years ago, the government noticed the massive hit our economy and health care system took by those struck down by the flu. Our urgent care clinics and emergency wards were swamped by those suffering from the flu and absenteeism from the workplace cost the Ontario economy billions of dollars. The response was to spend a little to save a lot: an ounce of pre- vention for a pound of cure as it were. The flu-shot program is widely publicized and available for all those with a health card across Ontario. It can be accessed in a wide variety of ways: through an appointment with your physician, by going to one of many flu vaccination clinics near where you live or work or even by taking in a drive-through clinic at Bill Nurse Chevrolet Cadillac at 1530 Dundas St. E., in Whitby. Ye s, that’s right, you don’t even have to get out of your car to get protected from the flu if you show up at the Nurse dealership on Saturday, Oct.30. But if you want to take advantage of this offer, you must register at 905-723-8521 or 1-800-841-2729 ext. 2900 by Oct. 27. The flu shot is most critical for the extremely young and the el- derly. If you are under 12 (but over 6 months) and over 65, the flu shot is highly recommended. But all are encouraged to get it. Flu vaccine recently made headlines during the last presidential debate when the candidates talked about a shortage in the United States due to a bad batch of vaccine ordered from Britain, and said they were looking at bringing in flu vaccine from Canada. President George Bush said he would forego a flu shot in order to save vac- cine for others who might need it more. Unlike the President, we don’t have to go without. Make sure you get your flu shot today and don’t take unnecessary risks with your health. All the various curling leagues have returned to the Annandale ice for the start of the 2004-05 season. The club’s also gearing up for two major bon- spiels in early November. The ‘Freeze’, a new ladies’ day ‘spiel, goes Wednes- day, Nov. 10, and the annual Mixed Stakes Bonspiel again takes to the ice on the Nov. 12 weekend. The first of the Ontario Curling As- sociation zone Playdowns is only a month away. The Teranet Junior Women and Junior Men’s Zones are slated for the Port Perry Community Curling Club from Nov. 20 to 22. The Tim March Junior team, with Matt Pyne, Patrick Janssen, Tyler An- derson and coach Paul Bourque, will be one of the Annandale hopefuls. ••• The 2004 curling clinic is scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a novice and an ad- vanced section for adults. Cost is still only $11 and includes morning tea- coffee and a light lunch. Signup sheets are posted at the club. Susannah Moylan is again the head coach and she has assembled a crew of capable coaches to do the instruc- tion. ••• Bob Evans, a club member and a talented woodworker, undertook the task of gathering all the club’s pro- vincial championship banners into a group in the main entranceway. There are three doublerink Silver Tankard wins, one mixed win, and a men’s photo of the one Brier entry in 1979. ••• In the previous column, it was in- correctly noted the coaching clinic for Level 3 coaches was held in Oakville. It was actually conducted at the Glan- ford Curling Club where the curlers had their skills analyzed and improved by the coaches instructing the course. Alex Bianchi is the coach for the Kai- tlyn Leslie team, also consisting of Kayla Bianchi, Tracy O’Leary, and Lauren Hong, which participated. ‘Thank you for your positive support’: Felicien By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — Pickering citizens ex- tended their admiration and love to a trio of Olympians at a special cer- emony Friday night. And, Perdita Felicien, Anson Henry and Bernard Luttmer –– the city’s rep- resentatives at the Athens Olympics in August –– returned that love in kind. The Olympic heroes were piped into the Pickering Town Centre’s cen- tre court to the sound of the Scottish bagpipes, flanked by a Pickering Fire Department honour guard and City councillors, for the recognition eve- ning organized by the City of Pickering. Prior to entering the stage area, they waved to the throng of well-wishers who turned out to lend their support. The recognition night, said Mayor David Ryan, was “long overdue”, but due to the inherent difficulties of bring- ing three busy people together for one evening, had to be delayed until Fri- day. The mayor noted all three athletes had reached the pinnacle of their re- spective sports, and Pickering residents watched the progress of each of them as they ascended to the Olympics this year. “They’re our people. They grew up here and they represented us so well,” said Mayor Ryan before helping each Olympian slip on a Pickering jacket as a gift from the City. It’s not the first time Felicien has been recognized by the City for her accomplishments in track and field. Last September she was honoured after winning the 2003 World Track and Field Championship in the 100-metre hurdles in Paris in August. This time, she was equally gracious, sharing the stage with Olympic laser class sailor Luttmer and Henry, a sprinter who was a member of the Canadian men’s 4-x- 100m relay team. First and foremost, the three Olym- pians noted the support from their hometown shone like a beacon dur- ing their Olympic quest. For Felicien, that love and support was made more special following her ill-fated 100m hurdles final where, after hitting the first hurdle, she tumbled to the track, her second Olympic Games ending in disappointment. “Thank you for your positive support and positive words in spite of what happened in Athens,” said the 24-year- old, who received the loudest ovation of the night. “I’m proud to be from Pickering, and I’m not just saying it. You’ve been there since Day 1. I’m re- ally happy to be where I’m from. In four years, Bernard, Anson and I will work hard to give you the medal you deserve. I know you’re going to stay tuned to fol- low our progress. We’re going to bring something home –– I don’t know when or where but we’re going to bring it home.” She remembers receiving a flood of e-mails and letters following her bitter- sweet Olympic experience. But, a letter from a young Pickering girl, she recalls, was especially poignant. “It was from Rebecca Graham. It had a big flower on it and it said, ‘You are gold’. It made me cry. I was able to see through the misstep,” says Felicien. For Luttmer, growing up in Pickering and having the opportunity to learn to sail at Swan’s Marina and the French- man’s Bay Yacht Club was what stoked his love of sailing, eventually leading to his first Olympic experience in Athens. “I was born here and I spent a lot of time at this mall. I want to thank everyone for coming out this evening,” said Luttmer, who also acknowledged the support from his parents and from a number of local businesses that lent financial support over the years. “I urge people to get out on the water and enjoy the sport in Pickering. We have a long sailing tradition here.” Henry noted the Olympics brought into focus why he decided to become an elite sprinter and Olympian –– not for popularity, but rather for the inspi- ration it provides others. “I spoke to a lot of people who were excited that I went to the Olympics. They were living their dream through me,” said the 25-year-old, while also ac- knowledging the large role his parents played in his development. The floor was later opened up to an informal question-and-answer pe- riod. The Olympians were queried on a number of topics. One woman asked how they stay exceptionally nice. “We’re lucky, in the sports commu- nity everyone sticks together. That was very apparent at the Olympic village. There were 202 different countries and everyone was extremely friendly and happy to be there. Sports brings people together and it has done that for me and I hope it lasts forever,” offered Lutt- mer, at 23, the youngest member of Canada’s sailing team in Athens. When asked of their future plans, Felicien says she plans to come back stronger than ever for the 2008 Games in Beijing, China. “I look at what happened in Athens and it was a test of my character. I can’t wait for things to start flowing again. I want to show that I’m powerful and I know I can overcome this.” Since the Olympics, she’s been “tak- ing a break”, but will start training with coach Gary Winckler in the new year, with an eye toward defending her world outdoor title at the 2005 World Track and Championships in Helsinki, Finland in August. She also plans to compete in 2006 at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia. Henry is also on a training hiatus from coach Dan Pfaff at his training centre near Charlotte, North Carolina. He, too, plans to compete at the worlds in Helsinki, at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and in Beijing. Luttmer will forego his training this winter, but expects to be back in the laser boat next year when he will re- sume competing in his pursuit of a spot at the 2008 Games. [ Junior hockey ] Ajax Axemen can’t shed losing ways AJAX — The Ajax Axemen added two more games to their ever-expanding loss column. Last weekend’s slate of games represented two solid chances for the struggling Axemen to break through for a victory, playing two other sub-.500 OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League clubs in the Collingwood Blues (5-7-0-1, sixth in North Conference) and the Vaughan Vipers (5-7-0-1, seventh in South Conference). The Axemen, however, were left at the altar once again. On Friday night in Collingwood, the Axemen were blanked 2-0. On home ice at the Ajax Community Centre on Sunday, the Axemen fell 3-2 to the Vipers. The losses kept the Axemen’s string of futility thriving, as the club slipped further into the South Conference base- ment with a woeful 0-14-0-1 mark. In Sunday’s game, the Axemen and Vipers were tied at 2-2 in the third peri- od until Vaughan’s Vince Bruni beat Ajax goaltender Jason Brumwell for the game winner with a mere 2:06 remaining. Anthony Campoli and Mike Hanoun netted the Axemen goals, assisted by James Formosa and Devon Murphy. In Friday’s loss, the Axemen fired 35 shots at the Collingwood net, but were unable to beat Blues’ starter Keith Fink who earned the shutout. The Axemen face the Waxers at the Markham Centennial Centre on Friday night. They return to home ice to face the Huntsville-Muskoka Otters at the Ajax Community Centre on Sunday at 3 p.m. Julian Patchett COLLISION COURSE Ron Pietroniro / News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Pickering’s Ryan Faraone collides with a sliding Robert McKay from Clarington during an identification camp for under-11 boys at the Durham College soccer field in Oshawa on Friday. Panthers light up the scoreboard on weekend But only one win for Pickering juniors By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — A third of the way into the 2004-05 junior ‘A’ season, Pickering Panthers head coach John Winder is justifiably happy with the work of his rejuvenated squad. The Panthers (8-5-1-1 for 18 points) are currently in the middle of the pack, fifth, in the OHA Ontar- io Provincial Ju- nior ‘A’ Hockey L eague’s South Conference standings. The team has shown it can fill opposition nets at a high rate, as evidenced by Friday’s 8-2 romp over the visiting Vaughan Vipers at the Pickering Recreation Complex. But, the weekend play also exposed the Panthers’ Achilles heel at this point in the season, namely their inability to employ tight, defensive hockey when needed. Playing a run-and-gun style with the St. Michael’s Buzzers proved to be a no-win proposition, as the Panthers dropped a shootout, 7-5, to the first-place Buzzers at the complex Saturday night. “It’s good to see the boys break loose and score a lot of goals,” says Winder of Friday’s laugher. “We’ve been in a lot of tight games this year, so it’s good to see them break loose, while also keeping the goals against at a good level. It was one of those nights were the shots were not hitting the goalie but were hitting the mesh.” It was, however, the loss to St. Mike’s that showed the team needs to refocus on its defensive play during the next part of the season, says Winder. “If we want to beat the top teams in the league, we have to tighten up de- fensively,” he says. “We’ve been work- ing on other areas in practice, but we have to get back to defence.” To that end, the team has brought in former Ajax Axemen rearguard Mike Rapson. Winder says Rapson was on the trade block since the start of the season, with Axemen GM Larry La- Belle finally swinging a cash deal with Panthers’ GM Frank Robinson late last week. Rapson played in Friday’s win over Vaughan, but was purposefully kept off the ice in the loss to St. Mike’s, owing to his lack of game prepara- tion. “We don’t want to rush him,” says Winder. “He’s a great player and a great addition. He’s a 1984 birth date, so he brings a lot of experience to the blue line.” The acquisition of Rapson will add more depth to an already experienced blue-line corps that has captain Ryan Annesley, Michael Banwell, Danny Sullivan, John Soames, Kyle Roulston and rookie Kyle Vandebospoort. While defensive play may be prob- lematic at times at this juncture of the season, the goaltending has been rock-solid. The Panthers possess the best goaltending tandem in recent memory with the ‘Ryan and Bryan’ show, as both Ryan Daniels and Bryan Schermele being 1 and 1A on the depth chart. “A t this point in the year, both of them are number-one goalies,” ex- plains Winder. “A t this point last year we probably had two num- ber-two goalten- ders.” The goalkeep- ers have shared the workload thus far, with each getting into nine games apiece (includ- ing exhibition games). Schermele carries a slightly better goals-against average at 3.40, including a shutout, compared to his rookie mate’s 4.07 average. Although the Panthers lost both of their games thus far with the Buzzers, Pickering has been the lone team to score a combined 10 goals against the powerhouse St. Mike’s squad this year (Pickering lost 10-5 in Toronto Oct. 10). In Saturday’s game, the visitors led throughout, with Pickering get- ting as close as 4-3 at one point in the second period before St. Mike’s scored twice for a 6-3 lead after two. Pickering outscored the Buzzers 2-1 in the third to make it close. Jeff Birr scored twice for Pickering against St. Mike’s. Singles goals went to Vandebospoort, Cody Smith and Greg Riggs. In Friday’s win over Vaughan, the Panthers led 4-2 after two periods and then netted four unanswered goals in the third to seal their eighth win of the campaign. Rookie forward Joel Lenius record- ed a four-point night to pace the Pan- thers, with two goals and two assists. Other scorers were Riggs, Mark Cor- nacchia, Justin Fox, Birr, Roulston and call-up Mike McFarlane. The Panthers host the Newmarket Hurricanes (8-5-0-0), the first-place club in the North Conference, at the complex on Friday at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday night, Pickering’s on the road to Thornhill to play the Thunderbirds (6-6-0-0) at 7:30 p.m. PANTHERS’ POSTSCRIPT: Forward Richard Schofield continues to be week-to-week with post-concussion syndrome, but is making solid prog- ress toward a return, says Winder... The marathon runs throughout the day and the public is welcome to attend, espe- cially between 7 to 9 p.m. organizers say. Along with great music, enjoy a silent auction, raffles and a baked goods table. The school is located at 180 Church St. N., in Ajax. Glimpse of servants’ lives offered Oct. 30, 31 DURHAM – Life below stairs at Park- wood Estate will be explored in a spe- cial presentation Oct. 30 and 31. ‘S ecrets of the Cellar’ is a joint proj- ect of the Backwoods Players of Pick- ering Museum Village Parkwood and the former home of R.S. (Col. Sam) McLaughlin and his family. In a series of vignettes, actors por- tray the lives of McLaughlin’s servants on the eve of the annual Chrysanthe- mum Tea, a kick-off event to the Royal Winter Fair. The presentation was written using research about Parkwood, the McLaughlin family, staff and Oshawa of 1921, provided by Parkwood staff. References will be made to real people but the “serving staff” met along the way will be composites, with anec- dotes taken from local records and oral history. To urs go on the quarter hour start- ing at 10 a.m. both days. Tickets are $10. To reserve, call Parkwood at 904- 433-4311. Backwoods is back at historic Parkwood Durham’s young musicians perform in concert Nov. 6 ‘Control Room’ screening in support of library Cinefest Durham presents film Oct. 28 DURHAM – A documentary about Al-Jazeera, one of the most controver- sial and popular free network news sources in the Arab world, will be shown by Cinefest Durham on Oct. 28. ‘Control Room,’ by filmmaker Jehane Noujaim, gives audiences a glimpse into the rationale behind choices of the network, which is criticized by Pen- tagon officials for its pro-Iraqi bias and is condemned for airing civilian ca- sualties. The 2004 documentary, shot during the Iraq war, shows that truth is relative and no opinions should be reached without an examination of many points of view, according to Cinefest Durham. The film, in English with Arabic and English subtitles, will be shown at 7 p.m. at Famous Players in the Oshawa Centre. Tickets are $6 and available at Cinefest Durham’s box office which closes promptly at 7 p.m. Tickets can- not be purchased from Famous Play- ers. Proceeds go to the Oshawa Public Library system. Groen/ News Advertiser photo Two performances planned Nov. 10, 11 DURHAM – The famous Lipizzaner Stallions will make a stop in Oshawa on their 34th anniversary tour. The shows will be held Nov. 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Audito- rium, New music, choreography and rou- tines have been incorporated into the show, which contains an emphasis on the historical background and foun- dation of the Lipizzaner breed. The horses were originally bred and used as horses of war, then horses for nobil- ity and aristocracy and then became a living form of equestrian art. The show emulates the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, Austria. The performances will also include the famous ‘Airs Above the Ground,’ the spectacular leaps and other rou- tines, once used by riders to protect and defend themselves on the battle- field. The show, which winds up with the traditional, intricate Grand Quadrille, features 12 to 14 stallions. Tickets are $25 for adults, $23 for children 12 and younger and seniors 60 and above.
