People who live around the landfill site in Michigan raised concerns about Ontario trash being trucked in, prompting the state to enforce tough new regula- tions. “This is wonderful news,” Re- gional Chairman Roger Anderson said in a release. “We’ve always had agreements with our waste contractors for alternative... solu- tions, but this means no change in the foreseeable future.” The new standards, which come into effect Oct. 30, say garbage coming into Michigan cannot con- tain material such as medical and yard waste, tires, recyclables such as glass and pop cans. The rules only apply to Dur- ham’s residential waste, 200,000 tons of which has been shipped to Michigan since January. Indus- trial, commercial and institutional waste is not the responsibility of the Region, and is therefore col- lected and disposed of privately. Mr. Anderson encouraged resi- dents to be diligent about recy- cling all materials and keeping Calls Seaton proposal ‘irrelevant’ without City’s planning input By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer PICKERING – The frustration of City officials boiled over Wednes- day when Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan used a public meeting to cas- tigate a provincial employee over the planning for the Seaton area. Mayor Ryan said information on the land swap between the Prov- ince and developers hasn’t been forthcoming, leaving City politi- cians and staff in the dark. Pickering councillors and citi- zens were to be given the details of the land swap, but it hasn’t hap- pened. “Until we do and they know, ev- erything here is irrelevant,” Mayor Ryan stated before an audience of about 200 who came for an up- date on the Seaton proposal. The meeting was held at the Pickering Recreation Complex. The land swap involved about 1,300 acres in the north Picker- ing area called Seaton, for almost 1,100 acres in Richmond Hill. The previous provincial government started the land-swap process in an attempt to protect environ- mentally sensitive land on the Oak Ridges Moraine. Seaton is provincially-owned land that was expropriated in the early 1970s so a feeder commu- nity could be built to service the planned international airport in Pickering. Mayor Ryan said meetings with provincial officials “aren’t meet- ings, they’re dissertations. We won’t come to your meetings any longer and be a page turner. Pick- ering has reached the extent of its patience. We want answers.” www.blaisdale.com12 mths - grade 8 5 Campuses in Durham Call Head Office 905-509-5005 Blaisdale MONTESSORI School Best Private School As voted by Ajax/Pickering Readers’ Choice Awards Limited spaces available SUNROOMS • WINDOWS • DOORS 905-686-2445 WHY MOVE IMPROVE ? NEWS ADVERTISER Ajax and Pickering residents helped raise close to $500,000 for cancer research DURHAM — The 5th annual CIBC Run for the Cure in Durham Region was another “huge success.” The event, which raises money for the fight against breast cancer, took place Oct. 3 in Memorial Park in Osha- wa. More than 4,000 participants came out to walk or run a 1- or 5-kilometre route through the city’s downtown. More than $462,980 was raised locally as of Oct. 5, and the number continues to grow as more money continues to come in, Bonnie Fraser, co-director of the run said. “Statistically, we averaged approxi- mately $121 per participant, and To- ronto raised $123 per participant... so our numbers are very close to Toronto,” Ms. Fraser said. “I would just like to say a huge thank you to residents of Dur- ham for helping us to create a future without breast cancer.” Ms. Fraser said the run was held nationally in 33 cities across Canada, including three satellite locations. She said support from local sponsors was also tremendous. “Every time I went to a business lo- cally to ask if they would get involved in some way, it was always very positive,” she said. “I think what we’re finding is more and more people are becoming aware of people who are being touched by cancer, and more people within Durham realize that they can now par- ticipate in Durham versus going to To ronto. Our numbers have increased that way, plus we’ve done a lot of posi- tive marketing.” Ms. Fraser said the fact that it didn’t rain the day of the run added to mak- ing the event another huge success. “Five years ago, we had 1,100 par- ticipants and raised $135,000, and five years later we have more than tripled our numbers,” she said. Ms. Fraser said money raised from previous runs has gone to Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Sciences Centre for a new one day procedure to treat breast cancer, in which isotopes are placed within the breast itself for self-radiation. Last year, the CIBC Run for the Cure raised more than $17 million nation- ally for breast cancer research. More than 4,000 run to find a cure for breast cancer Docked 40 hours pay for ‘misguided’ attempt to support colleagues By Jeff Mitchell Staff Writer DURHAM — The former head of the Durham Regional Police Drug Enforce- ment Unit (DEU) has been docked 40 hours pay and issued a reprimand after pleading guilty to insubordination and discreditable conduct. Det. Tom Andrews, a 15-year vet- eran of the service, entered the pleas Wednesday. The pleas and penalty were part of a deal worked out between the police service and Det. Andrews and his lawyer, Bernie O’Brien. Both sides adhered to a pledge not to com- ment beyond releasing an agreed state- ment of facts that was read during a brief tribunal at police headquarters in Oshawa. Staff Inspector Brian Fazackerley told tribunal officer Greg Connelly that Det. Andrews had breached an order not to communicate with former mem- bers of his squad after an investigation into allegations of criminal activity was launched in February of 2003. He said Det. Andrews, who was moved to the major fraud unit after the allegations surfaced, made contact with three for- mer members of his unit as they waited at 17 Division in Oshawa to be inter- viewed by investigators in mid-April. The act of discreditable conduct oc- curred in the early morning hours after those interviews, when Det. Andrews followed and spoke to OPP investiga- tors as they drove to a nearby hotel at which they were staying, Staff Insp. Fazackerley said. Det. Andrews was ordered in writing by Deputy-Chief Chuck Mercier not to have any contact with DEU members. He said that, while Det. Andrew’s ac- tions were the result of concern for his colleagues, they were still in contraven- tion of an order from police brass. “Many were close personal friends from whom he was required to distance himself over an extended period of time and dur- ing a period of disruption and uncertainty for all concerned,” said Staff Insp. Fazackerley, reading from the agreed statement of facts. Soon after the events in April, Det. Andrews was charged with three counts of insubor- dination and one count of discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act. In accepting the guilty plea Wednes- day, the force withdrew two of the in- subordination charges. As head of the DEU from the fall of 2001 until he was removed in early 2003, he oversaw 273 investigations that resulted in 400 busts and 1,500 criminal charges, and the seizure of millions of dollars worth of drugs, he told Mr. Connelly. But a shadow was cast over the DEU and members in January of 2003, when a former member of the unit sent a let- ter to Chief Kevin McAlpine, alleging a variety of criminal activities, including excessive use of force and theft. The chief called in the OPP in Feb- ruary of 2003. That investigation con- cluded with an announcement in Au- gust that there would be no criminal charges laid. In making the announce- ment, Chief McAlpine said there was “n o reasonable prospect of a criminal conviction”. A internal Durham police task force continues to investigate possible Police Services Act breaches arising from the allegations. All of the DEU cops involved, includ- ing Det. Andrews, have moved on to other duties. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, OCTOBER 10, 2004 PAGE 3 A/P REMEMBER TO RECYCLE LAST YEAR’S PHONE BOOK IN YOUR BLUE BOX! Pickering council on Monday passed a motion that will explore all legal op- tions it can use against the Province to regain control over the land-use planning process. Mr. MacKenzie said “our full intent is to work with the City of Pickering and the Region of Durham,” adding the dispute with Pickering stems from the agricultural preserve, which the City wants to development but the Province doesn’t. “The minister has met with you and we want to continue to work with you,” Mr. MacKenzie stated, add- ing the planning team has shared information with City officials. The “1,278 acres in Seaton are subject to the study to- night. The 1,075 acres of land in Richmond Hill will become a park. It’s a de- tailed process. We want to be as transparent as possi- ble,” Mr. MacKenzie added. There have been about 20 meetings on the project and “we will continue to commit to that. We are clearly inter- ested in hearing from you,” he said. “Then give us back our planning rights,” Mayor Ryan stated. “We took on (former Premier) Bob Rae on dumps and he’s gone. We took on (former Premier) Mike Harris on damn near everything and he’s gone. We’re prepared to take you on.” Prior to the mayor and Mr. MacKenzie debating, John van Nostrand, the plan- ner leading the design for Seaton, said, “We’re halfway through our process. “After 32 years, there’s a very real sense this plan will come into reality,” he stated. “Likely in light of the recent land exchange, develop- ment will be in the short term. “The airport is back on the table. It won’t be an international airport, but a regional airport,” he said, adding an airport could be operational by 2012. If you have kids you know that introducing them to new things can be fun, challenging, exciting, frustrating and most of the times rewarding. Back when I was a kid, we grew up almost expecting to have cavities when we went to the dentist. Having the doctor pry, poke and drill for an hour or so was normal. However, that’s not the case anymore. Today, in our society there are many benefits our children enjoy. For example, one of the great benefits is that kids today are growing up with fluoride in the water. People are becoming more aware of hygiene, parents are becoming more aware that they need to bring their kids to the dentist regularly. Here are some quick simple tips that can help your child grow up with healthy teeth and prevent future dental problems. 1.Begin cleaning your baby’s mouth with a clean gauze pad the first week the child is brought home from the hospital. Although most babies don’t have any teeth until about six months, a daily cleaning in infancy will get your child accustomed to the process. 2. By starting early, your baby is more likely to accept your cleaning their teeth later, when it ’s necessary to prevent tooth decay. Incorporate a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste into the routine by the time the child reaches 18 months or at the time their first molars come in. 3. Your child’s first visit to the dentist should be by the age of three, Although baby teeth will eventually fall out, they are very important to your child’s dental development. That is because the muscles of their mouth and jaw form around the foundation laid by their first set of teeth. 4. Make sure your child gets the benefits of the latest cavity prevention, including fluorides and sealants. Have your dentist apply a sealant to protect the biting surfaces of the molars. These are generally applied when the six- year molars come in. 5. Do not give your child a bottle at night with juice or milk. If your child must have a bottle at bedtime, consider just water or use a pacifier. If a pacifier is used don’t dip it in any sweetener. This is the finding of a new survey published in Insight on Cancer - news and information on nutrition and cancer prevention. The publication is a collaborative effort between the Canadian Cancer Society and Cancer Care Ontario. The survey included over 3,000 participants, aged 18 to 64 from all parts of the province. It provides a comprehensive picture of vegetable and fruit consumption, physical activity and body weight levels among Ontario adults. This is the first time in 10 years that a survey of this type has been conducted. “This information will not only help individuals make decisions about their health to reduce their risk of cancer, but also helps us to build support for policies that will lead to healthier communities,” s ays Penny E.Thomsen, CEO,Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division. Scouts Canada’s White Pine Council held a Beaveree in Peterborough’s Bev- earmead Park to celebrate 30 years since the Beaver program began in Canada. Now true, a hard rain washed much of the day away (does Peterborough ever get a break?), but it certainly didn’t wash away the spirit of the event. Looking around at the young faces from Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa, Port Perry -- pretty much all of Durham Region was represented and many more com- munities as well -- was truly a sight to behold. The day’s theme was ‘In search of the pearl,’ and many of the five- to seven-year-olds were dressed as pirates. In search of the pearl could just as easily have been a clever cover for the search for a solid foundation, as in, develop- ing solid values in our children. That’s as elusive at times as finding a perfect pearl. It’s impressive to watch the program unfold on any given week or at an event such as this. The leaders (can we ever thank volunteers enough?) instil impor- tant messages in our youth that will help them stand apart in years to come. Shar- ing, responsibility and respect are all interspersed with interactive programs that get young minds thinking. The Beaver program, and to be more correct, the entire Scouting and Guiding movements, offer more in those regards than imaginable. As they grow, more les- sons are learned in terms of community, survival and other life skills. Scouting or Guiding, team sports, school clubs, and so many other ex- tracurricular activities provide such an important boost to a young boy’s or girl’s life. Let’s face it, parents can do plenty, but that extra bit of support and the feel- ing of belonging to a group with other like-minded individuals is exactly what many kids need. It gives them a sense of purpose, of working together to achieve a common goal, while triumphing over the bumps and troubles that life inevita- bly throws at them. In the coming weekends, depend- ing on where you live in Durham, local Scouting troops will be at stores, in neighbourhoods and at other key loca- tions across our communities. It’s the organization’s annual apple day. Yo u’ll be offered a shiny apple in exchange for a cash donation of your choosing. It’s a great cause that serves to boost programs while also working on a youngster’s people skills. Stop for a moment and learn about Scouting first-hand. You’ll be glad you did. The City is talking to its lawyer to find a way to win back its planning rights from the Government of Ontario over the Seaton land swap. Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner brought the plan to the table this week and the rest of council was unanimously behind the move. Councillors have asked for their legal options in returning control over land-use planning to Pickering, along with a cost analysis of hiring an environmental lawyer to upgrade the class environmental assessment of Seaton to a full individual EA. They also want City staff to prepare a fiscal impact assess- ment of the Province’s development plans for Seaton. Currently, the Province is using the Ontario Planning and Development Act to proceed, leaving no right of appeal to the City. That has made for a strained relationship with the Province and strong words from council members. Coun. Brenner calls it circumventing democracy and Mayor Dave Ryan says the City isn’t being treated fairly. He adds Pickering can’t be the Province’s “whipping boy”. Going the legal route would be a costly, uncertain process, with no guarantees. But when all other options have failed, the City has no other avenue to fight for its rights. It’s an un- fortunate course of action, one the City clearly sees as a last option, but legal action may be the only way for Pickering to regain control over an issue that should never have been circumvented in the first place. Pickering has the best knowledge of its land use and should be the one to control planning within its borders. The issue has only been exacerbated by poor communica- tion between the Province and Pickering. In an unfortunate turn of events last week, when information was being re- leased about the Seaton land swap, Pickering was the last to know. Instead of briefing the mayor, an appropriate course of action, the regional chairman was told. He in turn did not contact Mayor Ryan or other Pickering councillors. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com One law for all To the editor: Recently I sent a letter to Premier Dalton McGuinty, tell- ing him of my concerns about allowing the Shariah law to come into effect, involving the Islamic community. I pleaded with him to repeal this act. The failure to do so will start us on a long and dangerous slope, in a province with so many diverse cultures. In a letter I reminded him that we know he took over his position with high deficiencies in some depart- ments, and that his job is not easy. He has many serious de- cisions to make. So I asked him to take seriously the decision to not allow the Shariah law. There should be one law for all, at all levels, no matter the social status, wealth or religion. The religious cultures are dealt with by priests, pastors and rabbis, counselling their own. I also begged him to keep our Canada free, with one law for all. Agnes Leitch Uxbridge If you or someone you care about requires dentures, or if you wear dentures and are experiencing problems, you should see a denturist for help. Denturists study the clinical and technical aspects of removable dentures and general health for a period of three years, longer than any other health- care practitioner. The College of Denturists of Ontario acknowledges that denturists are “Denture Specialists”. Anyone can consult a denturist without a referral from another health-care professional. Denturists provide the most cost and time effective denture treatment. Most denturists’ laboratory work is performed on the premises by the denturist who sees you. This ensures the quality of care is consistent and personal. Your denturist is able to provide you with the professional advice needed prior to choosing the denture that best suits your lifestyle. The importance of a thorough consultation and examination with your denturist prior to any treatment cannot be emphasized enough. This appointment gives you the opportunity to express your concerns and desires for your new dentures. It also allows the denturist the opportunity to assess the oral conditions present and address your needs and expectations. A denturist can restore an existing broken or cracked denture to its original state. Repairs may be required when breakage or chipping occurs, when one or more teeth need to be added to an existing denture (due to tooth extraction), or because of wear and tear. Most repairs can easily be done in one day. If your denture requires a repair, it may be indicative of underlying problems, including age of the denture, worn teeth, or poor fit. Your denturist is the professional who can best explain how to prevent denture breakage from occurring. If your dentures are more than five years old, make an appointment to talk with your denturist. You can improve your looks, self-confidence and possibly y our health with quality replacement dentures. Courtesy of The Deegan Denture Clinic, family operated for 25 years. Many people don’t have bowel movements for days and sometimes a week. The more compromised digestion, the more symptoms will prevail. It is not as simple as in one end and out the other. Digestion is a series of chemical breakdowns. Proteins break down into amino acids, carbohydrates break down into glucose (when properly absorbed into the body) and fats break down into fatty acids. When digestion is compromised, symptoms occur. People today feast on chips, crackers, bagels, pretzels, cakes, muffins and granola bars. Whole foods such as fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and free-range roasted poultry and legumes just compete with the taste of refined foods that are laden with salt and sugar. A diet high in refined foods provides no fiber and too much sugar. This is what begins the vicious cycle: 1. Constipation or sluggish digestion occurs. 2. Nutrients don’t get absorbed. 3. Immune system plummets. 4. Bacterial infections manifest. 5. Antibiotics are prescribed. 6. Good bacteria are wiped out. 7. Bad bacteria multiply. 8. New infection sets in and more antibiotics are required. When bacteria levels are high, food cravings go out of control. If this sounds all too familiar, food sensitivity testing can help! The individual sensitivity report scales the skin measurement readings into: 1. foods to be avoided; 2. foods that need to be consumed in moderation; 3. foods that are satisfactory; 4. foods that are beneficial. If further assistance is needed for more problematic health challenges, a nutritional consultation on intestinal and digestive health is highly recommended and affordable! If you experience unwanted symptoms, begin by understanding your sensitivity and believe that wellness is within your reach. Karen Steward offers allergy testing and nutritional consulting. This is a non-surgical treatment. Women between the ages of 18-50 may qualify to participate. This study has been approved by Health Canada as well as a central ethics board. How would you solve the concerns of the resi- dents regarding the pro- posed nuclear alerting sys- tem? A. The proposed system has already been bought and paid for, without the input of residential stakeholders. I would impress upon those involved to seek out newer technology, which may prove to be less intrusive. However, if this archaic sys- tem is the only alternative, I will investigate whether compensation would be in order if residents experience decreased property values. The people who live in the alerting area have lived here for many years. We did not invest in Pickering because of the possibility of having a siren in our neighbour- hoods. We invested in the virtues currently existing in our community. Q. What is the single most important issue facing Ward 2? A. I believe most concerns stem from traditional urban planning in our neighbour- hoods. The results are traffic conges- tion, lack of tran- sit, higher costs for public services and taxes. The Province’s recent Golden Horseshoe Growth Plan identifies Pick- ering as an Emerging Urban Centre. The community needs to examine our city and decide where best to redevelop and build new. Give mixed land use the priority to establish pedes- trian friendly communities, as most residents need to drive everywhere. Replace parking lots with a vibrant, active, economic area downtown and work towards a more livable city with benefits for its residents in the future. Q. Why should Wa rd 2 residents vote for you? A. I think people are tired of the same old stereotyped politician. I can add a much needed fresh perspective. I will work in the best interest of the community, and I’m com- mitted to remaining as Ward 2’s City councillor for the long haul. I have remained true to my commitment made in 2003 for safer streets and parks, smart growth management, encouraging alternative transportation on our streets, ensuring our waterfront remains publicly accessible, developing our business core, and showing fiscal responsibility with our tax dollars. I am a much- needed new-age politician who believes a promise made, is a promise kept. FREE CONSULTATIONS If you already know that you should eat less and exercise more, but for whatever reason you are not doing it, then Hypnosis for Weight Loss is the program for you. The solution to your weight problem is not to learn more about foods you can’t eat, or better exercise routines. The real solution to your weight challenges rests in your unconscious mind and that means HYPNOSIS. To be successful with your weight loss efforts, you need to get your unconscious mind to help you achieve your desired results and not to consistently sabotage your efforts. Hypnosis is the most effective tool available to help you. Your unconscious mind already plays a critical role in all aspects of your life. It is in your unconscious mind where you hold the image of how you perceive yourself. It is where all your habits, emotions, creativity, long- term memory and survival instincts are stored. Your unconscious mind also controls all your bodily functions like your appetite and metabolism. Therefore, it makes sense to use the powers of your unconscious mind in your weight reduction program. Hypnosis will allow you to be more in touch with your emotions, imagination, intuition and senses. It is through the use of hypnosis that you have your best chance of achieving your weight loss objectives. If you have ever said to yourself “if only there was a way to make it easy for me to follow a diet or to follow through on an exercise program” then you owe it to yourself to take the Hypnosis for Weight Loss program.Taking action now will allow you to say, “I am so glad I took Hypnosis for Weight Loss. I just wish I had taken Hypnosis for Weight Loss years ago.” The next Hypnosis for Weight Loss program starts in Ajax October 25. Hawaii is synonymous with beaches and relaxation, of course, but it also has a considerable cultural scene. In an effort to draw more attention to that side of Hawaiian life, the Hawaii Tourism Authority has created the Hawaii Arts Season, running from the end of February to the middle of May. More that 100 shows, events and openings are gathered under its banner, everything from performances by internationally known stars such as flutist James Galway to the Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long celebration of hula and other native Hawaiian arts. While most of the islands have made contributions, the bulk of the events are on Oahu, in and around Honolulu. If you make just one cultural stop H a w a i i ...H a w a i i ...Hawaii... Beyond the Beach while on Oahu, pick the Honolulu Academy of Arts. This underrated museum has recently has a $32-million facelift. Atoms’ win streak stopped by Stamps DURHAM — The Ajax-Pickering Dolphins Football Club’s peewees remain the lone undefeated squad after games against the Burling- ton Stampeders at Nelson Park last Sunday. The peewees stormed back in the second half to secure a 27- 12 victory and keep their perfect record intact at 8-0. The atoms (7-1), however, fell to the Stamps 16-11. Meanwhile, the tykes (5-2- 1) blanked Burlington 12-0. All three Dolphins teams travel to Oshawa for a Thanksgiving Day clash with the Hawkeyes on Mon- day at the civic fields. All eyes will be on the peewee game (1:30 p.m.) as Ajax-Pickering and Oshawa enter the game undefeated. In last Sunday’s game, the pee- wees trailed Burlington 13-11 at halftime, forcing Ajax-Pickering to make some adjustments. The Dolphins were fired up in the third quarter, taking the open- ing kickoff and then marching in for a touchdown with a dominat- ing seven-minute drive culminat- ed in an eight-yard end zone run by fullback Andrew Quittenton. On their next possession, the offence once again dominated the line of scrimmage and drove the ball downfield with author- ity, scoring on running back David Delgado’s two-yard touchdown run. The Dolphins’ defence marked the second half with hard-hitting, smart football. The linebacking crew of Ryan Phillips, Thomas Rao, Brett Jamieson, Sean Carter and Jordan Nguyen was relent- less in their pursuit and coverage. The defensive secondary, led by Michael Portener, Haneef Smith, Andre Shand and David McIl- ravey, was unyielding. Defensive ends Peter Iyamu and Jamal Wat- son created havoc in the Stamped- ers’ backfield. The Dolphins opened the scor- ing in this contest behind great of- fensive line play by Greg Shereme- ta, Alexander Ko and David West, enabling Delgado to churn up big yardage. Quittenton capped the series with a touchdown. The Stampeders scored their first-half points on a touchdown, a safety and a field goal. Dolphins’ place-kicker Jordan McLaugh- lin connected on a 31-yard field goal with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter. Special teams players Mitchell Whyte and Clayton Robichaud provided key blocks to allow kick returners Kyle Goffe and Delgado the opportunity to give the club excellent field position. Quarterback Tosh Miller Francis played the first half; Andrew Lim played the entire second half. In the atom game, the Dolphins offence was unable to convert in the red zone, despite moving the ball throughout the contest. Running back Dillon ‘Little Earl’ Campbell rushed for a 25-yard touchdown. Delino Smith nailed a 25-yard field goal. Smith also added a fake punt to his reper- toire in the contest. Running backs Tyler Grayer, Kareem Tucker and Cole Tudor ran the ball well. Linebackers Rob Sinclair, Adri- an Williamson, Greg Farrell and Shane Lock continued their pen- chant for big tackles. The front line of Brandon Misseri, Dexter Dam- boise, Jonah Wynter, and Jordan ‘Tank’ Ali also put in a fine effort. In the tyke contest, the Dolphins’ kickoff team set the tone when it recovered the opening kick at the Stamps’ 50-yard line. The offence, led by quarterback Michael Sto- bbart, amassed a mammoth 353 yards, its best performance yet. Running back Omar Smith and fullback Jackson Harding scored touchdowns in the first and third quarters, respectively. Harding also provided blocking for Smith on his touchdown run. Offensive linemen Rae Grant, Jaylan Guth- rie, Kevin Dubra, Cameron Reid, Kevin Rose and Tyler Leclair ex- ecuted their best blocking perfor- mance of the season. The defence allowed the Stamps a measly 85 yards of offence. It was a big day for the defensive second- ary as cornerback Denver Wright was in on 11 tackles and linebacker Alex Horodnyk had seven. Defen- sive ends Rae Grant and Dondre Wright were in on seven and five tackles, respectively. Smith was the offensive game star, piling up 268 yards rushing. Alex Horodnyk was the defensive star, playing his best game of the season. Dolphins peewees roll up eighth football win of season Tr o jans post net gains in volleyball Pickering High s enior, junior boys’ squads defeat Uxbridge, Ajax AJAX — The Pickering High School Trojans boys’ volleyball team made a clean sweep of the competition in Durham Region league action at the school on We dnesday afternoon. The Trojans’ seniors, on court against the Ajax High School Rams and the Uxbridge Secondary School Tigers, won both matches. Pickering High defeated Uxbridge 2-0 (25-14, 25-11) and also swept Ajax High 2-0 (27-25, 26-24). The PHS senior squad, says coach Scott Burrows, is one of five teams that could potentially advance to the league final. He lumped in Sinclair and Anderson of Whitby, Dunbarton of Pickering and Eastdale of Oshawa as teams that could challenge for the Dur- ham Region title. “It’s anybody’s game,” says Bur- rows. “It’s whoever’s playing the best at the end when it really mat- ters.” Burrows says this year’s edition of the Trojans is deep, with 11 players on the roster, with a good mix of new and returning players. The core returning seniors are Mike Rocca, James Russea and Andrew Bergman. The Trojans also have several first-year seniors who’ve moved up and have con- tributed in a major way. “They’re doing a good job, they’re athletic and they’re cer- tainly rounding us into a solid squad,” he says. Meanwhile, the PHS juniors also emerged with a 2-0 mark after games against Ajax High and Ux- bridge. The Trojans defeated Ux- bridge 2-1 (17-25, 25-20, 15-8) and Ajax 2-0 (25-10, 25-16). The PHS juniors are one of sev- eral teams that have a shot at the regional title. Burrows, who also coaches the junior team, says Sinclair, Ander- son, Dunbarton, Eastdale and McLaughlin are expected to be strong this season. This year’s PHS junior team, says Burrows, is inexperienced, but ex- tremely athletic. They’ll have to maintain their disciplined play and must continue to control the ball effectively over the remainder of the season in order to be suc- cessful. WindReach is dedicated to giving a farm experience to people with disabilities. Individuals of all ages come from across Durham to the unique setup, just east of Lakeridge Road, near the Uxbridge and Pickering townline. Sandy Mitchell’s own story one worth repeating By Paul Futhey Staff Writer DURHAM — It’s a sunny Oc- tober afternoon at WindReach Fa rm — a fantastic day to be outdoors. Sandy Mitchell, the founder of WindReach, is sitting in the lounge of the recently-con- structed Cedar Lynde Stables. He is wearing sunglasses and occasionally glances out the window that offers a view to the north. Hamish, a bearded collie nearing his first birthday, faith- fully accompanies him and lies at the man’s feet. Mitchell is 60. At a young age, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a condition which affects his mobility and his speech. This condition has gained ab- solutely nothing, however, in dampening a positive outlook or forcing any kind of ceiling or limitation on achievement. An accomplished outdoors- man, Mitchell has recently re- turned from Athens, where he competed in his second Para- lympic Games in equestrian. “I loved the atmosphere, the camaraderie within the com- petition,” says Mitchell, ac- knowledging there were both positive and negative elements to the experience. He had also competed in the Sydney Games four years earlier and more recently in the 2003 dressage world championships for dis- abled riders in Belgium. It has been a longtime pas- sion. “I rode off and on all of my life,” he says. “I really got keen because I realized I love com- peting. I’m a competitor.” And then there’s WindReach Fa rm, a facility dedicated to giving opportunities to people of all ages with disabilities to enjoy outdoor pursuits. The 109-acre property straddles the border between the rural north of Whitby and the Township of Scugog. There are trails, a pet- ting zoo, gardens, an orchard, a children’s centre, a sensory room and overnight accommo- dations. Cedar Lynde Stables, a recent addition to the overall facility, will have been open for two years next May. It is fully accessible to both elite eques- trian riders and those with spe- cial needs. Asked what gives him the greatest satisfaction, Mitchell smiles upon hearing the ques- tion and removes his glasses. “Seeing the visitors partici- pating,” he says. “Smiling and enjoying everything — laugh- ing. It gives me a warm, warm feeling. You know what I mean?” One such tale concerned a man who came to WindReach as part of a group visit. “He went over and stood by the donkey and talked to it, communicated with it,” Mitch- ell says. “Nobody had ever heard him speak — ever. “I smile every time I tell it.” WindReach, which Mitchell purchased in 1985, opened its doors in 1989 and achieved charitable status in 1992. In any given year, more than 20,000 visitors will pass through the gates. A smaller, though similar, facility is established in Bermu- da, WindReach Recreational Village. While he competed in the Paralympics under the Ber- mudian flag and has a home in Bermuda, Mitchell intends to take up full-time residence in Canada. He has remarried, recently celebrating his first anniversary with his Canadian wife, Sally. As for the numerous obsta- cles he himself has overcome, Mitchell lists the chief one coming when, as a 22-year-old, he broke away from an over- protective home, proving he could live on his own. “In those 38 years I have achieved a lot,” he says. “I’ve persevered over many stum- bling blocks.” Now, he helps others do the same. “I’ll hear from people their son or daughter or father or mother came here and they got so much out of it,” he says. “I hear it every day.
