Judge asks jury
for patience after
yet more delays
By Jeff Mitchell
Staff Writer
DURHAM - The long-running mur-
der trial of Cosmo Jacobson and Sean
Hall has once again been bogged down
in procedural issues.
Tuesday, Superior Court Justice
Donald Ferguson apologized to the
jury for the delays, which saw them
excluded from the courtroom for a
total of three days while lawyers for the
defendants and Crown argued points
of law.
The jury was expected to be recalled
Tuesday afternoon and for an abbrevi-
ated day today before being excused
Thursday for the Rosh Hashanah holi-
day.
“I have no doubt you are very frus-
trated with this process,” the judge
told the eight men and four women
who’ve been hearing evidence since
mid-April.
“I think those feelings are fully justi-
fied.”
But the complex nature of the trial,
which has two young men accused
of the murder in February, 2001, of
Ajax resident Roy Jones, means such
delays are inevitable, the judge said.
Six lawyers — two for each defendant
and two representing the Crown — are
involved in the trial.
The fact that both Mr. Jacobson and
Mr. Hall, long-time friends from Pick-
ering, have implicated each other as
the man who fired the fatal shots has
further complicated the trial.
Before jurors were excused for a
six-week break in July, they expressed
frustration with the changing time
frame with which they had to cope.
The judge attempted to mollify them
then, promising to proceed as expedi-

PICKERING – Their differences re-
main, but the provincial government
is going to work with the City of Picker-
ing to plan development in Seaton.
Ministry of Municipal Affairs rep-
resentatives and the consulting firm
doing the planning for Seaton met re-
cently with staff from the City, the
Region of Durham, and the public and
Catholic school boards to discuss the
plans for the provincially owned land.
“It was an opportunity for us and our
consultants to bring staff from differ-
ent departments (with the Region and
City) up to speed on our plan,” said
Bryan Kozman, director of the North
Pickering Land Exchange Team.
Mayor Dave Ryan was pleased with
the outcome.
“The Province has committed to
having Pickering participate as a full
partner in the planning process with
Seaton,” he said.
That is something the City has want-
ed for a while, especially given all the
work invested in its growth manage-
ment study for the area.
“We’re very pleased about (being
a full partner). It is something that,
myself and council, we’ve been con-
sistent in our assertion that the growth
management study is based on sound
science, good planning and takes into
consideration preserving the environ-

Wa rd 2 byelection

PICKERING – The City of Pickering
wants Ward 2 residents to mark Nov. 8
in their calendar.
That’s the day those residents go to
the polls to choose a new city council-
lor - and they have plenty of choices.
Despite the strong race, council
and staff are still concerned about the
historically low turnout of municipal
elections - about 30 per cent - which
drops even further when it comes to
byelections.
Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick
Johnson said he was involved in a
byelection in 1987 that saw only 18-per
cent voter turnout.
“Do you think you’re going to be
able to get out as many (voters) as a
regular election?” Coun. Johnson in-
quired of deputy clerk Anne Green-
tree at Monday’s management forum
meeting.
“I don’t anticipate we’ll have the
same turnout as we do in a regularly
scheduled municipal election,” Ms.
Greentree said.
At the special meeting in August
when the byelection was announced,
council instructed staff to investigate
alternative voting options that could
help increase voter turnout.
“We’ve concluded that investigation
and have determined that given the
reduced time frame that we have to
plan the election and the limited re-
sources available we are going to con-
tinue using the paper voting method,”
Ms. Greentree said. She added staff is

United Way launches 2004 fund-raising campaign
Agency seeks help
to do a world of good
in the community
DURHAM – The Ajax-Pickering-Ux-
bridge United Way kicks off its 2004
fund-raising campaign this weekend.
The fund-raising goal will be an-
nounced at the kick-off on Saturday,
Sept. 18 in the centre court of the Pick-
ering Town Centre from noon to 3 p.m.
The theme this year is ‘United Way...
Doing a World of Good in Our Com-
munity’.
The campaign chairman is Pat
O’Brien, former public affairs manager
at the Pickering nuclear station, while
Rolf Ott of Uxbridge is co-chairman.
A variety of acts will perform dur-
ing the kick-off ceremonies, includ-
ing the Ethnocats singers from Ajax
High School, the Home Town Cloggers,
dancers from the Durham Tamil Asso-
ciation and the Hummingbird Dancers
from Club Carib.
United Way executive director Edna
Klazek says, “We’re extremely pleased
that so many local talents are coming
out to share in our campaign kick off.
Since our main focus is community,
what a better way to kick off then to
acknowledge our homegrown talent.”
The organization will have an infor-
mation booth at the mall, describing
the services and agencies the United
Way supports. Also at the booth, there
will be United Way temporary tattoos,
cake, and face painting by Girls Incor-
porated.

Fall Festival features
fun for everyone
By Danielle Milley
Staff Writer
PICKERING – Residents of the
tiny hamlet of Greenwood invite
everyone to their big celebration.
The Greenwood Fall Festival is
Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Green-
wood Community Centre from
noon until the early evening.
The annual event is a fund-
raiser for the community’s youth
and children’s programs and of-
fers something for everyone, says
organizer Chantal Bigras.
“We have games for kids, ar-
cades for youth, we have craft
tables and a barbecue all day,”
she said.
The craft marketplace has qua-
drupled this year, with 20 vendors
selling unique creations. Other
attractions include a clown who
does a magic show, temporary
tattoos and a reptile show.
“It’s a family day of festivities
that are for children or adults,”
Ms. Bigras said. “It’s for all ages.”
The event has grown every year
with it usually drawing nearly
1,000 people.
“It has doubled since the be-
ginning. Every year there are a
few hundred more people com-
ing,” Ms. Bigras said.
Although the event does attract
people from other communities,
it mostly helps to bring the resi-
dents of Greenwood together.
“We’re a very close-knit com-
munity,” Ms. Bigras said. “We
just want to keep the community
going and to introduce our chil-
dren to one other. It’s to keep that
togetherness.”
The event is organized by com-
munity volunteers.
To close out the evening the
popular gourmet barbecue re-
turns (hamburgers and hotdogs
are available the rest of the day).
Tickets are $12 and should be
purchased in advance as they are
first come, first served. For tick-
ets, call Nicole Hale at 905-686-
1732 or Annette Ainsbury at 905-
683-9261. High school students
interested in community service
hours can contact Ms. Hale.

DURHAM – With Ontario Attorney
General Michael Bryant announcing
two weeks ago that he is considering
a provincewide ban on pit bulls, a
regional politician said he is ready to
begin a regionwide campaign of his
own in support of the idea.
“I’m bringing a resolution forward
that the Municipality of Clarington in-
vestigate banning pit bulls in munici-
palities, and liaise with lower tier mu-
nicipalities in Durham so we can be on
the same page with respect to having
a bylaw,” Clarington Mayor John Mut-
ton.
He added Clarington will be re-
searching how areas such as Kitch-
ener-Waterloo have pulled off the ban
and how they dealt with issues such as
cross breeds.
“If one (municipality) moves for-
ward, it would be extremely beneficial
if we all moved forward,” said Mayor
Mutton.
The Attorney General’s comments
came after an attack on a Toronto man
by two pit bulls. The man had been
walking them for a friend when the
animals turned on him. Police were
forced to shoot the dogs to stop the
attack.
While pit bulls have a reputation
for aggressive behaviour, Ruby Rich-
ards, manager of the Humane Society
of Durham Region, said she believes
banning any breed of dog is wrong.
“First of all, how do you define what
a pit bull is? It is not recognized by
the Canadian Kennel Association as
a breed, so do you ban all dogs with a
muscular build?”
Ms. Richards said nobody at the
Humane Society of Durham has ever
been bitten by a
pit bull, though
a few have felt
the sharp teeth
of Jack Russell
Te rriers. She
blames the ag-
gressive nature
of some pit bulls
on backyard
breeders and
owners who are
looking for a sta-
tus symbol rather than a pet, and said
most owners are young men looking
for a dog that has a reputation for
being vicious.
“Half the reason people have this
type of dog is to make money,” said Ms.
Richards. “They can buy them cheap
from friends who are breeding (the
dogs) and then they turn around and
do the same thing. We had one lady
tell us she was picking up a four-week-
old pit bull puppy. You can’t do that.
They haven’t been properly socialized
with other puppies from their own lit-
ter. They require time to become social
animals.”
But it’s that kind of irresponsible
approach, she said, that is rampant
among many pit bull owners. She
said each breed of dog is different and
some, such as pit bulls, require more
attention than others to create a loving
pet. Pit bulls are strong, energetic and
rough and because of that are not the
best breed to have around small chil-
dren.
“And this is what happens. You have
someone who doesn’t do the research
and takes on a dog that requires time
they don’t have to offer, and then
they wonder why the animal turns on
them.”
Ms. Richards said she has seen pit
bulls from the homes of experienced
dog owners, and those dogs are loving
pets. Yet on any given morning there
could be a dozen pit bulls tethered
outside her office for a place in the
shelter with only six spaces available.
“I don’t think there’s a shelter out
there that wouldn’t agree that the gov-
ernment should focus on legislation
that would force owners to spay or
neuter their pets, and to subsidize the
operation for certain breeds if they
want to keep the numbers of a particu-
lar type under control,” she said.

tiously as possible when the
trial resumed in September.
The trial resumed Sept. 7,
with Mr. Jacobson taking the
stand in his own defence. He
held the courtroom spell-
bound for two days with his
account of the slaying, until a
dispute saw the jury excluded.
They were to be recalled
Tuesday afternoon, when Mr.
Hall’s lawyer, Paul Burstein,
was to begin cross-examining
Mr. Jacobson.
going to continue to investigate
alternate methods of voting for
the 2006 regular election.
Staff have also investigated
ways to heighten awareness
about the byelection.
“Experience tells us byelec-
tion turnout is less than a regu-
lar election and we’re going to
do whatever we can to make
the public aware,” Mayor Dave
Ryan said.
The City is going to do a
mailing to Ward 2 residents to
increase awareness and it is
also looking into doing a voice-
mail broadcast (an auto dial to
residents in Ward 2).
Coun. Johnson expressed the
importance of the local level of
government.
“What people don’t under-
stand is that municipal elec-
tions are one of the most im-
portant things of their lives,” he
said. “What affects them mu-
nicipally is minute by minute.
If your lights don’t stay on or
if your garbage isn’t picked up
and your sidewalks aren’t clear
it’s something we’re respon-
sible for.”
When the time comes, Ward
2 residents can vote on election
day or at two advance polls: the
first is Saturday, Oct. 30 and the
second is Wednesday, Nov. 3,
both take place at the Pickering
Civic Complex from 10 a.m. to 8

serves full consideration by the
Province and after our meeting
I’m confident that the report
will be.”
Mr. Kozman said the Prov-
ince’s planning team has taken
into consideration the City’s
study.
“Our consultants from the
beginning of their work have
studied, viewed and included
elements from the City’s growth
management study,” he said.
Mr. Kozman added the City
is more than just another stake-
holder in the process.
“We want to have a very
strong relationship with the
City and the Region...We very
much want to develop the plan
in concert with the City,” he
said.
Despite the new relationship,
an area of disagreement still
remains between the City and
the Province when it comes to
north Pickering.
“The question of the ag pre-
serve remains unanswered,”
Mayor Ryan said.
In the City’s growth manage-
ment study the southern part of
the Duffins Rouge Agricultural
Preserve would be developed to
accommodate 37,900 residents
in the Cherrywood neighbour-
hood, while 39,000 are to live
in Seaton. The Province’s plan
would leave the preserve and
develop Seaton for anywhere
between 45,000 to 60,000 resi-
dents.
Mr. Kozman agrees differ-
ences remain.
“The Province has a different
position than the City when it
comes to the agricultural pre-
serve,” he said. “When it comes
to the development of Cherry-
wood there is a difference there.
That difference aside, there is a
lot of commonality that bodes
well for a very strong relation-
ship between the Province and
the City.”

Pickering ready to ring up voters
Durham board
would have options
By Mike Ruta
Staff Writer
DURHAM – Public school
board ratepayers could have a
new trustee at the table early in
the new year, even though the
next municipal election isn’t
until 2006.
Paul Crawford, a Pickering
trustee on the Durham District
School Board since 1997, is
seeking a vacant spot on Pick-
ering council. Election day is
Nov. 8, and if Trustee Crawford
becomes Coun. Crawford, the
board would have to choose
between a byelection and an
appointment to replace him.
Board chairwoman Elizabeth
Roy in an interview said “it’s
not likely” a byelection would
be held, since all costs would
be borne by the Durham board,
even though the City of Picker-
ing would be in charge of the
process. A Pickering byelec-
tion costs around
$80,000.
An appointment
must occur within 60
days after a trustee
vacancy, but that
can take place in two
ways, she notes. The
board could simply
select one of the un-
successful Pickering
trustee candidates
from the last elec-
tion, in November 2003, as long
as the person remains quali-
fied. There were nine contend-
ers last November, including
trustees Crawford and Sherry
Croteau.
The second appointment
route is more complex. The
board would advertise the va-
cant position, receive applica-
tions from those interested in
the job and interview them.
The process would
be open to the public,
and trustees would
vote for their choice
of a new colleague.
Trustee Crawford
said he hasn’t de-
cided if he’s taking a
leave of absence from
his trustee job when
the campaign begins
in earnest after nomi-
nations close Sept.
24.
“I don’t think I’ll need to take
a leave because the amount of
time we put in it anyway is not
much anyway so that I can’t
campaign on my off nights,” he
said.
At the same time, he said if
he finds it poses a problem, he
would take a leave and refuse
his salary pay for the appropri-
ate period. He earns $5,000 per
year as a trustee. “I’m going
to see what happens after the
24th,” Trustee Crawford said.
As of yesterday morning,
eight candidates had regis-
tered.

breaks unique
100,000 mark
DURHAM – For the first time,
durhamregion.com has broken
the 100,000 unique hit mark.
A member of the Metroland
Durham Region Media Group,
the site had more than 111,000
unique users in August, accord-
ing to Todd Blayone, the busi-
ness development manager.
“Gains were made across the
board,” he says. “We’re pleased
with the performance of our
marketplace, personals, news
and entertainment channels.
Indeed, we’re thrilled that our
success generates success for
uses, community partners and
advertisers. Interactive media
usage is on the rise.”
Mr. Blayone notes breaking
the 100,000 barrier is a signifi-
cant achievement for a local
community resource.
Lamont Wilcott, the projects
lead, has been in charge of
charting growth at the website
for the past two years. And, he’s
predicting more gains in the
future.
“Several new initiatives will
make 2005 another record-set-
ting year. Our latest project, a
new local search engine, pro-
vides an innovative way to
search massive amounts of
local information,” Mr. Wilcott
notes.
Among the services durham-

Homework’s just
pure drudgery
I can’t believe the amount
of stuff my kids carry on
their backs as they head
off to school. You’d think they
were trekking into deepest
darkest jungles or something.
All that’s missing is a machete
and a compass.
Each morning, their mother
and I have to help them into
their backpacks, one of us
steadying the kids, the other
hefting the huge weight onto
their little shoulders. They can
barely walk under all that ton-
nage. I haven’t looked, but I
wouldn’t be surprised if the
route to school were strewn
with dozens of struggling kids,
turned turtle under the weight
of those damned packs.
In the winter it’s worse. The
boys stumble out the door
looking like Sherpas at a K2
Basecamp.
When did all this start? As
a kid, the most I can remem-
ber carrying to school was a
grudge, or maybe a macaroni
or toothpick sculpture. In the
wintertime, my hands were al-
most always full, of course, but
they were full of snowballs.
We didn’t need backpacks
crammed with binders and
textbooks and indoor shoes.
That’s something else that
makes me crazy: the indoor
shoes concept. Now parents,
who can barely keep their kids
in shoes at the best of times,
have to shell out twice the
coin for a pair of shoes the kid
will wear half as much. What’s
next? Indoor pants?
When I was in public
school, my desk was where
I kept all my stuff. It stayed
in there. Very occasionally, I
might have to bring home a
spelling book or something
from the library, but it was
invariably something I could
carry in one hand.
A big part of the problem is
that kids these days get a lot
more homework, something,
I think, is ridiculous and un-
necessary, too. Homework is
for kids who messed up during
class. If you’re dopey enough
to waste your class time talk-
ing and annoying other chil-
dren who are working, then
you get to finish up at home
while you listen to the kids
who completed their class-
work playing ball and riding
their bikes. Where’s the incen-
tive to work hard at school if
you know you’re just going to
get plastered with take-home
stuff anyway?
“OK kids, it’s three o’clock,
time to head home. Now be
sure to complete pages seven
through nine in your math
books and read chapters 13
and 15 in your geography texts
tonight.”
“Why?”
“Ummm...just because.”
I don’t get it. You’ll never
convince me that adding
on homework, simply be-
cause the government said
so, makes people smarter or
better learners. It just makes
them tired. And it may end up
creating a generation of adults
with back problems.
I think they end up with
homework because they’re
wasting precious class time
putting on and taking off their
indoor shoes.
Sunderland resident Neil
Crone, actor-comic-writer,
saves some of his best lines for
his columns.
T he Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is running a contest
to see who the greatest Canadian was or is. One name is sure
to surface again and again. That’s because, in the minds of
many Canadians, there is one person who stands above the rest.
He is, of course, Terry Fox.
Sunday is Terry’s day, when Canadians across the country will
run to raise money for cancer research in his name, as we have
done every year since September of 1981, just a few months after
the brave British Columbian died of cancer.
Te rry’s story is legend: The young man, who lost his leg to cancer,
decided to run across the country, in 1980, to show the dreaded
disease could be beaten. Terry dipped his toe in the Atlantic in
April, and started his long, lonely trek. By the time he arrived in On-
tario in June, the publicity Terry was generating was overwhelming.
Tragically, cancer struck Terry hard near Thunder Bay in August
and the marathon had to end. The whole country mourned when
this very brave young man lost his life the following June, but the
dream was far from over.
Canadians rallied by the thousands in Terry’s memory and the
Te rry Fox Run to beat cancer was born. Soon, the run became a
global event, with hundreds of thousands of people marking the
third Sunday in September each year to put on their runners, hop
on their bikes, or don their inline skates for the Terry Fox Run.
Corporations challenged one another to raise the most money
to try to beat cancer. Spirits soared with the recognition that Terry’s
courage had been taken up by young and old.
And it all started because one man wanted to show the world
cancer couldn’t stop him from running a marathon a day.
This Sunday, take a few hours to honour Terry’s memory. Head
to your nearest Terry Fox run site and walk or jog or bike or skate a
few kilometres on a late summer morning.
If you can raise money from sponsors, so much the better but
don’t pass on this event even if you don’t have sponsors. Kick in $5
or $10 or $20 yourself and get moving.
Yo u’ll enjoy the spirit of the other Fox runners around you and
you’ll be doing your part to keep Terry’s dream alive.
Cancer can and will be beaten, but, like Terry did all those years
ago, we have to believe and we each have to do something to make
it happen.
Public school system
serves students well
To the editor:
Re: ‘Investing in their chil-
dren’s future,’ three-part series
on private schools.
To present an alternate view
to the proponents of private
schools, I suggest that public
schools, while not good for
everybody, provide a critical
function to equalize opportu-
nity. Public education, how-
ever, is only as strong as the
community’s commitment to
it. When good students (and
their committed families) are
withdrawn, the public system
becomes weaker.
Each family that withdraws
makes it more desirable for
others to follow and we start
a spiral downward. To divert
funds to private schools, then,
means the public system can’t
do the job it is in place to do.
We have three children who
recently progressed through
the public system. I challenge
any private school to compete
with the friendships, music,
art and sport opportunities. It
comes down to the assessment
of what constitutes education.
Is it the amount of homework
or the diversity and breadth of
experience that matters?
Our philosophy for educa-
tion has been to provide for
a wide range of activities.
Instead of worrying about
a shortage of homework we
promoted extracurricular ac-
tivities. Educational books
and reading for pleasure; bed
time stories happened for
years.
All three children are now at
different universities follow-
ing their own diverse inter-
ests. We are paying out money
now that we may have saved
during the years when public
education was available.
I think we made the right
choice, just as other parents
believe that private education
is the better value. In Canada
we are free to make our own
independent choices. For this
I am truly grateful.

Non-smoking bylaw
just what was needed
To the editor:
As a 19-year-old student, I
hated walking into any bar or
restaurant to find myself in
a thick cloud of smoke. I am
very pleased to find that there
has only been one business to
be fined in all of Durham Re-
gion for breaking the current
non-smoking bylaw. While I
do work in a restaurant and
have experienced some back-
lash from smokers who are
upset with the bylaw, I find
that even they tend to under-
stand the need for it.
I feel more comfortable
venturing into bars and res-
taurants. I would like to con-
gratulate Durham Region for
its high rate of compliance.
Not only does it gain some re-
spect from where I come from
but it also let’s me put a little
faith back into local politics
for passing the bylaw.
Everyone should be keep-
ing their health in mind when
they think of any negativity
relating to the bylaw.

Muzzle large dogs only
To the editor:
Pit bulls, like all dogs, retain
many instincts of their wild
dog heritage; one of these is to
attack and bite.
Many dogs can be trained
as guard dogs and to be vi-
cious, including Staffordshire
Te rriers, Doberman Pin-
schers, Rottweilers and Ger-
man shepherds. They can also
be trained to be gentle and
well mannered.
Rather than ban any breed
of dog, it might be wise to
develop a bylaw that would
require that all larger and
powerful dogs wear a muzzle.
Attacks could then be reduced
to a minimum.
A muzzle, properly fitted,
is not uncomfortable to a dog
and the dog would quickly be-
come accustomed to wearing
it in public.

Fire Won’t Wait!
A fire in your home can turn
into a raging inferno faster than
you could ever imagine. If a fire
breaks out in your home, don't
waste time trying to save
possessions. Get everyone out
and away from the building as
quickly as possible and go to
your designated meeting place.
Then call the fire department
from a neighbour's phone.
Never re-enter a burning
building. Remember: your most
valuable possession is your life.

Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council and the Pickering Fire
Services. For more information contact the Pickering Fire
Services at Phone: 905.420.4628 or email:

Born in England, Charlotte Hamilton studied at St.
Martin’s School of Arts and Design in London. In
1991, Charlotte moved to Mallorca, Spain where she
furthered her studies at a more traditional Spanish Art
school.
In 2000, Charlotte’s heart led her to Toronto. She
started afresh and formed what is now known as
Blueshine Art. Today, Charlotte is a resident of the
Durham Region and continues to practice and
showcase her artwork.
This show was inspired by a recent trip to La Provence
in France showing intense light studies of village
scenes as well as the rich landscape of the countryside

AJAX – Ta ke a walk through the liv-
ing rooms of 30 homes all within a few
steps of each other at the Ajax Public
Library this month.
Karin Rubuka’s photographic look at
this part of people’s homes is on dis-
play in the main branch at the Rotary
Room until Wednesday, Sept. 29. The
photographs in ‘The Living Room’ se-
ries were taken by Rubuka after she put
out a call to people in the Kitchener
area to ‘volunteer’ their homes to ob-
serve and photograph what she sees.
“I trekked to each home, not know-
ing what I would see beyond each
door,” she says in a press release. “It
was important to me that I get only an
impression of who lived in the rooms.”
She explains she didn’t get to know
any of the people in the homes and
only retained ‘snippets’ of their lives
based on what they told her and what
they surrounded themselves with.
The show is open for viewing during
regular library hours, unless the Rotary
Room is in use.
The main branch, at 55 Harwood
Av e. S. is open Monday to Thursday
from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and
Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Panthers roll over listless Axemen
in junior ‘A’ hockey league opener
Poor pre-season
trans lates into lacklustre
debut for Ajax juniors
By Al Rivett
Sports Editor
DURHAM — A less-than-stellar pre-
season campaign came back to haunt
the Ajax Axemen in their junior hockey
home opener on Sunday afternoon.
A shockingly tight and punchless
Axemen squad was no match for the
fluid attack of the visiting Pickering
Panthers who met little resistance en
route to a 6-2 trouncing of the hosts in
the OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’
Hockey League 2004-05 regular-sea-
son debut for both clubs.
The Axemen entered their home
opener at the Ajax Community Cen-
tre, complete with a good crowd and
a light show to start the proceedings,
on a down note. The team lost its final
two pre-season contests, closing with
a lowly 2-5 record. The losing carried
over into Sunday’s game in which the
Axemen showed only glimpses of in-
terest.
By contrast, the Panthers roared
through their nine-game pre-season
schedule with a sparkling 6-3 mark
and, that too carried forth into Sun-
day’s opener. In fact, the Panthers pot-
ted their first regular-season goal a
mere 1:07 into the first period with
rookie centre Greg Riggs scoring his
first-ever Junior ‘A’ goal, finishing off
a passing play between linemates Phil
McIlhone and Cody Smith.
Most shocked by the listless play of
his charges was Axemen head coach
Larry LaBelle who, following the
game, wasn’t at a loss to explain his
team’s sub-par performance.
“It’s very simple –– they were the
better team in all aspects of the game.
No excuses, no nothing. They were
just the better team,” says LaBelle.
“Maybe the guys were just too tight. It
was a very poor performance. It’s one
thing to show a lack of systems play or
a lack of skill, but don’t show me lack
of effort.”
A lack of fortitude by the Ajacians
was evident through most of the first
period, as the Panthers leapt into a 2-
0 lead, peppering Ajax starting goalie
and former Panther Devon Ramasaw-
my with numerous shots. The Axemen
finally responded with 40 seconds to
go when another former Panther, Jus-
tin Teakle, scored from Jordan Hin-
richsen and Andrew McEvoy.
Forty seconds into the second peri-
od, Ajax tied the game at 2-2, on Brent
Clarke’s first of the season from line-
mate Jordan Weinberg and McEvoy. It
appeared the slumbering Axemen had
finally woken up. But, just more than
two minutes later, Pickering scored
three straight to take a 5-2 lead into
the third and quell any potential Axe-
men uprising.
Over on the other bench, Pan-
thers’ head coach John Winder was
pleasantly surprised by the play of
his squad, considering he was miss-
ing several key players due to inju-
ries and suspensions. Team captain
Ryan Annesley (thigh), Kyle Roulston
(groin), Justin Fox, Aaron Zimner and
Mark Cornacchia (suspensions) were
all out for Sunday’s opener, forcing
some last-minute juggling with Steve
Koufis, Chris Paul and Matt Miller, all
from the Ajax-Pickering Raiders ‘AAA’
midgets, called into action.
“We were definitely firing on all
cylinders,” says Winder, entering his
second season behind the Panthers’
bench.
Mostly, the Panthers relied on the
solid work of its corps of talented vet-
erans up front -- Andrew Dissanayake,
acting captain Derek Lynden, new-
comer Jeff Birr, who came over from
the Collingwood Blues in an off-sea-
son deal, and second-year forwards
Richard Schofield and Phil McIlhone.
Ly nden was a force in the contest,
scoring a pair of goals and adding
an assist for a tidy three-point per-
formance in the season opener. Dis-
sanayake, the team’s leading scorer of
a year ago, and McIlhone also contrib-
uted strong efforts with a goal and an
assist apiece. Birr added two assists.
But, the brightest light for the Pan-
thers was on the blue-line in the form
of newcomer John Soames. He not
only formed an effective defensive
tandem with veteran Michael Ban-
well, but also showed a capable offen-
sive side to his game. Soames scored
the game winner in the second pe-
riod, netting the first of what would be
three unanswered Panthers’ markers.
Soames also added two assists in the
victory.
Winder was effusive in his praise of
Soames for his solid two-way contri-
bution. Soames came over to the Pan-
thers in a deal during training camp
with the East Conference’s Lindsay
Muskies, with Panthers’ Robert Toom-
ey going the other way.
“He had moved down here from
Lindsay to work, so he was living in
Pickering,” says Winder. “He’s a fourth-
year player and his patience and expe-
rience on the blue line is huge for us.”
After the fourth Panther goal, Axe-
men starter Ramasawmy was lifted
in favour of Kyle Nova with just more
than five minutes gone in the second
period. Meanwhile, the Panthers rode
a solid performance from starter Ryan
Daniels to victory. Daniels wasn’t test-
ed too often in the contest, but was
called upon to make 28 saves on 30
shots.
The Axemen return to action on Fri-
day night when they travel to Toronto
to play the St. Michael’s Buzzers at the
St. Michael’s Arena at 7 p.m. On Satur-
day, the Axemen will face off against
the West Conference’s Brampton
Capitals during the league’s College
We ekend slate of games. Game time
is 9:15 a.m. at Mississauga’s Erin Mills
Twin Arena. On Sunday, the Ajacians
return home to face the Couchiching
Te rriers of the North Conference at
the Ajax Community Centre at 3 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Panthers also play
in the College Weekend, suiting up
against the Buffalo Lightning of the
We st Conference on Saturday at 12:15
p.m. at the Erin Mills Twin Arena.
The Pickering juniors play their home
opener against the Huntsville-Mus-
koka Otters at the Pickering Recre-
ation Complex Sunday at 6 p.m.
NOTES: The Axemen were a woeful
0-for-6 on the power play; the Panthers
were a respectable 2-for-4...While the
Panthers’ vets may have stepped to
the fore in Sunday’s win over Ajax,
Winder was equally impressed with
the work of several rookies, including
Chris Chappell and especially Riggs,
who was a sparkplug on offence. “I’m
getting more confident in Greg all the
time. I feel confident putting him out
in any situation.”

AJAX — Be afraid, be very
afraid of this hockey team.
The Fear Factor team ended
the inaugural season of the Ajax
3-on-3 summer hockey as cham-
pions.
Fear Factor defeated the
Blues in two straight games in an
exciting best-of-three final play-
off series. In Game 1, the teams
battled hard for victory but, in the
end, the Blues couldn’t match the
strength of Fear Factor, losing 11-
9.
In Game 2, Fear Factor came
out flying to take an early lead
and never looked back en route
to a 13-7 victory. Darren Smith
started the onslaught with the
first goal followed by Robbie Af-
fleck with another, Other Fear
Factor scorers were Andrew
Nicholls with a hat trick, Jordan
Minos, Scott Derosches and
Nakesh Jaggen each with two,
Jesse Thistel and James Hinkson
with one apiece.
Jake Rowlands led Fear Fac-
tor in goals this season. Fear Fac-
tor goaltender Michael Tini was
the league’s best goalie.
Over the course of the sum-
mer league’s 12-game season,
Fear Factor compiled a perfect

outscoring the opposition 144
goals for, while only allowing 58

Oshawa signs
Pickering resident
By Brian McNair
Staff Editor
OSHAWA — To o often, hockey
teams go into the pre-season with a
set notion of what the roster will look
like on opening day.
Justin Allen is pleased that wasn’t
the case with the Oshawa Generals.
Allen, a 19-year-old from Picker-
ing who had been toiling in the tier 2
ranks prior to this season, has worked
his way into the OHL through sheer
determination this summer.
It didn’t hurt, however, that Allen
played last season with the Newmar-
ket Hurricanes under Brad Selwood,
but Oshawa’s new general manager
says the opportunity to suit up for the
Generals was determined solely by
the player.
“He worked his way into the line-
up,” says Selwood, who signed Allen
on Thursday. “He worked very hard
this summer, got a personal trainer
and did a lot of off-ice training... I told
him we were going to give him an op-
portunity to come in here and do this
and he came in and did it. He earned
his spot.”
Although never drafted by an OHL
team, Allen looked every bit the part of
an OHL player Sunday, scoring once
and playing a solid all-round game
in the Generals’
6-4 win over the
Erie Otters. The
win, which came
before a crowd
of about 1,000
at the Garnet B.
Rickard Recre-
ation Complex
in Bowmanville,
upped the Gen-
erals’ pre-sea-
son record to
2-0-1.
“He’s a physical player, but he
also showed some good smarts kill-
ing penalties and scored a nice goal,”
Generals’ coach Bob McGill says in
reference to Allen’s effort Sunday.
“He’s contributing in a lot of ways
and that’s what we need. We need
guys that are going to be more than
just one-dimensional.”
A 6-foot-1, 210-pound right-winger,
Allen admires the way Gary Roberts
plays the game, and would like to
contribute in a similar way for the
Generals. Last season with the Hurri-
canes, he had 13-11-24 numbers and
59 penalty minutes in 43 games.
“Coming into camp, I figured go out
and give it 110 per cent and if I don’t
make the team, I gave it my all,” Allen
says. “I’m pretty happy with how I’ve
kept up with the pace. Everyone’s big-
ger and faster and can shoot the puck.
Everyone can play.”
Allen moved to Pickering in Grade
7 and went to high school at St. Mary
and Dunbarton. He played his minor
hockey in Toronto and started his
junior career with the Thornhill Rat-
tlers before Selwood brought him to
Newmarket.
“I just think the world of him,” says
Selwood. “He can kill penalties, he
can play the power play, He’s a physi-

Hurling heat
PICKERING — Ontario Power Generation pitcher Jordan
Cahill prepares to fire some heat to the plate during Pickering
Softball Association’s Champions Day at Dunmoore Park last
Saturday. Jordan and his mates faced OJ Muller Landscaping in
the title game in the peewee boys’ division.
Despite roller coaster
season, Spartans win
OBA championship
AJAX — The Ajax Spartans
major mosquito rep baseball team
may have surprised other teams at
the Ontario Baseball Association
championships, but, mainly, the
Ajacians surprised themselves.
After an up-and-down 2004 dia-
mond campaign entering the OBA
playdowns, expectations were low
for the Spartans at the OBA tour-
nament held over the Labour Day
long weekend. But, the team’s true
character would be tested and it
would pass with flying colours.
Playing Markham in the final,
Ajax received a pitching gem from
starter Steven Sattz who pitched six
sizzling innings in the final. Cody
Ferrier closed out the final inning
to give Ajax a 6-3 victory and their
second consecutive Ontario title.
Manager Andy Knautz praised
his players for their perseverance
throughout the season that culmi-
nated in the provincial crown.
“This weekend illustrated the
true character of this team. We
bounced back from adversity the
entire season and saved our finest
play for when it mattered the most,”
said Knautz.
After defeating East York in the
opening game, the Spartans faced
the Mississauga Twins in Game
2. Stellar pitching by Logan Aber-
nathy, Cody Ferrier and Spencer
McLeod limited the Twins to two
runs over seven innings. After solid
hits by Jeff Martin, Steven Deeg and
Drew Knautz, Martin would score
the winning run in the sixth inning
to give the Ajacians a 3-2 victory.
In Game 3, Barrie and Ajax went
into extra innings with the score
tied 4-4. Both teams stranded base
runners in the eighth inning. Eric
Rizzo led off the ninth inning for
Ajax with a base hit up the middle.
Hits by Brandon Tieche and Aber-
nathy led to the winning run in a
5-4 Ajax victory.
Ajax defeated Brampton 7-5 to
earn a berth in the title game. Na-
than Barr went 2-for-3 scoring two
runs. Stellar hitting and defence by
Colin MacFarlane helped seal the
win.
Although not being able to play
due to injury, Waseem Patel proved
to be the loudest team supporter
throughout the Ontario champion-
ships.

Sounds of Strauss
and Ravel to be
played Saturday
DURHAM – The familiar
and exotic mix at the open-
ing concert of the season of
the Oshawa-Durham Sym-
phony Orchestra.
The Sept. 18 concert is
the first in the orchestra’s
48th season and will fea-
ture works by Strauss and
Ravel, under the baton of
conductor and music direc-
tor Marco Parisotto.
But it’s not Johann Strauss
Jr., of ‘Blue Danube’ fame.
Rather it’s Richard Strauss
and his ‘Zarathustra,’ rec-
ognizable from Stanley
Kubrick’s movie, ‘2001: A
Space Odyssey.’
“The program will be a
mixture of the familiar with
the exotic,” said ODSO
board chairman Sherry
Bassin. “You’ll never appre-
ciate this music more than
when you hear it live with
this orchestra.”
Also on the program is
Ravel’s ‘Daphnis and Chloe’
with guest flautist Michael
Mar tin Kofler, an interna-
tional soloist and principal
flute with the Munich Phil-
harmonic.
Ravel and Strauss are
considered two of the most
successful orchestral scien-
tists in music history and
these two works are con-
sidered their most brilliant
scores.
‘Zarathustra’ is a musical
manifestation of Nietzsche’s
superman philosophy.
The 7:30 p.m. concert will
be held at Calvary Baptist
Church, Ritson and Ross-
land roads, Oshawa.
Individual tickets and
season subscriptions are
available by calling 905-
576-7365. Tickets prices
are: adults, $28, children
and students, $12, family
passes (2 adults and 4 chil-
dren under 18) for $75.
